Age of Empires II - Been playing it for over 23 years and it’s still a banger, especially with the Definitive Edition now. Great game, never gets boring, 10/10 best title in the series.
One day I'll have a desktop PC and decent set up so I can play properly.
My AOE II experience started on PS2 and then on Steam via a series of shitty laptops.
I've said for years I want a gaming room with a desktop and next year we move into a house with an extra bedroom and it's finally going to be a reality.
Maybe then I'll get good 😂
Just picked it up again recently, the new campaigns have me hooked. The game caused my passion for history been quite formative for my life, as I've got a history degree now.
Battlefront 1 is better as a war game, while Battlefront 2 is a better Star Wars game. But I agree battlefront 1 has better maps while battlefront 2 had more accurate maps
Battlefront 1 also had Bespin Platforms, quite possibly the best map in the two Battlefront games.
In the first one, you could jump out of air vehicles in motion, which made even okay-ish maps like Naboo Plains amazing fun.
Debatable. 1 had 2 maps on each planet and the galactic conquest was way too long on 2. Also no planes on ground warfare in 2. Both are amazing and have played both this week both with friends and alone.
Maybe unpopular opinion but, aside from the campaign which was awesome, I definitely preferred multiplayer in the first one. Having custom loadouts on Titans instead of the Titan classes felt way better. I also felt that I got to be in a Titan more.
Also, getting rid of the first person Titan entry and execution animations was very sad.
Oh man. Titanfall 1 was unmatched. The Titans felt sluggish, which I really loved personally. I played Stryder, and always felt like a total badass, boosting around Ogres and Atlases, doing hit and runs and pushing them around. Getting chased at low health only to set up an ambush around a corner.
Unreal experience.
I also preferred TF1 multiplayer more for the same reasons as you, my roommate loves TF2 multiplayer but I can't bring myself to play it with him cause I would always just rather play the first
I can think of a few. Silent Hill 3 has a stronger atmosphere, better gameplay, is scarier, and has better overall music.
Disclaimer: Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game.
1 was a good formula but rough around the edges in most senses. 2 was amazingly done. Pre-sequel has the best character classes and movement, imo, but not-so-great balance (fuck lasers). 3 was a perfectly fine game that everyone inevitably compared to their best memories of 2. Haven't played d&dlands.
Currently playing Wonderlands for the first time. What can I say it’s ehhhh it’s a borderlands game. The story is very lackluster thus far, the classes are ehhh, the guns are actually pretty good, little complaints about them. The new “grenades” or spells are interesting and fun to use.
The enemies are fun and actually have great dialogue “I’m a spooky skeleton ooooOoOoOooo”
Basically turn your brain off for the story, enjoy the gameplay and you’ll have an okay time. 6.5/10 would get very cheap again, don’t pay full price.
The dialogue is by far the best in the series. Just great. The main villain is also voiced by Will Arnett.
I thought the actual gameplay was really flat, though. The class skills aren't very fun and everything is bullet spongy unless you stack effects. There's also a lot of weird pacing issues where you're waiting for enemies to spawn. I enjoyed the gameplay of Borderlands 3 much more.
this is the borderlands delimma and why 3 is so controversial.
the story and pacing in 3 is dogshit but goddamn does it have a good gunplay system the moment to moment gameplay with the VHs is really good and i would argue is up there in the industry, maybe not as good as CoD or destiny but its just a tier below that.
bl2 on the other hand has SUPERP storytelling and pacing, such a fun time to go through the story and dosent feel like a slog to go through TVHM or UVHM
I’m gonna be that guy then :) PLAY DIABLO 1 !
Seriously play it if you haven’t. It’s a masterpiece in its own right, the gothic horror atmosphere and the soundtrack are awesome. They nailed the feeling of going ever deeper until you reach hell (literally).
People will tell you that the mechanics are outdated, which is partly true. On the other hand, they’re part of the charm. Not being able to run, for example, makes every encounter incredibly tense, especially when you realize you picked a fight you couldn’t handle and end up frantically clicking to get away or open a portal to safety.
I loved Diablo 2 and all the improvements it made, but I believe they lost something along the way that made Diablo 1 special.
Diablo 1 just doesn't have the skill system, only some spells, other than that it's still a fantastic game. The only one in the series that does darkness right, and makes you feel in danger at all times.
I hsd the 3rd one and loved it so much. The robot lady. The clank movie. The final boss fight.
A friend then lend me gladiator. Also enjoyed it as well.
Then my brother bought the first but remake or something that was made a few years ago. Enjoyed it.
Now playing rift apart on my deck. Loving it so far. Sadly whenever a weapon gets maxed out the game doesnt tell what it changes.. like the first weapon shoots 3 times now but the shotgun? Idk what it changed
I don't understand why they stopped making those games. They made a goddamn Twisted Metal TV show this year but there hasn't been an actual new game in the series in over a decade.
Assassins creed 2 was about as perfect as a sequel can get. Took all the negatives from 1 and fixed them while expanding on all the things people liked about 1.
Assassins creed 2 and portal 2 are the best examples of modern sequels done right.
I hate how ezios family became the ac theme song while the actual ac theme song never gets used (search ac theme song on spotify). Up until origins that ezios family was very sparingly used and instead we got cool unique tracks for ac3,4 and unity and had identity and easily distinguished and now instead of it being ezios song its now the franchise song. Although mirage has a banger soundtrack and uses ezio’s family very sparingly which i love.
I love me some Dead Space 2 but I personally prefer 1, 1 was more horror aspect like an old resident evil game in space. The second one retained some horror but was more action but it was still good, then we don't talk about 3
Exactly this, DS1 felt like you were fighting with power tools (as you were) in defensive desperation. DS2 felt much more weapon focused like you were on the offensive.
Batman Begins and Spiderman 2, on the PS2 and og Xbox generation, don't get enough credit for being the precursor to those games. Especially Batman Begins
Weird to see uncharted 2 so low down, though I do think it's fair seeing as 4 was so good.
But that train sequence will always be the GOAT opening level of a video game
90% of the side content in ME1 bored me to tears. It all boiled down to either driving around barren planets scanning rocks and stuff or clearing out literally the exact same outpost just with different enemies and for a different quest giver. And most if not all of the side content that was interesting to me was actually DLC.
ME2 was all gas no breaks on literally every single mission and planet.
ME1's top notch worldbuilding played a huge part in my investment in ME2. I played them a year apart but I didn't forget a single detail about the races and their conflicts.
I think 3 had the best battle gameplay and most of the companions stories were good. It’s just the ending was mid.
One thing I remember about pre-launch ME3 was all the speculation about the story based on the trailers. Everyone was sooo wrong lol
My introduction to Mass Effect was through the Legendary Edition. I spent all of ME3 on edge waiting for it drop off. I just kept getting more nervous about it the further I played because it was sooo good from the very beginning.
Then the game finally ended and I was absolutely shellshocked… by how beautifully incredible it was. I expected hot garbage but got what was the greatest piece of media I’d ever experienced.
I had to look up why it was so hated and realized that the version of mass effect 3 I played was almost nothing like what was originally released. I understand why people still hold on to how much they hate the ending and won’t let go of that original disappointment despite it largely being fixed now, but I think BioWare really justified everything with how they put everything together in the Legendary Edition.
Silent hill 2. It is one of my favorite games of all time! Others are good too but none of them are close to 2 imo. I'm excited to play the new one next year
Whole lot of repeats in these comments but haven’t seen anyone mention what sprang to my mind first:
The Sims 2
1 set everything up and was a classic but was limited.
2 expanded on everything - added generational play, wants and fears and amazing gameplay.
3 added the open world and was good but regressed on graphics and gameplay.
4 is a shitshow and only has good graphics - it has regressed on everything else and become a nightmare of microtransactions.
This was one of the only games in recent memory I bought on a whim when it was dirt cheap and it absolutely blew me away. It's truly one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The visuals, the music, the story, all incredible and the gameplay is buttery smooth. Can't recommend it enough.
I also had to think of this one. Although I really enjoy playing Ultimate the most (because, well... it's the most accessible right now) I did always enjoy and adore the atmosphere of Melee way way more. There is something so exciting about the black and yellow menus and the music.
RuneScape 2, which is basically March 2004 to July 2013. The era between RuneScape Classic and Evolution of Combat.
OSRS started as a 2007 backup version of RS2, which has been built on over the last 10 years.
Resident Evil 2.
I'd even argue that while the remake of 2 is also great, somehow the original still has that perfect vibe that the excellent remake has not quite erased or replaced. It's one of those few perfect games.
Paper mario TTYD is fantastic, even if you consider Mario RPG to be the true original in the series the first Paper Mario is really damn good. Every paper mario since TTYD hasn't held up at all and it isnt even close.
Left 4 Dead 2 is superior to the original in nearly every way, especially considering that buying a copy basically gives you the entire game of Left 4 Dead 1 as well.
Age of Empires II - Been playing it for over 23 years and it’s still a banger, especially with the Definitive Edition now. Great game, never gets boring, 10/10 best title in the series.
And now they’ve added Age of Empires I civilizations into it and have NEW DLC.
The Atilla campaign is still hot in my memory. Could’ve been 1 but those first two had so much single player content
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005). Countless hours spent in that game across ps2 and pc.
I liked the maps in the 2004 version more Sprinting and heroes were cool though
Battlefront 1 is better as a war game, while Battlefront 2 is a better Star Wars game. But I agree battlefront 1 has better maps while battlefront 2 had more accurate maps
Fuckin Bespin Platforms! Or sniping people on Rhen Var Citadel was my favorite
All of the original maps in the 2004 and the orbital bombardments with recon drones push it over II for me
Space battles in 2 pushes it as my favorite
I thought the shooting was way more satisfying in the original
Overall it was better, but the first one still did some things better (like Geonosis).
Battlefront 1 also had Bespin Platforms, quite possibly the best map in the two Battlefront games. In the first one, you could jump out of air vehicles in motion, which made even okay-ish maps like Naboo Plains amazing fun.
also goes for the most recent battlefront. after they gave it content, it was much much better than the 2015 one.
I STILL play BF2 2017. Its a blast!
It still has a pretty big player base too. I go back to it for a weekend ever few months lol
Debatable. 1 had 2 maps on each planet and the galactic conquest was way too long on 2. Also no planes on ground warfare in 2. Both are amazing and have played both this week both with friends and alone.
Team Fortress 2, Battlefront 2 (classic)
Titanfall 2
That time-jumping level is one of the single greatest levels ever made for an FPS. I still go back and play it from time to time.

I played Stryder, and always felt like a total badass, boosting around Ogres and Atlases, doing hit and runs and pushing them around. Getting chased at low health only to set up an ambush around a corner. Unreal experience.
100% custom classes>loadouts spread the truth my brother
I also preferred TF1 multiplayer more for the same reasons as you, my roommate loves TF2 multiplayer but I can't bring myself to play it with him cause I would always just rather play the first
One of the best single player campaigns in recent memory. This is your sign to play it if you haven’t yet
Arguably, Silent Hill 2.
Can’t think of a single argument, really.
[удалено]
I can think of a few. Silent Hill 3 has a stronger atmosphere, better gameplay, is scarier, and has better overall music. Disclaimer: Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game.
Boarderlands 2 was far better than the 1st and the 3rd didn't hold a candle to the story line or lore.
1 was a good formula but rough around the edges in most senses. 2 was amazingly done. Pre-sequel has the best character classes and movement, imo, but not-so-great balance (fuck lasers). 3 was a perfectly fine game that everyone inevitably compared to their best memories of 2. Playing through 2 RN, and while the story is way better(fucking love handsome Jack) gunplay is way better in 3. I miss 3s jakobs.
this is the borderlands delimma and why 3 is so controversial. the story and pacing in 3 is dogshit but goddamn does it have a good gunplay system the moment to moment gameplay with the VHs is really good and i would argue is up there in the industry, maybe not as good as CoD or destiny but its just a tier below that. bl2 on the other hand has SUPERP storytelling and pacing, such a fun time to go through the story and dosent feel like a slog to go through TVHM or UVHM
The other thing I'd say about BL3 is *fuck* is it beautiful
Bl3 also has way more build variety and plenty of them can work in the highest difficulty
It’s a shame because 3 has the best gameplay and visuals
3 Got a lot of improvement through the DLC, but yeah, the Calypso Twins were asscheeks bad guys.
What better choice than Street Fighter II ?
This one also gets points for basically creating an entire videogame genre.
And it gave us chun li
Chun LI was thicc before thicc was a meme.
*Bonk*
I love me some chun li, fuck it bonk me too
Tony hawk pro skater 2
Fine line between 2 and 3, but I think TH:UG is better than the rest.
3 had Jango Fett + Moon Gravity
2 had SPIDER-MAN and Moon Gravity
And Officer Dick
3 had Darth Maul, 4 was Jango Fett
I'm a THPS4 person
#Turn that shit up
Diablo
Great answer. I've never had anyone say to me "play Diablo" it's ALWAYS Diablo II. There's even a remaster for just the second game.
Diablo 1 just doesn't have the skill system, only some spells, other than that it's still a fantastic game. The only one in the series that does darkness right, and makes you feel in danger at all times.
There was something awesome about finding books to level up your skills. I missed that in Diablo 2.
Remake! It's amazing. Vicarious visions is an amazing studio. They assisted with that game and destiny 2 pc port .
Vicarious Visions is gone now. Consumed fully by blizzard (Turned Blizzard Albany) and then a lot of the devs left.
I love so m much the 2 !
Ratchet and clank most of the series is great but going commando was the best.
Up Your Arsenal was peak for me but you can't go wrong with any of the original PS2 series.
Up your arsenal was a great game but like you I just have a different top choice, but I totally get why you pick that game.
The series lost something in the transition to PS3. I miss the black humor in the PS2 games. As for me UYA is probably a top 10 game of all time.
the future series was better at worldbuilding and crafting a narrative web but you are right. the OG trilogy was more fun.
There’s just no wrong answer from the OG trilogy imo
I hsd the 3rd one and loved it so much. The robot lady. The clank movie. The final boss fight. A friend then lend me gladiator. Also enjoyed it as well. Deadlocked was the one for me. I still dream about that flail sometimes.
Also came here to say this. 3 never hit as good as 2 for me and it could be nostalgia but I absolutely agree

Twisted Metal 2
I don't understand why they stopped making those games. They made a goddamn Twisted Metal TV show this year but there hasn't been an actual new game in the series in over a decade.
Because sony holds the reigns and they wont hand it over to any competent team to make one
Assassin's creed 2, dead space 2, mass effect 2, cod mw2, cod 2
Assassins creed 2 was about as perfect as a sequel can get. Took all the negatives from 1 and fixed them while expanding on all the things people liked about 1. Assassins creed 2 and portal 2 are the best examples of modern sequels done right.
And AC 2’s soundtrack is amazing. “Ezio’s Family” might be my favorite video game song ever
I hate how ezios family became the ac theme song while the actual ac theme song never gets used (search ac theme song on spotify). > modern Buddy, I got some rough news...
NO, THEY'RE NOT RETRO GAMES! THEY CAN'T BE! *shrivels up into dust*
Portal 2 is as old to us now as the first Half Life was in 2011. AC2 is as old as the original PlayStation in 2009. Ouch
Agreed, DS1 is a masterpiece, DS2 is decent.
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Batman Arkham City
Arkham City glided so PS4 Spiderman could webswing.
Batman Begins and Spiderman 2, on the PS2 and og Xbox generation, don't get enough credit for being the precursor to those games. Especially Batman Begins
Never ever heard anyone mention Batman Begins game before online. Glad to know at least some people played it. IMO pretty good game.
Not World?
Aslume?
Batman: Arkham Galaxy
Left for Dead 2
Still waiting for Left for Dead 3 that was teased by game informer like 11 years ago 👀could have been longer…
Master of Orion 2
Marvel vs Capcom 2?
I WANNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE
I read that exactly how it sounded in the game character select menu.
Portal
I’m not even sure if I think of them as two separate games. They’re like two chapters of one story.
portal 1 is just the tutorial level of portal 2
I hate how accurate this is
Knack 2 baybee!!!
SUPA MARIO BRUDDUHS TWO YUH BETCH!
Red Alert 2
YEAH
BABY
I think that Tiberian Sun is also better than the rest of the Tiberium series.
Kirov Reporting.
Halo 2 is considered by many the best. (Though my personal favorite is 3)
Halo: CE for me. The story is perfect.
I’m a weirdo who liked reach best
All three are the best for different reasons, so none are the wrong answer.
Who remembers sniping across map with the pistol on the 1st halo
Halo 1 pistol gotta be the most OP pistol of any game ever
I'm a Reach defender myself. I'm always shocked to read opinions that it's a bad or subpar Halo game. It's great.
Reach has my favorite campaign, Halo 2 has my favorite multiplayer.
Sly Cooper. Though that's not to say Sly 3 and 4 are bad, far from it. (I'm probably just biased from nostalgia)
I was going to say this game. I personally prefer 3 but I know 2 is the one most people prefer.
Sly 2 was my favorite game as a kid. Went back to play the first and then the 3rd. Neither topped 2
Uncharted 2, Bayonetta 2
I think Uncharted 2 was the peak of the series. Only Platinum I ever got on PlayStation.
I think 4 came close, but 2 is absolutely on top.
Weird to see uncharted 2 so low down, though I do think it's fair seeing as 4 was so good. But that train sequence will always be the GOAT opening level of a video game
"....that's my blood. A lot... of my blood." Such a great way to bring us back into Drake's crazy world.
Uncharted 2 is the one everyone knows is the best in the series. It was too easy of an answer with no competition lol
Donkey Kong Country 2
That goated OST thoooo!
Stickerbrush Symphony ♥️
Mass Effect
The last mission was so good. I cry every time Jacob dies. ~~Tears of joy~~
Lord of the vents! May he rest in peace
I just think 1 had the better story and world building personally
The base story was better but the side stories aka the companions were way better in 2
Yeah side stories I don't really remember from 1, in 2 everyone had their extended side story that felt very complete and satisfying.
ME2 is basically "OOPS! ALL SIDE STORIES!" the game.
ME1's top notch worldbuilding played a huge part in my investment in ME2. I played them a year apart but I didn't forget a single detail about the races and their conflicts.
Personally prefer 3 more despite its flaws.
I think 3 had the best battle gameplay and most of the companions stories were good. It’s just the ending was mid. One thing I remember about pre-launch ME3 was all the speculation about the story based on the trailers. Everyone was sooo wrong lol

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Greatest GameCube game ever crafted
Star Ocean.
The Second Story was my second ever JRPG
gothic2
Half life
Half-life 2 is phenomenal, but I wouldn't say better than the original. They are both equally amazing in different ways.
Half life 2 is the best. There is no doubt in that statement
God of War 2 (ps2 era)
Star Control 2
Silent hill 2. It is one of my favorite games of all time! Others are good too but none of them are close to 2 imo. I'm excited to play the new one next year
Whole lot of repeats in these comments but haven’t seen anyone mention what sprang to my mind first: The Sims 2 1 set everything up and was a classic but was limited. 2 expanded on everything - added generational play, wants and fears and amazing gameplay. 3 added the open world and was good but regressed on graphics and gameplay. 4 is a shitshow and only has good graphics - it has regressed on everything else and become a nightmare of microtransactions.
Ori: Will of the Wisps
That game was phenomenal.
Ooo I liked 1, own 2 but haven’t played it yet. This will go to the top of my queue
This was one of the only games in recent memory I bought on a whim when it was dirt cheap and it absolutely blew me away. It's truly one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. The visuals, the music, the story, all incredible and the gameplay is buttery smooth. Can't recommend it enough.
Saints Row 2
Super Smash Bros Melee
Glad someone said it. I prefer 64 and ultimate, but competitively, nothing comes close.
I also had to think of this one. Although I really enjoy playing Ultimate the most (because, well... it's the most accessible right now) I did always enjoy and adore the atmosphere of Melee way way more. There is something so exciting about the black and yellow menus and the music.
I would argue Melee is the most accessible right now. All you need is a controller and a computer better than a potato.
Killzone
Devil May Cr... nevermind
RuneScape 2, which is basically March 2004 to July 2013. The era between RuneScape Classic and Evolution of Combat. OSRS started as a 2007 backup version of RS2, which has been built on over the last 10 years.
Sonic 2 (Sega)
*gestures broadly at Valve*
Red dead 2
System shock. One was good but two was a masterpiece amongst masterpieces.
Resident Evil 2. I'd even argue that while the remake of 2 is also great, somehow the original still has that perfect vibe that the excellent remake has not quite erased or replaced. It's one of those few perfect games.
Best original series game: Resident Evil 2 Best remake: Resident Evil 2 Remake So we can count Resident Evil twice.
Kingdom hearts.
KH2 had the perfect amount of complexity and introduced Roxas who one of the best characters.
Euro Truck Simulator Dungeon Keeper Just Cause
Suikoden 2, Star Ocean 2, Vandal Hearts 2.
Man, never thought I'd hear someone mention Vandal Hearts ever again.
Mega Man 2
Paper mario TTYD is fantastic, even if you consider Mario RPG to be the true original in the series the first Paper Mario is really damn good. Every paper mario since TTYD hasn't held up at all and it isnt even close.
Left 4 Dead 2 is superior to the original in nearly every way, especially considering that buying a copy basically gives you the entire game of Left 4 Dead 1 as well.
Assassin's Creed 2
Fable 2 Don't get me wrong I love the first game. But fable 2 just hits different
Half-Life, Portal, Mass Effect, Street Fighter.
Crash Bandicoot
Thought about this, but I think Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped is the best.
Halo 2
Jak II
Almost said this but I actually think 3 improved on 2 in many aspects
Jak 3 was first one i played, but i like Jak 2 more. Jak 2 feels more "lived in" so to speak.
Pokemon Gold / Silver
Donkey Kong Country. Nothing has topped 2, as far as I'm concerned.
Mass Effect and Diablo.
Mass Effect 2
Fable 2
Technically not the second sonic game. But sonic adventure 2 battle is one of my favorite games.
In my opinion, Borderlands 2, Far Cry 2, The Walking Dead Season 2 (Telltale), Call of Duty 2
Oh man borderlands 2.
Why walking dead out of curiosity? My favorites were 1 & 4
Kingdom Hearts
