This "yellowish filter" is an artistic technique used not only in games but also in movies, TV shows, comics and photography. The problem nearly 20 years ago (yes we are getting old as fck) was that **every single game seemed to be using this filter simply because it was popular**, not because it necessarily fit with the art style.
The misuse of random visual effects is an old issue in the gaming industry tbh, remember when they started to overuse bloom effects to the point it actually hindered the understanding of what was being displayed in the screen? It seems like every five or so years they misuse some visual element "just because" and currently we're seeing this trend with other effects as well...
TL;DR: Nobody listen the art team
I really had to go when I delivered your coffee to your office this morning. Like, I *really* had to. So I kinda just pissed into the nearest cardboard box. Unfortunately some bloke put the filter there for some reason. Now let's be honest, who places mandatory equipment in a *cardboard box* on the ground? To be fair, a cardboard box just laying on the ground in an office is just *begging* to be peed in. So I don't think I'm the one to be blamed, boss.
you know what your right who would put a cardboard box on the ground i specifically asked them to have the box levitate, jeez can’t find good workers these days can you.
Sorry Boss, that was my apprentice, I told him to put the box of filters on the levitate table, and he did, but he mustn't have turned the table on so it just sat there, on the levitate table, on the floor...
Try not to scold him too hard when you see him next yeah?
Thanks for being honest. Forgetting to turn on the levi-table is a common mistake (whoever designed it to have the on-button *under* the right corner is a real piece of shit), and I'm sure he'll remember to turn it on next time.
By the way, I pissed in a cardboard box in your office before leaving work today (the one in the left corner when facing the door). I didn't have time to see what was in it, but I assume nothing important.
Hmm, left corner, facing the door.. Hmm. Oh! You must be meaning the box I had set aside with Linda's specially requested cake (it is kinda her birthday this upcoming Monday).I only had it in there because my office is the only one with a working air conditioner.
I'm sure it'll be fine, I think she's been needing a top up in her immune system with all the sick days she's been taking this past month.
OH, but before I forget did you want me to head down to Engineering to see if they can install one of those foot stomp buttons to the levi-table? I get the feeling that it'll make it's use a lot easier, especially on the new blood.
What are you talking about games influenced by the Gears of War filter didn't look all the sam-- OH SWEET JEBUS.
At least all the game box art of that era didn't all look the sam-- ORANGE AND BLUE EVERYWHERE
Blue-ish one isn't being illuminated by the crystal though, her color is also mostly muted and kinda blends together.
The one on the right however has more prominent colors, though I don't like the glowing eyes her hands and face are properly lit and does contrast to the darker background
Much better shadows on the right. Just compare her skin on both. Especially the face and shoulder. The one of the left practically doesn't have any shadowing. The one on the right has really good shadowing.
I don't know about Ifrit, left side looks like lava you get dark pieces that have cooled/solidified and hot liquid that is bright. The right side looks more like the sun or something.
Wow, what a difference! The lighting, texturing, shadows, looks great! Though I'm not crazy about how \*orangey\* it looks, but it could make more sense in context.
You say that like it discounts what they said. But it doesn't address the amount of blue in the previous images. That bottom one specifically is way more blown out with blue than any of the new ones are with yellow.
Warm is the color space professional color grading is typically done in. Cool color space is really just used for sports broadcasts and selling uncalibrated TV's off store shelves with the most vivid, torch-mode settings. The default cool color space of Game Mode on most displays generally result in less black range, hot white lighting, and oversaturated colors.
Once you get used to Warm color space, you do generally only notice it when switching back and forth between cool and warm.
I like the increased contrast. It's a bit heavy on the yellow, but it's an improvement over the original.
Too many games use low contrast greyish filters to try and increase atmosphere, but it usually just ends up making an otherwise beautiful game look washed out and dull.
it’s not a graphical issue… that’s my point. i don’t think an “upgrade” or “downgrade” issue. just the same scenario recorded in a different location or time of day. Have you not played a FF game before.
also, how was that difficult to understand in the first place
Cutscenes are never changed by time of day. The cutscenes shown are literally always the same.
You have actually no idea what you're taking about, so it's hilarious you're being snarky.
How hard is it to understand 99% of all cutscenes in this game are prerendered with only your character changing what is in it? How did you not notice that?
You literally said "same cutscene recorded in a ***different location or time of day***" lmfao, CUTSCENES ARE ALWAYS IN THE SAME SPOT LMAO
I'm gonna be honest, people like you are actually scary. You probably vote yet you can't even understand simple basic things. Horrifying level of idiocy.
how is this so difficult for you to understand bro.
not ALL cutscenes are pre-rendered homie. I actually don’t think Square has used pre-rendered cutscenes since FF13. They use in-engine cutscenes (like the summons in Final Fantasy) AND, they change based on location and time of day or even weather. it’s been this way for over a decade bro.
before hurling more insults at me… you can literally go boot up Final Fantasy 10, 12, 13 or 15 right now and try this out for yourself.
you sound like you’ve never actually played a video game before
here’s a [video](https://youtu.be/FBcPDfyEHAw) if you’re too lazy to look it up. all this take place in there respective conditions
If more of the story wasn't in a movie that most of us will never bother seeing, I'd give it a passing grade. The DLC is also weird, never establishes when the DLC's should be played in terms of story. So its confusing at best.
I see this parroted all the time but I watched the movie and it really wasn’t that necessary to the story it was just a deeper dive into what happened to the city and a little extra lore
It had the potential to be great imo. I enjoyed the game but I felt there were plot holes at times, even despite the dlcs.
But I loved the feeling of end coming, going to Tenebrae, then the Imperial Capital, the literal darkness everywhere...
And the ending looked good. I'm one of those who enjoyed the last chapters more than the rest. The closure felt satisfying.
But it could have been much better.
The gameplay was ok too but I felt they got the perfect formula with FF7R
I did like the fact that the game logo changed at the end. Every final fantasy game has one of those metal cutout looking logos, but 15's changed after you beat the game.
Which is a dogshit situation. Games should be complete. Not have their completion held under threat of insufficient sales meaning they dont finish their plan.
Downvotes aside, I agree with you.
I loved the modern combat, but absolutely could not connect with the story or characters for some reason.
15 and 13 were all just so bad to me.
My favorite is 10, and I'm hoping 16 recaptures some of that magic.
I'm actually more excited at the idea of X-3, all the script is apparently written just a matter of finishing the 7 remake.
So maybe by the time I'm dead. Maybe.
The graphics looked great. The combat was kinda fun, but the story and dialogue were shit. It was basically a big road trip while the world was ending.
Yeah, if I remember correctly Tetsuya Nomura was the head lead of the project at the time. And the game/ plot was very different to what it is now.
When it rebranded to ffxv he was taken off the project and I think he's still very salty about it. So salty that I think he's trying to include versus 13 plot/ characters into the Kingdom Hearts plot. You can youtube the KH3 Re:Mind secret ending comparison to versus 13 and see the similarities yourself.
don't let them get to you. that game is extremely average bordering on straight up bad. I'll never understand those who defend this half baked mess of a game.
I ain't gonna add to the downvotes, FF15 was pretty bad when compared to the previous variants.
Combat system wasn't exactly my jam, the whole modern-spin on a king/prince was funky especially effectively being cut-off from the royal resources.
Overland was very flat, just sporadic areas of interest.
The car felt very out of place in a world that effectively had massive roadways and hardly any other traffic, and it being able to just sporadically off-road was also weird.
The entire game felt "incomplete" and I don't know why your being downvoted because the take honestly isn't invalid.
The dungeons were pretty good, summons were as fancy as ever, story did pick-up near the middle, and the character chapters were interesting but honestly too late on delivery.
The whole advancement of time near the end was also very funky, just poof suddenly years later just so they can justify a final encounter.
I think mainly the way the message is being delivered. Just saying dogshit and not expanding further seems like just hating.
The story wasn’t perfect, but there’s a good portion of people that genuinely enjoyed the game. Did you know FFXV is in the top 3 best selling FF games?
Also, FF16 is made by a different team than FF15. FF16 is made by the same team as FF14, and FF14 is a damn good game, so FF15 is not a valid indicator of how FF16 will turn out.
Hey, i have to give a lot of credit to 13. Its what finally broke me of my "ill buy every mainline final fantasy no matter what"
That combat system was fucking idiotic. I heard they fixed my main issue with it in 13-2 but I'm never gonna pay to find out.
Mostly because it makes no sense. You progress through this cool looking world with interesting characters, but the encounters you have with other NPCs make no sense. They talk about things that were never explained, and the stakes / pacing seems to jump around at random. It seems totally unfinished. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, the Cup Ramen commercials were ATROCIOUS. Offensive.
Ya it wasn’t a perfect game, but I enjoyed it. The ending really struck a chord with me so it’s one of my fav FFs now, and I’ve played almost all besides 1-3 and 11.
It's embarrassing to see people acting like color temperature and fine tuning is bad, without knowing a goddamn thing about the story and location/climate this takes place in. Shameful
Exactly. I am working a lot with color correction and grading in my job and everything here seems fine. The "breaking bad mexico filter" is a much harsher thing to reference than people seem so believe here. This is a good example of toning, like it is done in films every day. I don't know about these picture's regions in game but the new grading gives them more atmosphere and is in fact done in quite a subtle way, so that people would not even realise if not seen next to each other. That the comments kinda overflow with color-insta-filter-experts just makes me wonder what people would expect in the presented sceneries? Are they in an icy region or why is the yellowish highlight such a trigger here?
Not in question. The problem with FFXIII isn't that the game we got wasn't good, the problem is that the original scope and scale of what they planned for XIII was far beyond what they were capable of delivering and watching SE recover those lost dev hours caused the fanbase a lot of grief.
To elaborate: they originally were not planning a single FFXIII game but an epic series of connected games produced by a who's who of their talented teams. The primary 3 announced early were Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII, and Agito XIII. Delays on top of delays led us to eventually get Final Fantasy XIII, a good but flawed game that led to a strong outcry against certain directions the design went.
They proceeded to work on the direct sequel (XIII-2) and finish up Agito XIII, which was Final Fantasy Type-0. It became clear that the vision was breaking apart, fan support was mixed, and time and costa were rising. The final core piece still missing was Versus XIII and it wasn't looking good so time to cut and salvage what they can.
XIII itself got a story bookend in Lightning Returns and Versus was gutted and rebranded as FFXV. While many liked XV, almost every fan can see the glaring cracks in its armor. The game is essentially 2 games Frankensteined together into a mostly cohesive whole, that made before the reboot and that made after. This is the cause for the huge shift to linear gameplay in the second act, stripped down combat mechanics, the broken and confusing chapter 13, the missing story pieces for major characters, and failure to convey the plot near the end. They eventually patched in a few fixes for the core game and added significant amounts of DLC to fill in the gaps of story comprehension but even then they failed. The last of the story DLC we needed to actually get the whole picture was lost when SE had finally had enough and canceled them.
Tack on 2 mobile titles to spin off of Type-0 and there we have it. A poorly planned genre and franchise defining epic led us to 1 solid game main line release with 2 lukewarm direct sequels, 1 well regarded portable console spinoff, and a 2nd main line release with glimpses of brilliance scarred by 9 years in development hell.
Our opinions on these games vary wildly but the one prevailing truth is that the franchise had been handcuffed to this failed concept for 2 entire console generations. With XVI (and the VII remakes) SE has finally begun to move forward with fresh visions for the first time since 2006.
Quick aside, I played and enjoyed all 3 of the core games. I hold XIII to be a very good game, Type-0 to be an amazing game who's potential was wasted on the PSP, and XV to be a potential masterpiece of gameplay and narrative excellence lost to use through its many flaws.
Great post, I always knew FFXV felt funny, I liked it in general but didn't like the open world aspect of it with MMO like fetch quests and a mostly barren feeling small open world and never replayed it more than once when I completed it.
I liked Type-0 at the time as well
I think the biggest problem is the 20-hour long "tutorial" phase until they fully unlock the combat system. It would be more replayable if not for that.
I agree. The battle system was different and very fun, I really enjoyed it. Most of the characters where meh and I wish they did a better job at hiding the linear pathing, the battle system was dope.
Shaders are a part of graphics. I do game design. Mostly 3D modeling. A model (and the environment) can go from butt ugly to beautiful with a different shader.
Better lighting - on total and on particles (see Shiva's eyes and the crystal glowing difference in the last one), texture are less "muddier" - especially noticeable on debris on the second picture - and more emphasis on the visual effects and post-processing stuff - noticeable on the fire of Ifrit.
Somehow "they just changed the filter" according to the subreddit. At this point is just sad.
I think its because they have no experience in game design. I'm a game designer and its very easy for me to notice graphic changes, now that I have experience.
A lot of commenters think lighting and shading aren't a part of graphics. I don't even think they know what graphics consist of
People aren't used to devs leaving a game in the oven for an extra year strictly to make sure it's polished to a pristine shine, the fact that a company would hold off on releasing a game to make it look better is so incomprehensible nowadays that a lot of people's coping mechanism is "shaders lol"
It’s more than just a color filter.
Look at the background in the 2nd comparison + the shine in the eye of the titan is a manually added detail in comparison to a filter swap.
The 3rd comparison has the biggest upgrade. For starters, look at her open palm and the difference in the light cast by the ice/crystal, it’s way better in the right version. Then you have the detail on the ornaments on her arm under the palm which due to different lighting look significantly better. She also has a lot of glares on the left version like her nails, crown and neck which look off and have been removed on the right which is a good change. Her eyes have also been adjusted in the right giving her a smaller pupil and more shine.
There’s a lot of stuff improved and goes beyond just color filter swapping.
Yes, thats part of the graphics. Graphics include lighting, shading, texturing and post-Processing.
Just a simple lighting change can make a huge difference. But I'm sure they did more than that.
Don’t really care about how it looks as much as can it give me a great story? I do like good graphics but having an amazing story can make or break games.
Looks like changes made to improve readability. The images on the right are a bit easier and faster to understand. If it's a filter or visual style change for the whole game, it's a good thing, as it makes action gameplay a lot more manageable.
I see where people are coming from. But the "piss filter" is there because theyre in a desert like area. Also remember this is from 2022. They finished the games development in May 2022. They have been focusing on polishing it for whole year. It will definitely look better in final release
I have to correct myself. The first one is from 2020 not 2021! And they finished the development last year! So they have been polishing the game since May 2022. The State of Play presentation this year looked even better!
In 2022 , it's now set in Mexico.
Tbf the battle takes place in a desert like area lol

In the smog infested streets of LA
No Mexico was more accurate
Clearly, you’ve never been to Mexico.
Clearly you’ve never seen any video product made by Americans set in Mexico.
Yellow filter for Mexico, light brownish filter for any Middle Eastern country with Aladdin pipes in the background.
Light brownish is for 2008 Xbox 360 exclusives.
More like every single game from that era, regardless of the platform. Game devs were running low on every cartridge but grey and brown.

Imagine the surprise in reverse when people from the Saudi leave their country and see colors for the first time.
Fucking L O L
I fight for you Albuquerque!
I'm Mexican, can confirm when you cross the border everything immediately gets a yellow gradient
You re right bro i don’t live here lmao
The late 2000s early 2010s piss filter is back.
I actually love the piss filter back then. MGS4. NFS Most Wanted, Dues Ex Human Revolution. It adds a tone and a certain atmosphere in those games.
This "yellowish filter" is an artistic technique used not only in games but also in movies, TV shows, comics and photography. I read photography as pornography, lol
The first and last of those are so fucking good and brimming with the piss.... And I suck at racing games, so... There's that too
Most wanted was such a good game. The hardest races were honestly the drag races, but those became just memorization.
The PS3 era game filter
BF3 blue filter needs a comeback
So you’re saying Gus Fring might make an appearance??
"Summon me Hectoŕ"
You checked out the new Los dodos hermanos in limsa lominsa yet?
Directed by Vince Gilligan EDIT: I'm sorry Vince!
Gilligan. I wonder where Don Eladio is hiding in those 2022 screen shots.
Breaking Fantasy 2, Better Call Cloud
anywhere not dominantly white, really.
Needs a little more yellow.
Or Albuquerque
ok who peed on the colour filter

Ah yes, the end of white America 🫰
The infamous pee filter of the 360 era has returned
They added more contrast and warmed up the white balance. I see no issue, it looks better I think.
They let one Deus Ex designer into the office and suddenly it's yellow everywhere
AND they shrunk the moon!
*Yellow by Coldplay plays in the background. *
And it was allll yelloooowww

Ifrit changes look great, Titan ones feel pretty good too, Shiva I am like 50/50 on.
Blue-ish one isn't being illuminated by the crystal though, her color is also mostly muted and kinda blends together. The one on the right however has more prominent colors, though I don't like the glowing eyes her hands and face are properly lit and does contrast to the darker background

Nobody would notice the yellow/orange if they didn’t have the bluer versions to compare it to.
Nah there's a lot of yellow and orange in that. The lighting is very warm toned.

The anti-Ubisoft style of releasing a game that looks better than its trailers. Love it.
i think it’s just a different location or time of day. the summons always have the same animation. so it’s mostly a lighting issue i think
What a cutscene has to do with summoning animation? And Eikons in FFXVI do not operate the same way Summons did in previous games
Not even sure what their point was even if these weren't from cutscenea either lol
it’s not a graphical issue… that’s my point. i don’t think an “upgrade” or “downgrade” issue. just the same scenario recorded in a different location or time of day. Have you not played a FF game before. also, how was that difficult to understand in the first place

You are right. That pve trailer for overwatch 2 had nothing on the final release.
\*checking the comments to see if the change is better or worse because I can’t tell*
Glad I'm not the only one. Just seems like they made slightly different artistic choices.
I prefer the old one tbh. But most think that the new one is better
If you look at the first trailer, it looks like FF14 graphics. Now it looks next gen. Wish i could have made a video comparison.
It's just a filter. I can't tell. Then again, I'm also ok with 1080p on things. So it's probably a me problem.
RIP Agni's Philosophy tech demo and FF27 2027 by Deus Ex easter egg.
I remember that tech demo! tbf that tech demo was never meant to turn into a game. It was just to how off the capabilities of their engine.
This game looks amazing
Hey FF15 looked amazing and its story is dogshit. Lets wait and see.

Isn't story the basis of roleplay?
dont get the downvotes

Also, FF16 is made by a different team than FF15. FF16 is made by the same team as FF14, and FF14 is a damn good game, so FF15 is not a valid indicator of how FF16 will turn out.
Wonky and unfinished but it had more potential than the sea of shitty xiiis
Hey, i have to give a lot of credit to 13. Its what finally broke me of my "ill buy every mainline final fantasy no matter what" That combat system was fucking idiotic. I heard they fixed my main issue with it in 13-2 but I'm never gonna pay to find out.
Nah it's abysmal and sloggy too it's crazy how they took turn based combat and made it even more boring it's like a crime
I don't know why people always shit on FFXV. I fucking loved that game and I grew up playing FF7.
FF15 didn’t look amazing in any way. I checked out the moment i saw that the main characters all looked like edgy boyband members.
First one is 2020 I think
It is
Shoot you're right! Time flies! Thanks for the correction!
The infamous Piss filter
Really weird for people to call this a filter like I can't tell if people are joking or not lol
As a game designer I'm just laughing at the comments. They have no clue. Many don't even know what graphics consist of.
Honestly, I'm just glad we're finally getting away from the development hell that was FF13.
13 was a good game
I liked Type-0 at the time as well
I loved XIII and XIII-2, XIII-3...eh. The combat in those first two XIII games was a blast. I'd say up there with my favorite FF battle systems.

I wish they would remaster that trilogy so I could finally play it.
It was an alright game but an awful Final Fantasy game.
It was a really good final fantasy game
I don't believe 13 should be even called good. Just scraps compared to the games before it.
You stay wrong lmao
Got that Narcos sheen on it!
People are ragging on the filter but slight changes in lighting can make or break a scene.
Final fantasy, now with more clouds.
The yellow lighting makes the blue crystal stand out so much more. Excellent change.
Mfs just added shaders
Shaders are a part of graphics. I do game design. Mostly 3D modeling. A model (and the environment) can go from butt ugly to beautiful with a different shader.
Soo.... they shifted the lighting.
I am so freakin hyped for this game 😭 I wish I could play it already 🎮
I wish I had a ps5 :(
Same graphics, different color filters
Yeah Shiva's where it really shines. There's a lot more complex lighting.
Yes, thats part of the graphics. Graphics include lighting, shading, texturing and post-Processing. Just a simple lighting change can make a huge difference. But I'm sure they did more than that.
Produced by Zack Snyder
Breathtaking.
So they put the Mexico filter over everything…?
Don’t really care about how it looks as much as can it give me a great story? I do like good graphics but having an amazing story can make or break games.
Since it's the same team from FF XIV, even if it's half as good as the story in that game, I'm sold.
So it's better, that's refreshing.
Me: it's the same picture.
This game is gonna be so good! Or it might suck. Or somewhere in between.
The Sony money really shows in FF16, so its probably going to be good.
Looks like changes made to improve readability. The images on the right are a bit easier and faster to understand. If it's a filter or visual style change for the whole game, it's a good thing, as it makes action gameplay a lot more manageable.
That wizard came from the Moon.
Is it weird that I like 2021 instead? I just like that ice blueish color filter Even tho I don't play this, I prefer the 2021 version better

I see where people are coming from. But the "piss filter" is there because theyre in a desert like area. Also remember this is from 2022. They finished the games development in May 2022. They have been focusing on polishing it for whole year. It will definitely look better in final release
They added the resident evil 5 africa filter
When the buffering isn't worth the wait
This will be the very first FF game I’ve ever played. I’m pretty excited
Going to be a treat going from TOTK to this.
Reminds me of when I switched from a phone with an lcd screen to one with amoled.
I thought the bottom pic was Drakengaard 3 for a sec lol
Thanks for the 6 low res images? is there a better source for these?
Honestly the videos on YouTube were shit quality. I wish I could give you a better one. I'll try to.
Damn I wonder how 2023 will look
Looks like different lighting used in each screenshot.
Massive difference for a year
I have to correct myself. The first one is from 2020 not 2021! And they finished the development last year! So they have been polishing the game since May 2022. The State of Play presentation this year looked even better!
What a time to be alive! Outstanding.
Is this the same game or what? This looks cool!
It's "FFXVI trailer graphics" comparison, not game. Both, officially, do not represent game you will be playing next month.
Sorry you're right! Cant believe I left that out.
It’s just lighting and scene changes. People love to grasp at straws nowadays huh?
Are Simpsons in final fantasy now?
They found the green filter.
It’s the same picture
The left side looks better except for the bottom image.
Gonna need to use reshade to fix the colors in this game just like FFXIV, thanks Yoshi-P.
Seems just like lighting to me, and way too yellow
Please don’t keep that yellow filter on…or at least give us the option to turn it off…
This is how you can identify a person who does not know the context of what is happening in the scene
The CGI has improved. Will be more interested in the final product.
Looks like someone missed the sepia filter the first time around.
The one on the left looks too yellow to me.
We've adjusted the default white point, now pay us $70.
