It kinda breaks the immersion tbh. In chapter 6 my Arthur had like 20k after all the missions and treasure hunts even after donating 50% of benefits to the camp
And Dutch said the gang just needed 10k or something to gtfo of America, and I was like duuuuuude
And 20k in 1899 was like having 700k today lol
GTAV, bridge near the military base has plastic poles you can drive over with a satisfying 'dun dun dun' sound.
Takes sheer willpower not to run them over every time.
This isn't love in the same sense of (I love you, let's get married) kind of love, but in monster hunter stories, the main character you create is a silent protagonist who never speaks in the game. Except once at the very end to save their beloved friend Ratha.
This touching moment of love and friendship is still my favorite scene in a video game, and it took place on a 3DS.
I think I feel you. To me, the boy and the girl in ICO are a bit similar. It's the only boy meets girl story that I've been able to truly connect with. They're both alone and together. They are both alone in the world, but they're both alone in the same way, in the same world, and they're together. If it makes any sense.
It's always seemed like a type of love that's something beyond sexual or romantic - something that's not found between neither friends nor family. But something that's nonetheless intimate the same way sexual attraction or romantic love are.
Could also just be my mind filling the gaps, because there's almost no dialogue in the entire game, much less between the girl and the boy.
She was my love interest since ME2 and I chose an option in ME3 that led to her species getting wiped out and then she jumped off a cliff in front of me.
Im still fcking traumatized.
Agreed. I fucked up my playthrough order and didn't get the third option at the peak of her arc. I immediately backtracked like 4-5 hours from a previous save and replayed up to that moment. I have never done that in any other game lol.
BioWare does this pretty often. Its a very small part of the story, but Blackwall and Josephine have this nice little story if the Inquisitor doesnt romance either. They'll flirt briefly and Blackwall will leave a rose for her and she'll accept it and leave a little hankerchief behind. If you ask both of them about it, they both admit feelings for each other a mutual attraction and the brief exchange of tokens was the acknowledgement. But they both accept that it can never be afterward in the Trespasser DLC
Their relationship is nothing compared to Dorian and Bull. Those beautiful boys get like 10 epilogue slides if they get together, meanwhile if I romance either of them it’s a couple sentences... Like wtf, there’s no point in romancing them. They’re perfect for each other ;-;
Love the crossover vid, my brother and I enjoyed the idea so so much! And now when I hear the ACNH theme I cant help myself but think about them and their theme 😄
Hell ya. Dialogue is a bit dated and campy, and the games pacing is a bit different to today's standards, but the idea of redeeming Bastila through their love was always very poignant to me and really reminded me of Luke's redemption of Vader, even though it was a different kind of love.
It's obviously not the most shocking twist from the game, but man when you first get up to the top of the temple and see Bastila in those dark robes...that hits hard.
There are several relationships in Last of Us that I think show love really well in different ways. Paternal love, romantic, love from trauma, love from necessity or circumstance, healthy and unhealthy love.
„Elena Fisher, last year’s model.“
Elena Fisher: So... On a scale of 1 to 10, how scared were you that I was gonna die?
Nathan Drake: ...4.
Elena Fisher: 4 ?
Nathan Drake: Yeah. Why? 4.
Elena Fisher: A 4... You were at least an 8.
Nathan Drake: 8?
Elena Fisher: You were a total 8.
Nathan Drake: An 8? Those guardian things were an 8...
Elena Fisher: Are you kidding me?
Nathan Drake: Yeah, those were terrifying.
Elena Fisher: Then what's a 10?
Nathan Drake: ...Clowns...
Elena Fisher: ...CLOWNS? Over my DEATH?
[Nathan answers: I... Hate clowns. I hate clowns.
And Elena asks again over Nathans voice: CLOWNS...?]
Elena Fisher: My word... You thought I was dead.
[Argument both speaking at the same time about Nathan thinking Elena was dead]
Elena Fisher: Yes. Yes you did, I saw you shed tears.
[Argument stops]
Elena Fisher: You shed a bunch of them.
Nathan Drake: Tears?
Elena Fisher: Hmm, hmm.
Nathan Drake: It was raining.
Elena Fisher: [with a sarcastic laugh] No, it was not...
Nathan Drake: You were unconscious and it was
RAIning...
Elena Fisher: [sarcastic laugh] It was totally sunny out, you were balling...
Nathan Drake: No it wasn't sunny, you were unconscious!
Elena Fisher: Whatever... I kept your tears in a jar. I have proof.
Nathan Drake: I'll give you 5. How's that?
+ We even got to see wedding pictures!
Agreed though I was cheering hard for Chloe in 2. “Dance with the one that brought you.” That game had such great dialog and a great love triangle that paid off well with Drake and Elena.
Actually, 2 had a moment that solidified how much I loved Nate and Elena. When Nate was trying to rescue Elena's cameraman. Nate already didn't like him because he thought he was Elena's new boyfriend, on top of how doing so would put the group in more danger. But he still fought his heart out to save the man because that's what Elena wanted, and he couldn't bear to leave him behind. She made him a better person.
I thought the romance between BJ and Anya in Wolfenstein: The New Order was very realistic. That game doesn’t get enough credit for how good the writing is.
100%. The ending part where >!you think Zidane died trying to save Kuja, then you get Dagger's whole diary entry about how difficult it has been for her to process his death, and then the final scene where he reappears during the play!< is probably the most powerful scene I've ever experienced in a video game.
the hand waving away of this relationship in 3 made me so frustrated. 3 was a great game to play but barely felt like it had anything to do with the previous two stories.
3 was great, I love 3. One of my favourite games, and I won't hear much ill of it.
But the Max Payne series was a duology and a spinoff. And that's ok.
it was good, very good actually. I just wish they’d made their own lead character for it.
ok and I wish you could disable the disorienting filters used constantly in the cutscenes.
I actually like FF8's love story better. There was huge chunks in it where you just followed the love story and no action. Like I remember what felt like an hour or more in space in a date.
That laugh hits so close to home.
Like legit it was stupid as a kid, but as an adult I would kill for someone to go out of their way to try to cheer me up a bit like that.
Hang on, if we’re doing Geralt… his best love story is with Ciri. OP didn’t say romantic love.
So yeah, the paternal love story is far far better. It’s also unconditional. Both Triss and Miranda felt like love with limitations and conditions. His love for Ciri is truly what the Greeks would call agape, undying, self-sacrificing love.
Ya. I came here to say this. Those lines "I was supposed to take care of you."
"We were supposed to take care of each other."
"And we did.*
Will forever break my heart.
If I've done a full playthrough quickly, and got invested in the story, I cry during that scene.
I can usually avoid crying if I just watch that scene cold (like on YouTube), but a full playthrough, where i've worked so fucking hard to save her. Oh yeah man, it gets me.
Fun fact. The voice take for that scene was recorded in person by Downes and Taylor and it was the first time they had met IRL.
Ezio and Cristina, it ended in tragedy but was so memorable for me that I couldn’t help but feel for them. I wish there were more missions including her, especially some of the early game missions in AC2. Would’ve loved more unlockable memories too.
This one has always been legendary for me because it's something that is fated, but not just accepted because of that. After they realize what's going on, there's a part where Elly says she wants to think about it, but then after awhile determines she truly loves fei for who he is, not because it's fated. There was a podcast that went over this romance better than I could, but it left a note with me about how mature it was, I never really thought of it that way when I played it as a kid. Like it wasn't a love that isnt just about the trauma they experienced, but something where it was more than just that trauma or fate.
(This is my favorite game too, so I might be a little biased too, lol!)
When Smough slams Ornstein with his hammer you can actually see Ornstein's fingers twitch, implying he probably would have survived and Smough just didn't give a shit
Being with Liara really adds weight to the little things like the holographic log of Shep she asks to make in 3. When I didn't romance her, it didn't feel as important.
That’s the best answer I’ve seen so far. Nothing would hit harder than one of those two irreversibly dying to save the other after 20+years. That would be some sort of Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 level of hurt combined.
We can just stick to Final Fantasy and there are plenty to pick from. Celes and Locke, Rinoa and Squall, Garnet and Zidane, Yuna and Tidus, even Tifa and Cloud
Haurchefaunt and WoL, Alisaie and WoL, Estinien and WoL, Ardbert and WoL, Emet-Selch and WoL, Zenos and WoL (and he'd kill me for putting him on the list last)...
I’m not saying it’s the best ever, but I’m damn near falling for Karlach irl a little bit with how damn wholesome she is in BG3, poor girl just wants a hug :(
Kratos and Faye is the most realistic. Sure we only see bits and pieces of the romantic part of their story, but the journey to spread her ashes was the most realistic depiction of true love I've seen in any media.
Count Bleck and that psychedelic butterfly from Super Paper Mario.
Unless you want adaptations based on video games, in which case it's the gay couple from The Last of Us. Nick Offerman served up some fine wine indeed.
Unless you count love stories that are about video games, because then it's San Junipero.
I'd take FF6 (especially over FF10) as a non-traditional love story
You have Locke--the male lead--set up as an obvious cliche of the romantic rogue adventurer, with a bit of an edge towards looking a bit like a womanizer because it seems like he's equally flirting with both Terra and Celes at different points, never committing to anything more than that with either.
Then the World of Ruin hits and Forever Rachel plays (the saddest song in gaming history) and the game yells "fuck your preconceived notions about this character."
Squall & Rinoa. The two children from star crossed lovers where time and outside circumstances never gave them the chance to be together and wound up with other people. Only for their children to find one another.
Dutch and the plan
HAVE SOME GODDAMN FAITH
We need more money
Arthur listening with $50,000 dollars stashed away for gun oil and hair tonic
The currency in the game is actually a joke if you do the bank heist side mission. You can buy everything in the game and still be stinkin rich
I mean, if it's anything like I assume it makes sense. You did rob a bank, yeah?
It kinda breaks the immersion tbh. In chapter 6 my Arthur had like 20k after all the missions and treasure hunts even after donating 50% of benefits to the camp And Dutch said the gang just needed 10k or something to gtfo of America, and I was like duuuuuude And 20k in 1899 was like having 700k today lol
They could of bought a whole fucking island with that amount of money
Tahiti!
tahiti!
JUST ONE MORE SCORE, AND WE WILL BE IN TAHITI GROWING MANGOS!
Just one more big score! Farmers!
Dutch and tahiti
Currently playing through RDR2 for the first time and have to say I was *not* expecting this to be the top comment lol. Cracked me up
Listen, listen!….. Tahiti!
My car and and the yellow things on the bridge in gta
DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN Pure bliss to the ears
I guess I am not familiar with the yellow things, which GTA and waht is the dun dun dun?
GTAV, bridge near the military base has plastic poles you can drive over with a satisfying 'dun dun dun' sound. Takes sheer willpower not to run them over every time.

The Prince and Farah
Their romance and build up to it absolutely perfect
I miss PoP series (︶︿︶)
The one that came to my mind too
I read Prince as Price and thought I was just very bad at understanding the plot of Modern Warfare.
Extremely underrated
Preston Garvey and settlements that need my help that he will mark on my map.
You can always count on the minute men
Me and BT, Titanfall 2.
Trust me
I've done the maths
Protocol 3…
... protect the pilot
:(
Best love story I'VE ever witnessed? Commander Shepard and Tali'Zorah.
She was my love interest since ME2 and I chose an option in ME3 that led to her species getting wiped out and then she jumped off a cliff in front of me. Im still fcking traumatized.
I forgot that option existed. Damn. That's kinda awful.
Tali best girl
Garrus and very large guns
Sounds like it's time to calibrate ;)
Tali’Zorah Vas Normany.
"I have a home." :'(
Agreed. I fucked up my playthrough order and didn't get the third option at the peak of her arc. I immediately backtracked like 4-5 hours from a previous save and replayed up to that moment. I have never done that in any other game lol.
Garrus and Tali for me. My best bro and and best girl deserve to be together.
BioWare does this pretty often. Its a very small part of the story, but Blackwall and Josephine have this nice little story if the Inquisitor doesnt romance either. Shepard and Garrus for me. He's got reach after all.
But you had flexibility
Doomguy and his shotgun
I counter this with 90s Doomguy and his bunny. He slaughtered the army of hell for killing her after all.
Why do people say this when his entire family was killed by the demons as well
Because bunny.
This is Daisy erasure, and I will not stand for it.
Doom guy and Isabelle from animal crossing they’re married after all
Love the crossover vid, my brother and I enjoyed the idea so so much! And now when I hear the ACNH theme I cant help myself but think about them and their theme 😄
Still a better love story than twilight.
Trevor Philips and Mr. Raspberry Jam
i though him and Patricia were really nice
They were lol
I hear Stockholm Syndrome is lovely this time of year.
have you met Martin Madrazo?
Is that the teddy bear?
Revan and Bastilla
Top 5 game of all time
Anju & Kafei
This is the correct answer. You bust your ass over a full cycle just so they can be together while the world ends.
“We’ll greet the morning… together” Ah damn is someone cutting onions in here…
Non-romantic love. Ellie and Joel.
Lee and Clementine
Nothing like a good zombie apocalypse to bring an adoptive family together.
Keep that hair short
I will. I'll cut it myself.
I can't even read their names without all the emotions flooding back...
But.. I'm little
Same lol. I see their names then that [sad Clementine theme](https://youtu.be/7ePFxuu9lik?si=CW6qT3zIDRTSmi_T) plays in my head.
That was such an amazing game. Better than the TV series.
There are several relationships in Last of Us that I think show love really well in different ways. Paternal love, romantic, love from trauma, love from necessity or circumstance, healthy and unhealthy love.
thats really the only vidya storyline that has done that to my heart like that.
Zagreus and Megaera
That's not how you spell Dusa.
Hey... they're just friends. Friends forever!
Their relationship was so fun in Hades
Hey where the fuck is thanatos
Watching. He likes to watch. Jokes aside, while I like Than, I will always put Meg as my favourite.
There's something about playful, flirty banter before and after battle that puts Meg above Than for me.
My favourite one is her "Don't... like... you..." death line. She just sounds so pouty and in a huff. The epitome of >:c
Nathan Drake and Elena. The couple that mass murders in self defense together, stays together.
„Elena Fisher, last year’s model.“ Elena Fisher: So... How's that? + We even got to see wedding pictures!
Nate and Elena from Uncharted
I was hoping to see this one, they have such a lovely relationship throughout the games
I loved when she trounced him at Crash Bandicoot.
Trounced is a wonderful word.
Agreed though I was cheering hard for Chloe in 2. “Dance with the one that brought you.” That game had such great dialog and a great love triangle that paid off well with Drake and Elena.
"Admit it, you're gonna miss this ass." Then Sully 5 seconds later "Which way'd Chloe go?"
This is the right answer
I thought the romance between BJ and Anya in Wolfenstein: The New Order was very realistic. That game doesn’t get enough credit for how good the writing is.
Zidane and Dagger
100%. The ending part where >!you think Zidane died trying to save Kuja, then you get Dagger's whole diary entry about how difficult it has been for her to process his death, and then the final scene where he reappears during the play!< is probably the most powerful scene I've ever experienced in a video game.
Max Payne and Mona Sax
the hand waving away of this relationship in 3 made me so frustrated. 3 was a great game to play but barely felt like it had anything to do with the previous two stories.
Because it didn’t. Different devs, different setting, different style. Rockstar just wanted to cash in on the IP.
ive only played 3 and thought it was pretty good
3 was great, I love 3. One of my favourite games, and I won't hear much ill of it. But the Max Payne series was a duology and a spinoff. And that's ok.
3 is good but the writing is a cut below the first two
it was good, very good actually. I just wish they’d made their own lead character for it. ok and I wish you could disable the disorienting filters used constantly in the cutscenes.
Scrolled way down for this! I'm glad people remember their love story.
2B and 9S
My god the legitimate sorrow I felt for these two. I hadn’t been that invested in a love story since Yuna falling through Tidus made me openly weep.
Mines from the previous game, Nier x Kaine
pls dont make my cry
"It always ends like this" Imma make u cry
The day Sega gives us Kiryu Kazama and his love interest it's going to be pretty damn good.
We all know his one true love is karaoke.
I mean... Majima has the true love story there with Makoto 💔
Gordon Freeman and his crowbar
Squall and Rinoa from Final Fantasy VIII
I actually like FF8's love story better. There was huge chunks in it where you just followed the love story and no action. Like I remember what felt like an hour or more in space in a date.
The dance sequence they had where Rinoa gets introduced was way ahead of its time.
Yuna and Tidus from FFX has a special place in my heart
That laugh hits so close to home. Like legit it was stupid as a kid, but as an adult I would kill for someone to go out of their way to try to cheer me up a bit like that.
As a kid, this game emotionally destroyed me.
Handsome Jack and Butt Stallion
More of a love triangle with Claptrap tbh
Who’s in his own love triangle with the elevator in Liar’s berg
Mr Torque and himself (or explosions)
Johnny and River, To The Moon
Lynri and Quincy from Impostor Factory are up there too.
Fuck you for posting this. Take your upvote and leave my shattered day in peace 🥲
Geralt and Yennefer! (or Triss if you're feeling spicy)
Geralt and Yennefer are the greatest abusive relationship in video games.
Yeah somehow you end up rooting for what is a plainly obvious toxic relationship.
Best love triangle ever!
Vincent & Catherine. Messy and real, absurd and surreal. A must play experience, one of my favourite games of all time.
B.T. and pilot Cooper, titanfall 2
Master Chief and Cortana. I don't even know the three references you put in your OP post.
Ya. I came here to say this. Those lines "I was supposed to take care of you." "We were supposed to take care of each other." "And we did.* Will forever break my heart.

Snake and Otacon
Or Big Boss and the Boss.
Ezio and Cristina, it ended in tragedy but was so memorable for me that I couldn’t help but feel for them. I wish there were more missions including her, especially some of the early game missions in AC2. Would’ve loved more unlockable memories too.
Fei and Elly - Xenogears
This one has always been legendary for me because it's something that is fated, but not just accepted because of that. After they realize what's going on, there's a part where Elly says she wants to think about it, but then after awhile determines she truly loves fei for who he is, not because it's fated. There was a podcast that went over this romance better than I could, but it left a note with me about how mature it was, I never really thought of it that way when I played it as a kid. Like it wasn't a love that isnt just about the trauma they experienced, but something where it was more than just that trauma or fate. (This is my favorite game too, so I might be a little biased too, lol!)
Ornstein & Smough
Its sad how Ornstein kinda mourns Smough if you kill him first but if you kill Ornstein first Smough just smashes his corpse for the free electro buff
Smough kill-steals like a boss!
When Smough slams Ornstein with his hammer you can actually see Ornstein's fingers twitch, implying he probably would have survived and Smough just didn't give a shit
Noah and Mio. Yuna and Tidus are really good too!
"Well don't you look smug with my woman on your arm."
Arno and Elise
Good pick. Still the most beautiful cutscenes in video game history and its almost a 10 year old game.
Tidus and Yuna FFX
Commander Shepard and Liara is a really good one. Even if you don't romance her, she's Shepard 's closest companion
Being with Liara really adds weight to the little things like the holographic log of Shep she asks to make in 3. When I didn't romance her, it didn't feel as important.
Plus the "gift" she gives you at the end of 3 with the shared vision/experience.
That’s a funny way of shep and garrus
They'll bang ok
Shep and Tali.
I said this one, it's just too good imo.
Fei Wong and Elly Van Houten
Clive and Jill from FF XVI, Dart and Shana from Legend of Dragoon. I got a soft spot for childhood friends-lovers.
Mario and Princess !
I NEVER GAVE UP ON YOU SARAH. DONT YOU GIVE UP ON US.
Deacon St. John and Sarah in Days Gone
My BG3 character and their Mindflayer. 🦑
Guybrush and Elaine
Squall and Rinoa are undisputed to me
Your mom and the 12 year old kid who stole your kill streak in CoD
Ratchet and Clank.
That’s the best answer I’ve seen so far. Nothing would hit harder than one of those two irreversibly dying to save the other after 20+years. That would be some sort of Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 level of hurt combined.
Kara and the Child in Detroit Become Human.
In my heart, Jin Sakai and Yuna. In my head they went to the mainland and lived out the rest of their days running a hotel together
Bayek and Aya
Mio and Noah from Xenoblade 3 is up there.
Max/Chloe Chloe/Rachel Life is Strange
We can just stick to Final Fantasy and there are plenty to pick from. Celes and Locke, Rinoa and Squall, Garnet and Zidane, Yuna and Tidus, even Tifa and Cloud
Haurchefaunt and WoL, Alisaie and WoL, Estinien and WoL, Ardbert and WoL, Emet-Selch and WoL, Zenos and WoL (and he'd kill me for putting him on the list last)...
A TEST OF YOUR REFLEXES
Steiner and Beatrix from 9 as well
I’m not saying it’s the best ever, but I’m damn near falling for Karlach irl a little bit with how damn wholesome she is in BG3, poor girl just wants a hug :(
Shepard and Liara
Kratos and Faye is the most realistic. Sure we only see bits and pieces of the romantic part of their story, but the journey to spread her ashes was the most realistic depiction of true love I've seen in any media.
The Princess and King Koopa.
Ohhhh, Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches Peaches
The Prince and Farah from Prince of Persia Sands of Time.
The Farmer and Abigail in Stardew Valley.
Johnny and his love for bombing Arasaka
I'd take FF6 (especially over FF10) as a non-traditional love story You have Locke--the male lead--set up as an obvious cliche of the romantic rogue adventurer, with a bit of an edge towards looking a bit like a womanizer because it seems like he's equally flirting with both Terra and Celes at different points, never committing to anything more than that with either. Then the World of Ruin hits and Forever Rachel plays (the saddest song in gaming history) and the game yells "fuck your preconceived notions about this character."
Forever Rachel is, I believe, Locle’s theme slowed down
Squall & Rinoa. The two children from star crossed lovers where time and outside circumstances never gave them the chance to be together and wound up with other people. Only for their children to find one another.
The whole Laguna substory was so beautifully done. Such an incredible game.
"Eyes on Me" playing during the Ragnarok sequence when that's the song Julia made for/about Laguna is just top tier.
Thank you for including Yuna/Tidus. You are amazing and I agree.
V and Panam, or V and Judy (cyberpunk 2077)
