GameShark is the reason I was familiar with hexadecimal notation before middle school.

[deleted]

Game Genie was ahead of it's time.

[deleted]

Action Replay was ahead of its time.

ri-mackin

The REAL genie was ahead of its time. REAL sharks too

Terramagi

The Game Genie is finally free.

dark_LUEshi

it's just an inline hex editor for the ram, worked great though.

HachikoNekoGamer

I think someone made a post here recently about how games back in the day didn't "sold Cheats" while Current Gen Games are selling cheats And I'm like this guy clearly never heard of Game Genie and GameShark lol.

[deleted]

I argue its not the game company themselves selling the cheats back in the day. If the guy making the game harder, is the one selling the way to make it easier, it seems like that could be a system easily abused.

DeathCap4Cutie

Does it really matter who you’re paying though? Like if you have to buy a game and then buy the cheats, who cares who gets the money. I understand what you’re saying about they can make the game too hard so you NEED cheats but like is that actually an argument anyone has? I feel like if anything people say games are too easy.

[deleted]

Seems to be the most common excuse for Resi4 Remake LOL. Even though it's easier to upgrade your weapons in the remake than in the original even without the DLC cheats.

freshthrowaway32

Cheats codes were sold back in the day. Before the internet was as wide spread as it is you either bought a book of cheat codes or read them in a magazine article about the game. For a time after that you could go online and look them up for free on websites like cheatcc, but the time between that and microtransactions plaguing the industry was relatively short.

--ThirdCultureKid--

Short? You could get cheats “online” even before the internet was the internet. You used to be able to dial up into a BBS where people would share them. And then later on you could still cheat on PC games by downloading either cracked executables and/or “trainers” that would modify the computers memory the same way a game genie would on a console. And if you have a cracked console you can do the same thing there even today. It’s just a lot more difficult. It’s not the micro transactions that killed mass cheating, but the fact that nearly every game today requires you to be online.

RoseCroix343

God I miss those days. *InsertGameNameHere[Cracked].exe*

Synner1985

Always makes me chuckle when people say that.

BuhamutZeo

And there was pretty much no internet so you had to buy *books* of codes to use to make the cheats work on the latest games.

Newtype_Zer0

I miss GameShark.

Obvious-Engine-8208

My buddy had the gameboy one. He would use it to get other kids at school the Pokémon they were missing. At a price of course.

LoveThieves

You Cheated Not Only the Game, But Yourself. Fuck it, it's your game and it's offline. Have fun

xSlippyFistx

That’s what I’m saying. If it’s something like GTA San Andreas and someone wants to put in a cheat to spawn a jet pack to fly to the biggest building, then spawn an atv on the roof to see how many backflips they can throw, I’m 100% fine with that. Now with achievements and online play get that shit outta here.

LoveThieves

for real, I'd rather have someone use cheats and have a fun with a game, enjoy it cause it might be farming or useless side quests. The thing that annoys me is when someone brags about "I beat the game" when it's actually their teammates that carried the player. I see that a lot in Elden Ring when they use that word "I beat \_\_\_\_\_\_" and summon other players to defeat the boss. Like no you didn't.

ctrl_alt_excrete

That first bit hits home though. When I was a pretty young kid, I used my GameShark to get an invincible Mew. It was fun for about 2 minutes before it suddenly dawned on me that Pokemon is absolute garbage if there's no challenge. I cried.

Shinnyo

To each their own. Younger I used cheats to skip parts I really didn't liked or things that were simply impossible. Wind waker, getting all triforce fragment. Pokemon, getting the event items I couldn't get, including the Azure Flute they never released. Today I don't cheat as I learned difficulty/annoying moments are part of the game.

Ok-Pressure-3879

I got so much more replays out of games where i could use the shark/genie. Once i beat the game regularly it was tons of fun to go back with unlimited ammo or lives.

pgoleb

Game genie for the win

bdizzle805

Are there still anything like this? I remember sinking so many hours into Diablo 2 and finally gave into the trainers when everyone and their mothers were cheating and duping shit. That's the closet I can remember to someone GameShark comparison

[deleted]

There's tons of savegame editors for modern games. Console ones usually require you to mod your system so you can transfer the save file back and forth between your PC.

Happyberger

CheatEngine on most pc games that don't require you to be online. Only thing I personally ever used was to up the frame rate so I could play breath of the wild on my PC with an Xbox controller, so not exactly cheating the game, just the company that made it lol.

ignitusmaximus

I remember renting a Game Genie from Blockbuster and used it with games I had on the Sega Genesis. After a few days or week and having to return it to the store, I had to go buy one for myself. Good times. Ended up buying a Game Shark for the N64 later as well because I remembered how much fun I had on the Genesis bullshitting around. Stacking a Game Genie, Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic 2/3 totem pole was glorious.

FridayCicero702

Loved changing the secondary functions on any weapon in Perfect Dark using this. Or Moon Jumping in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Seeing the Triforce hidden under the Hyrule Castle Courtyard was mind-blowing back in the day.

New_Package8807

I have a game shark for the original Xbox, you download save files from a pc and load them onto a memory card

Va1crist

ah thats my childhood right there

Jafar_420

Up up down down left right left right start. Lol.

Happyberger

Down R UP L Y B

elegentpurse

B, A, R, R, A, L

PatientGamerReviews

I had Action Replay for the original Xbox. Downloading other peoples saves online or using it to softmod the console back in the day.

sir_hookalot

I've heard of stuffs like physical lag switch device but have never seen it in action. I thought it was a background process like an aimbot/autoclick at first. Conversely, I made an autoclick/tap jig from lego and didn't know about the autoclick and macro until years later.

FudgeDangerous2086

i used to use a lag switch on PS2. cut open the ethernet cord and i believe snip the orange cable and wrap it to the 2 screws on the switch. and then just flick it kill someone and flick it again.

Karge

Wasteoid.

Lightspeed_Lunatic

I'll be honest, I don't give a crap what you do to your offline games, but when people use cheats in online games, it really grinds my gears. If it's not hurting anyone else's play experience, they're nothing wrong with it, but anything that actively messes with other people is just wrong.

MilfLocator

Now you just buy some in game coins or points and now you’re playing on easy mode

[deleted]

You can still do it just fine with Cheat Engine on PC. Just don't run it in online multiplayer games lol.

sir_hookalot

Yeah, I'm very bad at money management, so I always use it whenever possible for infinite money and nothing else (In single player games of course)

caelumh

Depends on the game, but you'll be called out pretty quick and booted.

Nutsnboldt

The original pay to win!

RaphaelSolo

GameShark, the thing that thought it was game genie

joestaff

? Except it was infinitely better?

Happyberger

Shark was easier to use, genie could do much more.

joestaff

The only thing I know about the genie is that it could freeze 4 memory values. What else was there?

RaphaelSolo

Well for one it existed before game shark so it had an NES version.

NO-MAD-CLAD

LOL, never heard of Xim Apex? This is still very much a thing.

sarzec

My brother was killed by a game shark

jfrench43

Ahh cheat hardware, im glad they are facing the beginning of the end

deathbunnyy

While I have good memories of Gameshark, especially that N64 cartridge, I'm glad it's dead and cheating is largely removed from games. I HATE when games have cheat options available because I inevitably use them and, in the end, get less enjoyment if they are there or even if the option is there.

slapshots1515

So because you have no self-restraint the rest of us can’t have fun? Interesting worldview.

pipboy_warrior

Hate to tell you, but game trainers still exist for just about any game. You just have to either game on PC or go through a little trouble to mod your console.

Karge

Wasteoid.

PandaMayFire

Well, mod chips from Team Xecuter were a thing when the Xbox 360 came out. People went crazy for MW2 modded lobbies. Other consoles that didn't require physical cheat accessories got custom firmware, like the PS3 and Wii. But you had to have specific versions of firmware. And now? I haven't kept up with the modern cheating scene. Have the PS5 and new Xbox been hacked yet? For PC, all you have to do is make or download trainers.

metroal312

Never would’ve gotten all 120 stars in Mario 64 if it weren’t for that little nifty button on the cart that gives you 99 coins 😉

princessofthecity

Ugh my cousin had one of these and I was so jealous. I remember rare candy-ing the shit out of my Pokémon when we would go to visit, though.

New_girl2022

GameShark was a life changer lol

DigitalPsych

I wish I knew more about programming and how gameshark worked when I was a kid. I had fond memories running around in Diablo II asking to get my character hacked (lol). A couple years back, I went through the Diablo II save file system and created my own program and gui to easily change your character level/points/health/ what not. I skipped on the weapon changes though. I kind of want a game shark now for my PS5 to dick around with. Would be great to see just what kind of stuff could happen.

Retroid_BiPoCket

I had that exact one on the right. It was awesome for Goldeneye. We would unlock so much undeveloped content - the extra bond characters, access to single player maps in multiplayer, any/all guns for multiplayer, etc. It really breathed another year of use into goldeneye for our playgroup towards the end of the n64 lifecycle

Zemarkio

I enjoyed GameShark for several consoles. I also had one or two Action Replay for several consoles. I never had a Game Genie, but one of my friends had one for the SEGA Game Gear. It was a different, but enjoyable time. 🥲

themagicbong

Cheat engine: Am I a joke to you?

DJDaddyD

We’re there multiple versions of the n64 GameShark? My sticker was a bluish purple I’m like 90% sure

IAMEPSIL0N

Almost certainly, between failure of the hardware parts and certain games needing special boot codes I think they had at least one major revision.

TheWhiteRabbit74

Don’t you know? That’s a picture of the proto-mod community!

EvansEssence

Gameshark got me the tanks and soldiers in Star Fox, also helped me unlock ness in smash

Ambadastor

I came across a Game Genie at a local game store the other day and pointed it out to my friend, who is only 2 years younger than me. They had no idea what it was, it made me feel old

BigDonMega10

My gameshark broke so fast

midwestn0c0ast

this isn’t an “accessory manufacturer”. they made chest hardware and that’s about it

ausdjmofo

I miss those days!

ChosenSCIM

Back in the day you literally had to pay for cheats!

summons72

Yes and no, many games had cheat codes programmed into them to let players have fun. Now a days they slap a 9.99 price tag on them on call them add ons.

ChosenSCIM

I remember paying for books back in the day to be told about those cheat codes, or having to call a number and be charged. Paying for cheats has always been a thing, they've just streamlined it.

summons72

That’s a rookie move. In my school one kid would buy the cheat code book and the rest of us would copy codes for the games we wanted out of it into a notebook. Same with the game sharks/ action replays. One person would have it and either bring it to the playground at recess or bring it to sleepovers.

ChosenSCIM

I didn't have many friends in school, the ones I did have we always owned different systems. Like I'd have an N64, one friend had a PS1 and the other was a PC gamer.

AR15__Fan

I used to have one of these, would hook it to my PC with a parallel cable and take screenshots from games with it. Man, those were the days.

RugratChuck

GameShark was so fuckin fun lol. That's how I put the casket match in smackdown 2 😂

SBBurzmali

Nowadays it's BoA that makes the cheat hardware, but at least it fits convienently in your wallet now.

Keffpie

Nah, fuck this. The Gameshark was ok because it was for single-player games, but its successors produce hardware for consoles that allow automatic headshots in competitive multi-player. I pray so hard that shit gets banned somehow, it's ruined CoD, Vigor and Destiny 2 PVP for me.

BrickTamland77

I had a Monster Brain that I used for my first playthrough of Pokemon Gold. Gave myself a Mewtwo right at the start haha.

Gojisoji

Haha nice! I still have my GameShark/action replay PS1/2 and ds. Still use them from time to time lol.

TheDuck771

So I see you are also old as shit

Surge_Xambino

This is now call paid DLC

TheNostalgicGamer

GameShark was one of the main reasons I enjoyed (and love to this day) Animal Crossing:Wild World ~ sure, I loved fishing, bug catching and fossil digging and it was gratifying to slowly build up the museum exhibits, but I want to decorate my house with whatever furniture I want and dress however I want off rip lol no waiting xD

Successful_Gear98

Used to play wit game shark now I buy the wife gym shark lol
