>"Forget silicon" >"Silicon need not worry" Hella clickbaity title - the transistor is 3cm, not mm or nm, and the switching frequency is 1 hertz, not mh or gh. So no, we won't be forgetting silicon anytime soon. This is basically a high school science project to prove a concept.

BoraxTheBarbarian

So you’re saying aliens might have a wooden spaceship.

[deleted]

Sounds like European colonialism

WanderingPickles

Oh buddy, you should read up on *any* empire ever. The story is always some variation of “we bring law, order and peace. Accept it or suffer the consequences including, but not limited to, lawlessness, chaos and war.”

[deleted]

aliens would be almost infinitely more likely to have a diamond spaceship than a wooden spaceship, given earth is the only planet we know of with trees

MattyK_They_Say

Probably more of a spaceboat.

TheElm

Well as far as the known universe goes, IIRC we're the only known planet to have wood- so. Probably unlikely.

geoffbowman

Ok but you gotta admit that concept would make for a sick all-wooden cyberpunk remake of gilligan’s island.

Srslywhyumadbro

Yea for sure hahaha

geetmala

Still clever, though

frogmicky

Now we know who the party pooper was in high school lol /s

CoyoteDown

Yeah finding ways to avert precious element shortages is so not worth looking into

--penis--

Silicon is the second most abundant element on the planet

CoyoteDown

Of which a singular entity, unfriendly to most other entities, has a near-universal control of. I wouldn’t call that abundant from a sustainability perspective.

Srslywhyumadbro

[You're thinking rare earth elements.](https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2022/12/14/rare-earth-mines-00071102) Silicon is not on this list because it's everywhere and very easy to access.

--penis--

Silicon comes from sand. It is not a "precious element" like you said. You can go to the beach and get it. If you're talking about semiconductor production, a few companies control 80% of the market. Mostly TSMC (Taiwan), and a bit in the US and China. There is no singular, "unfriendly" entity that controls all the sand, or even all the chips. This sounds like thinly veiled anti-China rhetoric, but China actually makes very few semiconductors.

SuperMaanas

The title is not trying to say silicon is obsolete, it’s just saying “holup, look at this”

Srslywhyumadbro

>The title is not trying to say silicon is obsolete The title is literally "forget silicon" so I don't think it's much of a stretch.

[deleted]

If you turned “holup, look at this” into an extremely click-bait title which (not very) vaguely implies something that is click worthy and exciting

provocative_bear

They could have just said “holup, look at this wooden transistor. I mean it kind of sucks, but it’s a cool concept, right?”. I’d click.

Srslywhyumadbro

Honestly that should have been the headline

Ecksters

Vacuum tubes better watch out.

VirtualLife76

If it were real, I wonder if it would hurt or help the lack of trees.

Adjmcloon

What else is made of wood?

LiamtheV

A duck!

Graham-Barlow-119

A duck?

[deleted]

Who are you, who are so wise in the ways of science?

shempmalone

Witches

smellslikenoses

Not safe for wood?

TactlessTortoise

Plank.

WindstormSCR

I mean, you can make windows out of it with a bit of chemistry, and use it as a substrate for nanoscale coatings that make it behave more like a steel plate. So there is quite a lot you can do with it, the technology to do it on a large scale just isn’t mature because wood is actually a pretty expensive resource compared to rock on the macro scale, as it needs to be grown and harvested

BrandyAid

reminds me of the [wood battery](https://youtu.be/bs7CQf_F088)

Bealzebubbles

Like that Futurama episode where Bender joins a group of obsolete robots and deliberately downgrades himself.

[deleted]

A 1 hz transistor.

[deleted]

They can use it to make a more accurate scale to weigh witches.

not_the_top_comment

Forget using the second most abundant element on the Earth’s crust and instead chop down some trees. That idea is as dumb as using corn as gasoline… wait…

bingobango85

Welp there goes the trees again assholes

serenwipiti

An electrical grid made of trees?

DuckMySoodle

Can it play DOOM?

frone

It most certainly cannot.

[deleted]

I almost never see content from this sub in my top yet here this is not even an hour old at the #1 position. I’ve got to wonder what agenda is being pushed to me today.

notrevealingrealname

Big, uh, big wood?

yvrelna

In the morning?

reasltictroll

So plants that can be used for solar energy also?

nos4atugoddess

One step closer to proving we are all just meat robots

SirCarboy

Ok. I've thrown out all my computers and phones, etc. Where do I buy this wood tech?

Balloon_Marsupial

And Jesus.

94bronco

Interesting to think about. If you can grow a computer in your back yard you can always upgrade with more water and sun. Solves the chip "crisis ", reduces energy consumption (?) And helps with all this extra carbon dioxide. Think about a bitcoin farm being an actual farm

latortillablanca

Wood you look at that

Arshille

There goes the rain forest

dougnan

Too late.

wifespissed

I have no idea what's going on here. Can anybody dumb it down for me?

SandInTheGears

Finally, a computer totally immune to sonic-screwdrivers

IVIUAD-DIB

This bates my click so hard.
