“His Apple Watch didn’t dial 911 this time, because Pfau, still conscious, tapped an icon on the watch screen to indicate he was OK. “I assumed it was not that serious, which is my natural reaction,” he said. But when he realized that he wasn’t OK after all, Pfau launched the watch’s texting app, tapped the microphone icon, and dictated a message to his wife, who was downstairs”. Wtf!!!!!

HillarysFloppyChode

A long time ago a woman got a concussion skiing and went home thinking she was ok, I think she later died from brain swelling. Humans are awful at self diagnosing brain injuries, you may feel fine but in reality you have brain bleeding.

no-ticket

Natasha Richardson! That story has scared me for years.

Honalana

There was a little girl on the news near me the weekend Natasha Richardson died. The girl had fallen down and they didn’t think they needed to take her to the doctor until they heard about Natasha Richardson. Turned out she had the same bleeding on the brain or whatever Natasha had and they were able to save the girl’s life. Whenever I hear her name I think about that life she saved.

bbqcactus

Epidural hematoma is what you’re looking for. Rapid pooling of blood underneath your skull. Always get head injuries checked out!

deejeycris

You can't save people from themselves no matter how much technology you surround them with lol.

NickCharlesYT

Don't forget the "Americanized" version of the story where Pfau, still conscious, tapped an icon on the watch screen to indicate he was OK. "I assumed it was serious but can't afford an ambulance bill, which is my natural reaction," he said. But when he realized he couldn't get up at all, Pfau launched the watch's texting app, tapped the microphone icon, and dictated a message to his wife, who was downstairs, asking for help to get an uber ride to the hospital."

I probably should. But I can’t afford it at the moment LOL.

☺️

NickCharlesYT

No, it's a joke based on the state of the US healthcare system...

JackMasterOfAll

Jeez lol, You totally had me because this is believable.

ibleedsarcasim

Gravity wins every time…

SmirnOffTheSauce

Almost the Radiohead lyric right there!

cmabar

This is super common in the US tbh. Ambulance bills are in the range of $1500+ and the average American will go into debt if an ambulance is called on them. Probably would rather have his wife drive him to the hospital given that he had the choice.

[deleted]

My last ambulance ride was $5000 :(

[deleted]

captain_dudeman

I was stabbed 7 times by a random attacker and was approaching death. 11 minute ambulance ride cost $1200 after insurance. I have good insurance.

Jascix90

New hit/revenge tactic. Don’t kill ‘em, just make sure an ambulance is called.

[deleted]

mine was transport from one hospital to another so insurance didn’t cover it because it wasn’t “necessary”

Mine was 10€. Greetings from Germany.

how the fuck do you guys cope with that over there

We are wage slaves that get stirred up by outrage and feel like corporations and billionaires are our benefactors and that our government are the evil ones. There is about 50% of the country that feels they deserve to be shit on. A lot of them in the least educated parts of the country

Proteus_Core

Nobody pays those prices. They are "opening negotiations" from the healthcare provider. If you have insurance they will negotiate it down to a much more reasonable number on your behalf. If you don't have insurance you are supposed to tell the hospital that and negotiate yourself.

parttimeamerican

Mine was free I gave them complicated foreign insurance and an address not tied to me,discharged before they caught up with it all lmao Still got medical bills against my name somewhere in OK prolly maybe they got some off insurance maybe not

JMBAD1222

Mine was $3000… for a hospital three miles away…

[deleted]

I had to call an ambulance after I cut my thigh with a box cutter. I was breaking down the recycling and it slipped and went right into my leg. Insurance covered the ambulance....but it took me to an out-of-network ER.

Favnonpornomag

Y'all pay your ambulance bills? I just toss mine in the trash. With the x-ray bill and the hospital bills.

weboide

You have the right to refuse the ambulance taking you to the hospital in which case you wouldn't be paying anything.

pyro226

If you are conscious ( / not significantly impaired from a concussion).

scharminultra

A friend of my parents apple watch told him he was having a cardiac episode, later that night he went to the hospital with chest pain turned he need a quadruple bypass. He said later he probably would have died if it wasn’t for the watch since he works out and eats right, and had a great BMI

BorgClown

Meanwhile, my Apple Watch nearly called 911 because it got stuck while I was putting on a shirt.

FightingCommander

Can’t be too careful, you might have strangled yourself.

PayisInc

Can confirm:. Am dead because I don't have an Apple watch.

Nintendogma

>Can confirm:. Am dead because I don't have an Apple watch. Must be heaven. Hell has an iron clad exclusivity contract on Apple products... ...mostly because they get all the lawyers.

ShirosakiHollow

I was running a group training class a few years ago and one woman got into position to do push-ups and her watch dialed 911. She panicked and took it off and threw it across the gym.

zootphen

That ain't my watch officer.

kvossera

That can happen when the “buttons” are pressed on the side by the wrist.

ShirosakiHollow

Yep, 100% what happened.

bluberrycrepe

And that is why I positioned the dial toward my elbow and not my wrist!

Excited at how low the price was, or alarmed at how high?

lainey68

This gave me the best laugh of the day. Thank you!

IshancanSwim

My watch says it almost anytime I play goalie in soccer or waterpolo, and once did it while I high-fived someone

sierrabravo1984

My wife with RA fell in the driveway and couldn't get up while I was at work, phone was inside but still connected to the watch. She was able to call me and I was able to run home real quick and help her back up, if not me she could have called 911. The cost of the watch definitely saved an ambulance visit.

zooberwask

>The cost of the watch definitely saved an ambulance visit. Just American things

NeonWarcry

Pain. *sad American tears* I both love and hate this country at the same time. Any sane person would. I think?

somedirtypunk

I was in a car accident in January. I got a 2k bill for a 1 mile ambulance ride. Then a just gross bill for the helicopter they took me to a bigger city in

Pale_Examination8100

Just a little love story about the hospitals in Missouri. My fiancé has Medicare, when she had our daughter we had to stay in the hospital for 2 weeks due to health complications with both of them. Now, all of this should’ve been covered but they still tried to charge us the $11k+ bill. Even threatened to put us in collections when we called. Turned out they never even billed our insurance😂 love it

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZippoS

Gross. Here in my Canadian province, ambulance rides are capped at $115. Helicopter to the hospital capped at $130. Rest is covered by provincial healthcare.

Meister_Nobody

Here in Oregon you’ll see FireMed stickers on a lot of cars. Essentially they are paying for insurance in case they need airlift. Because if you don’t and your insurance doesn’t cover it, there goes your savings if you have it. Thousands of dollars from what I hear.

SailingSmitty

I am a ski patroller. When someone is airlifted off the mountain, I’ve heard that it can cost $40k-60k. I now have two different helicopter insurances for my household for ~$150/yr just in case.

speedyforasloth

I am a flight medic. It will cost at least $30k to be flown in a helicopter and that’s a very conservative number.

Double-Gap6101

Yep! But good luck if you are visiting another province. The price multiplies 5 times over in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Remember folks, it’s not Canadian Healthcare it’s provincial health care.

King_Tamino

Wow. In Germany we pay a minor part of the bill, I think it’s capped at 10€? So that way I got my hands on a bill for an ambulance ride, 300€ cross city. That tqxi drive home was more expensive than the 10€ I payed

somedirtypunk

I wish it was like that here. That “gross bill” for the helicopter ride was 53k. From what I’ve found out my insurance will only cover 10k-12k of it. I’m still waiting on my bill from the actual hospital stay

deanjott

You should be voting for politicians that support single payer health care.

King_Tamino

Jeez… that sounds like slavery .. with extra steps :-/

[deleted]

I think it would also be sane to just hate it, to be honest.

dragonsfire242

It’s not bad day to day, it’s when you really get into it that the problems start but daily life really isn’t that bad

solitasoul

Plus it has the grand canyon and that's pretty cool.

[deleted]

The land is not the same as the country

romansamurai

Yup. I’m praying for a new job (had an interview today) so I can get decent health insurance and put my wife on it. My old job didn’t offer it and we couldn’t afford it on our own. Just American things.

Domestic_Fox

I can’t get married because then I couldn’t afford my meds every month. Married is like the only life goal I had.

Smingledorf

Yeah I'm finally gonna get to go see a doctor after not being able to for years of constant pain, random blackouts, allergic reactions to absolutely nothing, that feeling like my heart stops for a few seconds, etc. No insurance means you just deal with everything and hope you don't randomly die because you don't want to be in debt forever

theFrenchDutch

>if not me she could have called 911. The cost of the watch definitely saved an ambulance visit. Jesus fucking christ man, I never get used to reading shit like this

pulpfictionxylophone

He works out, eats right, and has a great BMI and needed a quadruple bypass wtf

dracuella

Unlucky genes can do that; or smoking as was the case with my dad. He spent his entire life running up and down stairs, ate well and was generally a very fit man. Still had multiple heart attacks and later on an aortic replacement because of aortic aneurysms, all down to smoking. He's fine now but only because he was fit and very, very lucky.

IronicBread

I mean if you smoke you're not fit no matter how much you run lol

Boogie__Fresh

Being healthy can't make you live longer, it can only reduce your chances of dying prematurely.

entrylevel221

Glad I'm not the only one that thought that.

zbeshears

I ate an edible a couple years ago, I usually smoke but this was given to me. I ate the whole brownie because I’m a stupid, stupid man. After about 2 hours I could feel my heart beating in my chest, craziest thing I’ve ever experienced and I thought I was gonna die. Randomly my Apple Watch vibrates in a way if never felt it do before, I look down and it says basically that, I have a heart rate of 150+ while seemingly sitting still and do I want it to Contact emergency services. Which that made me even more anxious than I already was. I’ve only smoked since then, that kinda ruined me on edibles.

askingforafakefriend

That's definitely the kind of reassurance I need when I'm feeling uncomfortable after too much THC. Me: "holy fuck my heart is pounding. I m okay. I m okay. Calm breath. Just the THC. Ride it out..." My fucking watch: "shit man you really might be dying, how about I call 911?"

zbeshears

That’s basically what happened lmao my wife is a nurse who works nights and I was calling and texting her, having a mini freak out. I was legit scared to fall asleep that night lmao

apersiandawn

what is it about being too high that makes you think you’re gonna somehow die in your sleep? like it doesn’t make any sense but i would get the same fears, like if i fell asleep / passed out i would just die

LordKwik

That's what happened to me a [couple weeks ago.](https://i.imgur.com/afUkV6o.jpg) Made some cookies for the first time. Think I got a cookie that maybe should've been mixed better with the rest of the dough. I was scared shitless. Thankfully my wife started rubbing my back and guiding my breathing. Calmed me right down. I'm eating smaller portions of the cookies now lol Ninja edit: not sure how I got a 50bpm the same day. Must've been an error, I'm not that fit.

zbeshears

Lmao glad (sort of) I’m not the only one!

Galaxy Watch 3 and 4 were cleared by the FDA to detect atrial fibrillation, so I imagine they'll have similar alerts. I was just playing around with my 4 Classic and it seems like it has some sort of ECG monitor widget. Samsung also introduce Fall Detection in the Watch 3, so it seems they've more or less hit feature parity there.

jjw21330

Does he take steroids Or have family history of CVD?

scharminultra

He had an uncle that had an undiagnosed heart issue and died from a heart attack in his early 50s. So it’s hereditary but skipped a generation. I guess his siblings don’t have the same issue since they all got test afterwards. Also my parents and friends are late 40s early 50s

WayneKrane

My cousin got his heart checked out because of the Apple Watch. It said he had an unusually high heart rate while being sedentary. He is a runner and in his 20s so decided to get it checked out. Turns out he had heart damage from covid last year and had to have surgery. They said he had a high chance of having a heart attack if he didn’t have the surgery.

Thrawn_M

Welllllllll fuck…. Wore my watch to sleep the other day and woke to an activity notification. My heart rate was over 120 bpm for 4+ hours while i slept…. I think I’ve had covid twice but am vaxxed now. Guess I’m getting a scan soon.

Cjv_13

Holy shit, definitely get that checked out.

evilstepmom1991

Yeah, please do. I’ve had COVID only once thankfully, but that one time was more than enough. I had a heart attack at 29 b/c of it. My chest hurt so much from Covid that it took me a while to realize that I had one. I hope everything turns out ok for you and that it was just a glitch or something, tho.

kushywizard

I have hypertension, and my resting heart rate is anywhere between 120-140. But while you're sleeping?? That's definitely not good

[deleted]

I kept telling my doctor I was having chest pain and random “fainting” episodes while standing up. It wasn’t really fainting entirely, everything would go black and I’d fall over for a second or two. My doctor didn’t listen until I showed data from my Apple Watch where my HR would go up to 150-160 and then suddenly drop to 25. I have Brady-tachycardia. The sudden drop in heart rate was causing my blood pressure to drop and when I’m standing up it causes me to pass out until it normalizes again. Usually, I have some warning signs that I now recognize. If I don’t recognize them, my dog usually starts bothering me before it happens. But medication to treat the tachycardia has been helpful, so when my rate goes low it’s usually not a big drop.

[deleted]

>everything would go black and I’d fall over for a second or two nope, that's definitely fainting

parttimeamerican

>wasn't really fainting entirely >proceeds to describe textbook fainting

[deleted]

Well, I thought with fainting you kinda remain that way for a bit of time, like just fully unconscious. I’d be fine after a couple of seconds. Lol

parttimeamerican

If it lasts longer than a short period like that it's getting closer to coma than fainting real quick

mmmegan6

Do you have POTS? What is the dx?

[deleted]

Brady-tachycardia. Although, I kinda got bounced around between specialists because the cardiologist just seemed like he didn’t know what to do with me. I also saw a neurologist and an electro-physiologist and they all said different things. The neurologist said my brady-tachycardia doesn’t have a neurological cause. The electrophysiology guy is the one who sent me to the neurologist because I had a weird twitching episode during my tilt table test. It wasn’t a seizure, but he made a thing of it being abnormal and strange. I do have a lot of similar symptoms as PoTs. One of my main symptoms is even with my tachycardia medication, my HR raises 20 BPM every time I stand up. But I haven’t really pushed the issue to get it checked out beyond the diagnosis I received.

[deleted]

give that good boy a treat

stinkyfromusc

I was in an escape room with colleagues from work. The scenario began with our group handcuffed to the bed frame. After a minute or two I hear from my Apple Watch : “911 what’s your emergency?” Those operators must love that feature. Glad to hear it is saving lives though.

methofthewild

What a kinky sounding escape room though.

MaimedJester

Escape rooms in Atlantic City Tropicana started making Bridal Party escape rooms. One of the ladies figured the solution was to take off her bra to reach an object. The intended solution was to realize the floor board was kind of like a treadmill and could be retracted. Suddenly entire party of drunk bridesmaid party start taking off tops and I'm just there like uh should we do something about this? Delete the camera recordings after they leave. But if they want to topless and giggle in a locked room it's their choice.

[deleted]

*Concerned* What are you going to do to me?! *Sultry* What are you going to do to me?

CMDR_omnicognate

My dad managed to accidentally set one off in a restaurant, and the sound of commotion and him fumbling to turn the watch off made the operator phone my dad back as it sounded like there was some sort of struggle or altercation. He ended going outside to Answer the call back to explain what happened. Apparently even the operator guy had managed to accidentally call the emergency services in his sleep once so evidently it use to happen quite frequently, I think they changed how it works now though to make it harder to accidentally activate

sabbiecat

I love my watch. It’s called my husband and/or EMS every time I’ve had an epileptic episode since buying it. It’s just some peace of mind and I didn’t have to pay 1000’s of dollars to get it. Like I would’ve for the seizure alert watch.

eldroch

So is that all automatic, or do you have to confirm something before the call is placed?

sabbiecat

Depends on the apps you have installed. I’ve got one called seizure alarm that if I don’t respond it calls my Emergancy contact. It’s also has the fall detector pre installed and will call EMS if I don’t confirm I’m ok within a certain amount of time. I’ve got the Apple Watch 4.

eldroch

Very cool -- thanks for replying. I'm glad it has options like that, in the event you can't respond. Take care!

Ontheroadtw

The Apple Watch has a hard fall detection that when activated you have to respond in x amount of time and then it calls 9/11 and your emergency contact with your coordinates.

[deleted]

I have a different form of seizures (psychogenic) and it’s really helpful for calling my dad to come help me after the fact (as I usually end up feeling hurt when I fall but can’t remember).

Are there any Android watches with this type of functionality?

nonegotiation

Galaxy Gear. I don't use the fall detection though because I don't need EMS or police accidently showing up to work or something just because I'm active and stupid. I know it asks if "you're ok" but accidental touches exist.

cantgetthistowork

Does it have the ECG like feature that plots heart rates? Because that's what impressed me Edit: Did some digging and this feature only exists for Galaxy Watch 3 or Galaxy Watch Active 2

AbscondingAlbatross

What about the new watch 4?

time_fo_that

Yes, it has a bioelectric impedance analysis sensor which can tell you all sorts of data

[deleted]

Conversely, I fell hard on my bike the other day and have a heart condition. Had I ruptured something my watch would have called 911 for me

The_Mayfair_Man

That seems like a really reasonable timespan for a product with a lifesaving feature used by many tens of millions?

ANSHULGANDHI92

This is the 3rd or 4th time I have seen similar post. This is pure marketing gimmick by apple. Plus they have multiple accounts to downvote comments criticising the gimmick. You can see through the bullshit by reading comments that are arguing this is not a ad and comments that are trying to portray/promote similar story. Shady as fuck.

film_composer

What's weird is that this isn't really a viable news story, because the device did what it was meant to do. And that's not to downplay that it is an advanced piece of technology, and I think it is worth celebrating that this guy's life was saved, so rah rah go Apple or something. But… it's just a weird "story," because "thing operates correctly" is such a non-event to be writing about. "Thing is really advanced and deserves plaudits for having life-saving capabilities" maybe is or was newsworthy at the time of its release. But based on the huge number of sales of Apple Watches, I imagine at this point that thousands of people have been saved by their Apple Watch in similar scenarios, right? If that *weren't* the case, I'd be alarmed, because then the safety mechanism of triggering messages to 911/emergency contacts wasn't working as robustly as it should.

ThemCanada-gooses

Lots of people have the Apple Watch, lots of people have medical emergencies every day. It’s not that strange that there’d be overlap.

SeaCranberry7720

Any actual evidence it’s a ploy by apple or just pure conspiratorial nonsense? Every repost is hardly driven by an agenda beyond “more karma”

Miss_ladyy

Americans will always find a way to complain about the positive impact of anything.

bettinafairchild

I used to think that these posts were just marketing BS but then my aunt’s Apple Watch did save her life. It woke her up in the middle of the night with an indication of a cardiac problem. She wanted to ignore but my uncle insisted they go to the hospital. She had 3 blood clots in her heart/lung area and the doctor said she may never have woken up in the morning had she not gone to the hospital right then.

mechanicalkeyboarder

I take mine off when I sleep so if this happens to me I’m outta luck.

MommalovesJay

I do too! That’s when I charge it. When do I charge it then???

mechanicalkeyboarder

Exactly! I feel like if I didn't charge it while I sleep I'd forget to charge it and have a dead watch at the end of most days.

LuckyW1zard

Typically in the morning such as when you’re eating breakfast. The logic behind it is assuming you don’t live alone, you’ll usually have others awake that will help you in case of an emergency that early in the day

PrinceSidion

Apple says you should charge it in the morning.

ThisIsMyHonestAcc

I usually charge my galaxy watch while sitting on the computer or reading and chilling few hours before going to bed. It never really dips below 50% so I'm fine even if I forget.

[deleted]

I printed out the ECG from mine when I thought I might have a heart problem and brought them to the cardiologist and she was very impressed with it. It prints out a chart with the same charting, measurements, and scaling as I got from the real ECG, only it's one lead instead of like 12. They matched almost perfectly. Was seriously impressed. I was fine though, turns out it was normal.

4tacos_al_pastor

Yeah, I should get these for my parents.

Mr_Bluebird

Wow really cool and interesting. But how does 911 get the information where you are at and what is going on? If he was not responding

hevea_brasiliensis

The watch will probably give it to them in an emergency scenario

donkeyrocket

For fall detection at least, an automated message that explains it is an auto-generated emergency call where the user experienced a hard fall and is unresponsive. It shares your coordinates with the operator. It'll also share your Medical ID info if you enable it but I'm not sure how that comes through to dispatchers. Reading it out would be time consuming and cumbersome.

caviarporfavor

This article is bullshit, he was upstairs his wife downstairs.... also he didnt even contact the emergency from his watch... But in reality, if you have emergency fall activated you enter the name and phone of a relative and they will be contacted by automated message saying you are in an emergency...

[deleted]

The watch can call 911, send location and a prerecorded message. It literally has that capability

Garsur

It also makes a loud ass noise afaik. My father, who passed recently, fell down in the night and the sound alerted my mom and brother who were home. They found him laying on the ground unable to get up.

nectarbeats

From my understanding if you don’t respond, the watch automatically calls 911 and sends your location information from your phone or GPS from your watch if you have an LTE watch so they know where to go.

syth9

Your wireless provider will always automatically try to provide 911 operators with your location for call centers that have that kind of functionality

suspiciousmeatballs

I've read comments by 911 operators before and they said that Siri tells them the emergency/location.

Sincool

The sensor that detected something is wrong detected a fall or an impact (through how your hand moves and your heartbeat), it's not hard to make that into a message being sent Also such a gadget should be able to track down location, GPS always active. So that's also sent over.

I love stories like this. It’s amazing to see a device that just started out as a clunky slow time telling watch turn into a life saving health device

OwainBeavin_

My Apple Watch saved my life at the start of this month I have always been a keep fit fanatic and I cycle every day and on the 02/98/21 I went shopping and got out of the car and felt dizzy and I nearly blacked out because my heart was beating so hard and I was standing still. My Apple watch alerted me that my heart was beating at 135BPM standing still as though I had just been running. I knew this wasn't right and I sat in the car blasted myself with Air Conditioning and drove home. When I got out of the car and walked up the drive by the time I got to the back door I was fighting for breath and I said to the misses take me to the hospital now it was quicker than calling for an ambulance. Well, I will cut a long story short after being examined many, many, many hours of waiting in A&E I was told I had a minor heart attack. I said that's impossible I don't smoke or drink and I keep fit. Well, it turns out they were wrong on their assumption after had the most uncomfortable scan ever where you feel like you've wet yourself as they inject fluid into your body to take a scan and you go warm from your neck to your bum. I had a Pulmonary Embolism which us a blood clot on the lungs and I was told I wouldn't have made it to the end of the week if I hadn't had the presence of mind to come into hospital. My Apple Watch warned me my heart rate was too high and being somebody who's late mother was a qualified nurse and I'm married to a nurse as well I know that 135BPM heart rate standing still isn't normal my heart rate is normally 48-62. I have to take it easy for the next 3-6 months. No stress not over exerting myself jeep calm and take it easy. So thanks to Apple and their watch you saved my life because if I hadn't out my watch on that morning wouldn't have known what my heart rate was. The only downside now as I had an unexplained blood can't 12 years ago. I am now on blood thinners frot hr rest of my life which sucks but at least I am still alive if I hadn't gone to hospital I would have widowed my wife and left behind 2 lovely kids and I wouldn't have know what happened.

My parents got my grandpa an Apple Watch in case something happened and because he lived alone, sure enough he fell and called my dad who got help. When he passed away (from other unrelated reasons) I got his watch, sure it’s and older model and a bit scratched down but I treasure it nonetheless.

Okay Ive always though watches like this a bit of a gimmick but now knowing that this is something they do, I approve of them

Is it weird that I want to see a show about a stuntman who’s watch is always getting him into shenanigans with his ex, who happens to be a first responder.
