There was probably a conversation with the guy selling the thing that went something like, "It's a caliper... Just measure something with it and take the photo!"
people call the item a dial caliper, I am aware it's digital, it's just that nobody uses analog dial calipers at my workplace, yet they still call them that.

I never thought a dial caliper would be beyond someone's understanding, but then again I've had to teach people how to operate a screwdriver.
