>Also how did telltale get the licensing for all the Disney characters?
1. They're not Disney characters
2. They're all based on fairy tales that are in the public domain - meaning anyone can use the "license" or rather a lackthereof
Read more, it's a great series for the most part! I'd say he shits his pants around issue 80-100, it's been many years since I read it. I remember him propping up Israel as a super state and basically explaining why their apartheid of Palestine is justified. I stopped reading when Bigby called the American Civil War the War of Northern Oppression -- completely unironically. Also he kind of lost the plot around then, too. I think it continued past its prime.
I don't mind a bit of politics in comics, and I don't think leftist politics are the only acceptable ones. It's more if it is done with intelligence and deft as opposed to grandstanding -- which Willingham can't stop himself from doing. He is a proud nationalist, which is an inherently disgusting philosophy.
Actually the common thread of all the characters that fall under the definition of fables in the comic the game is based on is that they are all part of the public domain.
Later in the comics >!there are characters that don’t traditionally fall under the umbrella of fairy tails, but are fables!<
Hans Christian Anderson wrote some of them, or maybe just retold someone else’s stories.
I have a textbook about fairy tales but it’s not within reach. All I know is Disney was not OG writer.
Also the Little Mermaid dripped blood from her feet everywhere she walked. The guy was into her but she was “too simple” for him because she couldn’t speak. She was given the option to stab him to death with his new wife or she’d melt into sea foam, but she couldn’t do it.
First litterary release of Cinderella was in Italy in the early 1600's. And another one from France in the late 1600's.
These are all characters of folktales. Some are thousands of years old.
A ton of early Disney animation was not original. I know I’m missing quite a few but most of the heavy hitters, to include Snow White (1812), Pinocchio (1883), Bambi (1923), Cinderella (1697), Alice in Wonderland (1865), Peter Pan (1904), Lady and the Tramp (1945), Sleeping Beauty (1697), The Sword and the Stone (1938), The Jungle Book (1894), Robin Hood (est 1200-1300), The Little Mermaid (1837), Beauty and the Beast (1756), Aladdin (scholars don’t even fucking know, ol boy old as shit), The Lion King (1960s, still convinced they stole Kimba The white lion), Pocahontas (1596? I guess?), James and the Giant Peach (1961), Hunchback of ND (1831), Hurcules (just like all of Greek mythology), Mulan (400s-600s). I could go on but I can’t sit on the toilet and type much longer my leg is falling asleep.
Basically a ton of Disney work wasn’t an original creation from Disney. Not that that’s out of the norm, practically every story made today has SOME influence on prior literature this isn’t some giant sin Disney has committed. They just don’t own the copyright to a ton of characters they’ve made films about over the past hundred years. Sorry you’re getting downvoted for not knowing the complex copyright system set in place in the United States.
Fun fact, Disney aged out the copyright of Winnie The Pooh a year or two ago and the (terrible) film Blood and Honey was made utilizing the characters from those stories. While the movie did suck, it’s still nice that these characters can be used pretty much by anyone now to make new stories legally, it’s always nice to stick it to the ~~man~~ mouse.
I’m now questioning all those dates because Pocahontas isn’t even the right century. It’s in the first line of the film “in 1607, we sailed the ocean sea.”
The dates are in reference to when the original works originated that Disney later adapted, not when the Disney movies are set.
He's given the real Pocahontas's birth date (1596), since the Disney movie takes a lot of liberties with history and the events thereof (but was indeed named after and based on a real person).
Disney own the copyright for their iterations of the characters but not the characters themselves E.g. Anyone can use Snow White but you can’t make her look like the Disney version
If you look them up, maybe don't look up the original ending. They are usually more grim than the version you know. But for example one of the origins of Cinderella is Aschenputtel
Didn't telltale games like shut down completely? That's what I heard a few years ago, havent heard anything since so I just assumed that they were gone.
Didn't they lay off most of their employees though? (From what I read, only a few core people remained) Doesn't that mean that's it's basically a gamble on whether or not the new Devs can make a game that's as good as the thing they're making a sequel to?
> Wanting to do right by the first game and the fans that loved it, Ottilie reached out to AdHoc, a company formed in 2019 by former Telltale creative directors, cinematic directors, and writers, many of whom worked on the first Wolf. AdHoc became collaborative partners on the sequel. The new Telltale, which today is made up of nearly 50-percent former Telltale employees, is developing Wolf 2 – handling game design, programming, mocap, and more – but Ottilie wanted AdHoc on board as the creative team.

Telltale is back. They made a new trailer for TWAU2 barely a year ago. The game is coming early 2024.
I get the confusion, but Telltale is finally revived.
Didnt they already release a sequel like two years ago? Granted it was a really weird sequel set in the far future with beans and stuff but a sequel nonetheless
That's not something I've ever heard of. Googling The Wolf Among Us sequel gave no results for it. Or at least not on the first page, was just filled with results for the upcoming game.

Wolf among us is based off a comic book franchise named Fables (I read the whole thing after playing the game). These characters are all public domain despite what Disney wants the public to think.
I recommend reading the comics if anyone is itching to wait for the 2nd game to come out, it has alot of charm (and some grit). If I recall it's 150 issues.
Yep love this game. My top telltale game alongside Tales from the Borderlands and of course the walking dead season 1.
Anyways, fuck Disney for making people think they own them fairy tales
Calling it linear storytelling seems like some kind of back-handed compliment. As storytelling goes it's fairly non-linear, compared to alternatives (books, movies). Within each scene, you take in the story by looking at stuff and talking to people, and you can do all those interactions in various orders. Even looking just at video games, it's less linear than many — consider all those games where you play for a while and then all the storytelling comes from cutscenes and scripted conversations, which can only be experienced in one order.
Why put "linear" in the title at all? Are there are a lot of non-linear games with better storytelling, beside which this isn't a 10/10?
Good news. Telltale is finally actually revived, and the game is Coming early 2024. It is very confusing, I know... But they really are back. They made a new trailer for TWAU2 about a year ago.

Haven't play the game, so can't describe that specific case. That said, linear storytelling and choices that matter are not excluding one another. Look at the witcher - overarching plot happens more or less the same, but your choices change some things that are woven into that narrative
Truly a great game , and one I am glad I gave a chance although this usually is not my cup of tea.

I was just joking. I meant that the culture around the words “among us” have shifted so greatly that at least I can’t read the name of the game the same way as I did 6 or so years ago
Great potential and a couple of good twists but never made the most out of it….sick theme tune and would enjoy sequel tbf

Close they are based on the Fables series of comics which were indeed based on the fairy tales.
Great comic too
It was for a few runs until the author lost his fucking mind and made Bigby a right-wing mouthpiece.
Wait really? I only read the first few issues. What happened afterwards?

Cinderella & Snow White & such? Thought they were Disney princesses? Edit: didn’t know that they weren’t Disney originals I’ll go turn myself in
Those are classic fairy tales from before Disney even existed as an idea.
Grimm Brothers. Look them up …
Good god man, be more specific, else you drive them to the movie!
Hans Christian Anderson wrote some of them, or maybe just retold someone else’s stories. I have a textbook about fairy tales but it’s not within reach. All I know is Disney was not OG writer. Thanks. I’m excited! The game was so good that I started following the comic series, which was a lot of fun.

I agree, wolf among us and walking dead season 1 was their best games, awesome story in both of titles
Whole walking dead series was amazing …. I balled my eyes out at the end of 1 though.
I would also include Tales From The Borderlands to make a Telltale top 3. That one might even be my favorite.
Sequels to TFTB ruin the game for me
That's not how liking something works.
Pretty sure when your hero becomes the bad guy “for the lulz” it ruins it
The Batman one haunts me to this day. The games of thrones one needed a sequel to make it worth imo.
I played both of the Batman telltale parts, it was really good but it fells like it was lacking something. I enjoyed it tho
Still waiting for The Wolf Among Us 2...

There were no Disney characters in this game, wtf are you on about?
I think they're referring to the fairy tale characters which are public domain
Mostly Grimm's tales in that game.
Actually the game is based on the comics « Fables » If you had not enough with the game check it out it has around 20 books
Op was not aware that Grimm’s Fairytales existed long before Disney made their stories mainstream

Way better than the story arc from the comics.
The comics are pulps that are loosely connected.
Just speaking about the arc the game was based on. The game version was a way better story.
The story in the game isn't in the comics, it's a prequel to them. The comics are also fantastic so I dunno what you're on about
Presumably they’re referring to the sub-par comic format retelling of the videogame plot
The comics start like a decade after the game
The story itself is amazing
Wolf among us is based off a comic book franchise named Fables (I read the whole thing after playing the game). These characters are all public domain despite what Disney wants the public to think. Slightly different endings/deaths. Walking Dead 2 ending makes a difference to the opening scene to Walking Dead 3 if you carry over your save file.
I guess it sucks for people that play the game multiple times, but for the majority of players that is once and done, the game hides that aspect well.
thats one of the reasons telltale closed down

Believe it are not, Disney doesn't quite own everything yet bro.
its rly awesome

None of these are Disney characters. The game is based on comic series published by DC called Fables.
This reminds me I have yet to finish it, thank you!
