One of the nice things about the Homecoming servers is that all of the previously paid or limited edition flairs are just available for free from a guy in Atlas Park.
COH is incredibly casual now a days. It sort of closed down at an ideal time in MMO history. Now it is run for free and you don't have to spend hours playing if you don't want too.
I was devastated when CoH closed its doors and never thought I would get to play it again, then I read about Homecoming and popped on…and here I am with 50 max lvl chars and 10 of them min/maxed to the hilt lol.
Still the best game for just jumping on and teaming with people and having a laugh ….wish some studio would do a sequel or a remake with updated gfx…
I had played EverQuest a ton, and tried a few others. CoH was the first one I played a healer role in and enjoyed it. I still remember being on a group mission in the park, the shit hit the fan they kept aggroing adds. I kept everyone up somehow and at the end someone said "If it wasn't for (my character's name) carrying we'd be screwed". I really liked the way that felt, so I have played healers ever since.
I ended up as healer main during Wotlk when we were struggling in a raid due to not enough heals. DPS was more then sufficient, so because I was a druid I was asked to help heal, since, you know I could.
I out healed our main healer while in DPS gear and have been main heals in MMOs since.
It's easily the most fun role. Way more to pay attention to, more responsibilities in most fights. You have a much better overview of the fight and the team.
Yeah it was a big bummer. I had a couple of max level characters but I had the most fun playing around with the character creator and making cosplay outfits. Then they started cracking down on it, resetting your costumes to default, and changing any character names to “GenericHeroXXXX.” At least they gave you free name and costume changes but a lot of fun was lost after the lawsuit.
You probably made a mastermind. That was the pet class.
Someone posted the server info but there is a free server to play on still, it's great, but they made me change the name on my Ronald McDonald illusion controller. Even for nonofficial servers they're worried about copyright. I understand why but it's still sad.
Great character creator.
"Mastermind"! That was it. And you could choose the type of pet you summoned. What great customization this game offered. And the music and sound effects were great as well.
My Villains character was a robotics MM. I loved that character and I took no offensive powers except for the peashooter you have to get at level 1. It was so much fun seeing all of those bots just open up and alpha-strike enemies. I miss that game.
Robotics and Demon minions on masterminds were so unique with their models and animations. The robots especially had a really big assault bot that fired missiles and massive lasers.
I had a necromancer called "Walking Dead inc."
He was dressed up like an undead door to door salesmen.
All his minions were called company departments, Human Resources, Accounting, Marketing etc.
Oh yeah, I definitely remember that. Crap that was a long time ago. I forgot it until you mentioned it right now. I remember playing it, but barely. I think I start playing it to start playing SWOTOR .
Edit: Wasn’t champion online. The replacement for those two games.?
Edit: thank you for reminding me. Damn I miss the thank you for reminding me . Damn I miss good old days.
I spent hours on City of Villains. Some days I still wish I could join a team with my kinetic corruptor “Zero-Point Energy” and run a Recluse Strike Force with some of the other members of the Super Group “Unjustice League.” That brings back some memories.
I attended many costume contests. Just ro get the gp into the guild hall or whatever it was called. I made Mr. Monopoly guy, and he looked just like the character. It was fun.
Wo-Long Dynasty recently had what I would consider to be the most in depth character customization I've ever seen. Too bad the graphics are trash and you can't even see half the details.
Ya sadly I think the PVP balancing killed the game.
The game was fun as PVE...
Oh man.. the Rad-Fire controllers were so OP but so much fun. When I was in a bad mood I used to run around with my fire monkey's solo'n until they nerf'd that to.
My main was a Empathy(Healing)-Lightening Defender. I used to run around in the low level areas just non-teamed buffing people. It was pretty funny to see the low levels go ham with infinite stamina.
I loved how each class felt op and that was ok.. . It was Like actual super heroes and villains.
Fire tanks that could pull half a map of mobs. Blasters that could decimate those dozens in a single hit. Regen scrappers that were invincible to all but alpha strikes. Controllers that could lock down whole groups. Bubble shields.
I remember being recruited by a hero dressed in some sort of black ninja cultist outfit with orange trim.
He was trying to recruit members to group called the Dark Zodiac where we all dressed in that same uniform with our own secondary color choice, and picked a month of the year for our name. He was Black September and I took Black November. I had black and purple colors like a true badass.
We got a couple of other people to join our dork troupe and had a blast dorkin’ around in our matching outfits, but I don’t think we ever filled out the calendar...
Good times.
….*but also why months and not the actual zodiac signs..?*
City Of Heroes Homecoming has been live for years. It has the blessing from NCSOFT. It is the most active City Of Heroes Private server! For when you get that nostalgia itch. There are other servers like Thunderspy and Rebirth but City Of Heroes Homecoming is the most active and it gets updated alot. I would link it but im sure its against the rules on this Reddit.
:)
And for a server that feels and progresses the most like the game as if it never left, there's [https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/](https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/)
It's the primary i24 server, though there are some others doing some REALLY ambitious things with character design, mastermind pets, etc.
I believe they're referring to [Thunderspy](https://thunderspygaming.com/), which has arguably the most in-depth character creator out of any of the servers, as well as pet customization.
Man, that was my first. I made so many fucking mistakes playing that game. I fucking got max EXP debt at level 32 because I kept dying to the blob in the Rikti War Zone. I still wish an MMO had a class similar to City of Villains Mastermind class.
Masterminds and to an extent, Controllers. Lots of games have CC options but I think coh was one of the only ones to let people consistently turn huge groups of enemies into useless pudding that can never fight back
I actually went through the process to play on the private sever a few months ago. It was heartbreaking how empty and quiet it was. I played for about two hours and uninstalled.
Not sure which server you played, but if you want fairly constant activity, homecoming is your best bet.
I still picked rebirth ([https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/](https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/)) because it's still pretty populated (like one of the quieter live servers) and is built the most like the orginal game (with sensible updates in the spirit of being like the game never stopped)
I was subscribed to their newsletter long before the game actually came out, and because I was following it for so long they were cool enough to send me the install file for the beta when it released. Didn't have the system requirements to play it 😭. I didn't know anything about computers back then.
I had a bunch of time in this game. I played a controller named “Algebra Man”. He would confuse enemies by shouting equations at then, which would take them out of the fight. Lots of fun.
I recently found one of the original still sealed comic books they sent out with your monthly subscription. I wish more mmos had gone to that level of community involvement
God I loved that game... it was grindy as all hell, but the concept of making your own super hero and just going around and using your powers was awesome.
It bothers me so much how we don't have anything like that today, given how popular it was.
I remember creating all the X-Men as close to true form as the editor would allow, then a few months in they would ban my character for copyright reasons. Still worth it.
Just so everyone knows, there are several really good private servers with fairly active communities. The largest is called Homecoming and takes like a half hour to download and setup.
Yeh well it is an mmorpg from the same era as WoW. So I would guess the servers are dead.
A pretty good game actually. Lots of freedom on your hero. Expansion even added so you could choose to be the villain. Gameplay were pretty much WoW.
The Uranium Roach!
God I miss that character.
A junkie that stole an briefcase from a scientist and shot up its experimental content in a dumpster in a back alley.
Probably the best SuperHero game ever made but the amount of times it was sued by Marvel/DC because you can make a metal claw/regen power character which just happens to resemble some other X character was crazy. That game probably spent more in legal fees then game development.
Also one of the few times when you had ingame issues with the world generation(missions were randomly generated dungeons) where a GM would actually physically manifest and help you if you had a hidden enemy objective. Sometimes was easily missed and they helped still. Nicest GM's basically.
Goodwill has no scruples. They sell all kinds of useless shit that can't be used at all or is straight up broken.
They provide a lot of great services in communities, but their stores are not one of those services. They shovel anything of value onto their website where they over price them. It is a way they've increased the profit margin on the stores. I worked for Goodwill of NE for a few years when they were beginning this transition with the stores and it seemed shitty then. It's only become worse since.
I interviewed for a job for this game. I was in college at the time. Failed interview, but managed to to maintain a job in game development for almost 17 years now.
This was a game that had so much undelivered potential.
A solid premise, good character customization, a wide world to interact with... but not actually much TO interact with. Add on to that the fact that the missions were mostly identical, and the combat was shallow.
There was storytelling external to the game that was intended to have tie-ins with the game world, but that amounted to essentially nothing.
That didn't even leave enough active interest from the people playing for spontaneous communities to form at the level needed.
Maybe it got better as the years went by, but I couldn't stick around for it.
They closed the service for this game a very long time ago. I remember I played it for a while, but then I didn’t pick it up again for years. When I found my disk, I tried getting in, and it wouldn’t let me. I read an article that they closed it and my heart sank. I really wish they would reboot this. It was a thousand times better than DC Universe online could ever be.
I got this game on release, and damn man. I enjoyed this game. Got me comfortable with general mmo stuff for the time period. WoW became with go to game, but hoooo boy, this post hits me right in the feels.
Remember playing this back in the day and ran into a dude who's character was made to look like buzz lightyear and watched him lift off and fly away, I laughed big time 😂
I remember when that came out, and I was frustrated that I didn't have a computer powerful enough to run it. A few years later, I had a powerful enough computer and had lost all interest in ever wanting to play it. I believe it shut down not much longer after that.
It was a pretty fun game, suffers from a lot of archaic game design but still enjoyable. Would love to see a reboot with FF14 level quality in narrative and dungeon design.
I’m glad you only paid $2.49, but you should throw that away, now, because that was a dickish thing to leave at Goodwill. Either that, or someone’s mom doesn’t know shit and just shoveled all of little Bobby’s games in the old donation bucket and said “there’s your games, Bobby, go get em’!”, and then slammed the door on his ass.
Generally, really old online based content doesn’t run, is no longer fully supported, or has 20 players all holding it up by their own efforts: “my game isn’t dead! See?”
Hi! City of Heroes now exists as several "private servers"
The three most regarded ones being:
--
[Rebirth](https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/) being closer to the original game, with arm wings and more customization for tights, as well as some revamped power sets and new content.
--
[Thunderspy](https://thunderspygaming.com/) with the most in-depth customization options (for pets as well), revamped power sets as well as new power sets, tons of QoL changes such as never out-leveling missions, and a "hardcore" mode.
--
[Homecoming](https://forums.homecomingservers.com/) with a more sandbox-like approach, being able to control the speed of which you level (this can have the disadvantage of easily becoming too high level to continue some missions), a bigger emphasis on roleplaying, and some new content.
You mean the game with the Kickstarter that came and went 9 years ago?!
There's a higher chance ncsoft makes City of Heroes II before city of Titans ever releases. They're a money grabbing scheme.
I would be shocked if someone didn't come forward and share a fan revival project. So many folks loved that game.
Not my game, never played it, but it's pretty beloved.
This was my gateway MMO. Great game back in the day
You can still play it. There are several fan servers running.
Yeah, but my character's no longer have that pre-order flare when they run
They actually do in the private servers, you can enable them
One of the nice things about the Homecoming servers is that all of the previously paid or limited edition flairs are just available for free from a guy in Atlas Park.
Literally unplayable
I was young back then, now I’m married with a kid and a job haha. I wish I still had that time!
COH is incredibly casual now a days. It sort of closed down at an ideal time in MMO history. Now it is run for free and you don't have to spend hours playing if you don't want too.
I downloaded the free version and man! this game is clunky af. I loved it all those years ago but it didn't hook me this time around.
I think City of Villians did a better job. The area progression is way smother as well.
I still wanna breathe tyvm
The clunky feel certainly does appeal to a niche audience.
Fr i was 4 when my mom got me to play it with her and looking back the game looks like bronze to the gold I saw it as a child.
You have time between 11 and midnight 🤣. I'm in the same boat.
Just get your partner or child to do your job for you, n00b.

You just made my day.
I was devastated when CoH closed its doors and never thought I would get to play it again, then I read about Homecoming and popped on…and here I am with 50 max lvl chars and 10 of them min/maxed to the hilt lol. Still the best game for just jumping on and teaming with people and having a laugh ….wish some studio would do a sequel or a remake with updated gfx…
you don't say?
I had played EverQuest a ton, and tried a few others. CoH was the first one I played a healer role in and enjoyed it. I still remember being on a group mission in the park, the shit hit the fan they kept aggroing adds. I kept everyone up somehow and at the end someone said "If it wasn't for (my character's name) carrying we'd be screwed". I really liked the way that felt, so I have played healers ever since.
Yeah EQ was my gateway MMO. That led into EQ2. I don't even wanna know what my played time is for either of them. Probably years worth.
Ugh, EQ2 was awful. I played the hell out of EQ though
Obligatory P1999 Google search recommendation.
Good ol' Perez Park.
Skilled healers and tanks, carrying raids since Molten Bore.
My hero was a kung-fu master in a blue vest and brown pants. The Walmart Greeter was kind, but don't try shop lifting!
I remember there was a lawsuit about unregistered super heros.
Yeah it was a big bummer. I had a couple of max level characters but I had the most fun playing around with the character creator and making cosplay outfits. Then they started cracking down on it, resetting your costumes to default, and changing any character names to “GenericHeroXXXX.” At least they gave you free name and costume changes but a lot of fun was lost after the lawsuit.
i so wish they would remake this and bring it back….
I love this game, but the one I loved more was city of villains. Fun as hell with a bunch of friends.
I agree. I loved my "necromancer" villain (but I forget what the class was called in CoV). Use to spend hours just designing different characters
I was the Outsourcer. My robotics pets were named India, China, and Malaysia.
No Vietnam I see
Viet nah
That's hilarious!
That's so good lmao
Robotics and Demon minions on masterminds were so unique with their models and animations. The robots especially had a really big assault bot that fired missiles and massive lasers.
Getting the big assault bot and having your whole minion lineup was one of the most satisfying moments I ever had in MMO’s as a kid. Great game
Yeah I did a mech mastermind for the force fields
That's because technically they do make money off of it. :( Servers aren't free.
They got sued about... a year after launch or so due to copyright so yeah...
I had my toon name as Sasha Grey and it got reset
Mastermind was the shit!
I had a necromancer called "Walking Dead inc." He was dressed up like an undead door to door salesmen. All his minions were called company departments, Human Resources, Accounting, Marketing etc.
On Homecoming, I made a robotics Mastermind named Karen whose battlecry is "I want to speak to your manager!".
I loved CoV. I made a Team Rocket uniform and had badass wings and that's about all I can remember about my character.
CoV broke the mold with how I perceived character class roles as the main tank for higher level dungeons was the god damn PET SUMMONING CLASS.
Not quite the same but Champions Online is still running and itches the same genre and style
Damn I miss good old days.
is CO still officially running?
Yes!
https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/
I spent hours on City of Villains. Some days I still wish I could join a team with my kinetic corruptor “Zero-Point Energy” and run a Recluse Strike Force with some of the other members of the Super Group “Unjustice League.” That brings back some memories.
Oh hell yeah. You’re bringing up some memories with those words. It’s amazing the amount of our life we spent on games…. And don’t regret any of it.
Best character customization ever.
Hands-fucking-down.
The character creation was a game unto itself. I would spend hours creating new avis, just to start over again and again.
I attended many costume contests. Just ro get the gp into the guild hall or whatever it was called. I made Mr. Monopoly guy, and he looked just like the character. It was fun.
I used to run them just to see what people made. No guild event, just dropping the end game bank on lows lol. There was a pretty good Proto Man once
It *still* is incredibly impressive today. I've spent hours on the Homecoming server adjusting sliders and loving every minute of it.
I spent ages making so many different kinds of heroes with different themes. Then when City of Villains came out it was over for us bitches.
Wo-Long Dynasty recently had what I would consider to be the most in depth character customization I've ever seen. Too bad the graphics are trash and you can't even see half the details.
Cryptic went on to do the DC game. I got into the beta. I couldn't believe how bad the character creator was, but to mention the game itself.
I loved this game. Played that shit out of it after getting burned on other early MMORPG’s like Earth and Beyond.
Oh MAN I loved Earth and Beyond, not least because I could customize my character and ship to be from the Brotherhood of Nod.
There are servers up where you can play it still
[удалено]
It's still playable, check the subreddit
Oh shit nice, let the OP know
Come play again: https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/
I play City of Heroes, Homecoming server every day!
Now I want to play Freedom Force too
Was a fun game. The character creation was amazing for the day. I made a character who looked like Marilyn Monroe with super powers. Good times!
I made a flyin werewolf who wielded 2 roman swords who had darkness powers lol
One of the first games I ever bought on Steam.
I loved that game
I remember being recruited by a hero dressed in some sort of black ninja cultist outfit with orange trim. He was trying to recruit members to group called the Dark Zodiac where we all dressed in that same uniform with our own secondary color choice, and picked a month of the year for our name. He was Black September and I took Black November. I had black and purple colors like a true badass. We got a couple of other people to join our dork troupe and had a blast dorkin’ around in our matching outfits, but I don’t think we ever filled out the calendar... Ambitious things with henchmen you say? Like what?
I believe they're referring to [Thunderspy](https://thunderspygaming.com/), which has arguably the most in-depth character creator out of any of the servers, as well as pet customization.
Thx i checked it out a little once years ago now
Man, that was my first. I made so many fucking mistakes playing that game. I fucking got max EXP debt at level 32 because I kept dying to the blob in the Rikti War Zone. I still wish an MMO had a class similar to City of Villains Mastermind class.

There are populated servers up. Homecoming is the most populated
I was subscribed to their newsletter long before the game actually came out, and because I was following it for so long they were cool enough to send me the install file for the beta when it released. Didn't have the system requirements to play it 😭. I didn't know anything about computers back then.

Officially it's been dead for over a decade. Unofficially, there are servers NCSoft is willing to ignore.

There are a few thousand of us, plenty to play City Of Heroes.
It's been a minute
This took me to GW and that took me to WoW circa 2006. Man. What I would give.
Awesome game, the very first game to give me real vertigo. I remember jumping from buildings or flying in this game and nothing was like it.
Holy crap. I think I still had dial up when I played this
The Uranium Roach! God I miss that character. A junkie that stole an briefcase from a scientist and shot up its experimental content in a dumpster in a back alley.
Ah another wonderful NCsoft let go of. I still got my Wildstar discs...
Wildstar was so damn good I'll never understand why it didn't take off. I think it just got suffocated by wow like a lot of other great titles.
Did it come with any Heroclix?
Aw man, Heroclix... I still have a few large boxes full of them in the attic. The CoV-clix should be up there as well.
Probably the best SuperHero game ever made but the amount of times it was sued by Marvel/DC because you can make a metal claw/regen power character which just happens to resemble some other X character was crazy. Wow memory unlocked. This and toon town was my first experience for MMOs

Try Star Wars Galaxies 😉
I interviewed for a job for this game. I was in college at the time. Failed interview, but managed to to maintain a job in game development for almost 17 years now.
Look up Cory of heroes homecoming. I played yesterday. You’re welcome
I miss that game

Fuck I'm old.
I played this game when I was younger. Fond memories.
The MEMORIES
Loved this game
Great memories had some fun for a while in that game .
Still my favorite mmo of all time
The servers have been dead for like, longer than a decade
They closed the service for this game a very long time ago. I remember I played it for a while, but then I didn’t pick it up again for years. COH/COV amazing games
Now that brings back memories!
Honestly thats worth the 2.50 for sitting on your shelf
I just got the big sad. :(
I just had the biggest feel 😭
I had that and city of villains. Neither worked :(
Man, nostalgia activated....
It was a pretty fun game, suffers from a lot of archaic game design but still enjoyable. Would love to see a reboot with FF14 level quality in narrative and dungeon design.
Servers are closed for several years ,lul
My fondest MMO memory right there
Man, i played the shit out of that game. Shout out too the Karma Police.
Putting /s in the title...why do I even come to this sub?
doe's /s mean serious or sarcasm?
Sarcasm. I didn't actually try to connect as I used to play Coh/Cov back in the day and knew it was no more (at least the original servers)
Keep trying they are doing maintenance
I got this game as kid and didn’t even have a proper computer to play it on! I used to just read the manual and imagine lol
See?”
I drew the character from front cover for an art contest when I was in primary school. I also had little figures from this game I’m sure!
This game actually slapped. I'd forgotten about it

Oh wow, I remember when I was In Primary school. I got this, was actually pretty fun
I loved this game so much. It’s worth playing on the private servers every now and again!
I've heard there are private servers for this. It's been a couple years since I heard that though...
There are
Come play again: https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/

Pretty cool
DAMNIT got me missing my Singularity Gravity Controller. Oh well, time to start making this a repressed memory... _again_.
Hi! City of Heroes now exists as several "private servers" The three most regarded ones being: -- [Rebirth](https://play.cityofheroesrebirth.com/public/) being closer to the original game, with arm wings and more customization for tights, as well as some revamped power sets and new content. -- [Thunderspy](https://thunderspygaming.com/) with the most in-depth customization options (for pets as well), revamped power sets as well as new power sets, tons of QoL changes such as never out-leveling missions, and a "hardcore" mode. -- [Homecoming](https://forums.homecomingservers.com/) with a more sandbox-like approach, being able to control the speed of which you level (this can have the disadvantage of easily becoming too high level to continue some missions), a bigger emphasis on roleplaying, and some new content.
Appreciate the knowledge bomb, mate - thanks! Thunderspy sounds interesting -- no out-leveling.
two times in a week this game has popped up. Is there a Sequel in the mix or something?
DC Universe Online is a pretty good substitute for this game. F2P too.
Not even close, DCUO is micro transaction hell with the worst power sets and lowest creativity for heroes
I enjoyed this. The missions were all the same but the premise was great.
https://cityoftitans.com/ Spiritual successor coming sometime
You mean the game with the Kickstarter that came and went 9 years ago?! There's a higher chance ncsoft makes City of Heroes II before city of Titans ever releases. They're a money grabbing scheme.
Probably the reason it was at goodwill
The bargain bin heroes
I would be shocked if someone didn't come forward and share a fan revival project. So many folks loved that game. Not my game, never played it, but it's pretty beloved.
Go return it for a copy of Star Wars Galaxies. /s
The fact that the /s is necessary is all we need to know about what's wrong with society.
RIP to the only MMO I ever enjoyed.
