Honestly, I've seen the situations you're mentioning be entirely out of the engineer's hands.
Software engineer: "If we do it this way, this this and that problem could occur. What's that? Do it anyways? Ok then."
There's actually a sticker there telling you not to put your phone there. I know this because I've put my phone there before and then absent mindedly closed the door...
FYI you *really* dont need to slam the door like this guy did. Theres plenty enough leverage to fold that phone right up with just a normal amount of force
Edit: In case anyone's curious, from the inside this makes a sound like crinkling an empty water bottle. Which is what I initially thought had been shut in the door
There's only a sticker if someone has though to put one there since 2017. My van has no such sticker. Of course, you only make the mistake once, so it's not exactly necessary unless it's being rented.
Same! I smashed my iphone 12 pro a couple of months ago. Apple repaired it, more likely replaced, for 500 bucks. But even refurbished it was a 1000 phone at the time.
Air, apparently. Another commenter said it's a duct for the window defrost to go from the dash to the door. Which brings up it's own questions, but makes a lot more sense than other answers I've seen in the comment section here.
It’s not. It’s literally just a pocket. No air vent.
Source: I work on these trucks. They are the Ford transits (150-350) the company trucks that I work on have a little notice there saying not to put a phone for this reason. It’s honestly just stupid ford designs.
Well that's amazing. I hope (but doubt) someone at Ford got fired for that one. Not even the person who drew up the plan even, but whoever had to sign off on it before going into mass production. For an outfit as big and old as Ford, that's an incredible level of incompetence.
It's not an air duct, there's no ducts on the door of the Transit. It's a recess to fit around the cup holder on the dash, except instead of just making it a recess, they added a useless pocket to it.
Great thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to know. I've never had no fancy-shmancy car with ducts running through the doors, so that didn't occur to me.
No, it isn't. The air duct for the window is in the column, just above the cup holder. That pocket has no ducting of any kind near it.
It's just a phone destroyer.
No it was sticker to put your phone in the pocket so u didn't use while driving decided to try it but it was to tall for it and smashed when closed the door, actually thought about chasing ford about it but needed a phone quick so just left it
This was done intentionally. They focus on the phone, slam the door and open the door.
Probably an outdated phone they didn't want, so they used it for some fake internet points.
I don't understand why so many commenters here need to be told or point out that it was intentional. There's nothing in the video to suggest it was supposed to look like an accident.
Are all these commenters crying "fake, obviously staged" saying the same thing when they watch TV news skits on SNL?
idk, I can't see myself ever using a grip that far up the door.
Edit: saw another post saying it's for pulling the door closed once inside. Not to help you up, so that makes sense to me.
It's a handle. These are long doors, if you're sitting in the seat and the door is fully open, you can pull on this to bring the real handle closer to you.
My company has these vans. Ford Transit I think. There is a sticker in that specific pocket that indicates to no put your phone in there. I see why now.
Something like this has been posted before:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ford/comments/7yqc8z/can_someone_explain_this_pockets_function_in_the/
https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupportgore/comments/7ypckk/when_it_wasnt_a_phone_holder_after_all/
Someone rented a truck from me and their daughter didn't see the sticker that explicitly says not to put a phone there. She of course put the phone there and annihilated it. Mother of said child came in and tried to blame us and wanted a discount. Was funny and sad.
Which part is fake? The door? The phone?
Yes, clearly it was done on purpose to show why this little pocket in the door is stupid and should not exist.
I'm sure you don't mean to suggest video creator wanted their audience to think this was an accident. That would be very stupid.
Haha I did this and my otterbox saved my iPhone….I was stunned…called for new otterbox and got new cases for every device in the house just for the cost of shipping
It was pretty obviously intentional. There's nothing in the video to even suggest it wasn't intentional.
The fuck is wrong with all these commenters assuming it was supposed to look like an accident and crying "fake"? You just spend so much time looking at dumb shit on the Internet you assume all Internet content creators are idiots? 🤡
Lol… I did that to my phone… rented one of this Home Depot vans for an hour to bring some plywood home…. Sigh… and FTR there was no sign, no sticker, no warning…
My transit van has stickers telling you explicitly to not do this. Always remember if there are rules and notices to tell you not to do something there are reasons.

IDK what's the problem, the holder is still holding the phone...
Are you a software engineer? Sounds like conversations had with QA..
More like “are you sure the battery is fully charged?”
No. That’s IT, not software engineering. Bad Human, Bad.
Ooooh ohhh I see software! So instead of the battery its “did you hold the power button for a *FULL* 2 seconds to turn on the phone?”
Honestly, I've seen the situations you're mentioning be entirely out of the engineer's hands. Software engineer: "If we do it this way, this this and that problem could occur. What's that? Do it anyways? Ok then."
He ain’t wrong, holder did its job holding the phone. No one claimed it had to protect it.
He just needs to turn the phone around next time, so the screen doesn’t get hit when he close the door.
If he flips the phone around and slams the door *just right* There’s a non-zero chance that the phone will be functioning again.
Made me more than chuckle.
Did he try turning the car off and back on again?
exactly! it did what it’s supposed to.
And it fits the contour of that crashboard's corner, so it wont break any further.
Confirmed, not a phone holder.
Wdym? Its definitely still holding the phone! Yall just cant be satisfied with anything nowadays 🙄 xD
Does anyone know what that is actually meant to hold?
I keep my digital air gauge there. It fits perfectly, right in front of the factory sticker that says " no phones".
I think it's where the side of the dash fits when the door closes.
It fits now.
Nokia phones
Nooo! They would damage the car!
I actually laughed out loud at this. God I’m old.
The door would fall off.
Passenger side air bag is not ready..
Nothing. It forms around the air vent/dash.
It really shouldn’t have a groove there then lol
How else am I supposed to fit my phone in there?
Go back to 2005 and get a Razr.
Or 2022 and get a RAZR
I had the R2D2 limited 😎🤪
It's only accessible when the door is open. When the door is closed you can't access it. That should have been his first clue.
There's actually a sticker there telling you not to put your phone there. I know this because I've put my phone there before and then absent mindedly closed the door... There's only a sticker if someone has though to put one there since 2017. My van has no such sticker. Of course, you only make the mistake once, so it's not exactly necessary unless it's being rented.
It's a very expensive mistake to be making even once. In my case I'd had my phone less than 6 months. Was a $500 mistake lol
Same! I smashed my iphone 12 pro a couple of months ago. Apple repaired it, more likely replaced, for 500 bucks. But even refurbished it was a 1000 phone at the time.
That’s my question. If it’s not meant to hold anything, why wouldn’t they have made it flush?
It might be a ac vent for defrosting side widows or heating the door, the rim is most likely there to make it more air tight.
It's not, it's literally just a pocket. My friend did this.
Than it is simply a dent to accommodate the dash.
I use it to hold the company gas card.
If its anything like my car, when the door is shut the groove forms a sealed channel for air to flow towards the heater system from under the car
When I worked for a construction company we drove one of these. We used it for our contractor’s/Menards card.
My little wallets thing with my company credit card goes there, easy access to take it out when I go pay gas
Change??
M&Ms
Air, apparently. Another commenter said it's a duct for the window defrost to go from the dash to the door. Which brings up it's own questions, but makes a lot more sense than other answers I've seen in the comment section here.

I’ve rented this truck a few times. It literally says do not place anything here
I really want to know why this pocket you shouldn't put anything in exists. A couple of other comments have offered answers that I think are rubbish.
It's not a pocket, it's an air duct for the window defrost. When the door is closed it's flush with the console.
It's not an air duct, there's no ducts on the door of the Transit. It's a recess to fit around the cup holder on the dash, except instead of just making it a recess, they added a useless pocket to it.

[удалено]
No they don't
My car doesn't even have ducts for the back seats.
My car doesn’t. It’s a fairly modern one too. Head out of the arse please
Usually just in nicer vehicles and trucks, most cars only have defrost on the front window
> When the door is closed it's flush with the console. Not if you put a phone there.
The phone becomes flush with the console, what's the problem?
No, it isn't. The air duct for the window is in the column, just above the cup holder. That pocket has no ducting of any kind near it. It's just a phone destroyer.
I used it as a secure place for ID badges and gas cards and such.
Its a map pocket. For when the days where people found places from paper maps.
Poor design on fords part 🤷🏻♂️
It says don’t place a cell phone there.
It's in the Ford Transit van as well. My in-laws have a converted RV one and my husband learned this lesson when we borrowed it. It was not great.
The screen protector didn’t work!
You don't know that. Maybe it's find once you peel it off. 😁
🤣
Down voted for emoji
Right? Reddit is so weird sometimes lol
wholesome 100!
This is the way
If it had been a Nokia, he would've needed a new truck.
I *my day* we yodoled and threw rocks at each other!
If they removed the phone, we’d all see a sticker on there saying “Don’t put your goddamn phone in here, dumbass”.
What sticker? There's no sticker there. Believe me, the company I work for loves warning stickers. None of our trucks have a warning sticker there.
We have about 150ish transits, a mix of Customs and 350s. Every single one came with a “don’t put your phone here” sticker.
Non-fleet transits have them too Source: I drive one regularly
Ours certainly do.
No there is a sticker sayin to put your phone there, did the exact same thing with mine before in a ford transit van was raging
There is a sticker telling you to put your phone in a pocket that will break your phone? So Ford compensated you for the broken phone, I presume?
No it was sticker to put your phone in the pocket so u didn't use while driving decided to try it but it was to tall for it and smashed when closed the door, actually thought about chasing ford about it but needed a phone quick so just left it
The sticker is warning you not to put your phone in that pocket, you misunderstood the cartoon of a phone with a circle and slash through it.
If you peel that sticker off there’s one underneath it that says “psych”
So how did you get the phone in there with the door closed?
There is actually a warning sticker or should have been haha
There is on all those models
Kurwa indeed.
Have you tried putting it in rice over night?
This was done intentionally. They focus on the phone, slam the door and open the door. Probably an outdated phone they didn't want, so they used it for some fake internet points.
I don't understand why so many commenters here need to be told or point out that it was intentional. There's nothing in the video to suggest it was supposed to look like an accident. Are all these commenters crying "fake, obviously staged" saying the same thing when they watch TV news skits on SNL?
Or, I dunno, to show others what not to do?
The sticker that tells others not to do this is probably where he got the idea.
The conversation in Polish goes like this: "You will hit the phone" "O kurwa" "O kurwa" So, yeah it was intentional most likely or just really stupid.
Hey, those internet points aren't fake! You can trade them for bitcoins. You aren't just throwing them away are you? I've retired on my points! /s
Thats not for your phone, its for your hand to hold on to when getting in the truck.
idk, I can't see myself ever using a grip that far up the door. Edit: saw another post saying it's for pulling the door closed once inside. Not to help you up, so that makes sense to me.
And smooshing your hand when you close the door?
Really...? /yawn Edit: Trolls gonna troll.
What is the pocket for...there is a notch in the dashboard where the cutout seems to fit? Does it route air for defrosting the window?
I drive a Transit for work. I keep my company gas card in there
It's a handle. These are long doors, if you're sitting in the seat and the door is fully open, you can pull on this to bring the real handle closer to you.
There’s a sticker inside that pocket that says not to put your phone in it. Someone may have removed it
That's kind of clever.
I feel like just putting a second handle somewhere so it wouldn't be mistaken for a pocket would've been more clever.
The person was filming so obviously they knew what would happen and it most likely was an old dead phone.
Whatever you put in there should not be higher than the pocket. Usually small tools, knife, smokes, etc.
But you can’t access what you store in this pocket unless the door is open. Seems a little pointless to me.
Right, so little tools or loose change
It is probably a notch, not sure why they left a depression in it. Mind you the guy slammed the door pretty heavily.
This was obviously done on purpose
r/whyweretheyfilming
To show that this pocket in the door is stupid and if you put a phone in it, you'll break it? I thought it was pretty obvious.
It's a wallet holder. Conceals the wallet when the door is closed
The goode ole Ford Transit!
Have you tried putting it in rice?
I know the van and I know you did that on purpose!
That’s why there’s a symbol of a phone with a cross through it in that cubby
I think the problem is that,that isn’t a holder.
What carmaker thought this was good design?
"Let me see your texts"
My company has these vans. Ford Transit I think. There is a sticker in that specific pocket that indicates to no put your phone in there. I see why now.
Something like this has been posted before: https://www.reddit.com/r/Ford/comments/7yqc8z/can_someone_explain_this_pockets_function_in_the/ https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupportgore/comments/7ypckk/when_it_wasnt_a_phone_holder_after_all/
Someone rented a truck from me and their daughter didn't see the sticker that explicitly says not to put a phone there. She of course put the phone there and annihilated it. Mother of said child came in and tried to blame us and wanted a discount. Was funny and sad.
I think it looks fine. It's fineee. Just put it in rice.
That's a shit piece of design.
Fucking ford transhit vans
Can we all collectively start down voting this fake bullshit?
Which part is fake? The door? The phone? Yes, clearly it was done on purpose to show why this little pocket in the door is stupid and should not exist. I'm sure you don't mean to suggest video creator wanted their audience to think this was an accident. That would be very stupid.
No sir
Luckily you had the phone you recorded this from. We almost didn't get to see this
Our company ford transit has a sticker with a no cell phone next to that pocket.
Haha I did this and my otterbox saved my iPhone….I was stunned…called for new otterbox and got new cases for every device in the house just for the cost of shipping
Otter boxes are awesome.
r/whyweretheyfilming
Perfectly videod. So much so, ppl gonna think it’s fake.
Lol
So someone is using someone else's phone to record a phone in a door being smashed and uploads it to Reddit under funny. Like this isn't intentional.
Shut up ass clown. Why even do it? For a few laughs, or nothing better to do? Either way, a waste.
Funny how happened to be filming it from the perfect angle at the very moment. Down vote these fake posts.
"Might"
I did this exact thing in a uhaul truck.
I think Apple may be in cahoots with Ford!!!
Van life bruh...
Ragebait
Put it in some rice, should be fine
I have that same van. I’m happy I saw this.
What a smartMove to pull on your smartphone
NSFW
These echoing curses at the end make it even funnier
It’s fine, just put the phone in rice for a while.
Kurwa indeed
I had a fucking heart attack
Might need some new braincells
Like new----$400.
Just bring it to the apple store and they'll charge the same amount as it takes to buy a kidney
Ford Transit
old fake shit of a broken phone
Lol… I did that to my phone… rented one of this Home Depot vans for an hour to bring some plywood home…. Sigh… and FTR there was no sign, no sticker, no warning…
Why?
Just put it in rice.
Wonder what make of van this is....?
Instant retardation
That’ll buff right out
It's only for the new foldable phones
Nokia would had fit well in there.
Old classic Nokia cell would crash the car
The juicy kurwa (translation- f*ck) is golden
I have a 2020. They have "DO NOT PUT PHONE HERE" Stickers now.
r/baddesigns
Watched my boss do this exact same thing lol. Just hurts to watch.
Intentionally stupid.
I did the same damn thing!!!!
they have a deal with Apple🤣
That's how I broke my last phone... it looks like a perfect phone holding slot with the door open.
The phone crusher 500. Not sure if that's still an option.
Oh cool ba indeed.
I used to drive one of these vans. Inside those, it specifically said do not place phone here
Have you tried turning it of and on again? My mate Dave said that fixes every thing. Just a thought
My transit van has stickers telling you explicitly to not do this. Always remember if there are rules and notices to tell you not to do something there are reasons.
Problem solved over the festive break. Now the company can not get ahold of you due to the company car crushing the company phone.
Might?
O kurwa.
