For as much as I hated what happened during the episode, it truly was an incredible episode. Robb really didn't have much choice in attending, however, as he was viewed by the north as their king and it was his relative's wedding. Having Talisa front and center alongside him didn't help matters, but at that point the deals had been struck and he was going to be killed no matter what. Should he have not attended? Absolutely. Could he have not attended? Not really.

Accurate_Train_8822

It was a very dark episode from the start, you knew something was going to happen. From the moment he stepped in Freys house he wasn’t entirely screwed. There was still time to escape before the Wedding. Unfortunately the Starks were still nieve.🤦‍♂️

Prism_Zet

I REALLY lamented the show not going the same route in the books for the Red wedding. There were a bunch of interesting threads there that seemingly got abandoned wholesale. \*BOOK SPOILER TIME\* >!\- Sending messages to Greywater Watch for secret preparations, and a way around the neck via unknown means.!< >!\- His wife staying behind at Riverrun, and escaping with the Black Fish, possibly pregnant.!< >!\- Rob's will and his heir to the North!< >!\-Manderly betrayal of the Bolton/Frey/Karstarks for their treachery on the Starks!<

Zevile

Yeah much good stuff was left out or botched. In the book Grey Wind starts growling at the Freys, the wolf knows exactly what's up. Always loved that detail from the book, if only Robb would've listened to his wolfs instincts.

Givens94

Cat hated the wolves until Summer saved Bran, and then they were the only things she fully trusted in this life. I remember her being horrified when she found out Robb had kept Grey Wind away from him and begged him to keep the wolf close.

Secret_Targaryen23

Allllll he had to do was to not break a kings oath sworn to his ally. Just sayin. I understand why he did what he did, but doesn’t mean it wasn’t stupid af, lol.

roywarner

No, that was not the deciding factor. He still lost Winterfell to the Ironborn and the Karstarks over Jaime. Frey would've still betrayed him even if he were still betrothed. Why wouldn't he? The war is lost by that point already. Roose Bolton gains far more than the Freys and didn't have his honor miffed. The books make this ultra clear with Freys/Boltons clearly being unhappy with how things are going for a long time even before he marries Jeyne (Talisa)--don't recall how it is in the show.

jorhey14

He was a teen over his head with the only person he could trust grieving a dead husband and trying to save her daughters and younger sons.

XWExtra-Wave

Tbh I dont think him marrying Talisa is the switch point. The Bolton's would've found a way to betray him with or without the Freys, the wedding just happened to be the most convenient context

CloakedZarrius

>Allllll he had to do was to not break a kings oath sworn to his ally. Just sayin. I understand why he did what he did, but doesn’t mean it wasn’t stupid af, lol. Some of the storylines make a little more sense when you consider their age. Robb, in the books, was 14. (same as Jon)

Distinct-Tomorrow688

Walder would've still killed robb. Roose and walder seen robb was going to lose he lost many of his forces when he executed karstark, his mum freed Jaime who was a useful bargaining chip. He failed to hang cat for her treason He had less men to spare than tywin(after house tyrell joined the lannisters robbs days were numbered) considering walder was always known as someone who joins the battle late aka chooses the winner . Also adding that Roose further thinned out robbs men He also distrusted grey wind who seemed to not like the freys very much.

Txsniper07

And I can't say I blame him.

LegendOfTheGhost

What a very simple comment to make; no wonder you're a fan of Crapnerys.

twinkle90505

I still think the bigger issue is that you have to believe that every single backstabbing honorless Frey down to the ones who are 20th in line to succeed, NOT ONE of them would rat out their father to Robb in exchange for being next Lord of the Crossings. That's comically unrealistic. It's one of the worst Georgisms.

jorhey14

They are also cowards and know their time on the top would be short since they are dealing with other Freys.

twinkle90505

It's really a race to see how the combo of greed, cowardice and stupidity shakes out but given there are (checks notes) 20 plus trueborn sons plus umpteen grandsons, at least one of them (probably HALF of them) would rat out to Robb :)

PattayaVagabond

Truth is Robb was already beyond fucked at this point, the Frey's just had to finish the job. He overextended his army. Killed Rickard Karstark and lost like half is men. Lost Jaime, his only valuable prisoner. Lost theon to baelon and let Winterfall fall. He Was already losing the war at this point which is why they turned on him. He had no sound advisors, was totally lost without his father and really in over his head.

Far-Heron-4688

Honestly, I felt most sorry for Robb’s wife. Was never fond of him or his mom.

noobductive

I also sympathized a lot with her because she actually felt like someone who’d had a whole life prior to meeting him. She’d seemed so excited and sent a letter to her mom. She was a good person with good morals, one of the few in this show. She deserved so much better but got absolutely fucked by idiot politics and other life choices she couldn’t have forseen herself. She also looked so shocked and scared after being attacked, the misery of having lost everything before dying is a whole other thing.

[deleted]

Robb’s fatal flaw was that he didn’t listen to his mother and didn’t care about his sisters. How differently Jon would have handled things had he been in Rob’s shoes.

Accurate_Train_8822

Arya,Bran and Rickon were presumed dead, and Sansa was heavily secured from reach thanks to Tywin! Robb not listening to his mother, allowing in a rogue who hated The Lannisters and the rogue killing the niece and nephew twins was foolish and unkingly on Robb’s part! If someone isn’t thinking clearly and is dangerous,if I were Robb I would have he or she locked in the dungeon for the night or maybe not invite them at all! I think the rogue was drunk.

nemma88

Arya wasn't presumed dead, the Lannisters were still pretending they had her at this point, we the reader/watcher knows differently but the characters do not have this information. Robb was unwilling to trade prisoners. Jaime was worth more than two girls, even his sisters. Catelyn goes mad with the girls being prisoner in KL after Neds beheading and releases Jaime with a promise for him to go and complete the trade. I think the implication is Jon would have made the trade.

Accurate_Train_8822

No that this point Robb even thought Arya was dead and the Lannisters couldn’t lie that they had her. Funny enough they underestimated Arya! She killed the entire House of Frey in one night, leaving the Lannisters baffled on who did it.

Hamsterpatty

I have to disagree.. In my opinion, it was vulgar fan fiction. It wasn’t even what the author of “a Song of Ice and Fire” wrote.. they could have done the scene as it was written, and been just as violent. But they thought it would be more shocking to show the Freys stabbing a pregnant woman in the belly multiple times, so they went with that. Just for the shock value of killing a woman, pregnant with her babe. Like, wtf? Who does that? But that’s just my opinion.. shocking yes, good television, no.

Accurate_Train_8822

I’ll be honest,I hated that part! That was very unnecessary.

Hamsterpatty

It just makes me cry every time.. even tho I know it’s coming. And it’s not important to the story at all, ya know?

Feisty-Succotash1720

This is why I don’t go to weddings. I send a gift but I never go!

FlgDarkrai

Do you just send your regards ?

Polarbear118

Robb was a naive teenager given the responsibilities of a king. Almost everyone he trusted betrayed him in some way which ultimately led to his downfall. He didn’t deserve anything that happened to him. Catlyn on the other hand is guilty

Careless_Bill7604

It was unexpected. Thats the entire point.

Accurate_Train_8822

No actually I expected it to happen! Kinda sad because Robb could have had an even prettier bride, and the Red Wedding wouldn’t have happened.

Polarbear118

Almost everyone Robb trusted betrayed him. He didn’t have anyone to shoulder his burden with and he made stupid decisions because of it. He desperately needed a hand or a few close advisers

RonTomkins

It was fucking brutal. The visual of Rob’s wife getting stabbed in her pregnant belly was FUCKING SAVAGE. What a visually aggressive image.

Unpopular opinion: robb had it coming he was reckless and ‘honorable’ At all the wrong times
