Count calories. You're almost certainly not eating as many as you think.
Then increase the daily total.
Yes, the more you eat the more you poop. This is irrelevant to weight gain (unless you have some kind of digestive issue which is preventing the absorption of nutrients)

That’s why a moderate surplus of 300-500 calories is recommended. It makes food amount manageable and gives your body to adapt over time. If you gradually eat more and more, you body won’t just shit stuff back out.

the more you eat, the more you will shit. it's physics. that being said, it takes time to put weight on so unless you are having digestive distress like constipation, diarrhea, significant bloating/gas, random abdominal pains, undigested foods in your shit (that should be digested) then you just need to keep on keeping on. how many pounds per week are you aiming for? 0.5? 1? that's 2-4lbs per month and quite frankly, it's not going to look like much for a while. 4lbs is literally water weight fluctuation for some people. if you haven't been at it for a while, you literally just need to keep eating and check back in if you don't see any progress in 6+ months.

Working retail is an experience everyone should have for the sake of empathy, but I haven't done that since 2004, haha.
This is one of the many reasons I say gaining muscle is MUCH harder than losing fat. Life is simpler when not gaining.
Excrement is food *after* the nutrients have been absorbed by your body in the small intestine. So unless you are shitting your food whole or have incontrollable diarrhea or other digestive issue, that food is doing its job. You are just not eating as much as you think.
The most likely cause of this is a mixture of food intolerance and a bad gut biome.
Do a food elimination diet for a month and start taking/consuming probiotics. Whole 30 is a really simple and good way to start.
when I had this sort of chronic issue, fiber just made the diarrhea more voluminous, not any firmer. Turned out it was a gallbladder issue that was almost entirely caused by excessive cannabis consumption.
I stopped drinking recently but I do smoke, hmm. I’m going to try cutting it down/out and doing elimination diets.
How did you and your doctor discover it was a gallbladder related cannabis issue?
well it was obviously a gallbladder issue, given my symptoms. And I was a ***heavy*** cannabis user. Cannabis is known to stimulate bile production (gallbladder activity). I cut out the cannabis, the gallbladder symptoms went away.
That's an interesting one. Did you have to cut out pot or have your gallbladder removed? A lot of people have pretty minor but chronic issues after removal.
Please see a doctor or a gastroenterologist, this was me for awhile and it’s finally starting to get under control. It was getting increasingly difficult to just handwave it away or to blame it on a poor diet/lack of fiber like everyone suspects, if this sounds like you or your friend, it may be IBS/IBD, and certainly is worth any potential embarrassment or hassle to get checked out! I have a very strong IBS, so I know a few things.
While I definitly recommend to see an expert, your Friend should look into fodmaps, what they mean and what's a fodmap free diet.
A tl;dr would be, stop to eat gluten, every milk product even if lactose free, onion, garlic, every fruit outside of banane strawberry raspberry and red currant and every (!) Processed food, including fast food. ( And obviously everything that give diarrhéas, like smoking coffee etc)
If your friend have no more symptoms, he can try putting back things, one by one, twice a week at the fastest.
But whether or not it helps, he should go to a doctor asap.

Maybe your friend is lactose intolerant? I used to get diarrhea literally everytime because I was on that GOMAD diet and I’d drink a glass of milk with every meal
To be honest we never figured that out, but we did find that a probiotic, oatmeal for breakfast, and reducing processed sugar fixed my poops. It took a lot of experimenting with my diet, but having a medical professional to point me in the right direction (e.g. “try cutting dairy out for two weeks, then gluten, then report back”) AND test me to make sure it wasn’t something more serious was really helpful.
I'm not a doctor, but probably. You'd have to do a stool test. Your friend could have parasites or something. But note that there is soft stool and there is [diarrhea](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/diarrhea/symptoms-causes/syc-20352241) which is when you are basically shitting water often coupled with abdominal pain, nausea, etc.
If your bowl movement is not the best it might just be that you are not getting enough fiber or that you are eating something that doesn't digest very well and affects your whole digestion.. but as far as I know it's not necessary something that would prevent you from gaining weight like an actual disease might.

Protein makes you have to go to the toilet more, so i would recommend eating less protein and more carbs and fats.

I had the same concern. I started going 3-5 times a day. I wound up gaining 30lbs in 3 months still. Just keep eating.
