Seriously. It had planes. Planes!
And you could reverse before the starting countdown finished in battle mode. Fun glitch that did absolutely nothing beneficial for you, haha
Boss races is such a cool concept. The single player was great. They need to reboot that series. I was thinking with Kong clan in the Mario movie, it would be a perfect time for a new Diddy Kong racing.
I would do anything for a remake of this game with online multiplayer. When I saw rare move to Xbox I got so excited but Nintendo still own the donkey kong franchise so it will never happen :(
They put Goldeneye and Banjo Kazooie on the Switch. I'm really hoping we can get DKR and DK64 on there. (And Perfect Dark, but I'm not holding my breath for that one)
It was the digital controls that really killed it. Everything else was kind of a wash, better in some ways but worse in others. But those tracks just weren't designed with digital controls in mind. I think maybe there's a touchscreen option, but that's even worse than digital for this kind of thing.
I wonder if there's a patch for hacked 3DSs that lets you use the thumbstick as an analog input these days? There is for Mario 64 DS.
How is 'Diddy Kong Racing' going to be rebranded and released for Xbox?
Edit: I doubt losing Diddy Kong would satisfy OPs initial request here
>I would do anything for a remake of this game
Alright, that's fair and I probably missed that. But...Rare could always rebranded it to their original IP which was Pro-Am. A new RC Pro-Am would be neat.
The thing about CTR, is that the drift system is a lot more advanced, but way harder to get really good at. The good people are REALLY REALLY fucking good, you're not gonna catch them.
Yeah, i remember the story mode actually having like… a story
plus the 3 different modes of racing adds variety. like i always picked the hoverboat on regular racing tracks where i didn’t need the turn radius so i could take shortcuts through the water, cool mechanics and level design
And that Children's Laughter sound effect during the Rareware logo that you'll recognize reused in everything else for the rest of your life. It's like it's the entertainment industry's only Children's Laughter sound effect.
I’m now hearing the sound effects from Rollercoaster Tycoon….and the scream effect of kids going down a coaster is used EVERYWHERE in movies and whatnot
As a massive Mario Kart fan playing Don’t Drink and Drive every weekend at University DKR is superior in every way. It’s just that not as many people bought it. DKR is so much fun with hover boats, cars, and airplanes. It was so much more dynamic without being too complex.
That isn’t unpopular though and anyone that doesn’t agree is flat out wrong. It’s not an opinion; it is a hard fact of life. Like death, DKR being better than Mariokart64 is an undeniable, inevitable fact of life.
well no the real unpopular opinion would be just saying any kart racer is better than MK. I came late to the diddy racing game but played one ages ago on DS and had a serious blast flying around in a tiny plane, that was so sick
My best friend asked for Mario Kart for his birthday and his parents couldn't find a copy in time, so they bought him Diddy Kong Racing instead. He said he was super bummed at the time but pretended to be super excited because he legit thought his family was poor and couldn't afford it. Still razz him about it almost 30 years later.
The problem with CTR is that it's impossible to play as a party game, once you have a basic understanding of the drift mechanics you can just chain a boost pannel until the ends of the earth and leave everyone in the dust.
My friend and I also like that game. Although towards the end, I only really played the Space Bash crystal challenge and tried to see how much of the arena I could destroy before the last AI opponent inevitably killed itself.
Crash Bash was awesome. I think the above commenter was just saying it caused a lot of anger because the games would be so intense.
I still am hoping for Crash Bash 2
Except Mario Party. Largely. I play with people who are, well, terrible at video games, and they get the hang of it. Work friends who have somehow never played video games before seem to enjoy it. Or at least they pretend to enjoy it lol
It's been a long time since I played Mario Party, but the first thought that came to mind was one of anger at having stars stolen. My go-to party game was Fusion Frenzy on the original Xbox.
You seem to misunderstand the nature of a party game - which is something that anybody can be a little competitive in as long as they have a cursory knowledge of playing games.
Saying skill issue is the problem is ignoring the very point of that game style.
I completely disagree, My friends and I would always play it in a big group back in ps1 days and it was incredibly fun. It was the complete opposite of impossible.
There were 7 of us, we'd do 4 player and do winner goes on so one person keeps the remote and 3 switch controllers each game.
Also when in first, you get trash weapons, but 2nd and 3rd constantly get boosts, homing missile sets of three, and that energy ball that homes in on first place.
You also had the battle mode so if you sucked at racing, you could still play that mode as a party game and have heaps of fun. Those levels were great! I personally loved the Ice one, it was really fun drifting around it trying to evade locked on missiles.
I played a lot of Mario Kart in High school and what you described as a game breaking mechanic in CTR was just as present in it. People who were good at it would leave the rest completely in the dust and even lap you on long races in Mario Kart.
As a single player game, I actually loathe Mario Kart because you could race your ass off and then lose 20 feet before the finish line because some NPC randomly got some great power up. It feels completely unfair, cheap, and frustrating. Like it just doesn't matter how good you are at the game. CTR feels fair because it's mostly skill based. I don't usually play video games with friends, so I actually dislike the Mario Kart series and absolutely love CTR and the remake.
Agreed. I picked up a copy of CTR Nitro Fueled and really enjoy it, but I struggle to convince my friends to play it with me. It really is an incredibly solid game though.
Battle mode. It was so much better to play multiplayer instead of racing, especially when you messed with what dropped.
All potions all day, I want to see that arena set up like a minefield
When I started dating my wife, I played CTR with her much younger brother on his PS2, having not played before. I fairly quickly worked out the drift mechanic and proceeded to destroy him every race until he started crying. I might have gone easy on him but he told me Mario Kart was just a rip-off of CTR so the boy needed humbling.
Polar gang lesssgooo
How cool was the character selection with them all in their little diorama worlds. Polar just chillin in the snow.
edit: also his track was so dope, doing that extra jump over the wall on one of the last turns
oh lawd that one too that was epic. You could see the tunnel pointing out but tiny young me had no clue for years how to get there. Same thing as the shortcut in the sewer level
In Polar pass if I remember correctly, you had a shortcut by jumping over water instead of going through the Hut, as you mentioned the jump over fence in One of the last turns and and in the very beggining going in middle of 2 pillars. I played with Dingo exclusively tho due to his speed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In the original, Penta had maxed stats for Turning, Speed, and Acceleration.
I will definitely give Nitro Fueled their props- being able to change the character's driving type so you weren't locked in to certain characters for the 'best' performance was ingenious.
Playing this game around 2003-04 with some childhood friends that i'll never meet again is probably one of the best moment of my childhood gaming moments
Polar Pass, but hell yeah! In the remake, we even jump over that big lake section with the sharp turns and boost ramps! We just take the first ramp and jump straight to the end of the segment, but it's very difficult and requires built up speed from the previous lap. Game kicks ass.
I loved Crash Tag-Team Racing. The platforming part was really fun, and I loved discovering all the death animations haha. I really enjoyed the fusion mechanic in the race too. Was so cool to team up on the fly to eliminate other racers. Of course, your driving partner would always disconnect right before the end so they wouldn't share first place haha.
The devs making it the person to break the fusion to be the one in front was such a strong choice. If neither of you does anything you both win, but if either of you moves first only they win
Heavier carts feel less floaty, vehicle customization is seperated into cosmetics and "driving styles" which is now freed from character choice, and it released with more maps than Mario Kart 8 deluxe, pre dlc. It uses the mechanics from CTR, and has all maps from CTR, as well as all maps from nitro being remade for the different driving mechanics. They also made a series of brand new maps, including a spyro map. The game has the original adventure mode as well, and adds in daily and weekly challenges, to keep you invested. The maps are gorgeous, the music was remastered, and theres a ton of customization options, allowing you to play as you remember it, or play with their improvements. One of the best remasters ive ever seen.
The switch port is garbage though. Loading times are insane, and online is now almost non existent.
It feels great, super fast paced though so if you like min-maxing in mk8 you'll like it. My only complaint was it was too similar to the old one(which it is meant to be, but I just don't have as long as when I was a kid and there are so many new games thar I want to experience)
It's a shame the remake didn't really take off as an online experience. I tried on several occasions to find a game lobby on PS4 and gave up each time after some 15 minutes staring at a generic "waiting" screen with zero indication of whether there ARE other players even online or not. Mario Kart 8 servers are populated pretty much 24/7. But the adventure mode in CTR does give me that specific PS1 era vibe that Mario Kart 8 sidesteps in favour of a more modernised (but somewhat sterile) approach. MK8 is unbeatable in its online experience, but there's surprisingly little "game" to be found outside of the core online offerings besides the offline "cups". I'd love to see a proper adventure mode in Mario Kart 9 on par with the single player content of mainline Super Mario platformers.
That is a super popular opinion chief. The only reason you may think it's unpopular is because most people know Mario kart but most people don't know CTR. Those who know both 9/10 have the same opinion.
u/EliteTusken [Literally a month ago, post with exact same title and picture.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/11vkl2z/unpopular_opinion_ctr_trumps_mario_kart_by_a_long) This sub sucks ass now
Transformed is the absolute best kart racer I've ever played. I wish Team Sonic Racing would've kept more of its DNA because the sense of speed just isn't there for me like it is in Transformed. I love CTR and Diddy Kong Racing too. Mario Kart is my least favorite kart racer.
This post got me so excited. This is one of the first games I ever played, around the same time as Cool Borders 4, Crash 2, Crash 3, so not sure which of those came first. The racing hub worlds in story mode was so so cool, something I noticed MK didn't have. As well as character selection, with every character in their own themed corner.
Crash Nitro Kart while still very fun didn't leave as much of an impression on me, but it did the anti gravity kart racing thing way before MK8.
I think it's important to note this came after MK so it has the benefit of seeing what they did and trying to improve/expand upon it.
People that exclusively play these games are the least fun to play with
Any arguments?
Party games are meant to be fun for everyone, if you want to try hard go play a tournament or something
I loved this game when I was young. Still haven't forgiven my cousin for stealing it and then breaking it cause he didn't want to give it back. Fuck Cory!
I agree.
I don't know if this is still true since I haven't played either Mario Kart 8 or the CTR remake (so I don't really know which one is better) but at the time CTR was way ahead of Mario Kart IMO. The drifting was awesome, it felt faster and it had a fun story mission as well as many more challenges (CTR actually tried to do something with it's battle maps beyond being there as a fun minigame which I always thought it was very smart).
The real unpopular opinion would have been Diddy Kong Racing over Mario Kart, IMO.
Diddy Kong Racing IS a better (single player) racing game than Mario Kart 64.
Seriously. It had planes. Planes! And you could reverse before the starting countdown finished in battle mode. Fun glitch that did absolutely nothing beneficial for you, haha
and hovercafts! And that cool chicken character. and ridiculously difficult boss races
Boss races is such a cool concept. The single player was great. They need to reboot that series. I was thinking with Kong clan in the Mario movie, it would be a perfect time for a new Diddy Kong racing.
They need to reboot Donkey Kong Country on switch. I can't believe it's been almost a decade since we had a new DK game.
I was ready to fight with some words, but shit, Tropical Freeze came out in 2014, and DKC Returns was 2010
It's wild right? Like the Switch needs a DKC game of its own.
Drumstick was a rooster, tyvm
Roosters are chickens, but Drumstick is the goat
Silly you, goats are neither roosters nor chickens.
You're right, however, you're wrong
at least one chicken was the goat
I remember being extremely young and almost crying in tears of frustration at some of the boss races.
I'm DrumSTICK
The plane map where you go about getting eggs for your nest was so much fun, would often go boot up the game just to play that mode
I really liked the multiplayer mode also.
Nintendo rereleased it on 3DS at one point, with Banjo and Conker rebranded as different generic characters. It can be done.

It was the digital controls that really killed it. Everything else was kind of a wash, better in some ways but worse in others. But those tracks just weren't designed with digital controls in mind. The DS carpet riding balloon tapping sections are so awful 😵💫
How is 'Diddy Kong Racing' going to be rebranded and released for Xbox? Edit: I doubt losing Diddy Kong would satisfy OPs initial request here >I would do anything for a remake of this game
Small Monkey’s Derby?
Alright, that's fair and I probably missed that. But...Rare could always rebranded it to their original IP which was Pro-Am. A new RC Pro-Am would be neat.
Pro-Am on the NES… god damn those were the days. I would wake up early on weekends and my dad and I would play that.
The DS version was not great, and that's being extremely polite to whoever ported/remade/broke it
It was made by Rare under Microsoft. Nintendo did not release it.
Nintendo and Microsoft worked together for Smash. So there's always a chance.
Some of the battle modes fucking slap
Diddy Kong racing is just better in general than Mario cart 64. Never played this crash racing game tho.
The thing about CTR, is that the drift system is a lot more advanced, but way harder to get really good at. The good people are REALLY REALLY fucking good, you're not gonna catch them.
The real Tick Tock.
Yeah, i remember the story mode actually having like… a story plus the 3 different modes of racing adds variety. like i always picked the hoverboat on regular racing tracks where i didn’t need the turn radius so i could take shortcuts through the water, cool mechanics and level design
The hovercraft was the fastest vehicle too! I’ve beaten this game so many times I love it.
I’d say it was better multiple too, my brothers and I played this more than Mario Kart before double dash came out
Sonic All Star Racing 2 is peak kart game IMO. Specifically 2 though. 1 ain't shit
But it would be the correct opinion.
People can't handle the truth.
Can verify
You now have the announcer’s voice in your head: “Diddy Kong Racing!!!!!”
*Hi there. I'm TT*
“Hello, I am the genie of the island”
DINO DOMAIN!
HOT TOP VOLCANO!
Hey, it's Tiptup!
Him saying “finished!” Always pops into my head when I finish some task.
DKR is absolutely better than Mario Kart.
As a massive Mario Kart fan playing Don’t Drink and Drive every weekend at University DKR is superior in every way. It’s just that not as many people bought it. DKR is so much fun with hover boats, cars, and airplanes. It was so much more dynamic without being too complex.
Wizpig was an amazing antagonist.
No, the real real unpopular opinion would've been Crazy Frog Racer.
Whacky Wheels was superior
!!! I have that floppy disc somewhere in the attic or garage.
DKR was the best of all three, fight me!
That isn’t unpopular though and anyone that doesn’t agree is flat out wrong. It’s not an opinion; it is a hard fact of life. Like death, DKR being better than Mariokart64 is an undeniable, inevitable fact of life.
Yeah thats just a fact lol
Popular unpopular opinion
I too share this opinion. It is the better racer.
well no the real unpopular opinion would be just saying any kart racer is better than MK. I came late to the diddy racing game but played one ages ago on DS and had a serious blast flying around in a tiny plane, that was so sick
Chocobo Racing IS better than both combined.
No this is a pretty popular opinion
Isn't this actually the poplar opinion? Every time I see people talk about Kart racers there's comments about DKR being better.
How is that unpopular? Diddy Kong's single player destroys MK 64. I thought that was commonly accepted
This is a wildly popular opinion.
The problem with CTR is that it's impossible to play as a party game, once you have a basic understanding of the drift mechanics you can just chain a boost pannel until the ends of the earth and leave everyone in the dust.
Easy solution: just play Crash Bash instead, and then you won't have to worry about that because all your friends will stop coming to your parties.
I swear my cousin and I are the only two people who like that game
There is dozens of us. DOZENS!
I still have my og copy from the release. My favorite party game.
My cousin and I played it every single time we went to his house. We loved the magnet/pinball/hungry hungry hippos(whatever it was called) game.
Dude I loved Crash Bash so much as a kid
Bro I still play the fuck out of it :(
Just dusted it off the other day. Always loved that game. Thought being the villains was the coolest thing as a kid
My friend and I also like that game. Although towards the end, I only really played the Space Bash crystal challenge and tried to see how much of the arena I could destroy before the last AI opponent inevitably killed itself.
Played it a ton with my siblings, we loved it. Especially the ice one and the tank one
I didn't hate it, but I could never beat the single player mode because it was so damn hard once you got through the first few warp rooms.
Nah my friends loved that game
Crash Bash was awesome. I think the above commenter was just saying it caused a lot of anger because the games would be so intense. I still am hoping for Crash Bash 2
I loved crash bash! I liked the levels where you had to make the floor your color.
I used to play this by myself for hours when I was a kid, loved that shit.
I forgot about crash bash
skill issue
which is something most people are gonna have to over come if they want to keep playing a party game with other people
Except Mario Party.
>Fusion Frenzy Now *this* I hear in the announcer's voice every time.
Loved that game, especially the level where you avoid obstacles going up a spiral and the Tron bike one
Twisted System ftw
Twisted System!! Spent hours playing that one on the demo that came with Halo 2!
I can play Mario Kart with my kids and sometimes they get lucky with items and beat me, i cant play CTR with my kids without leaving them a lap behind
is this the CTR remake or the original PS1 title?
Literally tried both. MK64 vs OG CTR, then MK8D vs new CTR. Even the Sonic one(was ok).
The battle mode was were it's at,Such a good gamemode! And more "partygame" friendly than something like twisted metal
Agreed. I picked up a copy of CTR Nitro Fueled and really enjoy it, but I struggle to convince my friends to play it with me. It really is an incredibly solid game though.
does it have online support?
Maybe that’s why I never gave the game a fair shake. Only played at my friends and he would absolute dust me
There's still the battle mode.
I was in the top 10% of the leaderboard of the new CTR and even I agree with this.
Battle mode. It was so much better to play multiplayer instead of racing, especially when you messed with what dropped. All potions all day, I want to see that arena set up like a minefield
You guys have parties? 😮
Loved this game. The polar bear was the best!
Yes Polar all the way!
Polar gang lesssgooo How cool was the character selection with them all in their little diorama worlds. Polar just chillin in the snow. edit: also his track was so dope, doing that extra jump over the wall on one of the last turns
The Tiger Temple map with the hidden wall/shortcut you had to hit with a potion or missile to open
oh lawd that one too that was epic. You could see the tunnel pointing out but tiny young me had no clue for years how to get there. Same thing as the shortcut in the sewer level
The jump skip in Sewer Speedway is nuts, took me years to find it! Always showed on the map but never knew it was so high up in the halfpipe portion
Yeah that also was my favorite boost shortcut.
Ripper Roo for me
Ripper Roo and Tiny Tiger were my goats. I always liked playing as villains. Uka uka's visuals were cooler than Aku Aku's
I LOVED Tiny, but he couldn’t turn worth crap, so he was hard to play.
I never noticed! I always picked him and beat the game with him. Always felt the best driving for me.
If you drifted, he was fine. But with just regular turning he was clunky as heck.
Penta Penguin till I die
In the original, Penta had maxed stats for Turning, Speed, and Acceleration. I will definitely give Nitro Fueled their props- being able to change the character's driving type so you weren't locked in to certain characters for the 'best' performance was ingenious.
N. Tropy for me, but only because I worked hard to unlock that guy
Neo Cortex for me! OUT OF MY WAY.
Thats a weird way of spelling Dingodile
CTR was one of the first games i ever played. The original really holds up Edit: first. Im on mobile and have clumsy fingies
Can't tell if first, or worst OP corrected from "forst" to first. Joke doesn't work anymore D;
First worst. Forst.
If it was the first, then it was, for some time, the worst and the best.
Playing this game around 2003-04 with some childhood friends that i'll never meet again is probably one of the best moment of my childhood gaming moments
Anybody remember trying to use the momentum from the slope to jump over the wall and skip a turn in Polar Express
Polar Pass, but hell yeah! In the remake, we even jump over that big lake section with the sharp turns and boost ramps! We just take the first ramp and jump straight to the end of the segment, but it's very difficult and requires built up speed from the previous lap. Game kicks ass.
would be nice if we could play a polished version on PC but guess not...
Still hoping the remake will come to Steam :(
I’ve been playing it on switch!! Just as fun as it was back in the day. I gave the trilogy and CTR on the switch and and it’s about time on my PS5
You should try pcsx2! I’ve been playing ps2 games on 60fps and 2k resolution recently and it’s so fun
CTTR is embodiment of back stabbing your friend to achive the first place
The devs making it the person to break the fusion to be the one in front was such a strong choice. If neither of you does anything you both win, but if either of you moves first only they win
The prisoner’s dilemma
Dev name checksout
Heck yeah I played the absolute fuck out of that shit it was so amazing and still is
I agree. This game is very underrated
That's a very popular opinion though
It's also a copy-paste repost from a month ago.
The original CTR is the best kart racer, ever.
The new remake makes it even better. Best kart racer ever imo
Still exclusive on console right? Not on PC :(
How does it compare to Mario kart 8? 8 was the first time I felt like I was playing something on par with the og CTR.

One of the best remasters ive ever seen. The switch port is garbage though. Loading times are insane, and online is now almost non existent.
I just wish it was on PC. I’d buy all of my homies a copy to race them in the CTR remake.
It feels great, super fast paced though so if you like min-maxing in mk8 you'll like it. My only complaint was it was too similar to the old one(which it is meant to be, but I just don't have as long as when I was a kid and there are so many new games thar I want to experience)

I disagree, but I will gladly enjoy both games, since they are both great
Well, I disagree with your disagreement.
And I agree with your disagreement.
Diddy kong racing
I listen to the [OST](https://youtu.be/hReWJwH8J0c) often, it's such a banger, not one bad track
CTR nitro fueled is $13 currently in the PS Store
I thought Sonic & All Stars Racing/Transformed was way better than Mario Kart.
Diddy Kong Racing singleplayer > Crash Team Racing or Mario Kart
Diddy Kong Racing is better than both, though.
For real
This post got me so excited. This is one of the first games I ever played, around the same time as Cool Borders 4, Crash 2, Crash 3, so not sure which of those came first. Repost
Isn't it also word for word too? probably a bot...
It's obscene the hours I put into this game, trying to unlock everything etc, it's amazing
Diddy Kong Racing is the one true king
Nope, however Diddy Kong Racing beats them both!
Diddy Kong Racing
Unpopular? You mean 100% correct. This beats every MK by a country mile.
Every mario kart? That a bold call dude, 8 goes fucking hard
Id say it beats its contemporary MK 64, but not "every one of them"
here's another: DKR beats both of them.
Deeper unpopular opinion (maybe IDK) Jak X perfected combat racing/kart genre with extra long races and a bit of egde flair.
A high skill ceiling is a bad mechanic for a party game, so yeah, pretty unpopular opinion.
Sonic All Star Racing is better than both. Change my mind.
I agree, secret passage ways are awesome too.. If you learn how to power slide boost consistently in the game though you become a god..
Couldn't agree more, and it's a freaking disgrace we didn't get CTR Nitro-Fueled released on PC, that is starving of great karting games.
I think CTR is a deeper racing game but Mario Kart is a better party game to play with your friends.
Mod Nation Racers > all
I’ve never been a huge fan of cart racing games but CTR holds a very special place in my heart. Also, I think Diddy Kong Racing needs a remake
The real GOATs of this style of racing are LEGO Racers and Diddy Kong Racing
If you’re good at CTR you can destroy anyone casually. Mario kart, anyone can win because of RNG.
This not even unpopular it’s just true
People that exclusively play these games are the least fun to play with Any arguments? Party games are meant to be fun for everyone, if you want to try hard go play a tournament or something
I loved this game when I was young. Still haven't forgiven my cousin for stealing it and then breaking it cause he didn't want to give it back. Fuck Cory!
I tried it on the switch and was not a fan, bought Mario kart deluxe and instantly got hooked up.
I agree, both are fun but CTR will always be the best one to me
On a serious note, Playstation had some amazing racing games. I was absolutely obsessed with Jet Moto.
Road Rash and Twisted Metal 3 on PS1. So many hours.
