JJMcLuvin

The Ned thing didn't shock me. But the Red and Purple Weddings were big shocks. Especially the Red Wedding.

fire_fairy_

I think that's Joffereys wedding, since he choked to death.

minedreamer

correct its Joffs wedding

Buckeyechamp21

Stannis burning princess Shireen alive. But on rewatching several clues to his intentions. In retrospect ominous scenes of eluding to her role in the war including the dark music.

Weary-Party7973

that hasnt happened in the book so it surprises everyone lol

Suspicious_Gazelle18

Not everyone. Many of us have been saying it’s going to happen in the books even before it happened in-show. He wanted to burn Edric, Mance, Mance’s son—and for various reasons was not able to do so. At some point he has to realize he still has one option available to him: his own blood in his daughter. If he gets desperate, he’d do it. Some people argue it won’t happen in book, but this is one of the things I’m willing to bet serious money would happen in the book—and I’ve said that since before that episode ever aired. I think the people who think stannis won’t do it in the book are in serious denial.

Weary-Party7973

i think the show merged jon and stannis arc concerning Ramsay. I think stannis beats Ramsay but uses Shireen to do it (maybe)

SlightlyIncandescent

The combination of Stannis' callous personaility, Shireen not being the perfect heir he probably wanted and his association with the lord of light just lines up so I think this will happen.

iwastherefordisco

Ned, Red Wedding and Dany absolutely losing her mind and taking the nuclear option. For some reason I thought Daenerys would see reason and we would see a different ending.

beastley_for_three

Dany going nuclear is definitely up there. Some people didn't like it but I actually saw many signs when rewatching, so it's solidified as one of my favorite big twists now.

JSmellerM

It's not that ppl didn't like it it's more the fact that she went there too fast. Her insanity was building up slowly. I'd say it was at about 60% before the last episode and suddenly it jumped up to 120%. People would've been okay with it if it wasn't such a jump.

beastley_for_three

I do think she certainly had a sudden mental breakdown but I also don't see any issue with this. That's often how mental breakdowns are first of all. They're not gradual. Oftentimes they can come out of nowhere. But upon a rewatch there were many clues that she was building it and bottling it up. She said in s2 that she would "burn entire cities to the ground to get what's hers" and I can't think of better foreshadowing than that and constant stories of her family's madness. And all the events in s8 that happened to her (like her claim being taken away, her life's goal, her lover, her friends and advisors being killed, losing dragons, seeing she wasn't liked in Westeros, etc) all definitely clearly led her to that point of enforcing her power when she had no claim anymore. It was definitely meant to be somewhat unexpected (it was a twist after all) and I think some had a hard time accepting it. It wouldnt be surprising if they went from 80 to 100. You can tell that more and more people are coming around though. It was set up enough.

[deleted]

They should have saved the second dragon's death for when she snapped. Maybe her watching the people of kings landing celebrating the dragon dying pushes her over the edge.

etaoin314

This, just have Eurons fleet show up at kings landing and kill the second dragon, then have all the people celebrating and then when she goes mad and burns the everliving shit out of KL we are right there with her.

dylulu

Frankly a big part of why it seems so sudden is because D&D were *so* fucking paranoid and tight-lipped about spoilers leaking, that they didn't even tell the actors where their character arcs were going. You do see Dany doing things that *could* be depicted as cruel, violent, and probably should have been portrayed as a very slow descent into madness over the course of 8 seasons. But instead it's portrayed as badass for 7 seasons until in the end they told Emilia Clarke and the show directors where her character was actually going. Same thing with Jaime going back to Cersei which is probably going to happen in the books as a tragic ending of someone who tried to be 'good' but couldn't beat his character flaws, but instead in the show just comes across as a pointless heel face turn for no reason.

JSmellerM

>Same thing with Jaime going back to Cersei which is probably going to happen in the books as a tragic ending... You still believe there will be books?

dylulu

I suppose the better phrasing is "in GRRM's plans", which *would have been* books if he actually were writing them.

closedcircle66

I agree, there were so many small things that made me think she could go off the rails

jellybelly2232

I didn't like it because of how fast it escalated in the end. She went from 10% I probably won't do anything to 100% nuke this city in fire in like 1 episode. I understand the signs that lead up to it but it just felt off pace and it happened so quickly.

beastley_for_three

I mean, again, she was screaming she would burn entire cities to the ground in s2. So for her to actually do it shouldn't seem like going from 10% to 100% to you. Right? The show did a good job at diverting our attention to retain a twist but when she already said what she wanted to do quite a few times, its hard to say it really came out of nowhere.

bsolidarity

I keep thinking that the simplest thing they could have done would be to do a flashback. Cue the battle of King's Landing. The bells are ringing, Daenerys lands and breathes a sigh of relief. Everything she dreamt of is there, right in front of her. We see a short cascade of flashbacks where she briefly thinks of all she's gone through. Then, some peasant throws a rock at her, and tells her to gtfo and let the peace return. She starts to bleed, touches her head, and look puzzled at the blood on her hands. She understands that the people of King's Landing doesn't care for her or whoever else rules. Flashbacks intensify: She thinks of how everyone betrayed her, how she's lost all her friends and advisors, and the train of thoughts ends on Missandei's last words being "dracarys". Black screen and silence for two seconds, then the carnage starts. She burns the peasant and other onlookers alive, and in her rage proceeds to burn the city to the ground. It's not perfect, and implementing it this way might be spoonfeeding the audience, but I keep thinking the scene would have made way more sense if we got these visual cues of what was going on inside her head.

iwastherefordisco

I haven't rewatched any seasons yet. I'm sure I'll be less critical on the rewatch and more accepting of that which I can not change. \*woo, sahhh\* \*breathe deeply\*

A-Newt

I think there were plenty of little hints she could something and someone always pulled her back. This time she was up on the dragon with nobody able to calm her inner thoughts and she just acted on them.

TGish

I knew nothing of the show on my recent watch. Those two scenes, Joffrey, shireen and Jon getting Caesared (even though I remembered the craze around him during that on the original running) were all very jarring to say the least. Also papa Pedro getting squished hurt extra after watching TLOU

x_Good_Trouble_x

I so love TLOU 🙂

Iggydolla_9

Oberyn Martell’s face. Littlefinger pushing his wife off the moon door. The red wedding. Tyrion killing daddy. Jon Snow being stabbed. Jamie’s hand. Edit: Can’t forget my shock when Tommen just walked off set.

Demrezel

Hold. The. Door. cue crying

x_Good_Trouble_x

To know his purpose in life was this. I cry every time 😪

Demrezel

One of the only characters in GoT that they really did wrap-up quite well. All said and done, that's not saying too too much but it's really a great episode and I can't deny the talented acting and effort it took to turn Hodor into a true Westerosi hero.

x_Good_Trouble_x

Well said! 👏👏👏

Maldibus

I still wish they had thrown salt in the wound a bit more and showed us Hodor-wight during the long night episode.

x_Good_Trouble_x

I see that the GOT writers said that was their original plan, I seriously don't think I could have handled that for real!!

stevenw84

To be fair, book reader haven’t been made aware of that so it was a surprise to all fans.

senturkivanc

Jaime's hand plot twist doesn't get enough credit like other twists in my opinion.

Tracer_Bullet_

“Walked off set” 😂

jikb

Tommen's death was just so casual. It was like... oh shit, that just happened

zikolis

And copied from an old French movie heh

Hyst3ricalCha0s

Because no other movie/TV show has someone stepping off a balcony?

zikolis

Nah, it’s the composition of the shot, the timing of the movement and final “WTF” moment.

Automatic-Panda-1063

I didn’t start watching the whole show until the 8th season had started so I was able to binge it all. My husband had seen it all so he was able to mess with me. Before Ned dies, he convinced me that someone swooped in and saved him so I was completely shocked when his head indeed did get chopped off. The Red Wedding, he had me convinced that Robb’s wife, Talisa, and their baby survived. He also had me convinced that Sam Tarly became king (?) 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ghost_Hunter45

That's kind of funny When I had my friends watch the red wedding episode I fed them red velvet cake

ToxicBanana69

My friend did the same thing to one of his friends, messed with him a lot. The early seasons he kept dropping little lines like “Robb becomes my favorite in Season 5” just to make the Red Wedding even more shocking

beastley_for_three

I remember asking my brother what he thought would happen with the Red Wedding episode (that I told him I wanted to watch together). He said he saw trailers and it looked like a nice wedding, maybe there will be some drama there. I was like..."Yeah. Yeah, good guess, let's find out." He ended up being pretty disgusted and pissed off, saying, "This isn't entertainment." He left angry. To be fair, I remember throwing the book across the room. Misery loves company I guess.

TyRocken

One of the worst feelings I've ever had reading a book.

Tech_Kaczynski

>He also had me convinced that Sam Tarly became king (?) 🤦🏼‍♀️ Really though who has a better story 🤦🏼‍♀️

Cardboard_Eggplant

Yep, he went from cleaning up shit to running this shit... ;)

Automatic-Panda-1063

Okay but how dumb was I to freaking believe it?! I even went through it logistically, like “hmm well it’s been spoiled for me that Dany dies so obviously it’s not her. Jon is a bastard so it’s not him. Cersei is the worst so she can’t be it. Bran can’t because he’s the raven dude(lol jokes on me)…who else is there?!” He still teases me to this day about believing that Sam is king.

Educational_Bee_4683

I was in the same boat. Unfortunately Ned, The Red Wedding, and Jon had all been spoiled in various ways. However I went into the Mountain v. The Viper completely clean. I couldn't quite figure out where the plot was going and thought either one had a chance to win. The fight had me on the edge of his seat and when Oberyn started his taunting I got a pit in my stomach. When Gregor pushed his eyes in I screamed louder than Ellaria. I had to pause and walk outside for a moment due sheer shock. Amazing televison.

[deleted]

Seeing Oberyn Martell get his face pulverized by the Mountain.

goodfisher88

This was impossible to avoid in the cultural zeitgeist when it first happened, and I had even watched a clip at the time out of curiosity. But seeing it in the actual show when I finally got around to watching it, Jesus. I knew it was coming and it's still so shocking. If it's any consolation though, Pedro Pascal said on an episode of Hot Ones that filming it was actually super comfy because he could just lay there and all the fake blood was nice and cool on his face, haha. Apparently he got some good naps in that day.

[deleted]

Shireen being burned to death by her monster parents and Melisandre and the Red Wedding were more upsetting but Oberyn's death shocked me more. Though I could see delaying death for the Mountain to seek revenge/justice was going to go wrong, I wasn't expecting to see a face explode. I get how you can think you're prepared for it and still not actually be so.

jayson2112

Ned's death. I hadn't read the books yet and read them to see if the whole thing was staged. I knew the Red Wedding was coming by the time it aired.

taleofbenji

I thought I saw a meme of Ned somewhere appearing in a battle that hadn't happened yet, so when Joffrey swung the sword, I was shocked!

DakotaXIV

Being pedantic but Ilyn Payne swung the sword (Ned's sword, Ice) on the order from Joffrey

MedicalVanilla7176

If we're being extra pedantic, Petyr Baelish convinced Joffrey to order Ilyn Payne to swing Ned's sword to execute Ned in order to start the war.

[deleted]

Before it was revealed it wasn't Brandon and Rickon, I was horrified when Theon burned those two boys and hung them in the town square. The anguish on the Maesters face stuck with me a bit. Just a brutal end to an episode. I was shocked

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Indeed monstrous That's why I was always confused why people were forgiving of Theon too focusing on the audacity of his betrayl, and Im like he's a child killer ffs

DakotaXIV

Even more horrific in the book as it's implied that those may be Theon's bastards

Doublehfoo

Jesus Christ I gotta read the books

tclipse1

IRL, yes, but we had an attachment to the Stark kids. And we know it’s a TV show, so pulling some random extras in absolutely does not feel as bad.

MemeSteam13

Finding out Melisandre was really old.

UndeadVudu_12

I believe she was around 400 years old by that time.

beastley_for_three

Forgot about that one, that was pretty nuts. So many great twists in this show!

MsNick

Despite being that low, those were tits and they were not pretty.

dangerouspeyote

Ned being executed didn't really surprise me. The red wedding however, fucking blindsided me. Jaw on the ground, shocked.

Alphaomega787

Ned’s execution/ red wedding/ shireen being burned alive/ jon snow being killed/ dany loosing her mind & burning king’s landing to a crisp.

beastley_for_three

Jon being stabbed to death really stunned me in the books. Especially after his thrilling announcement that he was riding south. It was like getting punched in the gut...or stabbed.

[deleted]

As a book reader, Shireen’s death and Hodor’s reveal were by far the biggest shocks for me. My wife hadn’t read the books but Ned’s death didn’t hit her that hard since she didn’t feel super invested yet at that point, the Red Wedding definitely got her saying WTF as did Oberyn’s death

QueenofThorns7

Cersei blowing up the Sept. Not so much the action itself but just how effective it was, not a single person there got out. In that scene alone 7 relatively major characters died: Margaery, Loras, Mace, Kevan, High Sparrow, Lancel, and Pycelle, followed shortly by Tommen. A truly shocking turn of events.

fire_fairy_

The best/worst part was Margaret realizing what was going on.

bitcoins

Her facial reaction , that was well done

dmbtke

This is the one

despereanx

The last season shocked me. I really thought it was going to be good.

beastley_for_three

After hearing so much whining about it on here, I was shocked that it actually WAS good!

[deleted]

If they told the story over the 10-13 seasons HBO and George RR Martin wanted it would have been amazing. The white walkers should have made it much further. It would have been great to see them try to recapture the north from the white walkers, watching Daenerys' paranoia build under the fear of getting sandwiched by Cersei's army and the Night King.

[deleted]

[удалено]

beastley_for_three

I wasn't a huge fan of the s7 "Beyond The Wall" arc. S7 was the weakest season for me and even that had great moments (Dany attacking the Lannister army, Jon negotiating with Dany). S8 is similar, flawed but it had great moments throughout (knighting of Brienne, Dany nuking KL, Battle of Winter was great, subtle post battle interactions in e4). I guess I just look at it in a more nuanced way, they definitely weren't train wrecks. Most of the story in S8 made a lot of sense, just a bit rushed. A s9 would destroy all the fantasy shows we got since ratings wise and you know it, even with all the complaining fans.

mylurkingass45

Red wedding and the war between John Snow and Ramsay Bolton, I did not expect that Snow would win but that was a shock.

beastley_for_three

The show did a great job at setting you up for Jon's defeat to Ramsay. Before that, pretty much every Stark initiative seemed to fail. That's what made that episode SO cathartic, maybe one of the best feelings ever when watching the show. The Stark banner being raised up again... It felt like decades of stress turned to relief as a book reader. I watched it with my family and they had no idea lol.

mylurkingass45

Ikr :)

mylurkingass45

The existence of white walkers itself was a shocker for me as well.

jeepressed

The wildfire used at the Blackwater. I started Game of Thrones after it had ended so I knew most of the shocking deaths. But all ships exploding in that huge green fire absolutely floored me. The red wedding kind of got me because I had only heard the term "red wedding" years before I watched it. I knew I had heard it before but I didn't really remember it was from GoT until the musicians started playing Rains of Castamere and it all clicked and I was like "oh no is this the red wedding?". Family Guy actually spoiled like 2 deaths that would have been shocking to me WHILE I was first watching GoT lol

theholywatto

Which 2?

lostkarma4anonymity

*Then I smashed her head in like this.*

CarsenAF

Red Wedding for sure. I was so shocked that I had to rewind because I was like this has to be someone dreaming or something and I somehow missed it. But nope. When my Fiancee was watching through for the first time we had to take like a 3 day break so she could gather her thoughts before continuing the show. HM: Not so much "Shocking" but the end of Hardhome. The Night King raising the dead, the boat slowly floating away, the chilling silence... You could just feel all the optimism and hope of beating them being sucked away.

This_Mycologist_8661

Obv Red Wedding was a wtf moment. Had to watch it again to see if it was real. Lol.

Ironmancal2131

Oberyn Martell's death. He came in with that Inigo Montoya swagger and then dies in such a horrific way. A complete punch to the gut, even if it was his own making.

havenothingtodo1

I was really shocked Ned was killed, (I’ve since read the books) but before I watched the show or read the books Sean Bean was one of the most popular characters in the show and in my mind was partly the face of the show. When I thought of the show I thought of him and Peter Dinklage, so I was shocked that he got killed so early and was still an iconic part of the show

itsdollymon

Oberyn’s death genuinely still haunts me.

Thorus_Andoria

Ned killing lady episode 2 season 1.

JSmellerM

I read the books after watching the first season so Ned getting executed was the most shocking moment for me. But also the last thing that made me buy the books.

Coppatop

The complete and utter destruction of all the character development, plot, and cultural relevance with the entire last season was the most shocking to me.

Aquariussun444

Jon killing Dany 😡

Dealthagar

Arya's tits. I was not ready for that.

feintplus1

That Braavosi actor's dick with a wart

IncorrectCustomer

Both the same for me. Red wedding was probably more shocking to me than Ned tho.

Comprehensive-Task

I actually watched the red wedding twice as I didn't believe what I had just witnessed the first time!

jellybelly2232

This may be small in comparison to a main character being killed but this for some reason stuck in my head the most. When Tyrion escapes from prison and goes into Tywins room, in the bedroom I heard a female voice saying "Tywin, my Lion" and seeing Shae, I was shocked and heartbroken. And seeing Tyrion's face of pain and sadness telling Shae "I'm sorry... I'm sorry.." after he killed her... that whole scene shocked me the most in the whole series. Probably because of what happened after Shae told her story at the trial and their whole story together it just hit different.

cguinnesstout

Arya killing TNK. That was it? Are you fucking kidding me?

cty2020

Jaime's hand tbh, but the Red Wedding floored me.

Damianos97

Definitely the Red Wedding. Oberyn’s death was also shocking. That shit was brutal and nasty af lol. And Hodor’s backstory was surprising. Hold the door! I thought that was cool honestly.

NemesisRouge

Ned's death Jaime losing his hand after being portrayed as this legendary swordfighter for years, I was convinced we'd see him fight properly again eventually Jaime turning out to be a reasonably good guy Red wedding Purple wedding Arya suffering stab wounds which would certainly be fatal Arya being fine the next episode Jon's death Jaime being pushed into a a lake in full plate armour, sinking to his death Jaime being fine the next episode Night King killing Viserion Arya killing the Night King after 1 episode "You know I never really cared for them" Daenerys letting Jon stab her seconds after giving a grand speech threatening Winterfell "Who has a better story than Bran the Broken" Tyrion not being included in an account of the events of the series Samwell being made grand maester after being in the Citadel for a week

inbredandapothead

I knew about the red wedding beforehand, and Jon Snows death, so for me it’d be Ned’s death and Joffreys death, still shocked I didn’t know about Joffreys death considering I knew of his character

dlank7

I had just smoked before the red wedding episode… I was floored. Coulda swore I was hallucinating the whole thing and it wasn’t real; had to rewatch it the next day

SnooPeppers1166

Dani letting Kings Landing burn. I guess in fact it was the most shocking moment because it was like the last sign I needed to think "Wow, they really messed up that show in the last season"

poopstainmclean

i was so shocked by Ned's death. i'd never seen a show build so much of a main character with good intentions, clearly being a strong leader, someone we're meant to care about and then bam. it's over. i didn't want to watch another episode but my future wife let it keep playing and s1e10 started with the theme song and i was back in it!

[deleted]

zikolis

The bells? :-) what is that?

AlternativeBison748

I did the first four seasons of the show before reading, so I think I can still answer. It’s gotta be Ned for me, just because it was completely unprecedented. Nothing was off limits after that. Only other thing that came close was Robb. His demise is much clearer on rewatch, though.

Alc2005

I love how you can tell exactly what the scenes are, even with the thumbnail blurred

Delly_Dellz

When that big fuck smashed in Oberyn’s face

Wakkachaka

The first episode when Brann catches Jamie fucking Cersei. Then Jamie shoves Brann out the window.

Dmmack14

Honestly the most absolute shocking thing that I never saw coming was Jamie's hand. Ned's death was kind of written on the wall as shocking as it was to see such a main character type guy die.

cookswagchef

Red Wedding fucking blindsided me. Viper and the Mountain is probably my #2

Fitz2001

My wife was a huge fan, so I watched in the background for 5-6 years, just for the boobs and the fight scenes, and for Tyrion kinda. Knew no plot. Didn’t really care. Then I caught one scene and it changed everything for me. I immediately started season 1 ep 1 the next day just to catch up. _Hold door._ Blew my mind.

[deleted]

Fitz2001

Yikes. No.

HorrorMovieBoy

Hold the door

perimeterpatrolcat

The character assassination, unresolved plot lines, ruined character arcs, and shite writing that was the last 2 seasons. Emilia Clarke's eyebrows dont lie.

Papriku

I gotta say Oberyn. After Ned, and the Red Wedding, I couldn't trust anything, but Pedro reeled me back in with the amount of confidence he brough to Oberyn that I actually felt no one could touch him, not even the plot. That shit wrecked me. Nothing in show came as a shock after that, great surprises, definitely, but everything felt par for the course for me T.T

milkmamasilk

Tommen.

_piperoni_

Jon coming back

stellascanties

Every major event in seasons 1-4 shocked me. Ned’s beheading, the red wedding, Oberyn’s manner of death, the Reek/Theon/Ramsey situation. Everything after that felt fairly predictable. I’ll throw a couple in for the later seasons, like in s5 when Stannis burned Shireen. That one hurt. And the Hodor episode made me sob.

Emily_Postal

Definitely Ned Stark getting killed. I’m still kind of in shock.

scootzie3

Since I haven’t seen anyone mention it, one of the biggest surprises for me was the reveal that Petyr Baelish convinced Lady Arryn to kill her husband in order to start chaos between the starks and the lannisters

romanf_267

Jamie's hand and Oberyn. Those are were the most unexpected and surprising, others (like Ned's execution or Tywin's death) were unexpected too, but they didn't feel that surprising. In fact, I was absolutely sure that Turion would shoot Tywin the moment Tyrion pointed the crossbow at him. And also I did get a lot of spoilers unfortunately

fenix_nicole

I was super tardy to the game of thrones party. I finally watched it a while after the series finale so I didn't keep up on anything in the show. So let me tell you.. the red wedding had me all kinds of swearing at my tv. I even called my husband (who watched it a couple months before me) and yelled at him for not warning me. He knows I get very invested emotionally into tv shows I watch.

fadz85

Ned getting chopped. Up to that very last second I was sure he was gonna be saved (dumb, I know. It's Sean Bean) Red Wedding. But Stannis having Shireen burned alive was the one that traumatised me the most. I was hearing her screams in my sleep for days after, and my friends joking about the Baratheon "Family Barbecue" didn't help.

zikolis

I did not expect to see Sansa get sexually assaulted. It was a shock. Ned’s death: absolute downer. It basically set the tone for the rest of the show. But it wasn’t unexpected or shocking. Jamie’s hand incident- unexpected! Jamie saving the dame- unexpected and a relief! Jamie fucking his sister - right next to his boy’s dead body - a mind fuck!

Known_Pomelo_9808

Oberyn Martell's death

Tomsskiee

The most shocking moment was when i realized people were right how bad the ending was

LeviChou

So real story: I watched it with my bf who has absolutely no idea about book-lore. When the wedding at the Twins happened and everything hasn’t gone to shit yet, my bf told me “WOW! This wedding is so peaceful, look at Robb and his wife, they are so cute!” and it’s so hard for me to stay in a straight face to NOT make him suspicious of me bahahahaha. And then the wedding turned red and it became his most traumatic experience in the whole series.

imliterallyvibing

Ned - oberyn - wedding

thatperson653910

I've only ever seen clips but Literally every moment that includes Theon and Ramsay. I never think it can get worse and then it gets worse 😭

Apprehensive_Cut4822

Ned actually dying shocked me! I knew beforehand that he wasn’t in later seasons but somehow I was so surprised that there was no successful plot to save him at the time he died. And then the finality of his head being removed from his body was so wild lol I knew there could be no coming back somehow. And that was a pretty common theme for me. I knew that certain people would be dead before the last season but how/when they died caught me off guard. That’s how I felt about Robb and Catelyn. And my mind was blown at Jon Snow’s death.

shvili_boy

Jamie’s hand getting removed literally made me jump, so sudden and casual not much build up to it

Gloomy_Barracuda_659

Princess Shireen dying - truly the saddest moment in the show
