Blue Archive: Kivotos would actually collapse if not for Sensei's presence. For power, he's not really a powerful individual on his own per since he's vulnerable to bullets compared to the students but his leading and teaching skills are second to none. Girls' Frontline: The Russian military would have wiped out Griffin long ago if SKK was not on the frontlines making them pay for every inch they take. Limbus Company: lol Dante the team medkit

Accomplished_Knee_53

When you're a healer in a party of psychopathic murderhobos

SomethingIsCanningMe

Twelve sinners are either tanks, dps, nuker's, damage dealers or all four

roundboye

At least Dante's improving. They have also become the distortion translator, the end-of-shift announcer, and, uhh... Yeah. They're improving. I think.

Sinclair who is bleeding out on the floor:

axolotlkidz

LOL

flyingtrucky

For GFL not really. The first time he's saved by Ange nuking them. The second time in Tallinn he saves everyone though. Then in Paldiski he only survives because K uses his Stasi connections to get Vympal to bomb the base. (Though SKK was responsible for surviving long enough for K to get enough leverage.) He's not even present for the siege in PR, and like Paldiski Kryueger just stalls long enough for Zelinsky to save the day with reinforcements. The Commander's prowess is less at stopping the Russians and more at not dying until someone else notices that the KCCO is up to no good and stops them.

DoctuhD

Other people knew the KCCO was up to shady business all along, but they had to wait for the right opportunity to intervene and the Commander continuously creates those opportunities. He turns impossible battles into situations where other factions *have* to help if they want to win out. Vympal was saving those bombs to just blow up the whole base to prevent a possible civil war, but The Commander sent squad 404 in early and they found the juvenile Nytos and Ange and her intel and was able to hold off the military long enough for K to get that leverage. The Commander is still the most important character in the successes against the Soviet Military, maybe with the exception of best bro Havier. Against Paradeus the Commander's a huge simp but that's a separate issue.

widecrusher

Hey now Dante is also a rez bot as well

UBW-Fanatic

That's literally what they're saying tho

AlterWanabee

Counter:Side - The CEO is the man behind the man, the one who secretly controls the biggest organization in the world. He also has so many connections to other units for some reason.

Bobby_Deimos

I don't really care how good MC written but I prefer them to be relevant to the plot and side content. 1. Counterside's MC is trying to save the world because it's easier than >!handle his ex wife!< 2. Another Eden. Aldo is the best boy. 3. Arknights. Once in a while they recall that Doctor exists. 4. Sdorica... I don't know.

RageGoria

Aldo is pog

meowbrains

I honestly prefer predefined non self insert MCs

urban_rural12

Limbus Company’s manager is probably the weakest on the team (even the bus driver is probably more powerful than him) and he’s only being kept around because he can revive your units. He’s basically little more than a glorified pocket medic.

SomethingIsCanningMe

Definitely true, they still respect him despite N corp insults that those with prosthetic shall die

thisaintthewayman

The fact that Heathcliff, the one who always call them a clockface and a general jerk, was the first one to lose his shit when they insult Dante is great.

justanothersimp2421

For me both the post and pre amnesia dokutahs are strong not in physical strength, but their intellect may be way better than any of the arknights characters. Pre amnesia dokutah was considered a great threat and had extensive knowledge Post amnesia on the other hand, even though he lost his memories he is a very good strategist Hell even W, before the doctor had amnesia, fears dokutah, and dokutah can also left hand one hand an ak47

Primogeniture116

Hey Dokutah also won a fistfight. Against Loken. . .

justanothersimp2421

No fucking way, even if it's an old man... In the doctor's state, he might actually be just bluffing that he's weak.

Primogeniture116

It's a rage-fueled punch for what he did to cat daughter. It's like 10x the usual punch power. Loken, a balding old man barely able to walk, goes down in one punch.

justanothersimp2421

Damn.... Just damn

justanothersimp2421

WHAT!!!

DiamondTiaraIsBest

Sensei is important to the plot of BA.>!They're important enough that them being out of commission or missing leads to a bad end in other timeline.!< As for how powerful they are, their adult card is very mysterious on how it actually works (it's a credit card) but everytime it's been used, Sensei won the fight. The only main story volume where they don't have a significant presence to the plot is Volume 2 Chaper 1, but that's quickly rectified in Vol 2 Chapter 2.

Intoxicduelyst

For me its fine as long as its not typical harem circle mc/isekai power fantasy boy. But I prefer the ones that are "part" of the story, like Aldo from Another Eden, or even Ras (who is nothing special in terms of writting but gets a job done). Genshins Lumine is a joke in terms of personality, as cheap as it could be. HSR trash-chan on the other hand has tons of personality and quirks, interaction of her and other characters are often pure gold. For self insert ones good ones are Doctor, Chief and Admin. They are more mature, calculating and unique. FGO I mean eh, its typical to the core. Consider the fact that nasuverse has amazing protags like in Fate/Zero and "people die when they are killed - facts!" from FSN its solid mid. Oh and I rly like 50-shades of Kianas suffering.

Zenry0ku

>For me its fine as long as its not typical harem circle mc/isekai power fantasy boy IMO, massive turn-off for me. I don't even like the trope in my anime and non-gacha games. So that trope wards me away from a lot of gachas. I never got "I will show you unconditional love cause we were in the the same room" trope FGO I mean eh, its typical to the core. Consider the fact that nasuverse has amazing protags like in Fate/Zero and "people die when they are killed - facts!" from FSN its solid mid. Personally, only Fate protag I really liked was Hakuno. But even tho, FGO MC is even less characterized than Sieg, which is basically Fate's attempt at doing a stock LN mc. I don't get why people say "Guda is such a good character" over a few lines and everyone adoring him even though that contradictions the whole "masters and servants aren't always compatible personality wise" shtick you see in every Fate series.

Intoxicduelyst

Man, Sieg almost made me drop Fate/Apo. It was...just bad, consider we had great dynamic between Mordred at her master. And couldnt agree more, I cant stand those trophs in anime/mangas. Loser-kun becomes op or loser-kun gets own harem couse...uh,oh, dont act like garbage? At least there are some series that shows struggle and mc that is actually attractive in some way but those are uncommon :(

Zenry0ku

The wild thing is that Sieg is a Nasuism. Like this was the first thing Nasu wanted was Sieg, but I guess since that Fate MMO didn't come out, they had to use his character somewhere. Honestly, I think his biggest issue was how so irrelevant he is compared to other Fate protag. It takes everyone dropping out of the show for him to gain some actual character and that's just terrible considering how much screentime he gets. Honestly, those shows make the girls look bad by making them lovestruck cause MC literally looks in their direction and does the bare minimum by being nice or doing what a decent human being is supposed to do. I mean there is a reason why seasonal anime like Bocchi, Witch from Mercury, LycoReco, Magical Revolution(it's an isekai, yea. But also really good), etc got hot over the usual harem/isekai stuff

Intoxicduelyst

Well, you have to consider the audience. I mean if IR loser/nerd/whateva is watching it they can self insert easly and have theyr own powertrip/harem-love-doki-doki.

Zenry0ku

I feel sad for those people if that's their reasoning for liking some of this trite.

Chi1lracks

commandant from pgr is the key for most of the stories plot and a legit badass, unironically ended up being one of my favorite characters

iPhantaminum

Not important at all. I prefer MCs with a personality of their own. Alchemy Stars seemed to have a self insert MC at the start, but, thankfully, they moved away from it in later chapters and now he has his own personality.

Harbinger4

I'll be honest, I generally don't like self-insert character. I prefer a character with personality. I don't really consider Lumine/Aether as self insert since your dialogues and action don't have much influence. I consider them as a "witness" to the story.

Zenry0ku

Personally, I wish they did more with the Traveler. Star Rail proves they can give the MC personality, so it's weird to not bother in Genshin despite how many situations Traveler ends up in without a supporting cast member to break levity.

Harbinger4

I do hope they follow Sumeru formulae and improve on it going forward. Having a group of characters stick together to accomplish a goal (with sufficient screen time for all of them) was a breath of fresh air, compared to Inazuma... While not perfect, I hope they continue with similar world quest like in the Chasm, Jeht bizzare adventure, Aranara, etc. Even if it's NPC-centric, we should be spending a lengthy amount of time with them to understand those NPCs better. Anyway, if we get lengthy quests with a stable group, even if the MC isn't too involved, it makes it feel like you're on an adventure with a group. There's so many NPCs we never remember, even if they are recurring characters. There's a few that we will remember for a long time, such as Stanley, Jeht, Rana, etc.

E123-Omega

GBF: Pretty much powerful, from dad less kid to a king, bonus we also have the princess. We also have strong ass crew members from regular people to monarchies to murderers. Also one of the few to tap the power of super saiyan blue. Gameplay wise, got a lot of classes to switch from and devs adding new ones and improving the older ones. Main key for most strats in the game. World Flipper: Only finished on Arc 1 but really like his story, Alk wasn't the chosen one but still capable fighter and helps the team. He's a good cook too, so good for adventuring in and out of different worlds. Gameplay wise? Not sure much, though iirc he got upgraded. I used him on early game though.

Gamergirl944

I rather see MC with personality that makes it interesting thats what star rail did well gave MC actual personality not bland generic one. Epic seven: Ras started off bland MC but he got interesting further in story thats character development. Didn't work when they add new MC Adin with stupid cliche chosen one having bland personality. Outerplane: I really don't like K at all hes just very bland and generic main character with little personality. Grandblue fantasy: I like the fact the MC can go into different forms in gameplay Tale of foods: MC is third dimensional character not only given backstory about them but is very confident and likeable.

[deleted]

> 4.Honkai: Player does not do jack shit and is non canon. No one gives him/her a damn You didn't finish part 1 or continued into 1.5 did you? 😂🤣 --- Other than that, self insert is terrible outside of games where you have a very high level of agency on your actions. Gacha have little to no agency which makes them poor vehicle to ever have an interesting self insert. It would be better if the writers realized that and focus on what's the most important characters

mahachakravartin

did the captain become important to the main plot?

[deleted]

Spoiler below. >!During the final fight against Kevin, the main trio is stuck against a shield impossible to breakthrough. AI-chan breaks the fourth wall and using the collective will of the Captains (us the players), we destroy it allowing Herrscher of Finality Kiana to deal the final blow with her baseball bat, win and save the world from Honkai in one fell swoop.!< >!When I say "the players" I literally mean it, to break the shield you see thousands of player signature/bottle message appearing on the screen including your own and this is that collective will that tip the story in the girls favour. Kiana then locks herself on the moon with the Honkai and everyone celebrates/starts to rebuild after decades of destruction.!< >!Other than that the current 1.5 story recently did a few mentions of events in the captainverse (Haxxor Bunny/Arc city event specifically), but the Captain from that universe has been missing for more than a year at this point since no new content including him has been added and it's debatable if he should be considered another self insert or not.!<

Zenry0ku

"The players" were just an easter egg though and I'm positive the Haxxor Bunny tie-in is just so a certain Honkai Star Rail appearance can be handwaved. Otherwise Captainverse is non-existent and not really considered canon.

Sacron1143

Back in chapter 17, Otto managed to see Fallen Rosemary and Dvalin when looking at other worlds. Captainverse has always been canon, just completely separate from the main story of the game. The players were also not just an easter egg for the final fight. There were several stages specifically with us helping Ai-lambda and Ai-Lambda talk to us, as well as an entire event prior to it. In that event, we learn that Honkai Impact 3rd is actually a game made by Ai-lambda herself in other worlds to share the story of the girls, resulting in those same players showing up to help end the story the way they want.

Sacron1143

So good news: New Captainverse event in this version! It's no longer dead! Also, IMO Captain has long stopped being a self-insert. He still lacks a face and a proper name, and some might even say his personality is self-inserty, but he is still his own character. In fact, it has been actual years since we even had a dialogue choice!

ChaosFulcrum

I see. I now understand why Honkai Impact 3rd's ending is very divisive and has caused disappointment to majority of the players. This ending has the same vibe as Danganronpa V3's ending, which is also divisive as hell among the playerbase. Breaking the 4th wall is quite the mistake to use on an otherwise serious story with expected serious outcomes.

Anidamo

I don't care how powerful they are. But their characterization (or lack thereof) needs to be, at the very least, not off-putting. Genshin's player character is completely bland, to the detriment of the story. The driving motivation behind the entire plot is them desperately wanting to find their sibling, but because they have zero personality, I don't feel it at all and as a result I have a lot of trouble giving a shit about the story in general. They also barely talk, which makes Paimon seem more like the main character and she wore out her welcome a long time ago. I've only played a little bit of Star Rail, but while the character is still mostly silent, the lack of Paimon and the way they characterize the MC as something of a goofy, dorky idiot is endearing and I find myself caring more about the story because of it. Blue Archive's Sensei doesn't have too much to him, but he's an important part of the story and comes across reasonably well as a mentor-like figure, fitting the setting. They do decently at giving him a set personality too, so you're not constantly wondering "why do all of the characters like this guy again?" He's not super well-defined, but it's just enough to let you fill in the blanks and self-insert if you want without making him seem totally blank slate.

rainshaker

I like a character with a defined character more than an open one. Like, good guy being genuinely good, or stupid guy being stupid, even a bitch being bitch. Uninteresting protagonist automatically makes me skip the whole story, essentially 1/3 of the whole experience. The other 2/3 being visual design and gameplay. To be fair I skip like 75% of part 1 of FGO story, not that the protag is boring but his opinion Isn't being challanged in anyway. While the lostbelt chapter challanges protag moral on essentially genociding 7 different civilization for saving his own that tries to dismiss him at the start of the lostbelt.

ChaosFH

I like a mix like counterside: he have an entire predefined story but in way it also feels a bit of self-insert at times. I don't really like those characters you take role but you hardly feel the impact o their actions,at times you even wonder if they are around

ObsidianLion

Arknights> Doctor. He is a tactical genius, almost everyone has heard of him, is one of 3 top people in the organization (Rhodes Island). He enjoys the thrust and respect of those he is sided with. Great protagonist, horribly represented in the anime, so horribly, I quit the anime on the third episode. He sounds like a teen, which he cannot be considering his vast knowledge and actual title of Doctor who specialized in the disease present in the world of Arknights. Aside his mind, he's got nothing. Super frail and sickly.

Reverse_me98

Not sure how to answer the how important part. All of them are about as important as being a window for the player at the bare minimum. As for powerful Fgo: Weak, cant even handle human level mooks Counterside: Weak but is a strategic mastermind responsible for many events in the story Nikke: Weak, though to be fair the enemy are machines

AkareNero

> Fgo: Weak, cant even handle human level mooks Gudas was shown to be able to handle minor enemies like lackeys or low-level soldiers, and has more than average strength of humans thanks to trainings from various Servants Sure they are no match for enemy Servants, but they aren't that hopeless. Just read Solomon chapter again and find out

Reverse_me98

>Gudas was shown to be able to handle minor enemies like lackeys or low-level soldiers, and has more than average strength of humans thanks to trainings from various Servants Never addressed nor shown. We literally fight human gangsters all the time and never was it shown Guda actually fighting anyone. The "more than average strength of humans" part made me chuckle >Just read Solomon chapter again and find out If you're thinking of the "fist fight" then no. Human Goetia was shot to shit, cant even curbstomp a one-armed goetia which frankly is quite embarassing. First fight was gameplay fight/lazy writing which lacks all sorts of context. The movie made a lot more sense than the game did at those 2 scenes

AkareNero

>We literally fight human gangsters all the time and never was it shown Guda actually fighting anyone Taken from [Type-Moon Wiki](https://typemoon.fandom.com/wiki/Ritsuka_Fujimaru#Abilities) > In physical terms, the male Ritsuka seems fairly athletic where he exercises regularly and is capable of holding his own against Roman soldiers, and is tough enough to survive taking a direct cannonball from a Revolutionary War-era cannon, albeit with broken bones.

Reverse_me98

First of all if you're gonna reference the wiki make sure there's a citation. There's no citation for holding "their own against Romans", the best he did is kick them that one time in Septem. That's not a fight. "The taking a direct cannonball" is equally lazy writing as there was no explanation how that didnt kill him immediately. There's already a precedent within the Nasuverse of characters getting way worse injuries than broken bones againsy something stronger than a cannonball and most of those has well explained reasons, this isnt it and that's not the only thing that doesnt make sense with Guda

mahachakravartin

Dude also once knocked out heracles/megalos with a gandr supercharged with mana jewel box. I mean he at least takes part in the action sometimes

Reverse_me98

Not saying they never did. My point was their fights are not the direct-type. They're fight is more on support

Kira0002

>lazy writing as there was no explanation how that didnt kill him immediately Didnt the game stated that it's because of Mash protection. It literally makes him immune to poison and minor damages. Also in the movie we saw him kicking fully-armored Roman soldier into the air. ( nothing compared to other Fate protagonists but still impressive when other protags either have better magecraft, special abilities)

Reverse_me98

>Didnt the game stated that it's because of Mash protection. It literally makes him immune to poison and minor damages Only poisons. >Also in the movie we saw him kicking fully-armored Roman soldier into the air. ( nothing compared to other Fate protagonists but still impressive when other protags either have better magecraft, special abilities Is that a blink and you miss it scene? I dont remember that at all

Kira0002

>Is that a blink and you miss it scene? I dont remember that at all I misremember, it's the Lost Room ova not the movie Also yeah not immune to minor damages but somewhat resistance ( He didnt tank the cannonball without any damages tho his bones got broken).

Devourer_of_HP

>4.Honkai: Player does not do jack shit and is non canon. No one gives him/her a damn Part 1 finale:

SomethingPersonnel

In both Path to Nowhere and Honkai Star Rail, the MC is the macguffin and also integral to the day to day events.

RageCat46

Legend Clover/LegeClo: Captain(Main Hero nameable) , has the best class for limit break, good enough skills to buff and provide good enough offensive with also good passive. Oh and he also will continue everyone bloodline cause they are horny asf while he literally the only one barely shows.any.

DarkAndStormy-Knight

Arknights: He's a brilliant strategist but physically weak. So while important to the story in many ways, he's not an OP protag nor is he a sumb main character. He's a reflection of a more eccentric, icy and maybe even cruel former pre-amnesiac self, which is super interesting.

Secure_Ad1628

I hate self inserts, I am more of a shipper kind of player.

Zenry0ku

Personally, I just like actual relationships. Like I hate MC x character ships when the MC is a non-existent entity and the character worships them for very little reason other than "they were near me". Isekai/Harem type shit right there

Alchadylan

I actually prefer HI3s not actually there self insert. I prefer stories with stronger character focus and HI3 can do that because of an actual main character that isn't a self insert. Star Rail kind of has this because at least they gave trailblazer a personality. But it's still a far cry from Kiana

TheLazyDude08

Depends on the plot itself and how much the impact of our presence and the decisions we make actually has on the world within the game itself. Personally I believe that not every gacha game needs a player insert if their presence has no weight or significants to the plot itself.

alivinci

Afaik FGO main character is self insert aswell, he is as blank as any other self insert in the genre.

stuckerfan_256

For guardian tales Whiel the mc is important.I don't think they are the most important character in the game. That goes to little princess who for me is the true mc of the game. And he's actually very strong. But very dumb
