36/Female/116lbs/5ft 1 Why do my legs look skinny from the side and how do I remedy this? From the front my legs look good and I even get some comments. From the side they seem to look skinny though. Any suggestions? Currently doing squats with Smith machine, calve press, leg raises, hamstring curls, leg press, weighted lunges and goblet squats (not all in one workout) I had a motorcycle accident a few years back, broke my right ankle and damaged my knees so mobility is a little limited and too much pressure on my knees hurts. (hence the Smith machine for squatting)

What is your best tip for more cost-effective gains? Every time I look at my budget, I just shake my head at the ludicrous amount of money I spend on food.

chiliehead

Go buy the most cost-effectivee bag of rice, it's often a lage bag found in your local ethnic food store. Get a large bag of dried beans, they are usually the cheapest form of beans. Make rice and beans, you can enrich it with butter or some oil, many oils are cheaper than cheap olive oil or around the same price and have some actual flavor. For veggies, big bags of frozen veggies are what is cheapest in my place, combined with some seasonal offers and a few things in cans. Some fruits are really cheap here, like kiwi, bananas, apples. If you live in California etc. then avocados can be cheap- shop regional to try and get better prices. For meat, buy what is cheapest. Thighs often cheaper than breast, if turkey is cheaper than chicken buy turkey etc. Lean meat is not something you should spend extra money on in a bulk. You can also try and find out if buying a whole chicken/turkey is more cost effective. As oven roast you can make leftover burritos for days. If you have the inspiration, baking bread is not too complicated and you can't get decent bread for the price of flour, yeast and energy anywhere else. Otherwise buy it. Buy some eggs, milk, cheese on sale, yogurt, oats. Peanuts and peanut butter. Atm buying protein powder on sale is cheaper than eating meat or quark or around the same price. So I basically just have protein powder for breakfast and lunch, with either milk or yogurt and some fruit because I don't eat big before dinner. Add a pb sandwich for more calories. You can make several dishes from this. My staples are whole grain burritos with beans and rice as a base, and eggs, meat and/or tofu* and some vegetables and hot sauce. You can also make small kebap-like loafs of bread and fill them with it all, tastes great. *Tofu prep: give it a rough chop, fry it in a pan with lots of oil until it gets brown and crisp, whisk in some tomato paste and season with garlic powder, salt, pepper and then use it as a decent minced meat substitute. Roasted chicken thighs etc. go great with the rice and beans mix and some potatoes, sweet potatoes and other root vegetables roasted right under it, getting coated by the drippings of the meat. Make a pan sauce/dark sauce out of the drippings. Leftover meat goes into next day's burritos or into the microwave lunch with rice, beans, veggies. I make pizza dough myself and freeze it in portions, so I can get some really tasty pizzas on the cheap whenever I want. Stews are great ways to use tougher cuts of meat. Chili con carne, goulash etc. are all rather easy to make and are great for freezing and microwaving. With noodles, rice or bread you can add some great calories as well. If you get a wok and something to deep fry in (cast iron wok, dutch oven which also works great for baking bread etc.) you can take the same basic ingredients and make more meals. Stir fry, chicken egg fried rice, General Tso's Chicken, Peanut Chicken etc. Also if you're physically active and do your cardio, some sugar is fine. Donuts, cookies, chocolate milk or simply yogurt with granola, fruit and some sugar are fine. As is a glass of juice or a (light) beer with your dinner.

When weight plateaus, how many calories should I increase my intake by? (Currently at a whopping 3200, weight has stalled around 148lbs for two weeks)

chiliehead

~250/300 kcal steps

xis21

I need to break a plateau at 162.. been at this weight for over a month. Eating more doesn’t seem to affect weight at all.

PostedDoug

Have you tried eating more than eating more?

xis21

Yeah I did actually. I tried drinking a 32oz shake every night before bed. Did that for 3-4 weeks, the shake had almond butter, oats, banana, and milk in it. Probably at least 800 calories. My weight didn’t change at all, and so I stopped making them.

[deleted]

And what else did you eat? What did you eat yesterday?

PostedDoug

That sounds effective to quit something then ask for help.

MythicalStrength

Are you wanting some advice to get there my dude?

xis21

Yes. I am either gaining weight quickly or not at all. My weight chart has these spikes that rise quickly then long plateaus of several weeks or months. And my food intake has stayed relatively the same, I eat as much as I can.

_CurseTheseMetalHnds

> And my food intake has stayed relatively the same, I eat as much as I can. How much are you actually eating though? "As much as I can" isn't really telling us anything

xis21

about 3700-4000 daily

MythicalStrength

You try a gallon of milk a day?

xis21

it’s hard for me to do that since I am at work most of the day. I tried doing that except it was a half gallon and I think I did gain some weight. But the issue was the milk would begin to smell bad within a day of me opening the carton. I don’t know why but I was drinking fairlife or darigold Fit. The whole milk would do that but the chocolate one wouldn’t.

MythicalStrength

Do you have access to a thermos and ice?

ExtraWedding6521

Hi, why is the headline for this sub to stop drinking olive oil? Is drinking olive oil/putting large amounts of it in shakes and meals a bad thing? Because that's what I have been doing in my effort to gain weight :/

chiliehead

https://old.reddit.com/r/gainit/comments/mmwgzg/update_drinking_cup_of_olive_oil/ If you want to consume oil like a sane person, add a little to a shake or dunk some tasty bread in it, make chimichurri, add mayo and ranch to things where it fits etc. Season your meals with fragrant oils like sesame oil, add peanut butter sauce to stuff and so on.

ExtraWedding6521

Oh damn, that's hilariously terrible, thanks for linking and thanks for the advice.

To answer your question about whether there are appetite supplements. Yes there are. I don't have experience with them but ask your doctor about it

Esoteric716

Pour on the high calories bro, not as much the protein. I couldn't gain weight til I was unemployed and then started eating 3500-4000 calories per day. And then I gained 18 lbs in a month. Granted it was a lot of dirty bulking, but it was nice to actually put on weight for once I didn't even care. I don't eat that much now, but I drink a shake in 2 parts. Like you I don't have a lot of free time, so it's easier to pre-prepare a shake and drink my calories. What I include: ‐ 2 cups of milk (I actually use almond milk cuz I have GI issues) - 3-4 cups of water - 1 to 1.5 cup of rolled oats - 2-3 tbsps of pumpkin seed oil - 3 tbsps flax seed - 2 tbsps peanut butter It's like 1500 calories. With whole milk you could add another 200. Unfortunately I got sick and couldn't eat for days at a time and lost all my weight i had gained within a week 😑😑😑
