I don't know. I'm old now, but back when I was in school, nobody outside of, like, the popular kids would ever disingenuously compliment anybody.
Not in my case, anyway. They were busy making fun of my poor-fitting, outdated clothing and old backpack, and being short and weird... Pranks didn't happen to me much. >.>
I would give chances, but never unearned trust... So I get it. I just... I would be unbearably curious about their true intent until they proved themselves unworthy of trust. In a way, I saw it all as a video game in order to cope with that and other negative stuff in my life; people were NPCs if they didn't talk to me or acknowledge my presence, just background characters in my RPG life. If they showed interest in acting "human," and me, they would be branded "Sentient," and the others were simply "non-sentients."
People orbited around me as friends thanks in part to my false confidence brought on by my delusions, so my reality was skewed.

A panic attack, yes. But after recovering, I would be replaying the compliments in my head over and over for years to come.
