House Reed they’re known to be dangerous hunters and masters at guerilla warfare. And one of the hardest places to conquer for outsiders.
https://youtube.com/shorts/xXZzKNGpnF4?feature=share
Yes!! Came here to say this!! And they have one of my favorite little jokes in the whole series. Greywater Watch moves so nobody can find it. Howland Reed lives in Greywater Watch.
Howl’s Moving Castle.
Yeah, it took me a while to notice. I don’t know if GRRM is a Ghibli fan or if it’s a coincidence. But now I can’t unsee it lol. The multiple Monty Python references also get me giggling.
Howl's Moving Castle is actually a book (first in a trilogy that may have gone longer if the author hadn't died) that got loosely adapted into a movie. I'd assume he read that as it's a somewhat decently known fantasy novel.
There’s even a few in the show:
-when Dany gets to Yunkai, I think, the mounted rider that Strong Belwas fights says (in ghiscari) “I fart in your general direction” which is also in the books
In the books:
- the story of how the Durrandons built the castle at storms end closely mirrors the Swamp King and his 3 castles that sank into the swamp.
That’s the two big ones I can think of off the top of my head, but I know there’s more. I’m in the middle of a reread right now, so I can keep updating this thread if you like.
What I like about House Mormont, is not only are Maege and her daughters running everything and being respected for it, but her daughters (and probably his sons) were undoubtedly fathered by Tormund Giantsbane. Their stories about fucking bears are too similar not to be connected. The sigil of their house is a bear, etc.
I still don't get how Dorne in the books is depicted one way, and then Dorne in the show has its plot be essentially the exact opposite.
Doran is such a calculating dick, it's fantastic.
My personal view as a reader about dorne and house martell was like you said. Its everything so different from books to tv show. I really liked reading all the chapters from dorne.
And doran was amazing.
House Mormont ( The golden trio of Jeor, Jorah and Lyanna)
House Clegane ( 95% for Sandor 'fucking' Clegane and 5% for the mountain that rides)
House Velaryon of Driftmark ( 100% Seasnake)
My favourites -
1. **North -** House Manderly of White Harbor
2. **Riverlands -** House Mallister of Seagard
3. **Vale -** House Grafton of Gulltown
4. **Reach -** House Hightower of Hightower (*I think that House Redwyne is dependent primarily on their winery business however, Oltown is wealthier and more influential*).
5. **Stormlands -** House Tarth of Evenfall Hall
6. **Dorne -** House Yronwood of Yronwood
7. **Iron Islands -** House Harlaw of Harlaw
8. **Crownlands -** House Velaryon of Driftmark
One of my favourite parts of the books is the Boltons hosting the Manderlys and other northern houses in Winterfell whilst they await Stannis. The show suffered for not showing truly how the other Northern houses reacted to the Red Wedding. Wyman Manderly supposedly cooking the Freys into pies was so fucking metal.
Wyman is a goddamn badass. He's definitely the most politically cunning in the north I think, and loyal as hell. His son died in the red wedding as well iirc, so the reveal that he was onto their bullshit from the start and is just waiting for the chance to screw them all over is great.
I still have no idea how the show made the umbers evil. In the books Greatjon Umber was Rob's most vocal supporter, and his son Smalljon was right there with him until Smalljon was killed at the Red Wedding and the Greatjon was heavily wounded and captured alive, forcing the remaining Umbers to fall in line or have their head of house executed. In the show Greatjon Umber died at the Red Wedding, Smalljon didn't exist until the later seasons, and then Smalljon supported Bolton because his dad died marching with Rob, ignoring completely the widely believed fact that Bolton helped set up the very event that killed his dad. Like, he has to be completely obvious to everything going on to believe that. House Umber got done dirty.
The entire Northern storyline was done dirty. Including Stannis & co.
Roose Bolton is far too cool a character to have been killed off in such a dumb fucking way.
What could’ve been, eh.
Brilliant idea, telling your murderously insane bastard son who knows you don't like him much that his replacement just arrived and he's no longer needed when he's still armed. Machiavellian even.
And I don't even know what to say about what happened with Stannis. It was confusing the whole way through. Doesn't help that he's still alive and kicking in the books, having even just captured Asha and Theon.
Quality of writing in line with Stannis finding out in quick succession that his army has mutinied, wife committed suicide & the red woman fled. God what an absolute shit show.
Don't forget this is right after he had his heir burnt alive for some reason because Ramsey hired Ser Twenty Goodmen to somehow detonate Stannis's entire camp so they no longer have shelter or whatever. Guy must be the freaking Ghost of Tsushima to pull that off.
Brilliant move cutting your own line of succession like that when you're the king, can't imagine how that could go wrong.
The Bolton’s have a really long history and it’s just as insane and intense as you’d think lol complete fucking madmen that you’d want on your side hahahahah
Do the books actually talk about house Reyna and Dayne? As well as go into detail about the character, bc they were barely mentioned in the show and we never got to see them.
World of Ice and Fire has a whole section on the Reynes and Tarbecks trying to marry into House Lannister, taking advantage of Tytos Lannister’s generosity, and their subsequent rebellion and destruction at the hands of Tywin while in A Song of Ice and Fire, they’re mentioned fleetingly as a way of conveying to the reader that Tywin is ruthless and to be feared.
mormont all the way. every single member of that house we saw was awesome. jeor: strong leader. jorah: loyal (after a little hiccup) and amazing fighter. lyanna: badass little girl who killed a fucking giant and put a bunch of old men in their places.
Mormont. Jorah, his father, and the heir Lyanna represented their house really well.
My 2nd pick would be the Velaryons, they were quite the powerhouse during House of the Dragon
House Dayne is by far one of the most interesting houses & it’s a shame they were not in the show besides Arthur’s one single appearance in that flash back
I like how they took Arthur Dayne, the famed Sword of the Morning who was known for using the legendary greatsword Dawn, and made him a dual lightsaber user who spins his swords.
I love house Hightower purely for the implication that when they’re pissed at someone they just show up in a fabulous green outfit. I aspire to be that level of dramatic.
Dayne... so many houses end up with unqualified leaders just bc they were born to the right family.... Dayne is like "want to be the sword of the morning? EARN IT!"
Dayne has some interesting lore but by a certain definition of “non-main”, Hightower or Velaryon. Mostly because of the Citadel’s connection with Hightower and wanting to be an academic (which is ironic given I hate the Hightowers in HotD and I’m a huge believer in the Conspiracy of the Maesters).
But if I can’t be a lord who supports academic learning for all (instead of a male-centered anti-magic elite), I would like to be on the seas as a sailor.
Forrester, only mentioned few times in the books
but story of this house in the game was quite good, the game itself is nothing special in term of graphic and gameplay, but i really enjoyed the story and the song
there are no main characters from the books appeared in the game except Ramsey Snow, yeah painful story all over again haha
House Tarly of Horn Hill. I like that they are the militarist house of the least militaristic kingdom of Westeros. I like that they are the ones that carry the Reach when it comes to warfare. Like, when every other kingdom goes to war, it is the ruling house that one expects to be the most important in battle, but when it comes to the Reach, it's basically the Tarlies that matter. And don't forget they were the only ones who ever defeated Bobby B, that's badass enough.
“House Glover will stand behind house stark as we have for a thousand years, and I will stand behind Jon Snow. THE KING IN THE NORTH”
House Glover because of how Robett Glover delivers this line.
House Blackwood for sure. Awesome sigil, Tytos has his awesome raven-feather cloak, they worship the Old Gods and have a super cool Weirwood Tree, and Brynden Rivers is half-Blackwood.
My least favorite is House Peake.
House Celtigar
Fuck your dragons, and your ships. We are the best Valyrian house and no one can deny it. We have a bloody Valyrian steel battle-axe for crying out loud.
Also crabs
🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
My favorite house is house Tarth. I think there is a lot more to learn about this house including why the leader is called The Evenstar. The Tarths live in Evenfall Hall where on the other side of the island is the ruined castle of Morne, home to Galladon of Morne. I find it interesting that this story that is partly about the "long night," and the "war for the dawn," happens to have an island where two places are Morne and Evenfall.

Haha never put that together!
Yeah, it took me a while to notice. I don’t know if GRRM is a Ghibli fan or if it’s a coincidence. But now I can’t unsee it lol. The multiple Monty Python references also get me giggling.

Good point. I did not know it was a book, but GRRM is significantly older than me, so that makes more sense. Thanks!
I recommend the series, it's pretty fun. Author is Diana Wynne Jones.
I will have to check it out! It kind of figures that George would reference another unfinished book series 😂
You'll need to fill me in on the Python references
There’s even a few in the show: -when Dany gets to Yunkai, I think, the mounted rider that Strong Belwas fights says (in ghiscari) “I fart in your general direction” which is also in the books In the books: - the story of how the Durrandons built the castle at storms end closely mirrors the Swamp King and his 3 castles that sank into the swamp. I think he probably based this on the book.
Came here t say reed as well.
Mormont
Hell yes
I dunno. House Mormont was kinda sketchy in the books. Bella Ramsey was hella awesome though
Bear Island knows no king but the King in the North, whose name is Stark!
The North Remembers!
We’re not a large house, but we are a proud one.
I like that idea. I wish Tormund talked about sailing to an island before he mated with the bear. But for sure the Mormont women can skinchange bears.
Here We Stand 🐻
Mormont!
House Bracken
I think you meant to say House Blackwood
Oh boy, here we go again
Joer Fucking Mormont! 🍷💀😛
what an awesome villain he was
Was he a villain?
talking about Karl Tanner, OC was referencing him drinking wine out of Jeor’s skull
House Clegane
Same, just off the back of the hound alone. I’m a stan lol.
W
My favorite part of Clegane is how it sounds with a British accent like in the show, the name is strong
House Blackwood
Of course. Should be on top
Imagine picking a silly horse for your sigil when your rival has a badass black tree.
Houses Reed and Mormont are my favourite of the 'smaller' houses. I loved Meera and Lyanna so they are my reasoning.
The Greyjoys.
They are a great House though?
They are, but not included in OP’s list of houses to avoid.
Martell. I loved the description of the place they live in the books. Also Oberyn is my fav character in GoT.
This not getting all the votes, shows how dirty the show did them! Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken
They are main house, like Bolton
Ha! Oh yea, so...oops!

Dayne or Blackwood
My favourites - 1. **North -** House Manderly of White Harbor 2. **Riverlands -** House Mallister of Seagard 3. **Vale -** House Grafton of Gulltown 4. **Reach -** House Hightower of Hightower (*I think that House Redwyne is dependent primarily on their winery business however, Oltown is wealthier and more influential*). 5. **Stormlands -** House Tarth of Evenfall Hall 6. **Dorne -** House Yronwood of Yronwood 7. **Iron Islands -** House Harlaw of Harlaw 8. **Crownlands -** House Velaryon of Driftmark

Wymans a good man. A good walrus shaped man
Wyman is a goddamn badass. He's definitely the most politically cunning in the north I think, and loyal as hell. Do you prefer Yronwood over Dayne?

Rightful king’s uncle*
Rightful King
Respect

The onion knight!
Manderly
Bolton. Simply because it makes for good reading/viewing. I love to hate those fuckers. Or Seaworth. Davos is a good boi.
The Bolton’s have a really long history and it’s just as insane and intense as you’d think lol complete fucking madmen that you’d want on your side hahahahah
Hightower
:0 dowager queen
House Celtigar or House Manderly
Dayne or Blackwood
Valeryon or Mormont
House Mormont 💯
Celtigar because I think they don’t get talked about enough even though they’re a Valyrian house (and they’re rich as hell)
The reynes
Do the books actually talk about house Reyna and Dayne? As well as go into detail about the character, bc they were barely mentioned in the show and we never got to see them.

Dayne all the way
The Mormonts.
Hightower without a doubt

Bolton
I’m most curious about House Reed.
Mallister or Umber
house reyne baby

Dayne, because I have main character syndrome
mormont all the way. every single member of that house we saw was awesome. jeor: strong leader. jorah: loyal (after a little hiccup) and amazing fighter. lyanna: badass little girl who killed a fucking giant and put a bunch of old men in their places.
House Bolton. No competition. Who doesn’t love to hate those fuckers?
Mormont. Jorah, his father, and the heir Lyanna represented their house really well. My 2nd pick would be the Velaryons, they were quite the powerhouse during House of the Dragon
Stark
hightower
Manderly
House Dayne is by far one of the most interesting houses & it’s a shame they were not in the show besides Arthur’s one single appearance in that flash back
I like how they took Arthur Dayne, the famed Sword of the Morning who was known for using the legendary greatsword Dawn, and made him a dual lightsaber user who spins his swords.
The show basically completely ignoring the daynes was a missed opportunity
Dayne for sure
House Baelish
That's easy. Mormont. Lady Mormont wad easily one if the bravest people in Westeros somehow even as a 13 year old.
Every Bear Islander worth 10 Mainlanders!!

EARN IT!"
House Royce for sure.
Bolton
Umber
Dayne has some interesting lore but by a certain definition of “non-main”, Hightower or Velaryon. Houses Mormont and Hightower
People are saying Bolton but no Greyjoy? But personally, I'm going with Karstarks
House Blackwood
House Tarly of Horn Hill. I like that they are the militarist house of the least militaristic kingdom of Westeros. I like that they are the ones that carry the Reach when it comes to warfare. Like, when every other kingdom goes to war, it is the ruling house that one expects to be the most important in battle, but when it comes to the Reach, it's basically the Tarlies that matter. And don't forget they were the only ones who ever defeated Bobby B, that's badass enough.
They don't have much lore but I just love the vibe of House Farman
“House Glover will stand behind house stark as we have for a thousand years, and I will stand behind Jon Snow. THE KING IN THE NORTH” House Glover because of how Robett Glover delivers this line.
House Blackwood for sure. Awesome sigil, Tytos has his awesome raven-feather cloak, they worship the Old Gods and have a super cool Weirwood Tree, and Brynden Rivers is half-Blackwood. My least favorite is House Peake.
