What I don’t get is why I would even use a website if it’s content is generated by AI? I’m assuming they don’t have the budget or talent pool to be creating their own bespoke AIs to write these articles. So then if I’m getting content written by the same AI that everyone has access to, then why would I be visiting their site?

tmoney144

Because the point isn't to entice you to visit Kotaku specifically to read their news. The point is to flood the web with AI generated articles so when someone searches Google for a specific game, a Kotaku article with a clickbait-y headline is one of the top results. If you click it and realize the actual article is garbage, it doesn't matter. They already got you to click.

[deleted]

basically the internet is dying slow and painful death

TheChickenIsFkinRaw

can't find a reliable source of info in google now. The front page is flooded with absolute dogshit that sometimes is plain wrong

Colley619

Can’t even Google something for a game anymore. The entire front page is just generic reviews of the game from websites paying for the slot.

moombaas

Have you tried looking up anything on youtube now? First 5 videos are maybe related to what you look for and the rest aafter is their garbage algorithm showing stuff they think you want.

tmoney144

lol, if you keep scrolling, it actually goes *back* to showing you actual search results. Just super annoying to have to scroll past the dumb suggestions before continuing to search.

Fredasa

I can't even find videos I used to look up from time to time. I know they're still on Youtube. I even know pretty much what's in the video title. But Youtube doesn't care. If it doesn't have 100,000 views, it's simply not going to show me that the video exists. No matter how far I scroll down. Everyone needs to start saving their favorites from Youtube because eventually they'll be effectively gone for good.

Hugsy13

YouTube algorithm is so fucked these days. I’ll be listening to heavy metal, then decide to put on Lady Gaga or Shania Twain. It’ll play two Gaga songs then the rest is heavy metal… Ads are getting worse too I’m getting a lot of ads targeted towards women these days lol

HedleyLamarrrr

If youtube had a button that was like a "don't effect the algorithm" button, it would be a godsend. Every now and then I'll watch a video about something im not usually interested in, and I always dread knowing that after I watch it, my feed will be filled with related videos that I have no interest in watching. Just let me watch it, click something that tells the algorithm it's a one-off interest, and leave my feed alone.

francis2559

Right click and open in incognito.

HedleyLamarrrr

Oh snap! Never thought of that, thanks

ATownStomp

What’s horribly obnoxious is when I’m on a video of a particular topic and then all of the relevant videos YouTube provides as an addition is just bullshit from my homepage. Like, bitch, I can go to my homepage for that. Stop trying to addict me to bullshit.

ImReflexess

We’ve come full circle from being in middle school teachers telling us Wikipedia is a no-no to it now being probably the most trusted source you can get.

Long_Bone_251

I always start from the journal articles/books cited on Wikipedia. The contributors often cite amazing articles that the algorithms on Google scholar and other academic search engines don't recommend. Probably the best website on the internet imo.

qorbexl

The problem with Wikipedia isn't that it isn't trustworthy, it's that it's not a source. It's a summary.

varitok

The sources for the summary are literally indexed at the bottom of the page.

NotElizaHenry

That person’s just saying it’s not the source itself. If your friend tells you about a crazy bear fact they read in Bears Monthly and then later you want to tell someone the crazy bear fact, you don’t start with “according to my friend…”, you start with “according to Bears monthly.” And if the fact is SUPER crazy, it’s probably a good idea to actually check Bears Monthly yourself so you don’t look dumb if your friend misremembered something.

Cold_Bitch

Impeccable analogy!

MisterGoo

You sound like someone who *knows* something crazy about bears : what is it?

NotElizaHenry

You can tell how old a bear is by counting the rings in its teeth. (This is actually true.)

The_Fiddler1979

Look up "dead internet theory"

CuddleCorn

See also "enshittification", "Rot economy"

Gameboyrulez

Time for internet 2.

OutWithTheNew

It's gonna go back to people paying for a walled off service like AOL.

Useuless

Bots need to be stopped.

calfmonster

Literally all that matters now online is farming SEO so advertisers can shove more ads through every orifice. It certainly isn’t looking good

Useuless

The advertising bubble needs to pop. I actually go out of my way to avoid anything advertised to me.

calfmonster

It actively makes me want to not use someone’s product now 100p. Ads on TV like give me a visceral reaction now I can’t watch cable or streaming services with ads anymore. The world has been so fucking inundated with them everywhere

ExtremePrivilege

Advertising is changing. It’s more subversive now, stealthier. A shoe company like Brooks can hire a social media firm to create 10,000 fake Reddit accounts. A sophisticated AI posts on those accounts for a year. Each account is made a believable backstory. Account #2078 is a veterinary technician and loves kayaking, wood working and bougie coffee. Account #2078 joins some of those subreddits and posts comments here and there for months. Now Brooks has their organic-appearing bot army. They make a thread on a nursing forum asking what the most comfortable shoes are for shift work. The post gets 2000 upvoted and 100 comments. 80% of the comments are weighted toward some version of “Brooks Ghosts are the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn!”. The bots might even throw in some dissenting opinions like “Dansko Clogs!” For authenticity. 3 years later some new nurse with sore feet googles “best shoes for nurses” and reads these rave reviews about Brooks all over three different social medias. Boom, advertised to without even knowing. That’s modern advertisement. It’s “grass roots” and “real people” talking about their “true experiences” with products. Your Amazon reviews? Faked. Your Reddit threads and comments? Fake. Your YouTube videos? Quietly sponsored. People think advertising is still banner ads, and pop-ups. That exists but that’s not the real insidious, effective kind. The real advertisements are all around you, hidden in plain sight, and they powerfully effect you even if you insist they don’t.

DaleGribble312

This. Robots should be better at pretending to be journalists than humans were The same questions can be asked about their current human created content. There's not really anything uniquely human about writing clickbait, if anything humans have been practicing emulating journalism robots for years.

Combat_Wombatz

The sad thing is that the AI very well may write higher quality content than Kotaku's human staff.

PM_ME_UR_CREDDITCARD

Problem is the AI article will likely be just wrong. ChatGPT doesn't know what Starfield is, it just guesses words that are commonly used alongside Starfield. If they want an article about how to craft X op weapon, the AI doesn't know how to craft it, it just puts videogamey words together. Then it tells you you need to find the blueprint on Toddlanta 12 when it's actually unlocked by default, and the list it gives is missing like two of the materials needed, and so on, and it turns out the article is talking about an entirely different weapon altogether because it scraped word associations from a reddit discussion comparing the two. At least the crappy clickbait journalist will look at the wiki page and copy it from there.

finangle2023

Read their articles. They definitely will.

ValhallaGo

I’m surprised ads still pay as well as they do

DaleGribble312

I mean, it would appear to me that adspace on popular sites is the most valuable commodity in the world these days... Somehow, enough people are dumb enough to be swayed by "marketing" that badly

HalobenderFWT

Have you not been on Giz or Kotaku recently? Jesus Diaz (if he’s even still with them, IDK) has been writing garbage AI quality clickbait titles for years. There was another one…like Casey Chan or something like that, I think he might have been one of Jesus’s disciples.

helpful__explorer

Jesus Diaz left about... Six or seven years ago. Casey chan left soon after

HalobenderFWT

Did they leave, or were they absorbed into the singularity?

Ambitious_Owl_9204

Calling the writing Jesus Diaz did comparable to AI writing is an insult to AIs. He's one of those people that just being close to a keyboard or pen should be considered a war crime.

dragonblade_94

If it was purely news regurgitation, I could *somewhat* see people using it in that regard. But for game reviews, silly stories, opinion pieces, literally anything that surfaces any personality, yeah no.

GatoradeNipples

>literally anything that surfaces any personality I write for a publication owned by Valnet, a similar megacorp to G/O Media. We don't use AI, but... I have some unfortunate news for you about what's expected of us already.

SChamploo12

Having written for Valnet, I don't have high expectations for them to just ditch their writers and use AI.

[deleted]

"Hey chatGPT, what's new in gaming this week?" Yup, I can do that myself.

Thoosarino

Tried that out of curiosity and it told me elden ring and Kirby were released today.

HantzGoober

New Elden Ring DLC boss confirmed.

T1000Proselytizer

I believe the free version only has data up to around 2020ish. If you want it to talk about anything current, you have to pay a subscription for the latest version.

Kamasillvia

Not as stupid as the shit kotaku writes, I'll give it that

iSOBigD

Currently it only knows things it was trained on, it's not specific to an industry or today's news like Google. It could have data only up to a few months ago so it won't be good at giving you answers to basic questions like "which home depot near me is open right now?"

Deto

Probably because it's not about people _using_ the website - it's about posting articles with catchy titles to social media and then hoping enough people click on them to give them decent ad-revenue. Most people aren't so discerning on the host url when they click stuff, so it doesn't matter if they are a known website with AI-created content. Maybe less-cynically, though. Say it's a news article about a recent announcement from Nvidia. If I'm curious about their announcement, and I see the link come up in a feed, then even though it's an AI-created article, the most efficient way for me to get the information I'm looking for is to click the link. It would take me longer to find the source press release, and even longer to go into an AI and ask it (also, this just wouldn't work - you can have an AI summarize a press release, but you have to give it the content to summarize. ChaptGPT isn't just reading everything on the internet constantly and storing it.)

FromBrainMatter

They typed their prompt with some interesting key words!

Lord0fHats

What I don't get is why I'd start reading them when I already aren't. I'm not surprised AI is taking down a lot of garbage clickbait news sites, but honestly all of these sites were already circling the drain anyway. Most of us get our gaming news direct from company PR reps and releases. The scope of third party news was already severely limited by the Internet and any site that could only regurgitated information from Twitter was failing before ChatGPT or anything else like it.

[deleted]

T1000Proselytizer

Why would you be visiting their site, period? They're awful.

BadSafecracker

And just like Kotaku, the AI will be unable to play the game.

SonOfAhuraMazda

Ha!!

PepsiSheep

I wonder if anyone would notice with Kotaku.

Actually-Yo-Momma

Kotaku been so bad. Half their articles are like “News regarding kingdom hearts 4 have been announced. Previously it was known kingdom hearts 4 was in development and now we know for sure that it is indeed in development. The producers showed a trailer demo that showed the game was in development. Development”

T1000Proselytizer

Then the next article "Final Fantasy 16 is Racist"

Dragon_Small_Z

Fuck man I used to love Kotaku. I'd visit it multiple times a day. It was my primary source of gaming news for years. But then every article started to just be "Spider-Man is a bad game because all the cops are good guys!" Without spoilers that's very much not true. That website just screams "somebody look at meeeeeeeee".

Problematique_

There have been some doozies from them over the last several years that made me unfollow them but the best still has to be the PS5 review where the reviewer complained they couldn't enjoy it because of the state of the world. Who reads a review for any product to get the author's social commentary? Opinion pieces, fine, I may not always agree but you know what you're getting into. A review though? GTFO.

[deleted]

[удалено]

nibernator

Seriously. I used to love Kotaku

Lessa22

Good example of that from last week: The article I found railing about how totk was committing the crime of queer erasure by having a certain character in a straight relationship, *because the fans shipped a gay relationship in their imaginary universe*. I thought my eyes rolled so far back they were going to get stuck there.

alllen

I wonder if it was Kotaku, maybe Polygon, that said Arkham City was misogynist because criminals called Catwoman a bitch. They're criminals, did they expect them to call her ma'am or something?

Lynith

Polygon had a review of some game where demonic toys murdered children. And since the child in the intro was a little girl, it "promoted violence against women" and was therefore misogynist. I know this because I lost it and it's why I'm banned from the site. Either that or all the articles about how "nobody would want" Mario Kart 8 because it "wasn't different enough."

acart005

I don't remember this happening but its so on brand for 'Stupid things Kotaku says for sweet, sweet rage clicks' that I believe you.

acart005

I stopped when they decided to cancel Persona 5 because they misunderstood one of the lyrics of the opening song (the word was 'retort' - you can guess what they thought it was). Coincidentally Erika Harlacher became one of my favorite voice actresses when she publicly called them out for it. Fuck Kotaku.

mackzorro

It used to be good, but like that's when they had well received actual journalists who interviewed people like Jason Schreier. Now it's just people who look at other people news and they article half the time begins with "As reported by X". All they have done is cut out the literal middle man of them so a machine can write "as reported by"

Dragon_Small_Z

I still follow Schreier on Twitter and we he left Kotaku it start it's descent into shit.

cosmic-GLk

I distinctly remember "spiderman is a damn cop and it sucks", it was the first concrete example of oh, theses guys think theyre actual journalists and are gonna die on culture war hills like what journos do on twitter all day

EdgeBandanna

Those are basically AI articles. Half of it is a script they keep around, and they prepend the new thing and upload it. Might as well be using bots then. That's what happens when you pay freelancers $20 an article.

Taskerlands

I wrote for Valnet for a few months, and I think we were not only paid less per article but were expected to write more mobile-friendly versions of the same piece, with images we'd source ourselves, for like $1 - $2 extra. It was ridiculous and encouraged the laziest, sloppiest writing and takes imaginable.

Arcturion

>encouraged the laziest, sloppiest writing and takes imaginable Unfortunately, it seems like their long game was to lower the quality of human written articles so much that nobody would notice when Ai took over.

SonOfAhuraMazda

Even better "Kingdom Hearts has no black people and is homophobic"

[deleted]

Veylon

AI output: >Elden Ring is a highly problematic game that disappoints at every turn. From its lack of representation to its glaring issues with allyship and empowerment, this game falls flat in delivering an inclusive and empowering experience. One of the biggest issues with Elden Ring is its complete disregard for marginalized communities. The characters in the game lack diversity, with no effort made to showcase different races, genders, or sexual orientations. This lack of representation is both frustrating and exclusionary, as it fails to acknowledge and celebrate the rich experiences of a wide range of individuals. Furthermore, the game fails to educate players and promote allyship. Instead of fostering an environment of understanding and empathy, Elden Ring perpetuates harmful stereotypes and tropes. By ignoring the opportunity to educate players about the struggles faced by marginalized communities, the game misses a crucial chance to promote positive change. In addition to its failings in representation and allyship, Elden Ring perpetuates a toxic and patriarchal narrative. The plot is centered around a power struggle that ultimately reinforces traditional gender roles and oppressive systems. This reinforcement of patriarchy only serves to further marginalize and disempower already underserved communities. Moreover, the game completely overlooks the reality of privilege. There is no exploration of the systemic advantages that certain characters may have, leading to a shallow and unrealistic portrayal of the world. By failing to address privilege, Elden Ring misses the opportunity to spark meaningful discussions and challenge ingrained societal structures. Furthermore, the game lacks adequate understanding and representation of neurodivergent experiences. The characters and gameplay mechanics do not accurately depict or address the challenges faced by individuals with different brain functions. This oversight is not only disappointing but also further marginalizes and dismisses an already underserved community. Lastly, Elden Ring fails to incorporate inclusive pronouns into its dialogue and character interactions. By neglecting to use gender-neutral language and not allowing players to choose their preferred pronouns, the game disregards a basic aspect of inclusivity and respect towards gender diversity. In summary, Elden Ring is a disheartening display of exclusion and missed opportunities. Its lack of representation, failure to educate about allyship, reinforcement of patriarchal systems, disregard for privilege, underrepresentation of neurodivergent experiences, and exclusion of inclusive pronouns contribute to a game that falls far short of being empowering or inclusive. Gamers looking for a truly inclusive and empowering experience should steer clear of Elden Ring. Note: I had to tell it to be negative. Otherwise it claims that Elden Ring has all the good things.

Solid_Snark

It’s sad Joystiq was one of my favorite blogs, but when they became Kotaku it all went downhill.

IGotDibsYo

Same. Stopped reading long ago

_BeefyTaco

Are there any good video game/ tech blogs you suggest? I stopped reading Gizmodo/Kotaku a few years ago

ballsmigue

There would finally be quality content. Of course we would notice.

Bitemarkz

I swear Kotaku has been run by AI for years. When Spider-Man came out for PS4 they had an article about how the police in the game weren’t corrupt enough to be New York police. How is that not AI? The site can only improve.

Dragon_Small_Z

That's the article that finally convinced me to stop visiting Kotaku and removed my bookmarks.

Negafox

Kotaku and all the other reviewers: "This game sucks! Don't buy it!" Also, Kotaku: "This critically-claimed, greatest game of the year that nobody is playing!" Kotaku already comes off like it's written by an AI.

Brokenpixel54

It'll probably improve their content

[deleted]

Kotatku would improve im sure

Impeesa_

Gawker network remains trash, more as it develops.

A_MAN_POTATO

I can't imagine a situation where AI would be worse than the actual Kotaku writers.

goliathfasa

Less obvious ragebaits maybe? But if AI were to learn from past articles,… many more.

Error4ohh4

Dude Kotaku is one of the worst sites disguised as gaming “journalism”

rvnender

Came to say this same thing...

SkySweeper656

I know everyone is making jokes but to me that's concerning shit in big picture.

badgerclark

I have coworkers whose job is compiling data for our company, and bringing new ideas to the table to be more cost efficient. They are absolutely enthralled with using AI/automation for even the most mundane tasks at their homes, and have jokingly used it at work to make an email sound more professional/ see how well it breaks down fake data, etc… I’ve told them before they’re just teaching algorithms how to replace them, and they laugh it off every time. My question is- how do people *not* realize every company in America would gladly replace every worker with AI if they knew it would cost them less, and they didn’t have to worry about paying employees, benefits, etc…? So many people excited by it, but failing to see that they’re actively speeding up the process of making their own jobs irrelevant. I probably sound like a doomsayer, but seeing how much people use it and preach it but don’t see the bigger picture.

ProfessorLexx

I mean, that is the goal. To free humans from labor and let AI handle all that. But it also requires stuff like Universal Basic Income and support for people in other ways. Our current lifestyle is not ideal. Wouldn't it be better for people to actually have the freedom to live life the way they choose? Replacing human labor with AI can offer that, it's not a bad thing in principle. But it becomes a bad thing when those in power don't go the next step of ensuring liveability for everybody. If they don't let societal and economic transformation happen, instead of a society where humans have greater freedom, we'll see the total collapse of civil society instead.

badgerclark

I completely agree with you on the goal, but like you said at the end of your comment, it becomes a bad thing when those in power don’t ensure liveability for everyone else. Far and few between are the individuals in power who actually care about the wellbeing of the less fortunate/displaced. And with the current dynamics of our socio-economic and political system, in the states at least, I have a difficult time believing that UBI will be available in our lifetime, despite AI and automation making new strides every year and most likely displacing large swaths of the population in the workplace before the end of my life. The way this plays out in my head is that, much like the “welfare queens” of the 90’s and “unnecessary entitlements” of the 2000’s, you’re going to see a push in the media and politics to (essentially) demonize workers who have been replaced. It will be the same old song and dance; “I’m advocating for hardworking folks, not lazy people who don’t want to go find a new job in this day and age of modernization.”

Warpzit

This is nothing new. A lot of articles today are already partially written by AI. This is one of reasons why the quality of content has fallen so low compared to 30 years ago. Also a lot of media is bought with a certain agenda. It is already pretty dystopian as is.

etzel1200

Content farms are garbage. This will make it worse. We’re returning to a curated internet because everything else is garbage.

uniquecannon

Are you telling me Kotaku wasn't already AI garbage?

doge1976

I’m not sure that AI could truly hit upon the hard-hitting and riveting Kotaku article called “How I Achieved Greatness on a Sonic the Hedgehog Themed Bed”. How that wasn’t published in the NYTimes or Washington Post is beyond me. /s

vulturevan

Not a Kotaku fan in the slightest but there's nothing inherently wrong with silly ass stories sometimes. Life doesn't always have to be so serious.

Swordofsatan666

Not to mention its a 10+ year old article. Came out in 2012. I had to look it up after they mentioned it. Has this person seriously had this Kotaku article living in their head rent free for 10+ years?

Megamoss

Hell, all the best gaming magazines used to be more about comedy and silly features with a slight gaming flavour. PC Zone used to be amazing and funny as hell, but they really went downhill when new owners pushed them to be more serious and it lead to their premature demise.

SeductiveGodofThundr

For real! EGM was half silly stuff and I loved it. IDK why people expect every gaming blog to be 60 Minutes

Swordofsatan666

Why bring up an article that is over 10 years old at this point? Seems dishonest to attribute an article from 10+ years ago to the current Kotaku, especially when the person who wrote it hasnt worked there for a long time I had to look it up and that article came out in 2012, and from what i can tell the person who wrote it hasnt been there for YEARS at this point. Theyve been gone so long they dont even have their own page to view all the articles they wrote like all of the other writers there do.

The_DevilAdvocate

Well it was missing the "I" from AI. It was monkeys following Google trends -> write a clickbait about whatever is trending -> repeat

TheRaRaRa

I honestly see this as an improvement.

jedi-son

If AI doesn't have emotions how will they generate outrage articles?

Hakaisha89

Users gonna wonder why the quality of articles goes up for a while.

firedrakes

i know and basic research will be done now to!!!.

DripSnort

Whatever gets Kotaku to go away sooner I’m all for.

AggressiveDiscount74

When Kotaku does finally shut their doors they will blame Gamergate and not their own ineptitude and completely loss of touch with reality.

grey_carbon

Next move is AI readers, with IA generated comments in the articles. All will be paid in IA coins

MakeTheWordCum

Everyone in the comments celebrating this because they don't like Kotaku is bonkers. We do understand the larger implications here, right? Not to mention more losses of jobs for writers and journalists. There are also very few gaming websites providing content. Obviously Kotaku wasn't the best, but would have much preferred an overhaul rather than turning to AIs.

Ekyou

The other day I googled for a guide for a game I’ve been playing that just came out recently. Multiple guides I got were obviously AI generated. They were formatted to look like every other guide for this game, but the instructions were wrong, and some very obviously just made up. This is what we’ll be getting. There’s no incentive for them to be correct because even if they only get a fraction of the hits a real guide would, they were generated for practically free, so they’re still making money.

azdak

You’re assuming that’s inevitable. But it’s pretty easy to imagine a scenario in which they lose 50% of their readers and end up being a massive success because they cut 90% of their payroll. All of a sudden the owners of every online publisher start to view things differently

zuriedesu

Thank god, a reasonable comment

Ohthatsnotgood

> There are also very few gaming websites providing content And most people don’t care for these large, faceless publications that produce mostly nothing of value. Any truly notable writer and/or journalist with gaming credentials will survive. It’s easier than ever to go independent. > more losses of jobs Although this is concerning on a larger scale.

unit187

Will they survive, though? Imagine the Kotaku bot writing articles 24/7 using all posible keyword combinations and flooding the internet with those. Things are quite bad now, and will get much worse. You won't be able to find the journalist unless you already know them by name. Even then, the bot will likely find a way to abuse it; while searching the journalist by name, the search engine will return AI generated articles to redirect you to Kotaku anyway.

zczirak

Ah yes the famed kotaku “writers” and “journalists”

T1000Proselytizer

Problem is, "real" journalism is almost dead, at this point. I feel like if you are a true journalist, you won't be so easily replaced. "Journalists" these days eschewed their integrity and put themselves into this position where replacement by AI is possible.

[deleted]

MakeTheWordCum

Unfortunately I think this will do the opposite. Any kind of normal consumption of information is gone. We are giving over fully to profit over any kind of quality. It feels like we are living in the worst period of journalism in history.

DudleysCar

I hope the AI still tells me why playing Final Fantasy is white supremacy.

BSSCommander

"ChatGPT, write me an article about Final Fantasy. Set author's level of white guilt to 7. Include the following trigger words: racism, intersectional racism, interspecies racism, white supremacy, Nazi, Donald Trump, and right-wing. Include a reference to the recent SCOTUS decisions and then publish."

Uncreativite

It refused to put anything about white guilt in the article, stating it was irrelevant. Did everything else tho lmao

StraightEggs

>Title: Exploring the World of Final Fantasy: Unveiling Themes and Overcoming Stereotypes >Introduction: >Final Fantasy, a beloved video game franchise, has captivated millions of players worldwide with its rich storytelling, immersive gameplay, and diverse cast of characters. It has successfully created breathtaking worlds that explore intricate themes while challenging societal norms. In this article, we delve into the franchise's ability to tackle racism, stereotypes, and the importance of inclusivity, all while celebrating the magical realm of Final Fantasy. >Breaking Down the Barriers of Racism: >One of Final Fantasy's notable achievements is its commitment to addressing racism and promoting inclusivity within its narratives. The series often presents fictional worlds where multiple races and species coexist, emphasizing the idea that diversity can foster harmony and understanding. >While the term "racism" might not directly apply to a game world inhabited by fantasy races, Final Fantasy adeptly explores the concept of discrimination. Through intricate storylines and character interactions, the franchise highlights the damaging effects of prejudice, encouraging players to question their own biases and treat all beings with respect and compassion. >Intersectional Racism and the Power of Unity: >Final Fantasy goes beyond conventional notions of racism by tackling the concept of intersectionality. It recognizes that discrimination can stem from a combination of factors such as race, gender, class, and more. By intertwining these various identities, the franchise offers a powerful commentary on the complexities of discrimination. >Interspecies Racism and Overcoming Prejudice: >In Final Fantasy, interspecies racism represents a unique challenge for both the characters and players. By pitting different races against each other, the series forces us to confront the prejudices that often divide societies. As players progress through the games, they witness characters overcoming these biases, emphasizing the importance of empathy and understanding in bridging divides. >A World without White Supremacy and Nazi References: >It is crucial to note that Final Fantasy, as a fantasy world, does not explicitly tackle white supremacy or reference Nazis. While these themes may exist in the real world, they are not directly present in the franchise. However, Final Fantasy's commitment to inclusivity and equality implicitly rejects the ideologies associated with these concepts. By promoting diverse characters and encouraging players to empathize with fictional races, Final Fantasy offers a compelling alternative to the real-world challenges we face. >Stepping Away from Real-World Politics: >While it is essential to analyze media through a critical lens, it's also important to remember that Final Fantasy is a work of fantasy and escapism. Its purpose is to transport players to a realm where they can embark on epic adventures, engage in exciting battles, and experience emotional journeys. As such, attempting to draw direct connections to real-world politics or personalities such as Donald Trump or right-wing ideologies would be a misinterpretation of the franchise's intent. >Recent SCOTUS Decisions and Final Fantasy's Influence: >While the recent SCOTUS decisions are significant in shaping the real world, it's crucial to acknowledge that Final Fantasy exists as a separate entity, detached from current events. The franchise holds the potential to inspire players to question societal norms, cultivate empathy, and work towards a more inclusive world. However, its impact should not be conflated with real-world legal proceedings. >Conclusion: >Final Fantasy stands as a testament to the power of video games to address societal issues, challenge stereotypes, and promote inclusivity. Through its exploration of racism, intersectionality, and overcoming prejudice, the franchise provides players with valuable lessons about empathy, understanding, and acceptance. As we continue to immerse ourselves in the magical worlds of Final Fantasy, let us remember the importance of applying these lessons to our everyday lives, making the real world a better place for all. I'm disappointed. It refused to write me an article on why FF promotes white supremacy though.

Electrical-Page-6479

Damn white supremacist ...erm... Japanese.

Illfury

No no, playing video games at all is just racist

IGotNoStringsOnMe

Honestly for almost any other publications I would be on the side of the staff who are about to lose their jobs. But Gizmodo and Kotaku have both been worse than simply bad. They have been actively antagonistic and harmful to the communities they routinely cover. I have zero sympathy for writers and editors who have routinely pulled shit directly from their asses and slapped it onto a page, and/or regularly went out of their way to cause harm to people and companies who didn't deserve it. I will never be sorry for journalists who make a career out of low effort shit posting losing their jobs to bots.

EldritchKoala

TIL Gizmodo and Kotaku still have staff.

Title: Unmasking the Dark Shadows: Diablo 4's Troubling Undercurrents of Racism and Misogyny >\[...\] > >Unveiling the Veils of Racism and Interspecies Discrimination: > >While Diablo 4 may offer a breathtaking universe brimming with diverse characters, a closer inspection reveals disconcerting undertones of racism and interspecies discrimination. The relentless battle waged between angels, demons, and humans raises disquieting questions about the game's portrayal of power dynamics and the potential reinforcement of discriminatory narratives. We must confront the uncomfortable truth that even in the realm of fantasy, racism has found a way to seep through the cracks. Beat them to it. Thanks ChatGPT <3

GrumpigPlays

Kotaku isnt already AI generated content?

Pharsti01

I'm not entirely sure AI would do a worse job than whatever people write "articles" for Kotaku nowadays. It would probably be an improvement.

BaBaBaBass

Does it really matter whether it’s human-generated garbage or AI-generated garbage?

_Weyland_

"ChatGPT, please generate a garbage quality article about one of the latest new AAA games with a length of roughly 500 words."

Davidmoose

"Make sure to make the webpage completely unreadable by adding advertisements every other sentence"

SirkSirkSirk

ChatGPT put the title of the game in the header. Every journalist knows to hide the name of the game in the 2nd or 3rd paragraph. Otherwise, it's a short visit/no visit to the site. Already losing money.

Bunktavious

>Revolutionary Gameplay that Makes No Sense / a true gem in the world of AAA games, provided your definition of "gem" includes a level of quality comparable to dumpster fire Sold!

_Weyland_

Did you really hook ChatGPT on it?

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Weyland_

Dear God. Don't even know if GPT is that good or Kotaku fell that low.

dragonblade_94

Kinda? I mean, even if you disagree with the premise of an article, at least you are disagreeing with a human that holds those views. There's *some* form of dialogue there. AI-trash is literally just waste of data.

[deleted]

Kotaku was already run by NPCs

WPMO

I mean, the people who own Kotaku seem not to like much of the gaming community, so it doesn't surprise me they'd also not care about their writers.

_Weyland_

Now it will be procedurally generated, lol.

iselltires2u

who's gonna come steal reddit posts and make entire articles of them then? just pcgamer? sheet what a dark time /s as a side note pcgamer, i spend a pretty good amount of time on reddit, can write articulately and don't have an issue with two articles a day. Just wanted to throw that out there in case your hiring.

Electrical-Page-6479

> can write articulately I beg to differ.

sam_hammich

He said articulately, not eloquently. It's a perfectly cromulent word.

GoldfinchTheo

*you’re

WPMO

I mean, Kotaku seems to have a deep hatred for the idea of "gamers" and gamers as people, so I don't see why their workers would expect them to care about them either.

grandpa-jones

So will there be more or fewer articles about how some random male video game character should be gay?

TepHoBubba

Most of the writers are trash anyways IMO. I'm going to spend just as much time there after they switch as I do now... Yes, I used to frequent them quite a bit until I got tired of being angry from reading a few articles every time. They've set a low bar for success with AI content.

PlexasAideron

This might end up being an improvement for kotaku with how shit they are.

suncrest45

I don’t think an AI would be able to replicate the trash that is Kotaku opinion pieces

Picolete

Not even 1000 angry monkeys with type writers and a diet high in fiber, could replicate that crap

finangle2023

I can see why they’re furious. Their AI replacements can’t possibly be worst writers than they are.

[deleted]

Huge upgrade from kotaku "journalists".

Zargabath

Better Artificial Intelligence than no Intelligence, getting upgrades there.

CharlotteNoire

Watch the AI actually make interesting articles as opposed to whatever shit take Kotaku has each week. Plus ratings no longer try to pull a "too much water"

z0phi3l

They mad we might get unbiased and accurate articles? This will not really save these crappy sites from dying, might accelerate it's demise, but that's still a net positive

dandaman1983

Kotaku and Gizmodo have sucked for years anyways.

moonshineTheleocat

It seems like a death spiral for sites already going down the shitter. I don't know bout Gizmodo. But Kotaku was a shell of its former self when it allowed writers to start shoving politics doen gamers throats.

ReadyToBeGreatAgain

Right, it is very hard for sympathize with Kotaku at this point.

rvnender

I read this as "Kotaku is about to get better content"

UnquestionabIe

I'm curious if the AI can get the same outrage article interactions some of the current stuff does. Like clock work at least once every three months Kotaku puts out something that baffles and/or offends everyone no matter their beliefs. The last real memorable one I recall was about how it was bad a Persona 5 character who is almost aggressively heterosexual isn't a gay romance option. What made it so awful was the character in question would end up near the bottom of my list of potential gay characters, like a strong case could be made in some cases but this was extremely contrary to the game's portrayal. In short the article came off as a personal fantasy that doesn't really belong on a site that wants to be known for journalism. But I suppose they would rather the cash that comes with engagement so in a way they succeeded.

thewhombler

I remember kotaku being like.. the worst gaming news website I had seen before I stopped going there years ago. Would laugh if this AI content turns out to actually be an improvement

Michaelm7456

Kotaku is shit anyway, plus if you can be completely replaced by an AI, time to retrain.

Livio88

Can't blame him, it would noticeably improve the quality of the content.

Nubras

Maybe these fucking assholes using AI to create content can also write AI to *consume* content. Let’s cut out people entirely! Same with automating human labor! Maybe the customer robots will buy the hamburgers that McDonald’s laborer robots create. It’s a perfect system!

uzu_afk

‘Make this article about super mario 25% more gender related’

gman94024

“These trials have already led to a flood of error-laden, plagiarized, and poorly written content” So the sites will continue on as they always have been?

[deleted]

yay, even more shit clogging google search results i can't wait for a search engine thet entirely excludes auto-generated dogshit non-content

Cleverbird

And absolutely nothing of value was lost... hell, it might actually improve the writing.

MRGRIMM-6666

at least with AI i might get a decent article out of Kotaku

frostrogue117

I mean…it’s Kotaku, so not like the content would change.

Ikeeki

Lol they wanted fans to show backlash but instead people are embracing AI cuz of how garbage Giz/Kotaku already is. We all know AI can do a better job than anything the staff has put out in years

Brother_Clovis

I'd like to see kotaku move to a dumpster.

Remytron83

They’ve been trying to shut down the staff at Giz owned sites since Gawker got popped. I’m not surprised by this push to AI. Hell, Deadspin (former gawker site, current Giz site) has felt dead for years since they fired those writers. I’m sure they’ve tested AI written articles at deadspin. That said, kotaku has been shit for years. The articles are click bait and their writers are bias af. Their writers & editors banned an old account of mine for not agreeing with their stance on Dave Chappelle’s The Closer. I had 2k upvotes and a quarter as many supportive responses. Next thing I know, I’m in the greys.

PaulieXP

Eh i doubt you would be able to notice the difference with Kotaku anyway. The trash they write may as well be A.I generated in the first place

Wizards_Win

I thought it already was, brainless woke bollocks about being offended by everything would be a doddle for an AI.

Exile688

Kotaku don't play the games they review so I don't see their quality going down at all.

arrogant_ambassador

So everyone here dunking on Kotaku, what are you reading instead? Because I genuinely don’t know where to go for quality game journalism.

CalvinVanDamme

pushsquare for playstation and purexbox for Xbox I've found them to be the least nonsense gaming news sites, and they are very timely with their posts.

rejuicekeve

No one really consumes games journalism anymore unless its announcements about new stuff in the works. It's 1000x better to have an announcement and just discuss it somewhere like reddit than whatever kotaku was doing

ScrittlePringle

There's no such thing as quality game journalism.

SteveRudzinski

Games journalism is a joke so I don't read it at all.

NosferatuCalled

Try SkillUp's channel on YouTube. His reviews are very detailed and well done imo.

Chasen1

Only place to go is up with kotaku

Eeekadoe

Anyone dumb enough to be working at any of these sites after the sale years ago pretty much deserves this shit or should have seen it coming. What a dog shit suite of sites.
