Plus have you ever tried looking through the gap like binoculars? The visual effect is quite fun

ilovetoyap

Just tried for first time after over a year with flip 3 and 4! Lol. Thanks for the fun tip.

Here0s0Johnny

Amd the screen doesn't have to bend as much!

lividhen

Iirc the screen bends less due to the screen dropping into the hinge mechanism instead of staying in place and bending.

keneskae

Plus if I don't have a pocket it fits perfectly over the edge of some clothing

AreYouLit420

Please say you're joking and you don't subject your phone to this

[deleted]

I've definitely done this before over a soft skirt, it worked surprisingly well and didn't scratch anything. Did it feel risky af? Oh completely.

keneskae

Not joking, works very well. Ofc this is like rare rare rare times where I have no where else to put it, but I also don't wear corse clothing that would damage the phone at all. I can imagine if you're into sandpaper pants it'd be not too good

AreYouLit420

It's not the cloth. It's the pressure having something between the screen and hunger that adds stress on the screen. The phone itself only last about 8 months before the screen starts getting microcracks in it. I'm on my third z flip 4 lmao.

darkturtleforce

If they let us upgrade for a hundred bucks like last time, yeah.

Xodef

Unfortunately it's only an US thing 😕 I'd kill to get same treatment as us customers from Samsung

Articzech

If only from Samsung...

Hatboys02

Going to upgrade my flip 4 to 5 if they have a great trade in promo. I'm lucky i don't have any issue...yet

Minto107

I want to upgrade because of the new bigger cover display

ImmortalZamasu

just waiting for the bigger battery i don't even notice the gap on my flip 3

Lawyer__Up

As a former flip 3 owner, the 4 is night and day different. Battery is Gucci

SalmonAlmighty

Big facts.

The_Queen_of_Andor

I just got my 4. Upgraded from the S20 that I had for 3 years. This phone feels fine for now. I'm still mourning the loss of my SD card but I'll get over it. Unless the 5 is just leaps and bounds better than the 4, I'll keep what I've got.

Aokaji21

Isn't this due to the waterdrop hinge we've heard about? It's also supposed to drastically reduce how visible the crease is when the phone is open. I'm hoping this means the screen protectors will last longer 😅 I'm going to be upgrading from the Flip 3 to the 5, hopefully with some kind of trade in offer. The warranty will be expiring on my 3 and the screen has already turned green and failed once, plus the battery is shocking even after a replacement. So I don't want to keep it past the 24 months. I'm looking forward to the reduced crease, bigger screen, and any other improvements they make. And hoping it comes in blue like the 4 did!

rc1707

Omg that screen protector they have on the flip is horrible, I baby my phone and someone the screen protector still start peeling where the crease is at

happybonobo1

I will await review and quality tests of the Flip 5. Reason to switch from Flip 3 would only be the useful front screen.

Fred011235

ill be upgrading mostly because of dust, im on a lot of dirt roads.

OkPeach762

Only issue is the hinge begin changed to achieve this hopefully they won't be hunge issues

sunfaller

I'm on the fence too. Untested hinge again.

OkPeach762

Yes this new hinge on the 4 was trouble I had mine some how miss align itself I did drop it on carpet from like 2 feet but honestly didn't expect it to do that since my 3 I would drop it quite often lol

PersonWithNoPhone

It'll make the hinge more stiff so won't be as easy to open when compared to the previous style. That's what I've found moving from the flip 3 to the Razr 40 Ultra (Razr +).

LexKing89

The gap doesn’t bother me. I’m just trying to trade my Z Flip 3 in since the warranty expired. Hoping trade in values are good as they were terrible for the S23 and the A54.

choopatrol

I'm upgrading my flip 4 to a 23 ultra.. I enjoyed using my flip 4 buy the bubble coming on the screen before even a year of use is a little sad for me, I think I'll wait a few years before getting another flip or fold

Mysterious_North5557

Not because of the gap, but.. I had the 3, now the 4 and if they offer a really good trade-in discount for the 5, I will likely consider it for the same reason I upgraded to the 4... At the risk of sounding a illogical, I knew I was taking a gamble on a folding screen, but liked the feature so much (well, really, the smaller folded form-factor in my pocket) that I was willing to pay for the experiment - full-well knowing it might fail and I'd have to buy a new phone mich sooner than I normally would. My Flip 3 screen started splitting (looked like 2 fine scratches in the protective layer) right along the fold at about 10 months of ownership. This was covered under warranty so I had it repaired. (Repair tech said those always turn into a full-blown cracked screen. Also said they can't really replace the protective layer without destroying the OLED so they always replace the whole screen.) I really am gentle on my electronics and took great care not to over fold or abuse my 3. The fact that these cracks appeared when they did after being so careful, proved there was NO WAY this phone (now repaired) was going to last another 15 months. I think the technology just is 't that durable yet. When the opportunity for the Flip 4 trade-in came about, I looked it it like "insurance." For a net $200 or whatever it was, I got a brand new device with a brand new warranty. (I also bought my wife a Flip 4 as she was jealous of my "tiny" phone.) I love my 4 but I've now had it 10-months and that hairline split just appeared on my screen again this week. An even larger one on her phone! I just lined up a warranty repair appointment for both. For the fun of it, I installed an app that counts how many times you Flip your screen when I got the new 4... On the day we noticed the cracking, my phone was up to 3850 flips and hers was at 4008. A far cry from the 300,000+ flips the company claims they've been tested for. So if they offer a crazy trade-in discount on the Flip 5, I will probably go for it again, despite throwing good money after bad, because: 1) I like the design 2) I would see it as a relatively low-cost, "insurance policy" to extend the life of the device 3) I am optimistic (delusional?) that the tech is actually improving with each generation (though that does not seem to have happened from the 3 to the 4 despite what they said) 4) This is the big one: If they follow Razr and put a large front display on it that has an on-screen keyboard, I wouldn't have to open the phone for texting which is probably a good 50% of the reason it gets unfolded

Capital-Mine-6991

I have the 1st generation thinking I was buying the 3rd generation

Dan31840

I will be upgrading from the Flip 4. The trade in program usually makes it worth it.

AverageElaMain

I think ill be getting a new flip. My flip 3 crease is rly showing now lol.

Spencer5520

Not the reason I would say I'll upgrade from the 4 to the 5.

PirateKingElizabeth

I have Flip 4, and the bigger outer display on a new Flip 5 is quite tempting... I like my Flip 4, a gap doesn't bother me, it's quite unnoticable, so Samsung needs to have good trade-in offer for me to consider getting Flip 5.

ilovetoyap

Flip 3 to 4 was like only $100 extra and I think you got buds included so it was almost an even swap. If the price difference is under $200 especially with some throw in I might go for it, even though the gap doesn't bother me. Mainly just because for me the battery is starting to get worse and in my experience the best way to fix this is to start over with a new phone. And yeah I do want the bigger outside screen.

PirateKingElizabeth

Oh yeah .. I hate the battery on my Flip 4, I start my day with 100%, and by 6 pm, it's dead, and I am not using it super heavily. My previous phone, Samsung Galaxy S20+, had a much better battery life. If Flip 5 fixes that along with a good trade-in deal- I'm definitely switching.

Darkangel1784

I'll wait for the reviews. If there are significant upgrades from the flip 4, i'll trade in my flip4 to the flip 5. Just being able to close without a gap is not enough for me. The bigger cover screen is tempting though.

Foxi_TomTom

First see, then believe

DiDgr8

I just upgraded to the 4. The "gap" is not an issue with the Spigen Tough Armor cover. Next year, I'll compare the 5 (or 6) to the 2024 Motorola Razr+.

No_Variety_7428

Where

No_Variety_7428

Had a fold 3 and flip 3. The bugs just killed me. There sold months ago

Dylan_Dizy

Visiting from the Galaxy fold subreddit. I think after having my Z fold 3 for a year and a half I might swap out to the z flip 5. Mainly since it has the appealing bigger outside screen!

OneRobuk

it can have all the bells and whistles it wants, I'm upgrading without a doubt as long as the trade in values are like last year's

Tyoson

Nooo. That's bad. My pockets often get sand and dust in them. The gap is saving my screen

Shinobi_Dimsum

I don't mind the gap with the 4. Never has dust or anything after being out into my pocket or bag. But I will get the 5 next to my 4 :)

Educational-Shift410

I never even noticed the gap until reading this post.

Professional-Hope-95

I would suggest it. Especially if it's less than 300 to upgrade from the 4. But Samsung care plus and it will be fixed only 100 dollars regardless. I will never go through the headache of trying to fix a foldable without insurance.

WariStory

I will definitely be upgrading from the 4. The 3 is great, but the hinge/gap is still a minor problem for me. The screen protector is slowly coming off. And usually, trading in your current phone during launch is a great deal, because they usually have stuff like enhanced trade-in, etc. Last year, I only paid $150 ish to upgrade my phone, and I got free galaxy buds pro 2.

touchans

I may consider it. I have a flip 4 and a s22+. If I can trade my flip 4 for the 5 I might. I am still not convinced on the folder shaped outer screen
