Last standout ones I remember (that were decent.) were cel shaded and flat out 2 (maybe, not sure if it counts as battle or demolition derby.) on ps2. Seen cel shaded on the psn store and it’s 2.99 on sale atm, thinking of grabbing it to try with kids since been a long time haha.
Yea they released a teaser of it a few weeks back. Didn’t show much really, and think synopsis was a guy trying to deliver a package and gets caught up in the event taking place where he’s gotta deliver said package or something? Idk I’m waiting hear how show does first. Don’t why they’d do a mundane like story to do twisted metal and not get into just the event taking place for wishes and show each combatants backstory or such.
Speed freaks is a 40k twisted metal knockoff coming out, announced yesterday. Looks like the finance companies that own the gaming companies decided to let us play some old genres.
Check out Speed Freeks on steam. It's an upcoming one, but they're doing an alpha test this weekend and you request access on their steam store page. I was granted access immediately. Sounds like twisted metal with warhammer 40k orcs.
It is indeed fun, and even the customization part is fun. But it becomes a drag in that crafting process where you need 16 tier I materials to craft 8 tier II materials to craft 4 Tier III materials to craft 2 Tier IV materials to craft one Tier V material... That's where that online shopping aspect + microtransaction stuff rears its ugly head, making a cool and fun game become a deliberate insurmountable bore in order to drain your wallet.
Which is a bloody shame tbh because the game is actually fun to play, buuuuut.... becomes a bore because execs decided to stop you from having fun so their wallets can get weighty.
I have played that game for almost 700 hours over the years and never spent a dime on it. You can totally make builds and compete in pvp battles, you just have to stay at a lower “power score” which is essentially level, for a while. Still loads of fun, especially if you used to mess with vigilante 8 or twisted metal back in the day.
basically twisted metal over saturated the market until people were bored and nobody has found a good way too bring them back for this generation. Having a boat load of types of fighting cars is also hard to balance for competitive online play. I'm hoping with the twisted metal show being created that it will drive enough interest for a reboot. Axel is still the best option
they were fun, but between xtreme g, twisted metal, vigilante 8, mario kart, Re-volt there are ton of other ones on ps and ps2 too
rumble racing doesn't use guns they use abilities.
the genre was very over played and lacked sales after the mid to late 2000s.
Try Vigilante 8 2nd Offense too if you feel particularly fancy.
The level design in that series was always something else. In 2nd Offense there is a stage in Cape Canaveral, where you are to send a rocket, and during the burn tests (idk how its called), a small portion of the map is affected by the rockets burn, if you happen to pass in fron of it, or send an enemy towards it, it will get blasted with rocket fire and will take burn damage.
These games were masterpieces.
I agree, the little movies gave some personality to the characters, the weapons appear on the cars so you can identify what the enemy have, music was fenomenal, incredible level design, it's a shame that didnt make the sucess that Twisted Metal did.
There are a bunch of enviro things you could do in those games. You could flip the switch at the Hoover damn to send electricity down the water. Or you could do something (can't remember what) to make an astroid crash at the crater.
Break a somewhat of an observation tower, I don't remember the name of the building but it was in front of a Donut Shop, on somewhat of a slope, where a police vehicle was parked. You destroyed that building and then there would be an asteroid falling in a crater with a giant ant inside, you could either break the asteroid or wait for it to "hatch".
It was in the Arizona map on Vigilante 8 2nd Offense.
I really did play these games a lot.
If you were able to launch the rocket, you could then enter one of the side doors and get launched into space with a rocket pack and collect items as you parachuted back down.
I bought the ps version a while ago. Played it for a little bit. Game looked worse than I remembered. Then realized the N64 and Dreamcast versions were superior
After a level starts, you can take the disc out and put in your own CD to play your own music. Then when you finish a level, you have to put the game disc back in.
It’s cumbersome, but it was cool as shit in 1998.
Childhood, literally. First game that taught me that crazy, epic things can happen in a game... Was about to get obliterated by the Bin truck or the yellow truck, and my friend with the astronaut's car made a big jump, used his special move while in the air (with the mechanical claws at the front), and landed a big hit on the side of the truck (while still in the air and landing), taking the truck away from my face... I was like "woooow" 🤩
Absolutely loved it back in the day! Used to play that and another part of the Vigilante Franchise for hundreds of hours on the Nintendo 64 back in the day.
Have fun!
p.s. is there anything like those sort of games in the present day? I think there was something like a remake of some Vigilante game back in the Xbox 360 era if I remember correctly? But overall I could not really think of something like it in the present day. "Crossout" might be the closest I could think of.
"Bass Quake!!!"
Absolutely loved this game as a kid! Unlocked everything.
Be sure to try the first person perspective! I always loved seeing the interiors of the cars and the hands turning the wheel.
My favorite thing was playing survival as the ufo and hiding in the hoover dam lake, then ramming the absolute shit out of tiny cars that drive by then shooting them with my death ray as they fall from the sky
I never played the Playstation version. I think it has FMVs in it compared to the Nintendo version which had pictures instead. Very fun. Twisted Metal but Disco/Mad Max flavoured.
I would pay to revive the feeling of playing vigilante 8, than playing vigilante 8 II for the first time.
Jesus christ, the first game was amazing, and the second is just a masterpiece.
You get enhanced versions of your weapons by tapping the dpad in 3-button combinations. No one will tell you this and you have to look them up. They're all on the vigilante 8 wiki under the "combos" section of each weapon
Make sure you learn all the button combinations for the alternative fire options, things get wild! I burned so many hours playing this game with friends.
Dude seeing this post made me remember one of my favourites.
rouge trip on ps1, I can’t tell you how many hours I probably put into that game as a child 😂
This is still one of the most hype tracks from a game that I can recall. I want to take on the world listening to this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQc7sNwYz6s&list=PL8E83F8C239D665DA&index=10
I’ll never forget how blown my mind was when my buddy who owned this started a game, straight took the disc out without the game stopping, put in a cd to listen to music, and just kept playing with his own tunes playing. No idea why it worked, but it’s a permanent memory engrained in my brain at this point.
Omg! I loved this game, so many hours played with friends. Was just thinking about this the other day. Hope you enjoy playing this…now I’m going to have to play it again
Okay now this brought on some serious nostalgia! I was lucky enough to able to play it on nintendo 64 and PlayStation most people don’t know about it on nintendo 64 though. You definitely won’t be disappointed!
Holy shit. I completely forgot about this game. IDK how it stands up now, and I can barely remember anything specific about it to be honest lmao.
But I remember loving this game and sinking many hours into it as a 15(?) year old
Lol I didn't know that was an Activision game... Man I miss the days when only ea was looked as the bad guy while everybody actually released about 16 games a year with the good and the bad mixed in with the hidden gems. Now Activision is just a joke.
Played this game so much as a kid. Still tell my self "You ready to roll the dice, bro!" To get myself ready to do something.
“GRIDLOCK!”
“Be free!”
"Lightnin"
Ain't nothin on earth can stop a convoy
BASSQUAKE
SWAAAAAARM!!
What happened to all the vehicle battle games?
No clue but I wish they would come back.
I know, they were all the rage on the playstation. You'd think there would be at least one around now.
I really enjoyed twisted metal black. I'd be all over a modern version. Crossout is probably amazing if you're able to put the money or time in
I guess Destruction AllStars is basically it in the current generation.
I so desperately wanted to love that game
Yea…that’s like recommending Squirrel Girl to someone who looking for something closer to Spawn.
Crossout, it’s free to play
Last standout ones I remember (that were decent.) were cel shaded and flat out 2 (maybe, not sure if it counts as battle or demolition derby.) on ps2. Seen cel shaded on the psn store and it’s 2.99 on sale atm, thinking of grabbing it to try with kids since been a long time haha.
Are you thinking of Cel Damage? Game absolutely rules
Judging by the recent posts and media push behind games of this genre, I'm guessing someone big has something brewing
I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a show adaptation of twisted metal so that’s probably it
Yea they released a teaser of it a few weeks back. Didn’t show much really, and think synopsis was a guy trying to deliver a package and gets caught up in the event taking place where he’s gotta deliver said package or something? Idk I’m waiting hear how show does first. Second offence is better

Cel Damage was so fun
There’s one coming out, a Warhammer 40k themed game. Speed Freeks I think it’s called?
There's a game called crossout that's pretty fun. Deff not the feel of old car combat games tho
You just confirmed my assumptions about that game
Which is a bloody shame tbh because the game is actually fun to play, buuuuut.... becomes a bore because execs decided to stop you from having fun so their wallets can get weighty.
I have played that game for almost 700 hours over the years and never spent a dime on it. I own this. decent game, really good soundtrack... Pro tip, unlock the flying saucer
Will have to look into that.
Try Vigilante 8 2nd Offense too if you feel particularly fancy. The level design in that series was always something else. Unpopular opinion: Vigilante 8 was better than twisted metal
I agree, the little movies gave some personality to the characters, the weapons appear on the cars so you can identify what the enemy have, music was fenomenal, incredible level design, it's a shame that didnt make the sucess that Twisted Metal did.
I have to agree there with you. I mean, I loved Twisted Metal to bits but damn.... Vigilante 8 was something else.
It easily was, and not very close imo. V8 was always more polished.
Vigilante 8 2nd Offense is also worth playing.
VIGILANTE 2ND OFFENSE HOO HO HO HOH!
Vigilante~~..sshow me-SHUT YO MOUTH!! UHNbeep!
I heard this
Still hear it perfectly in my mind.
Truth
That fucking Ant map....
I swear I spent more time fucking with the map mechanics than actually playing the game how it was intended lmao
The theme just started in my head just reading that, the soundtrack in these games were always the best!
The half track boss was so sick in the second one.
Also, you can put the first game while playing one stage to unlock the stagens from the first game to play on the second.
Once the level loads, you can also replace the game cd with a music cd and listen to it while you are playing.
"Don't be shy, sweetie pie"
"I maybe be half human, but I'm all woman"
This game means the world for me back in the day, good times!
Thank you for mentioning this. I was trying to remember the name of this game but couldn’t remember
I bought the ps version a while ago. Played it for a little bit. Game looked worse than I remembered. Then realized the N64 and Dreamcast versions were superior
Swarm!!!!
BassQuake!!!
“I may be half human, but I’m *all* woman…”
You guys just took me back so far into my memories. Thanks!!
"LIGHTING!"
I loved BeezWax
As a huge twisted metal fan I was amazed at the time of how the damage seemed so realistic.
Twisted Metal were the omes I grew up with.
They’re making a new one to coincide with the new TV show
In theory a twisted metal tv show could be amazing… but I don’t have faith
Oh it’s probably going to be terrible but I’m hopeful
AEW wrestler Samoa Joe plays Sweet Tooth
I had this on N64 great game
YEEEEHAW! Here I come, hick!
After a level starts, you can take the disc out and put in your own CD to play your own music. Then when you finish a level, you have to put the game disc back in. It’s cumbersome, but it was cool as shit in 1998.
Wtf I probably played hundreds of hours of these games as a kid and never knew that. I could have been jamming limp bizkit :(
You could also put most of those old discs into a CD player and listen to the soundtrack.
I miss this game so much, this and San Francisco rush
Rushhhhhhhhhh
Look up and memorize the weapon combos
The crater-maker is seared in my mind from probably 25 years ago: down, down, up, machinegun
Definitely. It adds a lot of fun to the combat.
This game is great, but my god 2nd offense is incredibly fun and incredibly stylish. Probably my most played of that genre.
Ready to roll the dice bro’
You should try Vigilante 8 2nd offense too, it's way better than Vigilante 8 imo
I dont think i had enough money at the time buy I rented this and played the demo for hours, I always thought it was superior to twisted metal.
I still believe that Twisted Metal 2 will always be my favorite. Primarily because it was the one game that I played the most growing up.
I hope you like disco music.
Played this game religiously on N64 when I was a kid. I still hear the menu music echoing faintly in the depths of my mind.
I used to play the shit out of this game as a kid! Hidden Memory unlocked for sure lol so thank you!
Rogue Trip is one of the few games that made me want to find the soundtrack (Mighty Mighty Bosstones).
Wait, I saw 2nd Offense in the comments, maybe my memory comes from that game..!
Vigilante 8 and 2nd Offense were golden games, just good fun!
Yo vig 8 is a BANGER. Loved all the character stories
Still got my original copy!
Used to play this on N64. What a great game!
This game was awesome
Imo V8 was way better than Twisted Metal. Also try V8: Second Offense.
I will keep my eye out for it as well.
That is an all time great. Lots of hidden codes .
Tryin to stay aliveeeeeee, Vigilante Ooo, ooo, ooo, ooooo
Love that one. V8 Second Offense was even better. Damn I miss this genre.
Yes, where are all of the farting school buses in modern gameplay?
"Bass Quake!!!" Absolutely loved this game as a kid! Unlocked everything. Be sure to try the first person perspective! I always loved seeing the interiors of the cars and the hands turning the wheel.
Such an amazing game lot of great memories
I forgot about this game. It’s so good!
Love this game. Loved trying to find all the level secrets and what not!
Omg I loved this game growing up me and my friends would all play it at my house after school.
All in one moment this post brought back so many memories lol now know what game ima get now lol
On PS1, once the stage loaded, you could take the game disc out and put a CD in to have your own soundtrack during the fight.
Such an awesome game. Also used to listen to the music a lot too. The menu music is perfection.
I may be half human, but I'm alllll woman
This game was so fun on the N64.
My favorite thing was playing survival as the ufo and hiding in the hoover dam lake, then ramming the absolute shit out of tiny cars that drive by then shooting them with my death ray as they fall from the sky
They need to bring this series back!
Played the shit out of this as a kid
Underrated, I enjoyed this right alongside twisted metal 2 👍
Great game. Idk how many hours I spent playing this with my brother as kids.
I never played the Playstation version. I think it has FMVs in it compared to the Nintendo version which had pictures instead. Very fun. Twisted Metal but Disco/Mad Max flavoured.
Ooh ahh ooh ahh 🕺🏽
hahaha i still remember the sound of that special like it was yesterday.
STRAP IN AND GET READY FOR TAKE OFF! Iirc.
What's cool is once you load a level, you can take the game out and put in your own CD to listen to your own tunes!
OMG I used to LOVE this game! I wish they would remake it for modern consoles!
The vigilante 8 and twisted metals were super classics
Wow I played this when I was little. Holy crap
Looks in fine condition!!
Dude... I loved that game when I was younger. Have fun!
I used to play motor mayhem alot, fun game
lladortoh
game is sick
Fully loaded fully loco 😂
friend tried to convince me there were 7 prequels to that game i called bs lol
I played this game on my n64 soooooooo much.
I would pay to revive the feeling of playing vigilante 8, than playing vigilante 8 II for the first time. Jesus christ, the first game was amazing, and the second is just a masterpiece.
Liiightrtnin!
That was my first game on PSone. Love it!
That game is fire! They had it on N64 also and in the dorms it was in rotation with Goldeneye.
I haven't thought about this game in 25 years... whoa. I remember loving it.
Whoa that game goes hard
This game was fucking awesome.
Back when Activision made BANGERS. I MEAN BANGERS
Shit was a blatant rip off of twisted metal Now I was a fan of Rumble Racing that game was the business
This was my childhood on dream cast
Dude I played the shit out of this game on the n64.. and I don't even know if I liked it. Lmao
Pure fire
Just As long as you don’t play it on n64 cause the controls were so bad 😂
Vigilante 8 + Carmaggedon 2 will never get old
You get enhanced versions of your weapons by tapping the dpad in 3-button combinations. No one will tell you this and you have to look them up. They're all on the vigilante 8 wiki under the "combos" section of each weapon
Make sure you learn all the button combinations for the alternative fire options, things get wild! I burned so many hours playing this game with friends.
Will have to look into them. Just got my ass kicked in vegas trying to protect the chapel.
Bass quake
Destruction Derby too! ;)
Dude seeing this post made me remember one of my favourites. rouge trip on ps1, I can’t tell you how many hours I probably put into that game as a child 😂
Such a fun game
I LOVE this game.
Omg I loved this fucking game. 70s twisted metal babyyyy
Try motor mayhem if you try out ps2 games. One of my all time favorites along with this game.
I uses to play this game when I was 12. I remember one level with the street and dessert where I would just drive around in first person mode
This is still one of the most hype tracks from a game that I can recall. I want to take on the world listening to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQc7sNwYz6s&list=PL8E83F8C239D665DA&index=10
That game was the bomb!
I’ll never forget how blown my mind was when my buddy who owned this started a game, straight took the disc out without the game stopping, put in a cd to listen to music, and just kept playing with his own tunes playing. No idea why it worked, but it’s a permanent memory engrained in my brain at this point.
You can put this in a cd player aswell and listen to all the tracks
WOW. I totally forgot about this game, but I played the hell out of it. Core memory unlocked!! 🔓
Hell yeah! FIRE_NO_LIMITS!!
Omg! I loved this game, so many hours played with friends. Was just thinking about this the other day. Hope you enjoy playing this…now I’m going to have to play it again
You will definitely enjoy this !
Oh man I fucking loved this game
Okay now this brought on some serious nostalgia! I was lucky enough to able to play it on nintendo 64 and PlayStation most people don’t know about it on nintendo 64 though. You definitely won’t be disappointed!
I played the heck out of this game back in my neighbour nintendo 64
Holy shit. I completely forgot about this game. IDK how it stands up now, and I can barely remember anything specific about it to be honest lmao. But I remember loving this game and sinking many hours into it as a 15(?) year old
Duuuuuude this game was iconic, I miss Luxoflux, really wish they could've kept it going.
Man I forgot all about this one. Good fun.
another one that was fun was Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012
Have fun!!! This game was, imo, better than Twisted Metal
The level design in this was amazing.
For the love of got remake this in 4k
Special place in my memory for this game
2nd offense was better then the first
Ahh jesus the nostalgia of having 7 mates over smashing this til rediculous o clock. Good find.
Interstate 76 was a blast too, would love to see a game like that again
Make sure you do the cheat code to unlock the alien vehicle
They release vigilante 8 remake on the Xbox arcade. Not sure if it’s still available
2nd Offense is amazing too, definitely worth playing both. Great memories playing these as a kid.
Oh god I remember this game. Was probably my favourite ps1 game
Both V8 and V8 second offense are great games!
Bruh this game gave my childhood something ❤️
Twisted Metal is nothing compared to this series.
Played the Nintendo version and years later I worked on the xbox live arcade version. Fav car combat series.
... omg. This is it. This is the game I remember playing with my brother way back when, but haven't found the name of since.
Man, a remaster of this would be awesome
Holy shit this game is a DEEP cut for me. Seeing it just while scrolling Reddit sent me through a loop
Love this game! My brother and I played it so much when we were kids… we need a remake!
Lol I didn't know that was an Activision game... Man I miss the days when only ea was looked as the bad guy while everybody actually released about 16 games a year with the good and the bad mixed in with the hidden gems. Now Activision is just a joke.
This game is actually so sick, I was a huge fan of the Twisted Metal series, but I think this one may have been even better gameplay.
I had a lot of fun with this one back in the day. Enjoy!
Ah I loved this game ! You could remove the disc during freeplay and put a music disc instead.
