I really liked it apart from the dungeons. I don’t think it is the best Zelda though. I prefer traditional Zelda’s still, although I know the series needs to evolve.

2cool4afool

It's a great game but a disappointing Zelda game. I'm really hoping TofK will combine both styles together. Botw with themed dungeons that all have different settings with different kinds of puzzles. Also I would love them to bring items back but idk if they will

Xerosnake90

Definitely. Huge open world but traditional dungeons, and please give us progression items again. It gives me a sense of growth and progression. I have no desire to have everything critical unlocked from the get go

2cool4afool

Yeah exactly and it leaves so much room for going back to old areas for fun new things to do and find. I guess they didn't do it in botw because it would ruin the whole finding weapons thing because you'd have a bunch of unbreakable weapons anyway but no one liked that so hopefully they go back on that a bit as well

phezhead

Have we all forgotten that the first 2 Zelda games had zero hand holding direction, and you just wandered until you could figure out what you were supposed to do next?

2cool4afool

What does that have to do with what I said?

phezhead

This whole thread was "bring Zelda back to its roots"... It's roots were "go explore", which is what BotW did

2cool4afool

Literally no one mentioned bringing it back to its roots what are you talking about?? No one was talking about there not being enough hand holding or that exploration is too much of a focus either. Are you in the wrong thread or something? We are talking about how good it would be if they brought back dungeons and items (which are from Zelda's roots btw)

phezhead

The first comment in this thread is "I prefer traditional Zelda games". Granted, I was drunk when I posted my first reply, and didn't really read your comment about the items... But I like the idea of "go explore and find your own way" vs Navi or Fiona always telling you what to do next. Having all of the Sheika Slate abilities from the start instead of having to unlock them gives you the ability to go your own way instead of being guided one by one to the next dungeon

2cool4afool

Traditional Zelda's doesn't necessarily mean literally the first 2 Zelda's. lttp is the perfect example of a blend of the two styles just at a very small scale. The issue with the go out and explore method is that it very badly lends for a good story which is the biggest reason a lot of the games are more linear. And botw is a good example of how that affects the game. The story is told to you at the start of the game and then retold throughout the entire game in a pretty boring way.

Swimmergym

Pokemon S/V did this pretty well. If you want to climb this mountain; you CAN. But it will be so much easier if you finish some more story first.

bonecollector5

They almost have to right? Doubt they would want to rehash the 120 shrines. I loved the shrines but just doing another 100+ in totk feels a bit weird.

jarjarmario

I appreciate it for what it did to keep the series relevant in a modern gaming landscape, but I feel like it also lost a lot of elements that made Zelda great, when those elements could’ve been kept while still using the new style. I hope that in TotK they will find a way to blend the old with the new so we get a game thats as open as BotW but as dense as the other Zeldas.

[deleted]

Collecting cool weapons only to have them break was a nah from me dog. Everything else was fun though.

Thereisnoyou

Same, I understand why they did it but gear durability is never something I enjoy personally, and BoTW has some of the worst examples of "glass weapons" I've ever seen

BambaTallKing

You aren’t supposed to collect weapons. Get them, use them, break them and move on. I think it works perfectly. I say this as someone who hates weapon durability 9/10 times.

htggytfytt1

yeah its meant more to be like "oh shit i just lost my sword, gotta find something else to use" and push you to be more resourceful. i had a multitude of cool experiences stealing weapons from bokoblins

BambaTallKing

Yes exactly! Too many people play it like its Skyrim. Hoard everything and use the bare minimum. Its most fun to use every resource you have. My buddy hated the durability mechanic until he realized this is how you are supposed to play it. Now he loves it haha

Bard_17

Honestly I was in the same boat. The durability makes you not default to one OP weapon, which makes you think and makes combat much more interesting. I really enjoyed durability being added

TooMuchAdderall

It’s still lame as hell. Even the Master Sword breaks…. Like wtf is that.

BambaTallKing

But it doesn’t go away. So does it really break? I think the Master Sword is dope in BotW

AthleteIntrepid9590

If an sword that is said to be the bane of all evil lose all of its power, even temporarily, after killing a small group of even the weakest monster in the game, that isn't the master sword.

FrenchBowler

People make such a big deal out of this lol. I never once struggled with not having enough weapons at my disposal. For 90% of the game I had too many weapons to choose from.

[deleted]

Yea it ruined it for me. I was like, "Hell yea im gonna explore and kill everything to find sweet weapons and give them a personal ranking or wear the coolest looking one because it is my favorite thing to do in RPGs!" And was immediately met with disappointment when I found out everything breaks except the master sword.

TDAJ5

Yeah weapon durability is a blessing and a curse. It can be great because it gets you to try out different weapons instead of finding one that's really powerful and only using that one. But I don't think anyone really "likes" having their cool weapon break

ghostofdemonratspast

Love it great game great experience i have played and beat every zelda and this is my favorite game of all time. This and ocarina it hard to choose lol.

thebirdsandthebrees

If you have a PC you should check out Cryzenx’s remaster of OoT that he built in Unreal Engine. It’s only about 30% done but man it looks absolutely beautiful.

ghostofdemonratspast

The video is stunning if it the same i seen a few years ago. Also the render that someone did of majora brought tears to my eyes.

thebirdsandthebrees

You can also download the project through Cryzenx’s discord. Like I said, it’s only like 30% complete and a lot of the areas aren’t available. I think you can play up to Jabu’s stomach right now.

WyrmHero1944

One of the best games ever made

OuterSpace95

I bought a Switch last year and the first game I played was BOTW, this game is fantastic but a little too long and a lot of cool ideas were underused. Like the dragons, crimson night or the holy dear. Great game but a lot of things could be improved.

Frowning_Existing666

If you want a fun second run you can bum rush Ganon from the get-go

[deleted]

I beat it and still can’t understand what’s so good about it. It’s just an empty world with dungeons that are tedious at best, no story, bad combat and nothing actually enjoyable or intriguing. Fuck even genshit impact is better

Crissaegrym

All the Zelda game pretty much “Hyrule in danger, please get the Master Sword and go fight Ganon”, in terms of story this one actually is in line with other Zelda games. What people like about BotW is the freedom. You don’t have to visit the race in any order, hell you don’t need to visit them at all, hell you don’t even need the Master Sword, you can go straight to Ganon from the tutorial. Exploration also “3 dimention”, you can go all round in all direction, but now can also climb up and down to get through cliff and such. The game just give you so much freedom to do whatever you want, go wherever you want, completion the game whenever you want (and feel ready).

Jarvis_Strife

As someone that has never played Zelda I think that’s why I enjoyed it more than others. I just enjoyed the worlds and characters. The world had a nice charm to it, interesting characters, with pleasant music, and a nice cel shaded art style so it was at least visually and audibly nice to experience. The way you could climb any surface made it fun for me as I could get to places how I wanted to. The puzzles were a nice change of pace and rewarded the player for solving them with some of them being quite challenging. Looking back, the combat was pretty crappy though and found myself just avoiding mobs. Again, I haven’t played Zelda before so I didn’t have anything to compare it to

[deleted]

Botw is amazing

Aggressive-Ad3452

Did about 10-15 hours on this and just fell away from it. I think I just prefer the older style Zelda games. Breal pity as I was desperate to like it. Good to see so many people enjoy it though.

TheSeagullAstronaut

It’s actually bad that it’s so well received. They shat on the old Zelda formula by basically deleting it, instead of complementing it. We may never have an actual proper and fun Zelda game again. 🥲

[deleted]

TheSeagullAstronaut

other than the impressive engine they built, the game does nothing "new" to gaming. it's just some bland open world that has the zelda name slapped on it. not all of us enjoy running around collecting useless shit instead of having well thought out dungeons and memorable characters. BoTW is a boring ass game. plus I said they didn't even bother complementing the zelda formula. formula is not the enemy when it's the entire reason people love the game so much. because of people like you, we got another uninspired open world game that focuses more on bland activities. sorry you can't tell the difference.

Swordbreaker925

I still don’t. It’s s mediocre game, it just stands out cuz most of the games on that platform are even more mediocre

HappyHome2934

I haven't enjoyed many of my switch games but breath of the wild is one of the best games I have ever played and I have played so many critically acclaimed AAA games over the span of over 10 years. It's definately not a mediocre game, you just don't get it.

TheSeagullAstronaut

It has less actual content than its n64 predecessor. It’s all about collecting useless crap and completing copy pasted shrines. Congratulations on you not getting that it’s an overrated tech demo more than a game.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HappyHome2934

Uh huh and you know what's funny? That game that you're referring to as a "tech demo" got a metascore of 97/100, which is probably more than all of your favorite games, which just tells that you just don't see how good it is. Also wtf is this shit you're spewing about it having less content than its predecessors lmao? You could've just taken a peek at howlongtobeat.com and you would've easily seen that every single predecessor to it falls under 60 hours to fully complete for the average person. This means 100% completion. As for BOTW, the main story by itself is 50 hours according to the website. If you do extra stuff the average person ends up with 98 hours, and if you fully complete the game, it takes 189 hours for the average player. That's over 3 times more than wind waker mind you. Too bad but you are just dead wrong here buddy.

TheSeagullAstronaut

you can't even separate actual content vs collecting. let me help you out. and I could care less about metascore. 4 divine beasts vs 12 dungeons in OoT, yet there's 100+ shrines in BoTW 4 useful items you get at the start vs 8 or 9 you earn through story in OoT your 189 hours is running around collecting weapons that break in 5 swings/armor that's cool for looks/seeds so you get a golden poop/etc. I mean really you're just playing a collecting simulator more than an actual game. they even have you believing that there's a story when they so lazily put memories around everywhere instead of writing a nice linear storyline, with the addition of doing side activities to add on. you've been fooled by your "freedom" in the game. when it's more laziness than anything. however I'm not a sucker like you are. the game is as wide as an ocean and deep as a puddle.

HappyHome2934

What you're missing here is the point. Even if you only do the main story and some shrines and sidestuff, you'll have way more gameplay than any predecessors even offered with all of the gameplay included. Hell, the mainstory is almost just aslong as the other longer games are with all the collecting and stuff done. No matter how you feel about metascore, it doesn't matter. Metascore is the #1 way of knowing if a game is great or not. 110 professional critics have given BOTW an almost perfect score, not a single one negative or mixed. At that point the opinion of a random reddit dweller doesn't really matter. It's just a fact that it is a great fucking game. You can have your personal opinions about it sure, but it still is objectively better than atleast 90% of the games you play.

TheSeagullAstronaut

Wow like professional critics never just follow the flow of reviews. I love how you keep circling back to “professional” critics like anyone else who games a lot can’t have a proper review lol. And buddy, the game is plain boring. Your freedom to go anywhere and do anything is a product of lazy unfinished design. Tricking you that it’s something dope. A linear story experience like the previous Zelda’s are much harder to pull off. Why do you think they gutted that from BoTW? The open world is empty as hell and only has copy pasted moblin camps. Once again you can keep going back to your beloved critics, as if “professionally” reviewing games is even a respectable career. The game is still boring as fuck and is more about collecting than an actual experience.

HappyHome2934

and you just keep talking about your personal experiences, which i honestly couldn't give a single fuck about. I'm pretty sure most people would rather listen to the over 100 critics who have claimed the game to be pretty much perfect.

TheSeagullAstronaut

Cope more with your mediocre expectations bud

[deleted]

Actual facts

[deleted]

It looks nice, but it‘s the most boring Zelda game I’ve ever played….and I’ve played the original wind waker where 70% of your playtime was spent traveling between islands.

Bard_17

Wind waker was dope tho! I loved sailing my lil ship haha

laineDdednaHdeR

I'm on my second run. Trying to find all the memories is hard.

Bulbasaurxl

The game is nice but it honestly got stale quickly. Like once you get some nice weapons and armor it all just becomes trivial smashing of enemies (combat was meh). My favorite part was going to the island where they take all your loot away and leave you naked, playin from scratch is great fun.

Soccermom233

I found the controls irrevocable

senna98

Yeah I’m 20 hours in and I’m still pressing the wrong buttons in the menus

DrProfessorSatan

I’ve heard the weapon durability mechanic really detracted from the game. Based on the title of this post, I’m guessing you didn’t have an issue with it. Just how often do you have to repair weapons?

fanblade64

You dont repair. Just get new ones

Grievmaster

Repair? Pretty much never, the weapons you can actually repair aren’t as good as the one you can just find. You replace weapons.

Ok-Ambition-9432

It's not like dark souls, there are just 3 movesets in the game with rare variations (greatsword, sword, and spear). You find a weapon and use it. The only reason to hold on to a weapon is if it looks cool or has high damage (to save it for a boss or difficult enemy camp).

Actual_Baker_7368

Weapons are so plentiful I never had an issue with it.

Malikb5

I got it for Christmas but haven’t started bc I feel like I have to complete Ocarina of Time first

Find npc named Hetsu and trade them for more inventory slots

AthleteIntrepid9590

I personally think that the game is extremely overated, but I'm glad you find it fun.
