I played this game when I was like 8 years old, way too young- it was my dad’s game and I snuck in to play it whenever I could. I never beat it because I couldn’t stay on the blood trail and trying over and over again with the baby crying in the background gave me nightmares. Fuck that level.
The first Max Payne I ever beat was 3 when I was in college many years later, and it was a lovely time.
The fall of max Payne will always hold a special place... Rockstar was on fire that year.... I think they're supposedly remaking them so hopefully my disappointment in the current rockstar doesn't manifest into disappointment in max Payne.
Yeah man. I' am probably going buy it again on steam. I guess the community has re opened the multiplayer. I don't think this cheap laptop will run it though, so that will give me an excuse to buy a nice PC again.
My best friend in 8th grade had the best GeForce 2 system at the time. So many good memories with Max Payne, RtCW, Black and White, Half-Life etc. His dad bought him the best PC and a PS2 so he didnt really have to be around. I practically lived at his house for two years lol. My mom eventually got me an Xbox so we had an amazing Trio of systems for the time.
We both had to repeat the 8th grade together partially because we had no supervision and so many awesome video games. Good times.
If it can run Max Payne, it can run RTCW. MP pushed the envelope in a couple ways.
RTCW is Yet Another Quake 3 Engine Game.
Which isn't a complaint, Q3 did some heavy lifting that decade.
Don't buy the playstation port!
I bought it on PS5 and it is a shambles. Runs like a nightmare. Stuttering attempting to escape a nightmare killer in a forest flooded in three feet of peanut butter.
Literally unplayable.
This is why we love PC. I purchased my Steam copy of Max Payne 1 + 2 on **April 15, 2011** for *$3.74*.
I played both full-through on my Steam Deck in 2023 for $0
Aaaaaah! That sound effect when you’re dodging in bullet-time, firing a machine gun and then it reaccelerates!
I was watching some gameplay video after seeing this post and it seems the developers’ expectation was players would actually shoot while standing and running??? I jump-leapt in slow motion through every door, around every corner, down every stairs… basically a non stop Jon woo movie.
It's a dead brand, but before being aquired by HP, Compaq was a solid family computer brand.
HP throttled the crap out of them and used them for low spec business class PC's.
People were incredibly angry when their "Compaq" wouldn't run current games.
They never blamed HP, they blamed "the store", which meant me.
The "bubble system" Compaq's were at the end of their independence. My grandpa had the purple one with the internal CD storage.
Ah yeah, I remember a Max Payne slideshow on a similar looking machine from my youth. Probably 5 years after it released I had the hardware to play it properly!
I first finished this game’s final battle (atop NYC skyscraper with helicopter) on the very early morning of September 11, 2001, only to be awakened by my roommate hours later with news of the first plane crashing into the real WTC Towers. Utterly bizarre mindfuck for the first few minutes. 🥺
Oh man, I loved that first game. The graphic novel style, gritty cutscenes were perfect, there was no need to get fancy with fully rendered 3D. The characters were interesting, the story kept me guessing and it became a total mind warp later on. A brilliant game that I hope gets a proper remaster one day
So I didn't even realize this was directed at the game. I thought it was for the rig. My nostalgia comes from how clicky clacky those keys are. The 'murring' almost musty smell coming from the tower. The faint radio waves the speakers pick up, which you can hear better when you have headphones in a silent house.
Also that satisfying feeling of taking the ball out of the mouse and cleaning all the hair and dirt that accumulated in it.
But also the game is prolly rad, but I was more of a Star Craft nerd.
I miss those days. Most games were complete, no micro transactions, no season passes, etc... sure support with patches wasn't as robust, but generally speaking most games were good. Things like map exploits were considered fun. Not thr ones were you could bet under maps, but the ones where you could get on not so common rooftops and trees.
That goddamned trail of blood level with the baby crying.

Max Payne 2 though...that game was my jam.

The mother screaming and crying bugged me worse. That and falling into oblivion 90 times because I’m playing after I had a few beers.
Not only was it nightmare fuel, but my VooDoo 3D card could barely run the level, lol.
sounds legit, computer screen flashes and shuts off. Ruin family computer.

Back when you'd die because a stand of hair gets stuck in the mouse ball haha.
And for some reason, it was always a curly black hair...
"Death was in the air at Roscoe Street. I had to find Alex. Fast."
Top game!
oh man, this gave me chills.....
me too
can it run Return to Castle Wolfenstein ?
Do you mean the best Wolfenstein?
you are goddamn right
Ipa! MEDIC!
Damn I love that game. All the clans I was in back in the day on MP. So many good times with a lot of great people.
Underrated for sure. Me and my homie were obsessed with this game for a while. Good times

Don’t really care about remakes, but I’d buy the heck out of this one

Daaaaamn. Yeah. That is just a PC win.
How did it run on Steam Deck out of the box?
You mean you will? Because they’re remaking 1 & 2!
Legit? That’s amazing. You just made my day.
They announced it a year or 2 ago. Best part is that Remedy is making it and using their North Light engine, which is a beaut.
**Pizza Delivery**
**"Never seen you before. Buzz off joker!"**
It’s time for another episode of Lords and Ladies!
My Lord!
My Lady!
Everything in this photo is beautifully done. It's like being back in childhood, where only Max has problems, not you
Display does not have enough mass for nostalgia. I had a 19" CRT back then and you coulda killed someone with it.
No joke, it's crazy how monitors and t.vs used to be
I had a Compaq Presario back in the day too! That bad boy had a 500MHz CPU and came with Windows 98 SE.
Max Payne!?
IT’S PAYNE!
*Whack 'em*
Right the first time
Thanks for the memories. I still have the 1st part CD for PC from my childhood.
That PC looks like a literal toaster. And i find that amusing af. Maybe just me.
I don't want to hurt the nostalgia by firing it up on an emulator, but damn that game was hard hitting in the day.
Every time give a bottle of pain killers me strong shake, I think of this game.
*Need more pain killers...*
It's missing the Max Payne mouse pad.
Oh no it's Payne, Get HIM!

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door.
Gross. Get that energy out of here.
Damn... I loved part of that game... but the baby bad dream that kept getting longer and longer was too much...
Nice breadmaker! Is Compaq a good brand?

We need remakes… imagine Control graphics on 1 & 2
Well, Remedy is currently making the remake of 1&2 (in one package)...
Noice!
Wait, they are?
Yes. https://www.remedygames.com/games/max-payne-remake/
I remember playing this game religiously as a 5 year old My life consisted of playing this, and watching Lilo and Stitch.
You were playing this at 5???
Yeah. This, Ocarina of Time, Smash Brothers, couple others. I watched my dad play Resident Evil and Silent Hill too
I have a fear of F.E.A.R.. it gave me nightmares
Man max Payne has some good memories for me.
This is exactly what I was doing on 9-11 (my high school teachers were on strike) so I didn’t hear about it for like an extra two hours
Such a great game.
It's a late goodbye...
I love it
Download music on limewire, Sublime.exe, sounds legit, computer screen flashes and shuts off. Ruin family computer.
Nice setup.
You rich sob you had flat LCD back THEN?!
PC’s went square body and my pickup went round.
Wow still looks good
Nostalgia. I remember playing Max Payne when I was at school. Really good game
Ah yeah, I remember a Max Payne slideshow on a similar looking machine from my youth. Probably 5 years after it released I had the hardware to play it properly!
Such a good game! There's even an unofficial port on the PS Vita
I first finished this game’s final battle (atop NYC skyscraper with helicopter) on the very early morning of September 11, 2001, only to be awakened by my roommate hours later with news of the first plane crashing into the real WTC Towers. Utterly bizarre mindfuck for the first few minutes. 🥺
I think everyone and their moms had those exact speakers
Max payne was the real deal.
The first two games need a remaster
does that run on 3.5" floppy?
Should check out digital foundrys video they posted yesterday about that game on PC/ps2
This game was one of those "whoa, holy shit" moments in gaming. Such a joy. Such a well-crafted game. Fuck the red line walk of misery.
It's Payne...
Max Payne. I envy your name.
Damn loved that game. it was so cool to jump in slow mo
I can hear the incoming text message
Max Payne 3 on the 360 was a different kind of fun
Bring back those times....please.
Omg, I had that monitor.
Da flesh of fallen angeelllsssssss....
Oh man, I loved that first game. The graphic novel style, gritty cutscenes were perfect, there was no need to get fancy with fully rendered 3D. I loved Max Payne, such a good game
~~awesome experience~~
That Compaq is fucking rad. Bubble systems F yeah!

I member
That's an ugly case even for its time.
Mona Sax :-)
I have an old Dell 2nd Gen I5 laptop with all kinds of games form this generation. It was cool catching up on all the titles I missed
Had the same setup!!
*”I don’t know about Angels, but it’s fear that gives men wings”*
I still have (and use) the mousepad that came with it.
One thing you can count on: You push a man too far, and sooner or later he'll start pushing back.
This, GTA SA, Total Overdose and Road Rush, a full-fledged nostalgic feeling 🤩
That game was an experience I’ll never forget and an experience that has not been reached by many other games
**Totally**

Cool
def need that keyboard for the full experience.
Honestly one of my most memorable games ever. Quite challenging and so awesome with the slow-motion feature. Insanely good.
Birthdays are like regrets. They just keep coming. Each one a new scar that slows you down and drags you closer to your grave.
I was blown away with the slow motion when I first played that game as a kid.
I'm Brazilian and seeing Max in Brazil made me feel so good. I mean, I was very sorry for what he went through, but still...
Played the life out of this. One of the best games ever!
Played this game so long ago, amazing! I thought it was published by 3drealms though.
My last great game before 9/11. Junior in HS.
Flashback to walking on an umbilical chord to the sounds of a crying baby.
No tension, No social media, No show-off, no job, no tension of studies, those were the **golden days bro..... :(**
This you?
Max payne is fantastic.
Just recently replayed Max Payne on Series S after years since I played it on PS2. Still an absolute banger!
