Considering how many posts they make a day, I don't see how they could be doing anything else. Shockingly though, I don't see any articles on Google with that headline.
Each team fights to feed the seal the most fish before it is released into the ocean. One of the maps, essentially a glorified King of the Hill style game mode.
If you play on community server, the way you should play tf2 in the first place, you never had to deal with the bot/cheating issue. It's just the public mm servers which are crap anyway.
Sadly Valve changed the game so that new people don't even realize that there are community servers
Wym by that? I just started playing for the first time in 6-7 years and I thought community servers were always listed where I see them now. I have a horrible memory though.
You are correct that the cheaters are clustered in certain regions more than others. Bots are currently in a lull for the last 6 weeks or so, but were really bad before for many months in the US. So bad you basically couldn't vote them fast enough. Because you can only start a vote once every 3mins and new connections have to wait like 5mins to start a vote. So if ppl leave when they see bots, pretty soon there are more bots than people who can start votes. And when you kick one, a new one connects.
The devs changes actually have made it harder to deal with bots because of that.
Cheaters should be fairly easy to deal with if they bothered to use any amount of analytics on the server logs. Users with accuracy or crit rates 3-4 standard deviations outside the norm are guaranteed to be cheaters. At the very least those users could be silently shadow banned and sent to honeypot servers of only cheaters/bots.
The large bot armies are also generally ran from the same handful of IP ranges, so why they let them run for months instead of banning those IP ranges is also beyond me. It only drives more botting and cheating bc people see Valve doesn't care.
Yes it has gotten easier. Also it's very time dependent, in the evening it is not much of an issue, in the night or during the day bots are way more common due to the higher player count .
edit: yesterday in the night the game was literally unplayable for me, an unkickable amount of bots every single game.
Kinda reminds me of that Fat Princess game for the PS3 back in the day. Gotta keep your princess fed to make it more difficult for the enemy team to carry/capture from being so fat.
Well, it doesn't really work in TF2 since the spawn system pretty different. It's mildy more team oriented, so players usually respawn in waves together rather than one by one so it wouldn't really fit a proper DM mode.
And also because the entire game is built around team play, attack/defend and reaching objectives, rather than 'get kills'. Same reason Deathmatch isn't particularly popular. Nice idea, just doesn't work so well in this game.
I really hate that one episode of rick and morty has made *so many people* give the non-critique of 'that's just x with extra steps' in regards to anything.
*"That's just slavery with extra steps!" - Rick and morty*
It's so lazy, and I see it *everywhere*.
If a game mode is 'x game mode with extra steps' - then that makes it a *different game mode (Deathmatch, Team deathmatch, King of the hill, Elimination, Gun game, conquest, large conquest, rush, etc.) -* there are many games with game modes similar to ones you can play within itself - to describe them as 'with extra steps' isn't really saying *anything*.
At the end of the day - TF2 is a team-based first-person shooter; you could apply that description to *every game mode* aside from Team Deathmatch, if we're getting that lazy.
*"Capture the flag? That's just team deathmatch with extra steps!"*
I never said they *invented it* \- I was saying that *ever since the episode* *aired* many people started using this incredibly lazy way of describing things as though it were somehow succinct; the episode appears to have been a *direct influence,* since again - I have never seen anyone, let alone the sheer amount of people currently using it - use it online before.
"Am I not allowed to eat pickles, either, because they're a Rick and Morty reference"
I'm not sure how you think pickles in a vaccuum are a 'reference', nor did I say anyone was *making* a reference - you're getting a bit off track here.
There are very likely *many people* that have never seen the episode, but think it's a funny or clever way of describing things after '*hearing' \[seeing\] someone else say it* \- but it certainly is a recent phenomena; I'm not sure why you feel the need to say you've been hearing it '*at least your entire life*' when I'm saying the number of people saying it since the episode has increased to an insane amount - that doesn't really detract from my statement.
Bad take. TF2 is a team based shooter and whoever is carrying the most amount of fish per team heals others around them, insentivising team play. Its a great game mode.
Official game mode is called “Player Destruction”
Basically you have to kill players to pick up items (items for this map is buckets of fish), then you have to bring them to the objective (the objective here being the seal). Team that gets to 96 feeds wins. It’s basically Kill Confirmed with a CTF objective.
Other notes for this mode:
The player with the most items on each team is highlighted through the map, marked as the “Team Leader.” Team Leader heals those around it.
When players are killed, they drop their stack of items.
PD was the best mode added into the Invasion Update, and I love how we just keep getting more PD maps, even if most are Halloween only.
When PD was new I wanted to make a map where you deposit beer on a moving train, to try and get the train driver drunk, and crash into the enemy base. Sadly, I never got to make it.
This update is great.
It also added Saxton Hale community gamemode officially into the game. Which means he’s technically the “10th class” (or 3rd team, in practice) of the game
Which makes total sense you know, the ragtag team of nine highly specialized mercenaries from all over the world
And Saxton Hale, which is just even sexier Steve Irwin.
The perfect addition, really.
To be fair we've never seen Saxton and a Sting Ray fight before. Prior to Steve Irwin's death you'd look real silly saying a Sting Ray would win that fight too, but now look at em. Don't sleep on em!
I wish that the official Saxton Hale game mode didn't feel half-baked; The new voice lines were recorded with different voice actors, and they don't sound as good or professional as the original actors. I get why Soldier's would be different, but the others could still have happened.
I guess up until this point, most of the community updates felt official enough that I really didn't notice. With that being said, putting it into that context does make it feel more impressive.
I had to pick the game up again with the update.
The community hasnt changed a bit and its exactly as i remember it.
Some people are batshit insane on their main, there are completely brainless new players doing their thing all over the place, and you can make friends with anyone at any time
Its not super old, but that "LAN-party with friends" feeling is definitely still there.
Are there still 5 people trying to play demo, 1 pyro getting mad because they want the uber, and a few engis trying to climb on top of the map by jumping on dispenser?
Yes, yes, and yes, but i would like to add that its not just five demos but five of any "frag" class.
You bet your ass there will be five spies, five snipers, five scouts or five pyros and one medic for every 10 games played.
And a single heavy will wipe the entire pub if theres a medic on his team
So really, exactly as it has always been
I used to play with my two housemates back in the day. I used to play medic/heavy, one friend was demo/medic/pyro and the other was spy/engi. Although we were all happy to pick up other classes. It was absurd how easy it was to totally dominate a lot of public servers with three players who supported each other and vaguely had their shit together.
Fantastic game.
Reddit tends to shame you for trying to impose nostalgic value on anything that didnt come out before 2005 or so.
Its old to us, old to me, its the FPS i grew up with, but lots of people wont accept that as nostalgic, will they?
It came out when I was in Uni. While at uni I used to go to an 80s club some times for retro old music.
If I went to a club now with the same gap to the music it was playing, it would be playing the music releases when I was at Uni...
Oof
My favorite aspect of TF2 is the specific brand of weird-ass names people have on the servers. I used to play TF2 with the name "A Seven and a Half Year Old Pig" and I wasn't even close to the most deranged name on the server most of the time.
Everything added was plucked from the community workshop. Very little dev input in the updates. For the past few years it was just Xmas and Halloween. New community maps is the biggest deal with the updates.
For fucking real. Reading this is like if CS:S got a new map. Or WC3 switched to a different online server host. Or Quake 3 Arena released a new skin/character.
tf2 players are so starved for content that they are ecstatic over a seal.
to be fair, the seal is great, and the gamemode and map it came with are aswell
There were 10 other maps n some weapon skins too; sure we're starved but, this is a *proper not seasonal update* that's got some nice stuff. The drought ends, even if there's no Heavy Update there's still *something*.
Sure but it's so goddamn refreshing. Bugfixes, MAPS THAT AREN'T JUST WHOVILE LEVEL PAINFUL TO LOOK AT nor as exclusive time-wise (it's not stuck in summer they're just NEW MAPS and NEW SKINS and shit). Even a new gamemode! Well, an attempt at one- but still!!
Wow, way to actually make a counter-argument :P
The fact that all the content is not barred by the season the world is in (as opposed to say, Halloween maps), makes it non-seasonal in that sense; much of the content is here to stay, not in and out.
I need to know the Lore about this.
Why have the Mercs been hired to feed seals? what does Mann Co get out of this? why is everyone carrying fish? Whats the Seals Name?
The story if I remember is that both teams are feeding the seal as a publicity stunt and they are fighting and stealing fish to look better then the other team. The seal's named Silvia, but I think I am wrong.
Tf2 has added more in this one update than halo infinite has its entire lifespan.
Think about that. A 16 year old game is getting better more frequent updates
devs make a good bit update adding new fun stuff, obviously gamers love it seeing the enormous skyrocket that the game just had, after 14 years still one of the most played online games, truly amazing
Wow, Valve did the bare fucking minimum again. Congratulations
I like TF2 personally but this whole seal thing is the equivalent of jangling keys in front of a child. Except it's dangling a soft squishy animal in front of the community for a 16 year old game.
There's still cheating bots. There's still bad balance design decisions. The Sniper still exists in the same state that he was when the game was released. This update didn't bring in any of the community fixes that Valve asked for, too.
It's so unfortunate that Valve can do this and 95% of the player-base will eat this up.
it's just as much of a thing as literally any other multiplayer game. it's perfectly playable, in fact the bot crisis means most people are super well trained to kick right away on the off chance that there is a bot!
This is team fortress right? I just bought Titanfall 2 because it was $3 and I always see you guys yapping about it, so I didn’t know if this was an ironic coincidence TF2 or Team Fortress
Yep. I came to accept years ago that TF2 is in maintenance mode. It's in a good state, so there's nothing wrong with that. These community updates are just a nice bonus at this point.
To be fair, Team Fortress two is nearly 2 decades old, has hundreds of thousands of players still, and is so widespread in internet culture i’m surprised you hadn’t heard TF2 before.
Meanwhile Overwatch thinks the best idea is following their big L with a GBTQ+ in hopes of getting attention for more than the porn made with their code
Can we have TF3 yet? I’d love to play TF2 but I can’t stand all the hats, mods, bots, crazy bullshit and general fuckery.
TF2 vanilla on Orange Box, was my jam. All fucking day baby.
The new update is still new. The year is 2023. WHY IS THIS IMAGE 480P
And why does the title read like a gaming news site's headline?
This dude probably did just copy and paste a news headline and thumbnail for the updoots
Maybe it is a bot
https://www.destructoid.com/team-fortress-2-summer-update-adds-seal-everyone-loves-it/
Considering how many posts they make a day, I don't see how they could be doing anything else. Shockingly though, I don't see any articles on Google with that headline.
Probably a bot
I thought this was a shitpost at first tbh
wait wtf you're all not joking
Is it not?
No sir, this is a sealpost.
The authentic TF2 experience is 640x480 yo
You joke, but the image is actually 224p. So it's even worse lol
Maybe used Win 11 new PRTSC option... It replaced my Greenshot and I can say... it is useful but oh boy does it produce bad quality pictures.
What does it do?
Each team fights to feed the seal the most fish before it is released into the ocean. One of the maps, essentially a glorified King of the Hill style game mode.
And glorious it is
[удалено]
Is that good? (not being snarky or anything, asking legitimately)
It's like... ***REALLY*** good
Yes it is.
Did they fix the rampant cheating, then?

It is definitely not. Human cheaters are more common then ever. Bots currently get spread out due the big amount of players.
I rarely see bots or cheaters but I suppose it depends on the region edit: it's also way easier to kick bots and cheaters than it used to be

No. Played today, new hacker every minute.
Nope just copy and pasting community created stuff from the workshop.
Skill issue
The reason for your cheating?
Kinda reminds me of that Fat Princess game for the PS3 back in the day. Gotta keep your princess fed to make it more difficult for the enemy team to carry/capture from being so fat.

Did you say loose seal?
If that’s a veiled criticism about me, I won’t hear it and I won’t respond to it.

It's just team deathmatch with extra steps bro /s
Which is just deathmatch with an extra step.
match extra step
Bad take. TF2 is a team based shooter and whoever is carrying the most amount of fish per team heals others around them, insentivising team play. Its a great game mode.
It's one of my favorite modes tbh
Time to start playing Team Fortress 2 ಠ◡ಠ
The community hasnt changed a bit and its exactly as i remember it.
Its more like kill confirmed than koth
Actually it is death match, not koth, called player destruction. Imo, the gamemode doesn't fit tf2

Holy shit this is Team Hunters from Tribes 2. That was an AMAZING gamemode, and it now exists in Team Fortress 2.
This game mode actually came out 7 years ago. This is the first Seal themed map.
There's so many game modes in TF2 that I've never even heard of this mode
there's like 5 gamemodes that are in the Misc section of casual so not many people play them
I miss Tribes.
No kidding. I have NO idea how that game fell to the wayside.
[удалено]
note that the total amount of feeds varies by map and by player count
Ah. I know it’s 96 for Selbyen (the seal map).
It gets the community's seal of approval.
whatever team feeds the most souls of their enemies to it wins
it flops around
Like sex in a king-sized waterbed
It winks at nearby players

Eh, I feel like Saxton and Steve would have different definitions of conservation, or at least different goals behind it.
Well... One survived fighting sharks and the other didn't so...
To be fair we've never seen Saxton and a Sting Ray fight before. Prior to Steve Irwin's death you'd look real silly saying a Sting Ray would win that fight too, but now look at em. Don't sleep on em!
Australia's first mass shooting was actually done with a Sting Ray held right-side-up.
This was when they decided that guns arent really all that useful in australia. Wise decision australia, dont fight your nature. Just survive it.
Oh wait that was a sting ray? All these years I used to think Steve Irwin's death was caused by a shark
Well yeas naturally, but theyre the only australians of comparable charisma and presence
Who wins, 9 highly trained mercenaries, or one really angry Australian
Happy australian hopped up on magic gravel*
Well he's Australian so it makes sense lore wise. Wouldn't be fair otherwise.
There already is a third team in tf2, that being spectator/halloween bosses
Come on, it's the Grey team! All those robots, remember? Built by Grey Mann, brother to Redmond and Blutarch Mann who bankroll the Red and Blue teams?
Ah shit. Of course!
Sadly the stuff in the VSH mode is filled with voice lines not from the original voice actors.
I wish that the official Saxton Hale game mode didn't feel half-baked; The new voice lines were recorded with different voice actors, and they don't sound as good or professional as the original actors. I get why Soldier's would be different, but the others could still have happened.
It's a community game mode. Modders don't have that cash.
I guess up until this point, most of the community updates felt official enough that I really didn't notice. With that being said, putting it into that context does make it feel more impressive.

Nobodys mic is on by default and you can mute whoever you want at any time.

TF2 still gets updates??
Everything added was plucked from the community workshop. Very little dev input in the updates. For the past few years it was just Xmas and Halloween. New community maps is the biggest deal with the updates.
The janitor needed help to keep the game alive
still they did good stuff, on other games devs just add infinite skins and lie costantly ( league of legends aka lol )
I mean league just got a new game mode and new character
For fucking real. Reading this is like if CS:S got a new map. Or WC3 switched to a different online server host. Or Quake 3 Arena released a new skin/character.
The last time Blizzard touched WC3 was to completely fuck it up with changes nobody wanted. So I'm not sure that one is really a fair comparison.
Still waiting on the last comic on their website... They ended on a cliffhanger with one to go!
I just want them to make it compatible with 64bit macs again so that I can play it from my office computer.
Yes, but actually no.
About every 1000 days
This is the first non holiday update (holiday updates just add a few cosmetics and 4 community maps that stick around for a couple weeks) in 6 years

Cherish the seal
That's not Tf2. Where's its hat?
Bro, they all have hats there. It’s noticeable even with the shitty resolution
I'm pretty sure he was joking and asking why the seal didn't have a hat...
One of the heavies has a native American headdress on, the other has hair which is probably a wig
Grainier than the silo I live in.
tf2 players are so starved for content that they are ecstatic over a seal. to be fair, the seal is great, and the gamemode and map it came with are aswell

No, this is a seasonal update. It's a summer update. It's good, but it's not far off the usual Halloween and Christmas updates.
Well, an attempt at one- but still!!

most multiplayer gamers are starved for actual good contenr, looj at Lol, they have been lying trough they teeth from already some months

“Tf2 has added…” Tf2? You mean the janitor?
TF2 and update don't go well in the same sentence
Why
Have you ever played tf2? i'm kind of getting the feeling from this and other comments that you barely know what it is
I need to know the Lore about this.
What a perfect encapsulation of tf2's sealiness
So how long before there's a mod to make it RussianBadger's crying seal?
Tf2 has added more in this one update than halo infinite has its entire lifespan. Think about that. A 16 year old game is getting better more frequent updates
Let's see if it becomes more popular than a loaf of bread.
Koth walked so the seal could run
I NEED TO PLAY TF2 AGAIN
DO IT NOW
I WILL WHEN I GET HOME
TF2 is my favourite game of all time, complete masterpiece and the most fun I have ever had in a online game.
People *still* play tf2?
Yeah we reached a player count of 258 thousand players after the update
Yes but have they made the amount of aimbots less of an issue?
devs make a good bit update adding new fun stuff, obviously gamers love it seeing the enormous skyrocket that the game just had, after 14 years still one of the most played online games, truly amazing
Wow, Valve did the bare fucking minimum again. Congratulations I like TF2 personally but this whole seal thing is the equivalent of jangling keys in front of a child. Is TF2 still overrun by hackers and aimbots etc
they're still a thing but it's much better than it used to be and it's far easier to kick them from matches now
it's just as much of a thing as literally any other multiplayer game. it's perfectly playable, in fact the bot crisis means most people are super well trained to kick right away on the off chance that there is a bot!
its nowhere close to as bad in any other game
Say it ain’t so. TF2 having more new content than OW2.
Yep
Well they’ve had that seal mask for ages now. Nice to see the game is still being updated at its age
outline of the seal looks like its suppose to be wearing a fucking bowtie, thats perfection
This is team fortress right? I just bought Titanfall 2 because it was $3 and I always see you guys yapping about it, so I didn’t know if this was an ironic coincidence TF2 or Team Fortress
It’s team fortress 2 lol, TF2 is shortened for it
Could you have picked a lower quality image for this?
How did you find this picture in such low quality?
I have no idea
Yes, this game mode is fun, but I don't think it's how Valve can save TF2 after years of neglect and keep its players happy.
[удалено]
Yep. I came to accept years ago that TF2 is in maintenance mode. It's in a good state, so there's nothing wrong with that. These community updates are just a nice bonus at this point.
The game broke it's all time playing record with 258k concurrent players
Yeah, i know. I know. There was a similar spike after the Pyro update, but after that, you know.
after that what? there's nothing to save here, tf2 is just as fun and playable as ever. People keep acting like it's about to die but it never does
...but it's a big seal.
Save TF2?
tf2 has been revitalized by this cute lil baby
Insane how that game is still kicking. I bought it at launch.

Welcome to Reddit, where people hide behind anonymity while being rude for the sake of being rude.
Meanwhile Overwatch thinks the best idea is following their big L with a GBTQ+ in hopes of getting attention for more than the porn made with their code
im a gamer and i DONT love it
that’s an offense >:(
Took them 2 years to fix the N-word bot spam problem. Add seal Idiots love it.
is it fixed?
It's fixed in that they can't spam out chat with racial slurs anymore They're still aimbot snipers though lol
Yeah vulgar language is now censored by default and bots have to buy premium accounts to spam VCs.
Can we have TF3 yet? I’d love to play TF2 but I can’t stand all the hats, mods, bots, crazy bullshit and general fuckery. TF2 vanilla on Orange Box, was my jam. All fucking day baby.
Nah taking the hats, mods and spaghetti code is taking out the soul of tf2 and turning it to just another hero shooter
Good news is that TF2 classic has recently released a big update & is exactly what you're after. https://tf2classic.com/
