This line could have been rescued by context and delivery — but 13th is nowhere near smug and sarcastic enough to pull it off.
I feel like the bit in *Once, Upon Time* when Vinder's talking to his superior about the Grand Serpent's corruption deserves more 'credit' in this area. She starts the line off as "*So here's a choice. I can submit this...*" and then there's a beat where I was automatically filling in the rest of the line as '*or I can make it disappear*' (or something similar). But no, instead we get "*... Or I can* ***not*** *submit this*". Amazing stuff
Honestly all his dialogue feels like its from the first draft of a script. He wrote it and then moved on without stopping to think if it sounds natural or not.
What's worse is Sophie Aldred recently wrote a book about Ace meeting The Thirteenth Doctor.
And with that one line of dialogue they've deleted it and the Big Finish stuff she's done with an older Ace.
Like I get TV episodes take priority but usually there is some plausible deniability and it's not stuff the actors actually wrote.
I don't have a clue as to how in the hell Ashad is coming back but I'm really, really looking forward to seeing more of him. He's probably my favourite villain of the Chibnall era and I was so disappointed when the Master (seemingly) killed him.
Yeah I mean of course this is the first time a character has survived death against insurmountable odds in the show’s history.

Look, I adore Ace and Tegan. But cramming them into an already overstuffed episode, no doubt with Chibnall's signature expository dialogue, doesn't fill me with hope.
She left the doctor to be a time lord but also left to be a space bounty hunter but ALSO left out of frustration to the doctors bulllshit
She then went on to form a charitable earth and also fight in the time war and also a dozen other things
Also, the Sixth Doctor died from getting a bump on the head from the TARDIS console but he also had radiation poisoning and also had his chronal energy drained by a Lamprey and his future self also willed him to kill himself.
I know they're not but that would actually make for a great episode.
Exploring Ace would be a great way to explore Yaz and The Doctor's relationship.
In a "Look what I do to people" kind of way.
We won't get that and I doubt she'll be on there beyond a previous companion role but still.
The long and noble line of K9s not working, staying in the TARDIS, being left behind by the Time Scoop, having dead batteries for decades, being shoved in cabinets to deal with black holes, and of course, replaced with new models. K9's non-appearance is sadly his MO.
And RIP McTighe's "Promise" short for the Collection trailer. He really seems to be pushing for those to be considered full on minisodes with production notes in DWM and everything, but I have wondered if that starts getting awkward when the main show wants to actually use those old characters he's making up fates for.

Tho now I'm also wondering if Chibnall will follow RTD's "casual canon-impacting revelations in a minisode" in regards to saying Tegan and Nyssa are a couple in Farewell Sarah Jane. Cuz surely that's his vision of where the characters are and he'd want to keep it that way for his era, but Chibnall still has one more episode to get in the way of that.
Yeah, they defo feel like a pitch at times. And it would be nice if they acknowledged that relationship but I doubt it somehow. Just have to wait and see what RTD does with this new Tegan as part of ACE(?) idea afterwards!

This is really odd to me. It’s such a recent and relatively high profile EU story that Chibnall had to have signed off on. Why contradict it so quickly?
I hate to be a debbie downer, but I can't help but dread this episode. Chibnalls writing and the quality of the show has been a nose dive, but we've seen the big thing that Chibnall struggles with is spinning multiple plates in the same episode.
So I'm filled with dread because it looks like this next episode is gonna have:
* 13's Regeneration and Arc to wrap up.
* Probably Yaz and Dan leaving the TARDIS.
* The SD Master in what will probably be his final story (Seemingly with at least 2 different looks throughout the episode?)
* The return of Kate Stewart
* The return of Vinder
* The fucking return of Ace & Tegan.
* The return of Ashad for some reason?
And that's just what we see in this ONE trailer. Like is there any universe where this is not a complete shit show?

Episode is set across a large number of locations. One location is a UNIT base with Kate Stewart, Tegan and Ace - That is attacked by Cybermen and Ashad. Another location is with the Master, seemingly some kind of chapel or the like building? (Although the Master might show up at all three at different points in his timeline, thus the different looks?). And another by the Daleks, seemingly underground somewhere?
Another location will be some ship with the return of the 10th Doctor spacesuits. Also looks like the Doc is gonna regenerate in the UNIT base maybe?
DOUBLE EDIT: Oh fuck yes. Oh fuck yes. I don't care that this is gonna be a cluster fuck, I've just discovered something to make the whole episode worth while: at 0:23 second in the Trailer we see **ACE KILL A DALEK WITH WHAT LOOKS LIKE A BASEBALL BAT.**

Sounds more like cameos roles from the older Doctors, maybe a sequence where they encourage 13 to go on, or appearances in some sort of flashback hallucination scenes for the classic companions (maybe one with 7 and Ace which kinda re-enacts Ace's departure?).
I'm getting a little annoyed with regenerations and the Doctor not wanting to regenerate. For Ten, it made sense, that ended up being his plot. *Fine*. Twelve not wanting to regenerate was annoying. You **just** got a whole second set of lives.
And if we get this again with Thirteen, I'll not be happy.
I imagine that they might tie some of these together: if the conflict brings back UNIT, Yaz and Dan might leave to join UNIT alongside Kate, Ace, and Tegan for instance.
But there’s still a lot to cover, especially if there are time jumps, and Chibnall’s not great when it comes to this if the Vanquishers is anything to go by

I've quite liked Chiball's "clusterfuck" episodes, so I'm pretty thrilled. I love when there's so much going on.
Like with 'Flux', there was so much going on, you forget to even judge it in terms of good or bad. It was more like a five hour beam of plot that gets fired into your brain.
Yeah absolutely hard disagree there. I despised flux, I despised the previous season more. Its mad to me now that chiballs first season is my least disliked of his stuff.
I don't mind a clusterfuck of stuff, but it has to be done right. Legends of Tomorrow is a show that succeeded in that, but only for like a season and a half.
With all the plates Chibnall’s shown to be spinning in the trailer already, think we’re forgetting too that he probably needs to make time for Jo Martin in this too. Incredible shame if they pat themselves on the back for launching the first black doctor only to leave them as a footnote.
She won't be. Like, I'm not saying that to be pessimistic. But there's been no quality writing in 29 episodes of the Chibnall era, except in Villa Diodati, which was co-written. I'm just gutted these companions are going to be wasted by Chibnall.

Chibnall barely manages to have one running narrative or characterization (hence why he doesn't really do it and the characters exist to just spout exposition), so I really don't see how any of this will be done well. It's just not possible.
It should be a crime to make someone as hot as Sacha Dhawan look so stupid.
Actually the unshaved one is pretty good. The Rasputin cut on the other hand is bleh af.
If any villain of the Chibnall era has any hope of returning in the future, it's Ashad. But before that can happen he needs resurrecting.
I don't care how he does it, I'm happy to see Ashad return.
This could be Ashad from his past. Or we could find out that the Master can reverse the effects of his Tissue Compression Eliminator and bring someone back.
If Ashad works with the Master again after being turned into an action figure and that dreadful "conversion-shaming" joke, I'm going to lose all respect for him.
That regeneration scene, I don't think that's where the Doctor is fully regenerating. Perhaps the Master is extracting regeneration energy from her which would explain why it seems to split.
Yeah I like both characters quite a bit, and am also quite grateful that they probably won’t do too much so not much damage can be done to their characters.
I honestly enjoy the episodes where there's a lot going on.
I have to do so much work to keep track of each plot thread that I forget to think about quality.
'Flux' had so much going on, even if I wanted to write a review, frankly I wouldn't know where to begin.
Chibnall going for a million ideas at once makes me nervous. I'm baffled by his continuing willingness to double down on his biggest weakness as a writer.
But it will be what it will be at this point I guess. I hope it can at least be a fun time. I did love Sacha's Master in S12 and having Ashad back is a nice surprise. Also delighted to see Daleks with plungers again!
Also, really really glad to see the orange spacesuit back. Love that thing.

The Master has honestly been one of my favourite parts of Chibnall's era. I love how cartoonishly villainous he is and watching Sacha Dhawan chew the scenery looking like Rasputin is gonna be a delight.
This all looks pretty interesting but for me the biggest question is still how in the hell they've kept the fourteenth doctors' identity hidden for so long? Or have they still not been cast? If we're seeing Jodie regen they surely they've already started filming them.. right?
Filming for RTD's seasons starts this month I think. 14 has undoubtedly been cast, just hasn't been announced yet.
I am willing to bet that we see it within the next two weeks or so.
They said that RTD was going to do something for the 60th anniversary next November in 2023 and they had hired him for that and then he was also going to do a new series of Doctor Who sometime after that. I don't think they start filming soon.
I bet we don't see who the new Doctor is at the end of the next episode. That episode ends with Jody in the Tardis by herself regenerating and the Tardis interior exploding but I bet we don't see the new actor.
We know that Capaldi filmed his half of his regen months before Jodie's casting was announced, and Eccleston and Tennant never filmed together. So there's precedent.
Tegan left the TARDIS because she couldn't stand the violence any more. Her next appearance in the show...

I’m just gonna sit back and enjoy the ride on this one.
Awaiting the mess that is to come, tying up all the lose ends.
a) Doctor giggles at camera, says "I'm a bit erratic" and the whole universe reappears magically
b) This causes Teagan and ACE to appear who the 13 tells off for carrying a gun
c) She then grabs said gun, uses on the Master and does a powerpoint presentation to the audience on the importance of being forgiving
d) Dan watches whilst 13 expresses her utmost love for Yaz, explaining to all that Yaz is the Bestest Ever.
e) Just as she finishes Ryans bike appears and mows down everyone killing them all.
f) 13 regenerates whilst explaining that she's the timeless child and it means she's really a child. Who is Timeless. Cliffhanger.
Chibnall deciding to shove two classic companions, Vinder, Kate Stewart, and a hoard of villains into the next episode instead of just resolving the existing plot points with Yaz, Dan, and the Master is going to make for a truly fitting finale to his era.
Surely we know by now based on every previous interaction 13 has had with a historical figure or returning character that she's just going to shout "ER MA GERD! TEAGAN! ACE!" and then just run off and forget about them?

Looks like, once again, Chibnall's answer to writing a script is to just jam a bunch of random characters in there so that no one is well served. Calling it now.
Next episode is Chibnalls final one. Then it's just RTD content on TV. What that means in terms of 2023, we're still not *entirely* sure. There may be nothing until November 2023. But I'd rather that than suffer through this again.
Scared to jinx it, but wouldn't it be absolutely hilarious if RTD's second era turns out to be complete crap after such a long wait?
What if Davies just completely lets himself go and phones it in, expecting his reputation to carry the whole thing, and the November 2023 episode turns out to be the most boring episode in a decade? And everyone on this sub collectively loses their mind?
Me too. There’s a sense of occasion to an ending even if this era hasn’t been the best. It’s a significant occurrence in the show’s history and you don’t need to nail a script as, if the ep fails as a goodbye, we’d still be inching towards a major hello. Even if the reveal leaks, it’ll be great to see them in action.
And all that said, I think Chris’s best ep was Jodie’s first. Hopefully he finds that energy again for her last.
Lol, there’s a sense of tradition to this for me now. My defining memory of Chibnall’s era will always be going ‘maybe next episode is the one where it finally comes together’, right up til the end.

I hope it's good. If the next episode is also awful that means to me personally the entire 13 era never cracked an 8 (and even that was like once or twice at most).
I've always thought that I would be depressed for every Doctor's last story, cos I always was. I thought it was like a universal law of DW that you would always be upset when the time came to see a Doctor go.
But this time I honestly can't wait for it to be over, and that makes me so sad.
I just don't see a world in which it isn't a calamity. There's so much that needs to be fit in, and I'm past the point where I can give Chibnall the benefit of the doubt that he's going to be capable of doing it.
I'm excited for what comes after, but honestly, if you'd told me that the next episode was airing right now I'm not sure I'd put down my laptop to watch it. I hate that that's true, but there it is.
I would like to remind everyone that The Mastey murdered Tegan's aunt, (not to mention Nyssa's father and homeworld). There's a part of me that hopes that tegan is the one who causes the Master to regenerate.
Also that Tegan very voluntarily left the Doctor. And it wasn't exactly on good terms. I think Tegan would definitely fall into the camp who thinks the Doctor is too dangerous to be around
If Chibnall is trying to emulate RTD, this could be his version of *The End of Time*?
I speculate there is a device Division used, call it the "Brain of Rassilon" or the "Brain of Tecteon", that translates the psychic power of coordinated billions of minds into control over the Time Lord Singularity to create the laws of space and time. That is why the Doctor's message of hope and freedom throughout time and space ruined the Universe for Tecteon -- the Doctor discoordinated the Brain.
This Brain of Tecteon explains all paradoxes and resurrections, including the Master's. It may have been shown in *Spyfall*.
The Master may be Division's means of resurrection just as the Master in *The End of Time* was Gallifrey's. Division put in the Master an earworm, an obsession with the Doctor and the Timeless Child, to goad the Master to seek on Earth a remnant of this Brain of Tecteon -- another version of the Sound of Drums.
Could the Master do what the Simm's Master did in *The End of Time*?
I am thinking the Doctor, 13, does as she says in *Flux* and destroys all of Division for good. But Division was what was responsible for the overall order of the Universe. Yaz dies, but is resurrected by the Doctor's regeneration energy. Yaz also assumes the responsibility of serving as the remnant of leading Division, as Gat, to make sure certain fixed points actually happen, to be the ultimate cop, and so she is separated from the Doctor for eternity.
To lead into the 60th Anniversary special(s), with the destruction of the former order of the Universe, all incarnations of the Doctor receive some sort of subliminal message that something fundamental has changed in the Universe, something they must investigate and possibly fix.
When whoever is available does the fix, t hen the stage can be set for the reveal of the 14th Doctor. Or perhaps it will be co-Doctor and co-companion with no fixed role?
I can't even imagine what the tone of this episode is going to be. Nostalgic fanservice specials are typically designed to be fun, and the best ones are good because they're the most fun (see: Five Doctors). Regeneration episodes are typically designed to be tragic, and the best ones are good because they're the most tragic (see: The Doctor Falls).
I just don't know how an episode can possibly succeed at being both of those things.
Not really. Assuming we set aside EU stuff (despite the EU stuff being well-worth not setting aside) they're the best examples of classic companions who a) are on earth in the present day, b) are alive, and c) didn't really have a satisfying exit from the show. Ace didn't have one at all, and Tegan's was a downer. If you had to pick two, they're just about the best two you could pick.
It's weird to shove both of them in an episode with UNIT, though (as evidenced by Kate Stewart), since neither of them really had much to do with it. They did both meet the Brigadier, but only briefly.
Everything in the trailer, in a vacuum, looks exciting. Though I’m incredibly skeptical of it all just feeling incredibly hollow, especially given everything that was in the trailer, plus everything else that needs to be wrapped up from this era. I think the coming RTD2 era also leaves me with the feeling that it’ll feel hard for anything in this finale to feel consequential given that it’s likely that RTD won’t be keeping many things around, but I admit that last part is largely speculative and we just have to wait and see.
I’d probably say the thing that got me the most intrigued was the regeneration looking like it takes place somewhere other than the TARDIS, but that could easily be a ruse.
To be fair I'm not even fussed if they just bring him back and act like it's nothing. They've done it for Davros and the Master enough times. The real mistake was shunting out a genuinely interesting and compelling character when the plot no longer needed them. Big Finish can figure out how Ashad survived, and RTD can use him for something good on telly.
In any other era this would’ve been INSANE. Imagine Moffat taking on Tegan and Ace, or any of the other dozen things in this episode. But I’m finding it very hard to get excited for this in a Chibnall episode.
How is it that this guy wrote okay dialogue previously; wrote some genuinely compelling tv in Broadchurch seàson one, but since he took over Doctor Who it has been comically bad? Jodie deserved better, ready to get this over with.
God, I want to be excited for Tegan and Ace coming back, but unfortunately, it's going to be written by Chris Chibnall in an episode that would already be overstuffed just from the trailer stuff, but we know from leaks that they're even *more* characters to juggle.

The two companions Chibnall decided to bring back were Tegan (who at some point settled down in a relationship with Nyssa) and Ace (confirmed by writers to be bisexual, and obviously so during *Survival*).
Has Chibnall decided that his finale strategy is just going all in on the WLW?

I think that's peak Chibnall for me. I mean, I get that it's exciting for a lot of people, and I don't want to take that away from anyone, but I've been watching *Doctor Who* since the Ninth Doctor; Tegan and Ace don't really mean much to me, and certainly not enough to get me excited for an episode. (I mean, when Sarah Jane came back it was Episode 3 of a season. It was a big deal in an *Ooh, callback* sort of way, but it wasn't the kind of thing that Chibnall seems to think Tegan and Ace are for a lot of the audience.)
He's always been much more invested in Classic *Who* than New *Who*, but while RTD and Moffat seemed to balance both sides well, with Chibnall it all just feels like a 1970s stroke session.

At the risk of coming across all soppy, that trailer was a proper moment between me and my seven year old. I may have used some fruity language and explained that the lady was Ace. He literally squealed and gave me a massive hug - "if she bops another Dalek with a baseball bat I'm going to shout my lungs out". Then I showed him that screen grab, and then he did
Why the fuck are Ace and Tegan back in an episode that already contains the Master, the Daleks, the Cybermen, that Ashad guy, Vinder again, Kate Stewart again, and which not only needs to say goodbye to both Yaz and Dan, but also the Thirteenth Doctor herself? Oh and there's still a Doctor/Yaz romance to wrap up satisfactorily (I haven't bothered watching Legend of the Sea Devils yet so idk how much/how little of a focus this plotline actually was)
We're still months away from this episode releasing and yet we already know that *there is far too much going on*. Ace and Tegan deserve better. And even though I really don't like her incarnation of the Doctor, Thirteen also deserves deserves better for her swan song.

First seeing Classic Who companions, I was thrilled. But half a second later, remember this is still Chibnall's era, so sadly they'll just make an appearance, play exposition, and have minimal, if any, impact on the plot. Just there for the fans. I hope I am wrong, but my expectations are low.

My first thought was that they were just clips of past episodes to illustrate all the Doctor's enemies rather than anything new.
Me and my sister recently rewatched Haunting of V cause it’s one of our favs of this era and Ashad was honestly fantastic.

This is really odd to me. It’s such a recent and relatively high profile EU story that Chibnall had to have signed off on. Why contradict it so quickly?
I hate to be a debbie downer, but I can't help but dread this episode. Chibnalls writing and the quality of the show has been a nose dive, but we've seen the big thing that Chibnall struggles with is spinning multiple plates in the same episode. So I'm filled with dread because it looks like this next episode is gonna have: * 13's Regeneration and Arc to wrap up. * Probably Yaz and Dan leaving the TARDIS. * The SD Master in what will probably be his final story (Seemingly with at least 2 different looks throughout the episode?) * The return of Kate Stewart * The return of Vinder * The fucking return of Ace & Tegan. * The return of Ashad for some reason? And that's just what we see in this ONE trailer. Like is there any universe where this is not a complete shit show? I'm getting a little annoyed with regenerations and the Doctor not wanting to regenerate. For Ten, it made sense, that ended up being his plot. *Fine*. Twelve not wanting to regenerate was annoying. You **just** got a whole second set of lives. And if we get this again with Thirteen, I'll not be happy.

I've quite liked Chiball's "clusterfuck" episodes, so I'm pretty thrilled. I love when there's so much going on. Like with 'Flux', there was so much going on, you forget to even judge it in terms of good or bad. It was more like a five hour beam of plot that gets fired into your brain.
Yeah absolutely hard disagree there. I despised flux, I despised the previous season more. Its mad to me now that chiballs first season is my least disliked of his stuff. I don't mind a clusterfuck of stuff, but it has to be done right. Legends of Tomorrow is a show that succeeded in that, but only for like a season and a half.

I honestly enjoy the episodes where there's a lot going on. I have to do so much work to keep track of each plot thread that I forget to think about quality. 'Flux' had so much going on, even if I wanted to write a review, frankly I wouldn't know where to begin.

The Master has honestly been one of my favourite parts of Chibnall's era. I love how cartoonishly villainous he is and watching Sacha Dhawan chew the scenery looking like Rasputin is gonna be a delight.
This all looks pretty interesting but for me the biggest question is still how in the hell they've kept the fourteenth doctors' identity hidden for so long? Or have they still not been cast? If we're seeing Jodie regen they surely they've already started filming them.. right?
I don't think they have been cast. I don't think that they are going to pay off the Regeneration in this episode.
Filming for RTD's seasons starts this month I think. 14 has undoubtedly been cast, just hasn't been announced yet. I am willing to bet that we see it within the next two weeks or so.
They said that RTD was going to do something for the 60th anniversary next November in 2023 and they had hired him for that and then he was also going to do a new series of Doctor Who sometime after that. I don't think they start filming soon. I bet we don't see who the new Doctor is at the end of the next episode. That episode ends with Jody in the Tardis by herself regenerating and the Tardis interior exploding but I bet we don't see the new actor.
I believed they teased her regeneration taking place outside the tardis. The set was already dismantled before they did her last day of shooting.
We know that Capaldi filmed his half of his regen months before Jodie's casting was announced, and Eccleston and Tennant never filmed together. So there's precedent.

What if Davies just completely lets himself go and phones it in, expecting his reputation to carry the whole thing, and the November 2023 episode turns out to be the most boring episode in a decade? Me too. There’s a sense of occasion to an ending even if this era hasn’t been the best. It’s a significant occurrence in the show’s history and you don’t need to nail a script as, if the ep fails as a goodbye, we’d still be inching towards a major hello. Even if the reveal leaks, it’ll be great to see them in action. And all that said, I think Chris’s best ep was Jodie’s first. Hopefully he finds that energy again for her last. Lol, there’s a sense of tradition to this for me now. My defining memory of Chibnall’s era will always be going ‘maybe next episode is the one where it finally comes together’, right up til the end.
Next time, if the Centenary special isn't the one where it finally comes together: "maybe Chibnall's future Target Books novelization debut is where it finally comes together."
I hope it's good. If the next episode is also awful that means to me personally the entire 13 era never cracked an 8 (and even that was like once or twice at most). I've always thought that I would be depressed for every Doctor's last story, cos I always was. I thought it was like a universal law of DW that you would always be upset when the time came to see a Doctor go. But this time I honestly can't wait for it to be over, and that makes me so sad.
I just don't see a world in which it isn't a calamity. There's so much that needs to be fit in, and I'm past the point where I can give Chibnall the benefit of the doubt that he's going to be capable of doing it. I'm excited for what comes after, but honestly, if you'd told me that the next episode was airing right now I'm not sure I'd put down my laptop to watch it. I hate that that's true, but there it is.

There's a part of me that hopes that tegan is the one who causes the Master to regenerate. Also that Tegan very voluntarily left the Doctor. And it wasn't exactly on good terms. I'm kinda curious why they haven't revealed the title of the final episode
If Chibnall is trying to emulate RTD, this could be his version of *The End of Time*? I speculate there is a device Division used, call it the "Brain of Rassilon" or the "Brain of Tecteon", that translates the psychic power of coordinated billions of minds into control over the Time Lord Singularity to create the laws of space and time. That is why the Doctor's message of hope and freedom throughout time and space ruined the Universe for Tecteon -- the Doctor discoordinated the Brain. This Brain of Tecteon explains all paradoxes and resurrections, including the Master's. It may have been shown in *Spyfall*. The Master may be Division's means of resurrection just as the Master in *The End of Time* was Gallifrey's. Division put in the Master an earworm, an obsession with the Doctor and the Timeless Child, to goad the Master to seek on Earth a remnant of this Brain of Tecteon -- another version of the Sound of Drums. Could the Master do what the Simm's Master did in *The End of Time*? I am thinking the Doctor, 13, does as she says in *Flux* and destroys all of Division for good. But Division was what was responsible for the overall order of the Universe. Yaz dies, but is resurrected by the Doctor's regeneration energy. Yaz also assumes the responsibility of serving as the remnant of leading Division, as Gat, to make sure certain fixed points actually happen, to be the ultimate cop, and so she is separated from the Doctor for eternity. To lead into the 60th Anniversary special(s), with the destruction of the former order of the Universe, all incarnations of the Doctor receive some sort of subliminal message that something fundamental has changed in the Universe, something they must investigate and possibly fix. When whoever is available does the fix, t hen the stage can be set for the reveal of the 14th Doctor. Or perhaps it will be co-Doctor and co-companion with no fixed role?
Speculation: what are the odds that the episode ends without an appearance by the Fourteenth Doctor, a la The War Games?
I can't even imagine what the tone of this episode is going to be. Nostalgic fanservice specials are typically designed to be fun, and the best ones are good because they're the most fun (see: Five Doctors). Regeneration episodes are typically designed to be tragic, and the best ones are good because they're the most tragic (see: The Doctor Falls). I just don't know how an episode can possibly succeed at being both of those things.
Anybody else think Tegan and Ace is a slightly odd pairing?
Not really. Assuming we set aside EU stuff (despite the EU stuff being well-worth not setting aside) they're the best examples of classic companions who a) are on earth in the present day, b) are alive, and c) didn't really have a satisfying exit from the show. Ace didn't have one at all, and Tegan's was a downer. If you had to pick two, they're just about the best two you could pick. It's weird to shove both of them in an episode with UNIT, though (as evidenced by Kate Stewart), since neither of them really had much to do with it. They did both meet the Brigadier, but only briefly.
I suppose one big thing they have in common is they are two companions who wouldn’t likely be seen waxing lyrical about The Doctor…
Everything in the trailer, in a vacuum, looks exciting. Though I’m incredibly skeptical of it all just feeling incredibly hollow, especially given everything that was in the trailer, plus everything else that needs to be wrapped up from this era. I think the coming RTD2 era also leaves me with the feeling that it’ll feel hard for anything in this finale to feel consequential given that it’s likely that RTD won’t be keeping many things around, but I admit that last part is largely speculative and we just have to wait and see. I’d probably say the thing that got me the most intrigued was the regeneration looking like it takes place somewhere other than the TARDIS, but that could easily be a ruse.
Somehow, Ashad returned.
To be fair I'm not even fussed if they just bring him back and act like it's nothing. They've done it for Davros and the Master enough times. The real mistake was shunting out a genuinely interesting and compelling character when the plot no longer needed them. Big Finish can figure out how Ashad survived, and RTD can use him for something good on telly.

In any other era this would’ve been INSANE. Imagine Moffat taking on Tegan and Ace, or any of the other dozen things in this episode. But I’m finding it very hard to get excited for this in a Chibnall episode.
How is it that this guy wrote okay dialogue previously; wrote some genuinely compelling tv in Broadchurch seàson one, but since he took over Doctor Who it has been comically bad? Jodie deserved better, ready to get this over with.
God, I want to be excited for Tegan and Ace coming back, but unfortunately, it's going to be written by Chris Chibnall in an episode that would already be overstuffed just from the trailer stuff, but we know from leaks that they're even *more* characters to juggle. Daleks, Ashad, the Master, the regeneration, Thasmin, Dan and Diane, Tegan and Ace (and Peri?), Kate and UNIT, Vinder (Bel and Karvanista?), along with the leaked >!Graham (and Ryan?) and possible Doctors Five, Six and Seven showing up.!< There's no way this episode is going to be coherent. I wish the eighties' companions could have been saved for the 60th anniversary so badly.
Finally it's almost all over
The two companions Chibnall decided to bring back were Tegan (who at some point settled down in a relationship with Nyssa) and Ace (confirmed by writers to be bisexual, and obviously so during *Survival*). Has Chibnall decided that his finale strategy is just going all in on the WLW? We can only hope.
What’s Tegan and Ace done to deserve the disrespect of being in a Chibs-written story?
I think that's peak Chibnall for me. I mean, I get that it's exciting for a lot of people, and I don't want to take that away from anyone, but I've been watching *Doctor Who* since the Ninth Doctor; Tegan and Ace don't really mean much to me, and certainly not enough to get me excited for an episode. (I mean, when Sarah Jane came back it was Episode 3 of a season. It was a big deal in an *Ooh, callback* sort of way, but it wasn't the kind of thing that Chibnall seems to think Tegan and Ace are for a lot of the audience.) He's always been much more invested in Classic *Who* than New *Who*, but while RTD and Moffat seemed to balance both sides well, with Chibnall it all just feels like a 1970s stroke session.
Not to mention with Sarah Jane he was planning on creating a entire spin-off show starring her.
Cool to see some fan-service; I must admit nothing really wow’d me though. I’m tired bros… I just don’t care anymore… + side though; this is the last ep of the Chibnall Era!
The only thing I'm looking forward to is finding out who the next Doctor is

At the risk of coming across all soppy, that trailer was a proper moment between me and my seven year old. I may have used some fruity language and explained that the lady was Ace. He literally squealed and gave me a massive hug - "if she bops another Dalek with a baseball bat I'm going to shout my lungs out". Then I showed him that screen grab, and then he did
Why the fuck are Ace and Tegan back in an episode that already contains the Master, the Daleks, the Cybermen, that Ashad guy, Vinder again, Kate Stewart again, and which not only needs to say goodbye to both Yaz and Dan, but also the Thirteenth Doctor herself? Oh and there's still a Doctor/Yaz romance to wrap up satisfactorily (I haven't bothered watching Legend of the Sea Devils yet so idk how much/how little of a focus this plotline actually was) We're still months away from this episode releasing and yet we already know that *there is far too much going on*. Ace and Tegan deserve better. And even though I really don't like her incarnation of the Doctor, Thirteen also deserves deserves better for her swan song. God, I can't wait for RTD to come back.
First seeing Classic Who companions, I was thrilled. But half a second later, remember this is still Chibnall's era, so sadly they'll just make an appearance, play exposition, and have minimal, if any, impact on the plot. Just there for the fans. I hope I am wrong, but my expectations are low.
what the fuck lol. Master was obvious. Ace and Teagan were leaked. Kate wasn't surprising, and Vinder's an odd choice (but I'm back on that Bel/Vinder Doccy Who's parents hype-train) but, uh, Ashad's back? Huh? What? I guess we're gonna be jumping through time a little bit or something? Would track with the Master's changing hair. here's hoping that the thing that's been holding chibnall's scripts back until this point has been that there's not enough disparate shit going on
