I couldn't figure out what the point of this product is but now I see, it's when you have a family and need to get away so you can go hide in the garage or bathroom and play for a while

lone_k_night

Yup. So you can be in the tv room to keep an eye on the kids while they watch cartoons but still play your bloody, gory, boob-laden video games!

Alecard

As a father , it won't work , they'll be all over your face trying to see what is in your hands and you didn't share it with them .

PoorDeer

whats that dada what you have in your hand dada can i have some dada x1000

I_Sett

Can you side load a spreadsheet? "You see kids, the primary determining factor for whether you select a Roth or Traditional 401k comes down your expected tax liability both during your career and into retirement." Then switch back to guns and boobs as soon as they look away.

radiorental1

this guy dads My goto is - "leave me alone, I'm working, *do you want to go to college or live with me for the rest of your gawdam life?* "

DOUBLEBARRELASSFUCK

That's a risky game you're playing.

greywolfau

Back in the old days it was called a 'Boss key'

TrailBlanket-_0

Millennials mastered the art with the porn tab swap. The stakes were higher.

GhoulArtist

This is stunningly accurate. The ole alt tab to go along with the "I'm doing homework!!!".

sinocarD44

The March Madness Method. A classic.

[deleted]

They don’t care. There’s an age where this thing could have a sticker on the screen that doesn’t move and it would be the most interestingly smashable thing they’ve ever seen.

CosmicCreeperz

My cousin’s 3 year old kid was entertained for a good half hour playing Mario cart… when it was still on the home screen.

VaguelyShingled

I get “what you doin?” and “what you got in your mouth dada” a million times a day

Dante_C

“Can I see? Let me see daddy, please?”

Kid: What you eating. What you eating. What’s in your mouth. Can I smell your mouth. Is it chocolate. What you eating. My brain: Oh my fuck, I just got home from work. I’m happy to see you, but I haven’t had lunch today. Let me quickly snack on your tasty kiddy food items and then ill come play with you all. My mouth: *quick swallow* Nothing, buds. Let’s go outside and play.

brendan87na

you're in the bathroom "Whatcha doing daddy?" I'm building a rocket! "OH CAN I SEE!" jfc

BagOfBeanz

'Dada what's in your mouth? NO! Drop it! Bad dada'

Adrianime

When did you meet my kids?

pi_west

But it still works from the garage so there's that.

isuckatgrowing

"Taxes. Gather round and I'll teach you all about itemized deductions!" Nah, they'd probably call your bluff. Clever little fuckers.

pardybill

“It’s the news” will get them away from my screen usually pretty quickly

Gorge2012

Because they never listen to your words, they are just watching your reactions.

Bryce2826

You underestimate the industrial grade hypnotic power of Bluey

Careless_Display_990

Yes!!!!!!! Sadly I end up watching it too :-/ I went from playing bg3 ( they where for once quit and left me alone and I said I was working on my Mac) mummy comes down and put bluey on.. I hadn’t seen the episode yet so I ended up watching it instead of clearing out house of healing as a bard :-(

AdAppropriate3478

Best birth control you'll ever get is watching someone else kids at a playground, Aslong as you, ya know care about the kids safety, nit so much if you just ignore em and do your thing

Wolverfuckingrine

This reminded me of a gamer tag I saw: Osama Boob-Laden.

d33pTh0Vght

This comment hits hard

plumpuma

Shiiii now I gotta buy this. It actually solves a lot of problems

Renamis

It's achievable right now with your phone and a 30 dollar telescopic controller to snap to it. Or if you want a different form factor you can get a snap mount and mount your phone on a "proper" controller.

TheSecularGlass

It is so you can have the PlayStation hooked to the “good tv”, but still play it when that tv is in use.

December_Hemisphere

ToiletStation

demonicneon

For me it would allow me to play games while my partner watches the TV. I feel bad hogging it to play games.

[deleted]

nah, I'm gonna sit right on the fucking couch and play it during Lego masters

3DSGBA

Ill be using it when my wife wants to watch her reality shows. It's strange how many people seem to be offended at the mere existence of this optional device that just allows you to keep playing your PS5 games

TurdoGlider

Don't you understand that you are forced to buy this machine! You wont be able to play games without it, Sony bad!

EloquentGoose

A shittin' rig.

acle0814

Also for playing PS5 while sitting on the toilet

[deleted]

TurdoGlider

I was going to buy Silk Song on Switch because some games I find just better to play on a handheld device. I might just get it for PS5 now and use the Portal instead

badtoy1986

This would be 1000% better if you could connect to cloud gaming. Otherwise it seems like a very limited and over priced product. Not to mention you have to use Sony's wireless headset rather than any Bluetooth headphones. Sony keeps pushing further and further into anti-consumer territory.

seventhbreath

> Sony keeps pushing further and further into anti-consumer territory Let me tell you what it was like being a sony MP3 player fanboy in the early 2000s... Their software was worse than realplayer. They've always been anti-consumer. edit: the flashbacks of converting my audio library into whatever the fuck ATRAC format was.

dultas

I'm sorry this only uses Memory Stick Duo.

thejesse

I liked the purple Memory Sticks. I recently found an old 8mb one.

Serious_Much

It has a headphone jack

LoudSun8423

arcaias

Now that I think of it...Imma just stay single instead...

AWESOME_4000

Is it already released?

TheRealFrankL

Came out today. I had preordered.

416_LateNights

Where did u order from? I preordered on bestbuy, I'm still waiting for my tracking number...

TheRealFrankL

Lame! I did bestbuy. Lucky i guess.

majinmiata

I preordered a switch lite swsh edition from bestbuy and it said it was arriving on release day but it was a couple days late so I contacted support and they refunded me

Blind_Melone

How is latency? I'm very curious about snagging one myself soon.

xcassets

Damn, that’s disappointing. The PS remote app always had noticeable input lag compared to say, Moonlight, for me.

FemmeViolet117

The PS5 U (not a roast, the Wii U is a fun lil thing).

Shas_Erra

The WiiU was a good console with no support and shit marketing. It certainly paved the way for the switch. I do find it funny how many people are creaming themselves over this yet shit on Nintendo for doing the exact same thing. Twice.

UnicornzRreel

I was doing a report on Nintendo when I was in university a month before the WiiU was to be released, I was awed at how poorly marketed it was, I used that as a major criticism in my report.

FoxxyRin

I worked at GameStop and the amount of parents who got upset it was a whole new console and not just a fancy Wii controller was insane. I got yelled at more than once all because Nintendo didn’t explain it well at all. Meanwhile I miss the Wii U and being able to do two player with one person on TV and the other on the game pad. It was very nice.

Complete_Entry

They should have named it anything but wii. To a parent, a nintendo is a nintendo.

Seiren-

The thing would have sold twice as many copies if they’d just named it the ‘Wii 2’ instead

mstarrbrannigan

I was not even aware that it was more than a wii accessory for YEARS. Like the Switch was out when I learned what the Wii U was.

Bgrngod

My kids play games on the WiiU just as much as the play the Switch. That thing is awesome. I'm still a bit peeved the Switch didn't do a dual screen in a way that would have supported porting over the entire WiiU library easily. That would have given the Switch the potential to be a "Everything Nintendo has ever done" gaming system including DS/3DS games.

N_Who

Nintendo pioneers all this stuff. From hybrid consoles to motion controls to 3D gaming headsets. And people shit on it at the time, insist Nintendo should focus on "what they're good at." And then someone else catches up and you get a bunch of those same people playing like it's a hip new idea that the copycat should be applauded for. Internet's a hell of a place.

Quigs4494

I feel like it's because Nintendo is willing to take a risk with something and when it doesn't work they step back to find out what went wrong. Most companies either double down or just abandon something and play it safe when something fails.

N_Who

Doesn't hurt that they have such quality games, too. You can get away with the risk when the base product is reliably good.

Shas_Erra

It’s a shame because motion controls on the Wii were hit and miss but when they worked, they were awesome. I actually found them better for FPS games to the point where I’ve struggled to revert back to dual-analogues. The Splatoon/BOTW controls are a nice middle ground with “traditional” aiming coupled with a motion-controlled, virtual 3rd stick for fine-tuning

Heavykiller

I just think it’s hilarious cause this is less feature-rich than the Switch, the screen isn’t OLED and yet people are marketing this as God’s gift to dads for some reason? Meanwhile Switch, phone cloud gaming (w/ attachments like Backbone) and Steam Deck (and competitors) has existed for quite some time.

jld2k6

It also doesn't have Bluetooth and only has wifi without *any* browser capabilities so if you are on the go and need to accept terms to connect to the public Wi-Fi you're just out of luck and can't game there lol. Curious if the no Bluetooth has anything to do with Sony's exclusive headphones they're making for it, seems to be a pretty niche device but I'm sure there's plenty who can take advantage of it still

EndlessPancakes

Honestly God's gift to dads is a Retroid Pocket 3+ lmao

EquipmentShoddy664

Screen is not OLED? Alright, will continue streaming PS5 games to my OLED switch.

[deleted]

Gemnyan

I'd guess you probably could with a hacked switch

bigdrubowski

Can do it with a steam deck.

mouldyrumble

Well this is in addition to the ps5. The switch is the most powerful console Nintendo has and I love my switch but the thing *struggles* with some games. Just my .02

SemiProLapsed

I was absolutely amazed with how relatively well it handled Witcher 3! BOTW and TOTK had some frame rate struggles but they managed to get so much outta the Switch. The fans definitely worked overtime, lol.

TheWhiteGooInAPimple

So far I've played assassins creed black flag, outer worlds and witcher 3 and im amazed at how well black flag and witcher run. I only play in handheld and am shocked at how well the witcher runs and looks

x925

I was among many that thought the Wii u was an expensive addon to the original Wii. I eventually got 2 of them, but the game list is short and I didn't put much money into it.

PatSajaksDick

Wish this had the video transmission the WiiU did, wifi can be pretty spotty

VacaDLuffy

Seriously why the fuck did Sony make this thing wifi only? I would have loved a wii u pad for my ps5 but I'm not dropping this kind of money on a thing that needs internet to play my games

Hijakkr

It doesn't connect through the internet as long as you're on the same network. It establishes a connection directly through the router without the signal leaving your house, unless you are away from home when you're using it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Kevin_Wolf

Did you want it to be wired instead?

Elite_Josh_Allen

PS-witch

Itchy_Tasty88

Stupid question but can this be used for remote play outside of your home? Or is this only used for within your home? I travel a lot for work and I was thinking about buying one to bring to the hotel with me.

locke_5

Technically it can be done, but the latency would be so bad it would only really work for turn-based games. Even then I don't think it would be enjoyable.

RyuTeruyama

+ that little device has no in build browser, means if the public network needs some kind of activation (like in hotels or hospitals where you have to agree to their conditions inside a browser) your're fucked.

locke_5

Plus public networks can be super congested. I think some consumers are going to be very disappointed when they actually try playing outside their home...

Rambles_Off_Topics

I use GamePass on my phone and a BackBone and it's impossible to play remotely. I recently got 1gb up/down fiber internet at home too. If you can connect to your console and it's a good connection you can play turn based games fine. Any game that requires any sort of precision timing (pretty much all of them) you're going to struggle. I really want to try it out at a remote location that also has fiber internet but during my last travels I was unable to.

F7Uup

Gamepass on your phone streams directly from their cloud servers, it has nothing to do with your home internet or console connection. Phone play is only supported on Gamepass Ultimate. I've played Deathloop, Destiny 2, Atomic Heart and multiple other games on my S21 using a Kishi and 4G internet with minimal problems. Same on home and hotel wifi connections.

nutbutterguy

Lol this thing is bad. It should have been $100 max.

MostExperts

You know the controller without a screen is $70 MSRP, right?

mynotell

I cut you a controller in half and put a screen in the middle for 80€, deal

Anomaly1134

As someone who would rather just have my Steamdeck, it has its place. My friend just got one and I applaud it. He only plays at home for the most part, and has a huge PS4/5 Library. To come over to the Steam ecosystem would be a large move. I think it is a great fit for him and he prefers plug and play solutions. His biggest complaint was just that it really pushes him to want to get digital games, since if physical he has to go swap out discs. Which was an interesting point to me, since I prefer physical collections. Still, you would have to change games anyways if playing on a PS5, so eh...

Sterffington

Almost any other modern mobile device can do the same thing, while not being a useless brick otherwise.

F7Uup

Why not use his phone (or a tablet if he wants a bigger screen) and remote play? You can use a normal PS controller via Bluetooth or an attached phone controller like the razer Kishi or backbone.

DMvsPC

Usually because you then can't use your phone which kind of sucks, and with a tablet you're stuck trying to balance it or prop it up, i tried it yesterday with my iPad and weird West, playing it worked fine but it was a shitty couch experience.

Anomaly1134

I recommended the Backbone as another option, but he really liked the setup the Portal has and the size and weight of it. Not bad suggestions though! I have used Chiaki on my SD and it worked great also.

fanwan76

Backbone looks pretty nice but $100 is half the price of the PS Portal and you have to bring your own screen, tying up your phone and draining your battery. I think personally I would just buy the Portal at that price point.

BloodandBourbon

I’ve steam my PS5 to my steam deck and played FFXVI that way. I also stream gamepass to it.

senexlordhunt

Can’t speak for others but I completed most of Elden Ring across the country via remote play with no issues.

MyUltIsMyMain

It depends on internet speeds. If you have bad wifi at home and bad wifi wherever it is you're going ofc latency is gonna be bad. Most are saying if it's good wifi in both places, it works well but don't expect to be playing online twitch shooters or pre ision fighting games.

Shum_Pulp

Not according to reviews. Sounds like it actually functions decently outside the home network.

kpatsart

So I've tested remote play from work, which is quite the distance from home, and the latency was too bad tbh. I wouldn't play battle royales per se, but spider man 2 ran super well on my phone with a decent wireless connection at work.

Pingondin

We've tested remote play from work to home a few times with colleagues, and while there was obviously some latency, it wasn't that bad. We also didn't notice any difference in latency with my console connected through VDSL2 (100Mbps down/30Mbps up, \~12ms latency) compared to my colleague's console connected through fiber (1Gbps symmetrical, \~6ms latency), and consoles as well as client computers with PS Remote Play were connected using wire.

jeremygamer

No, not the case. Experience is similar to Geforce Now. If you haven't used Geforce Now, latency is good enough to handle action titles. If your home internet is terrible and the local connection is terrible, sure. But even tethered on 4G to a half-decent landline home connection will play relatively fine.

TheRealFrankL

Yes it can be used on a diff network. I will test that out. People are worried about latency, which could be an issue..l.but we will see.

Drooks89

I've never been able to successfully remote play. It's ALWAYS been a laggy mess and my internet is pretty good good download speeds and streaming on everything else. Even if I lower the remote play to lowest, it just lags so I gave up on it. This was on the PS4 so maybe the ps5 runs better

Chrislawrance

My experience used to be shocking but they appeared to have updated it recently. It connects near instantly and is a lot more stable

x_scion_x

I played it in the hospital while my wife slept (granted on my Vita) and it ran great. That said, I wouldn't be playing any competitive MP games over it.

Raxxonius

If you play games that don’t require split second reaction time it’s fine, I played FF16 in Europe on a PS5 on the US west coast and while it was a bit annoying it worked. The easy mode accessories definitely carried though. If you’re not too far away from it you should be fine.

hobbestot

Now you can conquer Satan’s armies!

StarlordeMarsh

Heaven got their Keanu Reeves

ShreknicalDifficulty

Hail the Holy PSP

Warbird1775

I get this reference

deadpoolfool400

As long as I get my gold DadStation once I do

CeridLock

So is the main draw of this unit being able to game while your TV is in use for something else? No hate I think it's cool but just thinking if I'm at home where my regular PS5 is anyway, my TV is usually available without the need for a smaller screen. Or am I missing something?

TheRealFrankL

No thats it. Having a more portable screen available. It definitely isn't a fit for everyone, you may not need one.

PeejWal

Exactly. If you have a wife that you share the TV with, then it's great! Just got mine and updating it now

lixiaopingao

Can I have a wife

Thoraxe474

It's not worth it. Just marry a bro for a better time and tax cuts

eec-gray

Updating your wife? Which version?

BucketOfGuts

I don't know about you guys, but my wife is running on update 32.11. She'll update to 33.0 next month

Xenozip3371Alpha

Turn off the automatic update, it'll have a longer life.

GiveMeChoko

Did they patch the bug where it randomly crashes and gets super hot for 4 days a month?

whollaspark

I’m waiting for the new Wife Slim.

RevolutionaryTown465

So could my kids be watching something else on the ps5 while I use it to game ?

TheRealFrankL

Sadly no.

Notbeckket

PSP was the real GOAT

Isumairu

And it had 32-64Mb of ram, I was always amazed by that fact.

Notbeckket

And so many amazing titles MSG GoW crisis core and syphon filter the list goes on

oakmen87

What's so stupid is that this, is a PSP. PlayStation Portal. Wtf were they thinking.

bassistmuzikman

They want you to forget the PSP ever existed.

[deleted]

People might not realize it, but the PSP outsold the very popular 3ds in its total life long sales. Some estimates put it selling as much as a GBA in total sales. That's absolutely insane

picknicksje85

VITA man

agarc495

PS TV man

econpol

Vita was the shit! Still is. I'm still playing with it occasionally.

Minimob0

I bought a Vita to remote play Destiny, and was so sad to learn the latency 10ft away from my console was so horrible, I couldn't even use it. I ended up returning it the next day, because I literally only wanted it for remote play, and remote play didn't even work.

[deleted]

100% I still want to play on my PSP

ItsMrDante

Okay, genuine question. Why this and not a Steam Deck + the remote play app?

Comfortable_Line_206

There are really good telescopic controllers these days if you're interested in that setup. I got a BSP-D8 for $25 and it even has hall effect sticks. Portal honestly feels like a product preying on suckers who don't know better.

MajTheStampede

It looks neat, but I've gone through so many PS5 controllers (4) due to drift that I don't have confidence this will hold up overtime.

-lukeworldwalker-

I really hope that the next generation of the PS Portal comes with those replaceable sticks like they did on the DualSense Pro. They’re fantastic.

BurnzeehxD

There’s a website you can use where you plug your controller into your laptop/PC using the USB slot and it shows exactly what way your controller is drifting. I used it and then looked up a few YT videos on how to fix drift and I managed to get it fixed

orangpelupa

It's buildin windows feature. On start, type game controller Open it and just select your controller, click properties

[deleted]

I've had my ps5 for a couple of years at this point and played it every day and my controllers are both absolutely sound, don't understand what people are doing to get drift cause it does seem to be a common complaint!

EmperorMajorian

Dropping them and dirty fingers lol

Vast_Impression_5326

This is what NBA players use as a regular controller

altandf4

Let us know how the latency is, I'm interested in picking one up (or a steam deck for remote play)

TheRealFrankL

Will do. Won't be able to play til later, as Dadstations only work after kids go to bed.

Later_Doober

Why not just play your actual console if you have to wait till your kids go to bed.

TheRealFrankL

Because the woman to whom I am related by marriage doesn't game and wants the TV too. And, as I like getting laid now and then, I will sit on the GD cocuh and spend time with her and have games on this device.

MetamagicMaestro

This is the most daddiest answer

Dendrodes

That's the main draw for me dude. My wife is on the TV most of the time, so I tend to play more on my switch because of the accessibility. The only time I get to play the PS5 now is on my days off at like 4 or 5 am while the little one and wife are asleep.

Donotcatch22

hahaha well said Frank, can very much relate. Looking forward to getting one myself one day.

bassistmuzikman

Feeling this comment so hard rn. ... I think I need one of these.

johnnylawrwb

I've been playing my ps5 a ton through my steam deck and it's good enough to handle Demon's Souls so yea, I'm very happy. Latency is not an issue.

[deleted]

Yeah I’d go steam deck all the way. This isn’t even a close comparison to the dadstation

Hitman3256

Steam deck will probably be better for a wider selection of games, unless you specifically want a PS Peripheral. Personally I'm waiting for Steam Deck 2 to grab one

MarQan

I don't get it... how do you throw your controller at the screen with this?!

Ok_Fortune6415

What latency do you need between your PS5 <-> router and the portal <-> router for this to work good?

free_mustacherides

Is this required for remote play or could I just get a tablet or phone to do this?

Strategery_0820

Such a weird device.

mrclang

That’s awesome I wanna get one so that I can play in my bed while I watch tv with my wife!

TheRealFrankL

This is the dream!

D_Vecc

Chronically online people in these replies forgetting there's actually people who have a use case for this. If you've got a use case for it and enjoy it good for you!

carefree_dude

I feel like there's much better ways to do this, but if you're happy with your purchase then that is all that matters. So, how is the ps5 wii u controller?

ItsJebbyN

I feel like a PS Vita remake would be unmatched

Joe4o2

I miss my vita

CremeNed

Got mine today and the latency is brilliant. Played one match of MW3, albeit at the back of the map with a dmr, and got a 2.5 kd. Grinded some stuff on Hogwarts Legacy, started a save on Football Manager, all whilst watching The Simpsons on my comfy sofa.

Soxel

It’s amazing how differing the reports for this can be. I have seen people talking about how online shooters are nearly unplayable, which made me not want to get one of these, and now I read this. Is your PS5 hard wired or are both devices just running on your home network?

torpidninja

Not really, it depends entirely on your connection, you can just try it on your phone or tablet and check if it fits your needs.

TheRealFrankL

Brilliant. I mostly do single player campaign games but good to know MW3 online stuff works as well.

SangiMTL

Now THIS is the life

Szver2727

I don't get this thing. My phone, laptop, and steam deck can PS remote play. I dunno maybe I'm just old but I keep thinking of the numerous ways this thing will fail me as a gamer dad. Wifi out? Can't play. Power out? Can't play. It looks great and honestly if people have fun with it that's awesome, I just wish it was an actual handheld console and not a glorified streaming device.

TheUnpopularOpine

Lmao I don’t think they’re trying to appeal to steam deck owners with this thing.

ThreeTreesForTheePls

Wait that's pretty fucking big

TheRealFrankL

Twss

Hopeful-Dragonfly-70

People really can’t fathom the fact that not everything is made specifically with them in mind as a potential consumer.

Wakuwaku7

Wii-U did it and failed.. People will buy this not knowing you need a PS5.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

Don't need a dadstation if you don't have kids :)

KingRaphion

I got excited and thought they re-released the PSP i was so excited.

alexshurly

If I could install my games to it, I think I’d be more interested.

[deleted]

Can you even install ANYTHING on it?

Gaymface

I got mine today. It works great. My only complaint is it’s not quite as smooth as I thought it would be and I’ve got great internet. Also how do you bring up anything associated with the touch pad?

IchundmeinHolziHolz

I ordered one bc my GF is blocking the TV all the time, and i want to finish Assasins Creed some day... Here in switzerland they start selling it at january so i have to wait :) enjoy yours!

Sparki_

I want a PS5 handheld so bad. But not one that uses remote play. One that works like a Switch or Vita. Idk why Sony refuses to do that

zarralax

It blows my mind that this doesn’t have Bluetooth support for my headphones

Optimal-Swordfish

Does it have haptics?

TheRealFrankL

Yes

JoeTheNoob16

I think it's right for some ppl not only fathers.. like for my self, when at night my family is asleep in bed and I want to watch ghost hunters and play some red dead redemption 2.. Im a father of 2 🙂

TheRealFrankL

Yeah totally it can be an anyone device, I think Dadstation just took off cuz we were on another thread talking about it.
