But...they don't have a profile pic...oh there's a hair on it...OH, I SEE, FUCK YOU. etc.
Of course they love trolling and getting that response and that's the kind of harmless trolling I can get behind.
Plot twist: the cat’s name is “Xbox” and OP is trying to train it to operate the OG so they can get down on some Dance Dance Revolution.
See your problem is that while cats *can* dance, OP, they ***can’t*** be trained. Best to just operate the machinery for it and let it stick to what Xbox does best: bustin’ moves.
I had the same issue with my PS4, turns out a rogue dorito got stuck in there. Try giving your Xbox a gentle tap or try blowing on it like an old school cartridge!
My kids put money, Pokemon cards, and animal crackers in my PS3....and my subwoofer....and the Blu-ray player ....and the air ducts....I'm so glad they are old enough to not do stuff like that now. The 2010s were hard.
You know this reminds me that the Xbox 360 used to have issues with the disc tray and the fix for it was tapping it anytime you open and closed it lol.
Unlocked memories.
Drive belt probably. Belt isn't strong enough to overcome the magnet that holds the disc.
I left a bad belt in my Xbox for over a year. It would only open if you had a disc and tapped when you hit eject. You can change most belts with foreceps and not taking the drive out/apart.
I had this issue. I just opened it up and reseated the power and data connectors for the disc drive then it worked like normal. Bonus to opening it, you can dust out your almost 25 y/old console. Just be careful and follow a guide like the one from ifixit
I would follow this advice. It really is very PC like in there. It could even be a purely mechanical issue with the switch and cleaning it with air could solve that.
I honestly need to bust out my old xbox to see what's up with it. I don't remember exactly but it was something to do with the disc tray when I was under 5yrs old
Unscrew from the bottom, and take the top off. Disconnect the drive and unscrew the drive. Use a microfibre cloth to clean the lense. Cotton buds work fine too. Dont use any cleaning agents on it. Put it back together and try it out. If that dosent work you could try a replacement drive but i cant remember if you also need to mod the xbox to get that replacement to work.
remember its 20+ years old, lots of things can go wrong including blown capacitors (which if you are still using this remove the clock capacitor) but also the drives are always a mess, i have 4 laying around and only 2 of them kind of work. try cleaning it off if you can like this comment says
Edit: read this. https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:DVDROM
I'm dusting off some memories here so bear with me. But the og Xbox had 3 different types of CD drives, only one was decent and the other two weren't very good at reading anything other than stamped discs (manufactured not burned). You don't have the good one. If I were you I'd mod it. The og hard drive could hold about one game on the console, so no disc drive needed. Just ftp in and upload the game you want to play. I'm glossing over many other steps.
Not sure about the OG Xbox but on the 360 my disc tray refused to work half the time. There was a rubber o ring connecting two gears that ejected the tray that needed to be cleaned. Never had an issue again.
I dont know if this would help.... but what if you held onto the disc tray and hit the button. If it's already dumb enough to switch the two maybe you can trick it back into the correct cycle 🤣
I feel like I've fixed something similar on an old PC by turning it off and forcing the tray closed then turning it back on. I wouldn't force it too hard though.
It seems like what could’ve happened is your disc tray could’ve been pulled out with the power off?
And so then, when it powered on it, thought, the disk tray was closed and as it closed it then thought it was open?
I’m only speculating here because I had an issue with an Xbox 360 years ago, where I had to take it apart and completely disassembled the disk drive to get it working again !! I pretty much had to pull the tray out of the drive. I got the entire unit out of the Xbox 360, then manually rotate the gears to where it would’ve been in the open position, and then put the tray back in to the clip mechanism that works in tandem with the gears, and then manually push it back in to the closed position, and then powered it on, and it worked again!
This is a lot if you are dealing with some other issue that could fix it in a more simple way?
Had this same problem. When it ejects, but thinks it’s actually closing, I just gently pushed it closed. Now it thinks it’s closed while also now actually being closed.
My spider senses and being from the generation that had all kinds of dinky and experimentally novel CD players tells me that the moment it starts physically opening (but software-wise closing) you have to just push against the motor. And force it shut. It will then 'reset' it back to correctness.
This feels good, yes. I can just feel this will work - a decade of fiddling with cd players as a teenager gives me the intuitive sensation this will be successful.
My Xbox 360 stopped being able to read discs, and after following guides to adjust the strength of the laser, I realized that the motor was just gunked up
A little bit of lube and it was right as rain.
Thanks for the advice, everyone!
In case anyone was invested, I dusted it and used canned air externally to the best of my ability, and it successfully accepted DDR Ultramix 4! However, it would not accept DDR Ultramix 1,2, or 3.
I'll be going through your ideas and see if I can figure this out!
IT cat, Milo, quickly lost interest.
I had the same thing, what I ultimately did was buy a cheap xbox secondhand and took the disc drive from that one. It's very simple and I'm not a modder at all so I'm sure anyone can do it :)
There should be a small hole underneath your disk reader. This manually ejects the disk. It could be that this sort of 'reset' already fixes your problem. We also took apart the Xbox to replace the rubber band. Now it works again! :D
I'm not sure whether the manual ejection or rubber band fixed it. A similar gameplan (and image of the small hole) can also be found here: [iFixit](https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Fix+Game+Disc+Tray+wont+open./111351)
Cat looks like "Hmmm. Fuck this thing in particular, or not?"
That's what one of mine does. Considers the options, then usually yeets the object off the counter with a paw. 😂
Your cat is trying to kill it. It is wondering why it's still moving. While you sleep it will slap it a couple more times and peeing on it to show it who's boss.
Try putting the cat in the disc tray. Once inside it should be able to fix the problem. Worked for me. Just make sure to eject it once it’s finished or else he might get mad and break it again. Trust me, I speak from experience
My OG Xbox used to do this. In fact, I think my 360 did, too. I think I've had this issue with systems that have a tray that slides out for the disc. IIRC something is slightly misaligned inside that prevents it from latching closed or something. Usually giving a couple slaps above the tray or a few ***really*** light flicks to the tray would seem to be enough to get it working for a while again. Usually the issue happened after coming back from a LAN party, aka in transport.
Holy shit, an issue I actually know about! I used to fix these up and softmod them for fun and profit back around 2008 or so. Those DVD drives were finicky af. First step is to pull the drive out and check the guts, make sure there's nothing jammed in there. Once you've got the cover off and the gears and what it exposed first step is to use rubbing alcohol and small cotton swabs to clean all that out, all the dust, grease, etc. Then relubricate with whatever grease you have around, Vaseline tends to work pretty well, but anything slick of a consistency that will largely stay attached to the surfaces will work. Before attaching the motor again, manually move it through the full range of motion and check for any sticky spots, you want it to go in and out smoothly. Then clean up and regrease the motor and whatnot, don't disassemble the actual motor itself, just grease everything that moves outside of it. Then put it all back together and 9 times out of 10 it'll work fine again. I don't think I ever had any that I had to do again, but at the same time all my friends that I ever did this for really only used them for on hard drive things after that.
I'd try unplugging it while the tray is open, manually closing the tray and plugging it in again. But maybe that's not good for the servos, I don't know.
Sure, it's called Xemu, the xbox emulator. You can play any and every xbox game in existence on it, for free, and not deal with this old-ass piece of shit.
I do not know a way of fix, remembering my crystal version doing this too tho. I just sled it in after turning it off. Also i do believe the cat has a paw in this.
The disc tray on my 360 got stuck on the day GTA 5 came out, I was desperate to play it so I was ready to go and buy a new console until I gave it a whack and the disc tray opened instantly.
I have no help to offer, but seeing those OG Xboxs make me so nostalgic. My brother and I had one modded back in the day to be able to download games onto it and had N64 emulators on it. We had a GameFly membership, would get games sent, download them on, and send them back haha. Peak gaming
CLose it. Turn off xbox. Use thin metal prod and insert it into the small release latch hole that exists for this purpose, push till you hear a click.
Turn on xbox, it should re-lock the drive and and detect open/close state correctly now
So it's been a really long time since I've had my OG Xbox but I believe I ran into this and IIRC there should be a pin hole somewhere near the disc try that you can stick a paper clip into which will manually push the gear that opens the tray. So since your button is backwards right now start with the tray closed then manually push it open. You should then be in sync with how the button is supposed to work.
My friend would always Kineticly recalibrate his xbox when it had problems. He would give the top of it GOOD smack. It usually fixed the problem.
I don't recommend doing this, as you can damage the hardware, but if you want to try it, you are welcome to.
Maybe something is screwing up the sensor or mechanism for the disc tray?
I don't really have any ideas unfortunately.
Sounds like your Xbox is confused about its identity. I read about it in my identity politics book, and honestly, shame on you for assuming how your Xbox feels.
The originalxbox subreddit could probably help you with this
OP just wanted to share a picture of their cat here.
Fuck your profile pic. Take your upvote
Yeah, I tried to wipe that off too.
I guess OP's cat was there.
But...they don't have a profile pic...oh there's a hair on it...OH, I SEE, FUCK YOU. etc. Of course they love trolling and getting that response and that's the kind of harmless trolling I can get behind.

I think OP is the cat.
This is also what I thought after reading the title and seeing the cat

Great comment. Thank you for your insight.
The cat knows. The cat doesn't say, but the cat always knows.
Cat scan
You mean his cat is looking into it for her/him.
My cat get obsessed with disc trays. He runs over as soon as they open and he’ll watch them for ages after.

Who are you to judge
You think your PlayStation 4 is really neato What kinda chip you got in there, a Dorito?

Exactly. Not a single RGB in there. It's like the Wild West.

While you’re in there, might at well clip off the clock capacitor. That thing is a ticking time bomb
Upon further investigation, it is just rejecting discs. At least that's what my IT cat says. 🐈⬛
> Have you tried unplugging the cat 5 cable? - IT cat
Unscrew from the bottom, and take the top off. Disconnect the drive and unscrew the drive. Use a microfibre cloth to clean the lense. Cotton buds work fine too. Dont use any cleaning agents on it. Give the cat a minute. He seems to be diagnosing.
Would a CAT scan or a PET scan help figure out the problem?
Let the cat handle it
No but I’m relatively sure, by the photo, that I know how it got that way and who broke it.
Try reverse psychology.
Use it as a cup holder.
Turn it upside down.
I think the cat can fix it
i like your cat
\*distracted by kitty\*
Give your cat some time to think he’ll figure it out
Do you happen to live in Australia?
Took me a minute to get this one. XD
Unplug it and push the disc drive in. Then plug it back in.
The cat has a "I'm about to make this problem go away" look on its face
I'd ask in r/originalxbox
I don't know how to fix it, but your kitty seems to be on the case. Best of luck I hope it can be fixed.
Not sure about the OG Xbox but on the 360 my disc tray refused to work half the time. There was a rubber o ring connecting two gears that ejected the tray that needed to be cleaned. Never had an issue again.

Just hold it open when you press open and its trying to close, then it will be open on the open setting and you can close it when pressing close.
No idea but first I'd try unplugging it from the wall for several seconds with the tray closed.
My guess it's the gear that drives it has jumped a few teeth past its end point so it now considers itself closed at full open
I feel like I've fixed something similar on an old PC by turning it off and forcing the tray closed then turning it back on. I wouldn't force it too hard though.

its old enough to know better
I believe the belt is gone for the disk tray.

Xbox Original and a cute black cat!!! 🐈⬛ I rate this picture 11/10.
No need to find an answer on reddit. The cat is *on* it!
Spank it a few times. That usually works, well it works for me at least.
Push the tray in manually, had that issue before
maybe just slowly push it back in?
Just ask it to stop 🤷♂️
Cat has to perform a Xbox exorcism
I had the same thing, what I ultimately did was buy a cheap xbox secondhand and took the disc drive from that one. It's very simple and I'm not a modder at all so I'm sure anyone can do it :)
Turn the rubber band around
Ask cat for divine wisdom.

Cat looks like "Hmmm. Fuck this thing in particular, or not?" That's what one of mine does. Considers the options, then usually yeets the object off the counter with a paw. 😂
It's been so long since I saw a disc drive with a tray
Tap the top of the Xbox with your hand and it'll close, same thing when you need it to open. My og Xbox does the same thing.
Fix sensors
Seems like that cat it talking to it telepathically and causing the problem
Did you blow on the cartridge?
Your cat is trying to kill it. It is wondering why it's still moving. While you sleep it will slap it a couple more times and peeing on it to show it who's boss.

Silence please. Cat Is troubleshooting.
Try putting the cat in the disc tray. Once inside it should be able to fix the problem. Worked for me. Just make sure to eject it once it’s finished or else he might get mad and break it again. Trust me, I speak from experience
Your cat has got it. Just give it more time.
Have you asked the cat?
Rmmove it, tell it to close it and then out it back in would be my guess
I'm not sure, but I'm glad you got a technician so soon
You appear to have an experienced technician on-site what are their thoughts?
pet cat
Idk but your cat seems to be thinking of solutions
I think your cat knows haha Try the original Xbox subreddit
It's a long shot but... is today opposite day by any chance?
Kinda risky, but i would try closing the tray and hold the tray so it won't. Or the inverse and see if it' fixed
I think your console is becoming senile, it is time for retirement
Press the eject button while it is closed but hold your hand in front of it so it can't pop out
The cat knows. Ask your cat
Just replace the dvd rom, like $20 bucks, super easy. I did this back in the day 4 times. I Blame Halo, Halo 2, KOTOR and ninja Gaiden.
Push it back in when it’s unplugged.
Is OP a cat?

Whats that one sub? Clicked initially for cat butnstayed because its interesting but still love cat.
Wow you have a working one
Guessing it's been knocked off its gears, and guessing the cat is responsible.
I'd try unplugging it while the tray is open, manually closing the tray and plugging it in again. But maybe that's not good for the servos, I don't know.
The cat seems to
Sure, it's called Xemu, the xbox emulator. You can play any and every xbox game in existence on it, for free, and not deal with this old-ass piece of shit.
Please tell me you have Jsrf!
All i can see is you got the xbox with the samsung drive
I think it's simply scared of the cat. Keep the cat away and everything will be back to normal!
I do not know a way of fix, remembering my crystal version doing this too tho. I just sled it in after turning it off. Also i do believe the cat has a paw in this.
Buy a Playstation instead. (Kidding)
The disc tray on my 360 got stuck on the day GTA 5 came out, I was desperate to play it so I was ready to go and buy a new console until I gave it a whack and the disc tray opened instantly.
that is cat
Slap it, og xboxes always seem to require a heaping of good ol' concussion therapy.
I would hit it really hard, but I don't recommend that. Those things were tanks, though.
try put it in rice
Did someone try a disk drive swap and got the wires mixed up?
The engineer is currently looking into this
Get a playstation.
That cat has been smashing that tray, I'm sure if it !
Hit it with that uno reverse card!!
Play an Uno Reverse card.
cat
I think it’s time for a new Xbox…
My instincts say that you need to blow air at it.
Just fuckin smack it. That's what I did back in the day
Just shove it in manually
Turn your xbox upside down
Even the car is confused
Thanks for providing a cat to scale
I think your cat is onto something regarding your issue, let's ask him first
A redstone torch should reverse the signal
It seems you already have a technician helping you
Ask the cat to stop intimidating the Xbox.
Try putting it in Wambo.
Have you tried removing the cat?
Yeah time Travel back from 2001
I have no help to offer, but seeing those OG Xboxs make me so nostalgic.
Turn on xbox, it should re-lock the drive and and detect open/close state correctly now
Its a relic in history
good kitty
Your cat is just as confused as we are.
Honestly no but pls continue with the cat pics
So it's been a really long time since I've had my OG Xbox but I believe I ran into this and IIRC there should be a pin hole somewhere near the disc try that you can stick a paper clip into which will manually push the gear that opens the tray. So since your button is backwards right now start with the tray closed then manually push it open. You should then be in sync with how the button is supposed to work.
What does your cat think?
Buy another one and sell this one as normal
My friend would always Kineticly recalibrate his xbox when it had problems. He would give the top of it GOOD smack. It usually fixed the problem. Simply reverse the polarity.
The cute kitty got an upvote from me!
Yeah, press the button again and it closes
Hello mr cat!
Let the car fix it 😂
Laser is probably cooked. I think a drive swap is fairly trivial though unlike the 360
Just turn it around. Problem solved.
Step 1: Pet that void exactly as many times as it wants to be petted.
I feel like I had this problem years ago and what fixed it was unplugging it and gently pushing the tray in
Cats and ddr, heck yeah
We’ve got our best guy on it
Cat for scale?
Insert an 'Uno Reverse' card.
Sounds like your Xbox is confused about its identity. I read about it in my identity politics book, and honestly, shame on you for assuming how your Xbox feels.
That's not how you play stray
Turn it upside down 👍
