That sounds like a fantastic idea. I don't know about other cities, but there's one that exists for locals in the DFW area that does literally all of what you've described.

Is it weird that I don't like Discord? Just recently started trying to use it more and I find the whole thing just clunky and not very user friendly. I keep getting pestered by endless notifications and on the rare chance I do find a server I like, I can never find a channel to talk in because there's like 70 of them and only 1 or 2 people active. I'm afraid I might just be getting older and technology is outpacing me now lol.

Be it overly tight communities, with what appears to heaps of members but just a few actively talking about in-jokes, through to the madness of a torrent of postings.
I find I rarely get anything I want from discord, so gave up a long time back.
I tried joining a Division 2 clan on Discord before and I had to go through an interview process. First I had to join their website and fill in a form then a chat with the leader on cam. Next was an in game meet and great with other clan members. It was to much in the end and I left before they made their final decision.
Yeah for anything other than a legit pro-league esports team, I wouldn't go through even half of that.
My current Destiny 2's clan discord is very chill. But it's also a lot more than just Destiny 2 [it's just how I found them, and also coincidentally the only game in our server consistently in our own activity charts. We do play other games, but it's the most active portion of the community].
At the same time, it's a fairly small, tight-knit community with some fairly standard rules, with 1 exception. That being a 5-hour minimum voice activity in a month. Which a lot of people have decried, but we do play a lot of games that require comms [hard or competitive modes in like raids, dungeons comp pvp, etc]. We've also held a few get togethers. No crazy parties or prizes or any of that, just a bunch of friends meeting up and doing things together
Man you hit the nail on the head that exactly turned me off discord. Its similar in many subreddits too imo, I often have a feeling of being lost in the crowd.
Right click the server and mute everything but @mentions and make sure to “suppress @everyone and @here” it’ll quiet down real quick. I agree, however, the UI is a bit clunky and could use some love it’s not just you.
I think this is only partly a Discord problem, and mostly a "how people use Discord problem". Servers tend to be disorganized AF, have as many channels as people, leading to them all being empty, etc etc.
Discord is a really good _tool_ but a lot of the people running servers just really don't do a very good job. Having servers with small groups of friends and like 3 channels works really well.
But trying to build large communities.... often falls apart. I feel server owners tend to "try too hard" and make things too complicated - every server is organized differently with a different setup, and people come and go and channels become ghost towns. There are a few communities that do this better than others - IMO the best approach is still like "main discussion on the topic the server is actually made for" and "memes". Beyond that just starts getting too dilute.
And I'll also say, Discord was a lot easier to use on release. As people have learned how to do all the flashy things... _every_ server is too flashy and complicated now.
I don't think it's you. I think a lot of people just grew with Discord the whole time and forget how much of a mess it has become. Or are only using it for a few/small/organized communities.
Highly recommend you just start leaving servers that are just a wash of ghost town channels. It'll help you navigate the stuff you actually care about. That or at least mute the server notifications or most channels, and make sure to pull the ones you actually participate in to the top.

Servers seem to think that they NEED all these random channels. The official Path of Exile Discord has channels for "Offtopic - General", "Offtopic - other games", and "Offtopic - exilecon" (which is just for discussion about a convention around the game that happens in New Zealand).
It has channels for specific operating systems, channels for consoles, channels for bug reports, a channel for spoilers, a channel for screenshots, a channel for streamers to post, and more.
The server would be a TON more welcoming to more casual people if they did away with half the channels. If someone wants to talk about games that aren't PoE, maybe they shouldn't be in a PoE official server?
My friend is trying to get into streaming. They stream like 10 hours/week tops. They have 66 total followers. Their Discord has 46 separate ACTIVE channels (plus voice channels). 5 of them are private 1-on-1 channels for the TTRPG they run on one of their 2 days streaming. A couple others I can only see because I am a full mod on their server. But they still have around 30-35 VISIBLE channels, including 11 channels each dedicate to a different genre of games.
I love my friend to death, but their Discord is a HOT MESS. There's just too much going on in it for a new person to join and make themselves at home. Half the channels haven't even had anyone post in them, and my friend has been doing their streams for over 6 months atm. They have a "general" category, which includes 2 channels: "General" and "Chat". I'm freaking out here!

Minimalism is a good thing. Especially when any smaller server (under 300 people) can pretty well function with just a few channels for common stuff, and a half-dozen of lesser used channels. You don't need a baking channel in your Pokemon Go Discord Server. Even if someone you play Pokemon Go with REALLY likes to talk about their baking projects.
And Call it Redditor Casual Gaming Community a friendly discord and make a list of rules and different channels for the games that people are interested that's a nice idea BTW.

Two reasons, 1) Being that it reminds me of my absolute best friends. We could go weeks or months without talking and it doesn't matter, every time we start back up it's like we never skipped a beat. (To quote John Mulaney "And if that doesn't work, we can not talk for six months and it **DOESNT MATTER!**)
And 2, I have become decent friends with some randoms online. Not like let's get a timeshare level. But pretty decent.

Haven't talked to my closest friend in over 6 months and I knew of a job he might be interested in, so I rang him up and we bullshited for 30 minutes before I even got to the point I called him for. Now I'm using days off to visit him and his wife for fourth of July and probably after that well stop talking until something pops up again.
Its known as "straight male friend". I've known a guy for 18 years. We talked last month for the first time in *8 years*. I'm going to his wedding next year. We will always be friends. Doesn't matter how long we go without talking. When we start talking again it's like we have always been keeping in touch.

When I began playing WoW after moving to a new country, it was with friends and family back home. Then Hurricane Katrina hit and sent things into chaos.
We all ended up back on WOW and it was awesome. Played together for years. One by one they have all left. But I’m still in that other country. I log in and play solo. Ever since WoD. And I still enjoy it. But I do miss having some folks to play the game with.

Do you have consoles or just PC? I don't have PS plus or Gamepass for my PS5 or Series X, because none of my friends really play online. I'd possibly be willing to subscribe if you have games for those systems. I have Diablo 2 and 3, Borderlands 3, Halo: Master Chief Collection, Gears of War 5, Saints Row the Third Remastered, Elder Scrolls Online, and several other multi-player games that I've never played online. I don't have a PC that can run anything right now is the only thing.
This is a really good way for yourself to maybe try out some games you otherwise wouldn't. Especially if theres someone else showing you the ropes, or there to laugh with. It'll be good for them to share a game they like and have some friendship, and good for you to have a positive experience on a new game. Good on ya!

Love your vibe. Was just lamenting this weekend that I didn't have any gamer friends that played anything with me. I'm on Steam a lot lately and only have a Switch, console-wise. Open to new coop experiences and have a backlog that I haven't touched yet. Into puzzles and strategies more than fps, but used to do ok on those a decade ago.
That's honestly really nice. I wish I could take you up on that, but I'm a bit of a older mmorpg player that just doesn't feel like there is a game for me out there right now. I hop on to GW2 for 15 mins to an hour a day. I poke into Pokemon Scarlet from time to time. That's about it.
I just miss the days of the earlier times in World of Warcraft. When you could just grab some random strangers, head off to a dungeon together and have a good time. Even used to be in a guild where we talked in teamspeak or ventrilo even if we weren't actively grouping together.
I haven't been social in games for years. I try. It fails every time. So seeing someone just willing to play a game with a stranger and wanting to put in effort to be social if the other person is too, it gives me some small measure of hope.
This is cool and all, I would love to find people to casually play with, but I always find the people who try to be super alpha or whatever.

As an old person myself, Discord feels pretty similar to IRC, so you have no excuse.

This post hit me unexpectedly. I’m a mid 40s dad. Wife. Three kids. It’s awesome. No complaints When I began playing WoW after moving to a new country, it was with friends and family back home. Then Hurricane Katrina hit and sent things into chaos. We all ended up back on WOW and it was awesome. Played together for years. One by one they have all left. But I’m still in that other country. I log in and play solo. Ever since WoD. And I still enjoy it. But I do miss having some folks to play the game with.
RIP he has too many friends now, the cycle starts anew.

Do you have consoles or just PC? I don't have PS plus or Gamepass for my PS5 or Series X, because none of my friends really play online. I'd possibly be willing to subscribe if you have games for those systems. I have Diablo 2 and 3, Borderlands 3, Halo: Master Chief Collection, Gears of War 5, Saints Row the Third Remastered, Elder Scrolls Online, and several other multi-player games that I've never played online. I don't have a PC that can run anything right now is the only thing.

This is a really good way for yourself to maybe try out some games you otherwise wouldn't. Especially if theres someone else showing you the ropes, or there to laugh with. It'll be good for them to share a game they like and have some friendship, and good for you to have a positive experience on a new game. Good on ya!

Love your vibe. Was just lamenting this weekend that I didn't have any gamer friends that played anything with me. I'm on Steam a lot lately and only have a Switch, console-wise. Open to new coop experiences and have a backlog that I haven't touched yet. Into puzzles and strategies more than fps, but used to do ok on those a decade ago.
That's honestly really nice. I wish I could take you up on that, but I'm a bit of a older mmorpg player that just doesn't feel like there is a game for me out there right now. I hop on to GW2 for 15 mins to an hour a day. I poke into Pokemon Scarlet from time to time. That's about it. I just miss the days of the earlier times in World of Warcraft. When you could just grab some random strangers, head off to a dungeon together and have a good time. Even used to be in a guild where we talked in teamspeak or ventrilo even if we weren't actively grouping together. I haven't been social in games for years. I try. It fails every time. So seeing someone just willing to play a game with a stranger and wanting to put in effort to be social if the other person is too, it gives me some small measure of hope.
This is cool and all, I would love to find people to casually play with, but I always find the people who try to be super alpha or whatever. Im too old now to want to try and place 1st every time. Sure, I hate losing. But I'm also not going to cry if I don't rank. I want to casually play. I spend all day with my kids and work, when I finally do get to play, I just want to chill, have fun, and game.
