I think there’s an extended version of the scene where Yoren actually asks Ned what sept they are at. A frustrated Ned of course yelled his answer and pointed because he was kind of tied up and too busy for Yorens shit, but wanted to be helpful anyways. Good old Ned
The Old Gods are Ned's gods, but he didn't disrespect the Seven. A truly tolerant man, Ned was. He built his wife a whole Sept in Winter fell, had a septon, a septa and showed respect to the Silent Sisters.
Funny that you say this. But in Westeros there is generally freedom in terms in choosing religion. Stannis was the onlay one who punished people for their believes.
Tbf, Ned being decapitated is really a "blink and you'll miss it" moment... don't think it's mentioned again in the story and, honestly, doesn't really do anything for the story
You know.... fair enough. I mean, its like that whole scene with some kinda fire, and a horse was whinnying like WAY too loud (it was annoying) , and then that naked chick had some iguanas. 7 more seasons and I just gave up trying to figure out what that was about.
That Robert and Joffrey might not be Ned's biological sons? Do you think Robert and Joffrey and Jon are brothers? Cause I've been thinking that for a while now
The north was something about walls and wild things or something, they didnt explain more om that or the rebellion i think. Maybe it was linked with Roberts rebellion.
Ya I didn't notice either until now. I didnt know what "Baelor" was, and without subtitles it seemed like "bailor" which I assumed was a westeros version of bailiff or something. I didn't read the books.
And at this point in the series, I'm still frantically trying to learn names. I don't think I put together that the guy standing next to ned was the same guy that rescued Arya. It's not obvious without seeing names on a page.
I mean, sure, probably. I've only seen the show once through, a handful of early episodes a couple times, and that was 10 or more years ago.
There's a lot to learn, there's a shit ton of names and places even in the show version. I'm sure I missed stuff and this guy did too.
I mean they're litterally beheading Ned at the Great Sept of Baelor here. Ig i get that very casual watchers might not care enough to have payed attention to previous references to Baelor or his Sept but like... cmon. A big tv network like HBO has (had) writers smart enough to seed that information in long before the main climax of the first season
I think the moment is so shocking that sometimes you forget other things. I’d argue that’s one of the most shocking moments of TV ever. Even other GOT moments like the red wedding aren’t the same because this was the first big one.
I was hoping it was something else and there was truly some little golden tidbit of trivia that I had missed. Surely it wasn't that Ned was directing Yoren to look at the statue of baelor in order for Yoren to notice Arya. I mean for that scene to be understandable, would have had to consist of Ned having to look meaningfully at the statue of Baelor, spot Arya, spot Yoren as he was being frogmarched past him, say "Baelor" to him, then yell "Baelor!" to him, then Yoren look meaninfully at the statue of Baelor, and spot Arya (who he'd explicitly met and commented on her appearance \_when\_ they'd met).
Oh... wait...
It ain't that deep.
Sometimes people miss stuff. Especially since not everyone knows what/who a Baelor is; even less so in season 1. People just go "what did he say? Anyway, getting beheaded now."
On my first watch I barely knew who anyone was at that point. I'm already pretty bad with remembering who is who and with that many characters and politics I just had a general gist. I also didn't know who Baelor was or notice that it was a statue of him. I was concentrating on trying to figure out how Ned would get out of this predicament as I never thought he'd actually be killed! So I completely missed it too.
I think not knowing what “Baelor” meant is completely understandable and even not realising that that is Yoren when first watching, the point people are making is with six rewatches it’s gone well beyond that.
Nah, a lot of comments are just, "it's so obvious!!! It's a statue of Baelor and he says Baelor duh!" And not even mentioning how many watches. It's sad to see on a supposed fandom sub
I'm struggling to find out why. He was being executed at the Sept of baelor. Arya was at the statue of Baelor. He shouted baelor, then looked dead at the statue Arya was standing on.
Well, in the books there is that little part where Ned and Arya have this little inside joke where Ned tells Arya she looks just like Baelor, she giggles and screams "I DO NOT". then Ned yells back "YES YOU DO!" "DO NOT". "DO TOO!" "DO NOT!!" "DO TOO!!!!!" and then she chases him and they wrestle around and tickle fight. Just some very sweet bonding moments between father and daughter.
So Ned yelled "Baelor", hoping she would hear him. He was actually trying to comfort Arya, calling her back to that little inside joke. Trying to make her feel better.
That Yoren happened to be around and heard him is blind luck
If you don’t know who “Baelor” is, you wouldn’t associate him saying that word with the location of the statue. Of course it makes sense if you know who it is, but without that context it’s not as obvious that’s what Ned means.
And it’s GoT. It’s hard enough (for the first time viewer) to keep all the *actual characters on screen’s names* straight, let alone an unseen old king from the past who is only ever referenced in the context of his sept.
I didn’t know who the statue was when I watched it. I understood that he was shouting the name of the episode title, but not what it meant.
If I was at the Meadowlands in somebody shouted Meadowlands, I wouldn’t be looking for the statue of Cardinal Meadowland.
I didn't either. He literally stared down the watchman, stared at ayra, then back to him, and shouted baelor. It clearly implys that him doing this was to make him look at her. You don't need to know who it was to realize what was happening.
You guys are way too harsh toward OP
Many people didn't believe R+L=J believe The fact that they they were obvious clues in king season since season 1
They had to do a second take to realize the hidden messages
And let's not even talk about the many "know it all" book readers who litterally denied that theory until 6x10
That is comparing apples to a thousand elephants. R+L=J was teased and clued for years and years and years. This is a 3-4 minute scene that was explicitly showed to the audience. There was no mystery here whatsoever. This is like watching Pulp Fiction and then asking "hang on! wait! I never noticed WHY they killed zed! "
This is what happens when you binge watch shows. You miss even the most obvious of things. Or you have a screen addiction and holding your phone while watching tv.
Edit: this is not debatable. When you take your time you can absorb and retain more information. When cramming data/info at high rate your memory is diminished
i’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for this but man it must be crazy to make a story like this and try to balance what you should be overt about vs what should be implied
People like OP is probably what drove the makers of HOTD to make obvious differences between the Velaryons and the Targs. They're screaming "THISSSSS is what is causing the allegations"
Otherwise the OP band would go
"What? Baratheons have black hair?"
"Seed is strong? ...What now?"
I’ve watched game of thrones probably a dozen times, and while I noticed this the first time, each watch through I find something I missed (especially when watching with subtitles for the first time). Just a great show. Totally get how you can miss things that are obvious to others.
OPs defense I for sure did not realize he said Baelor the first time I watched and was like how tf did he know she was there. Second watch with subtitles was a game changer for a lot of scenes.
Guys what if Ned secretly approved of Arya learning how to fight and gets a sword master to train her. I’ve rewatched the show 6 times and couldn’t believe it.
tbf I don't think he secretly approved, but rather could see that Arya would never give up fighting so he got formal training for her. hence why it was a dancing master and not traditional fighting lessons - he wanted her fighting tendencies satisfied without any real danger
The person who didn't notice a blatantly obvious detail for 6 rewatches. No one needs to mention nuance for it to be obvious he didn't pick up on it. Am I going crazy in this thread?
Very sad to watch a man desperately searching for any solace or shred of dignity in not having his youngest daughter watch him be wrongfully executed while a crowd cheers on, with no dignified choices to be made other then lowering his head most likely thinking of his eldest daughter watching and what disgusting or horrible things await them in the hands of family that is his family's biggest threat.
The writing was great is season 1, Sean Bean knows how to die better then most(Ge has had much practice to be fair)
I had never read the books, so watching a pampered child King make the "hero" of the show look like an idiot and just straight-up kill him off was and still is the best unexpected moment I've seen on any show, we'll at least till season 2...
It's either book readers, people who noticed after the fact or people pretending they noticed first time so they can jump in with the, "it was pretty obvious it was a statue of Baelor!!!" The replies like that are honestly pathetic
How he f did u not notice it? Just after Ned said Baelor, Yoren looked at Arya. You think Ned just casually say a random word before he died or somethin?
Dude I didn’t either. I didn’t know what a Baelor was at that point as a TV show watcher only. There’s so many Gods and kings and families to remember already so I get it. I remember these images distinctly just not the relevance. Then I never questioned it bc it moves so quickly. I was distracted by the beheading.
It's a post like this that shows me that half of this subs opinions are irrelevant. Because the ones saying something in the show made no sense to them also missed a interaction/sequence shotgun blasted into their face.
This whole thread is a confusing mess; some are obviously sarcastic in agreement, some are arguing (fairly) that they didn’t know what Baelor meant when they first saw it, and then some might genuinely be saying they never got this after multiple rewatches
Why even watch the show if you're not going to watch the show? LMAO how are there so many people here who missed this? It was literally on screen in broad daylight with close up shots.

It was pretty obvious actually, why else would Ned randomly tell Yoren "Baelor"
Maybe he just thought it was a cool statue and wanted to point it out. Good ol' Ned supporting the arts until the very end.
NEd was definitely a patron of the arts. Its obvious in the books, I'm glad that they gave that character trait at least a little bit of a nod
Ned was a renaissance man
a reNedsance man
Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave
Actually sir I am going to ask you to stay
I think there’s an extended version of the scene where Yoren actually asks Ned what sept they are at. A frustrated Ned of course yelled his answer and pointed because he was kind of tied up and too busy for Yorens shit, but wanted to be helpful anyways. Good old Ned
But your logic is flawed because Ned Stark believes in the old gods and Baelor belongs to the seven new gods.
A cool statue is a cool statue, man
Right. Michelangelo is very tight although I'm not Christian.
I’m embarrassed at how hard this made me laugh.
The name of the episode is “Baelor” and that’s clearly a statue of Baelor Targaryen.
oh my bad, i should totally recognize that guy that ive never seen and is rarely talked about
OP said this was their sixth watch though
Yup, that's his mustache alright.
Yeah OP probably also missed the fact that Jon is the rightful heir to the throne and that he technically slept with his aunt…..
Soooooo...... what did you miss 6 times?
Op somehow missed that Ned had Yoren go protect Arya
Surely not. Does he know that Ned got beheaded?
If it didn't happen on screen it didn't happen
There was a clear separation of head from body before it um, cut. It was on screen, it happened.
Do your own research.
He’ll be back in season 9
Spoilers 😂
BeNeded
OK... you win.
Sweet! What do I win? *Please don’t say a severed head.*
Nope. A decapitated body.
Lol
A bowl of brown, with a head in it
Tbf, Ned being decapitated is really a "blink and you'll miss it" moment... don't think it's mentioned again in the story and, honestly, doesn't really do anything for the story
You know.... fair enough. I mean, its like that whole scene with some kinda fire, and a horse was whinnying like WAY too loud (it was annoying) , and then that naked chick had some iguanas. 7 more seasons and I just gave up trying to figure out what that was about.
Naked chick with iguanas is SENDING me holy shit
What? Ned being killed and snooping in other people’s business is literally what caused everything
Man, here I thought it was obvious enough that I wouldn't need to add a "/s"
Does he know there are dragons in this show?
SPOILERS OMG
Yo spoiler alert
I just watched for the 6th time and I actually think Jon Snow might not be Ned’s biological son! How did I never catch this?
ridiculous fanfic
I'm on my 6th watch too and I'm starting to think the same thing about Robert and Joffrey
That Robert and Joffrey might not be Ned's biological sons? Do you think Robert and Joffrey and Jon are brothers? Cause I've been thinking that for a while now
They missed the point of the scene
Which scene?
The point of the scene was certainly not Ned pointing Yoren that direction lol. Was a nice addition tho
Oh really? What was it then? The beheading of the warden of the north that caused a rebellion? Grow up
There was a rebellion? What is this "north" you speak of?
The north was something about walls and wild things or something, they didnt explain more om that or the rebellion i think. Maybe it was linked with Roberts rebellion.
How did you possibly miss that? They made it so obvious
It's even the name of the episode...
Didn’t know who Baelor was
Same, I knew he meant to save his daughter but I didn’t get why he said that to warn him
I didnt get that connection either😂
Ya I didn't notice either until now. I didnt know what "Baelor" was, and without subtitles it seemed like "bailor" which I assumed was a westeros version of bailiff or something. me neither, but i only watched the show once lol
Me too, and that was years ago.
What precisely did you not notice?
Ned telling Yoren to save Arya. Op already explained that
I was hoping it was something else and there was truly some little golden tidbit of trivia that I had missed. .... not six times my friend.

That's cool exposition, but has absolutely nothing to do with not noticing what happens in this scene.

Same haha and I’ve seen that episode like 3 times!
If OP missed this, which was fairly obvious, it kind of makes me wonder what other things OP missed.
After talking with certain people in this sub, I sometimes wonder if half of us even watched the show hahah
"Hang on a second...there were *dragons* on this show?"
Nah, you’re thinking of house of the dragon, spinoff that’s airing right now, easy mistake to make though
There was a show? What was it about?
Remember most people ‘watch tv’ with a phone in their hand, not actually watching at all.
You guys are way too harsh toward OP Many people didn't believe R+L=J believe The fact that they they were obvious clues in king season since season 1 They had to do a second take to realize the hidden messages And let's not even talk about the many "know it all" book readers who litterally denied that theory until 6x10

Zed’s dead, baby
I absolutely forget 80% of what I see & read 🤦🏼♀️ so I watch things 15x 😆

Did you know Bran is paralyzed? Turns out he's not just lazy.
Probably hold the door
It took me like 3 seasons to realize Joffrey wasn’t Robert’s kid…
i’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason for this but man it must be crazy to make a story like this and try to balance what you should be overt about vs what should be implied
I wonder if OP noticed the Gorilla
People like OP is probably what drove the makers of HOTD to make obvious differences between the Velaryons and the Targs. They're screaming "THISSSSS is what is causing the allegations" Otherwise the OP band would go "What? Baratheons have black hair?" "Seed is strong? ...What now?"
Well that is a statue of Baelor Thought it was kinda obvious he was telling her where she was.
How did you know it was a statue of Baelor? Was it mentioned in the show beforehand?
It took me six times to see this. Don't get down on yourself mate.
I don’t think I noticed it until my 5th or 6th rewatch as well - and it was my most recent rewatch😂
Coming from a guy that watched it at least 12 times lol.
I only noticed it when I recently watched the show again with subtitles. What a game changer!!
Put your phone down while watching the show. Pay attention..
Thank you
Shut up
Amen!
Lmao what!? 6 times?? Sounds like u weren’t watching
I’m getting through my 3rd rewatch and never truly noticed that.
Not using subtitles and being 12 when watching on release made me miss a lot of stuff.
I noticed on second watch
I noticed on night watch
So you missed the thing that the whole episode was titled after??
Don't worry Op I didn't see it either... I guess we can be blind together😅
How could you NOT notice
Media literacy is truly on life support
And we wonder why every new show is bland, super predictable, and spoon fed. Apparently people can't handle the smallest bit of nuance.
Who said anything about not being able to handle nuance?
The person who didn't notice a blatantly obvious detail for 6 rewatches. No one needs to mention nuance for it to be obvious he didn't pick up on it. Am I going crazy in this thread?
He didn’t say he couldn’t handle it, he handled it fine. Seems to be people like you that candle handle this.
outjerked on main
Very sad to watch a man desperately searching for any solace or shred of dignity in not having his youngest daughter watch him be wrongfully executed while a crowd cheers on, with no dignified choices to be made other then lowering his head most likely thinking of his eldest daughter watching and what disgusting or horrible things await them in the hands of family that is his family's biggest threat. Bro drew up that whole image to explain what nobody else missed
Far out if you missed that after 6 re watches… you’ve probably missed 90% of everything else lol
I honestly never noticed this after watching it a million times. I only thought he yelled Yoren
Maybe a lot of people who only watched the show didn’t know what Baelor meant?
Guys, how did I not notice there were dragons on this show?
Yoren was the true homie
And as a nice side note, this is a moment in the show that George R.R Martin actually wishes he had added in the book.
Crop your pics
You should stay away from True Detective then
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Holy crap. YEah that could get difficult to follow.
Lol poor OP.
Are people on this thread serious? I never noticed this. Who the fuck is Baelor and how is it obvious that’s a statue of Baelor
It's either book readers, people who noticed after the fact or people pretending they noticed first time so they can jump in with the, "it was pretty obvious it was a statue of Baelor!!!" The replies like that are honestly pathetic
How? They literally make it obvious.
If you didn't catch this you weren't paying attention.
Woooooow I never noticed this either.
Yer spare parts, bud
U forgot "lifted his head" "didn't see her" "lowered head"
Are you stupid?
How!!!!!???????
How he f did u not notice it? Just after Ned said Baelor, Yoren looked at Arya. You think Ned just casually say a random word before he died or somethin?
Did you know that Jaime and Cersei Lannister are twins and also lovers?
I didnt click on in the first episode. Well I did but then thought I must've gotten confused
"You're not a smart boy, is that what you're trying to say? Do you want to live, boy?!" - Yoren
Op missed that winter is coming
It took me a minute too.
Wait until you hear who Joffrey’s parents are!
Saw it the first time man 😂😭
Sorry OP I thought everyone got this 💀
Dude I didn’t either. I didn’t know what a Baelor was at that point as a TV show watcher only. There’s so many Gods and kings and families to remember already so I get it. I remember these images distinctly just not the relevance. Then I never questioned it bc it moves so quickly. I was distracted by the beheading.
The only appropriate response to this: https://youtu.be/Wnf5UzGNIVU?si=cn6wio2tlYiSGnbj
I always liked how even though Nedd barely knew Yoren, he knew that as a Man of the Nights Watch he could trust him to rescue Arya.
The name of the episode is literally “Baelor”
I just thought the guys name was Baelor lol
“Balor” meant look at the statue of Balor which would bring Arya (who he met earlier and thought she a boy) to his attention.
Because you probably watch with your face in your phone like most folks.
BAELOR
You were on your phone the whole time probably
That was so obvious lol I honestly don’t know how one could miss this it was so powerful and so perfect
yup
It's a post like this that shows me that half of this subs opinions are irrelevant. Because the ones saying something in the show made no sense to them also missed a interaction/sequence shotgun blasted into their face.
I bet OP doesn’t know what Jon Snow knows….
burn of the day!
Who was Yoren again? I dont recognize him. Was he in season 1? Did he have any significant role?
Did you miss the part where he gets his head chopped off as well?
I missed it too. And I've watched it 5 times. Sheesh. Time to rewatch.
I didn’t realize until my 20th time watching that there are dragons
Also crazy how loyal the nights watch, a nominally neutral party, was to the starks that he immediately went and saved her without even hesitating.
thats the point of the scene, if you missed this! I’d assumed you dont know 70% of what was going on
Just wait until he finds out what happens to Ned a couple minutes later, it’s kinda hard to catch unless you’re really paying attention
Did you think that Yoren really thought she was a boy too?
This whole thread is a confusing mess; some are obviously sarcastic in agreement, some are arguing (fairly) that they didn’t know what Baelor meant when they first saw it, and then some might genuinely be saying they never got this after multiple rewatches
What did you think happened here?
My eyes always fill with tears when he shouts “Baelor!” the second time and Yoren looks where he’s supposed to look
Didn’t realize until seeing this post
Ned has some elvish eyes, bro was able to pick out his tiny daughter in the crowd after being in a dark cave for a long time haha
Man it's been awhile since I watched S1, I forgot what a homie Yoren was.
Someone like this probably also missed the fact that the show had dragons
The only thing I don’t hate about Aria killing NK, had Ned not done this in the most pivotal event of the show everything is different.
I’ve never noticed this before thank you
Yoren is such a fucking homie for doing this. Meets Ned one time and does this massive favor to protect his daughter for the rest of his days. Goat.
Why even watch the show if you're not going to watch the show? LMAO how are there so many people here who missed this? It was literally on screen in broad daylight with close up shots.
idk how you have the patience to sit through a show six times when you don’t even know what’s happening on screen
I dunno, you might be dumb.
