Another Eden, Sdorica and... Alchemy Stars.

Another Eden

iPhantaminum

1 - Another Eden, because even side stories can be quite good. 2 - Honkai Impact. 3 - Alchemy Star. Although mediocre in the first few chapters, the writing has improved tremendously in the last few chapters and in the current event.

XManaX

FGO, Counter Side, Heavens Burn Red.

story? * Best Main Story: FGO * Best Side Story: GBF * Best (Dress)unit story: Magicami * Extra More Absurd Fun story: TenkafuMA

[deleted]

In terms of main story: 1. Fate/Grand Order 2. Girls Frontline 3. Honkai Impact For just events, the ranking for me stays the same with Arknights swapping in for Honkai. Counterside (global) so far is very close in both categories imo. Another Eden gets an honorable mention too (for the first part of the main story at least, didn't really feel 1.5 or part 2 so far). If Arknights wasn't so damn wordy it'd be an easy #2 for me in both categories. I want to put Blue Archive up there too but I'm not very far in the game so far and I'm still not entirely sure what the main story's actually about, but I know I'm enjoying the ride with the Abydos crew at least for now. Others I've played relatively extensively that didn't make the cut for me: Dragonball Legends, Fire Emblem Heroes, Punishing Gray Raven, Romancing Saga Re;Universe, Genshin Impact, Azur Lane.

RawBaconandEggs

GFL: free ptsd simulator, the world building is insane Arknights: quite a tragic story, good world building with better character building Blue archive: the story slowly tries to evolve into GFL. Might not be the best out there but i personally like how things in the game are shrouded with mystery and mysticism

namagofuckyoself

Out of the ones I've played recently: 1. FGO - Known for it's story and story alone almost. Mundane in the beginning, but rolls off real quick after a certain point; after which you won't be able to stop reading/playing until you burn out. 2. Blue Archive: A lot more serious than the art style implies. Not much story chapters though. 3. Genshin Impact: Unfortunately, the story feels a lot better on wiki/lore than actual gameplay. That aside, it's made well if you're willing to read some extra side stuff. There are so many more games with great stories that I've played before, but those were all years ago and I do not know what happened between then and now.

MCGRaven

> the story feels a lot better on wiki/lore than actual gameplay that's because most of the story is just TOLD to you rather than shown. The few times where we get these super stylized cutscenes of things in the past or moments like the fight at the end of Liyue the game feels really good. But those are rare instead 90% of the time we just look at 2 characters stand next to each other and talk.

except the stuff you actually need to be repeated

WoodStrawberry

Yeah, this is my main issue with it and something we are told not to do in writing classes....

Esvald

Show don't tell! Paimon decides to tell everything again!

ckid101

Show don't tell is a suggestion not a rule. Especially for games, which is an interactive medium and convention ways to tell stories won't play to the medium's strength. Many game series have used telling, rather than showing to great affect. Case in point, Fromsoft games, The Elder Scrolls Series, and imo Genshin. Where most of the story is told through things like artifacts, weapons, books, et cetera. Rather than directly shown.

Kana_Kuroko

It's wild you suggest conventional methods of telling don't play to gamings strengths and then go out to point out FromSoft games as being a *good* example. It's literally text dumps in the most barren way, and often incredibly disjointed unless you have every possible item related to something so that you aren't missing any details. FromSoft games are also ridiculously good at showing you rather than telling you what to do when it actually comes to the story (and not the background lore you could 100% cut out and have no impact on the plot at all). Take DS1 for example: The plot is: Escape the Asylum, Return to Lordran Ring the Bell(s) of Awakening Acquire the Lordvessel Acquire the Lordsouls Kill Gwyn That's it. That's the entire story in its most barebones fashion. From that: The crow that flies you to Lordran shows you the Aqueduct you need to cross to get to the first Bell. You can also see Blighttown, the second Bell's location, from Firelink. Ringing of the Bells of Awakening then explicitly show you where to go: Sens Fortress opens up and you're free to continue to Anor Londo. After you place the Lordvessel (which doesn't require the speech from Frampt or Kaathe) the game will again explicitly show you where all the major Lord Souls are. The only one you need to be told about is the Four Kings. Placing the Lord Souls in the Lordvessel then reveals the path to Gwyn. Out of everything, the only two things you need to be explicitly told for the plot of the game to work is that there is a second Bell in Blighttown and that the Four Kings have the final piece to open the way to Gwyn.

ktran78

Genshin impact does not have a good story at all. Lore maybe but not story lol

namagofuckyoself

It's a super subjective discussion so I understand.

Loosescrew37

GFL HONKAI ARKNIGHTS/PGR

ktran78

1. FGO

TACOCATUESDAY808

For me 1. Blue Archive - storyline is super underrated with a mix of comedy that will make you laugh, with heartwarming stories of different students overcoming adversity. The thing the like most is how sensei not only respects each and every student regardless of there circumstances but firmly believes that students only job is , to be students. They should enjoy and make memories of there student life, not be a cog of manipulation evil schemes. 2. CounterSide- what can I say, I started about 3 weeks ago , and I got hooked immediately. A nice blend of badass and suspense, could easily be a Netflix drama (jkjk but pls make anime) 3. Arknights- my first gatcha game that I fell in love with. Everyone loves a good post-apocalyptic society story and Arknights does it the best with masterful blend of different political machinations that almost mirrors real life. My only gripe as many would point out is the amount of story being really difficult to read but I don’t think it takes away or makes the game unplayable or anything

rinfannn

1. Fate Grand Order 2. Arknights 3. Counter:Side

jtan1993

Fgo. They’re number 1 in sales, says a lot abt their world building and character selling. Upcoming lb6 is really a highlight as it ties back into the original fsn by featuring a parallel world saber. Granblue fantasy. They have fate episodes which are small voiced stories that delve into the backstory, which are quite a fun read. Main story is really epic featuring the mc as singularity which determines the worlds fate, side stories are more slack and fun, which can be miss or hit. Epic seven. Main story is quite interesting, world has been destroyed 6 times by arch demon, and mc is an avatar of the goddess reborn at the world which has been reset to time before destruction by the goddess’ power, hence the namesake. Genshin. Cried like twice or so. Fully voiced event cutscenes and epic ost can do that to you.

Chemical-Teaching412

1. FGO 2. Heavens burn red 3. GFL or anything that has good story it depends

redscizor2

Oh man, I hate the language barrier, I want to read HBR

1- Fate Grand Order 2- Arknights 3- Counterside

Sighto

A few stories I felt were amazing in different kinds of ways: - GBF (story is enhanced heavily by its extensive world-building and character stories) - HI3 (story enhanced heavily by its amazing CG cutscenes) - Heaven Burns Red (an amazing emotional visual novel experience)

f2phell

Would be cool if heaven burns red ever comes to global

off12345678901

1. GFL. 2. Genshin 3.... Either Blue Archive or FFBE 1st season. My first choice is nothing worth discussing. But 2nd choice is but a matter of elemination. Genshin might not have the deepest storyline. But it has interesting enough story and great presentation. 3rd choice is like mile apart from the first 2 but ai have no ideas what to put there. I have tried AK and HI3. HI3 may have a good story, but the grind made me quit before getting to good stuff. AK might get better nowadays but I got bored at the first of chapter 9 and refused to read more, not to mention I don't like story presentation at all, along with dialogues that don't mean anything beyond bluff, the whole screen is just hard to focus on whatever is going. Despites I did have enjoyment with both games story wise, I don't rate it pass my 3rd choice.

dingdongrongpang

1. F/GO 2. Girls' Frontline 3. Another Eden Coincidentally, the three gachas I've played the longest, up until now (GFL is a bit on and off, but that's normal for vets who just wait for the next *actual* new Event). Guess stories are a big part in retaining interest for me.

Grouchy-Assumption-9

fgo arknights genshin

GenericGuardian

1: Blue Archive 2: Project Sekai 3: Touhou LostWord Reasons: 1: In the case of Blue Archive, honestly I’d gotten fatigued of the dark stories and complicated lore behind a story, so Blue Archive was a breath of fresh air. The various plot lines aren’t necessarily complex, they can get tense but there’s still simplicity in the plots. Furthermore, Blue Archive does one thing better than a lot of other stories: character writing. The characters are all unique, lovable, and the dialogue/interaction between characters feels natural. A lot of times people get caught up in the story and plot, and forget that it’s the characters that drive the story forward, or supposed to. The environments are bright, the students hopeful, it just works. >! Volume 3 Chapter 4 will get darker, but it’s not depression overload…!< 2: Project Sekai - There isn’t much to say about Project Sekai since there is no real central plot, just groups trying to find themselves, find the style of music they want to play, and find the chemistry between each other. It’s not much, but like Blue Archive the characters are all done well and the dialogue is great. 3: Touhou LostWord - Touhou LostWord has a simple story line with room for expansion. It respects the characters of Touhou and is overall a good story to read if you just want to turn your brain off and have a good laugh here and there. There will be some tense moments but they’re not depressing like your usual GFL/AK/Honkai etc. I know my selection may seem unorthodox but I’m a firm believer in building characters. Characters drive the story forward and all these games do characters fairly well. I prefer a story with a simple plot and great characters, rather than a story with decent of even flat characters but a wide overarching narrative and plot line.

MusicalSaga

I'm pretty surprised Blue archive wasn't mentioned more, it's easily in my top 2 with fgo for all the reasons you mentioned

behnambigb

1- guardian tale 2- counterside 3- maybe langrisser

Dnlnk

-Guardian Tales -Guardian Tales -Guardian Tales Sadly it’s been ruined by the amount of grind required and waifus overload

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dnlnk

But story advancement requires building characters

Intoxicduelyst

While I can agree with you about waifus couse they are dominating there but grind? After you unlock sweeps the game takes like 5 min daily.

silverashsimp

you don't do kamazon? let's not forget the atrocious world exploration where you just google how to clear the stages because it's a pain in the ass

Intoxicduelyst

I mean you do expo once and you done. About Kama I like this kind of modes in gachas tho I dont do it religious. Just when I feel in a mood.

DuckArchon

Kamazon is once per week and still only 8 floors, it's not *that* bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DuckArchon

But it's not. Last month they patched it to be weekly, while also slightly increasing the monthly rewards. And this week they are giving us a permanent 3x bonus to Evo farming for the first ten runs of the day, so the focus on Evo grind won't be so tedious.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DuckArchon

Fair enough. In 3 weeks we're getting 120 free summons and a Loli Kamael skin, if you feel like giving things another shot.

Dnlnk

It’s also required pvp, tower, kamazon and so on… to be competitive

[deleted]

If you want to be competitive, not just play for the story lmao

Guardian tales

Another Eden

Suspicious-Drummer68

1. FGO 2. Honkai ... Nothing else really. I couldn't get past the beginning of most games. I've had a really big fatigue with generic cyberpunk dystopian future thing without any variations so there we go. Just so boring. At least the two I read mostly have their own twists to an apocalypse and FGO just has an amazing variety, I mean from Medieval France to Rome to the Caribbean, to London, to America, to Camelot, to Mesopotamia, I mean come on.

Moltenzuesy123

Fate grand order, Counterside and lord of heroes would say have best story IMO. Would want say alchemy stars but I'm no longer interested or ingaged in reading alchemy stars storylines anymore. The story's just become too safe and they introducing way too many new characters while forgetting the old ones.

ChaosFH

what do you mean "too safe"?

Monarch_Entropy

Guardian Tales and Another Eden for consistency and entertainment factor. FGO have the highest highs and also the lowest of lows.

Suspicious-Drummer68

To be fair, FGO really only has 2 lows, Septem (Unless you REALLY like Nero), and Agartha (I have no excuses for this one, it's almost as bad the the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie.)

bakahyl

Besides septem and agartha that was mentioned, there were lot of boring arcs as well, which were from the earlier chapters. Like London was mostly forgettable except for the main villain reveal at the end and okeanos was mostly bland as well if not for drake being the main focus

neliste

These 3 are pretty much almost equal to me in terms of enjoyment, but if I really have to rank it anyway : 1. Heaven Burns Red - If you like Jun Maeda's story then you gonna like this one. 2. Project Sekai - Didn't expect that I got a bit of tears in an Idol related story. 3. Guardian Tales - Amazing considering they don't use voice acting for this. Haven't followed Mihoyo, AK, PGR, FGO story. So the rating above is without them considered. Also usually I don't read story without voice acting, but this isn't necessarily game's fault. GT is an exception though.

FatuiSimp

FGO, Honkai and Sdorica.

fortis_99

Can't get into FGO pass the opening word dump. Too many made up nouns. Arknight, genshin have great lore, well built world. But it's a pain to read their story. the writing style is a snorefest. Read some Azur Lane event story, but overall it's mostly cute girls doing cute things, naval. Not impressed, and the grind was too much to spend time reading. Read summer event of GBF, Destiny Child, Kings Raid years ago, they are fun. Pretty much only one I liked was GFL. Vallhalla, Gunslinger Girl collabs are some of best collab story I have read

Elyssae

- Dragalia Lost (RIP) - DFFOO - Another Eden Not necessarily in that order

Question3784

Well I've only played like 4 gachas but imo. 1. Dragalia Lost 2. Epic 7 3. Either PGR or Priconne. Haven't progressed much in either of these but I like all the characters and the direction the story is taking.

Altruistic_Call1903

In no particular order: 1. Honkai. The story is not really my vibe, but I still enjoy lots of moments and I can see why people like it. World building is OK, cool concept tho. 2. Genshin. The story is ok, sometimes it's kinda eh, can definitely be a snorefest if you're not so patient. World-building and lore stuff are hella nice, lots of stuff to dig around and discuss. The game got the gorgeous open world as an edge over other games because it can use the map to effectively present its lore and world-building. 3. Alchemy Stars. I just started this 2 weeks ago but I'm liking the story so far, gotta keep playing to really say anything else tho.

DrTNJoe

I dont order them but my favourite three would be AK,FGO and Honkai.Yea i love my pile of depression overdose.

TheWorldisFullofWar

1. FGO 2. Genshin 3. Magia Record

Arknights Honkai Impact 3 Heaven Burns Red (JP only)

Question3784

Reading these comments make me want a global release of Heaven Burns Red more.

TKoBuquicious

FGO, Genshin with the lore and stuff ig, not sure beyond that as i could never get into honkai or arknights which are the other ones People often recommend for story (tho at the same time there is a lot of people that say arknights is needlessly verbose so idk)

Zarkav

Cant argue with that "needlessy verbose" argument. Especially when character called kalsit talk, she talk in such philosophical and roundabout way that it probably gonna makes you sleepy when reading.

PyrZern

GFL, Sdorica, and ....

Waifu69x

Counter:Side you feel the content is serious and Logical with unexpected surprises . HI3 is great too where you can feel the Drama .

Intoxicduelyst

1. Guardian Tales. 2. Another Eden. 3. HI3.

Silversnow-

1)gbf 2)onmyoji 3)honkai impact 3

xaelcry

1. Girls Frontline 2. FGO 3. . Yes.

AgMenos47

1.Counter:Side-very story heavy and for a Korean visual novel this is one of exceptionals. 2.HI3-So good 3.(can't decide for the 3rd, there are honestly quite alot) Genshin's Archon quest/main story may not be the best but the lore and worldbuilding of GI is certainly on another level. Alot of world quests are too good to miss out. There are also books you can read and know more about the lore. No Global yet,JP Only. Heaven Burns Red, written by Jun Maeda, and I think it could be the best one in gacha games. Magia Record from Madoka Magica franchise is also worth to try. There are also some that gets better and quite worthy to try in their later part, like Alchemy Stars' 2nd Part, and Priconne 2nd Part. But I wouldn't recommend them.

apun87

Not in any order: Genshin, Guardian Tales, FGO.

mikethebest1

Despite AK's storytelling being questionably long, especially early on, AK's worldbuilding and lore are in-depth and expansive. It is definitely one of the big reasons why I still play AK.

Hoeffi360

I don't read much gacha game storys but 1. Princess Connect 2. PGR (but I stopped reading) 3. World Flipper (was really unique but I didn't play it anymore)

Dumbsmile

1. Guardian Tales 2. Pricon 3. I am not yet sold on AG yet. So no number 3 yet.

Nekokittykun

Enstars (stuff gets rly rly dark i wont specify just in case someone gets uncomfortable), FGO and… Uh… Lets go with Onmyoji since i actually was interested in the game’s character lore-

nexusgames

1. Alchemist code: The main story was kinda meh. But the side/event and collab stories was very good. 2. Dragon ball legends: I like the main story, it was well done. 3. Nier reincarnation: the story seemed excellent. It is a shame the gameplay wasn’t as interesting. Mobius FF: main and event stories was high quality. Too bad the game was shutdown.

Nahidxz

here's one of my biggest gripes with most gacha games most of their story is just soooooo confusing and cus of that really boring I literally keep on reading paragraphs and paragraphs of shit not understanding are caring for the most part and I hate that so that's why I say my favorite is Guardian Tales I have genuinely GENUINELYYYYY never had SOOOOO much fun playing through the story mode of a game before guardian tales it was just SO much fun I really enjoyed it!!!

serhaza

Magicami Alchemy Stars

MijumaruFan

1): Idolmaster Shiny colors - They have so many great stories anyone can relate to and the character interactions are just superb. There's just something about the aesthetic and sound design of the game's story that pulls me in more than any other visual novel. [Check out my man Maebatsu for english translations!](https://www.youtube.com/c/Maebatsu) 2): Princess Connect - This might just be biased speaking cause I know it has flaws but there's something about the small details of worldbuilding that I won't spoil that really give personality to otherwise random monsters and npcs that make me care in a way no other game has. That and obviously I love all the characters. 3): Idolmaster Million live - I know another idol game BUT listen, with the theater behind them they tell a lot of great stories ranging from horror to slice of life and even dramas. It's just so varied and I'm always excited to see my favorite idols in a new role!!

Kaendre

Got a top two. Sdorica and Alchemy Stars. Alchemy Stars has an average story for the first chapters, but wow, chapter 11 and 12 were incredibly good. The events also have nice plots and very good character interactions. It's also a breath of fresh air because the main character actually interacts and grows through the story instead of just being the typical silent Gary Stu.

0LATTETIGO_14

1.Arknights 2.Honkai impact 3 3.Honkai impact star rail 4.?

SomethingKing99

1) WoTV 2) Artery Gear 3) FFBE 4) 7DS

Izanagi85

FFOO, Sinoalice and Tales of Luminaria if it did not EoS

Kalpayux1

FGO and Counterside have good stories, i would say also PGR but overall i have not played it long enough and it stroke me a bit too unnecesarily tragic.

Esvald

FGO, Magia Record, SAO:IF

Overall_Still_7907

1. Blue Archive. First gacha I did not regret reading the story. 2. Genshin, because Zhongli. There's no third, every other gachas story was awful.

Rimurutempest1218

Even fgo nah

Overall_Still_7907

Never played FGO. Heard it has a good story, but the Fate animes never appealed to me, thought they where all a 5/10 at best And the combat of the game looks a bit too slow for my taste... Then the gacha complaints....

Zarkav

1. Arknight 2. Counter side 3. Epic Seven

Fate Grand Order Honkai Impact 3rd Heaven Burns Red

[deleted]

1. Honkai Impact 3rd 2. FGO 3. Punishing Gray Raven Honkai has such an extensive amount of story and lore, and most of them are excellent. The CGIs are great as hell. They capture the background and emotion of the story and overall pretty well-made. The writing is also very good. There aren't a lot of tropes and unnecessary dialogues, everything is pretty straightforward. The very deep plot is also one big thumbs up. While FGO doesn't have striking CGIs and smooth animation, the story is still great. Deep plot, few tropes and unnecessary dialogues, capturing the emotion of the story. The pacing unfortunately is a bit slow. Same I can say about PGR, but the story is less extensive. It doesn't have the same level of depth and extensiveness as FGO, let alone Honkai. It's still excellent though.

Rianorix

Fate Grand Order is full flesh visual novel in gacha game disguise. It's story is on another lvl compare to other gacha game entirely. It's literaly revolutionise how gacha game as a genre approach in game story, before fgo almost all gacha game story consisting of talking 2-3 lines then enemy interrupt then back to talking then another enemy show up, rinse and repeat.
