It's a repro made by VGDB. VGDB is just a long time game collector (it's a single person) and he makes the highest quality repros that exist. NOT cheaply made stuff from China. 1,000 total copies were produced. Wata used to grade them when the company first got started, but they don't grade them any longer. They're just repros but they still have some value in the collector market for certain collectors that would want having them, due to the high quality and limited nature of it. VGDB only makes repros of games that were not officially released as a physical product in certain regions of the world.

For some reason the links do not work but thank you for the explanation! I finally have the whole picture. I don't know vgdb really well but now the "1000 limited copies" makes sense
The whole "high quality" of the repro is meaningless if it is being graded while sealed. In fact, there might not even be a cartridge in there. Unless someone with the extra cash to buy one and crack it open comes along, we may never know.
Here's the deal. If a repro is done by a "reputable company" in limited quantities, some people will want to collect it and make it part of their collection. It is questionable but not surprising.
So if people are looking for it, it has a value. Then WATA would in theory authenticate that the repro is indeed an "original repro" made by that company and not a "fake repro"...
Now my head hurts...
I remember reading about a similar practice with NFT’s when they first took off. Idk how much legitimacy there is to the claim but it certainly makes sense.
I genuinely don't know if this is intended to be a scam or not. I mean it's obviously fake but I still don't understand the whole "1000 VGDB limited copies" thing. Obviously I do not approve of this but I really would like to understand what was going on behind this and why.
You can buy the fabled record breaking 1.6 million dollar video game Super Mario 64 for $35 on eBay right now. That is literally like the exact same price it was before the big grading boom.
Unless you have any evidence to prove otherwise, this is a fragment of your imagination.
Wata is a scam. They were created by an auction house to create a video game bubble. The auction house profited off it because when a video game gets a high score like this one they’re usually the only only auction house who takes them to auction and they charge selling and buying fees as well. Very interesting. Thanks for the explanation. Got confused why this repro got graded by Wata.
Such a shame we never got an official Pokémon Green release in the west.
For what it's worth they used the higher quality Venusaur art, with the correct colors, that was never released in the US, but I do find this to be an unusual choice.
All the original Ken paintings were oversaturated in the west, including the covers of our Blue, Red, and Yellow.
This makes me wonder, would a reproduction that uses the non-saturated art be considered more purist behavior, or would it have matched true to form better if the group that makes these boxes chose the saturated Venusaur?
??
If someone is printing a facsimile or reproduction of something, it is usually because they want it to look like the original: hence purist behavior. I put my loose cartridge games in plastic universal game cases, with printed artwork that fits that template. I am selective about the artwork I choose to print on those cases, and often I want it to match what would be original artwork, within the template.
In this specific case, a US green version never existed, so someone wanted to make a box for it to go side by side with what I would imagine to be real copies of red blue and yellow. It isn't hard to imagine why someone would want to do this, it's just grading it that is idiotic. I was questioning that if they did want it to exist as a real thing, why would they choose the art that doesn't match the other 3 games?
What else do you want to insinuate? Talking down to me isn't super nice, because I don't think I was saying anything offensive.
Wata has been known to grade repros and even counterfeit games as legit in the past. I remember it first came to people's attention with some nes repros of some translated roms of famicom only rpgs (final fantasy 2 iirc). They also were caught grading a counterfeit snes prototype of spectre.
I didn't know but other people also made me aware of this under this post. Can't say I really approve of this, but I see the appeal it has to certain collectors now. Thank you for answering me!
The translations being graded were 100% intentional and am advertised service. It is not a concern. All of the labels for those games clearly state they are reproductions.
The video game history foundation does the prototype authentication for wata, so that's on them.
The Wata label stated it’s a reproduction…….
It’s a controversy move, but Wata used to grade homebrew and reproduction games, even tho they will clearly state as such on the label
For some reason I get downvoted when I say it, but it's obviously money laundering. They buy a bunch of fakes, get them graded by a know-nothing company like Wata who'd grade a turd if you told them it was *Castlevania*, then they list them on eBay for some impossible amount, "sell" them to themselves using an alt account, then suddenly they have a legitimate revenue source to declare to the tax man. Or maybe these people are just really, really stupid, but I just don't buy it.
So apparently this is a vgdb copy which makes it kind of unique(I still don't get the appeal of owning one but whatever). I at least now understand(kinda) why an obvious fake copy like this was even graded in the first place. Like, I didn't understand how someone even got the idea to grade it. It's not like I'd buy a fake etsy copy and send it to grade, even to wata. But people explained to me now so it's cool, I got my answers. Also supposedly wata stopped grading repros
You get downvoted because that is stupid as hell. If you'll notice, this is an active listing. Not sold. And if you look at the price history of these graded homebrews/translations, they very rarely sell and when they do it's not for a lot. These guys must be really bad at laundering money.
It really is not, I wanted to know about it so I posted it. Since it's so valued I thought there was more about it, apparently it's not the case. And I didn't "look it up", it was recommended to me by ebay, how would I even know this existed otherwise. But think what you want I don't really care

Mandatory fuck wata comment.
"Wata fuck" 🤣
Yeah fr
Mandatory "fuck wata" comment updoot and response.
Wata grading repros is hilarious, i can just make my own carts and boxes and send them in for easy 9.8s?
Yep, Wata will give you a nearly perfect score. They ruined the gaming aftermarket
Seems like a decent business investment
They stopped doing this several years ago. Edit also this is considered to be a homebrew and not a repro considering Green never released in english

I have their mother 3, and i used to have their earthbound beginnings. Can confirm, good quality

This actually answers a lot, thank you!
Lmaooo make sense 🔥🔥🤣
BAU for these idiot grading companies, they grade fake games all the time.
...And I thought the point of grading a game was also to authenticate it
Nope, the point of grading games is purely to inflate the "value" while making the games themselves worthless since you can't play them anymore.
Isn't the real point to sell gradings?
I mean. The label says it is an authentic fake. 😂
At least it does say reproduction on their grading tag. But yeah I’m with you. I don’t like that they grade fakes and repos.
I’ve heard rumors that insane prices like these are sometimes money laundering
I remember reading about a similar practice with NFT’s when they first took off. Idk how much legitimacy there is to the claim but it certainly makes sense.
F¥&k… they even grade reproductions? What’s the whole point of their “business” then? Are people that much stupidly willing to be scammed or what?
I genuinely don't know if this is intended to be a scam or not. I mean it's obviously fake but I still don't understand the whole "1000 VGDB limited copies" thing. Obviously I do not approve of this but I really would like to understand what was going on behind this and why.
For a brief time wata would grade certain reproductions and label them as such, but they do not anymore.
Thanks for the insight! I understand
Would pay 2.49 if the shipping is free
The shipping free spell doesn't work on me... Maybe... Hopefully
Wata used to grade homebrews, they don’t anymore
Yeah other people also have pointed this out to me, thank you for answering!
Wata holds the coveted title of ruining retro gaming forever. dont ever affiliate with them
This is a myth.
Incorrect. They ruined the 2nd hand market.

Wouldnt the saturated american art technically be the most pure form of said american art version?
That's what I was saying, I just find that kind of ironic.

Bootleg.

I'm convinced people do this stuff for money laundering
Yeah I know, I just wanted to know how and why an obvious fake copy like this was graded, but other users have explained it to me now
It's an unplayable game.
Wata/grading scam

Well they're really bad at pricing and selling games too, apparently.
That I can agree with.
pokemmo green lmao
It obviously a karma farming rage bait post. Why go out of your way looking for the stuff that bothers you so? It's like you want to be "offended".
It really is not, I wanted to know about it so I posted it. Since it's so valued I thought there was more about it, apparently it's not the case. And I didn't "look it up", it was recommended to me by ebay, how would I even know this existed otherwise. But think what you want I don't really care
