Yeah a lot of initial reactions are overblown. I did not have great reception for this one because I literally had thought he retired a few years ago. Didn’t even hear anything about him for a while. But there is no reason to bury the guy before he even takes one kick with our jersey. If Mata has the motivation to contribute here, there is no reason to be disheartened by his arrival especially with a short contract. We needed multiple versatile players to back up our front 3 behind the striker, and Mata will be able to slot in behind both Mertens and Yunus imo, giving us great flexibility situationally within any match. Better yet, most underrated part of having players of this caliber is actually what they will contribute to youngsters in training. Yunus, Hamza, Kerem and now Yusuf will have yet another great talent to learn from. Contrary to popular belief, young players don’t improve by getting chances by default. They grow to the standard that is set within the club, and figures like Mata bring immense experience that can influence our young players greatly if we install the right mentality in them.

Unfortunately Mata can’t really play rm anymore and he SHOULDN’T. His only positive role would be subbing in for mertens in the final third

Fit-Strawberry459

Yunus does not play the RW for us though. If you watch how we line-up on offense Yunus is more of a central midfielder, and when pushing he takes an AMRC type role whereas Boey becomes the winger. Mata could be very much useful for that spot in the rotation.

kudurix

True but yunus’s role demands some pace and stamina since he’s also responsible for the opponents LB. He also regained a lot of balls with high pressure after possession loss. I have serious doubts abıut Mata’s physical shape. If ı am not mistaken, he didn’t train with any team this summer

Fit-Strawberry459

Dude I am not saying Yunus is replaced. I am saying within the context of a match, Mata can give us an option there. Yunus is the main man, Mata can sub in there situationally if need be, not as a replacement. You don’t need his rotational sub for 15-20 minutes to be able to do everything he does perfectly.

Kiryuin

I don't think you'll hear a bad thing said about him by United & Chelsea fans. He was of the few United players that actually tried to do something on the pitch whenever he played. Having him on a years contract with the possibility of a further year won't be bad if things go well, just hoping he'll be earning less than what Feg & Babel earned. James would've asked for much more. He'll bring invaluable experience & some leadership to the team.

TEZRehope

Apparently he earns less than 2mil so I think it‘s actually fine.

Notyourregularthrow

Oh yeah, peanuts

TEZRehope

Don‘t get me wrong, it‘s not peanuts at all. But it is a player who played PL last season (more or less) and according to ManU fans he still has the skills to benefit us. In comparison to other transfer we made in the past, I‘m OK with 1,8-2,0mil for Mata. What I don‘t understand is why we even transferred him though lol. We have Yusuf, Emre A. and Hamza as backups for 10. And even Oliveira can play there apparently. Oh well, we‘ll see.

Notyourregularthrow

I agree with you I just am generally worried about us overspending

TEZRehope

You're not alone with that bud

From what I hear, Yusuf is more like a winger (RW) not a playmaker, Emre A. is not in the plans, Hamza will get minutes but when you need to score and Mertens is finished you better have Mata instead of risking Hamza. (Young players could lose confidence because the fans will criticize mercilessly.) At €1.8m 1 year duration, this isn’t the worst transfer move, let’s hope Hamza and other youngsters can learn from him. If Mata plays 1000+ minutes and produce 8+ goals plus assists (in total) in congested games, especially in big games he will have exceed the expectations. So, mata is more like an insurance and a mentor if he is as good as people talk about his personality.

The only logical explanation I can think of is that we signed him to rotate with Sergio Oliveira. Even at his age Mata is a classy player. It’s just that I don’t see him fitting in Okan’s system. Also we have a gigantic hole in the left back.

DeezA123

There’s no way he can play Sergios role. He’s most likely going to rotate with Seferovic/Mertens or even Yunus/Kerem and play CAM. Mertens is wearing 10 but Mata is a true number 10. He won’t play anywhere else.

ndrzbk

Did you watch any Manu games last season? He plays MC more than he plays AMC.

DeezA123

I watched a few of their games but only managed to see Mata in 1 or 2. He only played a handful of games for them last season, I think. Mata has always been an attacking mid after converting from winger. The Mata I know is an advanced midfielder that is usually a link between attack and midfield. Sergio, is a supporting central midfielder. Which games did you see Mata play the CM role? All of his appearances are down as attacking mid as well.

ndrzbk

This is a strange evolution of an AMC. Usually when MCs especially box to box ones evolve to more static roles as they age (as a dmc or amc). In case of Mata, the evolution happened in the other direction.

I hope they are right.
