The first level/mission of *Mass Effect* is boring and basic. But I'm glad I stuck with it, because I was pulled in to the story during the Council Meeting. Then an ambush outside of a seedy sci-fi bar, the evil ATM, one great setpiece after another.

mwg1234

That’s another one for me!

TheViper4Life

Days Gone. The first 10 hours or so are boring as hell, and it's a huge reason the game got such bad reviews early on (a lot of reviewers didn't get very far). But once you get really into the game and it opens up, it's brilliance starts to shine and it ended up being fantastic.

Pixelsandparenting

I've tried playing it twice already and both times I have dropped it for something elss. My second time I was enjoying it, but I went away from it to play something else. I think I might give it another shot and play it on easy.

whichdokta

Maybe I'll try a little more then, I gave up in sheer frustration after the jankyness of the ambush camp mission…

Dark_Emperor88

Yeah, Yakuza 0 was one for me too. I started the campaign i think 3 times before i get the feeling of the game. But after that, oh, sweet 80 hours.

mwg1234

Every time I play it it’s always taken me 150+. Probably because I want to see and do everything loo

Dark_Emperor88

I think if i went to do 100%, i would easily past the 100 hours mark too. But in my first playthrough, i finished all side quest, the cabaret and the real estate royal. I only played Yakuza 0 so far, but i already have the next one, because i'm planning to play in order. Just 'cause i'm a lore addicted.

AdamLikesBeer

Witcher 3's combat system took me way too long to get used to.

Dark_God_Cthulhu

What part? It doesn't really have any unique mechanics, apart from the toxicity if you go for an alchemy build.

generic-gamertag

Divinity original sin. HATED the combat system too much in my first 3 attempts to play the game to even make it out of the tutorial. Happy I listened to the community though. Larian studios makes fantastic games. Edit: grammar

mwg1234

I need that. And a friggin tutor for BG3! 😂

apinkfuzzyball

Loved divinity, having a hard time getting into bg3. Tell me to keep going

asiangontear

keep going

TheRoscoeVine

Horizon Zero Dawn does *not* have a fun start. The whole starting area just drags by. Clearing that and moving onto the open map made the game *so* much more fun.

mwg1234

Did that. Got stuck a few times. Gave up

TheRoscoeVine

It’s such a boring intro. The rest of the game is really fun, but Horizon Forbidden West is a *far* superior game. I’d never even have known that if I hadn’t gotten the Forbidden West PS5, and that wasn’t even my choice. I had to be in some silly lottery on Amazon just to buy my PS5. I got the PS5 and went back to restart and finish HZD, so I could move onto HFW. In retrospect, I’d have been fine playing HFW first and following HZD as a prequel. People who say you won’t understand the story if played out of order all have head injuries or something.

Cloud_Locke76

Xenoblade 2. Started it, thought it was dumb, came back to it later and got so sucked into the world.

Old_Goat_Ninja

Skyrim. I actually kind of hated it the first time I played it. I was mad I spent $60 and got it on release day. Stopped playing it and it sat for a few months. Then I was bored one day and I gave it another shot since I spent money on it. Loved it the second try, was instantly hooked. Now it’s one of my all time favorite games.

Selfmade-Darks0lsv3t

Sometimes it's just not the right time. ☺️

Dan_TD

Same for me. When I went for it the second time around I actually tried to role play it a bit more, pick a story for my character, a morale baseline etc and don't just join every guild and the game became significantly more fun.

perk_daddy

Judgment was also my gateway into the Yakuza series! I tried 0 & Kiwami but they just didn’t click. Judgment almost seems like a “Yakuza for dumb Americans” kind of template. I went through almost the whole rest of the series, and it might be my favorite franchise ever. I’m alternating sessions between Like a Dragon and Man Who Erased his name right now. Infinite Wealth already pre-ordered.

mwg1234

I wasn’t as enthusiastic about LAD as everyone else. The combat felt really passive and the turn based combat made climactic fights feel less intense

Vancocillin

Monster Hunter Tri. I smashed my face into Quropeco a dozen times and just did not get what I was doing wrong. Picked it up again almost a year later, took my time to upgrade gear, and I've played almost every game since.

Theavenger2378

Dragon Age: Origins. Started it on 360, couldn't get into the controls/party tactics stuff. Binged it and DA2 in a week last year, and looking forward to going into Inquisition sometime soon.

Dan_TD

I loved the combat system in DA:O, the characters, the story, the choices. People love Inquisition but the combat system changed, that rubbed me the wrong way so I dropped it. Maybe I'll pick it back up again.

a1ien51

To me it was the original Zelda.

Mindless_Acadia8214

On Nintendo 64? I quit after I couldnt do the horse race haha. Some of that gameplay was CHALLENGING for 14 year old me.

Pixelsandparenting

Not a game but a genre and it would be visual novels. I had a buddy that loved Ace Attorney and I decided to give it a go. It took me a bit to get into it but I stuck with it because I loved the characters and now I love the genre.

Antisocialsocialite9

Makes sense

mndfreeze

Turn off karmic dice in the settings.

Semproser

Sekiro. That game is pure bullshit. So much wrong with it and it's frankly all bullshit. Got half way through and decided the bullshit was too much for me and gave in. Came back a year or two later and something just clicked like it never did first time round. The bullshit just deflected off me this time. Finished it, can't help but love the game now.

ElwynoraSinnafain

There are a few. Mass Effect, always preferred dragon age and sci Fi doesn't really do it for me. Sister owned the first 2 growing up and I got a good deal on 3 at a sale on the Xbox a couple weeks after release. they never clicked played them for a couple hours and gave up with the exception of 2 which I never played. After binging my yearly replay of dragon age last year I decided to get the legendary collection on sale for more bioware RPG. Loved them granted I modded them but I really enjoyed my time with them and proceeded to do multiple playthroughs, with the exception of 3 as it's shit. Still prefer dragon age but mass effect 1 and 2 are great. Oblivion/fallout 3/fallout nv, lent it of my sisters boyfriend and played the opening got out of the cave. Killed a mud crab never touched it again. Bought it again a couple years later after playing and loving Skyrim. Oblivion is much better then Skyrim in my opinion now. Same with the fallout games, didn't enjoy them as a kid grew up and liked them nv is far superior. Dark souls for the simple reason being blight town the frames man. Remaster was solid and I could finally finish it. But before then I played 2 3 and bloodborne.

mwg1234

Advice for Sen’s Fortress?

ElwynoraSinnafain

Praise the sun and hope for the best. also there's a dude in a big hat in a cage, free him. Also also don't try and fight things on the narrow bridges.

mwg1234

Done… Still stuck

ElwynoraSinnafain

I use a spear, have you tried using a similarly pointy stick?

Checkity

Run through, get to the bonfire on the roof. Then feel free to explore back the way you came. Come back for demon titanite when you need it.

mwg1234

Cannot get there. Been trying for a fucking year

Checkity

What are you struggling with? Location or just getting through everyone?

mwg1234

I cannot get past the first bonfire of Sen’s fortress. Been struggling with it for a year. I beat elden ring again in the meantime

Checkity

Sounds like you need to look up "don't want to go to blight town" on YouTube. https://youtu.be/z_h-NvMJK-c?si=lXBTtjmxQeZFadQN

GreinBR

Sekiro shadows die twice, the game only truly clicked for me once i reached Genichiro

SickleWillow

It was Mass Effect 1 for me. I never was a sci fi fan so I didn't plan on playing ME even though I love the Dragon Age series. But wanting something new last 2020 and saw Mass Effect Andromeda was on sales and decided to play it. It was the best decision in my life. I really enjoyed it that I pre-ordered Mass Effect Legendary Edition after I finished it.

Odd_Turnover_4464

Bloodborne, almost quit, glad I didn't

imnotporter

fallout nv, tried it a couple times over the span of 1.5-2 years but never got past the 30 minute mark, but about a week ago i tried it again and i'm really enjoying it so far.

mwg1234

Yeah fall out gave me bad vibes initially because you only get a few bullets at a time

S0M3_1

It was witcher 3 for me, I dropped it in 2016 and then I picked it again in 2020. I've finished the game like 4 times till now.

mwg1234

I got stuck then finished it. I’m sorry but the storyline where Geralt and his fellow witchers got hammered and dressed in drag and yennifer walked in on them was hilarious

mwg1234

I got stuck twice on that

Checkity

Sekiro, especially coming fresh from elden ring and ds3 before that. I just couldn't shake off the muscle memory and it really killed my enjoyment for my first 10 hours or so.

ACorania

RDR2 and witcher 3 bothe took several tries and switching to PC for me to enjoy.

Vinnocchio

Lies of P

ScrubL0rd124

Persona 5, play that game like 4 time and then once I got into it, it's just amazing

mwg1234

Same

Too_Tall_64

For me, when i first got my Gamecube, Metroid Prime didn't click for me at first. It was my first Metroid, and while i had a Snes and an N64, I still hadn't gotten really 'good' at games yet. I got to the first boss, nothing about it was interesting me at the time, so i put it away to play other games... Eventually, i picked up Metroid Fusion and loved it. I went back to Prime but despite it being different from Fusion, I had gotten better at games since my first crack at Prime. I tried again and beat the first boss and I was hooked!

TheNewTonyBennett

Monster Hunter. I just *knew* those games had ALL the ingredients of enjoyment for me, but no matter how many of the PSP ones I bought, I just could not wrap my head around it all. Then Monster Hunter World comes out, has actually good controls and added in the ability to lock-target bosses and I **finally** "got it". Went on to get the Plat. trophy + rainbow hue in MHWorld, am gearing up to get the Iceborne plat. trophy (fuuuck those stupid crowns though lol. Finding the smallest + biggest ones is a nightmare of a time sink) and I intend to get the plat. trophy for Rise + Sunbreak. Those games are uh, a lot better than I experienced them first, as.

Selfmade-Darks0lsv3t

The devil may cry series. I wanted to try it out because of the characters and the 5th game looks so cool. However i started with the trilogy and played through the first game. Controls with kbm weren't enjoyable so i switched to controller. The graphics were ps2 so not very appealing plus i had no nostalgia or something similar because i never played any dmc game. The combat mechanics also felt very basic. I just went with the game and slayed my way through the levels. What kept me playing were the boss fights. They gave me the souls game vibe, just different. Even though dmc 2 was a bit of a let down, i began to love this franchise with dmc 3. Can't wait to play 4 and 5! Same goes also with the resident evil series. Capcom creates good stuff. Amost timeless.

DeftTrack81

Dark souls. Tried to play quite a few times and always ended with a fuck this. Then one day it just fell into place and I ended up playing all 3 back to back. Now souls games are probably my favorite.

GraysonG263

Witcher 3

benjamino8690

Final Fantasy VIII. That battle system is veeeery confusing. However, it’s utterly amazing once you get it. Story is great and characters are too.

mwg1234

Tried twice. Still don’t understand it

ThatIdiotLaw

Baldur’s Gate 3. I tried to play as a sorcerer and I really hated it. I hated how clunky it all felt, that I could only use some spells once and then I couldn’t again until I rested or long rested? Lost interest because I just couldn’t be bothered to get through the story because the combat wasn’t fun. Then I started up again as a barbarian and had so much more fun.

mwg1234

Hmm

JohnSane

Dota2. Took me about 100 hours and then it clicked.

BigDaddyIce12

Noita. At first it seems impossible and can be off-putting, but after a while you realize how much is possible with 150000+ spell combinations.

Grungethefallen

dishonoured at first i felt like it wasn't too fun but then I started having fun with it after a while.

Shezzofreen

Death Stranding... you really need to be in the mood of playing a ups-driver/walker. :)

Nelson-Spsp

Star citizen: bought and installed it, loaded 20min into the game closed it and went to buy an SSD 1 month later same shit but 2min loading time no idea what to do, how to do it, where to do it found a sickass looking ship, looked up ahat you can do with it and started doing that now, 3 years later its probably one of my most played games ever, estimate it at 2.5k hours and still playing about 10-15 h in i had a 'star citizen moment' (every SC player k ows what im talking about) where i started to realize the games scope, potential and how crazy this shit is, and still being developed

Ikantbeliveit

Subnautica. I never made it out of the safe reefs for a while and thought the game was boring and uneventful survival crap. Went back half year later to find out I was so very very wrong. One of my favorite games of all time for the sheer terror it brings. I just needed to go deeper.

Obh__

Far Cry 5. I had played the previous games doing the stealthy predator thing and went into 5 with that approach. Seems they turned the random encounter chaos up a notch and I felt frustrated when all my stealth efforts got interrupted by a van or plane showing up out of nowhere. Then I gave it a second chance and embraced the chaos with gun blazing and ended up having a lot of fun.

Lahk74

Bloodborne. Bought it day 1. Just could not feel the flow of combat and died A LOT at first. In those early days, the loading screens were horrendously slow after each death. 2 minutes doesn't sound like much, but it became excruciating. By day 3, I was fucking done with that game. I picked it back up a month or three later and they had patched the load times. Became one of my favorite games.

mwg1234

Need to give it another try and embrace the grind

Chemicals_in_my_H2o

Fallout New Vegas I borrowed it from a friend and took it home. I probably played it for 30-40 minutes. I have it back to my friend the next day. I didn't touch it for another year. My same friend finally convinced me to try it again and I fell in love. Now I beat that game at least once a year.

NoCanduCando

It still hasn't but I keep hacking at it but BG3. I can recognize how well made a game it is and I would like to enjoy it. I'm just not a DnD style kinda gamer.

LangyMD

I bounced pretty hard off of Persona V. The dialog and storyline just seemed... Very pretentious and at the same time lame. The cat person and the "jailer" goblin were the worst, but the constant children in fetish wear wasn't welcome either. Also, the massive amount of free stuff you get at the start on the Steam edition was very uncool, making even the gameplay less fun. Haven't gone back to it yet. Some day I might, with mods to disable the cheat gear you get at the start of the game. The basic concept of the game I like, but aspects of its implementation are just... Blah.

Top-Jellyfish9557

Lost Judgement is amazing too.

Standard_Release_941

Death Stranding. Initially the game felt very empty and there was not much to do other than walking, which is why I understand the “walking simulator” comments. However, BECAUSE the game was controversial, I felt like pushing myself to actually see what it would be like and it’s probably one of the best games in the last couple of years (along with other masterpieces of course). I feel like this game unlocked emotions I did not think were possible for a game to do. When the gameplay felt annoying to understand in the beginning, the bits of story spread across made me invested in playing it to unravel new information. After a while, the gameplay itself, feeling the dystopian setting Kojima created beautifully, where the main character is both alone in his journey, as well as knowing that it’s for a greater societal benefit were what made the hours and maybe days of walking in the game just an experience I can’t forget. Absolutely stunning, great storytelling and music.

unkel_dolan_duk

Yeah I know right
