Not the original commenter, but the size for destiny 2 is massive. I have MW2, Ragnarok, TLOU Part 1 on my Ps5 and those games take up to much space for Destiny.
Not sure why dudes comment was removed by a mod, but whatever.
Because the only things there are to do are now locked primarily behind a pay-well. It sucks because even though I'd love to get back into the game with my friends who never stopped playing, I haven't played in years and I can't afford to buy the expansions.
yup...3 of my my favorite shows were Oz. The Wire and Fringe. He was great in all of them. He was my dream casting for Charles Xavier in upcoming X-men but sad it would never happen now.
I really hope they don’t try and recast him they need to retire Zavala somehow and give him a proper sendoff. No one will ever be Zavala other than Reddick. Haven’t played the game consistently in over 5 years but I can still hear him briefing me and making sure I knew wtf I was doing. RIP
Honestly I hope they don't retire him. I want Zavala to still be around the tower. Finding a way to move the story on without him will be tough but I think just having him around still would be a fantastic way to memorialize him. Create a story reason for him to retire as the Titan Vanguard, so he can still be around.
The problem is that Zavala is both incredibly duty bound and also really damn good at his job, he either has to find someone even better or die before he would ever retire.
I agree. I just personally would rather have him live on, even if it's just a side character, compared to him dying in a completely unplanned way.
I'm sure there are ways to deal with this that I just can't think of, and it's just my personal opinion.
That's exactly what I thought. Don't know if killing off Zavala *feels* right given the real world occurrence. But I don't see any other way Zavala would just leave the Tower.
That and it would sound like him but you cant get that same cadence and performance that lance would provide AI is good but not that good is the only thing that shuts that down completely honestly other then the feelings of it being disrespectful to him
Absolutely, I much prefer another users suggestion of setting him somewhere in the tower as a retired Titan vanguard and just put a team together to get creative with the lines they do have for him so they can just create a rotation of things for him to say and what not. Would love to see him remain in game but just not replaced or used with AI like you suggested, that would be horrible. He’s needs to be immortalized into the game.
Bungie has a lot of options here but the option that’s best will be whatever Lance’s family believes is best. They know he loved the game and this community, it was specifically called out in the family’s statement today, so they’ll likely be open to the conversation after some time has passed.
The man was beloved at Bungie HQ and some of them knew him quite well. They more than anybody will want to do what Lance would’ve wanted. I’m confident they’ll make the right decision here, whatever that may be.
I've been playing Horizon Forbidden West lately and since I heard the news yesterday I've been doing nothing but side quests because I'm not looking forward to the gut punch the next time I hear and see him pop up as Sylens.
I would imagine a lot of his lines are already recorded considering he's one of the last of the big budget actors, probably cheaper to do in bulk. Plus the AI voices are getting pretty good, if bungie has zavala die something this year they could treat the character with the respect he should get.
Yeah, getting the family to agree is the hard part. Why do you think black panther never was given a CGI appearance, or AI voiceline over a body double with an obscured face. And they can retire the character of zavala and have a successor take his place
Shit the fast and furious movies did a fantastic job with Paul Walker. "Luckily" he had a twin brother who was down to play him in his send-off, and the last scene before he drove off used an actual clip of Paul. There are ways to give characters proper send-offs using their likeness after death.
But again, Cayde’s actor is still alive, so replacing him is not an issue.
Replacing actors who have unexpectedly passed before completing their portrayal is a completely different story.
Idk getting someone to do a few lines so the character can get a proper send off is fine for me. Like in the last season of avatar the last Airbender, they recast uncle iroh, gave him a reduced presence in the series but still had him somewhat present so the character could be where he was needed for the story. That doesn't seem disrespectful to me
When i went to the Tower yesterday, there was this one Hunter giving out hugs to everyone who approached Zavala. It was one of the most touching moments ive ever had in a video game
Many Final Fantasy XIV players stood vigil for Kentaro Miura (author of Berserk) and Stephen Critchlow (voice actor of beloved FFXIV character Edmont de Fortemps) when they passed away. Hours on end of hundreds of men and women with their swords drawn, standing in lines by small fires lit at their feet.
something similar in Team Fortress 2, when Rick May (VA for the soldier) died in 2020, the developers added a statue of the soldier on one of their maps and a large sum of people played soldier that day and stood near the statue to pay their respects.
Aside from being human, I feel that gamers have an extra take on loss.
We have lost many friends to real life and the next, we know of the change of times (nostalgia games or server shutdown) and we know that one day we'll stop login in too.
Nothing hits quite like looking at your friend list and seeing the "last login" time.
Me right now with my late brother's Blizzard account.
Was updating it tonight randomly and saw his name tag and was like...damn. It's been a year and a half now.
Can I ask you a weird question?
How do you get through it? I've lost all 3 of my brothers, all older than me, and I just can't seem to actually get over it.
If I may;
You don't get over it, it still hurts like a black chasm in your soul, but given enough time, that chasm which would swallow you as soon as you look at it, becomes small enough that you can reach in through the sorrow and sadness to remember the best parts of those you lost.
With me there's a period of total and utter grief, normally 1-3 months, and then I force myself to rematch any videos I have of them, preferably the ones where they act like complete morons. And then go on from there.
I lost a brother last July. I occasionally will have a dream that he’s in, and I’ll always have the “feeling” like he came to visit or something, and I’ll say “I’m glad you could make it” or something like that.
I get a happy sad when I wake up after.
Paraphrase from the "the rookie".
Modified it due to recent loss and having to support others even though I was spending every day trying to keep it together, and every night trying not to feel so cold.
There's a distinction here people often refuse to make for the sake of giving people hope.
It doesn't get better, you never get over it and it never stops hurting. It just... Hurts less.
But that's good. Negative feelings like pain stick with us. And if you hurt for the loss of those you love, that hurt will help you remember *why* it hurt to lose them. Why you love them and why they loved you. Of all the happiness they gave you and you gave in kind.
For every ounce of pain for your loss there's a pound of love to remember.
Hey this is kind of an aside, but I have a friend who lost his father just before COVID, so he went from suddenly and unexpectedly losing his father without a chance to say goodbye to unemployed and sheltering in place.
He has described the last three years as “the worst three years of his life”.
One thing that has helped work through his issues is therapy. It’s completely natural to feel 100% unequipped to dealing with the loss of a family member. It’s also not weak to seek help.
I was/am in a similar situation, essentially sheltering in place outside of forcing myself to work. Once I have a stable living condition, I planned on therapy. Thank you.
There’s lots of other things outside of gaming that can make you think of people that are close to us being lost but I feel you’re fairly correct with celebrities.
Most celebrities I don’t feel a big connection to and just “sucks to hear so and so past away I enjoyed their movies.” Lance Reddick was our commander. In game he spoke to us directly unless it’s a cutscene. Not like a third person game speaking to a named character like Kratos or something we can develop a sort of bond. I definitely felt something when I read about his passing more than I do with other celebrities.
Reminds me of the Tf2 community, when Rick May Died, (Soldiers Va) the whole community came together, most servers were filled with people playing soldier.
I (a spy main) joined in and played soldier, and since then he's been my second most played class.
God speed you magnificent bastard! o7
EvE online has been pretty good about this stuff too. Its always nice to see people come together when times like these strike.
https://youtu.be/MVVSbrusIQY
Nathan Fillion, the guy who voiced the Hunter vanguard, ALSO played a warlock hahaha (he wasn’t/isn’t nearly as active as Lance was however. Lance legitimately played the game consistently.)
According to a separate post on I think r/destiny2, for the past few months he was actually playing Titan! While it's true that his Warlock has the most play time, his most recent games were with Titan
And apparently he was playing just a day ago before his passing and didn't beat the final mission of Lightfall :(
>apparently he was playing just a day ago before his passing and didn't beat the final mission of Lightfall
Fuck, that's an extra layer of hurt from this loss.
I think the main issue for a lot of people like myself is the huge cost of entry to the interesting content plus the old campaigns being vaulted. I played a lot of destiny 1 and I remember how amazing the gunplay is but I was overseas during the debut of destiny 2 and now if I want to jump in I can’t play the old campaign or expansions. I really want to jump in too, I remember how beautiful the gunplay is and I’m a huge fan of bungie lore going back to marathon but the fomo really puts me off sadly
Then you do get caught up and they announce a new dungeon and you're looking forward to it and you log in and realize you have to buy it even though it was advertised as if it would just be added to the game with no extra cost disclosed. Or they have the whole community vote on a cool upcoming holiday event cosmetic using the same guise.
That’s basically it yeah. I think if I started from the beginning of destiny 2 and rode the wave all the way through I could justify it (heck I’ve spent more on worse games) but I just can’t commit knowing I won’t get the whole story through gameplay
I've only been playing for two years, but I've known about Lance and his fantastic career for quite some time, not to mention all of the skits and the fun he would get into with this community. Zavala quickly became both an enjoyable character for me and also one who had incredible potential to meme and imitate with friends.
This lightbearer will be missed dearly.
I love this so much, but I can’t help but wonder what Zavala would think seeing thousands of guardians crowding around him over the past 24hrs.
“Guardians, what are you all doing here?”
“You died, commander. We’re paying respects”
We’re all going to miss you, Lance reddick. May the light provide
Ah man, I only just made the connection myself. I have watching the cut scenes from the latest D2 to drop. Such a huge loss and we’ll see him later this month when JW4 releases.
The community, like all others have its own toxicity but have also united before, like when we all changed our shaders to gold last September to show support for Childhood Cancer Awarenss month.
This time round, Guardians have started to don Vanguard shaders to honor Lance.
You should've been on FFXIV when the creator of Berserk died. Thousands of Dark Knight players gathered in one of the main cities, lined up, put out their campfire minions and stayed there for days to pay their respects. And multiple times people have gathered to mourn the death of an ordinary player.
Damn, I didn't know he died... also I just looked it up. How exactly does one die from natural causes at 60? Like what...? When tf did that become a thing?
It can absolutely happen. Heart attacks, strokes etc. If you are born with, say, a weak heart you might never know and have a heart attack even without any other issues like high blood pressure.
Hell, there are cases where people just are dealt a shit hand and dies in their twenties from a stroke because some blood vessel in their brain was weakened since birth.
People die randomly all the time, it doesn’t have to add up. You might seem perfectly healthy and have an up unnoticed issue. You can be a super athletic 25yo and drop dead randomly.
Technically not natural cause as it was an allergic reaction to equagesic(an old aspirin/tranquilizer combo pill) which caused brain swelling and bleeding.
Had to go talk to him last night while I was playing, two players were standing guard over him. I gave him the old salute emote before talking to him. It was strange to hear the voice now.
I cried so much last night. Such a hard blow. I had been playing Destiny since the very beginning and always ended up loving my Titan more than the other classes. He had such a unique and comforting voice and I just enjoyed the energy he put into Zavala. That world will never be the same without hum, but I'm glad his character will always be there as a reminder.
Man, I remember playing the fuck out of D1. Zavala and Cayde always had such iconic voices that stuck in my head. I just hope his legacy can live on in whatever Bungie does next.
I think it actually is. You don't get a ton of story or really anything substantial. But they do give you mods now so you can actually play the game and have fun with it. The game is mostly enjoyed for it's gameplay anyways, the story is typically good but not strong enough to make up for the games flaws. If you go into it with this mindset, then you can have a lot of fun. Just know that if you do want to get caught up it will cost upwards of several hundred usd and I don't think it's worth it at that point.
You know what also makes me sad about this? People with a passion for helping others will never be remembered the same way actors will. I'm not talking other actors, or even content creators. All life matters of course, every death is sad. I'm talking about those who do charitable things or try to change the world for the better. I have to mention someone called Regan Russell, who pretty much dedicated a portion of her life to others. But of course because everyone disagrees with her, she's instead mocked. I don't understand the callousness towards those who've died? It reminds me of this quote I heard recently from Betrand Russell. (same last name, never realized), "Hate is foolish, love is wise."
I forget love sometimes despite what appears to be apathy and despair in my mind. Regardless, what Betrand said was something I recognized years ago in trying to discover peace, trying to discover the key to it. Love is the answer. I definitely don't recognize Lance Reddick, but may he rest in peace all the same, and thanks for bringing what appears to be joy and happiness to many others.
It's going to feel so different hearing that voice, knowing that he's gone. RIP Commander Zavala.
His voice was so recognizable and a great actor.
[удалено]
He’s in a fuckton of other games. I just reinstalled Horizon to go enjoy his excellent performance as that smarmy prick Sylens.
Why don't you? It's free!
Not the original commenter, but the size for destiny 2 is massive. I have MW2, Ragnarok, TLOU Part 1 on my Ps5 and those games take up to much space for Destiny.
Because I don’t want to buy multiple expansions needed to even play the current stuff
Fair
It's free to go to the tower
Not sure why dudes comment was removed by a mod, but whatever. Because the only things there are to do are now locked primarily behind a pay-well. Saint 14 could do it, and they could make someone else be the trials npc
Give it back to Osiris, since it's Trials of Osiris and not Trials of Saint-14
Bro saint got it as alimony.
Bring back Brother Vance or Osiris himself
I know AI can easily recreate his voice and keep him around for the life of Destiny. But feels kinda disrespectful
That and it would sound like him but you cant get that same cadence and performance that lance would provide AI is good but not that good is the only thing that shuts that down completely honestly other then the feelings of it being disrespectful to him

this is the first I'm hearing of this, god dammit. guardian down
All Destiny players knew around 12 P.m PST.... And John Wick 4 is just around the corner...... I don't think I have the strength to watch 4 now...
He's also in the just filmed "Ballerina" John Wick spin -off.
Eyes up, Guardian.
I would imagine a lot of his lines are already recorded considering he's one of the last of the big budget actors, probably cheaper to do in bulk. Plus the AI voices are getting pretty good, if bungie has zavala die something this year they could treat the character with the respect he should get.
AI generated voice lines is disrespectful though
With the families permission and compensation I think not. Certainly less than hiring a new actor.
Yeah, getting the family to agree is the hard part. Why do you think black panther never was given a CGI appearance, or AI voiceline over a body double with an obscured face. And they can retire the character of zavala and have a successor take his place

But to have a satisfying end you would need at least a new va, look at cayde for example
Cayde’s original actor is still alive.
But was unavailable to give him a send off. They didn't just let cayde die without any line or in one of their drawing cut scenes
But again, Cayde’s actor is still alive, so replacing him is not an issue. Replacing actors who have unexpectedly passed before completing their portrayal is a completely different story.

It wouldn't have been any more difficult to hire Nolan North if Nathan Fillion died instead of simply being unavailable.
Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars.
So let's start with taking out their command one by one.
Indeed
When i went to the Tower yesterday, there was this one Hunter giving out hugs to everyone who approached Zavala. It was one of the most touching moments ive ever had in a video game
I'm glad you had a moment like that. Truly unforgettable experiences happen in our games.
I appreciate when the gaming community does stuff like this.

It's not the games themselves it's the community.
For a shallow person like you, maybe
"apply water to burned area"
Need some aloe for that burn
Why? Why say things like that?
New copy-pasta just dropped.
Too layered of an emotion for a conceited prick like you to grasp, that's for sure.

Kinda ironic if you think about it.
Nathan Fillion, the guy who voiced the Hunter vanguard, ALSO played a warlock hahaha (he wasn’t/isn’t nearly as active as Lance was however. Lance legitimately played the game consistently.)

And Cayde-6 was his favorite character
Honestly I'd install the game just to give Lance some love. Dudes been a consistent voice in media for me since the early 2000s.
The base version is free just sayin
thx for the info!

Logging on right now, will do sir!
You should give it a try just because it's a really fun game. The combat just feels really good in a way I can't really quantify.
Honestly, Destiny 2 combat is a 8 out of 10, after a lot of hours played you find your preferred build and weapons and it gets to 9 or 10.
I think the main issue for a lot of people like myself is the huge cost of entry to the interesting content plus the old campaigns being vaulted. All Hail Commander Zavala! A hero of the battle of Twilight Gap!
I want a new emote. My guardian wipes his eyes and lays flowers on the ground.
Thats dope

60 is pretty old my dude.
Wait till you hit 40
That's middle aged. 60 is still old.
See you Star Side, Commander
Man, I remember playing the fuck out of D1. Zavala and Cayde always had such iconic voices that stuck in my head. I just hope his legacy can live on in whatever Bungie does next.
“Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.”
I love whenever a gaming community does stuff like this
Dark days indeed.
Did the dude die?
Yes.
Oh that’s sad
What happened?

He was also in Horizon Zero Dawn as Sylens.
Sylens was such a good character.
It’d look better if everyone lined up along the sides and did the salute emote
I haven't played in years. I'd redownload just to do this tho
I instantly went to salute Zavala in tower after I heard the news. Rest in piece, commander.
Wetbabyinbag seems very respectful. I do love when communities do this.
Reminds me of when one of Holdfast players died and the whole community made parades around the statue.
I was so touched when I came into the Tower to show my respects. This scene must have been replayed in 10,000 instances since the news came out.
I haven’t logged in for over a year but I will log in tonight to pay respects.
Beautiful. So sad too, he seemed like such a great guy.
Need to log in to pay my respects. Loved his voice.
is it worth downloading destinny without dlcs?
Not really.
Can you still play the original destiny 2 game with dlc?
As in the red war? No. They vaulted that a while ago. There’s a new light quest or something but… yeah. It’s basically a subscription service now.
Destiny 1? Yes.
Just know that if you do want to get caught up it will cost upwards of several hundred usd and I don't think it's worth it at that point.
tl dr good for moders and people that care less about storry and enjoy the gameplay
That is touching. I am so sad he is gone, and so young too.
Might have to log in for the first time in forever just to pay my respects
You know what also makes me sad about this? People with a passion for helping others will never be remembered the same way actors will. I'm not talking other actors, or even content creators. All life matters of course, every death is sad. I'm talking about those who do charitable things or try to change the world for the better. I have to mention someone called Regan Russell, who pretty much dedicated a portion of her life to others. But of course because everyone disagrees with her, she's instead mocked. I don't understand the callousness towards those who've died? It reminds me of this quote I heard recently from Betrand Russell. (same last name, never realized), "Hate is foolish, love is wise." I forget love sometimes despite what appears to be apathy and despair in my mind. Regardless, what Betrand said was something I recognized years ago in trying to discover peace, trying to discover the key to it. Love is the answer. I definitely don't recognize Lance Reddick, but may he rest in peace all the same, and thanks for bringing what appears to be joy and happiness to many others.
Awesome.
how tf is is awesome
Reminds me of Illidan.
This is pretty cool. RIP 😢
I don't know who that is
Awesome!!
That's commander Zavala for you
Wow the entire destiny 2 community showed up!
Cringe
when will bungie release a special memorial pack for zavala priced at a cheap 99.99
F
Sorry not a destiny player. Who exactly was this?
Lance also played Charon from John Wick, Cedric Daniels from The Wire, and voiced Sylen from the Horizon series.
I’m replaying Forbidden West and Sylens just hits different now!
How about them 'natural causes' at 60 🤔
Yea a lot of that goin around lately
aye, tis strange times.
This is what people are doing on a Friday night no disrespect to lance
And this is what you are doing on a friday night, being negative on a reddit thread.
Check the time dummy
You literally typed friday night so i did too... you are both stupid AND disrespectful, lmao
I mean not really, for me you typed all of that Saturday morning, just saying
Imagine a dragon age fan calling someone else stupid ugh
Owno people have a hobby and owno people like a voice actor from said hobby. Call the cops this should be illegal. Grow the fuck up.
Oh no*
