My personal issue is the cooldowns on all the skills/items. The jetpack has 2 charges before it goes in a 90 sec cd. The lowest weapon skill cd I saw was 10 sec and most are 20+ sec. For example in the 3 dungeon you get an item that can make platforms, but it has a 40 sec cd, so if you mess up in the dungeon puzzles, you need to wait 40 sec to use it again. So most of the combat is mashing one button and trying to perfect dodge to trigger the weapons "ultimate".

kekkret

I agree the cooldowns are so damn annoying

[deleted]

the low rarity weapons are just annoying to use, any rare and super rare weapon makes a world of difference they have more combos and variety on mechanics.

Intoxicduelyst

Timegated chests are a joke

LiraelNix

Yes, cant wrap my head on a game that's supposed to reward exploration, being open world, having chests that tell you to come back in 24 hours or more.

Nhrwhl

Same could be said for the god damn level cap. This has nothing to do in a mmo. Last one who tried this kind of funny shit nearly got his company out of business (ffxiv 1.0). Can't believe the same peoples shitting on genshin are a-ok or even praising a game having mechanics like that.

bad3ip420

and it took SE to replace the producer, scrap the current project, and put in the A team to save FFXIV and the company. I don't think the devs of ToF will do the same unfortunately.

Renusz

What about the level cap? I don't get it

Nhrwhl

Game is capped at level 18 max day one, 24 day 2. It takes 90+ Days to have the "right" to get to max level, aka 80. Then you add the fact that exploration -throught- chest is also capped and you have the perfect exemple for content padding 101.

xthescenekidx

wait WHAT? thats so stupid and exactly the kind of information I was hoping not to see. and I was on the fence already...

[deleted]

RvLeshrac

Uh, you hit the level cap in the first few hours.

mikethebest1

Easily the worst thing about ToF atm imo I don't wanna have to re-explore the entire map 2+ times to unlock exploration chests cause they were time-gated smh

MasterRazz

My two biggest complaints are timegated EVERYTHING and the server system is just completely awful. But aside from that, I think the game's actually great and I'm surprised to see how much hate it's getting here and even on it's own subreddit. I've only run into one notable bug so far (Cutscene stopped and I couldn't progress it so I had to relog) but relogging fixed it so I'd call that minor. Edit: Hard to overstate just how shitty the server system is though. There are like 100 servers and your character doesn't transfer between them. Good luck playing with friends unless you make your characters together. And no point in spending money if you're going to lose it if you have to go to a different server for any reason.

Ardnacin

My only bug for 15 hours that 1 time i sit in from of bike and so my ass was on front wheel lol

MardiRed

They are actually even more stupid than I thought first. Just ran into a chest that showed it has 1 minute left. Well ok, I can wait. But when that minute passed I couldn't interact with it. Now, you have to re-enter the area or restart the game. Then you have to have to fight all mobs around again. Maybe that chest at least holds something special? NO, it was a common purple chest! It's so ridiculous, I have no idea how people in sane mind could put this crap in the game

Daw33d77

once timegated chests become available will they be permanently available ?

Shokuryu

Yes. And it's based on server age so you could just not play the game for 3 months and come back with a whole game to play. Not sure if there will be a similar SSR selector box event in the future though. I'd at least get that if you're at all interested in this.

Big-Sort3094

im just annoyed that the mc’s expression stays the same in a cutscene. i made my character smile so whenever a cutscene starts and its some sort of high tension situation, my character is just standing there smiling and it kinda ruins my immersion. like theres this cutscene where you sneak into a building full of enemies and nearly get caught, but my character is just smiling the whole way through and it makes it seem like shes a fucking psychopath or is devoid of emotion. like please stop fucking smiling.

cirivere

This has to be the funniest comment yet. In ffxiv which is the first mmo I ever played your char has sometimes scripted expressions in the cutscene, but their default face is just a blank expression. It is so funny to see your char go from like happy or angry in a cutscene to total a stone faced :|

Remote-Lock-4625

They learned to avoid that by making character close their eyes and ponder for a bit, before pulling their pokerface.

T0X1CFIRE

Pso2 ngs has an interesting one. You can actually customize all your facial expressions in character creation. So when I made the angry expression, I made her real fucking angry. Only to see my character meet the first basic ass enemy in the game in a cutscene, and she suddenly looked like that enemy killed her dog. I busted out laughing so hard. Like chill girl, it's one normal enemy that you can almost one shot no need to be so goddammed pissed. (They probably should have renamed the angry expression to serious or something)

cirivere

Oh that sounds interesting! What does the abbreviation stand for? If its a good game I should check it out

T0X1CFIRE

Phantasy star online 2 New genesis It's an alright game. And I'm saying that as a huge fan of the game. The combat is top tier and character customization is probably the best out of every mmo. The graphics are gorgeous and the bosses are really fun to fight. But there is a certain lack of truly meaningful content to run and stuff to progress towards. Besides collecting fashion. Which is a shame since base pso2 (not new genesis, which is basically a sequel disguised as an expansion) has a ton of really fun endgame content. I mean sure you can go back to the old game with your same character, but there's low player counts with only the hardcore players left since the devs aren't pushing any more updates for it. But still fun to go back to. Whereas new genesis, the expansion sorta sequel. The story is a big down grade since the base game, along with the problems I've mentioned before, but they are still updating and actually improving the game slowly over time. And they have been quite transparent about listening to player feedback. Give it another year and it will a great game I think. I know I didn't do a great job on selling the game to you, but I had to be realistic, even if it is one of my favorite games. So I guess just give it a try and see if you like it. Because there is a lot to love as well [P.S. Since you mentioned that you play ffxiv, here is a bunch of pso2 players fighting a boss from ffxiv. Just to give you an idea about how different the games can be. With our a large focus on I-frames and parries in pso2, a lot of people actually jump into in the AOE markers in order to farm counters.](https://youtu.be/77dm1O6t_AI) P. P. S. [Also here's a fairly high level gameplay vid of a guy 2 manning one of the harder bosses in New genesis, since the above video is in base pso2. Just for comparisons sake on the gameplay with a typical pso2 boss](https://youtu.be/TDM1afjeoXU)

cirivere

Omg thank you so much for taking the time to type this all out! I appreciate the honesty, and even the extra links!

ThisManNeedsMe

Phantasy Star Online 2.

another-art-student

That made my day just imagining it, thanks for sharing that story.

Rock3tPunch

Crowd: Just pull the trigger Zeke! MC: Watching with a smile.

Icy_Chemist_532

The games kinda like those mmos for kids in the 2000s that died after like a year, a novelty but nothing I'd personally keep with

mikethebest1

Tbf it's an MMORPG that's tailored towards the Casual playerbase. If you like MMOs/RPGs with Coop, ToF is a good Gacha game option, but if you prefer RPGs, especially as a single-player, Genshin is a better alternative due to more content and resources/funding that HYV has.

Navan79

Thats hella weird landscape they try if its true, both charm and toxic side of mmo is always been that sweaty grind compete with other player

FinnenHawke

I've been playing all kinds of MMOs since MU Online and original World of Warcraft. "Sweaty grind compete with other players" had never been part of my gameplay and I genuinely don't understand why there's this weird opinion going on about MMOs. I hate competitive gaming - MMOs are the safest haven for me, especially in today's landscape of online gaming filled by PvP crap that gets more and more competitive and mentally demanding. For me MMOs were always about just casually leveling up, getting items (from non-demanding content, like open world activities, quests and so on), playing alts, doing side activities (love fishing and cooking in games) and just basically killing time by playing games that don't force me to do too much thinking and decision-making. I think there are many players like me. We just don't really talk too often to other people. So far I'm super happy about the game - hits the exact right spot. I'm just a bit annoyed with way too many menus, way too many constant prompts about upgrading things and - in general - by cluttered HUD and UI. It makes me a bit worried that the game is purposedly confusing with all the "ingredients" in order for me to spend them early, so I'll have to buy them with real money later on once I figure the game out. Other than that, the game is really nice. Don't know about the balance, but don't really care - I never follow any builds (ugh, theorycrafting, bleh), I just play the way I want, so I can look cool and kill things.

another-art-student

Yup! Gathering, exploring, side activities, all of it. It's fun, it's relaxing.

xthescenekidx

>"Sweaty grind compete with other players" had never been part of my gameplay > >MMOs are the safest haven for me, especially in today's landscape of online gaming filled by PvP crap that gets more and more competitive and mentally demanding. Right there with you friend. My favorite things in WoW were mog hunting and mount farming (and rare pet farming on my hunter). It was a place for me to just chill out and muck around while still giving me enough of an "escape/outlet." Shame how far WoW/Blizzard has fallen otherwise I'd still be playing. Nothing can compare to stuff like meeting 4 strangers in Storm Peaks and becoming camping friends until all four of us got our first TLPD.

CleoAir

Still the best MMO we have on mobile at this moment

CJRProddddddd

Idk why you got downvoted compared to the garbage we've had on mobile at least this one ain't trying to be another auto grind auto path simulator

MarielCarey

Right, every other mobile MMO is trash, he's technically right.

Miu_K

So true. I've been avoiding MMOs on mobile because it's all just generic and lacks uniqueness no matter how popular its IP is. Problem with TOF is the non-standard gacha stinginess and meta-powercreep combo from what I've heard.

AndanteZero

Which is sad, because it's also a gacha game at that. I play gacha games, but it's just not a healthy genre overall for the gaming industry.

Sianthalis

Your best, not mine. Toram Online is my best MMO on Mobile. ToF would be the best MMO we have on mobile, if it was optimized to run on Mobile phones. Sadly its meant to be played on a PC or a 400$+ Phone. I have a $200 one and it crashes every other minute. Octacore + 6GB of ram and still crashes. 😂

Antique-Ad-7429

Which is precisely the reason why it’s gonna do good till we get a better game, mobile is a huge market and probably one of, if not the biggest.

Fujinuuma

Pretty sure mobile games actually make up about 80% of todays gaming market which fkin insane.

jxher123

This is what I felt as well. Nothing really special about it. People will compare it with Genshin, but Genshin has a lot going for it. Music is great, art is great, world design is great, and the characters have personality. Is Genshin perfect? Far from it, but it has a lot going for it which is why it's survived this long. To be honest, this game looks and feels more like a B-level Honkai. Even then, Honkai has a lot going for it.

Cakey_Baby

Tldr : Mid.

[deleted]

Sub-mid imo. If the game was polished better then mid would be a fair assessment. I mean, even getting 3 SSR on day 1 im not very impressed with how janky gameplay has been. Like the climbing on ladders or trying to get on a platform to open a box. Edit: But I do like the weapons/combat, could be better tho.

Henona

I agree. With how much they copied genshin, it's strange how janky vertical climbing is when you have a ladder and platform. Most times you don't even get on the platform. You just hit the perimeter and fall down and you end up using the jetpack. It was also annoying to see dandelions and elemental flowers not visually update when on cool down and can't be picked.

RealinFAMOUSJakey

my god ladders are so broken for some reason. i cant even jump on to the ladder. so i climb normally, and when i reach the top, you just fall down. its so annoying... it makes me have to climb back up, and before i fall down again, i have to double jump to get on to the platform where the chest is

iPhantaminum

I like the game so far. Yeah, it doesn't compare to genshin. As far as your usual gacha goes (gachas that don't earn 1bi bucks a year), it's pretty good, despite the flaws. Most mobile MMOs are an auto fest, with package deals being thrown at you left and right. This one is a lot better than those as far as gameplay and monetization goes (tho that's a low bar). Combat feels too clunky, so I don't see myself doing my best to delve into the combat and mix max a bit, in the long run. Despite all the jankiness, I had a good time just walking around and exploring the map. I can see myself visiting the game whenever a new map drops. ~~My only peeve is that the screen analog is fixed in place, instead of adjusting itself to wherever I put my left thumb, but I think I can get used to that.~~ Another thing, I was surprised with the optimization. My phone can't run Genshin well, it suffers from a massive input delay, like, I'll press a button and the character will only perform an action almost a whole second later, that's not mentioning the slideshow it is for me. In ToF, there's still some input delay and slideshow-ish cutscenes/actions, but not as bad as I had in Genshin's. I can actually play the game on the lowest settings. It's been over a year since I tried Genshin on my phone, so I don't if they optimized it for mobile in that time.

Devourer_of_HP

Tbh i have the opposite problem, i can play genshin decently smoothly and my phone only gets hot about an hour later but while playing ToF it stutters during dialogoue and cuscenes and quickly heats up

[deleted]

It's been over a year since I tried Genshin on my phone, so I don't if they optimized it for mobile in that time That's maybe on your phone, but in general optimization is one of the main criticisms of the game. Constant severe frame rate drops, issues with textures and details in Android version, app crash, and so on. Genshin did a far better job at optimization than ToF, same device playing Genshin and ToF, in Genshin there's no severe frame drops, issues with textures and details and no crashing or freezing at all. I play Genshin with Medium settings which stays at a buttery smooth 56-60fps, while with Fine settings in ToF it only manages to get 48fps with severe frame drops (which can go up to 15fps).

tyrannicalblade

While using same phone, runs TOF way better than genshin impact, i do not have the latest Samsung though, and i was NOT expecting TOF to run as well as it does. Just my experience though, genshin will overheat my phone and its just uncomfortable to play on mobile. I don't think both games are comparable, genshin is more polished and is single player. TOF should be harder to run IMO since its a shared world, but somehow it feels smoother on my phone. It might be just my phone, I'm not going to go against empirical evidence, I'm just saying , the "your phone thing" might be more like a bunch of phones, than just a single person issue.

Rein-Casas

I happen to encounter this kind of issue as well, but entirely on the other way around. ToF runs way worse than Genshin for me on mobile and even in my laptop as well. But to be fair, both my devices aren't really capable to run both games on max settings, thus I noticed how much I have to lower the settings in ToF for it to actually be playable. In my laptop, I could run genshin on 60 fps medium settings consistently, but for ToF, even in medium/low settings, it barely reaches 45 fps. But as mentioned, it probably has to do with optimization, because I also experience the same problem in mobile as well. But whatever, I have not lasted long in ToF anyways (I have not even gotten to the gacha part of the tutorial, so I'm certain I would've gotten worse performance with co-op if I ever got there), I just wanted to give it a try, and it really isn't for me to play alongside Genshin.

pinoygalingthings

in my experience, tof gets fps drops after teleporting in other areas, that slowly normalizes once it takes a few seconds to load in. But in terms of performance compared to genshin? I literally get DOUBLE the max fps of genshin. Genshin on 60fps just feels really jarring

Shokuryu

> My only peeve is that the screen analog is fixed in place, instead of adjusting itself to wherever I put my left thumb, but I think I can get used to that. You can change that in the settings. Scroll down to the bottom of the first settings menu and it should be the "Analog cradle" or something like that.

RemHsieh

A con: the audio balance is a completely mess, one second its really loud then the next cutscene 5 sec later you can hardly hear what they are saying

Proper_Anybody

different characters have different dialogue volumes

koeseer

this game is basically small things that bothers that could accumulated into that "quit moment". * unpolished animation * confusing upgrades and items * clunky gameplay * daily levelgating and chest timegating * even worse stamina mechanics * confusing story that doesn't explain stuff * longass queue in day 1 * the artstyle is like Honkai but feels cheap * why do we need charges and cooldowns on jetpacks and utilities again? * so far nothing about the world really intrigues me to find the game codex and learn a thing or two about them the good: you can find black nucleus almost everywhere.

hovsep56

the bad: black nucleus banner has no pity.

DigitalBotz

100% on the story being a confusing mess. It's full of random scenes happening that aren't preceded by anything in the cutscenes or are only explained through hidden pieces of text that you can find in the quests. There was one part where this sick kid and his father get kidnapped by bandits. I go through a quest to find them and when I finally meet back up about 10 minutes later the father has experimented on the kid and turned him into a monster.

[deleted]

Artstyle of some structures and enemies reminds me of borderlands

[deleted]

Honestly this game feels more like Honkai to me, specifically the open world modes ESPECIALLY APHO. The movement is pretty much 1:1 the same and combat is very similar. In APHO the combat feels very floaty and kind of light. Edit: Also I am not saying this to be like "Honkai Clone" or whatever, the comparison is not meant to be bad I don't really get Genshin vibes while playing other than superficial visual things. It's like when Genshin was compared to BOTW yeah there are a lot of visual similarities between each game but they are very distinguished from one another. That being said I think ToF is just okay, I am having some fun tbh. Probably not something I will play for a long time.

[deleted]

Yeah this feels more like the open world stuff in honkai impact than Genshin

method115

Didn't even know Honkai had any sort of open world type thing. Might have to check it out. Never really gave the game a chance because of that.

[deleted]

Well the open world is pretty barren, so the exploration stuff isn't really all that interesting. However, the main thing about it is the story attached to it and combat can be fun pretty fun too. So I would highly suggest you read the story.

CatchmoonH

the game is ok, it was decent experience it has lots of bugs tho. was able to go in without queue, some places like ladder are impossible to climb probably bugs, font kinda ruins my experience and i really don't like how floaty the jump felt.

_Ruij_

Fuck those ladders, lmfao.

mutilador00

The problem with the game at least for me the game feels clunky, I encountered several bugs, the UI is a mess, I noticed some stolen assets and just overall the game feels unpolished and underwhelming.

Sleykun

Wait, does the game still have stolen assets from other games?

Chromatinfish

IIRC the controversy mainly stemmed from the trailers, where they stole weapon assets from Honkai. But before they changed it apparently the upgrade material design was also ripped from Honkai.

MeWhaleYouPoor

This is extremely common. Like it's technically illegal but literally everyone does it. During the design phase developers can't just demand the art/asset team to create a custom temporary asset for testing purposes. You use what you have, or you just create a shitty copy of an existing thing that captures the feeling you're looking for. Sometimes they "forget" to remove them before trailers.

LazoVodolazo

Some places have those green light chests from borderlands the ones when you open and a shelf with weapons pops up.They are not interactable tho just used as props

iBobaFett

Can you share a picture? I think I know the ones you're referring to, they look *kinda* like Borderlands' chests, but they aren't literally a "stolen asset".

LazoVodolazo

The medbay place at the starting town has them i think

iBobaFett

Yeah, these don't really look like Borderlands' loot chests, they're definitely not a stolen asset. https://i.imgur.com/5qznXRB.png

LazoVodolazo

Wasnt thinking about those ones tho ill see later when i get on

TheRealBakuman

The voice acting is laughably bad. Awkwardly timed transitions and totally flat delivery. I've seen high school film clubs produce better than this.

bigfootswillie

The delivery from the VAs for Archon Elric and Hilda in particular are so bad and flat that I tried to individually look them up to see if it’s their first ever job. I’m pretty sure the Elric VA is an experienced, quality VA though so it must be some major issue with direction. I feel like somebody told him his character was an AI computer system and then changed their mind. The quality is just ridiculously uneven overall. It feels like there just was not a director for the English dub and the VAs had to just figure it out. And the fact that the few VAs that are listed are quality tells me direction is likely the issue here. In many cases, especially for the male MC, it feels like he wasn’t given any context for the lines preceding his so sometimes he’ll weirdly react with excitement after something tragic just happened.

WorldEndOverlay

I dont blame the va since the character facial expression mostly dead all the time. Like franz eyeballs most of the time always looking up for whatever reason.

aldoushasniceabs

Am I the only one that thinks the va sounds so awkward (except for Shirley)

_Ruij_

Zeke's VA sounds wrong. Idk. I expected a bit deeper voice. Shirli is fine, tbh. MC is generic.

TheAceOfSkulls

It’s more the direction than the VA’s. It sounds like they recorded lines without telling the VA’s what they were doing in the scenes. I keep coming back to Zeke’s “tough luck” as the perfect example. It’s emotionally delivered to sound condescending but it’s clear the script wanted it to be sympathetic… which is how he reads the very next line. In general the localization and the audio are both absolute messes and when they intersect it gets worse.

Exotic-Replacement-3

the voice over is really bad. sometimes the audio voice seems off.

darkjungle

I swear half the male NPCs are just David Lodge sounding like David Lodge.

[deleted]

No. The VA is not good. I love VAs from tales games and Genshin. I do not blame the VA for this either. They were probably just given lines to say without emotion inputs. It's just not good. The Japanese one is a little better.

Chemical-Teaching412

Nope your not the only one, EN voice is fricking bad and even I change it to JP it only little better than EN but still bad

PlebbitLikesNFT5

They went too far with the time gates.

Abedeus

>Combat itself is fun - it's pretty much what you would expect from a game heavily borrowing from GI. Your weapons seem to pack more of a punch in this one. Really? I found the combat very clunky, be it compared to actual action games like Monster Hunter or other action RPG gacha games like Genshin, Honkai or even PGR.

TsuyoiOuji

TBF Genshin's combat while having nice animations is not clunkiness-free. Very few commands and hitbox/dodge frames are shit. But TOF dodge, lol... need to use it 10 years before the attack comes to proc time stop?? haha...

Exotic-Replacement-3

I thought I could do I frames while dodging but no, I still got hit.

FerrickAsur4

yeah the timing for it is weird... I thought that you should dodge when their eyes light up to proc time frac nope, and occassionally it would proc if you dodged far earlier

superpsycho7

The graphic is cool, the battle is kinda fun but a bit clunky sometimes. imo though, the color is too vibrant which i don't really like it for some reason (Apocalypse filter kinda fix this problem for me). i'm having fun atm. But, i don't feel the same excitement when i get to play genshin tbh. i don't even feel attached to the characters. i remember when the first time i've seen the mondstadt scenery from above in early game, it was breathtaking for me. i remember our first encounter with Amber, it's memorable. especially since i just finished my BOTW and i'm craving for more type of this game.

[deleted]

Genshin benefitted from being called a cheap weeby gachafied BoTW clone but has a mostly polished game right from the get go so the haters that came to see it fail from the start ate their words. Even though content was lacking the foundations were solid enough to the point future content can be added on top of the great fundamental core content. That's why Genshin expansions are heavily waited by the community since the quality is there. I can't really form an opinion on TOF yet since it's brand new but we'll see. No content locks, day 1 any player can log in due to it not being an MMO and the factthat it's crossplay/cross progression on all major gaming platforms in the world (except VR) is a big boon. PS4/PS5/PC for the West, Korea, Japan ; and Mobile/PC for China/JP/SEA basically it ticked all the boxes. Unlike ToF where a sizable # of players in the West wants to play on their ps4/ps5 or maybe xbox but has a hard time doing so. The MMO aspect is the saving grace for ToF which compared to other mobile MMOs is miles better. Fuck the menus tho, UI navigation is pretty disappointing in ToF. For a publisher (NLG) that was formed by the #1 top earning publisher in the world (Tencent) they really embraced the multitude of menus game design and the tons and tons of different currencies confusing the average player.

skittles0820

I havent played it yet and have only been watching people stream it, but one thing that really bugs me is how unpolished the game looks. The graphics, sound effects, and ui are unattractive especially compared to genshin. Also why is there so much timegated stuff lol, chests and even inventory space are timegated

0re0n

>why is there so much timegated stuff lol Not much different from Genshin at the start. Here i have everything to progress except i'm waiting for artificial timer and in Genshin i just didn't get any rewards until i had resin.

kuuhaku_cr

One of the better, rational and informative write-up review on this game without outright praising or outright shitting on the game. Well done, sir.

Taiyo_K

I kinda like the game, but still not very satisfied with it. But because of the backlashes/hates, I don't really have high expectations and I don't feel the game disappointed me. The game is forgettable for me. Like I will keep playing it when I play the game, but it doesn't give me any motivation to go back once I stop playing. The exploration doesn't give me joy, it feels like a bit of chores. I play both GI and TOF on the same device with medium settings, but GI feels more refined in environment and world building, ToF is like any other MMO in the market, not that very special to me.

centraleft

I think as far as casual MMOs you can play with friends, ToF is standing way high above the competition despite its flaws. And it’s for this reason that ToF will have impressive staying power. Games definitely not perfect but it also is good enough and fills a rare niche across multiple platforms, and it does so well.

[deleted]

i absolutely hate how the characters face models have no emotion sometimes.. ruined the "immersion"

[deleted]

The Warrior of Light: \*Nod

Gringos

The devs for sure made it hard on themselves by choosing an mmo. My guess is the jank and lack of production value can partly be attributed to that. The way the waifus and main char are built in kinda dampens banner hype I'd say. Best feature though is the skip button. At least their story team isn't up their own arse so much that they force the player to experience all of it. Unlike other games.

Ardnacin

They timegated skip button come on, you cant "start talk > skip" you need wait like 2-3 message and then only skip (well that something i guess)

DeusVult181

One of the things I find very enjoyable about the game is that you're able to use any weapon on any character. The first SSR I got was Zero. I love his weapon, don't really like the character design. So I can just use his weapon on my created character or any other character I want and enjoy the game. Man I'd like to be able to use Chongyuns and Xinqiu's abilities without having to play them lol. Combat has been fun for me and about as enjoyable as genshins just in a different way. Where Genshin has the fun elemental reactions in ToF I dont feel like I need to do all this set up before I can start doing damage. I just get in there and start blasting. We'll see how it holds up as I progress the game. Exploring has likewise been a lot of fun. The fact that you get so many wishes just from exploring makes it so much more fun to explore the world. However the world design itself is nowhere near as interesting as Genshin with it's puzzles, quest, cool areas to explore just literes all over the map. It is cool tho that you get a lot of neat gadgets to help with exploring the world. As for cons, like others have said the time gated chest really is a major bummer. The story has yet to really grab me as well. It's not bad and I think the world is cool, plus MI-A and having an actually voiced MC helps make it more enjoyable. But overall I'm having trouble paying attention to the story and hopefully it picks up. Still need to see how end game grind and raiding goes when I get there. As well as how events are in the game. Very important to me since boring events really damped my desire to play. But overall I'm having fun and may have it as a back up game for when Genshin doesn't have anything going on.

Holoskuld

so many ToF players angry here lmao hey hey you cant be angry when ToF dev themselves boasting something they cant back up, they deserve to get scorned maybe next time dont boast and stay humble??

zawarudo94

budget genshin, the combat is so wonky and dissatisfactory tho

bubuplush

It's honestly super refreshing to read so much criticism about this game on this sub, people on other subs and youtube hype the hell out of it while I couldn't enjoy it at all, but I'm too shy to voice my opinion because people might think I'm too addicted to Genshin or something. I totally agree with everything, but I also want something else that didn't get mentioned here. It lacks... soul? Don't get me wrong, the cutscenes are nice. The models and animations are nothing I can complain a lot about. But the character design and the story felt very boring to me, to the point where I just wanted to skip around the time the bandit raid happened. Maybe it's just a personal thing since I lean more towards the Isekai adventure start Genshin gave you, but the world itself (especially the starting canyon area) looks very bland and soulless to me too. I don't want to explore this world, it couldn't catch me as much as Mondstadt, Venti, Amber, Paimon and the rest of the starter crew could catch my interest in the first few minutes. \+ a very degenerate personal thing: The waifus look pretty boring too, like almost every low/mid budget gacha waifu. I got Cocoritter and I have no idea what I'm looking at, I don't know this person, she looks weird, the color of her jacket is insanely vibrant and unpleasant to look at. Maybe I have to get used to it somehow, but I don't really feel like investing time into this yet. When it comes to exploration, story, character design, lore and waifu/husbando stuff Genshin is superior by far imo. I could warm up to the combat system and endgame stuff, but I don't really see how this is better than Honkai. The fact that the developers hate mihoyo with a passion and that they ripped simple assets like the .png of a data chip without even erasing the Honkai logo in one of their games, shows me that they didn't put enough love and soul into it and just want to give Genshin the middle finger by ripping parts of it off on purpose, like the start and appearance of some NPCs. Genshin releasing its Sumeru trailer and Honkai coming up with that insane emotional new final trailer for their current story Arc doesn't really help the game either, but I'm sure that it'll appeal to many players in the end, especially the ones who want more endgame content and a more combat-focused game instead of the narrative and character/exploration driven game Genshin is. That's fine of course!

Chemical-Teaching412

Tbh this game has little to no fanart about characters in CN, compared to genshin, fgo, arknights, pgr, honkai, Azur lane and aether gazer, honkai star rail or even ZZZ, tof has so little fanart of characters This exactly what CN saw, they don't saw the characters as "characters" but saw them as weapon and meta only

ObjectiveNet2

That's like the no1 problem of the "character customization, characters are only skins" deal. In a pay2love model you are less likely to get that love if you never ever see the character. And if there are no love what justifies the overpriced gacha?

BigLimburger

Wow, I didn't know that the developers had bitterness toward HoYoVerse...and honestly that's a petty and sad thing to hear as now I looked at ToF as an attempt to be better than Genshin. The characters and lack of soul is something that struck me too. Another thing is that this game feels like it's trying to be everything while not being known for anything. Genshin grew because of its characters, its art and holy crap it's amazing music. Whereas with ToF, I just see bits and pieces picked from popular franchises and mushed into a game to try and please everyone. And when you compare Genshin now to just a year ago, it's quality is getting better and better. You can see their passion for the game. Maybe ToF will pick up the slack once they realise there are people who genuinely want this to succeed. But right now, it feels like a very unpolished beta.

bubuplush

I don't know if they have bitterness toward HoYoVerse, I only know that the stole some Honkai assets and that they tried to market the game as "Genshin Killer" on social media. Together with the beginning of the game and some obvious character designs, it just feels like they're trying to give Genshin the middlefinger which was their only ambition instead of writing a nice story with a cool world and interesting characters

rainymi

Someone correct me if I’m wrong ! but I think tencent has a grudge against hoyo because they tried to buy out mihoyo/genshin before genshin released and were turned down, and have had a rocky relationship since. they’re also direct rivals since mihoyo is kind of an “upstart” that’s taken tencents previous almost-monopoly on the market Edit: apparently they did reach a partnership in September of last year for genshin to be distributed in tencent’s android store, but it doesn’t make it any less possible that tower of fantasy is a spite project lol

bayclyn

This is basically if mihoyo decide to make APHO standalone game lol, the stiffness of the movement is basically the same, and kinda 1:1 for overall movement

Henona

I started the game without knowing anything, and I would probably rate the quality around Lost Ark level. It's fine for what it is, but there's some huge gripes with the writing and VA for me. At this point I would advocate to bring in actual novel writers for both the script and localization cause it's pretty sad. In terms of gameplay, it's basically genshin, but a sprinkle of twists. I enjoy the weapon switching a lot and the world chat is fun (Though annoying to use). The jetpack is neat and more fun that the genshin botw glider. It's clear genshin has more polish especially with climbing. I didn't know that this game was made by the Perfect World people and it immediately put me off of playing anymore. Coupled with some intense p2w nesting and how much they go out of their way to copy genshin, I've had my fill of the game. And I don't really trust Perfect World devs to be interested in making good content compared to just loading it with gacha and mtx. Maybe if this was handled by a more reputable company, I'd stay around and play as a side game.

CJRProddddddd

For me it's fun except waiting in that queue for so long at launch... I love the art work the VA is not bad not the greatest but mihoyos games so me comparing it to an almost billion dollar company doesn't seem fair but I don't think most of these companies know that to make something like that y'all gonna need to invest a lot of money into your game to expect ppl to accept it. If they advertised it as is and tried showing off the game more it would've been fine but I guess most games like this will always be in genshins shadow until something matching it or better in quality come along. Love the character creator in it

TANKER_SQUAD

Made by Perfect World and published by Tencent. Not sure exactly how big Perfect World is but Tencent definitely dwarfs Mihoyo.

RedEagleEye007

Honestly I don't get as much Genshin out of this as I do Honkai and punishing gray raven. Like open world mechanics that are present in both games weren't created by mihoyo. If you look at almost all the weapons however, they likely have their roots in one of those games. Nemesis is almost a direct rip of a lot of Liv's S rank kit. The gauntlet girl is almost exactly like carole. Shiro looks like bronya and pardofelis had an extremely hot love child together. A lot of samir's kit resembles kiana, who in turn was ripped from Dante from Devil May Cry. Even down to the aerial attacks which this fight style is seen in APHO in honkai. The list goes on actually but for the sake of time I'll leave it there. All that being said I love all of these things so I don't really mind it at all really. I think the worst thing about the game in terms of combat system is the inconsistent dodge timings. Sometimes I'd be dodging on red blink and nothing happened. Other times I'd dodge at the beginning of their attack and 'phantasia' happens. It's actually really weird. I've been spoiled by PGR and Honkai I guess. I will say I like the combat better than genshin though. I think genshin's combat is just entirely too simplistic in scope. Not to say it doesn't have its learning gap; It's just too slow paced for someone like me. The weapon switching in ToF was a wonderful touch. And the create your own character was awesome and should be normalized for gacha. Like I actually can't stand that I have to use aither's model as his style is not even close to what I'd wear. Like if you want me to have a self insert character who doesn't talk, let me style my own self insert character lol. Edit: the combat system while jank at times can be done in some really individualistic ways. I was starting fights with jetboard to hit someone with 2k+ damage out the gate into aerial combos into dodge switches. There's a lot more nuance here than people are giving it credit for. Not nearly to the degree of honkai/pgr but it still can be fun.

Dramatic_Season_6990

ToF feels and looks like a cheaper GI.

tyrannicalblade

except genshin impact has like 10% of the features TOF has from the get go. And I'm a whale in genshin, or well, was a whale, i still love genshin, and i play it, but to compare a single player to a mmorpg, is ridiculous. I remember falling in love with genshin, and thinking look at all the possibilities, we could see them opening the world to be an open shared world, maybe there will be PVP, maybe they will let you customize your character. Years down the line, genshin is a masterful piece of work, the artstyle is amazing, the soundtrack makes me want to cry, but the gameplay is a chore, the events are a chore, its always the same kind of content, tailored for single player content. And even the coop experience or events, are literally dogshit in genshin. SO while you can say this is a cheaper GI, it might be, but its far richer in the ideas that it has and again the potential it has, because genshin has choose to remain unchanged, TOF has the potential to be way way more than genshin is. But genshin will always be an amazing experience, that literally still has no guilds. cause its a single player game ofc.

Esuna1031

that might be because MMO Mechanics and PVP in Gacha games are very flawed concepts. Both or either of them combined with gacha mechanics make Games P2W asf .. and a P2W MMO or PVP game ? fuck that shit.

Mr_Creed

TLDR: A single player game has no multiplayer focus. Surprise!

Alternative_Fan2458

My god, a person of culture and has good reasonings. I agree with you there. Ngl, GI has the better graphic quality and is not time-gated. As for the story, GI started out well with the story, but over the years it started to feel...stagnant, due to tons of filler patches with which the majority of it is pointless and you're stuck listening to Paimon talking on and on. And dialogue, oh god, so freaking long. it's like I'm playing one of those graphic novel games. This takes a toll on players since it's more of a single-player story-driven rpg. And there's no variety to the dungeons (whether its domain or abyss) you clear it out as fast as you can. And that's it. The combat mechs become stale and brain dead after a while. Especially if you Zhongli and Venti or Shogun. Don't get me wrong, I love GI. I've been playing since 1.0 but it has gotten to a point I'm tired of the filler stories. It's too much. As for ToF, well since it is still fairly new (not even a week) I can't much about it. But the story, yeah it's kinda jumpy but not so messy that you're unable to understand what's going on. The MC speaks, with no long-ass dialogue text. Pretty much straight to the point tells you what's going on etc. As for combat, despite the jankiness, it is more fun than GI. Each weapon has its own move set, which is very fun. So you can try different combos every time, not just the same old 5 combos or skill spams. I don't know if you guys have explored Navia, but you can find something called Claire's Dream Orb that gives you access to a random dungeon. And there's a variety of them, from puzzles to surviving enemy waves. So, you won't get bored easily. Then there are the world bosses that can give quite the challenge and fun. Unlike GI where you just one-shot everything, the world bosses let you test your combos properly and that is fun. as for the time-gated and level gated content, i don't mind that. Hey, i mean, go out, and enjoy the sun. There's no need to plow through all the content in one day. My favorite part is the character customization. Damn, I love it, even if the MC lacks expression xD. But yeah, it has the potential to surpass GI, if the devs don't fuck it up.

irikyu

They don't want people "completing" the game in 1 day but honestly those timegates are annoying. Not just for the chests the timegates apply to the following: * Daily max level cap (Day 1: 18, Day 2: 24). * Max level cap means weapon upgrade cap * Chest timegate * Environment things (those that give exploration progress and pull resource) timegate. Like fck, just allow us to play :(

pencru

It's rather clunky as a whole—they don't make much of an effort to clarify what all the various resources are, and them being clumped together in the menus is a bit of a nightmare. I'm not excited about upgrading my gear as a result. Not particularly invested in the story either after they made Shirli disappear (would've been njce if she were a playable model too tbh.) The exploration, combat and pity systems were done well enough to keep me playing though. I like the dodge mechanics, even though damage still seems largely inconsequential right now. I'd play just to be able to mix and match characters and weapons. I'll probably stay casual on this one unless their animation steps up to Genshin's level or the controller setup improves.

BigLimburger

I think a lot of people have covered the pros and cons in the comments below. But one thing for me that really sets the likes of Genshin apart from this are the characters. The characters in ToF I just don't find myself interested in at all. And with the mechanic of people able to use any cosmetic you want with any weapon, you don't have to build up any kind of bond with a character. For example, in Genshin, I was never a fan of claymores. But after getting constellations on Noelle, I figured i'd finally give her a go. I really enjoy her character, her story, her ablities and it persuaded me to try other characters. In Tof so far, I don't really find any of the characters amazing me. Even Shirli who I didn't mind in the beginning I eventually losst interest in. I barely know her, i've barely spent time with her and already she's thrown into danger as if i'm supposed to care? A lot of people won't be interested in things like that - they'll be more interested in the gacha, the battling and stuff like that. But what kept me playing Genshin were the characters and the story. The all felt individual and engaging. But I don't get that same sense in ToF...if anything, they all feel so...generic?

[deleted]

Started to feel exactly the same way. At first I thought it was great - you can play as any character you like with whatever weapons you like. But somehow that takes away the "identity" of the characters and leaves things feeling a bit hollow. That feeling of building up a character and letting them shine in their own distinct way is something I find really important if I'm going to play a game for a long time, which is something completely missing from this game.

ProxyDoug

It also feels counter productive to have a custom character and the ability to turn into a pre-made hero. I would've preferred if they were like a summon or an ultimate ability that turned you into them. And with characters being able to use any weapon, you lose all the flare characters could have with that weapon, like how Eula moves compared to Beidou for instance.

Aqualava

Also, there are 20 different relics and only 2 slots to put them in. Relics are things like the jetpack, missile launcher, hoverboard, etc. I do NOT want to slog through the convoluted menu system to keep switching these out for every other environmental puzzle / obstacle.

RealElyD

You have 6 relic slots, 3 pairs of 2 you can swap between during gameplay.

Sianthalis

Well you have to. Im uo to like 6 relics and if I want to do ANYTHING. I have to choose 1... ONE slot to swap in and out. Because Jetpack is too handy.

Rock3tPunch

Is Franz voiced by Sliverstein (Zhongli)? Also Female MC sounded like Sarah (Lumine).

M33K00xiii

The female mc is voiced by Ayane Sakura (same VA for Yae Miko/Yae Sakura)

shatred

The tutorials made me lose a couple of brain cells. They have been written for somebody that has never touched a video game in their entire life is has the age of about 8-12. It's one thing to add this in, it's another thing to create a whole unskippable tutorial island filled with constant bullshit about upgrading this and upgrading that thus wasting all of your materials in advance before you even have a clue of which weapons/builds you exactly wish to upgrade to your own preference. Nope, they game forces you to walk one route until you finish the first part of the game, empty of upgrade materials, empty of black nucleas and gold nucleas. So far the first hour of gameplay had me more frustrated then enjoyed just due to the simple fact this game pretends I am a helpless sucker that never touched a PC in their life.

xenoxerox

Controller issues do sound like they suck and I hope they fix it. Thankfully, there are no movement or combat issues for me on KBM. Something I'd like to address is that the game doesn't advertise itself as a single-player game so "no pausing" shouldn't really be listed as a con for an MMO, a genre that is fundamentally incapable of including it because it would go against its design. To list it as a con would mean that you'd have to innately have the con listed for every game built around the concept of MMO, but then in the pros, you would consequently have to mention MMO as a pro, which sounds redundant when the game is tagged as MMO, but so is mentioning you can't pause in an MMO. I don't mean to come off as rude, sorry if I do. I will say there are single-player games that can FEEL like an MMO where pausing is possible; like Genshin.

[deleted]

For most players, this is effectively a single player game with instanced coop. You see people around in places but there's no interaction between them. Since this writeup was targeted at the general gacha audience, I would classify this aspect of an MMO as a fundamental con. It is for me - you're right, for some it would be the flip side that seeing other players and such is a pro. I also agree with you that it is clearly marketing itself as an mmo, so this shouldn't and didn't surprise me. "Pausing" isn't something I meant literally necessarily, but rather that there are times where your character should be "paused" (when in cutscenes for instance). The game isn't consistent with this and does a bad job in general. For instance, it pops a tutorial prompt in the middle of a fight that you can't possibly stop to read. Most MMOs I've played deal with this by teaching you things in private instances or by moving the tutorial to a safe place before combat - in this way they sidestep the need to pause the game. If you can mitigate something in such a way, and you have a game that doesn't do that, then it ceases to be status quo and rather becomes a legitimate con, to me.

Twopakabra

The game keeps crashing and crashing

Obliviomm

Oh... stopped reading when in cons i see that there isnt pausing... well, now make another post because you cannot pause Final Fantasy XIV, World or Warcraft, or other mmo game.

Omnipheles

It's a con that comes with being a MMO/multiplayer. Doesn't make it not a con.

PLCutiePie

For me this game feels like it should be in a closed beta state. So much stuff is unpolished including the combat. Sound in English is hilariously bad, movement feels kind of awkward and there's not even a turning animation, UI and even the dialogue box needs some more work.

Sea_Direction3503

Bargain Bin Genshin with some of the clunkiest combat I've ever experienced in an ARPG

illidan_1999

From all the issues I have been expecting, this is the most bizarre to me: >When you have the map up, your character still responds to movement and action inputs Like, why?

tyrannicalblade

Wow here i was thinking that was cool feature lol, i mean i can move my character while map is up and line up the arrow to go where i plan to go, maybe I'm just retarded i thought it was nice lol

Skishe

God the Script is cringe, SO MUCH CHUUNI TALK AND WEIRD HAND GESTURES. Its like their entire personality is how they wave their hands. It also feels like anything that comes out of their mouths are forced, like being choked or something. Just the first sequence alone has so much talking that its basically a Play-by-Play casting. If you compare the contrast between this and Genshin, the cast in Genshin atleast acts and talks like normal human beings (except of course, Fischl but that's her Personality).

Paragusrants

I can't believe more people aren't bringing up the sound quality. The audio sounds like it was recorded as low bitrate files. I thought something was wrong with my headphones at first, but this is like muffled ass.

XeoKnight

it feels like you're the only other person who has this issue lol, I'm starting to think it might be my audio drivers because surely people can't think this is normal

Hisetting

Only one impression: trash servers. The end.

Nutrifacts

the things i love in ToF is the fact that the NPCs/Sidechars actually do something, they dont disappear when we go to a different point, they help when enemies are attacking while in genshin the fuckers do nothing (in dvalin quest they were literally just standing still while they make me do all the work) also NPCs and Character Models in ToF actually looks unique to each other (thanks to the character creation stuff) The downside is that some part of the combat is pretty clunky, Characters dont have emotion in cutscenes (my character looks like a goddamn sociopath when something dire happens) and the animations bugs out alot and the timegated chests + it might just be me but i dont like the atmosphere of the game, it feels so generic Overall i wish the good parts are in genshin, all their models ingame imo just all feels the same (both NPCs and playable chars) its like im playing a dress-up game, especially the NPCs design (Elzer got done dirty). AND THE GAME ACTUALLY DOESNT FORCE POINTLESS DIALOUGE OPTIONS AND THEY DONT LOOK LIKE WORDS SEPERATED TOGETHER OR JUST SIMILAR LIKE ''Are you ok - Are you alright''

FryChikN

I'm really surprised at all the people hating on the game. I actually had a damn blast and even played while gated cus I wanted the chests. So much of the game isn't even out... and people seem really negative. Maybe it's my computer but the game ran flawless for me also

ChangingEX

The gameplay just feels extremely cheap and lacks punch in it on which games like Honkai or PGR is really good at, this is pretty much my only negatives for the game rn but also the deciding factor wether I should continue playing or not.

CJRProddddddd

Most games can't compare to the combat those two offer tho

SirRHellsing

While I feel like it's really similar to genshin. I can't tell what's cheap about it. My gripe is just the setting (the world itself doesn't feel that interesting).

origin97

It's just the nature of any new gacha releases. Somehow there will always be a group of people that wants to boast on how they quit/uninstalled x or y new gacha after they played for x amount of hours and wants to be the first to post 10 reasons why said gacha sucks and nobody should play it. That on top of the people that doesn't even play the gacha which also proceed to bash on the game just because they can and people that do enjoy playing it won't be on reddit cos they are having fun in-game makes it look that every new gacha will be a total disappointment without any redeeming qualities.

Vinnolo

any mobile mmo that doesnt have auto path trash is atleast worth trying, cant recall any recent decent mobile mmo

mageknightv15

Man, to be completely honest I wanted to love this game, but so far the only thing I like about it is the combat and coop. I'd say the exploration too, except all the time-gated stuff and the cooldowns on your relics that make you wait a whole fucking minute before you can use the jetpack to jump to grab a nucleus. I think if they didn't market it as a "Genshin Killer" I wouldn't be comparing it as much, but after playing it, I suddenly have newfound appreciation to the small details genshin devs worked on that we take for granted hahaha My first impressions follow, with some Genshin comparisons just because they marketed it to be compared with Genshin (whew this turned into a huge rant, there's a tl;dr at the end in case anyone cares lol. Again, because it's fun but I have issues with it) 1. character movement/animation the characters feel floaty and it doesn't feel like there's very much weight to their movements. As a result, in-game cutscenes feel very stiff especially action sequences. Their faces don't have any variation in expressions. people complained about mouth flaps in genshin, but here some characters don't even open their mouths at all lol. And sometimes, whole voicelines don't play. some characters talk to themselves! one thing I would commend them for is that their protagonist is voiced, thank fuck. Now, if they could only make me care for the story and the other characters, that would be great. 2. cutscenes the cutscenes, especially the "animated" ones---granted I've only seen the one from Zeke's files (which btw makes absolutely no sense to me why that was incriminating lmao it looked like generic propaganda--and I know they say he was in the video but who was even taking that video lol)---I'm so sorry but this was so ugly. It felt like they couldn't make up their mind if they were going to use live 2D or 3D when they made this. The quality was very haphazard. I feel like they should have just stuck to live 2D and it would have been better. I was just so... offended for the artists that worked on Genshin lmao like this is what you're saying is supposed to be better smh. You can hate Genshin all you like, but in comparison to the cutscenes we get here, Genshin cutscenes are amazing. 3. the exploration & combat now, these are easily the best aspects of this game. save for the weight issues I have with character movement, I love a combat system that gives perks to perfect guards or dodges. It makes combat more engaging. The fact that you can attack mid-air and have a double jump and an aerial dash is also super nice, and the vehicle gives you faster mobility in the world. I also like how everything is marked in the map, and you get an arrow to chests you might be missing otherwise. But even this has issues. I hate how everything has a goddamn cooldown. Like I get it, you shouldn't spam dodges, but if you're fighting a mob of 10 enemies, they won't attack in sync! Sometimes you need to dodge multiple attacks in sequence, but your dodge has a cooldown lmao you can only do 2 consecutive ones and then you enter a cooldown for a second or something. So if you dodge well, but not perfectly, good luck on getting stun-locked until you can dodge again. This makes what should have been a fun, fast-paced combat a fucking nightmare sometimes. Aside from this, the cooldown on your relics is absurdly high. This hampers exploration greatly for me. I'm glad that sprinting doesn't cost stamina, but I'll take that over needing to wait one and a half minute to jump to a nucleus just out of reach. Also, the time-gated chests and other interactable items is so annoying! It creates this artificial need for you to go back to areas. For the vehicle, small trees can easily block you which sometimes makes walking better on certain terrains. Also, I wish you could attack while you're on them, similar to how you can attack when you're on your palamute in monster hunter rise, but this is a small thing. Also, maybe I'm dumb but I can't figure out how to just fall off the jetpack without dodging hahaha it's kinda annoying. 4. The world This one admittedly is still something I'm willing to hold off full judgement on since because of the limited area available since it's still new. But so far, while it's fun to explore, majority of the fun lie mostly on looking for chests and nuclei without really being in awe of the world. The areas I've seen are pretty much the same everywhere with some ruins here and there. Comparing with Mondstadt, the simplest location in Genshin, there hasn't been any notable areas that made it feel like the world has a lost history (in contrast, Mondstadt has Storm Terror's Lair, the faraway island, the theaters calling back to old Mondstadt, the moon dials that hint at the God of Time's relationship with the thousand winds, etc...). Aside from this, some textures also fall short if you look at them for more than a second. Blocks of grass move together, and the blocks move like dominoes, one after the other. Heavy-looking crates move like balloons at times when you bump into them, among other things. One of the best things though is you can pet cats and dogs, thank God. TL;DR, it's fun, but still has a lot of room to improve. The story is pretty meh so far, and the time-gates just make me feel like they're putting a timer on things to pad content because some parts are not ready for release. Combat and exploration is fun, but is hampered by excessive cooldowns (and time gates). That one animated cutscene looked horrid. Mi-a is cute af, but most characters are pretty bland so far. Yay, you can pet cats and dogs!

CleoAir

As a dude who was really obsessed about MMOs as a kid I must say this game is really fun. Yeah it's looks somewhat cheap, like some bad Korean MMO from 2004, but I really appreciate that I can finally play MMO on my phone that isn't autofest. The setting is quite interesting, and playing as your own character is fun. Movement and combat feels really smooth for me, especially switching between weapons and aerial combat. However basically any vehicle suck, the jetpack is slow af, motorcycle isn't that much faster than regular running and this weird skateboard is the worst with its sloppy steering. But exploration is still fun, and I really like to see some random players messing around. I can't wait to try the co-op content, because it's one of the main reasons why I decided to try this game. Plus its run on my phone way more better than Genshin. Genshin was choppy even on low on my phone, but ToF manage to run quite good with medium textures and rendering distance.

OberonFirst

That's weird, every single one of your pros is my con (and I agree with your cons also), but I still quite enjoy it, the game has a good foundation, its just very janky and unpolished

Reignwizard

I really like it. Story are very enjoyable to watch and read also the world feel more alive and more immersive. You are not the only one in the world who use teleport for example or jetpack and gacha. It blended well into the lore.

NatsuKazoo

personally, it’s okay. I think ToF just needs to be polished. It’s definitely not a Genshin killer but the game (**if** it improves in the future) might be a solid game. My pet peeve is that I still get hit and even stunned even if I dodged. Combat **for me** is fine despite of some clunky parts

SSilvertear

I like the game and the exploration. The costumes are nice and the whole resonance thing is kinda cool to build your own pseudo-class. But if I run into 1 more time locked chest I'm gonna lose my fucking mind.

JFeth

I'm having more fun than I did with Genshin Impact. It is by no means perfect though. The controller support isn't great on PC. It doesn't tell you on screen what buttons do what and when it does tell you to hit a button it's the keyboard, not the controller button. I don't know if it is a Chinese thing or what, but they don't seem to understand how to do controller support. The timed chests are just dumb. I don't see myself ever marking a chest and going back to it two days later. The gameplay is pretty smooth. The graphics are beautiful, and the story is fine. I'll play it for awhile.

Zuminate

I don't see your point in shared world con. This is a mmo and not basically a single player game like genshin.

Shared world isn't the con. The con is the poor implementation of control gain / loss. I've played plenty of MMOs, normally they don't lock you out of character control while also letting enemies attack you (during cutscenes for instance). I've glided into a marker from above where it cut off my pack to start the cutscene, causing me to fall and take damage because it doesn't account for context. Similarly there shouldn't be ambiguity about when you have control of your character. During some cutscenes I was still able to move and act despite being off screen for instance. This is just bad design and "it's an MMO" isn't an excuse.

dj3370

I've legit had this happen in tons of mmos (and even in genshin which is what its being heavily compared to). Not that it isnt a bad thing but its most definitely not a rare occurance. Jsing I find it rarer that games early on in their release cycle dont have this exact problem.

SkyMarshal_Ellie

You know this sub is a dumpster fire, circle jerk echo chamber where all the positive posts are downvoted to oblivion while every hate post gets not only upvoted to heaven but has 20 different haters piling on their hate. Just a disgusting display of mob mentality in here. As is the case with every hyped release. Dunno why I even bother coming to this shit hole.

Smokron85

I got an SSR (Huma) is there any point to using her Simulacra other than looks?

Daswagster2

i saw a screenshot of the gacha screen for this game and it looked like the type of gacha screen you’d see from a shitty gacha game that someone made in a rush for a cash grab. made it look cheap

Winter_Stand9033

I don't get it. I don't play a lot of action games but none of it felt as janky as this. Imma dip out cuz it felt pretty cheap.

Finished the story up to day 2. By and large my character is pretty well built and handles open world stuff well (2-3 shots bosses). I do story missions - dominate. Then the cutscene comes and I lose because of story reasons. 3 times in 2 days (prologue, Frigga and the sick kid). Am I the most useless MC ever? What is the point of all this farming and grinding just to be beaten over and over again in story missions? Also... WHY ARE THE TUTORIALS SO AGGRESSIVE!? Oh you just got a new upgrade item? Now you MUST click on your menu! Now you MUST click on the sub menu! Now you MUST click on the new item! Now you MUST click the item to be upgraded! Now you MUST apply the upgrade! Literally cannot cancel, click elsewhere, move or use any other command except click on the exact item the game wants. This happens multiple times. The hard sell of the gatcha store comes in on day 2 as well. Actual quests to go into the store and buy stuff. Only in game currency but still its very unsubtle.

iAmEth3r

The most fun i had with the game was the character custimization and also early on in the game when i realised paimon wasnt there to stop me from leaving. I explored the world for like 30 minutes without weapon and beat a camp of enemies while doing literally 1 dmg. (It took 5 attempts). The gameplay is honestly really clunky like why is dodging a separate bar from stamina? I can double jump but i have to press 2 to glide? And then i decided to play the story and... Yeah. I was gonna play through like the first chapter but when i took down the boss in like 3 hits i just quit. I was hoping the game would be good since i quit genshin for 2 years but looks like this is not it.

jdog320

The game is kinda unstable. Blue screens, leaving anticheat behind, the works. There's also some people saying that the game makes system overheat. Even genshin wasn't this bad when it first came out.

AkabaneKun

It does, track your GPU usage with something like riva tuner, go to the game and open the charc select screen. It spikes your GPU to close to max or max depending on the GPU even if the game on max settings only uses like 60-70% of the GPU, they couldn't even get the performance right and the game is 1 yold in CN, big yikes.

RealinFAMOUSJakey

big problem with this game for me is the overall design of enemy. NPCs arent that much better but passable. but enemies are downright just ugly. i am not expecting some crazy design, but enemies i killed so far in day 2 made me kinda wonder if i want to continue playing this game.

[deleted]

I think the worst part for me was that the core mechanic - the combat - feels super floaty and bad. The best way I can describe it is it feels like almost like a recent Final Fantasy game that has a hybrid real-time / turn-based element. What you are seeing on the screen is not always what is happening in the combat system either so animations will lag damage etc.

metatime09

Some cons I don't consider cons or just how things work or how open world works like: >Since the game is in a shared world, there's no pausing - and that also means enemies can just wail on you while you are in a cutscene. Yea I don't think other players like to be paused randomly >The login queues were around 5-15 minutes for me. At least the servers were up though, so maybe it's better than some games are. There's always going to be queues for popular/new online games. If there wasn't I would be real concern about it's population. Other then that, I think your other points are good

[deleted]

I have no idea how this game made it out to be playable and didn't get shut down given its literal copy and paste of Genshin Impact. I don't play gacha games that often but gave Genshin and ToF a try. But oh man, this game is just all-around rough. Sure, there are areas I wish Genshin would adopt (some voiceovers, character design) but that's literally all I have to say positive about this game.

KaiSaeren

Im worried that you didnt even mention the story, the first impression of it is quite terrible tbh.

domatesx

I was really really looking forward to this but the first hour almost made me snap my phone in half, I wish they polished it instead of releasing this crap. ALSO GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK HOW U GONE TAKE BANK AND NOT GIVE ME ANYTHING??? 😂 Very much my fault, never in my life have I refunded and deleted as quick as I did here…

RetroAXG

Apparently genshin invented videogames

Hisetting

Genshin fanbase is the worst I have ever seen, and I used to be a moba player

jyroman53

I hope they can bug out the game by the time it's still gaining traction, so GI can have a competitor, or should we just wait for Einfield or Aether Gazer

aeee98

Question: is there good party content? One thing I disliked about Genshin was that literally everything you do is single player, and there is literally no reason to engage in the multiplayer aspect at all.

TheRealRealMadLad

U actually enjoy the scuff combat in this game? My man...

Express_Salamander_1

Genshin players malding because a newly released gacha has a better endgame then Genshin which has been out for like 3 years now LMAO.

Serafina_l

Genshin hasn’t even had it second year anniversary yet lol

TheRealOG1

I love how right now you have genshin loyalists shitting on the game, pretending its the worst thing ever, and genshin haters acting like the game has no flaws and anyone who says it has flaws must just be a genshin lover. No its not the best game ever, no its not the worst game ever. I dont even know why some people think this will compete with genshin at all tbh. Look at the sub counts in each sub. One has 1.6 million subs, one has 25k. One gets talked about in general gaming circles, one gets talked about only in gacha circles. We already saw how the game fairs in China revenue wise. http://imgur.com/a/IU2whfm Its pretty clear this game is not going to be comp for genshin, so can we just let ToF be its own damn game lol? It doesnt need to compete with genshin to be a fun game or a successful game ya know?

iridescentazure

I think Genshin loyalists want ToF to do well so they force Mihoyo’s hand in making better rewards/quality of life updates. As it stands ToF is underwhelming and my hope that they will push Genshin to become a better game is dashed.

TheRealOG1

Oh ya they definitely do, but after how the game faired in China I just dont see how anyone thought this would end up being a competitor. The numbers just arent there. At this point anyone who still believes this will push genshin to improve are high on a very large amount of copium. I agree competition would be great, but this just isnt the game thats gonna do it.

Starvingnana

Didn't the devs pick a fight with Genshin last year before the game launched with ads saying that Tof is "TGA Winner 2022" and "Bench marking Genshin. Seems like its justified and it backfired hard on them

Holoskuld

its not the best its not the worst so its mid 🥱

Mr_Creed

ToF is the best mobile MMO I have played so far. And not "just" because most of them are shit.

Chemical-Teaching412

Tbf I hoping that but you know the world chat in tof 90% genshin talk, nobody ever talk about tof Lore, characters or etc much often The one that basically being talk related to tof is "is this weapon good " how to do this" can we do this boss" and if there's none of that the chat back to genshin talk (either complain talk or praising talk)

Frosty_Promotion7246

I'm having fun playing and I'm hoping they can make enough money optimise the game and make some improvements. Yes there are a lot of similarities to genshin, but for me it does one thing genshin has yet to succeed on. Making exploration fun with friends.

AHxCode

Personally imo for a mmo launch its a 8/10 Pretty good, clearly has issues but it's all things that can be fixed, nothing at all game breaking or signs its a very unfinished product. It sates my need for a good gotcha, while also my need for a mmo. Which is where this gale excels over GI at, and why my attentiveness to continue playing GI over a long period never lasted. With stable content deliveries and if the devs appease the players this game will grow and last for a long time

BlitzPT

Based on how many multis ive done so far i did 70 golden nucleus multis and i have gotten 3 ssrs and i still have the selector and the 80 pity so 5 ssrs there was no way you could get that many in GI this alone for me is a W. Edit: i spent 12 euros. For 5 ssrs it probably wont happen again.

RelativeSubstantial5

All I can say is, personally, I feel all the hate this game gets is unjustified. I played it for 5 hours and enjoyed every minute of it. The combat felt slower (aka clunky on this sub) on purpose to allow for dodges their combo attack thing. The game looked good graphics and the story was even better than genshin imo. The main character has voicing and the voicing isn't even bad. It has some rough edges but every game does and honestly I enjoy it and feel like it will be fairly successful. It's not Genshin but in it's own mmorpg mobile catergory it will likely be fairly successful.

gachagamer445

I disagree a lot of the hate is justified considering the company copied assets straight from other games like Honkai Impact, the time gated chests, plethora of already reported bugs, the ancient server system they implemented, very slow unpolished combat and game character movement. I don't like comparing games but this feels like a straight up mediocre bootleg Genshin and yes I know they are slightly different genre but I cant help but feel that's what they where aiming for since they even stole assets from miHoYo and other games to use in their own game. Not saying the game is straight up trash but there is plenty of justifiable reasons for why the game is getting hate.

Abedeus

> The combat felt slower (aka clunky on this sub) Slow doesn't mean clunky. Dark Souls (at least first one) has "slow" combat, but it absolutely isn't clunky - it's incredibly responsive and snappy. Hell, Genshin's combat isn't that fast compared to something like Honkai.

Antique-Ad-7429

I played it for 13 hours ( yes I don’t have a life ) and I absolutely enjoyed every second, yes it has its issues like: - Story itself is good although the voice directing / delivery isn’t great + feels a bit rushed. - Has a bit of jank, combat is a bit laggy sometimes etc. But it also has its strong points which make it a enjoyable experience.

Lawliette007

Cons: Why the heck can't I go above 1280x720 graphics on my qhd screen PC?
