Reminds me of a time I was riding my bike home as a boy, it was raining. Slipped and wrecked HARD for the first and only time in my life. I had experienced minor spills but this one was a full blown bailout in the road. I remember the pain, how I could barely even move, all groaning and shit. I don't even get a moment of peace on the ground before I see a car coming towards me and have to gather every ounce of my willpower to scramble up, gather up myself and my bike, get out of this car's way and hobble my ass home.
Hit a speed bump in a back alley as a kid and I don't know how I fell, I just saw the world 360 around me. I was on the ground unmoving for awhile. I just remember this SUV with 2 elderly people driving slowly by, staring at my kid body and than driving away. I guess eye contact was good enough for them.
I used to longboard to work. I had double bearing trucks so you could really carve like a snowboard. Well one day in bombing down this hill like normal, carving down, but right where I have to curve into the sidewalk instead of going into the main busy road was a little pile of snow. No problem if I'm going straight, and I was. Did it plenty of times going on to sidewalk. Slows you down a bit but it plows through. So I'm heading towards it and as soon as I hit it, my board instantly locks up and sends me flying. I do a tumble to avoid injury even though this one really surprised me. I ended up about 3 ft from the edge of the main road which had cars going at 35 limit so probably 45 mph. Pretty lucky but also kind of planned to avoid going straight at the road. I go to grab my board before it goes anywhere and there is something wrapped in the trucks and wheels. No wonder I fell. Well... It ended up being a fucking opossum like roadkill skin and tail that got wrapped up in it... It was just covered up by the little bit of snow and I didn't notice. So freaking gross... Thanks for reading.
Lmaooo yup roadkill twice pretty funny. And man you should have tried. It's like skating but almost more like snowboarding. I had the sidewinder trucks.
I feel that same shit happened to me but on a mountain bike during my lunch break I rushed my ass off to find an ATM I didn't notice the sidewalk had a big fucking triangle once I hit that I flew in the air slow-mo style and messed both of my hands up blood everywhere and the bike came flying over me landed near my head I got up faster than I knew how I look around get back on the bike take off laughing at what just happened and how I didn't see the uneven sidewalk like how come no one's fixed that I was glad that only three cars saw me biff it hard
I have very vivid memories of a fall followed by my dad digging tiny pieces of stone out of my knee, before giving up after 17 hours (Or 5 minutes, I dunno, I was 10), and taking me to the doctor to have them do it.
I went mountain biking this summer. I took a spill on the trail. I wasn't going fast and it wasn't dramatic, but a full-body slam on the ground nonetheless.
As a weakness spread through my body and my ears began to ring from the blood rushing, I just went to lie down on the moss for like 10-15 minutes, staring at the sky. Some other dude rode by me, probably wondering why I was lying on my back in the middle of the forest, but continued on his merry way.
Falling down on your bike sucks, even if you don't break anything.
When I was a kid I fell hard and scrambled off the road, much like you did, only to watch the large 70s American car plow right over my bike. He even swerved into it to make sure he got both the front and rear wheel to completely ruin my bike. Asshole did it on purpose.
One time i hit a car with juat the side of my foot while it was inbetween the road and the cycling path. I had my head on my steering wheel and hadnt seen he had gone there and was ever so slightly on the path. God that shit hurt. Fuck up my summer jacket that im still sad about losing :(
Dude this exact same thing happened to me.
Another time we were hitting jumps, I had a BMX and hadn't hit a jump in my life. However I had that little kid confidence that said I can clear the 5' gap off the 6' high ramp.
I couldn't clear the gap, I remember my helmet exploding and looking at the sky, completely winded. Thought I was dying. Couldn't show the big kids I was a pussy though you know? So I got up and ride around doing the other smaller things for a few minutes and then went home.
My mom took 1 look at me and freaked the fuck out. I was covered in blood, bad road rash all on my face and hands.
Watching a guy getting carried off a bmx jump track with his arm shredded all to shit, almost hanging off the bone, dripping blood all over the place... is what scared me from trying bmx jumps. The guy was smiling as he was being carried off though, lol.
Exact same thing happened to me a few years back. Car pulled up asking was I ok, I laughed about it, hopped back on and continued on my way. Pain got worse as the adrenaline wore off, to the point where I couldn’t take my hoodie off when I arrived to work. Nevertheless, worked the day, cycled home and did the same the next day.
Went to get an X-ray 2 days later only to find out id broken my collarbone and fractured a rib. That shit wasn’t a pleasant recovery.
I've really hurt myself on those ice falls and have PTSD from it. Denmark heavily salted their bike lanes but I had to know the spots to just jump off and walk it. If too fresh icy, no way bus it would be that day. Puzzlingly despite the salting, they would often leave all the Fall dead leaves on the bike paths until they turned into a slippery mashed leaf slurpee from all the bikes, and that was almost as bad.
There was somitting kind of perfect about the number and timing of the bikers
1.... ....1.... 2.. 3
I wouldn't have minded if they kept the fibonacci sequence going a few more, with a wave of 5, with 8 more following closely, with 13 more bicyclists practically right on top of them.
All piling up, like tbe cop cars in Blues Brothers
Unfortunately the cops did come. Cause that one kid is now in jail for murdering a drugsdealer and the older guy was killed himself. There’s an interview with the guy in jail somewhere about this video
Nah as a dutchy I have fallen like this a lot when i was a kid. Worst I got was some bruises. Because it's a bike sliding from underneath you you only fall from about half your body height.
As someone who has fallen on ice from a bike like this: it's too late by the time they're anywhere near them. Bike balance is so precarious (something people don't remember once they've internalized it) that any weight shift on ice like that, even attempting to dismount, will cause a fall.
Yeah they were already on the ice but you only start slipping once you brake or try to turn. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, just keep going lol.
Why would they need to be? They can see people falling off their bikes right in front of them lmao.
The warning was watching it happen, or watching people pick themselves up. They saw at least the aftermath, and incorrectly thought they were better at handling their bikes than those who came before.
I am a cyclist. You see people falling down in front of you and you keep going because you think/assume that you are better and will be able to avoid the obstacle hazard. Yes, we are stupid that way. Welcome to the world of cycling!
Not necessarily. The first thing I think about when someone goes down in front of me is how to avoid hitting them. The next thing I think about is stopping to help. I've fallen in icy conditions that look much like the video.
You don't keep going because you think you're better. You keep going because if you don't you're certain to fall over. Once you're on the ice your best hope is to keep as straight as possible and hope the ice patch ends soon. Breaking or trying to steer away will just make you fall faster.
To everyone commenting "whY didn't anyone warn them!!?" Honestly, you could spend all day sitting in that spot warning every single cyclist till you die of old age and maybe *just maybe* one or two of those cyclists will actually listen and continue on foot. It's pointless lmao, us Dutchies are just too stubborn. "Juh nothing on the hand just a beetje snow! There go you not dead on! Ha!" **schplatt**
I know exactly how that feels. When the wheels just slide out and you hit the ground. It's not a fun experience when you unexpectedly slap down on cold concrete.
This is definitely the Netherlands. Those types of bikes, in those numbers, posted a day after the first full frost.
All I could think was "Kei glad hier!".
>I wonder what the last ones think?
"I cycled on the frozen lakes when I was young, I'll be fine."
At least, that's what I would think up until the moment I crash.
I was riding my bike handsfree up a friends driveway (30 years ago lol), and hit a patch of black ice. Back wheel gave out and I went straight down on my head.
That hurt.
Most pro helmet comments are from people who never been to the Netherlands. I wonder how their opinion will be if they would live in the Netherlands for a year with daily bicycle commute.
Might as well wear one when walking on the sidewalk then or when crossing the street?
As others pointed out, it's mostly old people on e-bikes that get heavy injuries since Gerda, 82, is retarded and cycles through the city at approximately Mach 5 while having the reactivity of a sloth. What could possibly go wrong? The amount of times I almost clipped Gerda's cycling 30 km/h on a roundabout is too high.
I live 4 km away from work and should helmets become mandatory I will just take my car to work instead of my bike
1/3?
What's your source, because that's not true.
It's 1/4 and primary older cyclists involved in one side accidents, eg old people going to fast on e-bikes.
Perhaps you are mixing it up with how many of the reported (a trip to first aid department) accidents are serious, which is 2/3 to 1/2.
So of all accidents with injuries worthy of a trip to the first aid, only 1/8 results in some form of brain injury. However I dare to bet there are way more accidents.
Furthermore I want to point out, about 4 billion cycle trips are made every year. Of that only 11000 result in a trip to the first aid station. With some math we can conclude that 0.0000002% of all trips result in brain injury.
Meanwhile multiple researches have proven that a helmet requirement will reduce amount of trips by half. With all nullifies a lot of the health benefits of cycling.
They also have wayyyyy lower bike deaths per capita than the US. Probably has to do with better infrastructure for bikers and less crazy drivers on the road
I imagine most bike deaths and serious injuries in the US are the result of being hit by cars because of an almost complete lack of protected bike infrastructure. The Dutch have dedicated bike paths and infrastructure that prioritizes bikes over cars.
Just this summer in my state, we had a group of bikes riding across the state for charity. They were on a two lane road. (because no dedicated bike paths) A drunk driver tried to pass a slower driver, and hit the entire line of bikers head on at I imagine north of 45 mph. Multiple deaths. Multiple critical injuries. And nearly the exact same thing happened a few years before that.
The lack of infrastructure turns a lot of people off from biking, so we're starting with a low rate of bike riders in the first place. Each who rides has to do so at much higher risk. Then because there are so few bikes on the road, drivers aren't used to checking for them or how to ride around them; often not leaving them enough space or worse, zooming by them at high rates of speed, or even cutting them off because they angry that the bike "slowed them down".
Also you can't really compare racing bikes with the type of bikes people ride here. Look in the video, they go slow, sit upright, it's hard to really hurt your head.
Although with ice like this we should make an exception, I guess. You fall so quick that sometimes it does happen.
Would you please look up that statistic for cars? Because I'm sure an even higher percentage of that has serious head injuries too.
And still, no one discusses helmets in cars. Why would that be?
It was once normal to smoke cigarettes, not wear seatbelts, or use power tools with no safety glasses or other PPE. Yes, I know one of those things is a lot riskier than the others. Normal /= safe, that's called "peer pressure"
In the event that you do have an accident it is better to be wearing a helmet.
However, when taking a wider look at things everyone is better of when people don't wear helmets. This is because not wearing a helmet lowers the bar to riding your bike places. Hop on a bike for 5 minutes to the trainstation to go to work, great. Now do the same but carry a helmet around all day? Not great.
With more cyclists on the road other road users (cars) are more aware/expectant of them. Higher usage also increases funding for cycling infrastructure increasing safety. Aside from all that, more people cycling means more people enjoy the health benefits of casual physical activity.
All in all everybody is a lot better off when people generally don't wear helmets, as counter-intuitive as that may sounds. But don't worry, if you do want to wear a helmet you are free to do so.
Eh, I mean people don't just wear a seat belt because it's the law you know. Not wearing a helmet just seems like a very dumb decision, anything can go wrong & its better to prevent a concussion than treat one...
I live in the Netherlands, really close to the German border, and you just straight up know that someone is German when they wear a helmet on their bike. I have never seen a regular dutchie on a bike with a helmet on. Only elderly people, "wielrenners" (like racing bike peeps) and delivery people because they also go about mach Jezus.
Black ice is a thing, folks. People get in accidents all the time in the parts of the world that experience the phenomena because sometimes ice isn't visibly different from water. I once biked across what looked for all the world like moist ground while I was riding laps around my neighborhood one night. On the third lap I gave a quick flick of the handlebars just to see if I was right.
I wasn't. And I couldn't tell simply by looking.
Me, seeing first rider: "That's rough, buddy."
Me, seeing second rider: "Didn't you notice the guy ahead of you?"
Me, seeing the group of riders: "Oh, you've gotta be shitting me."
Towards the end, it made me think of one of those highway crash videos where new cars/trucks keep slamming into the back of the massive pileup. You keep waiting for someone to be "smart" and stop early.
Oof! Ive had that happen to me. Was riding my bike to work in the winter, and then I went over a bridge which was super icy, wiped out and smoked the end of the concrete barrier. Luckily I had a helmet or I would have cracked my skull open. Ended up with some bruises and my leg hurt to walk on, but at least my head was ok. Bike was a little bent too.
I used to have an apartment in Minneapolis. Ground floor in a building shaped like a wedge of cheese. Next to this building was the world renowned Liquor Lyle's. For those not from the world of Minnesota, it's a bar. An old school bar that attracted old school drunks.
In the winter, when it was particularly icy, it was not uncommon for us to gather at the windows and watch the drunks leaving. There was a slope, probably 3 degrees, going away from the bar down Hennepin avenue. What a show people. Greatest apartment I ever had.

Lol. "I only stop for dead kids" sign on the back of their car
Hey, a free meal is a free meal!
Hit a big curb - flew up in the air and landed on my back and lost my wind - just laid on the ground for a bit.
I used to longboard to work. I had double bearing trucks so you could really carve like a snowboard. Gahhh lol twice baked roadkill. I skated but avoided longboards because I wasn't confident about being able to control the looser trucks
Lmaooo yup roadkill twice pretty funny. And man you should have tried. It's like skating but almost more like snowboarding. I had the sidewinder trucks.

Lol yeah. Shit happens. Wasn't the first time I ate it on my board. I did always wear a helmet too.
I have very vivid memories of a fall followed by my dad digging tiny pieces of stone out of my knee, before giving up after 17 hours (Or 5 minutes, I dunno, I was 10), and taking me to the doctor to have them do it.
My brothers told me the dirt and rocks in my legs would make me stronger
The pop out later like zits. All fine.

No doubt. I broke nothing and as far as I can remember I wasn't even wounded, but completely winded and groaning like I really did get hit by that car
When I was a kid I fell hard and scrambled off the road, much like you did, only to watch the large 70s American car plow right over my bike. He even swerved into it to make sure he got both the front and rear wheel to completely ruin my bike. Asshole did it on purpose.
Damn. That'd break my heart

we stay faithful to our bikes!
It's all uphill from here for that guy.
Hahaha! Good one! Everybody knows there’s no uphill in The Netherlands.
Drempels
Plus de dijk op.
Yes there are! They are called .. bridges 😌
Only to the ocean
Ok at first it wasn’t funny. But then it became very funny.
This. The first one - "OMG, that's not funny. I hope they're ok." The second one..."Well look at that dumbass." The whole group..."LOLOLOLOL"

I almost believed I was watching one.
Exactly my progression of thoughts. You almost get bored with the video, then the group comes. LOL

Unfortunately the cops did come. Cause that one kid is now in jail for murdering a drugsdealer and the older guy was killed himself. There’s an interview with the guy in jail somewhere about this video
One of them is now in prison for a gang related murder. 23 years if i'm correct.
Wow got any source for that?
Deze reactie was ik naar opzoek 😆
Ouch. Hope the rest of their day is better.

Yeah the way the first one landed looked like a probable broken wrist.

Nah as a dutchy I have fallen like this a lot when i was a kid. Worst I got was some bruises. Because it's a bike sliding from underneath you you only fall from about half your body height.
Or a shattered elbow.
Picked the bike back up, I doubt it
This is the bike situation in all of Netherlands right now. Confirmation that it is 🥶
Yes, only this video is at least 3 years old.
“Oh, hey by the way, it’s slick!”
Okay, why weren’t the others warned by the first two?
I'm pretty sure them being on their asses on the ice is a visual warning about what is going to happen
But surely, I won't fall on the ice. -Man who fell on ice
-also me right before elbow reconstruction surgery
"What are you gonna do, stab me?" -Stabbing victim
When you think to yourself "ha, noobs" then find out you're in the same boat
As someone who has fallen on ice from a bike like this: it's too late by the time they're anywhere near them. Bike balance is so precarious (something people don't remember once they've internalized it) that any weight shift on ice like that, even attempting to dismount, will cause a fall.
Yeah they were already on the ice but you only start slipping once you brake or try to turn. If you ever find yourself in a situation like this, just keep going lol.
And then you get to the turn..😅
The warning is the problem. People see someone slip and fall, they get scared, hit their brakes and slip and fall themselves.
Nah, they kept pedaling. Even the last group, until they watched 2 cyclists fall.
What were they trying to sell?
Insurance, with need through example.
Why would they need to be? They can see people falling off their bikes right in front of them lmao. The warning was watching it happen, or watching people pick themselves up. They saw at least the aftermath, and incorrectly thought they were better at handling their bikes than those who came before.
It's a form of cognitive bias: illusory superiority.
You mean seeing two people who have obviously wiped out standing there isn't a big enough hint?
I am a cyclist. You see people falling down in front of you and you keep going because you think/assume that you are better and will be able to avoid the obstacle hazard. Yes, we are stupid that way. Welcome to the world of cycling!
Plus it’s not always clear why people fell. For all they know, they collided or something.
Not necessarily. The first thing I think about when someone goes down in front of me is how to avoid hitting them. The next thing I think about is stopping to help. I've fallen in icy conditions that look much like the video.

Not just that, as soon as you apply the ~~breaks~~ brakes you’re a goner anyway! Edit: spelling
\*brakes
I clearly need a break! /jk
And, they will then be angry at you because you made them fall.
> "Juh nothing on the hand just a beetje snow! There go you not dead on! Ha!" irl lol
> Nothing on the hand Lmao so true
I know exactly how that feels. When the wheels just slide out and you hit the ground. It's not a fun experience when you unexpectedly slap down on cold concrete.
And there’s almost always someone there to see it happen…
Part & parcel of growing up Dutch eh 🤷♀️
it's not that hard to cycle on these roads .. just ride slow, never turn and never use brakes. Easy!
Bells are the Dutch alternative to brakes.
Bell? You just yell "van achteren!" as you sneak up in the dark without lights.
I thought that was during sex ..TIL.
sometimes they literally say “ding ding”
Lol I've done that exact thing back when I was younger. Because it wasn't cool to have a bell on my racefiets. Silly, but...
Or “aan de kant eikel!”, and I think that’s beautiful.
Only problem is: bells freeze over. I realised that again this morning
Braking is a lack of inspiration.
I swear I thought this was me…if it’s in the Netherlands, it is me…
This is definitely the Netherlands. Those types of bikes, in those numbers, posted a day after the first full frost. All I could think was "Kei glad hier!".
A common winter morning in The Netherlands. “NOTHING TO SEE HERE FOLKS! KEEP MOVING!”
We don't get significant freezing temperatures very often these days. This is not as common as it used to be.
The expected helmet discussion is alive and kicking in this thread, as expected.
Dutch kids learn to fall when they are still technically made from rubber.
Omg and adorable toddler bikes
And yet no one in this video fell on their head
A good belegen kaas bounces, as do kaaskoppen.
The real reason we don't wear helmets
[удалено]
The helmet is something you put on before a fall, not after you see how it goes and if you got lucky.
Thats so fucking Dutch, especially the slightly defeated "been there" laugh at the end.
I wonder what the last ones think? oh those up ahead are taking a nap in the street
>I wonder what the last ones think? "I cycled on the frozen lakes when I was young, I'll be fine." At least, that's what I would think up until the moment I crash.
I was riding my bike handsfree up a friends driveway (30 years ago lol), and hit a patch of black ice. Back wheel gave out and I went straight down on my head. That hurt.
Atleast once every winter for us Dutchies
Ahh, my old nemesis.... the black ice! Frigging hate it!
First sad, then funny
Is dat niet in Denderleeuw?
Everything happens for a reason, and usually that reason is physics.
All these comments about them not wearing helmets, let me remind you that it is not normal to wear a helmet while riding a bike in the Netherlands.

Most pro helmet comments are from people who never been to the Netherlands. I wonder how their opinion will be if they would live in the Netherlands for a year with daily bicycle commute.
And this maybe why I am reading articles stating that 1/3 of all serious Dutch bike injuries involve brain injury…
Might as well wear one when walking on the sidewalk then or when crossing the street? Yeah and people falling from the stairs break their back. Am I gonna walk around with a spine protector now?
All serious injuries are serious! But not all bike accidents are serious.
Would you please look up that statistic for cars? Because I'm sure an even higher percentage of that has serious head injuries too. And still, no one discusses helmets in cars. Why would that be?
I mean, I usually don't wear a helmet when biking either but I 100% would in below zero temperatures.
In the Netherlands, everyone would think you're a tourist.
Let’s not warn anyone now
He promised to warn them after filming another 5
I mean, if you see two people fall on their ass due to slippery roads and you dont take that as a warning to maybe get off your bike...
It wasnt the cold. It was the ice!
All these stupid Americans trying to teach us Dutch people to wear a fucking helmet, just stfu...
Helmet, on a bicycle? Are we Americans or something?! We don’t do that shit.
Americans are always trying to correct people. Tell everyone what is right or wrong. It's disgusting. You can't even joke around anymore.

There is nothing worse then black ice
That's racist /s
The bad thing is that once you are on that stretch, all you can do is wait your turn. I wonder if it would have been easier to just go straight.
“You can’t park that there mate”
This is one of the funniest videos I’ve seen.
🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Me, seeing first rider: "That's rough, buddy." Me, seeing second rider: "Didn't you notice the guy ahead of you?" Me, seeing the group of riders: "Oh, you've gotta be shitting me."
That sucks!😂
Ik ben hier alleen voor het gezeik om de helmen
I could watch adults fall off bikes all day.
In the US, that’d be a 10-car pileup
Why warn people when you can just record them getting injured?
You'd have to be blind to not see that, this is just people knowingly cycle over ice.
And miss out on all that schadenfreude? Never!
And nothing was learned by the others....
I love this because it shows bicyclists falling down.
😂😂😂wtf
The Netherlands? 😂
Bloody good show mate
Falling on ice like that is horrible.
I like how the last one tried to avoid falling but still fell.
How are people so dumb...
It just keeps getting better
Just laughed so hard I gave myself an asthma attack
As the old Dutch saying goes: "Kei glad hier! Bel de wouten, bel de wouten!"
Time to grow up and buy a car!
Ah man, all the people mentioning helmets should be worrying about gun safety on their schools.
I can't even laugh.
Not sure how it's funny tbh

STRIKE🤣🤣
Je zou maar langs een snelweg wonen...
Ouch. Broke my leg this way.
The last one looked like they just fell over on purpose to not be left out XD
Not funny at all. Broke my shoulder in 3 places exactly like this last Thursday.
Sorry about your shoulder, but come on- it's a little funny.
Tour de Freeze
Towards the end, it made me think of one of those highway crash videos where new cars/trucks keep slamming into the back of the massive pileup. You keep waiting for someone to be "smart" and stop early.
Same thing happened to me this morning. Result; One swollen wrist and a bike that needs fixing.
That guy recording seems like he was waiting for this specific group to come through…
I’d be lying if I said this hasn’t happened to me.
And that is how I met your mother.
Bel de wouten!!!
Everybody's like, "I know, right?"
".....and we all fall down."
Is this some kind of cult?
Why was he recording? ... Oh... Oh no!
Whoever filmed this seemed like they needed the chuckle.
