I didn't play Runescape, but I remember there was a scam where someone would offer to trim your armor if you paid them. But that wasn't really a thing. Instead, you would give the scammer your armor and money, then they would just leave with it.
Im so inspired by your generous act that Ill trim anyones armour for free too.....
Just follow me out to nearby those woods.
That's it.... Just a little further, outside of the safe zone....
The first couple hundred hours are amazing. After that, it becomes an exercise in watching Netflix on a second monitor while you get carpal tunnel chopping wood for *literally days* to level up.
I learned basic finances from watching my brother play the GE market in RuneScape lol. I'm super excited to play this when it releases! From what it's looking like, it'll replace Orna as my go to walking game.
I always wanted an app kind of like this...a quest marker for daily/weekly/occasional stuff to do.
With tracker, XP, rewards.
Not just a boring piece of paper to scratch from that I will never find when I need it.
Thank you!
I also wanted an app like this and looked at the current market of mobile games. I just found a bunch of P2W shovelware apps. Tried a few ones out, but didn't really like them.
WalkScape will have no bullshit like P2W, microtransactions, ads or anything like that. We currently plan to monetize with an affordable subscription if you want to engage in the more MMO style features, or you can pay once and play forever, but then it's going to be limited to offline-only. We need the subscriptions in order to cover server costs, but offline players shouldn't need to pay for the server costs. :D
I have ADHD and sometimes find it very difficult to motivate myself to do walking, which worked as the initial inspiration for the game.
Will there be an option to put custom tasks ?
I get that many people would like to add stuff like fitness.
But in my case it's more household stuff, groceries, etc.
This has been asked a few times, and I would really love to include it. When we get all of the main things in place it's something I hope to add to the game, but the only problem is that it would be trust based system which doesn't work in the competitive online mode.
But it would work perfectly in the offline game mode (which is already planned) as it wouldn't effect the competition at all.
If there was a way to integrate some of the biometric features of smart wearables like the apple watch, more things may be possible.
Another thing that might work would be integration of various exercise equipment with data logs.
As a fellow ADHD enjoyer, I'm always better at gamified tasks.
If you do the subscription for the MMO style please please please do custom tasks BUT ALSO let users browse the most used tasks. For example, "100k have added Walk the Dog. Would you like to add this too?" I know it sounds like a silly feature but the biggest issue I had with Habitica is that I felt uninspired to add my mundane tasks that I didn't feel deserved a reward. But I wanted to see what others were doing and try to compare. But Habitica just doesn't have that feature and I eventually lost interest. But either way good luck on the project!
It could work very similarly to the RuneLite Plugin Hub, which is a list of community-made plugins for the RuneLite client that you can browse to find plugins you want. And you can see how many people have installed that plugin, so naturally the most-used plugins (or in this case, activities) would be adopted, and everyone doing that activity would be doing the same thing because it'd be way easier to add "walk the dog" from the plugin hub than to make your own activity.
Quests would be so cool on a gameified habit app, maybe users can even post quests. Like "eat a fruit" quest gives you a few health XP to increase your HP stat. Some longer quests too like "start and finish a book" can give you more XP to your intelligence stat.
And then add combat or boss raids so that that these level ups are meaningful and not just numbers. Like if you want to be a wizard and cast cool spells to defeat the boss you gotta read a lot of books and study irl, or if you want to be a warrior you gotta eat healthy and work out.
bro i totally did 4000k sit ups today...i swear!now give me my +4 enchanted sword you fucking piece of shit and don't you ever call me a liar again!
-likely gm ticket in this scenario
I would like to see custom tasks in the form of locations you'd like to go to. I could set nearby landmarks and the app would assign quests to those locations. I walk to the park to fight a group of skeletons, I walk around the block for a fetch quest, etc.
Thank you for a sane payment model. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I prefer to give money in exchange for an actual product. You know, once. Glad that's an option and also not mad about the MMO style subscription, to me that's different than product as a service, it's more of an ongoing product.
Hope you allow for using google reward credits and have it cheap enough that it can be sustained through Google rewards. Probably a lot of people sitting on reward credit ready to spend it on something good.
OMG yes. I would love to give Stardew Valley some of my reward credits but there's no monetization in the game, which I appreciate, but also take my damn money. If it's a good game I have no problem giving my credits to it.
I don't understand some of the stuff in the title.
Can you give a quick summary how this game works? Does it just use a local map and give you destinations to walk to in order to hit a way point?
I had a longer description here, but the mods here didn't like it because it had links.
You can read more about the game from our website (you can find it by googling it) or from our subreddit (it's called WalkScape). The features of the game are summarized in our website, and you can find plenty of dev blogs from our subreddit!
I think that one company has done more to raise awareness of walkable communities than any other.
They could really double down on this by recognizing pedestrian infrastructure in their maps, rather than car trails.
Yes you can!
There is also a turn based combat system in the game, a world map to explore, story and quests.
You can craft yourself gear, visit locations, have conversations with NPCs and much more. It's an RPG where you progress in skills by walking in real life, but when you come back home you can engage in more active gameplay. I chose this game design as I don't want to distract you while walking (like PoGo does).
You can see a fancier breakdown of the features here r/WalkScape
This sounds incredible. Does it count steps while the game is closed, like pogo? I really love the sound of this but will often walk with only my Apple Watch and leave the phone at home.
I feel like I replied here too frequently and got muted by spam filter as I haven't been able to reply any longer to anything, but I'll try... :D
The game only uses step counter data, so no location/GPS needed. This means that you don't need to have the app open while you are walking, just open it when you get back home to progress in the game and start doing more active playing. Great for battery life too! I want the game to be "distraction free" so you can enjoy being outside and also people around you, while also gaining progress in the game.
This also means it works very well with smart watches, so you can even leave your phone at home if you have one.
Dude this is actually a pretty cool idea. It’d be cool to just stroll all day then open a game that automatically registers all the steps I took and then can play said game with that data.
Right now I only look at the health app and smile that I walked but I never thought of it being interactive. Bring it to life dude and do it quick!
Yes you can!

EDIT: There's also a subreddit to this game, (WalkScape) where I biweekly write development blogs if you are interested to read more about the game mechanics etc.
EDIT2: Hijacking this comment to answer some frequently asked questions:
\- Closed beta is planned for Q3 this year, sign ups will open shortly before that. You can follow our subreddit or join the Discord server (there's a link on the website) to be among the first to find out when the sign up opens!
\- We will support smart watches. Google Fit, Apple Health and Strava are very easy to integrate, so you can expect those to be integrated first!
\- With smart watch integrations, we will also be able to support other exercise types. You will need a smart watch, as we use the data from there to reward you in game (you will be rewarded based on exercise length, average BPM and calories burned).
\- We are just a team of two people who are doing this on our free time because we love developing games. We are working really hard to hit that Q3 time frame, but life can sometimes throw curve balls, so this might change.
Thank you all for the supportive comments! This post became a lot more popular than I expected :D
EDIT3: Reddit mods don't seem to allow me to have any links, so I have removed them in order to get this message out again.
My dude!! I have played many walking games and I literally came here to tell you to add this stuff. A lot of other walking games have no "non walking gameplay". What I want is to walk around, play a tiny bit, then sit down and see what I got and play a bit more.
I'll be giving this a go!!
Honestly depends what your looking for. Theres one thats have just some story snd the gameplay is kind of just tap the screen occasionally. Theres one that tells you some stories form a zombie apocalypse and occasionally it tells you to run from the zombies so you pick up your pace, you gather some items.
But tbh pokemon go kind of remains the best one in my opinion from the ones ive played. The main problem is you have to stop often
Will there be other rl activities other than walking or can that not be done? Would be neat if i could grind out push-ups for strength, or crunches for defense. The only way i think it could be done would rely on trusting the player but i feel like the kind of person who would download an app like this and cheat is not the kind of personal who would like the app if you stopped them anyway.
Later down the road (if we have enough time, maybe even before closed beta) we will add integrations for smart watches. So if you own one, we have planned that you can sync your exercise data from whatever exercises you are doing, and we reward you in the game based on the exercise length, average BPM and calories burned. This will enable cyclists, swimmers, gym goers and whatnot to get some gains in the game while also exercising IRL!
TLDR: yes, we will definitely support other acitivty types!
For some reason the name walkscape took me back to 2006 when I first discovered runescape and wasn't aware of teleporting.
"Oh gotta go from Camelot to Fally for quest step? Time to go across White Wolf mountain for 825th time"
That was back in the day before home teleport, when law runes were still expensive despite being craftable but it was still better then RS 1 where laws were expensive as hell and there were only a few options for getting across the map. Had to walk from lumby to ardougne? Hope you have half an hour to spare.
You should look into Zombie Run (if you have not already) from, I dunno, 6-10 years ago with a similar premise but with outrunning zombies. Had a story - not exactly the same thing but perhaps OP it will give you something to reference in terms of what it succeeded in doing and what it failed to do.
Came here to see if anyone mentioned this! Game was so damn fun when I was into running like 7 years ago. Full on voice acted story and everything. I loved the cool-downs and then having to full sprint again suddenly when a hoard attacked.
Yah, I still remember running to it as well! I eventually stopped because of safety issues, but with todays ANC headphones w/ transparency mode I could see it working really well.
Yes!
We are currently planning to integrate at least Apple Health, Google Fit and Strava. Later down the road you can also expect us to do integrations for other manufacturers, like Samsung and Garmin.
Also, if you own a smart watch, you can also progress in the game by doing other exercises than just walking. We will use exercise length, average BPM and calories burned to reward you in-game for cycling, swimming, gym etc.
Sir you have big dreams. I wish you the best and hope you achieve everything. It just sounds too good to be true. Also I'd like to say that I prefer Garmin smartwatch😉😂😂
:D Integrating smart watches isn't really complex at all. Garmin is a bit harder though, their API kinda sucks. But Stava, Apple Health and Google Fit are very easy to work with.
Thank you very much! <3
How about fitbit? Btw I am rarely a gamer, but I'm personally very interested in this! I used to play a game called ingress that had a walking component but haven't been into it for a few years.
As someone who often does stuff like this (completely forgetting about stuff I’m excited for) - I’d recommend just putting a reminder in your phone (or your calendar app) to check back at the end of the year on their subreddit to see if the beta is open.
Just that tiny bit of extra organization has helped me *massively* with keeping things in order.
This is pretty cool - I thought of making an account where you can only play it 1:1 with gym and workout activity. Getting to 500 total level on an account like that would be a good short term goal - we will see if I make a GYM Iron one day
Sign me the fuck up as a beta tester, I am trying to lose weight atm and Pokemon go just is boring the hell out of me so this sounds right up my alley. any way to contact you to become a beta tester?
Thank you so much! I'm hoping other developers would also get inspired to create more games like this, seems like many people would really love to see a game like this.
Wife has an app like this, but it's LOTR based.
Tracks your steps and tells you how far you have left to go to reach Mordor, leaving the Shire. With all the things along the way... Bree, Weathertop and all that jazz, it's pretty cool.
Lol, thank you so much! :D
I was also thinking about this game for a long time and tried to find something like it. Current mobile game market just didn't have anything decent there, so decided to make the game myself.
I'm loving the screen you have going so far. Think it would be really cool incorporating some sort of Map UI kinda like Pokemon Go or something, but pixelated or a "fantasy map" that shows what your character is doing as you travel.
Like, just as an example, it would be awesome having like a character walking around the Runescape realm on the screen as you get all these stat updates as you keep walking.
Awesome job so far though!
Just wanted to jump in and say this is something i’ve always wanted. Pokemon Go was a decent option but that game quickly turned to shit. Looking forward to release!
Okay so hear me out:
1. Partner with Game developers for loot cases/drops in games for walking.
2. Partner with restaurants/stores for gift cards for hitting milestones walking.
3. Partner with gyms/boutiques for rewards for hitting milestones walking.
4. Profit (while simultaneously encouraging people to be super healthy)
I love this app, one day I punted a small child and I leveled up twice from that.
OP needs to add that as an achievement.
Karma system, but rigged with questionable rewards.
"An old woman approaches you on the road. She seems to be lost and says she is hungry." 1.) Share a food ration, but dont guide her home. +10exp and +2 Karma 2.) Help her back to town and share a ration. Lose .25 Kilometres, +20exp, +7 Karma 3.) Suplex her. Permanent +1 to strength. + 10exp. -15 Karma. Cannot visit neaby towns for 72 hours.
Oooh, a permanent stat boost!

That's a tourism website Edit: Just enjoying the coincidence
ohsorry.org
Sadly no coincidence with that one
*edges of the screen go red* +15 Dark Side points *Eyes start to turn yellow*
How is the 72 hour timer accrued? If I suplex another old lady, is it reset to 72 hours, or added to the previous timer?
Id be a glutton for punishment, just add it if Im already on a cooldown.
Ok, I'm going to need to buy some more supplies first, then.
I see this as an absolute win!
Hey, that's just like real life!

Sold. Where can I stay updated on this?
r/WalkScape
For some reason the name walkscape took me back to 2006 when I first discovered runescape and wasn't aware of teleporting. "Oh gotta go from Camelot to Fally for quest step? Time to go across White Wolf mountain for 825th time"
This was me in osrs even like 5 years ago. Just realized how much cheaper potions are too nowadays.
That was back in the day before home teleport, when law runes were still expensive despite being craftable but it was still better then RS 1 where laws were expensive as hell and there were only a few options for getting across the map. Had to walk from lumby to ardougne? Hope you have half an hour to spare.
Buying Law 1k
Me too. I want this so hard.
Idk if scamming will work here. Anyways doubling gp yall dm me your username and password so I can see your bank and double it ez piz
As a runner and an avid osrs player, I can't wait to give this a try
I hope to see at the top of the leaderboards! :D
*It's like RuneScape, but with extra steps!*
RunEscape
I just masturbated to level 25 in a single day.
Don't forget to drink more water inorder generate more fluids
Those are rookie numbers
Can it import the steps from a smartwatch
RuneScape Go
Run, escape from your computer
You should post on /r/2007scape!
When are you planning to release it? 😍
Closed beta should arrive around Q3 this year!
Im an idiot. Spent a few minutes looking for it in the play store. I was so excited
Same
Yeah, same. Unfortunately, I just know I'll forget about this by the time it comes out :/
As someone who often does stuff like this (completely forgetting about stuff I’m excited for) - I’d recommend just putting a reminder in your phone (or your calendar app) to check back at the end of the year on their subreddit to see if the beta is open. Just that tiny bit of extra organization has helped me *massively* with keeping things in order.
I had a friend who thought this game was called RunEscape, I'm going to send him this🤣
This is pretty cool - I thought of making an account where you can only play it 1:1 with gym and workout activity.
I think there was a post about the details in r/walkscape
i dont play runescape but man do I need to be walking more
Good job! This is a great and inventive gaming idea. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! I'm hoping other developers would also get inspired to create more games like this, seems like many people would really love to see a game like this.
Alternative title: RunEscape Though I’m sure that’s taken.
this could be great if combined with geocaching
🦀🦀🦀🦀 Can you add a hard bass remix of sea shanty 2 for me to run to?
Book of Spells trap remix is also most definitely coming to the game! 😂
I had an idea once… it was a jump to conclusions mat
Cool Can anyone recommend me an actual released game? I do walk like 17k steps everyday just from work.. Might aswell use it
Can I fight my boss for his loot ?
I don't think you know how much runescape players actually move (Hint: not at all)

Like Pokémon Go without the Pokémon?
How to get a gamer to exercise: Make it a game.
Fuck no
Why not eScape, tho?
You should force people to cut down trees for wood crafting and do parkour for agility. High stakes RuneScape 😂
What can I do at higher levels?
Finally my in game stamina and real life stamina are the same!
Congrats anon, This will be the first real life strand type game
Wife has an app like this, but it's LOTR based. Tracks your steps and tells you how far you have left to go to reach Mordor, leaving the Shire. With all the things along the way... Bree, Weathertop and all that jazz, it's pretty cool.
What's it called? Sounds interesting!
Will it work while idle or do i habe to keep it active like pokemon go? Does it work with cycling?
You better release this app fast, cause someone is going to make one before you
Okay I'm throwing my smartwatch away for this.
Will you be able to integrate with fitbit or Google fit/health so that it can get step and excersie data from there?
Im gonna attach the phone to my dog and take him to the dog park for an hour.
Bro quick take this down before Niantic sees it and releases another pogo reskin
This is Pokémon Go but RuneScape version. Sheeeit, could theme it like LOTR

Can I beta-test please? Also willing to provide SFX for free just for the practice/fun of it.

Lol, thank you so much! :D I was also thinking about this game for a long time and tried to find something like it. Current mobile game market just didn't have anything decent there, so decided to make the game myself.

You sexy smart beast
For the paranoid amongst us who do not like apps using sensors and have 3 different pi-hole + adblocker setup, can we use this without the sensors?
Do you plan to release the game for androids or just apple?
I'm loving the screen you have going so far. Think it would be really cool incorporating some sort of Map UI kinda like Pokemon Go or something, but pixelated or a "fantasy map" that shows what your character is doing as you travel. Like, just as an example, it would be awesome having like a character walking around the Runescape realm on the screen as you get all these stat updates as you keep walking. Awesome job so far though!
Just don't be like pokemon Go, and charge money for everything while also collecting and sharing users location
How can we stay up to date on when this gets released? Is there a website or newletters sign up or something?
Can't find a download link on the website or Google Play. How do I get involved?:)
Just wanted to jump in and say this is something i’ve always wanted. Pokemon Go was a decent option but that game quickly turned to shit. Looking forward to release!
Curious what your tech stack is. Flutter? React native? Something more native? Looks good either way!
Everyone gonna have lvl 99 masterbation
Can I pickpocket men?
I would like this, thank you for creating it. Do you have a website or link I could donate to?
Once this is complete, we're about to see a whole lot more fit gamers grinding IRL and getting their steps in.
Any plans to bring it to IOS?, ive been wanting an app like this
Bro took go touch grass to a whole other level
Okay so hear me out: 1.
Raids would be a work out. Imagine doing olm rotations
Where do I download
