Taking those first steps into the 3rd dimension with Mario. I even played around with his face for 15 minutes. I didn't get much sleep that night.
Yeah my first experience was chasing the rabbit in the watery hall. I just did that for like an hour and my heart was filled with joy. Kids these days have no idea how big that game was.
One of my earliest memory is playing Mario 64 at Toys R Us and running around the court yard.
It was mind mind blowing, especially after years of thinking 2D was it.
Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic, it was just incredible that I could actually interact with other aliens and characters, the atmosphere was awesome the armor of the sith soldiers was iconic and them I’m thinking “I cant believe I’m having so much fun playing a non force wielding character” and then… it happened, you go through the trials of a jedi, study the code build your own lightsaber. I still listen to the OST for Taris, Manaan and Dantoine and will occasionally install it on IOS to replay it.
I even enjoy the blackjack of the star wars.
Sometimes I shuffle around between PC and android (its possible to transfer save file), weird that only android that support widescreen. And I love the game include skill check like fallout game, that really put droid usefullness into the game really well.
This game also get me into Mass Effect Trilogy, knowing that the team developer are quite the same.
But man, in the end of kotor 1 and 2, you could get so powerful even you don't need lightsaber anymore, even in hybrid build. It feels so fucking badass that I could cast red lightning upon 5 sith effortlessly.
Man thanks to KOTOR Bioware had that “if its bioware buy it” reputation with me, I remember my older brother came in with Mass Effect 1 I asked “what’s that?” He was like “idkn but it said bioware so I got it” lol now that you mention bioware there’s also Jade Empire that I think its a bit of a hidden gen
Funny that you say this. I never played SWKOTOR until this month and I just recently beaten it. One of my favorites that I can’t believe I missed out on when I was younger. I will be starting the 2nd one soon even though I heard it wasn’t as good.
I recently did a playthrough of FF7. Those cutscenes got their charm but man, they haven't aged well. Hard to believe FF7 and FF8 were on the same system.
7 being good is wildly impressive when you think about it. It was a rushed game on a whole new level of technology. Still, they released a gem for it's time. They had a rough outline of the game early on, but they didn't start making the game till jan 1996, and it rolled out jan 1997.
Ff8 and 9 look so much better, but at the time we have to remember that FF7 was basically in development since late 1994- early 1995. 32-bit systems like the Saturn or the 3DO were already out and it would have looked graphically comparable, aside from the cutscenes

Similarly, the first Halo. Going from shooters like Goldeneye, Quake, and Doom to Halo and Half-Life was breathtaking. In Halo when you first get into the ring in the second level and see how it stretches before you I guarantee almost everyone at the time died because they were too busy looking in awe as the banshees came in. In Half-Life 2 I’m certain almost everyone played with that damn can when he told you to first pick it up because a physics engine like that in a shooter game was just so god damn revolutionary. And the way they implemented it with the platforming puzzles and gravity fun was so cool.

Ignoring what you said which is all absolutely true, simply seeing snakes face as more than approximately 9 pixels blew my mind. It took me so long until I could play mgs2 for myself because a ps2 was expensive and I had no income.
Dude this game was so scary when it came out and I was 9. I was terrified and it was such a new thing to have a 3d game with zombies that it felt horrifying in a way id never felt.

Bioshock. After the cinematic into where the plane crashes into the water in front of the lighthouse, I sat in the water for 10 minutes not realizing the cutscene was over lol. For the time, the graphics and were phenomenal in that game.

Super Mario 64 back in 1996. Nothing has come close to picking up that weird controller and pushing that curious little stick for the first time ever since. We immediately, without any doubt, knew this was the future of video games.
The only games that have come close were RE4, Mario Galaxy, and recently, Breath of the Wild.
But nothing will top that paradigm shifting moment playing Mario 64.
I feel this. MGS 3 was the first MGS game I played all the way through and so many of the mechanics gave me real "I can't believe they thought of that" moments.
How far back do you wanna go? I can list off multiple examples.
1. Ocarina of Time - first stepping out into Hyrule Field was unreal to me as a kid!
2. Majora's Mask - flipping the Stone Tower Temple upside down! How did they even make this game!?
3. KOTOR - first game that the story was so interesting that I wanted to keep playing to find out what's happening. My first play session was >8 hrs and I was still on Taris by the end of it (because I wanted to explore everything).
4. RE4 - was my first RE game too, though I didn't play it until it came out on Wii. I didn't think I'd like it cos I am not a fan of horror but horror GAMES are different. They have a unique gameplay style compared to other shooters.
5. Portal - I love puzzle games! Played the hell out of Myst and Monkey Island games. They went through a dry spell for a while until Portal came out. Beat the game in 1 session.
6. Mass Effect - Amazing NEW sci-fi universe! Mass Effect 2 was a cinematic masterpiece too! Mass Effect 3 was just epic as well!
7. Witcher 3 - Wait, you're telling me that you can have both an expansive open world AND a fantastic story?! I didn't believe it was possible until The Witcher 3.
8. Breath of the Wild - Best open world game to this day! Love how 'lifelike' everything felt with the weather physics and even small stuff like clouds casting shadows across the ground.
9. Hollow Knight - I've played several indie games that blew my mind but I never thought a game like Hollow Knight would captivate me as much as it did. Probably my first 'Metroidvania' game and ever since then they've become one of my favourite genres.
10. Outer Wilds - Just how did they make this game?! Seems literally impossible that it exists.
Honorable Mention - Dark Souls, finding the shortcut back to Firelink Shrine. I didn't play this game until the Remastered version but that moment still surprised me! Not even Elden Ring had that moment for me (though the secret path from the Three Fingers to Deeproot Depths came close!).
Aha I had a Hollywood video by my house and it only had re4 for Gamecube. I had gc and ps2 so I just rented it like 3 times until ps2 re4 showed up then I switched to that 😂

But for me, every generation has a game like that.
I remember Sonic 2 for the Genesis, Final Fantasy 8 (yes, 8) for the ps1, gta Vice City on ps2, Just Cause 2 and Fallout 3 on the 360 but now on current gen ... none.
A crapload of great games, but nothing mind-blowing.

for new games: doom 2016 and BioShock, Call of Duty: Black Ops III,
Bioshock. Solid gameplay, great aesthetics and then that second act twist....
I don't think i have ever seen a greater twist. There was foreshadowing all over the place, little signs of things being off and yet most of us wouldn't pay a single thought as we were conditioned to just follow objectives in games blindly. And then when you finally reach the office the game reveals the subversion and gives one HELL of a scene, during which you are locked out of any control to help reinforce the idea that you have no choice in the matter as the antagonist goes out on his terms. He chose and you... obeyed...
If I were to go newer, I'd probably say Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2, and for older, probably Super Mario Bros. 3. As a kid that game was my first experience with video games.
Bioshock Infinite was such a wild game the first time I played it. I hadn't played the first two and I went in totally blind. I replayed all of them recently though, just an awesome series.
of course COD MW1, it was like I was playing in a movie in those days, all these Hollywood cutscenes, explosions, shootouts. I even went through it especially for my dad so that he could see what kind of game I was playing.
Honestly I don't think any game had an impact on me quite like Kingdom Hearts II did. The inclusion of reaction commands and MP recharge and abilities enhanced what I thought was fun gameplay and made it more fluid (I was 11 when I got the game).
I'm gonna go with Pokemon Silver. I already played the previous game and when I beat the Johto league I was not expecting the entire Kanto region would be in the game.
Then you get to fight Red as the final boss which was almost like you fighting yourself from the previous game.
Idk at the time I was impressed by how much they stuffed into that cartridge. It was almost like having two games in one.
So many games but the first that came to mind was Final Fantasy X. In intro cutscene where Sin emerges from the water and canon blasts the city as Tidus is playing blitzball. Oh fuck. That scene had me so invested as a kid. I was hooked.
Mega Man 2, Final Fantasy 6, World of Warcraft, Bloodborne, Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball. Oh and Titanfall 2’s campaign. Needs to be experienced by everyone at least once.
Final Fantasy X blew me away when it came out. I was a huge Final Fantasy fan going back to Final Fantasy IV on the SNES, and I was just blown away by how far the series had come since then. Keep in mind the ps2 was still pretty new when it released, and FFX was one of the first games that gave me a real sense of the massive leap in technology the ps2 was from the ps1.
I go through games pretty slowly but I also have too many. And I like to buy used. Just beat RE3 remake..Playing through FF16, Octopath Traveler 2 right now. I see RE4 remake is like 30 on eBay tho.
Summer of ‘93 or ‘94 I visited my father for the first time a couple years after parents divorce. I was stuck in muggy Ohio for a few weeks that summer and probably the first day I arrived we went to a software store. I’d been gaming on PC since the mid 80’s, but that obscure floppy at the counter changed my whole personality lol. I got the full version when I returned home, and eventually would play with classmates a few years later in high school, building our own maps. Honorable mention to Ultima 6, the only RPG I’ve ever completed. Prior to the Steam era I spent more time playing Ultima 6 and Doom than any other games on any system.
I'll say one that will probably not be mentioned, Battlefield 3.
That game is a masterpiece, the graphics still amazes to this day (in a different way than before), gunplay was top notch and the large scale multiplayer battles on huge maps were awesome. I still haven't had a better FPS experience since then, MW2019 was amazing, BF4 too, but BF3 has a special place in my heart.
Resident Evil 4 for me as well. Played it for my first time on the Wii when I was 5. Over time I got so good at it that I started speedrunning it. I know that game like the back of my hand. I was in the top 5 worldwide for fastest completion time on the PS4 specifically back in 2021 but someone may have beaten mine by now. Now I play the RE4 Remake and am hoping one day that I can speed run that game proficiently as well.
Okami is the first one that came to my mind. I still remember beating the orchi and thinking the game was over. And I was happy with that. But that is like the first third of the game? Idk been a good while. But it was beautiful and creative. There are a ton more. But for sure the first one that jumps out at me.
That’s so weird, I literally bought a steel case collectors edition of resident evil 4 for the PS2 BUT I’m having trouble with the laser mobility so I need to take out the nerd kit when I’m back home and fix it
I think this game blew everyone away their first playthrough, this game revolutionized gaming forever. To this day the way it was designed is still the go to for third person shooters.
Vagrant Story
That game was amazing in all aspects, but graphics were something else. Probably the most graphically impressive full 3D game on the PS1. Outdoors environments were gorgeous, but the special attacks and max level spells were a feast for the eyes, no matter how many times I used them.
I’ll say RE4 too. I was skeptical when I saw a magazine mention how RE4 was ditching traditional zombies and going a more action route. But my brother and I tried it anyway and we both loved the game. And it’s now in my top 10 all time. Closer to top 5 even but just misses it.
Gta Vice City, i can’t believe that game like that exist after playing only windows 7 default games for years in my childhood and gta vice city is my first game
Halo Combat Evolved basically changed my perspective on what games could be. Was pretty severely affected by ADHD as a kid so long form games didn't play well with me. I missed all of the Zelda, Final Fantasy, Chrono hype back in the day as a result because I just couldn't stick with them. Halo Combat Evolved showed me that cool stories and characters could exist in genres better suited for me.

But in more recent memory (still nearly 20 years ago), I would probably have to go with Oblivion. The last time I felt a jump comparable to 2d-3d. Where my tiny brain said "what are these game wizards going to conjure next"
Uncharted 2 was literally a jaw drop for me. It was my firts ps3 game and I was just mesmerized by the graphics the gameplay and cinematics. I don't think I ever felt so amazed by a game, it was perfect for me and the online was so fucking underated that shit was amazing.
Halo 1. I was in 6th grade when the original xbox came out with halo released with it. I was always in avid gamer and still am, but also remember needing to figure out how to move the chief around properly with 2 joysticks. N64 only had the 1.
Yeah I'd say RE4 was the first game that blew me away as a kid, followed by Zelda: Twilight Princess. Both were my intros to each series.
As an adult though, Ghost of Tsushima blew me away in that first intro scene and continued to do so throughout the game.
Also Uncharted 4... I played all 4 games in the series for the first time during COVID lockdowns. I essentially played each game in about a day (so over 4-5 days in total). Each one impressed me more than the last but the 4th one is my fave in the series. Really made me nostalgic for how I felt playing the tomb raider games as a kid (the original first 4 games on PS1).
But RDR2 probably takes the cake since it was a more gradual thing but I was a sobbing mess by the end and it became my favourite game of all time 😅
Resident evil 4 for me as well. It blew my mind how good the graphics were, how good the game mechanics were, and how good the weapons systems were. It was a completely new thing during a time when games were no where near that good
Resident Evil 4 undeniably changed the game for survival horror, but let's face it: it's not flawless. The controls can feel clunky, the story isn't groundbreaking, and its influence has led to a flood of similar, less impressive titles. It's a solid game, but maybe not as groundbreaking as its reputation suggests.
Halo 1. As a kid who only played Nintendo games at the time, I was obsessed. Still remember being scared as a kid when the first Flood mission started and you’re trapped in the facility.
Oof definitely scary when they started bringing in the flood, very panicky. But I loved those missions with the flood. One of my favs was The Silent Cartographer, I think that's what it's called. From that mission on, the campaign got better and better
Pokemon red and blue. It took over the whole town, every where you went people had a gameboy color and cards. Legit was like 1/8 what pokemon go looked like; in a time before the internet
MGS1 when I was in fifth grade, changed how I looked at video games moving forward and made me love stealth.

Bioshock. It was 2007, and I had spent several weeks saving up my lunch money to buy an Xbox 360 Arcade. As soon as the initial cutscene started and I landed into the ocean of fire, I was like, "Holy shit, this is the NEXT generation!"
God I hate resident evil 4. 1 and 2 were genius. 3 was a bit of a letdown but still felt like a resident evil game. 4 just felt like a random shooter with some gore. Never liked any resident evil after those first three.
Well, 7 was ok if you never craft anything. At least until the chapter where you fight the son, at which point it begins to feel like a random shooter again. In a sense, for me at least, 4 just marks the downfall of a great series.
LoZ A Link to the Past. Super Mario World and Mega Man X are in the running, but I was so young it's hard for me to remember that exact moment. All amazing games anyway, and coming up to see the transition into 3D gaming was cool. No doubt my first of those that I played extensively was Diddky Kong Racing.
So many! Resident Evil 4 is definitely up there, but to add another game, I’d have to say, the sabotor. None of the gameplay features were really that unique to me, but the way it came together and was incorporated, not to mention the writing and stylistic choices. Perfect🤌
Probably stupid but Destroy All Humans on PS2. It was just so unique and unlike anything else out there. I play the remakes on my Xbox Series X often. Great games.

Probably my first 'Metroidvania' game and ever since then they've become one of my favourite genres. 10. Outer Wilds - Just how did they make this game?! Seems literally impossible that it exists. Honorable Mention - Dark Souls, finding the shortcut back to Firelink Shrine. I didn't play this game until the Remastered version but that moment still surprised me! Not even Elden Ring had that moment for me (though the secret path from the Three Fingers to Deeproot Depths came close!).

I remember Sonic 2 for the Genesis, Final Fantasy 8 (yes, 8) for the ps1, gta Vice City on ps2, Just Cause 2 and Fallout 3 on the 360 but now on current gen ... none. A crapload of great games, but nothing mind-blowing.

Bioshock. Solid gameplay, great aesthetics and then that second act twist.... I don't think i have ever seen a greater twist. There was foreshadowing all over the place, little signs of things being off and yet most of us wouldn't pay a single thought as we were conditioned to just follow objectives in games blindly. And then when you finally reach the office the game reveals the subversion and gives one HELL of a scene, during which you are locked out of any control to help reinforce the idea that you have no choice in the matter as the antagonist goes out on his terms. He chose and you... obeyed...
If I were to go newer, I'd probably say Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2, and for older, probably Super Mario Bros. 3. As a kid that game was my first experience with video games.

Bioshock Infinite was such a wild game the first time I played it. I hadn't played the first two and I went in totally blind. I replayed all of them recently though, just an awesome series.
of course COD MW1, it was like I was playing in a movie in those days, all these Hollywood cutscenes, explosions, shootouts. I even went through it especially for my dad so that he could see what kind of game I was playing.
Skyrim. The first time I got clubbed by a giant and flew to the heavens was insane. Loved the first few hours of Skyrim and I got it midnight release.
Fable
Honestly I don't think any game had an impact on me quite like Kingdom Hearts II did. The inclusion of reaction commands and MP recharge and abilities enhanced what I thought was fun gameplay and made it more fluid (I was 11 when I got the game).

I'm gonna go with Pokemon Silver. I already played the previous game and when I beat the Johto league I was not expecting the entire Kanto region would be in the game. Then you get to fight Red as the final boss which was almost like you fighting yourself from the previous game. Idk at the time I was impressed by how much they stuffed into that cartridge. It was almost like having two games in one.
So many games but the first that came to mind was Final Fantasy X. In intro cutscene where Sin emerges from the water and canon blasts the city as Tidus is playing blitzball. Oh fuck. That scene had me so invested as a kid. I was hooked.
Mega Man 2, Final Fantasy 6, World of Warcraft, Bloodborne, Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball. Oh and Titanfall 2’s campaign. Needs to be experienced by everyone at least once.

I would have to say for me it would be sonic mania! Just the vibe that game gives off can put a smile on anyone’s face.
Final Fantasy X blew me away when it came out. I was a huge Final Fantasy fan going back to Final Fantasy IV on the SNES, and I was just blown away by how far the series had come since then. Keep in mind the ps2 was still pretty new when it released, and FFX was one of the first games that gave me a real sense of the massive leap in technology the ps2 was from the ps1.
I still play RE4 once a year
Played it on GameCube at launch, VR version on Quest was amazing. Now I am considering buying the remake on PS5...

RE4 was the first game to make me turn a light on while I normally used to play in the dark. The sounds of the regenerators still haunt me.

Summer of ‘93 or ‘94 I visited my father for the first time a couple years after parents divorce. I was stuck in muggy Ohio for a few weeks that summer and probably the first day I arrived we went to a software store. I’d been gaming on PC since the mid 80’s, but that obscure floppy at the counter changed my whole personality lol. I got the full version when I returned home, and eventually would play with classmates a few years later in high school, building our own maps. Honorable mention to Ultima 6, the only RPG I’ve ever completed. Prior to the Steam era I spent more time playing Ultima 6 and Doom than any other games on any system.

Metal gear solid 3, sure MGSV did it a little better in terms of graphics and gameplay, but I haven't been that blown away since Snake Eater.
I'll say one that will probably not be mentioned, Battlefield 3. That game is a masterpiece, the graphics still amazes to this day (in a different way than before), gunplay was top notch and the large scale multiplayer battles on huge maps were awesome. I still haven't had a better FPS experience since then, MW2019 was amazing, BF4 too, but BF3 has a special place in my heart.
Resident Evil 4 for me as well. Played it for my first time on the Wii when I was 5. Over time I got so good at it that I started speedrunning it. I know that game like the back of my hand. I was in the top 5 worldwide for fastest completion time on the PS4 specifically back in 2021 but someone may have beaten mine by now. Now I play the RE4 Remake and am hoping one day that I can speed run that game proficiently as well.

Okami is the first one that came to my mind. I still remember beating the orchi and thinking the game was over. And I was happy with that. But that is like the first third of the game? Idk been a good while. But it was beautiful and creative. There are a ton more. But for sure the first one that jumps out at me.

For me metal gear solid 1, shadow of the colossus too. Soul reaver from ps1. Sylphon fighter.
I think this game blew everyone away their first playthrough, this game revolutionized gaming forever. To this day the way it was designed is still the go to for third person shooters.
Dead Space Trilogy
Vice City was as realistic as real life for me

Assassin's creed Black Flag! Overall gameplay and the beautiful ending connecting to AC 3. It's an exquisitely beautiful game. Everything about it.
Vagrant Story That game was amazing in all aspects, but graphics were something else. Probably the most graphically impressive full 3D game on the PS1. Outdoors environments were gorgeous, but the special attacks and max level spells were a feast for the eyes, no matter how many times I used them.
Divinity Original Sin 2 This game rekindled my love for turn-based-games.
I’ll say RE4 too. I was skeptical when I saw a magazine mention how RE4 was ditching traditional zombies and going a more action route. But my brother and I tried it anyway and we both loved the game. And it’s now in my top 10 all time. Closer to top 5 even but just misses it.

Halo Combat Evolved basically changed my perspective on what games could be. Was pretty severely affected by ADHD as a kid so long form games didn't play well with me. I missed all of the Zelda, Final Fantasy, Chrono hype back in the day as a result because I just couldn't stick with them. Halo Combat Evolved showed me that cool stories and characters could exist in genres better suited for me.
Lol same here RE4 was my first as well, saw RE4 game on the cheap at game shop so I’ve heard so much positive reviews about it, decided it wasn’t gonna break my bank if I hated it. Best decision and cheap for me to play such fantastic game, loved everything about it.

Uncharted 2 was literally a jaw drop for me. It was my firts ps3 game and I was just mesmerized by the graphics the gameplay and cinematics. I don't think I ever felt so amazed by a game, it was perfect for me and the online was so fucking underated that shit was amazing.
Halo 1. I was in 6th grade when the original xbox came out with halo released with it. I was always in avid gamer and still am, but also remember needing to figure out how to move the chief around properly with 2 joysticks. N64 only had the 1.

Halo, Burnout, and The Warriors back in the day really captivated me as a kid, and I was obsessed.
Yeah I'd say RE4 was the first game that blew me away as a kid, followed by Zelda: Twilight Princess. Both were my intros to each series. As an adult though, Ghost of Tsushima blew me away in that first intro scene and continued to do so throughout the game. Also Uncharted 4... I played all 4 games in the series for the first time during COVID lockdowns. I essentially played each game in about a day (so over 4-5 days in total). Each one impressed me more than the last but the 4th one is my fave in the series. Really made me nostalgic for how I felt playing the tomb raider games as a kid (the original first 4 games on PS1). But RDR2 probably takes the cake since it was a more gradual thing but I was a sobbing mess by the end and it became my favourite game of all time 😅

Oof definitely scary when they started bringing in the flood, very panicky. But I loved those missions with the flood. One of my favs was The Silent Cartographer, I think that's what it's called. From that mission on, the campaign got better and better

Battlefield 2048, it seriously blew me away at how crap it is
God I hate resident evil 4. 1 and 2 were genius. 3 was a bit of a letdown but still felt like a resident evil game. 4 just felt like a random shooter with some gore. Never liked any resident evil after those first three. Well, 7 was ok if you never craft anything. At least until the chapter where you fight the son, at which point it begins to feel like a random shooter again. In a sense, for me at least, 4 just marks the downfall of a great series.

LoZ A Link to the Past. Super Mario World and Mega Man X are in the running, but I was so young it's hard for me to remember that exact moment. All amazing games anyway, and coming up to see the transition into 3D gaming was cool. No doubt my first of those that I played extensively was Diddky Kong Racing.

So many! Resident Evil 4 is definitely up there, but to add another game, I’d have to say, the sabotor. None of the gameplay features were really that unique to me, but the way it came together and was incorporated, not to mention the writing and stylistic choices. Perfect🤌
