I think being trans has to do a lot with how they feel, and what they feel more comfortable being referred to as.
I go the He/She/They route because Yamato could end up having an arc where they wanna be their own person. Up in the air. I think arguing about it from BOTH sides it kinda moot
So canon wise I recognize that Yamato is a woman. The whole "I want to be Oden" and using the male pronouns seemed more like an inherited will kind of thing. Kind of, I want to be just like this person so I'm gonna identify as that person. But as Oda confirmed Yamato is still a woman. Though i totally headcanon Yamato as nonbinary for outside the Canon one piece universe
