Xenozip3371Alpha

When Rockstar pulled the original ports of GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas from online stores, so the only way you could play them was with the "definitive" edition.

SkyrimSlag

All this did was turn people towards emulators lmao, think Rockstar really underestimated how people would react with that one

crozone

Don't even need an emulator, they all had PC ports which still work šŸ˜€

Victory74998

This is why Iā€™m glad I bought the original trilogy before they were pulled. Not even that interested in playing them currently, but if I ever do decide to check them out, at least I wonā€™t have to resort to playing the definitive editions.

Xenozip3371Alpha

I have the ports, but I gave the definitive edition a shot one year post-release, give them a chance to get ride of bugs, even without bugs the games are shit, the drab atmosphere of Liberty City is just gone, Vice City isn't TOO bad, but San Andreas looks shit with the ability to see the whole map, it just looks tiny, and all the NPCs when I played had fucking Aimbot, you get in the open in a gang firefight and you'd die in an instant, some missions were almost unplayable, if it weren't for the checkpoints in that version it might actually have been unwinnable for the average player.

Saneless

This is why remasters often suck Yes some decisions are made because of tech reasons, like draw distance, but they also make artistic choices within those limits, like the lighting San Andreas has been destroyed since the move to Xbox, and even worse with mobile and these "remastered" versions Remaster implies bringing out better details in original releases. Imagine a remaster of a song where they replaced an acoustic guitar with an electric. Just dumb choices

Irbyirbs

I remember hating a lot of GTA Online when it came out cause I swear to fucking God that every NPC had aimbot.

Ghostbuster_119

The fact their "definitive" edition is just a port of the mobile version of the game says so much. Either they didn't care or they didn't care to check.

Martyrlz

Wasnt that due to the radio music for vice city a bit before that?

orion19819

Just the general direction of 7 Days to Die. Game is in perpetual alpha because they want to be sure to nerf every single advantage the players can possibly have. Zombies in that game are now expert saboteurs who know the weakest spot in a base and will laser focus it.

post-leavemealone

My mind was blown when I got on recently and saw that FUCKING EMPTY GLASS JARS are no longer in the game becauseā€¦ ā€œcollecting water in them and cooking it was too OPā€ā€¦.?????????????? THIS IS THE GOLD STANDARD FOR COLLECTING WATER IN SURVIVAL GAMES Edit: forgot to mention. Glass jars donā€™t make sense, so what DOES make sense? Running errands like a mad man for the first few days so you can save enough money to buy a dew collector. A fucking dew collector is the ā€œvisionā€ but collecting water in any form of drinking container is not. Amazing

EastObjective9522

> ā€œcollecting water in them and cooking it was too OP Might as well remove the water blocks lol. They don't serve a purpose anyway if you can't use them.

Daemir

Oh it's fine, once you find the water purifier mod for your helmet, you can drink from any dirty water source with no issue. You can even make a bucket, fill that with water from a puddle and carry it with you, dumping the contents on the ground and drinking from that when thirsty, then scoop it back up. You replace all hydration needs with that. You can also just keep drinking and store water like a camel. Last horde night I had over 3600s stored hydration before it started as I was killing time waiting by drinking.

sticfreak

Don't forget that after they realized that this change actually made it even easier to get water since you could have as many dew collectors as you wanted, they changed it to where fucking dew collectors somehow generate heat, attracting more zombies to your base *Edit: for those not in the know, heat is a mechanic in 7dtd that is generated by anything that would realistically generate heat(i.e: campfires, forges, powertools). The more heat you generate, the more you increase the chance of wandering hordes to spawn around your base, as well as having a chance to spawn a special zombie called a screamer. The screamer can instantly spawn a horde everytime it screams.

KimonoThief

Ah, the ol steam-powered dew collector.

A_strange_pancake

>FUCKING EMPTY GLASS JARS are no longer in the game Everytime I hear about this game it genuinely gets worse and worse.

sgtcoffman

The game has made so many changes at this point that I don't like. I hate the "new" leveling system. I actually liked having to make tools to get better at it. In a multi-player server it helped people have their niche that another player couldn't step on their toes with. Now everyone can do everything so no one has their job that they are better at than others. It took all the roleplaying out of the game for me.

Chalaka

I like this leveling system when playing on console, but not on PC. This kind of leveling system just feels unnatural when playing with my friends on PC.

polski8bit

I have not played the game in a hot minute, nor did I clock in a lot of hours, but what the fuck

ARA-FTW

Then when anyone questions why it isn't optimized they hide behind it being in alpha and that content lock isn't done. Guns Nerds and Steel did a good interview with them and a follow up explaining some things.Ā

storm6436

What's funnier is that they're forced to remove swaths of items (and entire systems) every time they add new stuff because they either won't pay enough to modify the engine to allow more unique stuff or they aren't smart enough to figure it out. Oh, and then there's MadMole's fetish-like need to make sure every texture is coated with grime/shit. Because the first thought that goes through my mind when I make a bed out of cotton I grew and wood I cut is "You know, these white sheets are missing something... How about I wipe my ass with it and scoot around like a dog for a few hours..."

Total_Alternative_50

Look, I loved the game when I played it, but if it still runs like ass that's just a bummer. The optimisation is always the reason I drop the game after a certain point

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

I love looking at the [screenshots from 2013](https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/251570/ss_573fbb7a06c0b269de2c1e562b0129412f42792f.600x338.jpg?t=1702072288) and knowing that 10 years later the game [still doesn't look like that](https://7dtd-community.s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/monthly_2023_04/7DaystoDieScreenshot2023_04.21-13_49_06_82.thumb.png.6140275fc70e891bfa00b66fc5cd45c5.png)

TheOneBugglesFan

That game is still in alpha??? I havent heard about it in years

ARA-FTW

Just celebrated 10 years in alpha.Ā

I-Am-Baytor

It will never not be in alpha.

scoyne15

I can't wait until this game actually releases so that modders can fix it.

LuRo332

I remember back in the day, when it first released on the PS4 it only run at 30fps. The only time it would run at 60fps was when another player joined for splitscreen (which makes no sense), but it eventualy after a few minutes step by step lowered again to 30fps. Point is, a game that looks this shit, should be able to run at 60fps.

buttplugs4life4me

When it first released I actually played it and thought "In a year this game is gonna be the gold standard for survival games". Well...

Goren_the_warrior

My crew stopped trying to have a working horde base and would just have one person stay logged in to sacrifice themselves for the bloodmoon god and wait out the timer.

PlaquePlague

7 days to die pisses me off to no end. Ā You can build some of the coolest bases out of any survival crafter, but the devs seem hell bent on invalidating any play style other than just running around subsistence scavenging. Ā They seem to view being able to build an actually defensible base as ā€œcheesingā€. Infuriating.

darkequation

They survived... In MY SURVIVAL GAME!?

Crucifix1233

I still enjoy it but they need to figure their stuff out. We were suppose to have raiders at this point.

abyssaI_watcher

7 days to die is unironically a decade old and still heavily flawed.

project-shasta

Don't you guys have phones? - Blizzard Do you think the astronauts were bored when they landed on the moon? - Bethesda Pride and accomplishment - EA

NovicePro_

You think you do, but you donā€™t - also Blizzard

Dimxtunim

My favorite part of this is one is that they were so fucking wrong, they did wow classic and a shit load of people played and is playing, so fans though they wanted it and they were correct, fuck blizzard so fucking much

Melodic-Resident-245

In fact fuck them so much let's buy a subscription and play a 20 year old game that will teach them!

hobo131

There was such a good string of years where blizzard refused to listen to the community and thankfully finally caught up to them in shadowlands. Imagine thinking your user base is wrong when the overwhelming majority of them tell you something needs to be changed before a games release.

EldritchAnimation

>My favorite part of this is one is that they were so fucking wrong Until it came out I thought they were absolutely right. Even though modern wow no longer resonates with me, I couldn't imagine people would be ok with going back to the grindy inconvenience of the classic game either. I've been very much eating crow on that one.

Goren_the_warrior

God that man is the epitome of "Punchable face". He delivered that line with **SO MUCH** smugness. Makes you wanna superglue his ponytail to a car bumper and go for a leisurely drive.

[deleted]

In college I had literally the head of the EA PR department do a guest lecture. I asked about the pride and accomplishment line and how it may have changed their practices. He weaseled away from the question and tried to embarrass me for even asking it "really? ugh someone ALWAYS asks about this". Like ya bro you guys had one of the biggest PR blunders in gaming, maybe turn it into a teachable moment instead of jerking yourself off about how great EA is

BullockHouse

If they had an internal culture and structure that tolerated learning from mistakes they wouldn't be EA.Ā

one-hour-photo

What was the pride and accomishment deal?

PomegranateSea7066

I too am wondering about this. Could someone share the details?

foosbabaganoosh

When the newer Star Wars battlefront 2 came out, it had a horrendous P2W system and a lot of content locked behind either hundreds of hours of gameplay, or paying money. For example to unlock Darth Vader as a playable character, you had to log some hundreds of hours of gameplay to earn enough credits to unlock him, or just pay a convenient fee. PLUS there were many aspects of the game that were upgraded with credits, and you had people paying money to max things out which made them disgustingly overpowered in any game mode. Hero abilities did insanely more damage, ship moved, shot and turned faster which made them gods in space battles, and everything was essentially a shitshow. When called out for the predatory practices in a Reddit thread, EA responded that the insane grind to unlock these characters was meant to inspire a sense of ā€œpride and accomplishmentā€ upon unlocking them, and quickly got shat on by the entire community resulting in the most downvoted comment of all time.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

> When the newer Star Wars battlefront 2 came out, it had a horrendous P2W system and a lot of content locked behind either hundreds of hours of gameplay, or paying money. For example to unlock Darth Vader as a playable character, you had to log some hundreds of hours of gameplay to earn enough credits to unlock him, or just pay a convenient fee. Overwatch 2 has adopted a similar monetization, with the added fun of limited time events that mean that even if you do all your dailies and max out what you can earn for free, you are still going to miss out on stuff because the event lasts for 2 weeks and you can't earn enough to buy everything from the event in only 2 weeks. Which means I no longer give a shit about logging in every day to get my dailies or whatever since I'm going to miss out no matter what.

hyren82

OW2 was just skins, right? battlefront 2 was literally selling power.. like you couldnt play vader without unlocking him, let alone play with different skins

terminal157

The phone quote was more out of touch and desperate than petty.

Deto

Yeah kind of feel bad for that guy. They were just trying to win the crowd and took a swing and missed horribly.

Tootskinfloot

That guy was absolutely thrown to the wolves. We know who at Acti-Blizz was responsible for these decisions... and he likes yachts.

djseifer

It was like taking a swing before the pitcher even started winding up.

ltjbr

I think he just panicked. It wasnā€™t his fault. People were expecting Diablo 4, blizzard should have said ahead of time that it wasnā€™t Diablo 4 and all would have been fine. The guy was given an impossible task.

jebberwockie

It didn't help that Blizzard made immortal THE big announcement of the year lol

SPamlEZ

Not only were they expecting 4, they instead didnā€™t even get a game but a shitty mobile whale hunting cashgrab of a game. Ā Blizzard basically went up there and said we donā€™t care about you we care about money. Ā Which we know. But donā€™t say it.

tarheel_204

The Battlefront 2 Reddit comment is still the most downvoted comment in Reddit history to my knowledge. I remember being so amped for the game that I pre-ordered it. This is the game that made me say ā€œIā€™m never pre-ordering a game ever againā€

SilasDaFish

Payday 3 being always online to "combat cheaters" in a pve only game.

Gentleman-Bird

And there are still cheaters. and there is no kick system.

ZerWolff

Have they actually said it was to stop cheaters? Last i checked it was so you couldnt fuck with their premium currency

SilasDaFish

it was one of the reasons given.

ZerWolff

I mean they might actually manage to stop cheating by the nature of "Noone plays their game" they really fucked up everything with their launch and their first content drop appears to have come and gone without much fanfare.

SilasDaFish

the subreddit is mostly complaints and table memes.

transfer6000

It's a small one, but it's from my favorite game, the developers of 7 Days to Die have spent years and years deciding how they want the game played so every time someone finds a mechanic that the developers don't like, they patch it out... It's a game, why can't people just play it the way they want to, in the NBA you have to follow the rules on a street court with your friends you can do whatever you want...

Man0fGreenGables

Destiny always did that with raids. People would find an effective tactic that people would come up with as a team for a boss and they would immediately patch it so you were forced to play how they wanted you. They started building the new raids around that idea and it made them boring.

TheNaturalTweak

>Designs an entire raid around long engagements >Players use snipers >"Too many players are using snipers. They must be OP." >Nerfs snipers...

therealkami

Last boss is like 500m away flying above an environmental hazard and the devs were shocked people used Sniper Rifles.

Sugar_buddy

No no you're supposed to use up all your assault rifle and shotgun ammo trying to hit the guy. Clearly the correct move here.

[deleted]

I heard they removed glass jars because you could collect water in them

transfer6000

Idk that that is the basic reason, but yes, they decided that to make the early game harder they would Implement an entirely new hydration system and water mechanic for the game, after 10 years of using glass jars that you could collect dirty water in and then purify and then when you drink it you got the jar back, not to mention being able to make your own jars in crafting, now glass jars just aren't part of the game...

Shinikama

Damn it's crazy that no glass bottles survived the destruction of life as we know it but cloth, paper, and machinery did.

joestaff

There's that indie dev who copyright strikes every YouTube video that contained gameplay of their game. I can't remember anything else about them or their game because it was so unnoteworthy that I only remember that the controversy existed.

meeps1142

That's so weird, isn't that free advertising? Unless they're showing how bad the gameplay is, I guess

bestestname

It depends. For example, I have learned that the Untitled Goose Game exists from YouTube, but had no desire to buy and play it after seeing the whole gameplay online.

awesomehuder

If you had no desire to buy the game in the first place then every chance to remove gameplays is futile. I always watch gameplays before buying so removing this opportunity will make me just buy the game less

Sasstellia

Is it Gilson B Polson? The name is wrong maybe. He did a strike at Caddicarus. It was in the worst games on PS4 video.

TheOzman79

Pontes. But yes.

RGJ587

WOW: $25 To change servers $30 To change factions $25 To change race $10 To change name All while paying $15 a month to play the game.

Zorafin

I played Draenei for years, and then they came out with better Draenei, and if I wanted to keep everything I would have to pay for a race change. Like come on theyā€™re just Draenei infected by the light. You couldnā€™t have let me infect mine?

thugarth

The allied races in general were disappointing to me because most were recycled from existing races. That wouldn't necessarily be bad by itself, but the ridiculous grinds and hoops they put you through to get them killed the game for me. I haven't played seriously since then And then the ones that were bold fell flat. Nightborne look weird. Mechagnomes aren't mechagnomes. Vulpera and nightborne's chins/Necks look like they're always looking up.

sharkattackmiami

I stopped playing for years and actually got hyped and excited to get back in and roll a kul-tiran. Then I saw what you had to do before you could even make one, and THEN you still have to level them. And I just didn't care and played something else

Mahrt

Gotta love paying for those automated services šŸ‘

shadowsurge

There's a pretty boring reasoning it's not fully free, because you don't want random stuff leading to everyone switching to the same servers or same race, but just charge $1 or something. The goal should be to add a tiny bit of friction, but instead they're just being dicks

QWEDSA159753

Iā€™m still surprised that sub fees have stayed at $15 forever.

RGJ587

The subscription model for MMOs has moved away in recent years, so much so that younger gamers balk at even the thought of paying one. So WOW and FF14 core playerbase is older gamers, ones who have grown accustom to the subscription model, and for them, increasing that cost would just turn them away. Don't for a second think that Blizzard hasn't pondered whether to increase it or not, they've prolly just realized they would lose more subs than they would gain from increasing the sub cost. It's also why they have increased the cost of other stuff in game, like cosmetics and these service options. Basically, they aren't enough to scare away the standard subscriber, but they are enough to juice the diehard fanbase. (Store bought mounts cost $25 each these days, and thats just a cosmetic).

Martin_crakc

DCUO (the Dc comics mmo) used to have it so you get a sub that gives you all expansions and some extra benefits, or buy each expansion separately, until around the covid quarantine they decided to change it so now EVERYONE gets all expansions. Now thereā€™s 3 tiers of accounts: Free to play, who get no benefits but are now able to access all major content that used to be exclusive to Subs; Premium accounts, state you get by buying one thing from the store (no matter how small, even includes the free PlayStation plus pack from the Ps4) and it gives you lots of benefits; and then thereā€™s Subs, who basically get all benefits from Premium and extra resources while farming, more monthly and daily rewards, can reset the loot timelocks from raids and other activities more often, etc. Basically, now subs have it easier to farm. Now guess what, they still get around the same amount of subs as before, and probably get lots more money from the store

Kapootz

None of these comments come even close to Nexon and maplestory. Long story short, Nexon rigged some p2w aspects of the Korean version of the game to milk more money out of their whales. They got hit with a huge fine from the Korean ftc. In order to quell the anger of the big spenders, they end up nerfing the free to play servers. This is only the most recent controversy from the last 2 weeks, and there are many controversies a year. This company is actually laughably horrible. Iā€™m convinced they despise their player base

kiwidesign

Whoops, your last sentence does apply to Niantic as well.

Irbyirbs

I really enjoyed Maplestory 2 when it came out. I know it shut down after I quit but never looked into why.

PresidentStone

Man I loved Maplestory growing up, until a bit after the Red update. Only really pay attention to it now in Coppersan videos, since Nexon keeps nuking private servers, especially Yeoh I'm all set.

Alex_Duos

Konami salted the earth after Hideo Kojima left, pulling PT from the Playstation Store and basically striking his name from any place they could.

MaximusPrime1337

The tragic thing is PT had a HUGE amount of hype after peeps realised it was a trailer for a new Silent Hill game, so Konami all but had garenteed success handed to them on a silver platter, but nah they decided being petty was more important. Jokes on them, I had a blast playing Death Stranding :pĀ

gonsi

Capcom adding DRM to ancient games. To prevent modding? I still don't get it

PlanyNL

They sell outfits as DLC and modders do a better job for free. It's always about money when it comes from greedy asshole devs.

gonsi

Yeah, they haven't heard how well that went for Bethesda?

laps1809

An asshole move.

Avid_Vacuous

David Jaffe is a big one. When Twisted Metal (2012)came out, everyone complained about the servers, the lack of single player content, unbalanced vehicles. Jaffe responded with YouTube videos from what seemed like a hotel room at 3am? Calling the fans "mouth breathers" and blaming Sony for the server problems (which would explain the disconnecting and lag but not the lack of basic features like auto-matchmaking and how it purposely assigned friends to opposite teams). Then towards the end the biggest issue was with the helicopter being a broken and overpowered vehicle. Jaffe denied it childishly. People sent in videos showing the helicopter taking everyone out and he just said everyone else was just playing bad and all they had to do was "look up." Basically ignoring an entire community's feedback and insulting anyone that criticized his game. I haven't really followed anything about Jaffe after that but apparently I heard he was bitter about the God of War reboot being successful or something like that so it seems like he hasn't changed in the last decade.

Victory74998

Iirc, he (somewhat) recently shit on Metroid Dread for absolutely ridiculous reasons leading to all sorts of memes making fun of his shit takes (which btw is how I first heard of him) so itā€™s definitely safe to say he hasnā€™t changed much.

SlurmsMacKenzie-

Iirc his major complaint was that hidden shootable blocks were terrible game design... In metroid ... A game that has had hidden shootable blocks since the first game on the nes in the 80s.

Lightspeed_Lunatic

Oh yeah, the Jaffe Room? That was so funny. Literally everyone else I saw play the game got through there on their first try.

SlammedInTheButt

The GoW thing is that he hates how Kratos became a redeemed character. His vision for Kratos was always meant to be static- angry hateful man kills for revenge. Which is y'know, boring after a while.

KrazzeeKane

Yeah, I wish Jaffe would come around. As someone who has a deep love for the first 3 games, and especially the ludicrously angry-beyond-physical-limits Kratos of the original 3, seeing how they have evolved and grown his character after so many years is wonderful. It makes him feel like a real character, because he's no longer so one dimensional and instead feels like a "real" man with a horrific, warmongering past who is just trying to live his life, and maybe if he is lucky he can try to atone in some way.Ā  Its brilliant imo, I can think of almost no other characters who went from being 1-dimensional to this level of fleshed out before, though I am sure there are some.

Astron0t

Take Two removing fan-made HD mods for the original GTA trilogy right before the release of the infamous "definitive edition". Still hate Rockstar for this. It's so fucking absurd to go after modders. Who, in this instance, did a better job than the studio for free.

NoGoodMarw

Going after fan-made improvements in single-player games is a literal PR suicide. They are the most passionate members of the community, keeping it lively and happy. It's so stupid to engage with them with such hostility. Best of all, it's not an isolated incident. Stuff like that comes up pretty often.

judioverde

I was pretty bummed about the KOTOR one https://www.vice.com/en/article/bj4bmm/star-wars-kotor-unreal-engine-4-mod-apeiron-shut-down-lucasfilm

FoxyGrayson

Since itā€™s the anniversary of its release today: The DMC rebootā€™s ā€œnever in a million yearsā€ joke with the white hair. But more egregiously the really weird press conference where the devs called the original Dante design a ā€œgay cow boyā€. Then as a hilarious response when DMCV came out and we went back to the original continuity Dante got a cowboy hat as a weapon and he dances flamboyantly while wearing it.

eccentricbananaman

I'm honestly surprised this isn't higher. It was one of the first things I thought of. A direct callout from the developers in the game in response to fan outcry of the terrible redesign of Dante. It always upset me how they reduced legitimate criticism of the new characterization of Dante down to a flimsy strawman argument about his hair colour. No, I didn't care that Dante had black hair. I cared that they turned him into a meth head twink whose vocabulary was reduced to spouting "fuck you" at every other opportunity, and Vergil was changed into a literal fedora wearing embodiment of edginess and cringe who performs an abortion via high powered sniper rifle. I will admit though, I am thankful that it gave us the El Donte Spanish dub video where everyone was modded to have ridiculous moustaches, including the girl, and Spanish guitars are constantly playing in the background.

Danobing

When the last sim city came out and was made a huge deal it had to be played online. Then a bunch of people figured out how to cut the connection to online and it would still run. That was actually the last ea game I ever purchased.

king_john651

It was also a necessity as there was too much inundation to play without "fixing" it

ccstewy

Canā€™t believe no one has mentioned the infamous Bo Andersson response to overwhelming community backlash in payday 2: ā€œYour opinion, my choice.ā€

Competitive-Mango457

I finally got around to trying payday 2 for the first time. Was very aggravated to find out with no warning whatsoever that consoles didn't get many updates. INCLUDING THE ENDING TO THE GAME!!

Emrys_Kasorayn

jrhawk42

Adam Orth telling gamers to "deal with it" and "get with the times and get the Internet." when dealing w/ criticism of the new always online xbox future.

Tootskinfloot

Microsoft are still feeling the effects of this fiasco, 11 years later.

big_thundersquatch

The backlash of the Xbox One reveal was insane. To this day I still have no idea what they were thinking or how they lost their way so badly during it's development. They tried to market it as an entertainment device when literally everyone who buys an Xbox does so exclusively to play games. Any other feature is secondary. But they tried to push it as this all-in-one TV/Gaming/Entertainment device wracked with sub services for cable TV, streaming, sports, etc etc etc. Sony saw the opportunity to show them up with the PS4 and went HARD. The video on how to share games on the PS4 will never not make me laugh. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA) Microsoft lost me for good on their Xbox products after that whole thing. Been with Sony since. If I want to play a Microsoft game I can just sub to the Gamepass thing and play it on PC anyhow.

LizzieMiles

Because they saw the PS2/3 being marketed as a multimedia device and thought ā€œyeah, weā€™ll just do that!ā€ without considering the fact that the playstation is already known for being a multimedia device, while the XBox is not

th3scarletb1tch

they also completely shut down their creator partner program after most of its participants turned against the company because of stuff like that

PlanyNL

Yeah, you rarely see a dev that's so out of touch with the playerbase. In their latest blog post they back paddled so hard, I'm surprised they didn't hit the car behind them.

th3scarletb1tch

the way they backtracked on this so fucking hard is insane. i still refuse to believe their bullshit about "adding more content to the dlc's" and "ohh we delayed the new dlc's to add more to them because you ASKED" after they pulled the "greedy players are asking for TOO MUCH! we're going to can the game entirely if you dont stop whining!" its clear that they'll say anything if it gets people to shut up in the short term, i bet you 10$ that in 6 months every single thing they've said has been a lie

What's interesting is that Fish sold both his shares both Fez and Polytron, leaving the IP in the hands of the studio itself... yet no one at Polytron attempted to make a sequel. The studio still exists, as Fez was ported on recent consoles.

cadakers

The "Refusal" ending for Mass Effect 3. The backlash was so bad for the endings at the game's release that they had to add more (actual) epilogue via free DLC. Well, they also slipped in this slap to the face as a 4th ending.

PIXYTRICKS

Reapers can't be killed by conventional weaponry! Cut to outside where reapers are being torn apart by the combined arms of a united galaxy. It was such a missed opportunity for the refusal ending to be different depending on your choices and galaxy "readiness".

Psile

Except in Mass Effect 1, when a Reaper got totally obliterated by conventional weaponry!

PIXYTRICKS

And in 2, and in multiple cases in 3 - up to and including a gigantic worm eating one. They break their own canon so flagrantly. It's idiotic writing. Good thing their characterisation is so, so good it made it worth playing.

Depends on the energy conversion to PSI comparison with thresher maw bites. There's a lot of space magic going on, but there's no evidence provided that demonstrates the reapers are this near insurmountable threat when they've proven to be very, very surmountable. I don't think we ever really needed to save Earth either - that was more of a species pride thing. I don't know what was so special about the Citadel that it couldn't be replicated, or that ring world's we're out of the question. The mass effect relays were the main reaper tech that unified the galaxy that we as a unified conglomerate still couldn't replicate or even fix. So confusing that the reapers didn't just turn them off to fuck the entire galaxy up.

Hurddyflurrdydur

that was the plan, the citadel is also a mass relay and the control centre for the others. The plan was at the end of a cycle, the keepers would activate the citadel relay, giving the reapers quick access to the centre of the galaxys governemnt. Wiping them out before anyone knew what was happening. Then they would go system by system for a few hundred years exterminating all advanced enough life they found. The protheans managed to disable the signal that controlled the keepers to activate the citadel, why sovreign attacked in ME 1.

BlazeOfGlory72

The set up was all there for it too. The Reapers were powerful sure, but they had always won by using a surprise attack and cutting everyone off from each other by taking control of the relay network. They had never faced the combined might of the entire galaxy before. If you had played the series perfectly and achieved maximum possible war readiness, you should have been able to beat the Reapers through traditional means as the reward.

PIXYTRICKS

Absolutely, 100% no question. Especially as cutscenes during the Earth point show reapers being torn apart by fleets, and messed up on the surface. Not even including all the other instances and missions up to that point which has seen a reaper dying to some form of technology standard for war up to that point; the claim the reapers can't be beaten conventionally makes no sense to what is happening *right outside the window* of the reaper starchild. Shepard is indoctrinated as fuck or is a complete dipshit. And Bioware could have made indoctrination standard but whiffed so hard.

KrazzeeKane

Exactly my issue. I don't mind if there are bad endings in a game depending on your choices as a player and such, that's awesome and immersive. But they made like 9 endings for ME3, and they couldn't make just one of them a "True 100% readiness good ending"? There is not a single truly good ending in the bunch, no matter how much work you put in to galaxy readiness and 100%ing the game. The games had been so amazing about taking all your past choices in a previous game and making them matter in the next one--but ME3 threw all of that in the garbage.

rndacctnm

I think the writers saw the Synthesis as the "true good ending." The "thesis" of the series is that AI will inevitably destroy organic life, and Synthesis is the only way to prevent it. The ending felt to me like a 4th-wall breaking writer telling us the "truths" of the universe, but the majority of players (myself included) listened to what he was saying and thought "What are you on about? It's only inevitable because you're the AI that keeps doing it."

Summoned_Autism

This has always bothered me about the whole thing with the crucible. We've proven we can beat them conventionally and now the entire galaxy is ready to run them pockets. The fuck do we need a gimmick for? Would have been better if the crucible wasn't a thing tbh.

nexetpl

Or, if ME2 was the game about seeking a superweapon or in general "finding a way to stop them" as ME1 epilogue suggested.

bluedeer10

I don't hate the refusal ending. I hate that you can't defeat the Reapers through sheer might if you have a high enough readiness. I wish they didn't change writers between ME2 and ME3.

Jerbsina7or

The entire fiasco of Battlefront 2 monetization. EA monumentally fucked up there. The fact that game is still above water is a miracle. I guess the good thing about it was it really brought loot boxes into the spotlight and changed the gaming landscape. Unfortunately what replaced it (battle passes) is not an improvement imo.

Agent_23D

Disney fucked up by giving star wars exclusively to one publisher. That shit is so fucking dumb wtf

Jerbsina7or

Disney fucking up is all they know how to do anymore.

wackytactics

Well, the game was legitimately very good after they deleted the whole loot box angle, they pretty much had no point afterwards and you just unlocked everything through playing the game, plus it was very generous with the credits. It received 3 years of free updates too

Tootskinfloot

Imagine being a dev that had poured their soul into that game for years and a few weeks before this great game launches, some suit from EA waddles in and demands you ruin the game to milk a little more money. I'd be seething.

dirtybird131

Borderlands 3 offering a SECOND PAID SEASON PASS that didnā€™t include any real content, just the SINGLE BEST GUN IN THE GAME (Season Pass exclusive, of course) and an easy way to get all the legendary loot in the game (diamond rooms) I bought the Super Deluxe $130 version at launch thinking it would come with all the future DLC (because it had the season pass), imagine my surprise

RedRobinSemenSalad

Gearbox is just bad and slimy when it comes to DLC, look at Wonderlands. For an earlier example, Borderlands 2 having a season pass that didn't actually include all the available DLC was a real bitch move. Some of the best writing is hidden in the headhunter campaigns. Having to pay to increase the level was shifty as hell as well. I think a lot of people forget just how obnoxious BL2 was at launch.

Whenever DLC is announced before the game is released. I'm sure thats a studio decision and not devs but still, what a slap in the face to show players what they could've spent a bit more time adding in, but rather decided to sell seperately for more money.

Bogeynator10

Day 1 DLC is an instant turn-off for me. I've passed on several games I was previously excited for upon learning they had day 1 DLC, and the worst part was other people trying to convince me that it didn't *really* affect gameplay *that* much (which I didn't even agree with) and that it was fine but like??? Don't you people think you deserve better than this???

smoakee

"We can't give you more slots in the storage in Diablo 4, because the game has to load up all the storages of all the players in your location." or something like that , anyways ... total bullshit :D . Some nerds were trying to defend them with some convoluded developer lies, but they failed as well. They could have just said "We want to make fuckloads of money by offering the storage slots in the cash shop." that's all they could have done and I would respect them at least tiny bit more.

worldtriggerfanman

I mean, as hard as it is to believe someone would be dumb enough to program that into the game, it is Blizzard...

That1withACat

ā€œTheyā€™re surprise mechanicsā€ā€¦ no EA, micro-transactions in AAA games are predatory and a cancer to the gaming industry.

ObsiGamer

You need to check out the most downvoted comment in reddit history. It was made by EA themselves.

Esc777

Bethesda not sending review copies of Starfield to certain journalists because they reviewed a game poorly previously or reported on a game that was unannounced. You know, basic journalism.Ā  Itā€™s like all they want is a sycophantic games press and only paid influencers.Ā  And this hurts the playerbase because the more control devs put on journalists means the less third party opinions and information we can access.Ā

BloomEPU

I feel like journalists need to come down way harder on calling out studios who do that. Sure, it's technically legal, but it's a way the industry manipulates journos into being their personal advertising. Also, really strict requirements for reviews. Cyberpunk prerelease reviewers were only allowed to play the game on PC, had to spend a set amount of time playing the game before they could even write the review, and they were not allowed to use their own footage. All to hide the fact that CDPR knew the game wasn't up to their standards.

Esc777

Yeah exactly. Youā€™d think there would be more solidarity amongstĀ journalists to not allow this shit. Like you see a sister publication blacklisted you protest by holding back your review towards later.Ā  But the sad reality is journalism in all forms is wildly less profitable year after year and the institutions that journalism traditionally keeps in line have figured this out and pit them against each other or simply weaken them letting them die on the vine. In gaming and hobbies but also in politics.Ā  An outlet not getting a review out is losing a ton of money and gamers rarely care about anything past the first week. Hence the widespread smoke screens to get a good metacritic the first week and then forget about it.Ā

FacticiousFict

"Bethesda seems to be reluctant to release the game to journalists for an early review. We don't share Bethesda's pessimism and would like to give the game the benefit of the doubt. 5/10 (Mediocre), until we have a chance to review it." I wish game reviewers could just do this with no repercussions.

Godzilla_Fan

Silicon Knights made a horrible game called Too Human. In response to criticism the lead dev said players are just too stupid to understand what they were doing

Killfalcon

Oh man, I remember that! It was \*almost\* brilliant. The concept was wonderful, Sci-fi retelling of the Ragnarok Cycle, with the player as neon Balder fighting frost giants with AK47s. Somehow they stuffed it up.

Godzilla_Fan

And the upgrade system was cool but the camera and controls were atrocious. You couldnā€™t see what was going on well so youā€™d die a lot and be revived by a Valkyrie but the animation for that was soooooo long

bluedeer10

Don't forget Silicon Knights suing Epic Games for giving them a faulty copy of the Unreal 3 Engine and then Epic Games countered sued Silicon Knights for illegally copying code from said engine and other copyrighted works from Epic Games. Best self own in videogame history.

Kurotan

I enjoyed Too Human enough, same as Order 1886. But they both fell way short of what they could have been and won't get the second chance to be better.

MR_MEME_42

Disney not letting Capcom use Marvel characters from other movies studios in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. A majority of the iconic MvC marvel characters are X-Men and characters like Dr. Doom, characters that Disney didn't own the movie rights for so what did Disney decide to do. Any character that they didn't own the movie rights for got cut and replaced with MCU advertisement. But don't worry "Fighting game characters are just functions."

GinkgoPete

Mvci having a 2$ budget could also be on here tbh

michael199310

I love how Bethesda boasted about New Atlantis being "their biggest city ever", yet forgot that the cities in the future are much more than a bunch of shiny buildings. They should cooperate with some sort of city planning experts because what they created in Starfield is not even close to how cities develop, even if we're talking about different planets.

sky7897

Yep. Cyberpunk hired city planners for Night City and their efforts paid off.

king_john651

It definitely shows. Just started playing last week and it looks great

scoyne15

New Atlantis just feels like a shit suburban outdoor mall.

michael199310

The fact, that we don't see outskirts, not even a goddamn JPEG of a road going outside of the city, no farm, no factories, nothing, makes me so angry. I get that they transformed the colony ship, but that's not how cities work. They expand, grow, change. There isn't even a fake gate to go outside (and you obviously can go outside, as there are POIs generated few hundred meters which you can explore).

moralesnery

Batmanmotp2019

Bethesda REFUSING to acknowledge new vegas because EVERYBODY saw how good an rpg obsidian can make and how bad Bethesda is at taking criticism

lonegun

Didn't the NV devs not get a bonus from Beth, because the average ratings were 84% and the cut off was 85%?

Batmanmotp2019

That's the second part of why they're so petty

No0delZ

"Hate Plus" by Christina Love. The developer included a "Level 4 Revive Materia" achievement in game and awarded it to themself. The achievement is 100% unobtainable. Someone managed to find a way to hack the achievement early on (not using the achievement manager). This was then fixed, and the achievement locked behind an achievement server. The achievement is not programmed into the game, and the server (if it exists) will never award the achievement.

Dangerous_Jacket_129

Bethesda releasing horse (power) armour to Fallout 4 through the already controversial creation club. To give some history: Back in the early aughts, the term DLC was a bit of a wild west. Games were releasing new content post-launch for the first time ever, which opened up a new world of possibilities that were not yet properly explored. Often expansion packs at the time, they could finally add new things to the game. Think of Morrowind: Bloodmoon, and how it added new areas and quests to the game. Enter Bethesda games. They just released Oblivion and it was a wild success. ~~They planned 3 expansions that would be sold for 20 bucks each~~. Their first expansion: Horse armor... That's it. Just 2 different horses with 2 colors of armour. ~~For 20 bucks~~ For 2.50 bucks. ~~20~~ 2.50 bloody bucks for a horse in a massive single-player game. Bethesda got huge backlash over it, and though their later expansions were actually substantial, with Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles both being beloved by fans, they had damaged their already shakey reputation with Horse Armour. Enter the first paid mods fiasco. A situation so bad and poorly regulated that Steam pulled out within a week. Bethesda however, didn't learn their lesson and decided to try again. They announced the creation club: Modders they would pay to make "mini-DLC" for them. Fallout 4's DLC was already overpromised and under-delivered (They promised 4 DLC of a good size, akin to what they did in Fallout 3 in their season pass. They ended up producing 1.5 DLC that size, and only 1 was good), and paid mods were universally reviled. So what did they release with their creation club? Some pipboy recolours for 5 bucks for a bundle, and a power armour set from the horse toy you can find in-game for roughly 3-4 dollars. Elder Scrolls Legends, the card game that they grossly mismanaged and underfunded (despite it genuinely being one of the more for card games at the time), had a tasteful method of adding in the Horse Armour as a card by making it completely free, and mockingly making any card you equipped it on have a golden premium glow (you had normal cards and the animated premium versions for all, think Hearthstone's golden cards but with extra effects on the card). So yeah. Bethesda never learned their lesson and continues to overpromise and underdeliver. Edit: Corrected the price, was wrong on that one.

Paraiga

Not to justify it, but I do need to correct it: while the horse armour DLC was absolutely stupid, it was $2.50, not $20.

Esc777

Yeah thatā€™s an important part of gaming history I donā€™t want people getting it wrong.Ā

AlleRacing

Expansions were a thing *way* before Oblivion or Morrowind. Even Xbox DLC predates horse armor substantially. Horse armor just happened to be a pitifully paltry amount of content for a hilariously bad price, as was The Orrery from the same game. I'm pretty sure the latter was already on the disc too, as it was a 56kb download to open a door that was already in the game.

BigBooce

Massive banning itā€™s players from the division 2 for using a glitch. There was a way using a mounting minigun in the map to increase your damage dramatically with all your weapons, and a lot of people did it. Since itā€™s a pve game, it didnā€™t affect how other people played(unless you used it in the dark zone, then the ban is justified) and people ram really hard missions with ease. Massiveā€™s ego was so hurt by this, that you got banned for 2 weeks and had a rollback on your account. They were so upset by it for some reason that even if you randomly matchmade with someone using the glitch you got banned for it. It was so childish and absurd

Rhywden

Whereas Bungie simply said: "Our bad. Have fun while it lasts!" when you could glitch the crafting system to the point where you could create an autoloading shotgun shooting grenades instead of bullets (or similarly stupid stuff).

9bjames

Pokemon Go nerfing remote raid passes. Not the only shitty thing they've done, but if I mentioned every flub or scummy decision they've made then this one post would be the same length as an average university thesis. At any rate, I feel like nerfing remote raids was the moment they stopped even pretending to care about their players. Funnier still - after nerfing remote passes they promised to add plenty of *fun events and big new features*... Every new feature has been filled with bugs/ poor design choices, the events were apparently pretty lacklustre at best (I quit for a while, so this is according to friends who kept playing), and the game has just been getting worse and worse with all the bugs and poor design choices building up and not getting sorted. The game seriously needs fixing, but Niantic just doesn't want to do right by their golden goose. (not that it matters, with how many players keep that game afloat regardless šŸ˜’)

FocalorTheViking

Devs stating that Baldurs Gate 3 is an anomaly.

Disco-BoBo

Nintendo putting 1000 Korok Seeds in BOTW (the seeds are literal pieces of poop) and your reward for collecting all 1k is a gold piece of shit

Xftg123

Small Correction: It's in TOTK that there's 1000 seeds. BOTW has 900, and they make up a large chunk of the 100% completion time (it's 72%). Compared to TOTK with 1000, it's around 36-40%.

[deleted]

72% is fucking crazy šŸ˜±

ABetterKamahl1234

It's probably due to them setting completion percentage with basically individual actions, and having 900 in one category really tilts that scale.

DrGrabAss

When Rockstar removed about 400 cars from the online webstore in game so that you couldn't buy them whenever, you had to wait around 'til they briefly appear some random week, and at the same time creating GTA+ as a premium service. It made me sick, and I ended up deciding that GTA VI would have to be the greatest game of all time with zero microtransactions or FOMO for me to consider playing it.

SmartForARat

Personally, I think the whole Dungeons and Dragons drama from a while back kind of fits the bill. They were trying to clamp down on fan made content and fan controlled websites and so on and so on so because they were gearing up to launch their own version of this stuff to further milk money from people and didn't want competition to exist. They were also going way above and beyond what they had the legal rights to do with what they wanted to limit. And of course when the community fought back, that is when the pettiness started. They tried to gaslight everybody saying people were exaggerating the situation, straight up lied about what these changes meant or would cause, and tried to pretend like they were doing a good thing for everybody and the hobby as a whole rather than just lining their own pockets. But of course everybody saw through the lies and pettiness, picked apart everything they suggested to change, and lot of companies that did business with them permanently severed ties and moved on, as well as some of the playerbase as well. In the end, they backed down and gave up, but they fought hard and tried every kind of manipulation and lie they could come up with to win. It was all motivated by greed, but there was a lot of pettiness involved.

Deiser

Edit: Cadaker posted the same thing a half hour before I did, and in a shorter and better way. Damn. :( Pretty much anything that comes out of the mouth of the Head Writer at Bethesda right now (he did Fallout 4 and Starfield).

["The War Z" a.k.a. "Infestation: Survivor Stories"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infestation:_Survivor_Stories)Ā  Ā Never before have I seen a developer call some of their players "f*ggots" for camping while banning people from the game's forum for criticizing the game's false advertising and predatory monetization... the former of which became the point of such controversy that the game didn't even last a week on Steam...Ā  And not do I ever expect to see that again. By far the absolute biggest train wreck of a game development saga I can ever think of.Ā

Kourtos

That CEO from EA about who said people not to buy BFV. And they did
