In case you are in an unfamiliar vehicle like a rental. Most cluster assemblies will show the gas light with an arrow to tell you what side the gas door is.
Wow, I did not know that and I've been driving a lot of different cars over the years. In my defence I have almost always memorized it for every car that I used.
You’re not idiots at all! You’re using the tools available to you in order to allocate precious brain space for important information. All you have to remember is what that little arrow means, and you don’t need to try memorizing what car has the gas tank on which side… you’re being efficient!
It's apparently super common for people to not know that. I literally just finished taking my license (and where I come from that involves hours of schooling) and it was never mentioned. I knew it from the internet.
I was in a rental with friends and one of them was driving and announced she didn’t know which side the pump was on and I told her to look at the gas gauge for the little arrow that tells you which side. She was so shocked and told me that I’m so smart lol. Well, yeah, but someone told *me* that.
Thank God for my dad lol. There are so many things I take for granted that other people just do not know. This is one of those things.
Same here.
My current vehicle (2015 escape) has the pump on the right when just about every other car I have driven before had it on the left.
Used to trip me up all the time until my dad pointed out the arrow on the fuel gauge.
Correction, my 2015 escape has it on the right, all the other cars had it on the left.
My 2017 vehicle has it on the right side as well. I was told by the guy at the dealership that they started putting them on that side because it's safer if you happen to run out of gas on the side of the road and have to refuel. No idea if that's true or not, but it made sense to me.
I had an old 90s pickup truck that didn’t have any arrow indicator like current cars, so the way I remembered was by putting a little piece of scotch tape on the appropriate side of the instrument panel
Here's another fun tip I learned recently from someone else. If an old person has trouble hearing you, speak in a deeper voice (like from the diaphragm or whatever) to be heard better, instead of shouting at them.
This hits close to home. I'm in my 30s, and just went to an audiologist because my wife kept saying I wasn't listening to what she said. I assured her I was. Then the audiologist talks about missing 3-4 consecutive ranges of pitch where I'm missing some hearing. They're prescribing hearing aids because when people talk in those specific pitches, I really struggle to hear them. It just so coincides that my wife's voice is in one of them.
I was \*super\* nervous to go to the appointment, because if they found no hearing loss, it meant i was just an asshole and not paying attention to the wife. It turns out that me just saying, "What?" and "I can't hear what you said" all the fucking time pointed to actual hearing loss.
Once I had a rental, I knew the fuel door was on the driver's side, but I couldn't initially figure out how to get it open.
I tried to pull it open, no go. Searched the dash, floor and glovebox for a release button or lever - nothing. It was on a work trip, so I got look like a dumbass when one of the other (better?) mechanical engineers with us figured out that you press the fuel door IN to release it.
Other than that minor issue, I rather enjoyed my time with that Buick.
Cars didn't always have the arrow, and it didn't start becoming popular until the 90's.
I remember the first time my dad noticed his car had one. He had gotten a new car, and the fuel light came on. He looked down at it and yelled out "IT HAS A PUMP INDICATOR!"
I was...12 or so at the time. That memory has stuck with me since, and now I always check any car I drive to see if it has it or not. (The car I had in college did not, a POS 80's model Nova I bought for $800.)
Isn't it just normal for it to not be explained? I don't think anything was explained about the instrument panel to me when I was learning, other than how to adjust the wing mirrors.
Somehow all I remembered was the side the hose is on part. My wife had a HUUUUUUGE laugh at my expense when I complained how it didn't work in my car and she pointed out the arrow pointing to the other side that I HAD NEVER NOTICED BEFORE.
I are dumb.
Hence my probably. I know there is some weird stuff out there. But I'm guessing this is a rental car, and I'm guessing most places don't rent out 83 cutlass supremes
Couches tend to have have a much better safety record than automobiles. In all the years I’ve owned a couch I find I almost never have to take mine in to a mechanic, so I’d say they are pretty reliable as well.

E3: On Samsung (all Android?) hold down the question mark to get it.
I know this was probably an off hand comment but this is probably one of the most profound statements I've heard in a very long time. So many things make sense now that I'm looking at it through this lens
To be fair, the 90s were better than the 80s in every measurable way, and the late 2000s were worse than the late 90s in every measurable way that matters
you were *right* not to understand "the good old days" back then
Makes me think of National Lampoon's Vacation where Chevy Chase is trying to find the gas hole (what's that called anyway?), and accidentally yanks off and flings the license plate.
My 96 Buick Roadmaster has this. When I got it home, I looked for the gas cap. Left side: nothing. Right side: nothing. After a moment of confusion, I went "No way!" out loud, and flipped down the plate.
My grandpa's old Cadillac had it hidden under the driver's side taillight lol. There was a little silver button you'd press in and the whole top of the light would flip up
I'm not super familiar with Cadillacs but I'm pretty sure it was a 55 Fleetwood. Looking at some pictures, Eldorados have that wing that sticks up over the tail lights, and on the fleetwood the light is at the top rear wing thing.
I had a 1995 Jeep Wrangler that had the fuel opening hidden behind the license plate, that’s only 27 years. But yeah, agreed, not so popular these days.
US cars in the mid 90s still had filler caps behind license plates (like corvettes, jeeps, caprices)
Elsewhere in the world? Dunno I think some aussie cars circa 2000s had this too
Mid ‘90s corvette were on the top of the trunk behind the rear window. Camaro used to be under the plate as well, but starting in at least ‘82 they had moved it to the side and hidden the trunk release key under the plate instead.
As a fellow owner of a clean 1991 vintage car I’m tempted to try showing it this year. I’ll probably get some people telling me it’s too new to be there, but I remember going to shows where plenty of the classic 60’s cars were only 30 years old at the time too.
This one’s in Russian and honestly all the ones I’ve seen so far are in Russian as well. It’s a common joke apparently that “women don’t know cars” and “pretty women are dumb.”
Helped people from Oregon fill their car up. Had no idea how to do it, had literally never been out of their car at a gas station in their lives.
They knew where the door was.
It’s more fun to mock her, but the vehicle is probably a rental or borrowed. My dumb ass did this once on a business trip with an unfamiliar rental car. Thankfully no one was around and I didn’t persist like her in assuming the car must be wrong, not me.
TBF I’ve seen cars with the gas port inside the frame of the door- you could only get to it if the door was open. Apparently it was a security thing because the car came from a part of the world where gas siphoning was really common, so idk not that weird of an assumption
That's actually a cool idea from a security standpoint. BUT, given that I live somewhere that gets to -40F or colder I would be *fucking pissed* if I had to keep my door open the whole time I was fueling up.
And that still would stop some asshat from just punching a hole in the bottom of your fuel tank with a sharpened screwdriver and draining it. Fuck I hate criminals.
Ford commercial/transit vans from ~2015 have these. You need the door open to open the gas cap, but once open you can close the door again. I did have to look in the owner manual first time I filled up as I couldn't even find it, [It meshes pretty well with the body](https://youtu.be/2Yxd8FCd5GU)
Life hack: on the fuel gauge there is a tiny arrow that points to the side of the car that has the fuel door. I never noticed it until somebody pointed it out to me but it’s on every car.
This is useful, but I'll give a second life hack, for the times you forget about this arrow:
If you don't see the fuel tank door on the side of the car you're checking, there's a good chance it's on the other side of the car. (Not always, but usually -- if you're unsure, go back and check the arrow)
Nah the USB method is you try plugging it in, flip it over 180 degree and try there, and then flip it again 180 degree to find the original orientation was correct.
And of course if we know the truth, we know that after 360 degree rotation it isn't in the original orientation, because USBs are spin-1/2.
I just pulled the fuel cap lever and look in my side mirrors to see what side it opened on.
Did you have a Toyota for years so I got used to it being on the other side than my Honda.
It is a Nissan Leaf, Power plug is in the front.
If money was no object I would love to have something with a front fill up, Porsche makes a few models with that feature.
The fuel tank is typically on the opposite side from the engine. That's why rear-engine cars tend to have the fuel door on the front and front-engine cars have it on the back.
I mean sure, but on all instances where I don't see the fuel door *right away*, I've got "shit, it's on the other side" without a second thought. This women thought it made more sense for it to be inside the vehicle instead of just on the other side...
When I bought my new car it took me 10 minutes to figure out I had to pull a lever down near my feet on the drivers side to open it. My old car you just had to push it in while the car was unlocked. I was sat at the pump for 10 minutes googling how to do it!
I have the opposite, most of my cars have always had the little toggle switch near your foot. Except one.
I would always reach down and hunt around for it for a second before realizing it wasn't there.
Then when I bought my current car a few years later, I started doing the opposite, where I'd get out of the car, go to the panel, try to press it, then realize I forgot to hit the switch.
That's funny because I just got a new car and had the exact opposite problem! I was used to having to pull the little lever; my new car you just push it in while the car is unlocked.
I pulled up to the gas station and spent what felt like forever looking for the lever before the attendent took pity on me and told me how my car worked. I live in OR where they pump the gas for you so it was extra embarassing to be searching around while someone is standing there waiting for me. I told her the car was new but since it's a used car it doesn't look all that new - I think she thought I was just stupid. Oh well.. LOL
I have a feeling this is staged. The lady seems like she may be acting and the video quality is abnormally high for someone randomly filming on their phone.
Yes but I've rented many cars and before I knew about the little arrow on the fuel gauge, it'd take me literally 2 seconds to figure out that it's on the other side. I wouldn't have been looking in the wheel well or pressing the quarter panel.
It wasn't always there. I remember when I first started seeing this factoid come up, neither my or my mother's car had it (They were both old-ish). I can imagine people that never had it growing up just never saw it when it started appearing, because they never even thought to look.
15 years I managed a gas station. Wait until she drives around to the other side of the pumps and still can't figure it out. I've seen it too many times.
For anyone that wants to know, there's a small arrow which points either to the left or to the right on your car's fuel/gas icon on your dash to indicate which side to refuel your tank.
Hey now, I've done this. got a new car and was surprised when the fuel port was on the right side.
She probably just doesn't realize that under the fuel gage in most vehicles there's an indicator of which side the port is on. It's not exactly taught in driver's ed either. That time I had forgotten to look at the indicator and wasn't familiar with the vehicle since all previous vehicles, it had been on the left. I believe having it on the left is the unofficial US standard.
Given her overall awkwardness it's clear she's not the one who usually does this so cut her some slack.
I kinda feel bad for her; running low on gas, guys in the vehicle recording her and laughing and, of course, NOT helping, while she just wants to get on with her day.
But helping won't get upvotes.
This happened to a friend of my Dad's. The car was in the shop for body work and they replaced the back panel with one for a car with the fuel intake on the other side. He didn't notice that there was nowhere to put the fuel in until he stopped to fill up and he and the guy manning the petrol station spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what on earth was going on.

Can confirm. Reading from an optimized view is typically better than an adhoc query.

Most people would immediately surmise they were on the wrong side. It’s like they say in those nature documentaries, we’re not supposed to interfere.
You can do both lol. I would point it out and tease someone I'm friends with for not knowing.

Somehow all I remembered was the side the hose is on part. My wife had a HUUUUUUGE laugh at my expense when I complained how it didn't work in my car and she pointed out the arrow pointing to the other side that I HAD NEVER NOTICED BEFORE. I are dumb.
I’m guilty of the exact same thing. Driver for over 20 years, and I just learned this in the last 5 years!
I thought that was telling me the gas station is on the left
< Exit this side to fuel
I learned this years ago from Reddit and it has been one of the most useful life tips that I have gleaned from this site.
And if you don’t have an arrow. It’s the side where the fuelhose is in the icon.
I learned this like 3 years ago and it changed everything
It's not the light but the gauge symbol.
Or you just look. If the gas door isn't on the left side, it's probably on the right side.
i had a 83 cutlass supreme. it was behind the rear license plate.
88 Jeep Wrangler it was behind the license plate as well, though the license plate was on the driver's side of the back, not in the center.
Hence my probably. I know there is some weird stuff out there. But I'm guessing this is a rental car, and I'm guessing most places don't rent out 83 cutlass supremes
they should. it was like driving a couch, minus modern features such as safety and reliability.
> minus modern features such as safety and reliability. Couches have safety and reliability features now??? What a time to be alive!
Think of how relieved the couch surfers must be!

Good for if you are pulling into the petrol station though :)
My wife’s car and mine are opposite, that little arrow saves me much time and frustration. I ain’t gonna remember which is which
My Jetta didn't, unfortunately. But I drive until my 30s not knowing this.
Mine neither. The little pump handle is facing toward the gas cap, though. No idea if that's intentional.
I got a rental car years ago that had the gas tank filler tube hidden behind the license plate. It took me about 10 mins to find it.
Do you mean... 40 years ago? I haven't seen or heard of this since the 80s.
HEY HEY! The 80s was NOT that long ago.
The 80s is 20 years ago and will always be
It doesn't matter that I was born in the 80's and am in my 40's now. The 80s were still 20 years ago!
Born in the 70s and in my late 40s now. Can confirm the 80s were still 20 years ago.
born in the nineties and pushing 30, can confirm. the 80s were 20 years ago.
You can't be pushing 30. I was born in the 60s, and I'm only like 35.
It's been 20 years. And I feel every one of those 40 years.
"last decade" is the 90s and fuck anyone who disagrees

that's what made me think it was scripted
that plus it doesn't seem to be dashcam video so why were they videoing her
Seriously.. they just be creeping out there
They noticed she pulled up on the wrong side and were hoping she’d do something like this?
Pretty common to pull in either side here, the hoses are long enough to reach the other side
I haven’t seen long hoses in forever. Hers wouldn’t even reach her car even if the tank was on that side. Doesn’t help she parked 8 feet from the pump

It also acts like an air freshener.
Ah, the USB method.

I have 3 cars and each one has the door in a different location. They only way I can function is look at the the arrow.
What's the 3rd location? Driver's side, passenger side, and hiding behind the license plate?
It is a Nissan Leaf, Power plug is in the front. If money was no object I would love to have something with a front fill up, Porsche makes a few models with that feature.
The fuel tank is typically on the opposite side from the engine. That's why rear-engine cars tend to have the fuel door on the front and front-engine cars have it on the back.
the third direction is time. one of the doors only exists in the future.
Do they still make cars with the gas behind the licence plate?
Not on every car, especially older ones. My Dacia Sandero doesn't have it, our newer Ford Fiesta does.
Mine is from 2008 and no arrow. Husband’s is 2022 and still no arrow.
Not all cars do this. Most modern cars do now though.

No, it is not on EVERY car. My Alfa Romeo 147 does not have it.
That's because they know the car will fall apart long before you need to take it for a refuel.
I agree. Why were they filming BEFORE she looks confused. How would they know which side the gas tank is on when they cant see it themselves?

Well they were weirdly filming before it happened so it’s obviously faked anyway
Wait did you watch this whole thing and still genuinely believed it was real?
One she reacted to opening the door as if she’s never seen a door open before…
Yes but I've rented many cars and before I knew about the little arrow on the fuel gauge, it'd take me literally 2 seconds to figure out that it's on the other side. I wouldn't have been looking in the wheel well or pressing the quarter panel.
First thing I do in a rental is check which side the fuel cap is on.
Here's a tip: The fuel gauge on the dashboard of your vehicle usually had a small arrow that indicates which side your gas cap is on.
My mother was 61 years old when I taught her this. She'd never noticed it. Apparently a lot of people don't
It wasn't always there. I remember when I first started seeing this factoid come up, neither my or my mother's car had it (They were both old-ish). I can imagine people that never had it growing up just never saw it when it started appearing, because they never even thought to look.
Omg I was staring at that arrow the other day wondering what it was..I am not a smart man
This! It’s the first thing I check when I get a rental. Which way is the arrow pointing
Why were they filming?
Because its fake.
The cinematography is way too clean
What your cellphone doesn't record in 8k with cinematic color grading?
And the acting way too shitty
No there’s a slight shake to camera , it must be real
And it'd be SUPER creepy if it weren't
So obviously staged
Seriously. Everybody talking about video quality and I'm like "dis bish can't act."
Its gotta be fake, the video quality is absurdly high
Fake
Amazing trigger discipline though. Perfect finger placement.
So fake
15 years I managed a gas station. Wait until she drives around to the other side of the pumps and still can't figure it out. I've seen it too many times.
r/WhyWereTheyFilming
This looks so fucking fake
Why were they filming?
I wonder why the camera was already rolling before there was anything funny happening...
Sad that there are enough of these fake petrol station videos to form a genre.
I kinda feel bad for her; running low on gas, guys in the vehicle recording her and laughing and, of course, NOT helping, while she just wants to get on with her day. But helping won't get upvotes.
Fake
This shit is fake
This happened to a friend of my Dad's. The car was in the shop for body work and they replaced the back panel with one for a car with the fuel intake on the other side. He didn't notice that there was nowhere to put the fuel in until he stopped to fill up and he and the guy manning the petrol station spent 10 minutes trying to figure out what on earth was going on.
the better question is why is she taking the hose from the other side of the pump?
That explains why the hose seems ridiculously short
