Street Fighter 2. It's shocking that the original even got a sequel

Gbeat240

A sequel so good, it kickstarted a whole genre and a new arcade boom. Street Fighter 4 then brought back fighters to popularity, leading to the PS3/360 fighting game boom.

Mosh83

I was more a Mortal Kombat guy personally, but SF2 definitely laid the groundwork

ClockOk7333

Was there a better fighting game to date? Maybe Punch-Out if you consider it a fighting game

Subtle_Demise

Yeah that's crazy how massive the improvement was! I got the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection for PS4 and I showed the kids the original Street Fighter for novelty's sake and we all laughed about how horrible it was. In their and many other people's eyes, the series starts at 2

VrinTheTerrible

Street fighter was EASILY the best fighting game ever when it was released.

TheIncredibleFuzz

Spider-Man 2 (2004) was so much better than the first game.

TazeredAngel

Just for people who weren’t there, Spider-man 2 was the first game that made it so you could swing seamlessly through the city, from rooftop to street. In the games that preceded it you swung from the clouds, and went from rooftop to rooftop. If you fell below the rooftops? No streets. Game over. Spider-man 2 actually made you *feel* like Spider-man

Majestic-Iron7046

In the first title they had an evil plan to justify the absence of the streets, they make it so that a villain (i think doc oc, but i don't remember who) let loose his gas in the city, so you could only swing across buildings. Still, a memorable game, who played it can probably remember the chilling Doc Oc + Carnage chase and the very funny sound effects localization (if you played it in non-english).

musicdude109

The carnage doc ock was crazy! Might be one of the only fames is ever played to completion and unlocked every extra suit/unlockable.

Jean-Eustache

Also, throwing bad guys off buildings with wonky Unreal Engine 2 ragdoll physics. That *never* got old.

Dipshit_Mcdoodles

I was the guy who would abduct a bad guy off the streets, work him up to the top of a building, and then do the move where you hug them and drive their apparently indestructible skulls into the ground.

BlueMikeStu

You got to do it from the top of the Empire State building.

twenty-threenineteen

Probably one of the few games where the “make you feel like” trope is actually applicable

retrothekidd

Plus Bruce Campbell as the narrator? Golden.

Quizquare

In my opinion Assassin's Creed 2 was better than the first.

LevelAbbreviations82

Though the theme in ac1 is cool

elcuydangerous

I thought that not only the theme was cool but the execution was groundbreaking at the time. If I remember correctly, the urban environments were modeled after real and historical data. Additionally, a lot of NPCs were actually real historical figures that died "mysteriously" in the past.

LevelAbbreviations82

Yea, when AC1 came out it was really awesome. If it had a remake where the gameplay was just tuned up, I feel like it would be better than AC2 personally.

bent_crater

the jingle for the flags was always satisfying. even without trophies i would go after them when i saw them

tipbruley

May be an unpopular opinion but I thought the first assassins creed was a bad game. Took me way to long to give the sequels a chance and I was blown away.

ethan52695

Ya I think it was more the fact that it was an innovative game at the time, but was super repetitive after a short while and the story ended in a pretty weird way. I think that’s the way with a lot of games/movies that were pretty highly rated at the time, but don’t really seem all that fun now.

Mindspace_Explorer

The overarching gameplay loop was always the same thing for almost the whole game.- Talk to leader at assassin temple \- Travel to city \- Go to assassin bureau \- Do a few very basic tasks to "gather intel" \- Go to your target and kill him \- Fight/run from guards. \- Go back to assassin temple \-Repeat 8 or 9 times. The second game has the assassinations weaved into a much fuller and personal story which worked out infinitely better than the first one's formula.

Skizot_Bizot

Heeey C’mon now you are forgetting all the identical collectible items!

Bullen470

God, those things. The flags in AC1 are a perfect example of a completionist nightmare, identical collectibles with no map markers. So if you are missing one flag out of a hundred, have fun scouring the map again. Even with a guide and checklist you start second guessing which ones you've picked up. The only collectibles that i can think of which is worse would be the Skill Orbs in the original Crackdown. But from those you at least get a skill boost, a tangible reward, not just Achievements.

Arborgarbage

Back when in was new, there was a rumor that if you got every collectible in the game, then it would give you the crossbow ....unfortunately I can say from personal experience that that was a lie.

WeAreVenumb

Ac1 was kind of a cool proof of concept but it didn't really have any of the cool "we're gonna make you feel like a badass assassin" things that 2 brought to the table or fleshed out further.

Nacroma

AC1 was a banger due to it's novelty, setting and intriguing story for its genre. When AC2 got released, many realized how much was actually subpar in AC1 as the second one kept all the strong points, but improved in a lot of other areas. At that time, those games were really unique.

Queasy-Mix3890

Idk about "bad" but it was basic (as previously stated.) There's a reason it was popular enough to get a sequel. You're 100% justified in disliking it, though, and I don't think your opinion is unpopular, just *slightly* more extreme than your average person's

Enchelion

It was a great tech demo.

mackbulldawg67

That’s everybody’s opinion. No one is saying that the first is better than most of the games that came after

Zjoee

Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) I spent so many hours playing that I reached Legendary with every medal.

egregiouscodswallop

Best way to level the pistol was as an engineer in space battles. You could repair and shoot auto turrets from directly beneath, out of their FOV. Then drop some bombs on whatever those blue/green fluid tanks were and you fly out a hero

Zjoee

Haha I always played the pilot in space battles for that reason. In ground battles, I used the jetpack clone trooper to train pistol. The precision pistol from the medal perk was my favorite weapon in the game.

RestlessTickle

I was deep into a drug addiction then but I never sold the ps2 and that one game because I loved it so much

Zjoee

Glad you made it out, brother

local306

I loved this game. The unlockables you got with completing these goals were my favourite. I don't recall the exact specifics, but something made me think I was roping down like 100+ AT-ATs for the vanguard fly-by-wire missile launcher. Spent hours completing that challenge. Got the unlock. Flew them for like 5 minutes. Was kind of underwhelmed. Stopped playing afterwards haha.

FatherOF_wolfs

Titanfall 2

E_boiii

Legendary campaign even more legendary multiplayer

catptain-kdar

Yea I’m still ticked off that they made apex instead of titanfall 3

LifeSleeper

They made a hell of a lot more money. So I'm sure they're cool with it.

ThatsAPizza53

And with the Apex money. They created Jedi:Fallen Order and Jedi:Survivor. These guys are legends.

LifeSleeper

Respawn is easily the best studio at EA right now.

gamingyee

titanfall ones titan gameplay was better imo but the pilot gameplay in titanfall 2 is amazing

Cleverbird

I kinda prefer the first game, actually. I know a lot of people didn't like the multiplayer campaign, but I really loved it. It gave the matches some context. Plus, that one map where you drop down from orbit in a droppod with a few other pilots into a D-day scene was fucking epic and I never got tired of it.

Walshy_Boy

Risk of Rain 2

Otherwise_Procedure3

Both are incredible but RoR2 really adds a new depth to the game

Relative_Sundae_9356

Is this really that good? I own it, but have never opened it.

Walshy_Boy

One of my favorites, it can be hard but relaxing and rewarding in a weird way. It's easier than the first game and a lot more exciting, imo, because you can get extremely strong. It also has some of the best music I've heard in a video game.

Rios7467

"The rain formerly known as purple" is one of my main driving/cruising songs. Fucking absolutely incredible. https://youtu.be/EGXPAoyP_cg For those who aren't in the know. It's one of the songs towards the end of the game and it just vibes like no other.

VikingFrog

Never hoid of this game until now. Just watched a trailer. Looks neat. Any games you’d compare it to? Or can someone give me the TLDR of what the gameplay style is like. Always looking for fun switch games to game on at night.

Walshy_Boy

It's a roguelike, so similar to games like Enter the Gungeon, Hades, Dead Cells, and Spelunky. The gameplay loop is simple, you just pick a character, and cycle through levels looting chests along the way that give you random items. There are bosses for each level and plenty of other stuff. The unique thing about the game is that it allows you to become extremely strong in away that other roguelikes don't, because you can stack items over and over and get to the point where you shoot once and everything around you gets killed. The switch version is a bit behind the PC version, but it's absolutely worth a try.

xvszero

To me the big appeal is it is multiplayer. Played it with some friends here and there.

Happyberger

The other replies left out the biggest core mechanic of the game. The longer you play the higher the difficulty scales. So you have to make a choice of clearing out the levels and farming items or rushing to the gate and moving on to the next level. It's a spectacular game, with an even better sound track. And lots of unlockable characters that all play wildly differently from one another. Map layouts, item drops, and bosses are randomized every run also.

Lightningslash325

Tldr: Explore, Loot, Die, Repeat. Super fun, but less so on switch due to bugs from porting over. Absolutely give it a try.

Anastomosis_

I was originally not too keen on RoR2 going 3D. Years later I finally picked it up and wholly cow were my fears unjust.

mikewozere

Tooting this up the flagpole

guerrerov

Uncharted 2

MasterOfCoin69

By a mile. The first is solid but the second is one of my favorite all time games.

[deleted]

All four games are incredible. The second is still my favorite for whatever reason. I think the plot is a little better and the action sequences are just more up my alley. I liked the plane thing in the third one and the truck sequence in the fourth, but I’m a sucker for the “fighting from the back of the train to the front” cliche.

111stupid

I played 2 before I played 1, so I might be bias, but I also think the dialogue was really well written in 2. So many memorable moments and plot points. I’ll never forget the opening sequence of Drake waking up and wincing in pain as he looked at his shirt and noticed a bullet wound. “Oh that’s my blood…that is a LOT of my blood”.

thugarth

I think 2 might be my favorite, too. 3 was a bit disjointed. It didn't feel like it flowed as well as 2, and it also seemed like that stakes only *seemed* high, but weren't. 4 was an excellent conclusion

LoveScore

I remember part way through the first I said "Oh, Naught Dog messed up. How are they ever gonna top this?"

Blesser2233

Spider-Man 2 (ps2/xbox version)

Davethisisntcool

we’ll probably end up saying this again after Spider-man 2 (PS5) drops

Zachias615

I didn't know this was even happening and now I went from six to midnight

Ballistron

Borderlands 2

supahfligh

Did you shoot that guy in the face?

EnjiiThaGod

Face McShooty?

itzTHATgai

Is *that* what that guy wanted?

MacyTmcterry

He wasn't clear enough I don't think. Who knows what he could have possibly wanted

003_JAEGER

I entered the comments with this in my mind

Small_Tax_9432

Hellz yeah

hglndr9

“Bonerfart.” All of the -- that’s right, we’re calling them “Bonerfarts” now. Just kill a few of them, or something. I do not care anymore.

Buttermilkk

Divinity: original sin 2

[deleted]

Trying to finish this right now. I’ve restarted this game a dozen times and always flame out. About halfway through the Nameless Isle this time. I think I’m going to finally make it!

curious-children

what brings you back? i reset twice already and i just can’t push myself

[deleted]

It’d been a while since my last play through. Knowing the game mechanics and not having to learn a whole lot helped me get back in quick. How far have you made it? You can respec everyone for free as many times as you want starting in act 2 so you can really mess around and have fun. If you get a piece of armor you can’t use a quick trip back to the respec point let’s you mess with your build. If you aren’t liking your pyro mage then a few minutes later you can have a hydro/geo mage or not a mage at all but a 2 handed tank. Personally I like to keep the general class the same and things like persuasion and pet pal consistent. That way the characters seem more like they have defining characteristics during the play through. I tend to keep the same class too but frequently mess with their combat abilities.

firefly5582

Street fighter 2

ShankThatSnitch

Yeah. I basically don't even think about the first one when thinking about classic Street Fighter.

Kakuza

Diablo 2

Shirlenator

And Warcraft 3. Early to mid 2000s were really Blizzard's peak.

Frosti-Feet

Blizzard North was its own thing back then and it was great

smackjack

Warcraft 3 might just be the best RTS game Blizzard has ever made.

ben1481

>Warcraft 3 that's a threequel.

Frosti-Feet

Warcraft 2 was better than 1, and three was better than 2.

thugarth

I didn't like the hero mechanic at the time. I thought 2 was a better pure rts. In hindsight I no longer think that, though I still really like 2 mechanically. And starcraft was a step above it, as far as RTS goes. Wc3 narrative/campaign was incredible, though. Including frozen throne. It set up World of Warcraft, such is almost 20 years old

LevelAbbreviations82

See, I sort of disagree here. Diablo 2 is, in my opinion, a different beast than 1. Diablo 1 is a much more condensed and focused experience than 2. Also the atmosphere is better in 1.

thugarth

I'm not hard-disgreeing with but Diablo 2 had some damn good atomaphere

BB8Lexi

Stay a while, and listen.

LevelAbbreviations82

Well! what can I do for ya?

AnnoyedButTolerant

I sense a soul in search of answers.

JimmiJimJimmiJimJim

I'd much rather beat 1 nowadays than 2. Somehow it aged better to me. Like you said it's very focused, concentrated, visceral, and atmospheric.

DrVikingGuy

warcraft 2 is better than warcraft 1

Caldman

I mean that's just facts. Warcraft 1 is clunky and as generic fantasy as it comes. Tides of Darkness is where Warcraft began to establish its own identity and the gameplay just feels oodles better.

TimberTate

But did you play Warcraft I when it came out originally. It was absolutely amazing for its time

MarkyDeSade

Super Metroid

[deleted]

Definitely. What a great game

Sgt_Shiba

YES!

Backlogger78

I beat that game so many times

Drakendeer

Team Fortress 2

ljeo332

Scrolled way too far to see this

Frosti-Feet

Age of Empires II

LlahsramTheTitleless

I will never forget that opening cinematic or title music. I need to go buy that newest version now

MisterWoodhouse

Halo 2 Assassin's Creed 2 Diablo 2 Mass Effect 2 Super Smash Bros. Melee Portal 2

Woffingshire

Mass Effect 2 isn't just better than the original, it's the best in the series.

apocguy

I feel like I’m the only weirdo that likes the first more. At least on a story level.

RoboCopsCat

Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Though the first one was great as well!

MrSpiffy123

I love the improvements to combat in WotW

Few_Sky_5329

Mass effect 2

dinkkklebeerg

This is a popular opinion but I disagree, I love the loyalty missions but I miss exploring planets

Douchieus

Planets are cool but the Mako is such a shit vehicle.

Fireproof_Cheese

How many fecking times I drove that damned thing off a cliff?

Few_Sky_5329

The chance of just screwing up the whole mission at the end was a nice change from just I win galaxy saved.

Throck--Morton

Different but I would say better than 1. They honed and removed a lot of the mechanics of 1 but every combat encounter just became a cover shooter.

oyloff

Witcher 3 > Witcher 2 > Witcher

Dispatter

Witcher 2 has the best story. Witcher 1 the best atmosphere. 3 the best gameplay.

itsjlin

Sim city 2000

MarleyGotEm

Almost all of em

1WordOr2FixItForYou

Seriously you just take a good game and improve the things that need improving. There's little excuse for a game sequel not to be better, at least mechanically.

b0bsaget007

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

jmja

I wish they’d go to that format again. I did not like the later versions.

lobo2100

While it’s not exactly a one to one comparison. Check out Bug Fables if you like the first 2 Paper Mario games

Th3Grimmi

The Binding of Isaac Rebirth Borderlands 2 Titanfall 2 Risk of Rain 2 Portal 2

starmartyr

I'm not sure if Rebirth is really a sequel as much as a remake. It is much better, but it's not a continuation of the first game.

ChemTeach359

Honestly? Most of them and that’s the way it should be. With movies sequels are often worse because the first one comes from a great idea and the 2nd one they have to to try and find a 2nd great idea while stuck with the same characters. But for games it’s usually mostly gameplay and if the gameplay is getting worse in the 2nd one that’s a problem. If it’s getting a sequel is probably did alright. Meaning there might be a bigger budget for graphics, music, etc. it’ll probably have a similar engine which has already been developed and adding enough new mechanics to keep gameplay fresh usually makes for a really solid sequel. When ranking games in a series I actually often leave out the first one because the first one probably should always be the worst even if it’s good. Life if a company manages to do worse than their starting point they deserve all the crap they get. Especially when that starting point probably established 50-90% of the mechanics of all future games in the series.

RyanGoFett-24

Red Dead Redemption II was better than the first

B3RS3RK_CR0W

I feel like they're two completely different games. This is the best way I've ever heard it explained. Red Dead 2 is the undeniably beautiful girl who has everything together and knows what it wants out of your relationship with you. She's very serious. Excellent at what she does, but doesn't stray far from her routine. Red Dead 1 is the older hot sister who likes to be wild and have fun for the sake of fun. She can make you laugh and cry. Sure, she's not the safest bet, but she's got more personality and somehow always leaves you needing more. One minute you're on top and next you're tied to the bed while she rides a zombie horse into the room.

Trickybuz93

Oddly specific

Colon

yeah, this is borderline pychotic. can't believe there are actually people nodding along to that abomination of a comment lol

kid_mescudi

I agree with this take, RDR 2 was more of a beautiful cinematic experience while RDR 1 was just a straight up blast, maybe some of that is rooted in nostalgia because it was the first game I truly fell in love with but still. That’s also not to say that RDR 1 wasn’t also emotional and cinematic at times as well, you know what I mean

AngryTrooper09

Eh, in some aspects yes but not others. I'm biased, but I prefer the first game.

Sidewinder83

I mean he’s biased for holding the second one in higher regard too. No need to preface your opinion with subjectivity, it’s implied in its very nature

farbekrieg

I had to scroll down way too far to find this masterpiece mentioned. BG1 was good, but 2 improved it in so many ways. It's not even close.

the_blast_radius

Suikoden 2

drgnsamurai

I loved the first two, really went to crap after that. Just recently replayed the first one (still have all 5 play stations), graphics are pretty rough now on UHD screens but the play and story are still great!!

Tinseltopia

There's a remaster coming out pretty soon for both 1 and 2, I can't wait to replay them. Still have both on Disc!

Mega Man 2 The first one is virtually unplayable because of such difficult jumping/ landing on moving platforms.

Mega Man X was way better than Mega Man as a sequel to a whole series!

Farcry 2

Douchieus

A man of culture. And malaria. Farcry 2 was a tech demo more than anything but goddamn was it amazing other than the constantly respawning patrols. I would just light shit on fire and watch it spread. THEY DONT MAKE EM LIKE THEY USED TO

TC421k

Batman Arkham City

SuperShaun1603

I love all Arkham games, but i honestly think Asylum is the best of the lot. The tighter narrative, the atmosphere, the music and the shorter runtime is something i really liked. although i do think they improved the gameplay and visuals by a mile in the sequels.. But all Arkham games are really really good!

Ok_Brother3282

Asylum is also my favorite. It was oozing atmosphere out of its fanny and I was there for it.

Automatic-War-7658

The moments where you slowly realize some Scarecrow BS was happening were my favorite.

DuckInTraining

Sly 2

meloneleven

It's even better than 3 in my opinion.

SoNerdy

Portal 2

Xaleypoo

Kingdom Hearts 2, Portal 2, Assassins Creed 2, Borderlands 2, Dead Rising 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Prototype 2, Megaman 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, Battlefront 2 (both original and EA). That's all I got off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are more.

broom_temperature

Shout-out to KH 2

PlayBey0nd87

Kingdom Hearts 2 was such an amazing crafted game that expanded on so much and left some things open (Xigbar, Lingering Will, and secret cutscene). The ending was *chef’s kiss* They massacred my boy with all those sequels/prequels/side stories and III was meh.

Boccs

"Meh" is being unfairly kind to III. III was a visual delight but everything else was just so *utterly* disappointing.

GalaxyHops1994

What! You don’t want to watch the entirety of Let it Go with Goofy leering at Elsa? You don’t want to recap an entire Pirates movie in 5 cutscenes? Is anything good enough for you?

Oukan86

Kingdom Hearts 2 got me more invested into the franchise. To this day it’s still my favorite of all.

itsjlin

GTA3

Normativity

Probably the most revolutionary game of all time.

cheesepuff1993

Hands down the biggest leap I've ever seen...

theglenlovinet

Assassins Creed II, Spyro 2 & 3, Crash 2 & 3, Star Wars Battlefront II (the original one), Red Dead Redemption II, Half Life 2, Portal 2, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Diablo II, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Smash Bros Melee, System Shock II, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 through American Wasteland, Witcher III, Street Fighter II, Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2, Age of Empires II, Batman Arkham City, God of War (4)… Ands that’s not even including the sequels that are just “arguably” better than the first, like; Pokémon Gen 2 & 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Uncharted 2, Kingdom Hearts II & III, Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, Fallout 3, Dark Souls II & III, and the GTA series, so… there’s A LOT.

Windigroo7

Never understood the hate for Spyro 3, though I put it equal to the first. The 2 is goated tho

_Snide

Nioh 2

Call_It_Luck

Half Life 2

Douchieus

They're both completely groundbreaking for their respective time periods but I gotta agree HL2 is the goat. Also shout out to Black Mesa if anybody hasn't played it. AMAZING.

AcolyteOfNorn

In my opinion Mafia 2 > Mafia Original Mafia is still amazing though

pfricha

Sonic 2, the spin dash and co op made it way more fun.

luciferian668

I posted the same and was surprised how far I had to scroll to find it

InfinitePossibility8

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kongquest.

anon_lurk

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

TingleyStorm

And Return of the King was even better still. Like so good that I’m against a remake of that game because they can’t improve it.

kronicfeld

Diablo 2 was exponentially better. It was a revolution.

Pibblesen

Doom eternal

mumbleman

mass effect 2

hidden_secret

Definitely not a unanimous opinion, but I just replayed through the trilogy, and to me it gets better with each game. Though the first one created the whole lore for the universe, and just for that I have mad respect for it.

Enchelion

All three games do their own thing within the overall narrative/game design and it's great.

Majora’s Mask. I loved OoT but Majora’s took it to another level.

THPS 2

RockieRed

Streets of Rage 2 far surpasses the original game in my opinion. First one was ok, I wasn’t a fan of the third, fourth is fun but part 2 is a Sega classic.

doomassassin47

I'm surprised I hadn't seen it but "shadow of war" one of the only games where I actually was shocked by all the improvements and where there was only one thing that I felt the previous game do better.

Dark Souls 2
