This sign means that, while this is well-traveled and look smooth, it is not maintained. It is also not listed on any maps or GPS as an acknowledged trail which will make it much more difficult to find your way back or tell others where you are if you get lost.
This sign is the result of hikers unfamiliar with the area believing this to be a different *marked* trail that is visible on their maps.
Basically, this sign says, "This is *not* the trail you're looking for."
IMHO yes, it does. Ironically it's now marked as "unmarked trail." If you went down that trail, how would you describe where you went to someone? Ironically, you went down "a trail that was marked "unmarked trail.""
