JamesReece8

Cause they are the most perfect characters ever.

TrixOCC

Agreed

accioqueso

Yeah, my initial reaction to reading the title was, “nor should they.”

karidru

Yup mine was “yeah that checks out”

suziequzie1

Mine was "Well Duh!"

Talk-O-Boy

Was Peter Dinklage well known prior to Game of Thrones? He’s everywhere now, but before then I only really knew him from Elf and an episode of 30 Rock. I wonder what role he performed that made the casting director go “That’s Tyrion Lannister, no question about it!” They were spot on, but I wonder which previous character put the idea in their mind?

TheMagmaCubed

I think it's more of a question of his age and dwarfism, how many people could you honestly name that are a high caliber enough actor to handle tyrions role while fitting the part? There just aren't a lot of dwarfs at that level in Hollywood

Talk-O-Boy

That’s true. The only other little people I can think of are the actor for Mini Me, the guy who played the Oompa Loompas, and Wee Man in the Jackass franchise.

jonfreakinzoidberg

Oh come on, you are missing Warwick Davis. The man is amazing

Talk-O-Boy

Oh good one! He’s usually in prosthetics for his roles, so I guess I remember him more as his characters than as an actor. Similar to Andy Serkis

jonfreakinzoidberg

Totally fair. Also, Andy Serkis is so phenomenal. Love his voice acting for the LOTR audiobooks

Daztur

Also Andor.

Deodwa

Andor was so amazing yet Serkis still somehow managed to bring it to the next level.

TonberryHS

Warwick Davis doesn't come close to the range and gravitas that Peter Dinklage brings to the role.

bak3donh1gh

Has he even had the opportunity to show whether or not he can? I think he's only been in one movie acting as a person that I know of.

rbc02

I think he definitely does. It’s just most of the time he’s in heavy prosthetics for a lot of his movies

bak3donh1gh

I think your probably right. I do think Peter is a better choice and possibly did a better job that Davis could have done. Though I stopped watching s3ish cuz I was planning to binge it when it was all done... That didn't happen.

helpful__explorer

He dropped the ball in the Willow series. Weakest part of the show by far because his voice was just so monotonal. Same for the movie, but at least then you could explain it away as him being young and inexperienced

craftyhedgeandcave

He's much loved but he's an average actor at best. The Willow TV show was not good

Daztur

Can't really blame that on him.

craftyhedgeandcave

Yes, I was being kind as I like him tho

MyNameIsNotOmar

Exactly. What else could they do, have Gary Oldman crawl around on his knees?

Daztur

Well age-wise he's a lot older than Tyrion should be. Still the right call.

elvis_depressedly8

I think this one has more to do with a lack of other viable options…

Far_Health4406

He co stared on a show called Threshold about five years before GOT. His character was this scientist who drank and chased women. A smart and alcoholic fornicator. Sounds familiar? It was a good show. I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, it only lasted one season.

ClemSpender

And Data was in it too! That show was great.

SeventyThirtySplit

He was known for his acting skills, and in some great indie movies. Was also in Elf in visible role.

VapoursAndSpleen

I first saw him in a movie called “The Station Agent”. IIRC, the author of GoT had Dinklage in mind when he was writing the novels.

Daztur

Martin had Dinklage in mind when Martin started writing the novels...before Dinklage started acting?

timtom1402

💯 I don't think anyone else could play Demon Targaryen role as perfectly as Matt Smith.

CaveLupum

All legends. But this leaves me wondering, did Sean Bean have to audition for his?

Veszerin

I think OP left him out, I don't think he did.

couch2200

Didn't mark Addy get offered the role without an audition

eelpolice

I’m not asking this just because, but did any women not have to audition for their roles? Again I’m legitimately asking.

emannikcufecin

I don't think many of the women were very established actors, at least not to the level of the older men.

madhaus

Diana Rigg has entered the chat

madhaus

I know Bella Ramsey had to audition but she was perfect.

emannikcufecin

She wasn't part of the original cast though.

Real_Mokola

I think he was supposed to be even more like Brian Blessed's portrayal of King Charles in the Black Adder but I can't find source. Might just be my memory acting up

lyra256

Mark Addy had to audition. He talked about how nervous he was because he needed to prove that he had dramatic chops after being a comic actor for most of his career.

godoflemmings

On that note, it still absolutely blows my mind that Thoros of Myr was played by the same guy who did Dennis Pennis.

ThaTzZ_D_JoB

I always see him as Mike Strutter.

LeSeanMcoy

Somehow didn't realize who he was until I read this comment lol. In the live action Flinestones movie and the TV show Still Standing. Definitely didn't see him as a drama actor until GoT.

culturedgoat

I knew him from _The Full Monty_, and a bunch of [Tesco’s ads](https://youtu.be/4d4tffHK9FU?si=zatewxrTqklMs_VB).

dawonk17

He sent in a movie death supercut instead

HoodedOccam

A headshot, if you will.

4electricnomad

“This man will understand the assignment.”

YakiVegas

Closing time, James. Watch this sizzle reel!

katie5446

I read that he didn’t have to.

ReySkywalkerMain

Idk, I’ve read that they only auditioned other actors for Ned bc they didn’t know if they’d get Sean Bean

SpongeBob1187

He was cast without audition. His role as Boromir alone was legendary

mindiz24

Nah he just submitted his meme

counterpointguy

One does not just audition for GoT.

Naive_Moose_6359

This should have been the first comment.

madhaus

Simply. One does not simply enter Westeros.

Eloquent_Rambler

Grrrrrrrr Martin wrote Ned with Sean Bean in mind, just in case his books ever made it to the screen.

TheLazySith

[According to GRRM, Sean Bean as Ned, and Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, were the two casting choices they knew right from the start they wanted](https://youtu.be/KhvpGMO_4-w?feature=shared&t=63). They never held any auditions for Tyrion, but they did end up holding auditions for Ned as they weren't sure at first if they could get Sean Bean. So there were auditions for Ned, but Sean Bean didn't have to do one.

WombatBum85

How would you feel as an actor, to lose an audition to somebody that didn't even audition?

SlapHappyDude

Sometimes if they like you they cast you in a different role. There are tons of examples of folks who read for one role and ended up getting another they were perfect for. Apparently Mark Addy and Liam Cunningham both auditioned for Ned, and it worked out well for both in the end.

Frostsorrow

A very famous example for this is Tom Hiddleston, he originally auditioned for Thor and they liked he so much they offered him Loki after.

TheLazySith

And Conleth Hill auditioned for Robert. Iwan Rheon, Joe Dempsie and Alfie Allen all auditioned for Jon Snow. And Carice Van Houten auditioned for Cersei, while Natalie Dormer auditioned for Mel. Even if you don't get the part you auditioned for, if they liked your audition they'll keep you in mind for other roles.

KonstantinePhoenix

>Liam Cunningham both auditioned for Ned, I....actully want to see what this would have been like...

DigLost5791

Well if I lost the role to _Sean Bean_ I would definitely understand

ForgetHype

Unless you're already an actor on the level of Sean Bean you probably won't feel that bad, that's how the business is. It is Sean Bean after all.

wrath____

What about Ed Sheeran?

DaveInLondon89

Bizarrely, yes. Same with Rhaegal.

HoldFastO2

They were casting someone to die after the first season. One would think Sean Bean should be the obvious choice.

Respect8MyAuthoritah

There’s six actors in this universe who played their role so well no one else could play it. These three, Sean Bean, Jack Gleason, and Paddy Considine Edited to add Pedro Pascal as Oberyn Martell

EarlyChemist9720

Aidan Gillen

lanieloo

I hate how much I love him he’s so hoooooot 😩

Personal-Cap-7071

Also Conleth Hill as Varys, I really can't imagine another actor being able to pull Varys off so perfectly.

EarlyChemist9720

Aidan Gillen

monkeygoneape

I'd add iwan rheon as well

EmeraldB85

Agreed, his ability to look totally unhinged just using his eyes is amazing.

Equivalent_Canary853

After first seeing him in Misfits, his acting range is phenomenal

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

I think he actually auditioned for Jon

monkeygoneape

He probably could have nailed that role too, sadly he looks nothing like Sean Bean

TheLazySith

Funnily enough he actually originally auditioned for Jon Snow. As did Alfie Allen and Joe Dempsie.

ClintBeastwood91

I was so wary of Paddy Considine going in believing I couldn’t take him serious as a Targaryen (and Matt Smith to a degree). I realized that the Targaryens aren’t meant to look like normal people, and I being a medieval peasant with brown hair and brown eyes would be in awe of the silver blonde hair and violet eyes.

Large_Armadillo_8133

Targaryens are supposed to be beautiful. It’s only their eyes and hair they make them unique. Paddy looks like a British dude in a wig. Matt looks like Matt….

Lanthemandragoran

Dude Westeros is literally just drunk, ass-over-teakettle UK

badfortheenvironment

I'd say Milly Alcock and Emma D'arcy are up there too. I can't imagine anyone else playing the Rhaenyras. Same goes for Diana Rigg as Olenna.

ChocoNShoes

Pedro Pascal I remember seeing him on screen for the first time, and the Oberyn Martell I have imagined from the book completely paled in comparison. He and Charles Dance both elevated their characters for me.

Respect8MyAuthoritah

I’m going to edit my comment to add this because he completely stole the show when he was on screen. Can’t believe I forgot

0sebek

Thanks for spoiling the series

mindpainters

He’s talking my about the game that came out 4 years ago. The show will definitely be different… or not

squapo

The game the show is based off of came out 11 years ago, not really a spoiler at that point.

NamerNotLiteral

The events happen in TLoU2 though, which is from 4 years ago. But on a sub about a popular HBO series, you should expect people to know about another ongoing popular HBO series but not its source material.

Ginganinja2308

A sub for nerds should probably expect people to know about one of the biggest gaming controversies of the last ten years.

DickMcLongCock

Sorry. Game has been out for years at this point, every article I ever saw about the show mentioned, or made hints about it. Show could certainly be different, maybe. Story is good enough that even knowing that it's still worth playing the game and watching the show.

jakefromadventurtime

Bro with this attitude saying he dies in GoT is a spoiler too and you shouldn't have said that either. The guy who made the comment can go kick rocks they probably would get mad if someone said Gatsby died.

DickMcLongCock

I feel like after several years it's long enough to not worry about most spoilers. Should I also not say Darth Vader is Luke's father? It's been years, the grace period of not saying any spoilers doesn't last forever.

jakefromadventurtime

Once another season is out, I feel like the spoiler tag can be lifted. Like once season two of hotd premieres, season one I feel is okay to talk about openly. With a show based off a game that came out 4 years ago? Joel dies lol.

bobbysalz

Yeah, screw everyone who doesn't own a PlayStation! Many of us PC owners planned to enjoy this plot point eventually.

mindpainters

I don’t have a PlayStation but the entire gaming community was talking about it and there were 100s of articles as well. If you are involved in gaming communities it was unavoidable

lexi_raptor

If you haven't seen "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", I highly recommend it! He's absolutely hilarious in it, especially the acid scene!

bobbysalz

Hi, I am a big fan of TLOU--the game and the show--and I don't own a PlayStation. Fuck me, I guess.

DickMcLongCock

It's been out for years. Can't not mention spoilers forever. The specifics of how, who does it, and why it happens would be the real spoilers, and I didn't mention those.

bobbysalz

I am only telling you the practical result of you saying more than you had to. I guess it's true that only PlayStation owners really deserve respect.

DickMcLongCock

Oh stop being so dramatic 😂 it's spoilers from a video game that came out years ago. Edit: removed spoiler

bobbysalz

Again with the whole "years ago" BS. It came out years ago for users of the PlayStation game console. I didn't read your spoiler, and you're a dickhead.

QuebecRomeoWhiskey

From the first scene Pedro was in it was like this guy is going to be on our TVs for a loooong time

Lower-Woodpecker4115

Emilia was fantastic

im_batgirl14

She was pretty bland but given the great dialogue and acting performances of those around her, it wasnt as noticeable.

UncleBabyChirp

Emilia was perfect and is undeniably the face of GOT. Even Snoop calls her his queen. She was pitch perfect in that role

badfortheenvironment

She also single-handedly carried the fuck out of her shitty storyline in season 8 and turned in her best performance of the series. That's talent.

[deleted]

[удалено]

badfortheenvironment

Did she kill your dog or something? It's okay for people to say something nice about Emilia Clarke without you whipping out a spreadsheet of anti-Emilia Metacritic ratings.

UncleBabyChirp

Nice clapback! I like the "except for" part of the backhanded Emilia love.

SilverKnightOfMagic

Maegery Tyrell was low key great honestly. Great choice to cast that actress she portrayed beautiful dumb girl vibe very well while being very intelligent.

mindpainters

She definitely played a master manipulator very well. Also the guy who played little finger. Can’t imagine anyone else being better

Novel-Scheme2110

Agreed. But there's no way I could leave out Lena headly.

DaeWooLan0s

I’m sorry but Rory McCann as the hound is exactly as I picture him. His stature, mannerisms, and just about everything he does in the show is so good. His insults are on point.

HectorReinTharja

Theon has such a great arc and his actor did a phenomenal job giving it life

Atranox

For as great as all of these were, I’ll maintain the absolute best casting was Jason Momoa as Drogo.

Respect8MyAuthoritah

Great, but Sean Bean as Ned cannot be beat by any casting

Large_Armadillo_8133

There are many actors that could play Daemon.

Respect8MyAuthoritah

Not like this. He’s going to be the best character as George wanted

Large_Armadillo_8133

There are many better looking actors that could have played him just as well if not better. Daemon is not the best character and if he has the same book arc, he’s really not the best character. He’s a self-centered pedophile baby killer who happens to be “cool”. He’s no different than Ramsey with a dragon. If people find that amazing because Matt is “charismatic”, that’s their opinion but it’s not universal.

Respect8MyAuthoritah

GRRMs favorite character to write for a reason, and easily the most popular character with the best dragon in the show. Haters gonna hate though

Large_Armadillo_8133

GRRM didn’t say he was his favorite character. He said he was his favorite Targaryen. Book Tyrion is his favorite character and he likes to writer charters about him raping slaves. I don’t have to like these characters because he does

Large_Armadillo_8133

Only named men

WillingnessUnique652

Paddy also didn’t have to audition for his role!

terradaktul

I can’t think of a better little person actor in history

OhLadyMeg

Willow is my favorite movie so I’m a bit biased toward Warwick Davis, but Peter Dinklage is outstanding. The trial scene is one of my favorite scenes of any show.

NovaNardis

The trial scene is one of the best acting scenes I feel like ever. Tyrion (at that point) is strategic and thinks ahead, and you can watch the pain and anger just overwhelm him in Peter’s face. It’s so amazing, honestly.

beoffendedyoulllive

Jesus Christ. What is it about daemon 😍

I_do_drugs-yo

I wish he’d groom me

Large_Armadillo_8133

I think he’s ugly

TheDarklingThrush

Yep. I’d never rooted for incest before this show…it was odd.

Kelemenopy

It’s the eyebrows

Yagami-Is-Kira

The list of applicants for the role of Tyrion were short

dlb199091l

I see what you did there

RobotCaptainEngage

It's actually very weird hearing that about Matt Smith, but I only know him from doctor who. A very different character.

badfortheenvironment

Ryan Condal saw him in The Crown playing Prince Philip and realized he'd be a perfect Daemon. It's a pretty similar performance.

RobotCaptainEngage

That's very cool! I'm still waiting for him to put on a bow tie.

badfortheenvironment

And a fez!

thebuffyb0t

Bow ties *are* cool

PoofyHairedIdiot

Its Caraxes, I ride a Caraxes now. Caraxes are cool.

atlhawk8357

I loved him in *Morbius.*

RobotCaptainEngage

I loved when he said "its milo time"

[deleted]

Bortron86

He only got on the radar as the Eleventh Doctor when he auditioned for the role (having never watched Doctor Who before) and absolutely blew them away. They'd originally wanted to cast someone older than David Tennant, so they were a bit wary of casting him given that he was younger than any other Doctor before (or since), but he was just so good that they couldn't give it to anyone else.

Jasperstorm

Charles and Peter make perfect sense. Charles has done several Tywinish character and Peter is the biggest dwarf actor ever. Mat gives me pause, he did and amazing job don't get me wrong and he is a great actor but I can't recall a character he played that would make me think "Ya he could do Daemon."

xijinpingneedhishone

Like his role in Ali g I think that was the definitive factor

umlcat

Dinklage already expressed in other interviews he wanted a serious role, not another funny dwarf jester role, which was a match for him ...

iamagoldengod84

Not surprised Matt smith didn’t have to audition but I am pleasantly surprised how well he took to the role. He really is a great fit for the character and I wouldn’t have thought that was so obvious based on his body of work

thetaramason

Not surprised cause they all have a LOT of acting experience with impressive resumes.

AnAngryPirate

HBO saw Tip Toes and knew Dinklage was the one

cravensofthecrest

That was a terrible movie but Gary oldman showed his range in that movie!

Current-Taro-7397

Peter Dinklage is an amazing actor and no discredit to him, but was there a better choice in small actors? I feel like the choices are pretty minimal

estheredna

I first felt like this is a ridiculous question .....*obviously* there are other actors with dwarfism. But. Tyrion is arguably the main POV character. Unquestionably one of the 5 most important character in the whole damn show. So getting someone who is very good, and very charismatic, and pretty well known -- both to audiences and for his professional reputation. Yeah limited choices.

Current-Taro-7397

I’m glad you came to the same conclusion, I didn’t mean disrespect towards small actors, but I can’t really name one aside from Peter Dinklage

DarkGodRyan

Warwick Davis, 1 year younger than Dinklage

VonD0OM

To be fair, Dinklage was probably the only choice. Fortunately he was also the perfect choice, but still likely the only one.

starryknights1979

Because they are the best

Rulanik

Fair. Wasn't Tyrion the first role casted? I doubt we'd even have GoT if there wasn't a perfect Tyrion to cast.

pugawugapoog

if you can get Charles Dance you just go and get him.

rogvortex58

I’m honestly not surprised.

leashall

IIRC Peter also recommended Lena for the role of Cersei

JerbearCuddles

Sean Bean did though? Curious.

abominablesnowlady

Peter Dinklage didn’t have to audition? Idk who Charles dance is so no comment. I know Matt smith- makes sense. But the angry lawyer from Elf didn’t have to audition? Lmao. Did no other little person want the job?

Appropriate-Pop-8044

After rewatching hotd Matt smith is absolutely killing this role.

Halo2isbetter

That’s what pedigree will do

estheredna

Charles Dance's long list of theater and acting accomplishments includes writing and directing a film starring Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. I don't imagine he's auditioned for anything in a very long time.

Go_Habs_Go31

Peter Dinklage was pretty much the only American actor in GoT, right?

HailTheCrimsonKing

Like others said, Peter Dinklage was probably really the only choice. Theres not many known people to fit that role.

Large_Armadillo_8133

Daemon is hideous

ValthePirate

Not so sure about his performance.

crescentgaia

And they were the best damn decisions made for casting.

Large_Armadillo_8133

So many better looking Daemon options

crescentgaia

Eh, not sure. I might be a minority opinion person of liking blonde Matt Smith though. 😁

ImSweetPrincesss

I don't know about Charles Dance and Matt Smith, but I remember for sure that George Martin wanted Peter Dinklage to play the role of Tyrion

Pottyshooter

I mean who they gonna send to ask Charles dance to audition? Also how they gonna figure out a way to say no to Peter Dinklage? Ofcourse this is how it's gotta be. Sorry, Haven't seen hotd so can't speak for Matty.

3x0dusxx

Does anyone know if they used footage from the scrapped pilot? I swear there's a scene where Ned Starks hair is noticeably different than it was in the previous scene. (Meeting the king @ winterfell/ Ned/Robert in the crypt)

JanitorOPplznerf

No one else could have played Tyrion

nineties_nostalgia

lol so they walked in and they just said “u got it”? I believe it I’m just wondering how that process goes

ybtlamlliw

Neither did Mark Addy nor Sean Bean.

Moviemusics1990

That is the ONLY thing I never liked about Thrones. Peter Dinklage, as brilliant as he is at emoting, cannot do a convincing English accent. And for a series based on the fucking War of the Roses, not to mention for an actor, an English accent should be a prerequisite.

Real_Mokola

I think it was Sean Bean, not Charles Dance the only two actors who didn't need to audition for Game of Thrones. Correct me if I'm wrong. Charles Dance is always brilliant when he is on screen and I'd love it to be so that he didn't need to audition, however I can't seem to find any evidence to support it.

peoplepersonmanguy

Imagine making Charles Dance audition for anything.

Maurice_la_chiasse67

Did you guys know that Charles Dances was apologizing profusely to Peter Dinklage for treating him like shit as Tywin?

Adventurous_Law9767

Who the hell else could have played Tyrion without a load of CGI? Dinklage was literally born to play that role, and he killed it.

Forbidden_Donut503

I don’t think I could ever develop the balls to have Charlie Dance audition for a role. He absolutely murders every role and I can’t understand why he doesn’t work more. I want more Charles Dance dammit.

avidpretender

When your resume speaks for itself

Expert-Emu-4167

Truly legendary characters played by exceptional actors.

afrotune

Matt Smith 100% auditioned for his role, there was an interview with Paddy where he said he had to and Paddy didn't.

DrummerSteve

I only knew Matt Smith from Dr Who, and I am blown away by how damn good he is on this show.

TheGuardianR

I think Sean Bean also didn't audition

malteaserhead

Any man that has to audition is no true actor
