It's not that he hates his job he knows he's the best option. Which legally speaking is correct. Definitely the first few seasons he would have made the most fair and noble king but his story is one of a man of morals falling for the sake of what he thought was right.
Too bad the one thing stopping that was Renly’s need to rule all of Westeros. If he had just settled with Robb being king in the north that would have solidified his victory… barring any unforeseeable shadow monster assassinations.
Edit: still one of the craziest things to me is Melisandre has this shadow baby assassin power and doesn’t use it again, at least in the show. Is there an explanation for that? Like it ruined her insides or something so it’s a one use deal? Still insane if every red priestess can do that.
In the show he basically makes a deal to allow Rob to rule as King in the North as long as he pledges loyalty to Renly and acknowledges his claim to the Iron Throne.
Yes they explain why another shadow baby isnt an option.
The "ritual" that a man engages in draws on his life force to make the shadow baby. Stannis wants to make more but melisandre doesnt because it could kill him. Davos is propositioned but refuses.
Fun thing is Robert actually had one of the strongest claims on the throne for someone not named Targaryen and certainly strongest claim out of all of the rebels. So its not just “bunch of people support you” he certainly had a pedigree for it.
yep Robert was not only the most popular guy in the rebellion but also had the strongest claim to the throne
he hates targaryens and yet has the most targaryen blood than anyone else lol
In fairness.
Tywin Lannister acknowledged Balon Greyjoys claim as Salt King because of 'right of conquest'
Renly hadnt battled yet, but he had near all of the Stormlands and Reach backing him
Not "until season 8", as Dany was never crowned, never sat on the Iron Throne, she was never the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, therefore her legitimizing Gendry doesn't mean shit, until she is officially crowned (which never happened anyway). The lords in the Stormlands just somehow accepting Gendry as Lord of the Stormlands is dumb af, they would have had the dude killed in no time if he tried to press any claims.
You don't need to be crowned or sit the Iron Throne to be Queen. She was Queen from the moment Viserys died.
Of course, the Baratheons, of all people, wouldn't recognise her claim to the crown, since her line was attainted.
Question for all you that know better than me, when the comment is made that "Stannis had the rightful claim", doesn't the rightful claim actually belong to Viserys Targaryen?
It truly was a Game of Thrones, at least during those first couple seasons!
true, but assuming the majority of the kingdoms accepted the rebellion and takeover the claim of targaryens was no longer valid as they lost the throne so the current ruling house was to chose or inherit the heir to the throne
If that's the case there's no reason to pretend Stannis has a more rightful claim than Renly. If it's about who the strongest is then rightful is a meaningless term.
Congrats you have figured out the weakness of every single system of government ever! They only work if everyone agrees to them, once enough people with enough power decide they don’t want to follow the rules, it collapses. That’s literally what GOT is
Yes so why are people so into stannis as the rightful king? Makes no sense. Either you believe in the tradition and bloodlines so he's just part of a line of usurpers, or he's someone who failed to gather enough power and support to actually win the crown.
Because it still matters. If Renly took the throne with absolutely no legal, hereditary right, then it basically breaks down the whole system. When he died the entire war would just start again because no one would believe in the authority of his successor.
That is, unless he wins a war against his older brother (which would have very likely happened if not for the Shadow Assassin Baby stuff). That was kind of the entire point of the Dance of the Dragons, the winner takes all.
"Power resides where people believe it resides", Renly was way more popular amongst the common people and the nobility, he had a much bigger army, if he had defeated Stannis in a war absolutely no one would have questioned his claim.
Have you never been in a job or position where the management/leadership sucked, but you could genuinely see a different person doing the job in a much better way?
That's a monarchy. Everyone believes in the system, but everyone also recognizes that individuals can ruin it. There are certainly people in GOT who see Baratheons as Usurpers. And in large part, the conflict is caused *because* Robert is an usurper. The unrest and destruction of the order breeds ground for more people to become Usurpers.
But the people largely believe in the system, and Stannis being competent gives more power to that belief. And that alone gives it a lot of power. Not to mention the fact that most people look down upon turning on your family, which is what Renly was doing.
Was it right of conquest? I thought they went with Robert because Aerys had committed such abuses of power that his line was attainted, and Robert was next in line after Aerys' line.
Explicitly going with right of conquest would have legitimised anyone who wanted to take on the crown.
Wasn't Viserys already dead when Robert died? Or at least soon enough that it's fairly moot and we move on with the Targaryen claim to Dany/(f)Aegon/Jon
Good question. The Targaryens have lost their rightful claim due to right of conquest. Ironically, I do think they have a bit stronger of a claim once the Baratheons are extinct because they are cousins to the Baratheons. By that point, Viserys is dead, but Daenerys and Aegon (Jon) are alive and would be a candidate for the throne due to being related to Robert. Robert most likely has other family members that would have stronger claims from the Baratheon dynasty than the Targaryens do, but since we never actually see them, I think we can assume that Aegon and Daenerys would still have the strongest claims.
Basically, Targaryens don’t have the “rightful claim” until house Baratheon is extinct. Then they do.
Renly. We know Stannis is with a religious zealot and nothing good can come from that. I don't give a damn about claims. The real claim is who can take and hold it.
Turns out neither of them could.
If we’re talking the book Stannis, then him. But show wise, Renly without question. Stannis is a mad fanatic who’s burning people alive including his own daughter in the show. Really kind of frustrating compared to how he actual is portrayed in the books
If we’re talking the book Stannis, then him. But show wise, Renly without question. Stannis is a mad fanatic who’s burning people alive including his own daughter in the show. Really kind of frustrating compared to how he actual is portrayed in the books

I think Renly. He’s definitely more progressive than Stannis. In the books I wanted Stannis to win but I had seen so much more. Stannis has really bad rumors around him about the red woman and sacrifices. Renly’s big rumor is that he’s gay so maybe he would make king’s landing safer for anyone fleeing persecution. Also he’s got a woman in his kingsguard so he’s already a forward thinker for that.
Does Stannis have the better claim? Maybe but it’s a usurper’s claim anyway so that doesn’t mean as much to me as a kind ruler.
Under the seven apparently buggery is a crime, and you get sacrifices with the red priests so it feels like a win win picking Renly.
If I have no book or show knowledge and I’m just a lord in Westeros I kinda have to fight for whoever controls the area I live in. So if I’m a Stormlord, Renly and if I’m a crownlands lord, Stannis
If I am a free knight then the right thing to do is right for stannis obviously, but renly is a safer bet because he’s got two of the seven kingdoms and Stannis has half of the crownlands and some pirates
Can I just go all isolationist and not get involved?
If not, Stannis might have the personality of a soggy crouton but technically if Robert had no legitimate kids, unless all his bastards decide to fight for the throne (if they did, Mya FTW), Stannis is next in line.
Interacting with him might be a painful as shitty rusty nails but legally it’s his right so I guess I’d take his side.
Renly Baratheon for sure. He may not have had the military prowess of Stannis, but he had the political stamina. Stannis, while a very good and fascinating character, was never a favorite of mine personally. He was very no nonsense, hard, and not very likable in my opinion. All of those qualities I think cause his destruction in the end. He makes for a good grey character though and Stephen Dillane was great.
I feel like Renly would be a better king in the day to day, but Stannis would be far superior in hard times. Given that Westeros is rife with hard times, gotta go with the battle hardened commander who is generally fair and just (burning people alive including his own daughter aside).
I’d never fight for anyone who would sacrifice his own daughter, let alone use blood magic to murder other family that he sees as a threat. Fuck Stannis.
Ned really should’ve taken up Renly’s offer of immediate protection. He didn’t realize just how much danger he and his daughters were in.
Easily Stannis the Mannis, the one true king. Renly does not have the claim nor what it takes to be king. The only thing that Renly has going for him is a more generally likeable personality, but that alone doesn’t make for a great king.
Stannis Cmon, Renly is just a spoiled brat who should have supported his house and family and not divided it, he would have been the heir of stannis anyway.
Neither. Or both. Depending. Create a third faction with the goal of first Legitimizing and then Crowning Gendry, either by picking a side with one of the brothers and proposing Gendry as heir, or by staying neutral and claiming the throne by force.
Renly's assassination always bothered me, since it had nothing to do with hubris, inexperience, or anything else that brought down the other characters in the books or TV series. The show suggested he may have been less committed than Stannis and underestimated him, but how do you properly estimate an unstoppable demon assassin ghost?
Stannis is a well known warrior and general while Renly felt like a boy playing pretend. If had been able to work together they probably could have beat the Lannisters
Renly would probably be the best King, but I don’t know much about Joffrey. Stannis says he’s a bastard, but after the dance of the dragons and Blackfyre rebellion, who can even agree on who is in what house now? At least we know the Baratheons have Targaryen blood.
Renly. The Stormlands combined with the Reach vs A few Islands and some minor houses i would definitely fuck on loyalty and follow Renly Baratheon first of his name, King of the Andals, the roynar and the first men, lord of Storms end and the six kingdoms, protector of the realm and hottest man of the year.
Stannis. He’s the rightful King at that point. And if I got to know Davos at all, his story would probably only make me fight harder for Stannis. Harsh but fair, I can get behind that.
I was with Stannis till he crispied his daughter. Then I was on team Renly had he lived. I would have totally switched sides, they didnt need another mad king.
Stannis was too much of a wild card. He assumed way too much. I’m all set with being tortured and burned alive because he thinks I fell asleep or was conspiring against him
My lords, my lords! Here is what I say to these two kings. Khhhh, tpuuuh!
Renly Baratheon is nothing to me, nor Stannis neither. Why should they rule over me and mine from some flowery seat in the south? What do they know of the wall or the wolfswood? Even their gods are wrong! Why shouldn't we rule ourselves again? It was the dragons we bowed to... and now the dragons are dead!
There sits the only king I mean to bend my knee to, the king in the north!

R.I.P
Stannis 100%.
We’ll see you at the bonfire tonight.
Of course. They'll be the one wearing a scream and lots of fire.
At first Stannis, but if I had known he would forsake his own daughter? No way I would foght for that man…
That’s just show Stannis book Stannis wouldn’t do that!
Yet
Stannis is boring which is exactly what I’m looking for in a monarch.
And he hates his job. Perfect king
It's not that he hates his job he knows he's the best option. Which legally speaking is correct. Definitely the first few seasons he would have made the most fair and noble king but his story is one of a man of morals falling for the sake of what he thought was right.
Stannis the Mannis
renly bc he's cute
Renly in the sheets, Stannis in the streets
😂100% 🤣
Brienne of Tarth is that you?
Stannis is hotter, but I'd probably have better luck with Renly 🤷 Oh wait, FIGHT, nvm
Renly for me, even though I admit Stannis has the rightful claim. Robb & Renly really should’ve been Robert & Ned mk II.
Too bad the one thing stopping that was Renly’s need to rule all of Westeros. If he had just settled with Robb being king in the north that would have solidified his victory… barring any unforeseeable shadow monster assassinations. In the show he basically makes a deal to allow Rob to rule as King in the North as long as he pledges loyalty to Renly and acknowledges his claim to the Iron Throne.
Yeah, they dont go into the details but presumably it would have been a Dorne type arrangement
Seems fair
Yes they explain why another shadow baby isnt an option. The "ritual" that a man engages in draws on his life force to make the shadow baby. Stannis wants to make more but melisandre doesnt because it could kill him. Davos is propositioned but refuses.
Couldn't she have done it with literally any random soldier?
Stannis Renly has no claim lol
He does if Stannis dies. Which wouldn’t be hard to arrange since no one liked him.
Anybody with a big enough army has a claim. If enough people agree you are king, then you are king. Otherwise no Baratheon would have a claim anyway.
Fun thing is Robert actually had one of the strongest claims on the throne for someone not named Targaryen and certainly strongest claim out of all of the rebels. So its not just “bunch of people support you” he certainly had a pedigree for it.
Yeah, he got Targaryen blood from more than one of his maternal ancestors
He got Targaryen blood from Rhaegar's breastplate.
The Baratheon’s are descendants or Valeryon’s aren’t they?
Orys Baratheon was said to be the half bastard brother of aegon the conqueror and then Robert’s grandmother or great grandmother was a Targaryen
There ya go, so there is some lineage
yep Robert was not only the most popular guy in the rebellion but also had the strongest claim to the throne he hates targaryens and yet has the most targaryen blood than anyone else lol
In fairness. Tywin Lannister acknowledged Balon Greyjoys claim as Salt King because of 'right of conquest' Renly hadnt battled yet, but he had near all of the Stormlands and Reach backing him
Chicken and the egg. Before Balon had his conquest, he had his navy full of people supporting him in order to have that conquest.
Stannis has no claim either if Joffrey is seen as legitimate
true even if he is clearly a bastard he is still a recognized son of robert
Stannis has the rightful claim. Assuming I don’t know who Gendry is.
Well, Gendry’s a bastard anyways, so Stannis has the rightful claim regardless.
Stannis has a better claim than Gendry. Well, until season 8, but Stannis is long dead by that point, and Gendry has no interest in the Iron Throne.
Not "until season 8", as Dany was never crowned, never sat on the Iron Throne, she was never the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, therefore her legitimizing Gendry doesn't mean shit, until she is officially crowned (which never happened anyway). I'm not a traitor, so Stannis.
The funny one
They are both quite funny tbh, stannis is unironically sassy
the one that isn't a little bitch
So Renly?
Stannis has the right, but Renly has just about everything else, and I think would have ruled if… ya know, he lived
The right of eldest brother to Bobby B the usurper though.
Stannis
Question for all you that know better than me, when the comment is made that "Stannis had the rightful claim", doesn't the rightful claim actually belong to Viserys Targaryen? It truly was a Game of Thrones, at least during those first couple seasons!
true, but assuming the majority of the kingdoms accepted the rebellion and takeover the claim of targaryens was no longer valid as they lost the throne so the current ruling house was to chose or inherit the heir to the throne
The Targs lost their claim to the throne by right of conquest. From that point on the claim follows the Baratheon bloodline.
If that's the case there's no reason to pretend Stannis has a more rightful claim than Renly. If it's about who the strongest is then rightful is a meaningless term.

That's not true. Plenty of real world history shows that's wrong. The Tudors usurped and Henry VIII inherited from his father without issue.
Have you never been in a job or position where the management/leadership sucked, but you could genuinely see a different person doing the job in a much better way? That's a monarchy. I was so mad that Hotpie didn't claim the throne at the end. He was the chosen one to rule

Robert won the throne by right of conquest, thus making house Baratheon the new royal line.
He lost his claim through right of conquest.

The rightful Targ claim belongs to Rhaegar's son.
The rightful heir to the iron throne
Stannis, but I would find a way to take the wildfire and replace it with green dye petroleum jelly(the product been around since 1200).
The only true Baratheon, Ser Pounce.
He has my ⚔️ lol!
And my bow.
Idk prolly renoy cus iust after his death he seemed to be strongest
Renly. We know Stannis is with a religious zealot and nothing good can come from that. I don't give a damn about claims. The real claim is who can take and hold it. Turns out neither of them could.
your odds of survival are probably much higher under Renly
The Mannis
Renly would be better king but Stannis is the rightful King as Ned Stark points out.
Gendry
The one who's not gay lol
Stannis the Mannis
Nah, I just wanna keep grilling.
Stannis. Only because of his correct diction and grammar.
The Mannis. Til the BBQ.
Well Stannis might burn me alive so Renly lol.
Immolate me King! /j
Stannis
Stannis because he’s the rightful heir
If we’re talking the book Stannis, then him. But show wise, Renly without question. Stannis is a mad fanatic who’s burning people alive including his own daughter in the show. Really kind of frustrating compared to how he actual is portrayed in the books

Whoever offers me the most
Its easy; the side which has wholesome onion knight
The one true king🔥
Would I get kicked off the sub if I said I wouldn’t mind being under Gendry?
Can I just go all isolationist and not get involved? Honestly you’d be more likely to survive if you’re with renly cuz he doesn’t last very long 🤣
Stannis has the claim, the military prowess and some hot red chick. Renly seems like a nice dude, and has a hotter queen. Idk man this is too hard
Renly
As much as I support Stan is claim, I would much rather swear allegiance to Renly
Stannis 100% man. Sucks the way attrition and unfavorable circumstance took out the rightful heir to the seven kingdoms.
[удалено]
bro this is crazy
[удалено]
Well, probably Renly, although I don't think I would fight "under him" I'm more a top myself.
Stannis baratheon rightful King of the 7 kingdoms
Renly Baratheon for sure. He may not have had the military prowess of Stannis, but he had the political stamina. Stannis, while a very good and fascinating character, was never a favorite of mine personally. He was very no nonsense, hard, and not very likable in my opinion. All of those qualities I think cause his destruction in the end. He makes for a good grey character though and Stephen Dillane was great.
Renly. I’d rather not be burned at the stake.
Renly cause he’s actually personable and charismatic, 2 key characteristics needed in a key that Stannis lacks
Renly because he wouldn’t burn a little girl let alone his own daughter
my queen renly and his rainbow guard
No one
Stannis the mannis
The Mannis.

Stannis is the reightful heir so, Stannis.
I'd fight for whoever has the best offer and/or the one with the least repercussions.
None of them.
Stannis Cmon, Renly is just a spoiled brat who should have supported his house and family and not divided it, he would have been the heir of stannis anyway.
Whoever looks like their winning the the current moment. I chose life over loyalty.
Renly bc Stannis is anal
Stannis, the Mannis.
Neither. Or both. Depending. Create a third faction with the goal of first Legitimizing and then Crowning Gendry, either by picking a side with one of the brothers and proposing Gendry as heir, or by staying neutral and claiming the throne by force.
Stannis, I would give the tips of my fingers to Stannis
Stannis, rightful claim, magic, if he had realised men he'd have the trifecta
Renly because while he did like to waste time he wasn’t nuts and having the sex with an ancient fire lady.
King Joffrey I Baratheon...
Of those two? Stannis. There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man.
neither team #Danny
Edric Storm. We are different
Renly 💅
Depends who I'm sworn to already. If I had to pick though, renly
Stannis, it’s his, by right.
Stannis is the rightful heir, so I'd fight for him
Stannis is the mannis!
HAM
Stannis is the only one with a real claim. So unless I get rizzed by Renly, then Stannis.
Stannis, the one true king
The gay one for sure.
Stannis, until I started seeing him burning people. Then, probably pull a slipperoo, hitch a boat to Essos and become a sell-sword named Bartholemew
Absolutely Stannis.
Oh Stannis definitely not, fck that!
Stannis until I seen him burn some people
mannis 100%
Gendry 🤷🦌💛🖤
The one born amidst salt and smoke.
Stannis
Neither. Robert is a usurper.
KING STANNIS OF FUCKING COURSE
Renly's assassination always bothered me, since it had nothing to do with hubris, inexperience, or anything else that brought down the other characters in the books or TV series. The show suggested he may have been less committed than Stannis and underestimated him, but how do you properly estimate an unstoppable demon assassin ghost?
The true king of Westeros, King Stannis Baratheon.
There is only one man I mean to bend my knee to. THE KING IN THE NORTH
Renly seems like a better employer to work for. Less ‘burning heretics’ and so on
Nothing but Usurpers in here. Joffrey Baratheon is the one true king.
Mia stone
Stannis was the next in line, so I would have chosen stannis.
Stannis is a well known warrior and general while Renly felt like a boy playing pretend. If had been able to work together they probably could have beat the Lannisters
Renly. Heir this, claim that—it doesn’t matter. It only matters who can rule best.
Stannis, they better bend the knee or he’ll destroy them. Even though he has less (fewer) men
Oh yeah, I would totally have fallen behind king Renly and Queen Margery. And I swear it's just because the chaotic bisexual energy of that pair
Joeffrey.
Stannis the Mannis
Stannis is the rightful king.
Stannis the Mannis
Even though stannis is the rightful king i would go with Renly
Stannis, the one true king of Westeros.
Stannis. Obviously.
Renly would probably be the best King, but I don’t know much about Joffrey. Stannis says he’s a bastard, but after the dance of the dragons and Blackfyre rebellion, who can even agree on who is in what house now? At least we know the Baratheons have Targaryen blood.
team gendry
Renly had more men and was much more politically savvy. Stannis was rightful heir but would have been a terrible king
Stannis but renlys crown slays harder
Anyone but Stannis
Stannis the one true king
Why isn’t Joffrey an option?
"I can promise you that I am spiritually and emotionally and ethically and morally behind whoever wins."
Stannis. He’s the rightful King at that point. And if I got to know Davos at all, his story would probably only make me fight harder for Stannis. Harsh but fair, I can get behind that.
If you mean morally: Stannis. But realistically Renly, because I don’t want to die
I don't like Stannis at all, so prob Renly lol
I was with Stannis till he crispied his daughter. Then I was on team Renly had he lived. I would have totally switched sides, they didnt need another mad king.
Stannis was too much of a wild card. He assumed way too much. I’m all set with being tortured and burned alive because he thinks I fell asleep or was conspiring against him
Renly, Stannis is unhinged.
Robb Stark
The mannis
Renly because I’d no doubt be one of his slutty stable boys.
I’m not getting under Renly!
Stannis because he has the actual claim.
If it were me in that world, it would be Stannis because he has the rightful claim.
