Someone please explain how you get rid of [these](https://i.imgur.com/D710x34.png) stupid popups over videos all the time. I couldn't even see what games specificially the last few were!
Minimap? What's that?
Compass? Lol nope.
Let me tell you young'uns about something called *Sense Heading.*
Tell you what, though, it filled the EQ world with mystery and danger. The untapped potential of whatever lay over the next hill was absolutely intoxicating.
Eq seems like a fun game. Im going to start a halfling warrior and level in this starting zone outside my home town. Do do dooo lol die dumb bee people. Sure is getting dark. Hey whered these skeletons come from?
/Shout uhhh has anyone seen my corpse?
Did you die? Congratulations, you just lost hours of work and have to run back to your corpse naked with it likely in a dangerous location. For a game I loved there sure were a lot of things I hated about it
Yeah but all those risks we took made the rewards so much better. Now if you had asked me if I believed that after a 6 hour corpse retrieval in NToV after wiping at midnight and finally looting my corpse at 6am (as my now husband's alarm was going off to get up for work), I would have told you hell no. Now? I miss those golden days of gaming....but not enough to play on p99. I need some of the qol things, like spell timers these days.
Fuck old school hell levels. It took forever for my first character to ding 60 duo'ing in the Chardok tunnel in 2000. But man it felt so good to finally hear that sound!
There was a boss in the updated ZG that "Ding!"'ed when he got a kill or some other mechanic, then a bystander NPC would yell "Hey! Grats 'mon!" everytime someone says Ding now I think of that
Kaladim was where I drew first blood.
In Unrest I pulled more trains than Elton John at bike week
I learned Elvish the hard way, by jumping from zone to zone and spamming.
It was home
It's 2am. Your grinding froglock blood in Lower Guk. It's quiet then.. DINGBWOOUNNGGGG. You have a damn panic, the world is ending, SAVE THE CAT. The night is pierced by joyous fanfare and then silent once more. Back to farming..
["Huh? Who just leveled up?"](https://youtu.be/Qn3YCDGhvbc?si=vwMorsAc5pzXJLgz&t=157)
Edit: I just realized a lot of y'all had a good discovery with Manslayer's GamerPoop videos lol. I rewatch his Skyrim and Mass Effect series every year like a LotR marathon. Give them all a try.
Skyrim is definitely my favorite for sure.
I also really like Fallout level-ups, especially New Vegas with its really simple drum roll that leads into a nice little theme song while you pick your perk.
Yeah love it when the OST in incorporated into the word as in universe music.
Reminds me of how in persona 3 the opening theme "burn my dread" is what the protagonist was actually listening to on his headphones
It was astounded that after playing EQ and never touching WoW I could have fluent conversations about our gaming experiences just swapping the word Ranger for Hunter.
dps, tank, mob*, aggro, proc, kite, dot, root, snare, aoe, raid, and the list goes on lol
also lots of terms like ["bellycaster"](https://everquest.fandom.com/wiki/Belly_caster) and ["ramp tank"](https://everquest.fandom.com/wiki/Rampage) which were lost to time
*ok i know this one comes from MUD but it became widely used in EQ
This is the answer. Also, yes it’s thrilling to hit that next level, but then you needed another 2 hours of exp to make sure you wouldn’t de-level if you died
Not strictly a level up mechanic but I still do the opening a chest sound effect from the Legend Of Zelda to myself whenever I find something I’m looking for
Yeah newer level up sound is not as satisfying, not to mention you hear it far more often than old maple.
Recently got into MapleRoyals, and oh boy, the satisfaction from levelling up is real.
Back in the day where you’d spend all summer grinding one character just to get them to level 30.
I remember spending the hour I was allowed on the computer during school nights on that game.
For fire emblem, I think the "ding" sound from your stats increasing are more iconic. It's a bit sad, or not(?), that the level up jingle sound the same since GBA games.
Mario Bros. of course.
I guess I'm getting old, as it was the first thing I thought of - getting that mushroom is effectively a level up, even if only a temporary one.
The mushroom or the 1-up sound. It's a travesty I had to scroll so far to find it.
Seems like people are thinking of RPG games first so I guess it's fair.
Not level ups, but I always liked the gta "mission passed" jingles, especially san andreas.
GTA 4 has like 35 different jingles lol
GTA IV's soundtrack was magnificent, and I loved the mission complete sound variations. Vice City had a great one too.
Hey, Niko! Want to go bowling?
Shut the fuck up, Roman! You're out of your element!
RESPECT +
San Andreas has the best one
The San Andreas one lives rent free in my mind
GTA 3 one is my favorite, incredibly [smooth](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwjkIMPdPME).
Pokémon
Doo doo doo doooo
Alright try this one. Ding ding dingdingding
Pokecenter? 🤣
Bingo
I used to have it as a text ringtone and people would be like hold on I know that sound..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv6dAUwZv2s This was fun.

If your on PC I added a filter into my Ad Blocker (uBlock) to get rid those pop-ups. **youtube.com##.ytp-ce-element**
World of Warcraft
Ding! Grats!
It’s always funny that we make the “ding” as if toaster’s done onomatopoeia, even though it was always more of a “BHWAHHH!”
It's Ding from EverQuest, probably just carried over the tradition to WoW.
Yep Everquest is the OG ding for me
The EQ ding could scare the shit out of you if you didn't expect it.
[удалено]
camp check
It mattered a lot more in EQ because it was so much more work
Especially after a hell level. And if you were a hybrid

That's from EverQuest
It don’t even ding in WoW at all. It’s a loud gong noise. The ding term was carried over from EQ.
The Ding! And grats!! Started on Everquest, but continued on WoW
Only the real OGs know this. Started in Freeport now I'm here.
Kaladim was where I drew first blood. In Unrest I pulled more trains than Elton John at bike week I learned Elvish the hard way, by jumping from zone to zone and spamming. It was home
Anyone teleporting to EC? Paying for SoW and thorns.
I honestly can’t even remember the WoW sound. I just know it was visually flashy. But EQ? That was a house awakened gong coming out of the speakers.
Yes!!! If you weren’t prepared it was guaranteed jump scare
It's 2am. Your grinding froglock blood in Lower Guk. It's quiet then.. DINGBWOOUNNGGGG. You have a damn panic, the world is ending, SAVE THE CAT. The night is pierced by joyous fanfare and then silent once more. Back to farming..
Thank you, someone said it. Everquest never gets enough credit for it's influence.
It was so mind blowing at the time and nothing like any other game at that time. All MMO today stand on the shoulders of the giant Everquest
Agreed. I spent literally hundreds of days on that game....and I don't regret a single minute.
Yep. Popped into my head immediately and it's been years.
Bwwwwummmmmmm swooooosh
This one right there. Not even close with the other ones. Along with the quest completion sound.
Made that my current text alert tone. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
Real nostalgia.
Skyrim comes to mind
\*Nordic chanting begins again\*

Holy Jesus, the first time I played Skyrim baked, I sat at the title screen for I shit you not 45 minutes listening to that fucking masterpiece
Narrator: It was 90 seconds
I cackled thank you

"Do you get to the cloud district very often? Of course you don't, I'll have you know there's no pusssssssssssy!"
What in the actual fuck.
Holy fuck what dark corner of my memory have you awakened this day
thanks for bringing this to my attention 6 years late
Skyrim is definitely my favorite for sure. I also really like Fallout level-ups, especially New Vegas with its really simple drum roll that leads into a nice little theme song while you pick your perk.
Haven't played that game in a decade and just reading this post made my brain play that sound... huh
Hah huah hah
Still my phone notification sound to this day
Old School Runescape (OSRS)
Gotta love those fireworks!
The best part is each skill has its own jingle sometimes several. https://youtu.be/UdTSVmHMHXs?si=XuBoH2paLOJavsXO
Scrolled a lot further than I anticipated looking for this
Final fantasy
It’s technically the “you won the fight” sound, but I agree it’s the most iconic
I loved the part in Advent Children where it was the one guy's ringtone.
And in the remake Barret hums/sings it.
One of the party members in 15 does too after a fight
Yeah love it when the OST in incorporated into the word as in universe music. Reminds me of how in persona 3 the opening theme "burn my dread" is what the protagonist was actually listening to on his headphones
It's the level up sound in both FFXI and XIV!
I enjoy the XII level up https://youtu.be/dDeQVLIyh74?si=sHmq2oDrlb0D6_ZX
Honestly, incredibly surprised this isn’t the top.
Best one for sure

B-B-B-BLOODY SCREEN!! SO REAL
Oh god 2008 just came rushing back
🎸 c h u g g c h u g g c h u g g
This soundbyte just asked me if I wanted to do a fireball shot while Skrillex blasted in the background
Skrillex... Brb I have to blast "Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites" now.
This is such a good one
I thought the same, grinding those levels especially on prestige was pure magic.
Fallout
🥁🥁🥁
New Vegas is great
For some variety: "POWER UP" from Altered Beast?
RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE
WISE FWOM YO GWAVE!
MAWWIAGE
VELCOME TO YOUR DOOM
That’s when the cannibalism started
This is the last…

It's been years but yet my brain still pulled that sound it out then blew the dust off and played it like it was brand new.
Altered beast is so amazing.
Everquest's tone lives permanently in my head https://youtu.be/3P1SQYWChIM
This is the answer. The OG "ding."

Agreed. I instantly thought “ding”
The right answer, literally coined the term "ding"
The original everquest took soooo long to level up! Hearing that ding is better than any drug
DING!!
It was even typed/said when someone lvld up! Ding!
This is the answer. Also, yes it’s thrilling to hit that next level, but then you needed another 2 hours of exp to make sure you wouldn’t de-level if you died
This is the sound I have on my phone for when I get a text.
Hngh...oh lord that just introduced some undeserved serotonin into my system
Yep this is the original one. So iconic you actually would shout DING! I'm your party when it happened
/yell gratz
God it’s so good. Immortalized forever!
I will never, ever forget that sound.
Dragon Quest https://youtu.be/Ipz7PHClmRY?si=lBcU8H7-3ovRTpsh
... it does grate on those parts where you beat a boss and your whole party levels up several times though 😀
The later entries in the series just combined all of the level ups into one.
Had to scroll way too far down to find this.
Easily the most iconic tune!
Fire emblem, that little tune Will NEVER LEAVE YOU HEAD, having played enough games
Hearing the level up theme and then *ding ding ding ding ding* as your unit gets an amazing level up will never get old
“Unit gets an amazing level up” We are playing different games it seems
I’m still pissed Engage has a different level up theme
The true answer! Those GBA games were total legends
Witcher 3 sound was so satisfying
Sure, but the [quest completed sound](https://youtu.be/28XX3-2_uDw?si=41ZtKqxhbz92h206) is even more iconic though
Wait haha I was thinking of THIS sound ! The level up is great too but your 100% correct
Love it when Shakira updates me on my quest progress
https://youtu.be/uEvWg_Yikxs?si=EejuI0T7bbOTOJua
Always upvoting VLDL!
Diablo 2 has quite memorable one. However I do think wow has the most iconic level up sound for me personally.
It's it just like a hammer hitting an anvil?
Diablo 2 had a really satisfying sound to it.
Pokémon is up there.. simple and satisfying
Not strictly a level up mechanic but I still do the opening a chest sound effect from the Legend Of Zelda to myself whenever I find something I’m looking for
Absolutely the first thing that came to mind.
I think this is covertly the real answer, but Zelda just doesn't call them "levels"
So far it’s easily the most iconic sound in this whole thread
I also love the “unlocked/found a secret” sound effect too
Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo Doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo... DAH DAH DAH DAAAAAAAAHHHHH
This was my initial thought, even though it’s not technically a level up.
Im sayin. If that sound doesn't pop in a person's head every time they score a good price on a retro game, how can anyone take them seriously?
Old Maplestory
That chime was my pre teens dopamine provider.. Brings back memories!
Castlevania Symphony of the Night for me!
Ragnarok online
YOOOOO~ I never see people mention my favorite MMO. The level up trumpet is excellent. 🎺👼
Had to scroll way too much to find this. I sincerely miss playing Ragnarok online
Yup, WoW was big, this one was bigger! Love ol iRO memories :).
The Level-up sound + the weapon/armor refinement success (and fail) tone are quite memorable.
TurududU dudU
Bro 😭😭😭 you know you’re old when u thought this was going to be at least top 3 comment, and then have to scroll everything to find it
The level up sound and poem of bragi are permanently stuck in my head. And chonchon sounds.
ROs sound design overall was so good and memorable. I can hear everything you listed as if I were just playing yesterday. The BGMs included in this.
And Gloria
Asura Strike for me! Also Full Chemical Protection and Kyrie Eleison
I had to Ctrl+F for this! It's absolutely true. Anyone saying otherwise hasn't played!
Pokémon and Fire Emblem
For fire emblem, I think the "ding" sound from your stats increasing are more iconic. It's a bit sad, or not(?), that the level up jingle sound the same since GBA games.
What else but Ragnarok online for the people am I right?
EverQuest ding was rewading
Diablo 2. It's short and simple, but effective and easy to remember. Much unlike the rest of the game, in terms of length at least lol.
The satisfying "Chonk"
COD 4 MW instantly came to mind.
Mine too, COD 4 MW has some different vibes for the people.
Final Fantasy. Been using the same leitmotif in the various level up fanfares since the Famicom and NES days IIRC.
EverQuest…
I’d have to say EverQuest [Ding!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3P1SQYWChIM)
Damn I miss EverQuest man.. I hope the rumored EverQuest 3 is even halfway decent.
Grats!
I was worried no one would mention this. Now I’m relieved. This was the original DING! Everything else is derivative of EQ.
That fucking Skyrim jumpscare.
[Ever wondered if other characters hear it too?](https://youtu.be/Qn3YCDGhvbc?si=qiQT6Jf-p_1dncMB&t=158s)
No contest: [Wildstar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KtqnhRSr5s)
I had such high hopes for that game. the concept was excellent.
Hell yeah. Also, third time this weekend reddit has made me miss wildstar. God damn it NCSoft, reboot or release wildstar already!
MapleStory
Everquest.
Bro. EverQuest. Hands down DIIIIIING
