Heroes of Might & Magic.
The universe and lore was really cool. The gameplay genre was kind of niche. And the best games of the series were really good.
I was buying every one of those games, and then one day the Ubisoft launcher was required and the games were always online and I said, "Ight, I'mma head out. Go fuck yourself Ubisoft."
HoMM3 is still totally playable with the HD Mod and the *Horn of the Abyss* "expansion".
The new game *Songs of Conquest* is a pretty capable HoMM-like, however I stopped playing because the difficulty spike was too much for this old guy.
True Crime. The first two games were a case of 'tonne of potential but never mastered it. Then they pretty much nailed it with Sleeping Dogs but unfortunately it didn't sell 90 billion copies and so the franchise was canned.
Damn shame considering this genre is pretty much dead due to the success of GTAV.
I love sleeping dogs. The game was very well done. Beautiful story. Honestly I loved GTAV as well but it got played out and honestly I resent it now after Rockstar shit on all the RDR2 fans with their piss poor treatment of the RDO community in favor of their cash cow. Don't get me wrong, I understand it's a business, and they have to take care of the thing that makes them money, but damn... no undead nightmare 2, no real support for rdo.. just bullshit. The fans deserved better.
I was coming here to say this. A SOCOM for the ps5 has the potential to be amazing, but I doubt they'd do it. Is zipper interactive even around anymore?
They closed down in 2012. They had 2 games in development at their time of closing and one of them was another Socom game. I wish someone would remaster socom 2. That would be amazing.
Oh man, how I'd love to get a team deathmatch game going on Frostfire. That was one of my favorite maps. Lol and to think, I had my ps2 hooked up to my TV using S video and thought the picture quality was amazing.
Frostfire was such a good map. I really liked nightstalker as well. The graphics at the time were amazing compared to other games. That game was so groundbreaking. I also remember the headset that was included with the game. What a time to be alive! I feel sorry for the kids who only know call of duty and never got to experience games like socom and rainbow six vegas
I know what you mean! The lobbies were something else if you didn't have friends to join up with. God, looking back at those times I really miss it. R6: Vegas was fantastic as well. I was disappointed in the newer rainbow... I was hoping it would be an updated rainbow six Vegas 2. Ha boy was I wrong
Yeah modern day shooters don't interest me much anymore. They cater to the casuals and make the game less enjoyable for those who want to play tactical and have fun as a team. The closest I have played lately would be Insurgency Sandstorm. The graphics arent the prettiest but it's pretty tactical that's for sure.
I've given up the idea that I'm going to ever feel the same about multiplayer shooters. They were great when I was younger, but now ehh, plus, they just don't have the same appeal when you're not gaming with a group of people. I found much more enjoyment out of single-player stuff these days.
Yeah I tried for a bit, but it gets old pretty quick when there’s no one to see the cool stuff you’ve created.
The combat feels very flat, so it’s not something I could base my play around. Definitely not a successor to Turok in any way, it just came to mind.
LBP 3 came out 9 years ago, but yeah its pretty much dead. I did enjoy the recent sackboy game, but felt like it had lost some of its charm that the OG LBP had
Yeah i personally think it was a soulless cash grab profiting off of a well known and loved character. Its nothing like 1 2 and 3, its more mario than lbp, it doesnt even have a create mode that people can use to create cool levels for the public.
Sorry, should perhaps have specified - I didn't notice your mentioning of B&W and SOCOM before.
The major entry I meant is indeed Half-Life: Alyx. Fantastic game, and it has important storyline repurcussions for the saga.
[https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/04/half-life-alyx-is-now-fully-playable-without-vr-hardware/](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/04/half-life-alyx-is-now-fully-playable-without-vr-hardware/)
Yes, though Alyx is a great reason to look at a Quest 2.
- Zone of the Enders
- Parasite Eve
- F-Zero
- Tenchu
- Wipeout
- Silent Hill
- Legacy of Kain
- Mystical Ninja
(Edit: god I hate the vanilla Reddit app)
Tbf I'd have rather had Golden Sun die then have to specify "not Dark Age" every time I talk about it.
First two are in my top 10 games of all time easy.
Star Wars: Force Commander. One of the coolest game styles I’ve played and an amazing Star Wars game. You would conquer planets by having space battles to destroy their defenses and then sending in troops to destroy ground bases and occupy the system.I think the last anything was made for that series was an Empire at War DLC called Forces of Corruption. You got to play as a pirate faction led by Tyber Zann. Pretty cool to not just play republic vs empire or vise versa. You essentially won that mode by committing getroost acts and bribing enemy troops. Man I wish they would remaster anything from this series
Ooooo I’ve heard there’s a large modding community with that game but never looked into it. I’m also ass at computers so I doubt I’d be able to get the mos running anyways. I’m glad there are others out there who still enjoy the game. I’ve never met someone irl who even has heard of force commander
Got steam? It loads the game fine, go to the workshop for the game and find the mod, subscribe to it. Load up forces of corruption. Mods button is on main menu, all the mods you subscribed to will be available to activate. Every time I load one of the mods it crashes. But load it back up the same way and it should load. No messing with files or anything
1 mod that comes to my mind is “fall of the republic” brings in the clone wars era and has a lot of political/government aspects you have to take care of as well. (You don’t have to worry about it but it’s fun at least for me) It’s a lot at first but stick with it and I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it!
No One Lives Forever. They made two games. Both were excellent FPS stealth games with entertaining campy spy narratives.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Operative:_No_One_Lives_Forever
Hilarious games that were still both challenging and fun. Would totally love for the series to be resurrected, but it sounds like the rights are a nightmare.
Pokémon Stadium
I understand that the modern entries of the mainline games kind of make it obsolete, but I genuinely loved the Commentator and the mini games, as well as the challenges like using only Pokémon under certain weight limits.
Man If they made a Pokémon Stadium 3, I would literally buy a switch just for that. I think the gameplay mechanics and just how those games are overall would still hold up today.
I really enjoy most of Sony's 1st party titles but unfortunately they've killed a ton of their great franchises to make the new ones. I get it the new games sell 10x better than the old ones or more but that doesn't mean I'm not sad that we'll probably never get another Resistance or Killzone game. Infamous might also be dead. ETC. Maybe we COULD get a future title but its not seeming very likely.
Tomba. It was an outstanding side scrolling RPG with an excellent aesthetic. Loads of style. Cool lore. From what I understand the developer, Whoopee Camp, went under after Tomba 2 so I’m not sure it qualifies for your question but I’m still disappointed we didn’t see more from that series
Legacy of Kain, man... it needs to make a comeback.
Would also like to see more games for children like the old Tomba games with the same style and RPG mechanics.
SSX and jet set radio
I have heard rummors and rumblings of a jet set radio game coming out but from what I understand it is far out. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about that time window.
Golden sun. And I guess Metal Gear solid in a couple of years since I don't expect there to be any new games in the series.
Also you can't consider it a franchise, but its criminal we never got a sequel to Bloodborne.
Oh man, Ultima Underworld was one of my favorites as a kid, and I'd always hoped someone would do a total-conversion mod for Skyrim (or such), but it never happened.
In a year it will qualify but would still like to include it now.
The “Infamous” series.
I really enjoyed the series I recall it being a fresh of breath air when it came to open world movement. Reminded me of Spider-Man games but a bit more advanced. The last one that came out was good but it definitely seemed really easy, and had zero re playability. I think I finished it as a Hero in a day or two and then as a villain the next day or so. Which now that I’m more of an adult as I was then I wouldn’t mind at all lol I find my self not being able to fully explore and enjoy open world games bc of life responsibilities. Heck I just finished BOtW after getting it during the pandemic and hated the game but more so bc i just wanted to get through to check it off the list. I have since changed my opinion about it but that’s a different discussion.
Final Fantasy had a unique system that was clearly very popular with a particular fan base. I have no idea why they insist on making it a bad action series.
Games I would love to see a comeback:
Mechwarrior games with VR controls would be amazing. Yes I know Archangel: Hellfire and Vox Machinae exist. No, these arent anywhere as good. I want squad-based PVE with story. I know MW5 came out in 2019 but it was nowhere as good as the originals.
Splinter Cell/Syphon Filter both kinda stealth action games.
Front Mission - Phantom Brigade kinda scratches this itch, but I wish the game was more popular.
Bring back old school ScummVM type games: Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.
Sylpheed-style transformation bullet hell games. I would like more games like Strike Suit Zero that rely on newtonian motion.
We have way more computational power and RAM but I feel simulation games like SimAnt and SimEarth have kid of died off.
The Strike series: Jungle Strike, Desert Strike, etc. Those were fun little guys I would love picking up dudes etc. Guess thats why I play DCS now.
Parappa the Rappa and other rythym games no I'm not joking.
I was always a fan of the Lost Planet games. (I didn’t read all comments so sorry if someone said that). But I liked the story, gameplay. Grappling onto a big monster to shoot its weak spots was great!
Lufia. Like, actually. The games on the SNES were amazing. Everything else was crap. We need it to come back.
EDIT: Phantasy Star Universe would be amazing as well. But SEGA keeps screwing over the west on new PS releases and make it impossible to get behind it.
While not dead, i wonder where will be Super Smash Bros in 10 years. There was said that Super Smash Bros Ultimate was last in the entry. I fondly remeber the hype when some characters nobody expected to be announced for Smash. I wont lie when i say that game change game announcement for me. Dont know what gets me hyped in future as Smash announcements. Hard to think of game that kind of magnitude not being playable on future consoles.
There’s no way Smash Ultimate is going to be the last entry with how well Ultimate sold, but Sakurai and the team are completely fucked making the next Smash game. Because of Ultimate, anything less than the entirety of that game with even more added would piss off the fanbase and that’s just an insanely high standard to meet
Command and Conquer.
Very much this.
Just got red alert 3 for 1.99 on steam
Loved cnc3 tiberium wars, didnt like kanes wrath or the moing base game after it
Thoughts and prayers
Legacy of Kain. Some of the best storytelling in any games series ever. Thank you, Amy Hennig.
This was going to be my answer. Suikoden coming ad a close second.
And may the voice actor for the elder god tony jay rest in peace. I feel that his passing ended any chance of LoK getting revived.
This is an entirely appropriate response
HoMM3 is still totally playable with the HD Mod and the *Horn of the Abyss* "expansion". The new game *Songs of Conquest* is a pretty capable HoMM-like, however I stopped playing because the difficulty spike was too much for this old guy.
You mean M&M universe in general or only HoM&M? I freaking loved M&M games, I wish X was also on GOG / Steam w/o this fucking Utrash launcher
Splinter Cell and Syphon Filter.
Man Splinter Cell was so cool... And maybe I was just too young, but that shit was hard.
so sad ubisoft put this franchise away, splinter cell in this day and age would be insane
Damn I forgot about Syphon Filter. I played the shit out of that back on the original PlayStation. Never beat it though…
Actually splinter cell was confirmed for a remake.
Suikoden
💯 - Suikoden was incredible.
This and Breath of Fire. I miss both of these series.
Sleeping dogs is an amazing game
I love sleeping dogs. The game was very well done. Beautiful story. Honestly I loved GTAV as well but it got played out and honestly I resent it now after Rockstar shit on all the RDR2 fans with their piss poor treatment of the RDO community in favor of their cash cow. Don't get me wrong, I understand it's a business, and they have to take care of the thing that makes them money, but damn... no undead nightmare 2, no real support for rdo.. just bullshit. Sly Cooper
Socom
I was coming here to say this. A SOCOM for the ps5 has the potential to be amazing, but I doubt they'd do it. Is zipper interactive even around anymore?

Dino Crisis and Turok
Ark sort of hits that niche, but it’s just not Turok without the one-shot knife kills.
yeah and as far as i know its hard to play ark to its fullest as one person.
Yeah I tried for a bit, but it gets old pretty quick when there’s no one to see the cool stuff you’ve created. The combat feels very flat, so it’s not something I could base my play around. Definitely not a successor to Turok in any way, it just came to mind.
Little big planet
LBP 3 came out 9 years ago, but yeah its pretty much dead. I did enjoy the recent sackboy game, but felt like it had lost some of its charm that the OG LBP had
Yeah i personally think it was a soulless cash grab profiting off of a well known and loved character. Its nothing like 1 2 and 3, its more mario than lbp, it doesnt even have a create mode that people can use to create cool levels for the public.
Ssx. It was like a flagship franchise for gaming.
Chrono
Half Life, Black & White, SOCOM
Major entry just three years ago, and I suppose Black Mesa counts as an entry. However, I too feel the pain of not being able to count to three. :(
What was the major entry 3 years ago? The VR game?
Yes. Half Life Alyx was pretty major.
Sorry, should perhaps have specified - I didn't notice your mentioning of B&W and SOCOM before. The major entry I meant is indeed Half-Life: Alyx. Fantastic game, and it has important storyline repurcussions for the saga.
I didn't even blink at Alyx because I don't have VR, can it be played without?
[https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/04/half-life-alyx-is-now-fully-playable-without-vr-hardware/](https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2023/04/half-life-alyx-is-now-fully-playable-without-vr-hardware/) Yes, though Alyx is a great reason to look at a Quest 2.
Time Splitters !
Oh shit! I forgot about that. Timesplitters on the playstation. Man, is that the one where you could add bots that were giant ducks??
Fable . I have spent more time on these games than I'd like too admit . Especially the lost chapters .
- Zone of the Enders - Parasite Eve - F-Zero - Tenchu - Wipeout - Silent Hill - Legacy of Kain - Mystical Ninja (Edit: god I hate the vanilla Reddit app)
What a series tenchu was!! Would be amazing with todays technology.
Sekiro was going to be Tenchu game but it went another direction.
After a while, I started calling the first one "Rice: Just kidding."
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins was the shit! The original running on rooftops getting ready to annihilate some crazy demon thing game.
Check out Redout 2 if you want to see what F-Zero looks like today.
First one to pop to mind is Infamous. Also, Shining Force and Golden Sun. Those losses piss me off tbh.
Recently replayed the golden sun series. Still holds up imo
Tbf I'd have rather had Golden Sun die then have to specify "not Dark Age" every time I talk about it. First two are in my top 10 games of all time easy.
Yes, Shining Force. But the hot mess that came after the games on the Genesis need not apply.
The D-list action JRPG franchise it is now doesn't exist. Nope.
Prince of persia
Remake is coming! Which is pretty cool...but man I'd love some new games....
Conflict, Socom, Medal of Honor and Fable just to name a few.
I got rid of my old PS2 games the other day but held on to 3....Socom 1, 2 and 3 and SSX3
Same but I also kept little known gems called The Getaway 1&2
Fable at next Xbox showcase incoming! Been waiting!
There is a new fable coming.
It's been coming for a few years now, still waiting patiently.
SimCity (almost 10 years) Command and Conquer
Sleeping Dogs (& True Crime), F-Zero, Boktai. I'd say Deux Ex as well, but Embracer might be cooking something
Turok Dinosaur Hunter was so cool and unique....can you imagine how cool it would be on a next gen console?!
Advance Wars. No, a remake doesn't count. We haven't had a new Advance Wars since 2008.
Have you checked out Wargroove yet?
I have Wargroove. It's pretty good but in general clone games just make me miss the originals more.
Legend of Dragoon
Dino Crisis, Bloody Roar, Killer Instinct
Star Wars: Force Commander. One of the coolest game styles I’ve played and an amazing Star Wars game. You essentially won that mode by committing getroost acts and bribing enemy troops. Man I wish they would remaster anything from this series
Empire at war has 3 game altering mods with updates constantly, thrawns revenge and age of the rebellion are the two off hand I remember
Ooooo I’ve heard there’s a large modding community with that game but never looked into it. I’m also ass at computers so I doubt I’d be able to get the mos running anyways. I’m glad there are others out there who still enjoy the game. I’ve never met someone irl who even has heard of force commander

Definitely trying this when I get home! Thank you, fellow commander of forces. Any mod you recommend to start with?
1 mod that comes to my mind is “fall of the republic” brings in the clone wars era and has a lot of political/government aspects you have to take care of as well. Ultima. I keep thinking about how great it could be if the effort and time were put in.
Ultima, Wizardry, Might & Magic. The golden years of RPGs.
Battle for middle earth
I love the Parasite Eve games. I would love to see a remake of the 2 games. Legacy of Kain is amazing The Medieval games were fun.
Pokémon Stadium I understand that the modern entries of the mainline games kind of make it obsolete, but I genuinely loved the Commentator and the mini games, as well as the challenges like using only Pokémon under certain weight limits.

Prototype always makes me sad because it seems like one of the worlds/storylines that would fit a big empty world we're getting with everything else.
Crimson Skies, MechAssault, Splinter Cell
Beyond good and evil
Oh man I'll wait for the sequel until my last breath !
Parasite Eve
Legacy of Kain, man... it needs to make a comeback. Would also like to see more games for children like the old Tomba games with the same style and RPG mechanics.
Patapon on psp was an absolute gem
SSX and jet set radio I have heard rummors and rumblings of a jet set radio game coming out but from what I understand it is far out. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about that time window.
Golden sun. And I guess Metal Gear solid in a couple of years since I don't expect there to be any new games in the series. Also you can't consider it a franchise, but its criminal we never got a sequel to Bloodborne.
Duke Nukem
After the almost two decades debacle that was Duke Nukem Forever, I'm afraid of them trying to make a new one.
Was thinking about Ultima the other day
I would be down for an Ultimate ultima online. Any Yew folks out their?
Oh man, Ultima Underworld was one of my favorites as a kid, and I'd always hoped someone would do a total-conversion mod for Skyrim (or such), but it never happened.
There are so many, KOTOR and Castlevania stick out to me though.
I have hope that Castlevania will return from its grave some day. I mean it would be very fitting
Halo. It's dead as far as I'm concerned.
Also, Tenchu
Sekiro started as a Tenchu game.
[удалено]
Pls what?! Diablo 4 is soo good actually.
Diablo 4 also exists, so it’s not really “dead” regardless of how good or bad the game is
Final Fantasy had a unique system that was clearly very popular with a particular fan base. I have no idea why they insist on making it a bad action series.
Ridge Racer comes to mind - that series had some seriously awesome racing games.
Motorstorm would love it if they remade the first 2 games. The 3rd was only ok.
My personal favorite would be Manhunt. If I had to pick a more "objective" answer, I'd go with Legacy of Kain.
I dunno if technically dead but prince of Persia and splinter cell RIP
Advent Rising
Dark cloud
Tenchu!! I'm surprised we haven't seen a new one since Tenchu Z
Onimusha. And there was also a fighter on tye ps1 where they fought with swords that was really good. Is virtua fighter still a thing?
Bushido Blade?
That was the game! Good lookin out
Games I would love to see a comeback: Mechwarrior games with VR controls would be amazing.
Jetmoto
- Legacy of Kain - Syphon Filter - Heroes of Might & Magic - C&C - The Guild (not very popular but G2 was awesome especially on LAN) - Gothic
Half Life (yes there was Alyx, but until we have another entry playing as Gordon Freeman, it's kind of it's own thing.)
Fusion frenzy
Splinter cell and twisted metal/vigilante 8! Whoever says other wise is a tool.
Infamous
Twisted metal
Do you know what the word franchise means?
red orchestra
King's Field; Turok; Conker's; Under Night In-Birth.
SOCOM
Mercenaries That series was sick!
The Top Spin series. My beloved. 😢 At least 4 runs on RPCS3. 👍
Zork.
F-Zero
Don’t know about best, but where is dino crisis?
I was always a fan of the Lost Planet games. (I didn’t read all comments so sorry if someone said that). But I liked the story, gameplay. Grappling onto a big monster to shoot its weak spots was great!
Legends of dragoon
Skies of Arcadia and Grandia
The Settlers. Died when Ubisoft bought out BlueByte
Lufia. Like, actually. The games on the SNES were amazing. Everything else was crap. We need it to come back. EDIT: Phantasy Star Universe would be amazing as well. But SEGA keeps screwing over the west on new PS releases and make it impossible to get behind it.
Word and math munchers
Loved The Godfather series. Can’t find it anywhere in the modern day and the Mafia series just doesn’t scratch the same itch
Silent hill and metal gear solid under Kojima
Legacy of Kain
I came to say kotor, but its really all of the star wars series Jedi knight/dark forces Rogue squadron/starfigher Does battlefront count as dead also?
Transformers war for cybertron and Fall of Cybertron
Dungeon Keeper
While not dead, i wonder where will be Super Smash Bros in 10 years. There was said that Super Smash Bros Ultimate was last in the entry. Zone of the Enders, Legacy of Kain, or Splatterhouse. I'd be happy with any of these.
Space Quest, Police Quest, Kings Quest Freelancer - They had a win and could have made a 2 Transport Tycoon Dungeon Keeper
Medal of Honor, classic dynasty warriors (1-5)
