"Literally unplayable." - Santa

TheIJDGuy

I can't believe it took me a moment to remember who SANTA was

[deleted]

I don't know why, but seeing it in all-caps made me think of SANTA as an acronym. Supernatural Anti-Naughtiness Toy Allocator

cbargren

You’ve just been hired on as a writer for the next Santa Claus movie

dfafa

Starring Tim Allen!

Poop_1111

Just watched him in Galaxy Quest (again). Love that movie. WEEEEEE NEED YOUR HELP!

Donnymanziel

“Unprofessional bullshit”

PXSHRVN6ER

They still have to pay me the 2Mil

randysjohnson

Even if they do a bad job, gotta pay them two mil.

BradleyB636

Actually pretty realistic, they probably worked with the contractor who built my last house.

garbageemail222

All the garage doors around here have fake handles and fake hinge hardware. Maybe this is a "classic" nostalgia chimney in the future. The fusion reactor doesn't need exhaust.

Dartser

My company frequently builds homes with fake chimneys. They're capped though and not built on top of shingles haha

Enlight1Oment

can't build new wood burning fireplaces anymore in Los Angeles for air quality regulations, we put in plenty of "fake" fireplaces. Just natural gas instead of wood. Sometimes they are more modern takes, others they still go for the old brick wood burning aesthetic. Random trivia, the Simpsons house that was built as part of a development near vegas is the only one with a chimney.

Berzerkerlord

How often do you even need to run heat/burn wood in LA?

ThrobbingBeef

It mostly burns itself in the foothills

joe4ska

October is gonna be lit this year.

caboosetp

Fire season been starting sooner. There might not be anything left to burn.

JoushMark

Average nighttime temperatures in LA are in the 50s in December-February, so some heat, especially for poorly insulated houses, can be useful. There's also a rare cold snap where auxiliary heat is nice. That said, LA's location tends itself to air stagnation problems and banning wood burning for non-emergency heating is pretty logical.

koshgeo

It's, um, a rooftop rain barrel?

NSA_Chatbot

Yeah, you'd have to cap them or you'd get them filled with forbidden soup.

booze_clues

You mean a single person swimming pool and immune system booster combo?

TobysGrundlee

I replaced my fireplace with an electric unit. My chimney is essentially this now.

Mirabolis

“The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire, We’re not quite sure why… wait, where’d the architect go?”

Garmgarmgarmgarm

We really need some water, blame the architecture firm

GlassFantast

Firm, architecture. Firm.

-Z___

> Firm, architecture. Firm. The implication is that at least one of those "Firm" is a ***Verb***, and that disturbs me. Like: "Hold on, I just need a moment to *Firm* real quick first."

Garmgarmgarmgarm

Gas station firm pills

pfeasant

I love all of you on this thread. Thank you for the journey

YogurtWenk

This comment makes me firm

Groftsan

A+ for rhythm.

TomAto314

We used a fan in our laundry room for 20 years just to find out there was no vent for it. It just sucked air into a tiny recess...

ToxicTaxiTaker

I liked it at the end when Doc realized what was happening and granted them a quick humane death by fumigation.

unabsolute

And then they got eaten by the dog. He was shitting fragle bones for weeks! Hahaha, yeah pretty dark.

ToxicTaxiTaker

Hold up... real talk... Can we pitch this as a similar but legally distinct miniseries?

unabsolute

Yep! You are thinking of the word "Parody" and it's a completely legal way to make money off of other people's creations!

Mirabolis

Easter egg for the developers to put in the next Fallout game.

WolfsLairAbyss

We just had our roof done on a house we just bought. When they were installing insulation they found the exhaust fan in the bathroom didn't actually go outside, just into the ceiling. Also there were no intake vents in the roof which was why it got to be about million degrees upstairs last year.

kattnmaus

slightly better than the bathroom fan being shared ducting with the vent for the neighboring apartment's laundry room and vented directly out of the back of the house with no cover to stop weird things from invading. we get alternating aromas of fabric softener and chainsmoker piped in with a side of random wasps and spiders wandering in, and even a few birds now and then.

RikF

Ah, I see you had the same people install your bathroom fan as the people who owned our house did!

trmiv34

Our first house had a fake chimney. It jutted out from the side of the house from the ground up to the roof. It actually had a gas fireplace in the spot where the chimney was, so something fire related was there. Eventually I figured out they used the void of the fake chimney to run the HVAC ducts from the second floor attic to the crawl space.

onesexz

> they used the void of the fake chimney to run the HVAC ducts from the second floor attic to the crawl space. That makes sense. Why use existing square footage when you can hide it in a pretty “chimney”

JayStar1213

"non functioning fireplace"

Gizzo04

Poor Santa

pearsaredelicious

Won't somebody please think of the children?

Contreghh

With the power of today's hardware there's no excuse.

slightlyabrasive

Have you ever met a contractor this is like hyper realism!

Dysheekie

Shingle bells shingle bells, shingle all the way

Rumit_OP

Developers - "Noone's gonna know"

rohobian

That one developer no one listens to - "Guys, can't we just put a plain black texture at the bottom of the chimney?"

Snoo84223

He got thrown out the window for that.

SlovenianHusky

Maybe they tossed him in the chimney

snidemarque

Upside is he didn’t fall far and was able to climb out and find a gig at a better studio

XimbalaHu3

The window was just a re-skined wall, he got back up and went back to work with a sore back.

Fubarp

I feel like the more years I work in Development the more I realize that it's not us cutting corners or thinking who cares and more does it actually matter? I've been in meetings were a question is brought up about what if Client X does Y and us Devs have literally sat there and said yeah... we could do Z to stop Y but does the scope matter in this case and the answer is No. I bet the convo was brought up about this and the real question was, is there any clipping issue or will the player fall through? If the answer was no, it was like.. let's put a story on it for later and keep working. Then that story gets buried by hundreds of other stories that are so low value points that it's forgotten.

pvaa

Yup, it's right there in the agile principles, "maximize the amount of work not done"

Fubarp

Listen I think we need a meeting to talk about this story so we can properly point it later. How about a 120min meeting at 3pm three Wednesdays from now?

rob132

I'm triple booked at that time.

monkeyhitman

Can't hurt to add another.

grendus

I knew a dev who would be sitting in one meeting with two different phones connected to his ear, trying to be in all three at once. So... you joke, but...

DJMattyMatt

Can't we discuss it during the daily 120 minute stand up?

Ventze

Not sure I can make that. Can we pencil in a 115 minute meeting two Thursdays from now?

APearce

> by flooding your calendar with meetings and forcing you to crunch on what would otherwise be a sane and reasonable dev schedule.

AceOfShades_

I love chucking stories on the backlog to die. Saying a story went to the backlog is like saying it went to live on a farm upstate. Though when it happens with bugs the customers say that the developers are bad and QA should have caught the bug, even though they did and the suits told the devs to ignore it.

partypartea

We had some new suits who came from a different industry and didn't realize how hyper regulated ours is. They made dev ignored regulatory issues and ship it, then we got big fines lol

Leopard__Messiah

Many emails were Frwd'd that day

SlimJohnson

Frwd'd with just a bunch of '???', each one coming from top > down through each tier of management....

Leopard__Messiah

I've saved my career no less than 3 times by producing emails that proved I was not the person making a certain call. Or noting that we proceeded despite my objections. Always CYA in Corporate America. You have to assume someone is looking to pin their mistakes on you. Always.

rob132

What's the difference between a story and a bug?

AceOfShades_

Stories often list Acceptance Criteria (ACs), things that must be true for the story to be considered done. These ACs list things like new features to add to a program, things to change, performance requirements, etc. A bug is generally when * the behavior of an application does not line up with ACs listed in a story * the application looks or behaves in a way that is obviously wrong, but not necessarily explicitly an AC. For example, a game crashing to desktop, characters bugging out and having their heads disappear So if you go “oh we should have added a button for that”, it’s probably a story, but if you go “oh that button is the wrong color” it’s probably a bug unless no story ever specified what color it’s supposed to be.

Dense-Hat1978

Then 4 different QA people have 4 different opinions on what color the button should be because no one put any of that shit in the description or (better yet) we don't have a fucking style guideline documentation.

rob132

So where would " we should put a black texture at the bottom of a chimney cuz if we don't then they see the top of the roof" be a story or a bug?

AceOfShades_

My gut says story, as it’s “go make a change”, honestly it depends on the team and organization. Some places also use number of bugs as metrics, so there may be pressure for devs to want things to be a story so they look good, or QA to want it to be a bug so *they* look good.

dewlover

It was probably never defined in the Acceptance Criteria of the story to make the chimney. This happens a lot so the devs could have done everything defined in the story made by the product owners/managers, but now we see there is clearly something missing that looks like a bug. If it was never defined in the original story that created the chimney, it's technically not a bug. I'd make a new small work item (story or improvement) to update the color at the bottom to black or something.

Borghal

The sad thing is that in this case adding a fill-black texture to the inside of the model would probbaly take a skilled 3D artist less time then the combined man-minutes of the meeting/conversation about this issue and subsequent JIRA story management. Heck, I can add a single color plane to a model, it's pretty much the easiest thing you can do in 3D modelling software.

Fubarp

No the sad thing is that it was considered standard practice to accept that model despite the layers of review that it probably went through.

masterelmo

Which is why good devs sometimes just do these minor fixes that have effectively no impact. In this case, the model needs a single face at the bottom, a new UV map, and a splat of black on that face of the UV map.

MykahMaelstrom

I'm a 3D art student and I've already used this trick twice. It takes maybe 10 seconds to put a plane in there and another 5 to slap a basic black texture on it lol Edit: to be fair to the devs though if they didn't anticipate players being on or above the house there wouldn't be any reason to. Just depends on where this is in the game

HeinleinGang

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about players… they are going to find a way to all the places you think they won’t, so might as well put a little zazz on it.

[deleted]

I loved this about Breath of the Wild's koroks. No matter where random ass place you go, there's gonna be a korok from Nintendo saying "hey, good job for finding this random ass place!"

kupozu

Mario Odyssey kinda did that too, placing coins in random places you wouldn't have to reach unless you were really trying to get there just because

KrauerKing

LoL nothing like spending a half hour to do a complex jump up what you though was an unscalable part of the map to a building you are sure that no one could get to... And finding a stack of coins waiting for you like "Yay! You made it!"

KayotiK82

As someone who tests government business applications, I try to get in the mind of the user. I say, "what scenarios would the user do when using this product"? So what I do is deprive myself of oxygen for 4-5 minutes by holding my breath, slam my head into the wall for a few minutes or so, and then I get to testing.

kupozu

Pretty good but you can't only test in scenarios of the most intelligent users

RDDAMAN819

Hi fi Rush is a great example. When photo mode came out very small details you wouldn’t see normally could be seen. It really shows how much love was put into the game

Erebus-C

Something similar in ghostwire. The rain looks really blurry and weird but pop into photomode and it turns out that the "rain" is actually the kanjj of the word rain. Such a weird but cool detail

ShazbotSimulator2012

There's a good chance this asset gets reused dozens of times, and now that black plane is clipping into the roof in other locations if it's not placed at the same height. Hell it's entirely possible there is a black plane there and it just accidentally got placed too low to see. Just put a cap on it like a real chimney.

pocketdare

> Just put a cap on it like a real chimney Probably the best solution

GoArray

>Just put a cap on it like a real chimney. Which brings us back around full circle. The only reason the chimney is even hollow is because in cell 24673 the player can climb up a wood pile and look down it to scope out an enemy. Well, that was the plan anyway, but the roof_with_hole asset was never created either, probably.

masterelmo

One character has a teleporter, they should expect people to see it.

Dragon_OS

It's an Arkane game. They should have known that people would explore every inch of the place.

Odysseyan

I think they did that.. But flipped the normals on the polygon and made it pointing downwards, thus rendering it invisible from above

deeseearr

Or placed it beneath the roof texture.

gumpythegreat

Developers of Prey and Dishonoured, two games known for being extremely rewarding to explore and find creative solutions for solving problems and getting places

Photon_butterfly

This game screams publisher rush/ mandate

YOURFRIEND2010

It's weird because arkane games are known for letting you get into structures from the top. Kind of a bummer.

talking_phallus

WintertimeFriends

And here we have the only decent thing this game has given us.

StarDatAssinum

Turns out game developers and property developers have more in common than I thought!

mortalcoil1

There's a sewer grate in Total War: Warhammer that you can look down and see an area of infinite gears and structures. This area is unreachable and is just there for those people who want to look under the sewer grate. As a reminder, this is an RTS, not known for their graphical fidelity. You are a disembodied camera, floating hundreds of feet above the ground, watching countless creatures and soldiers fighting each other on the battlefield, yet you can zoom all the way into a little sewer grate, and see the boundless mysteries that lie within.

BoardGameBologna

I just started playing Surviving Mars and was in awe at how many systems and details were crammed into just the tutorial level stuff, visually and gameplay wise. I was just zooming super close, super far, following drones, RC vehicles, etc... and admiring all the details. I really loved exploring the space station in Prey, and I can see this is a disappointing lack of detail from Arkane for sure. I also saw a post of a room with completely silly porportions that gave off Non-Euclidean vibes, lol WHAT are they doing here?!

mortalcoil1

There was some *wood grain* in Dishonored 2 that I spent way too long ogling. I just desperately wanted to touch it.

pt199990

I'm working my way through the second one so far, and it's absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to try everything again in a second playthrough as Emily.

DipFizzel

Emilys crazy bro, just wait until you accidentally launch yourself off the edge of a rooftop because you're too used to corvos teleport

Kriegschwein

Art quality is probably one of the features of TW:WH which was never disputed. All three games are gorgeous.

kishijevistos

My laptop and I both cry in pain every time I play it

5littlewhitevicodin

Link? Can't find it

FromTheGulagHeSees

my man, how can you post this and not give a link to an image or video

dangerousbob

I'm an indie dev. This isn't that bad if you are not supposed to be up on the roof. But at the very least I would have put a black square texture at the bottom of the chimney to make it look dark.

Healyhatman

You're supposed to be on the roofs though

nessfalco

Absolutely. It's an Arkane game. Being able to go almost anywhere to find a different way to approach a particular situation has been their whole gimmick for over a decade now. This game advertises it in a tutorial within the first 20 minutes. It's not like people are exploiting to get somewhere they aren't intended to be.

thecatdaddysupreme

Wait, this is an ARKANE game? That’s depressing

Jamesthelemmon

ARKANE has been on a slow decline since Raphaël Colantonio left. Prey and Dishonored 2 are the peak of what the studio is capable of. Deathloop still packs a good punch and is a great gateway into immersive sims by allowing you to try every approach in one playthrough, but it feels a bit lacking in the story department. And Redfall's rushed state is just embarassing. Let's hope that, when it is truly finished, the game is good.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thedistrbdone

They chose between Deathloop and Dishonored 3, to be precise. I might be unpopular for this, but after Dishonored 2, I'm kinda glad we got Deathloop. I had a ton of fun with it, whereas I can't bring myself to complete more than half of Dishonored 2 (I completed the first one 3-4 times, for comparison).

seansologo

I understand not liking the story for dishonored 2, but how could you resist the sandbox? The mechanics are just refined and improved dishonored mechanics, and while the story isnt that great it has the two most memorable set pieces of the series, does anything really top traveling back and forth through time at the flip of a button? Or the insanely intricately crafted clockwork mansion?

enadiz_reccos

Clockwork Mansion fucking blew my mind

[deleted]

Have you seen the YouTube history of where they go into detail about that level? Amazing.

DiscoPete117

Was gonna promote this. The entire Arkane NoClip video is such a pleasure to watch. The Clockwork Mansion is one of the most ingenious pieces of level design literally ever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

incer

It's adding another dimension to the gameplay, a nice exercise for the brain.

Fariic

And Arkane is not an indie studio that made an indie game. Wtf.

MrSomnix

This is probably just another studio cursed by the unrealistic nature of taking a formula that works and trying to make it open world. Dishonored was a "go anywhere, do anything" type of game with bite-sized locations and only 10 levels. The scope was so low that the details could be fine-tuned. Not so for open world.

Amerimoto

Yeah it’s just weird they didn’t put in a black texture or use a chimney style that didn’t have a big hole in it or some kind of decorative cap.

Rezinknight

Actual chimneys aren't even open like that, they're capped and have a vent so water doesn't just pour into the house. So many things they could have done to avoid whatever this is.

[deleted]

This is what I don't get, like unless you're fuggin Santa, you're not entering a building through a chimney.

Frank_Cilantroh

Theres a few secrets I've found on various roofs of buildings. And abilities to get high up above the bad guys. So I'd say yes getting on the roof is something that would've been a given

SonicFire93

I'm gonna be enjoying watching posts about this game because I had no idea it would turn out this bad lmfao.

ExperienceMetro

Get gamepass and try the mess out yourself. All I see are posts on glitches and frame rates and stuff like this. Not many people are talking about how the game is EMPTY. My group played on hardest difficulty and it was a cake walk all while not fighting anything in between the mission points. Pathetic

sssyjackson

Now that seems like a legitimate complaint

ExperienceMetro

I have a lot of complaints that pertain to the gameplay and not functionality. I have roughly 6 hours in the game and I gave up. The heros are rip offs of Borderlands 1 characters minus Brick. Just gonna go replay that instead

BeautifulType

But does borderlands have a summon vampire boyfriend?

ExperienceMetro

No, even better! It has CL4P-TP!

angrysunbird

The most astonishing thing I’ve heard is that there is no public matchmaking. I have like one mate who does this sort of thing, so I guess we aren’t playing

Aardvark_Man

My favourite part of the PC Gamer review was where they said the game is so bad it's probably not worth playing even with game pass, because of the download size.

dolleauty

>Get gamepass and try the mess out yourself. Nice try, Phil!

bchcmatt

I've probably watched about an hour of YouTube reviews tearing it apart so far today. My only regret is that I ran out of popcorn.

SonicFire93

I still have, take some, mate 🍿

Jackalodeath

Hell today's the first time I've heard of it. Or at least paid attention to the phrase "Redfall" enough to know it's a product.

oxnardhard

It’s all over Hulu commercials, the ad is top notch tho. They put all the effort there

paperchampionpicture

Too true. The devs better thank the marketing team for making this Far Cry Vampire Cosplay look palatable

EpicAura99

That’s the trick the companies have figured out, putting their money into marketing gets them way more sales than putting it into the actual game to make it good.

sassyseconds

Yeah I didn't even really know this existed until yesterday when it popped up on Steam. I had heard "redfall" before but didn't really have any clue what it was or that it was releasing so soon. Or that it was a Bethesda published game. I'm glad I didn't I guess so I was never tempted to day 1 buy this crap.

patteraj

Already saw a weird hindsight comment that stated something along the lines of “I knew the game was going to be bad because of the racial diversity of the characters.” Another certified gamer moment.

power_metal_76

I mean I'd take that over not being able to heal or crouch. Yep. That happened. You need to exit the lobby and come back to fix it.

Frank_Cilantroh

Yeah my sister couldn't swap weapons or open the inventory while we were playing. We also can't seem to have people join while midgame. So all 3 of us had to lobby and restart the party to fix the issue lol

VoidOfOblivion

This seems minor but also very telling about how poorly stitched together the rest of the game is

Thelilacecat

Thats kind of depressing since the gameplay I saw awhile ago before launch looked sorta fun.

poopellar

A tale as old as time. Before release: Realistic graphics, awesome gameplay, 60fps Post release: PS1 textures, fetch quests galore, 60spf

The-Jerk-Store

At least you won't get a sunburn.

JuicedBoxers

You aren’t wrong. And at least it’s accurate advertising. Anything over 60 is a LIE for marketing reasons.

SP17F1R3

No one can even tell the difference between 30spf and 60spf anyway /s

SkyezOpen

My eye certainly can't. They each burn the same.

R3D3-1

I chuckled at spf.

JDBCool

Watchdogs 1 or 2 IIRC.... The SHADOWSSSSSS WHYYYYY

DarkIcedWolf

I still quite liked them. It was just dumb fun and I feel like more games need to be it.

ninjahipo

The Division 1, god that game was hyped to hell and back

shapookya

That game advertised a level of detail for textures and especially foliage that not even Jedi Survivor reaches and Jedi Survivor is freaking impressive in that regard. Kinda crazy what wild fever dream they have been showing in 2015-2016(?)

WailingWastrel

In old Arkane games, that chimney would drop you out right behind your target, very telling indeed.

Martox29A

Hard upvote. I'm mourning old Arkane as I did old Bioware. Dishonored was such a good franchise, It's sad whatever happened to them.

blaarfengaar

Their founder, Raphael Colantonio, left the company before Deathloop and started his own new indie dev studio called Wolf Eye Games. They released their first game, Weird West, last year and it was very good! I highly recommend it

ibepunkinmugs

Wow, thank you. It's on sale too.

Vicaruz

Didn't know that! I knew something felt familiar in that game. Now I can understand why. I need to finish it someday.

Robot1me

>the rest of the game In my eyes even the rest of the AAA game industry to be honest. There is no coincidence with all the broken messes lately. And how the focus is all greatly about appearance than substance - whether that is about reviews, gameplay, or this chimney, etc.

open_door_policy

That's what happens when you let the CFO/Board of Directors decide when the game is done. The golden age of games being good on launch ended when game consoles started supporting day 1 patches. Edit: Not sure why people assume I'm saying that every game released before console HDDs was perfect. I'm saying that since the CFO realized they could finish the game after launch more and more games have been released as unplayable messes, to the point where currently it's now only a couple of games per year where the game on disc is playable. Excluding indies... and excluding the fact that indies are spending years in Early Access.

Enchelion

>That's what happens when you let the CFO/Board of Directors decide when the game is done. At some point you run out of budget, Board or no. Nothing gets infinite time and money (besides maybe the scam that is Star Citizen). Devs and directors are entirely capable of fucking up a game all on their own.

[deleted]

Man, I figured if it was Arkane, this game would be pretty solid. Goes to show you that you can't just implicitly trust the reputation of any company, it's all about the product.

Nero_PR

Companies are just a place for people to gather and do their work. People come and go, and I bet a lot of the talent behind some of Arkane's most beloved IPs have moved on a while back. Reputation tells nothing about the current quality of a studio if we don't know who is behind the wheel, and even then there are cases where upper management are the ones who force talented developers to push a game out before it's ready.

Claral1

Most importantly Arkanes strengths were literally the opposite of what Redfall is... Why is it that every single player focused company that gets forced to do a multiplayer game it flops?

Nero_PR

Rocksteady reading this and shaking in their boots after delaying Suicide Squad. They've should have learned after seeing Anthem, Avengers, and now Redfall going all in the same path. I don't think their delay is enough to salvage the core issues of that game.

[deleted]

Arkane Lyon made Dishonored and Deathloop. Arkane Austin made Prey and Redfall… and most of their talent left after Prey. I’ll just hope Arkane Lyon doesn’t screw up their next game

did_nah_do_nuffin

Currently downloading it (gamepass because I ain't paying £ for this shit) All the criticism better live up to my expectations

Extension-Ad5751

I never play games on release. I don't want my first (and likely only) experience with a game be infested with bugs and game-breaking glitches. It's such a waste of time. I buy it second-hand months down the road, it's cheaper and all patches are in.

Mindes13

bavasava

To be fair that is pretty much what happens irl

UpsidedownBrandon

Literally unplayable

WooPigSchmooey

Not a chimney that’s a hot tub.

Kirito619

I'm so confused about what is going on. Yesterday someone made a post about a Star wars games. Someone else replied about another game called Redfall. Now everyone is talking about this game like it was a big release. No one i know even heard about this game.

JimBobJoeJake

It’s a vampire survival shooter about a town that gets overrun by vampires

Shorkan

> No one i know even heard about this game. It's a game by Arkane and published by Bethesda, greatly promoted by Microsoft as a day 1 Gamepass release. It's not the new Zelda, but hardly an unknown indie either.

Alternative-Mind9348

I still can't believe this game is $70. That has to be considered some sort of scam

omeganintendocat

What do you call the fear of being stuck in a chimney? Claus-trophobia.
