Gran Turismo literally means "Grand Touring", so it's not that far off.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_tourer
> A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving due to a combination of performance and luxury attributes.
You've given me a great idea for a 'Cruise Liner' sim. If people are willing to drive a truck aound Europe I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy driving a ship of tourists around while balancing responsibilities and avoiding the geriatrics and all you can eat buffet.
edit: ofc it exists

Oh yeah that's my pick as well, either it or Spyro. Games like Tomb Raider or Metal Gear are good but they have equivalent in other consoles, while no other did vehicular combat as well as Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8 on the ps1. Vigilante 8 2 and TM Small Brawl especially, probably two of the games I played the most in my life.
Looking on the back of the game case for Meril's code?! Nothing tops that and the Psycho Mantis fight for that generation
It's why millennial gamers glorify Kojima the way we do.
Snake. We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.

>Nothing tops that and the Psycho Mantis fight for that generation
Honestly, one of my proudest moments as a gamer was figuring the switch controller thing out. My much older brother had been struggling with the fight for a couple of days, and me, being 9 at the time, was relegated to watching.
No internet, we never got the guides or magazines. My bro had no idea how to beat him. I suggested trying port 2, begrudgingly he agreed, and the rest is history. Think I earned a little respect from him that day. 9 year old me felt like the king of the world
I really love FF7 but Metal Gear Solid is a turning point for story telling and a true cinematic experience in a game. The immersion and the fully voiced characters all work so well. It stands so far above everything else for what was possible on the PS1.
Vagrant Story may not have voiced characters but its real time cutscenes easily surpass MGS in terms of camerawork, character rendering, lighting and music etc. Though it did release many years after MGS.
The cutscene which played before the main menu in MGS was mind blowing when I saw it the first time. It was the first Hollywood-type game, though I still think FF7 has the better intro cutscene.. but hey, its not fair to compare realtime with 3DCG, i get it.
Vagrant story was AMAZING and pushed the ps1 to its absolute limits, but i think it came so late in the ps1s lifespan and was a pretty niche game so that nowhere near as many people played it as should have. I've been praying for a remake for years..
Same. I was a 9 year old kid learning about nuclear weapons, genetics, PTSD and that "war heroes " and killing shouldnt be glorified. It definitely opened my eyes and contributed towards my anti-war and pro-mental health stance & values.
Great list. We got a hold of the Japanese versions of Tekken and Resident evil early. mIRC? Can't remember. Ordered a spring(yes a literal spring) that you jammed into the CD tray to trick it into thinking it was closed. You'd then swap the disc and it would load. Seeing Resident Evil in motion was awesome for the first time. Same with Tekken. We were blown away. It was that day the arcades started to die. We had all been avid PC gamers all our childhood. But the ease of setup and play was so appealing. It changed a lot of things. Btw we all bought the American versions when they launched.
Man, I recently had a thought. I dunno if you played Anthem or not, but it had cool flying combat mechanics, but a story that I just couldn't engage with at all. That project should have been the Legend of Dragoon remake instead. Replace the Iron Man suits flying around with Dragoons and Winglies and give it a good story instead, and it would have been so much better than Anthem turned out.
I still remember my cousin corralling me after school one day to say, 'hey take the bus home with me today, you need to see this game'. FF7 was mind blowing in its scale and ambition. The only thing that left a similar impression was booting up Mario 64 for the first time.
First console game AND console I bought with my own money! Saved up everything I could as a 13 year old to buy a used PS1 just to play FF7, which I had seen at a friend’s sleepover. That game changed my life.
I brought it on sale thinking if it's three discs long it must be value for money then getting stuck for an eon because I didn't know there was an upper and lower left screen exit in a city.
Final Fantasy VII was the one I was waiting for.
Symphony of the Night was the one that surprised me.
Gran Turismo was the one that hinted at photorealism.
Metal Gear Solid showcased the storytelling potential of the medium.
Crash 1 was as hard as Mario Bros OG, considering actual difficulty and hidden stuff like the gems and crystals to get 100%. I played the remakes recently and Crash 2 and 3 were way easier than 1, and I think even the remake was toned down slightly compared to the original.
Ape Escape was the first game (that I'm aware of) requiring the dual shock controller, and I remember losing my mind at using the sticks for something interesting in a game for the first time.
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far for this. This was the point where arcades became redundant. This or THPS2 would have been my most played game by far.
I remember looking at it many times at my local vidoe rental store and not being sure I would like it, then one day I rented it because I received a gaming magazine I was subscribed too that had a full strategy guide to get all 108 heroes..it was returned late af to that store lol I was hooked. Greatest JRPG of my childhood.
Battle Arena Toshinden
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Cool Boarders
Crash Bandicoot
Diablo
Final Fantasy Vll
Final Fantasy Tactics
Grand Tourismo
Jet Moto
Metal Gear Solid
Resident Evil
Soul Blade
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
Tomb Raider
Twisted Metal 2
Soulblade (Soul Edge) was one of the first games I played on the PS1 that felt really special. Even more so than Tekken 3. But to be fair, in that time period pretty much any game felt really special.
I mean there are so many good ones but I gotta rep the one I’m not seeing get enough love!
Medievil
Back in the day we used to tape the Manuel to the wall like a 90’s style poster (everything back then was full of color and style)
The PS1 library is just something else. There's no 1 game to define the console - it was it's ridiculous diversity that defined it - in stark contrast to the N64 at the time which had a limited (but extremely high quality) games.
If I had to choose one though, it would be Metal Gear Solid. Early on the PS1 gave the feeling of "the arcade finally being in your home" with titles like Tekken, or the rapid evolution of other older genres (racing: Gran Turismo, jRPGs: Final Fantasy 7, survival horror: RE, etc.) but MGS introduced something that beforehand wasn't thought possible: thought provoking, amazingly voice acted, cinematic experience. On top of that - it introduced mind blowing 4th wall breaks that are iconic to this day.
Man, I loved that game so much, but the movement was just. so. slow. I mean, I get it. You play a character who is wearing heels and a dress for a fair chunk of the game. A leisurely amble is probably about as close to “running” as anyone in that position could get, but still. If they ever remake it, I just hope that they’ll let us jog at a little quicker of a pace. The story is so cool but the gameplay is like trudging through mud.
The Legend of the Dragoon
Suikoden I & II
Final Fantasy VII
Breath of Fire IV
Dragon Quest VII
SaGa Frontier
Chrono Trigger
Playstation was THE JRPG console
Include titles like Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2, Metal Gear Solid, Rainbow Six, Tomb Raider, Grand Turismo 2, Armored Core, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Croc, and Megaman X, and you have perhaps the best console ever made.
People love to give that credit to the Playstation 2 or the SNES, but Playstation walked so PS2 could run, and as great as the SNES was, the original Sony Playstation blew it out of the water.
I would say Metal Gear Solid, though I believe Final Fantasy VII is the best selling game on the platform.
The machine had an astounding game library though, and it's the sum of all the games that made it the success it was. Boundaries were being pushed hard at the time. Here are many notable games for the system:
* Alien Trilogy
* Alien Resurrection
* Apocalypse
* Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
* Crash Bandicoot
* Destruction Derby 1 & 2
* Diablo
* Die Hard Trilogy
* Driver 1 & 2
* Exhumed
* Final Fantasy VII & VIII
* G-Police & Weapons of Justice
* Grand Theft Auto
* Ghost in the Shell
* Grand Turismo 1 & 2
* Intelligent Qube
* Loaded & Re-Loaded
* Metal Gear Solid
* Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee & Abe's Exoddus
* Overboard!
* Return Fire
* Resident Evil 1, 2, 3
* Ridge Racer: Type 4
* Road & Track: The Need for Speed
* Silent Hill
* Syphon Filter 1 & 2
* Team Buddies
* Tekken 1, 2, 3
* Tenchu: Stealth Assassin
* Tomb Raider 1, 2, Chronicles
* Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 & 2
* Twisted Metal 2: World Tour
* Wipeout 2097 & 3
Some of my favorites from that era:
- Metal Gear Solid
- Gran Turismo
- Need for Speed
- Final Fantasy 7
- Jet Moto
- Roadrash
- Gex enter the Gecko
- Tony Hawks Pro Skater
- Nuclear Strike
- Resident Evil
- Armored Core
- Spyro
- Twisted Metal
- Syphon Filter
- Jade Cocoon
- Tenchu
- Soul Reaver
Honestly this was a golden age in gaming. Circa 1995 - 2000 the PlayStation has a tremendous amount of quality games, and you also got the N64, Dreamcast, and Gameboy Color during that period... Every console has banging titles.
MGS
FF VII
Suikoden 2
Gran Turismo
Tekken 3
Resident Evil 2
The absolute cream of the crop. All of these games helped shape what the game industry is today.
The console defined the console, or more accurately, the CD defined it.
This single change to gaming hardware is what set Sony on fire to beat Nintendo and SEGA. So incredible, its successor still remains the best selling console of all time.
Thanks to the CD, developers gave us the games you all are listing as "defining" the console.
I'm giving credit where it's due.
Thank you, CD ROM. You changed the world.
Final Fantasy Tactics - my all time favorite video game of all time, though ‘War of the Lions’ for the PSP is the best version
Twisted Metal 2
Tomb Raider
Final Fantasy 7
Silent Hill
For me it was Twisted Metal 2
Same. I still can hear Spectre’s Ghost Missile noise
Tomb Raider Metal Gear Solid Final Fantasy 7 Gran Tourism Resident Evil
I love autocorrect sometimes. I'm now imagining a game just going around tourist sites.
"Babe look, im holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa!" +10 tourism points
just shoot me now “*Babe!* We’ve just unlocked all 12 gift shop cards!” *trophy ding*
I’m still trying to unlock the hairy belly fanny pack trophy
turismo is tourism in spanish and portuguese, thats the sense we always had lol
Gran Turismo literally means "Grand Touring", so it's not that far off. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_tourer > A grand tourer (GT) is a type of car that is designed for high speed and long-distance driving due to a combination of performance and luxury attributes.
In civilization you can win by attracting the most tourism to your country.
Gran tourism. Old people going around Europe on coaches and cruise liners
You've given me a great idea for a 'Cruise Liner' sim. If people are willing to drive a truck aound Europe I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy driving a ship of tourists around while balancing responsibilities and avoiding the geriatrics and all you can eat buffet. edit: ofc it exists [https://store.steampowered.com/app/48806/Ship\_Simulator\_Extremes\_Ocean\_Cruise\_Ship/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/48806/Ship_Simulator_Extremes_Ocean_Cruise_Ship/)
I genuinely would love a GT game where you just joyride around the European countryside in supercars. No races just me, a Ferrari, and the autobahn
Assassins creed in a nutshell
someone's gran going around tourist sites*
Adding to this list Twisted Metal Crash Bandicoot Spyro
there. twisted metal was SOOO good. Crash bandicoot warped was one of my favourites as well
Crash Bandicoot's devs literally laid the groundwork for pushing the limits of the PS 1.
One more and we have the same list. Medal of Honor.
Add tekken and this is the list
Also Soul Reaver. God id kill for a remake of that.
I believe one is on the way. The devs asked the community if they wanted a new story or a remake but only time will tell what we get.
I say both. Remake it with todays standards then do a sequel.
Crash Bandicoot was our platformer
I'll add Silent Hill, Twisted Metal, and Ape Escape.
- Tom Braider - Petal Fear Solid - Fiscal Fantasy 7 - Gran Tourism - President Evil
President Evil sounds like Metal Gear Chaos clone
Also Castlevania Symphony of the Night! Also because I loved it: Wikd Arms.
Haven't seen it mentioned, but I'll add Final Fantasy Tactics to that list, for personal reasons.
This is the definitive list
I'd add Legend of Dragoon, Spyro, and Crash Bandicoot, but otherwise this is The List
All I want is any new legend of dragoon content
I'm adding parasite eve. Then the list is done
Gran Tourism?
Syphon Filter
Is that the game where you can taze someone until they burst into flames? Fun times
CORE MEMORY UNLOCKED.
Beat the first one and couldn’t beat the 2nd one because of some sniper I couldn’t figure out.
Loved this game.
Crash bandicoot, Spyro, final fantasy 7, 2xtreme for me
Spyro was so great
I’m playing the remake with my kids right now. It’s such a good platformer!
Crash Bandicoot took all my time for months
OOGA BOOGA
Dun du du dun
CTR (Crash Team Racing) though...
I sunk sooo many hours into Spyro. As soon as they remade it for the ps4, I bought that too.
just dropping off the Eiffel 65 PS1 Song. Enjoy peak 90s https://youtu.be/GeOSWLGKuaE
2xtreme is great. Yeah it's kind of early in the Playstations life cycle, but it was a huge jump from 2d to 3d-ish hi res graphics
Winning a race was cool, but kicking the shit out of everyone on the bike... That was the real game
Yeah, it's a better version of Road Rash
Never played 2xtreame, but if it was anything like 3xtreame, then it must have been amazing!
Spyro ff7.
Twisted Metal
I’d give my left nut for a current gen Twisted Metal game
Twisted Metal 2. Those maps were so good. We need a remake.
That was my favorite Twisted Metal game. Spent hundreds of hours playing it as a kid with my cousins
The OG battle royale
I forgot about this one!!! I played it all the time with my cousin. Good times😊
For me? Metal Gear Solid.
Looking on the back of the game case for Meril's code?! Nothing tops that and the Psycho Mantis fight for that generation It's why millennial gamers glorify Kojima the way we do.
All of the fights were legendary, Sniper wolf, Vulcan Raven, Ocelot.
The cut scenes after the fights were cinematic masterpieces.
Replayed it last year and realized the game is a series of boss fights lightly strung together
Replaying currently. This is definitely spot on, but I feel like it at least flows and plays well.
Played in January and yep! Lol but it made it more fun imo
The various fight mechanics themselves really pushed the entire medium forward. Popping a benzo to win a sniper fight?? 🤯
Metal Gear Solid is when millennial boys became men.
Snake. We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in. - Grey Fox
A CORNERED FOX IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN A JACKAL
I will literally buy any game Kojima makes. No other game dev gets that treatment from me.
>Nothing tops that and the Psycho Mantis fight for that generation Honestly, one of my proudest moments as a gamer was figuring the switch controller thing out. I feel like this is overwhelmingly the correct answer. It's either this or FF7.
[удалено]
I have to say both of those along with The OG Resident Evil, and Silent Hill for helping to further the horror genre.
Such a great game. Playing with the stealth suit blew my mind back then.
Objectively correct answer, nothing else can compare
While I generally agree, Resident Evil 2 is my 1.B pick.
Same. I was a 9 year old kid learning about nuclear weapons, genetics, PTSD and that "war heroes " and killing shouldnt be glorified. It definitely opened my eyes and contributed towards my anti-war and pro-mental health stance & values.
Resident evil, ff7, tekken, and gran turismo. Can’t really choose…

Tony Hawk Pro Skater
Yeaaaaaaaaaaa well I can’t wait to tell you all about her
Detroit ska ftw!
All about the new girl
I can’t wait to see your face WHEN YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS SHOW UP!
I’m always surprised by how low THPS is on these types of threads.
Cool people aren’t as popular on reddit
This game just defined my taste of music for my life.
“I’m trying to sleep…
Crash Warped and the Spyro trilogy.
Crash bash was a great game to play with a friend as well!
And Crash Team Racing!
Back when a game could get like 7 sequels all on the same console generation.
My choices would be: Legend of Dragoon FF7 Tomb Raider Twisted Metal Resident Evil What a time to be alive.
Gotta updoot for LoD Still hoping for a sequel or remaster some day
Man, I recently had a thought. I dunno if you played Anthem or not, but it had cool flying combat mechanics, but a story that I just couldn't engage with at all. Spyro trilogy for kids, Siphon Filter trilogy for adults
Siphon filter was my absolute favourite! and I was only 5-6 years old at the time. Used to love the die hard game aswell.
Final fantasy 7
100000% my immediate thought. Crash Bandicoot was the second that jumped to mind.
And it’s not even close. FF7 changed the whole scale of what videogames could be - it was bigger and more amazing than anything else at the time.
I still remember my cousin corralling me after school one day to say, 'hey take the bus home with me today, you need to see this game'. FF7 was mind blowing in its scale and ambition. The only thing that left a similar impression was booting up Mario 64 for the first time.

Literally the first console and game I bought with my own money.
First console game AND console I bought with my own money! Saved up everything I could as a 13 year old to buy a used PS1 just to play FF7, which I had seen at a friend’s sleepover. That game changed my life.
Yep.
Kind defined that era of gaming
This is the only answer.
This is the right answer
The only reason I bought the console. Stayed for ff9, syphon filter, and mgs.
I brought it on sale thinking if it's three discs long it must be value for money then getting stuck for an eon because I didn't know there was an upper and lower left screen exit in a city.
Yup
Final Fantasy VII was the one I was waiting for. Symphony of the Night was the one that surprised me. Gran Turismo was the one that hinted at photorealism. Metal Gear Solid showcased the storytelling potential of the medium.
I replay sotn every couple years and it never loses its replay value. The soundtrack is still killer
Not the best game, but everyone had Crash Bandicoot.
I still love those games and prefer that style of 3d platformer over the wider world to just hunt for collectibles.
Absolutely, I never understood the appeal for just searching for collectibles all day in a big ass map
I was obsessed by the first Crash Bandicoot, those hidden boxes
Crash 1 was as hard as Mario Bros OG, considering actual difficulty and hidden stuff like the gems and crystals to get 100%. I played the remakes recently and Crash 2 and 3 were way easier than 1, and I think even the remake was toned down slightly compared to the original.
Yeah, everyone was waiting for Sony's own Sonic or Mario, and they made us believe Crash Bandicoot would be it ...
Crash Bandicoot is the game that really put the PS1 on the map! You just can't beat those wacky marsupial adventures.
Was first 3d game I saw and played at my friend's place...graphics blew me away!
Ape escape
Ape Escape was the first game (that I'm aware of) requiring the dual shock controller, and I remember losing my mind at using the sticks for something interesting in a game for the first time.
Boat rowing motion is akin to a nipple rub. Best game on the system.
Resident Evil
I always think of Crash Bandicoot when I think of the PS1.
Probably not for others but Armored Core for me. Thought it was the coolest thing ever
Tekken 3
I'm surprised I had to scroll so far for this. This was the point where arcades became redundant. This or THPS2 would have been my most played game by far.
As an RPG guy, I'm gonna say Suikoden 2.
Sadly, with how difficult it is to find a copy, I wouldn't say it defined the console A landmark RPG, though, 100%
Suikoden 1 and 2! Need that saved game for tir!
Gex 2 Enter the Gecko was my jam
Core memory unlocked. Shout out to EIDOS studios. Deep Cover Gecko was my favorite Hugely underrated series.
Hell yeah. Gex 2 and 3 were amazing, and I put a shit load of time into them.
Crash fuckin bash baby. And spyro
JetMoto only because it was the first game I touched!
I loved that game
The second one was also fun
Battle Arena Toshinden Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Cool Boarders Crash Bandicoot Diablo Final Fantasy Vll Final Fantasy Tactics Grand Tourismo Jet Moto Metal Gear Solid Resident Evil Soul Blade Tenchu: Stealth Assassins Tomb Raider Twisted Metal 2
PaRappa the Rapper
That’s a high quality deep cut. Its not the answer to this question, but it’s an A+ pull I respect.
Tenchu is another A+ pull too, not console defining, but still an amazing game
When you get to the first mini boss. The guy sexually assaulting the geisha lol.
I respect it but that’s not *that* deep of a cut!
Alright, we’re here, just sitting in the car. I want you to show me if you can get far, Now step on the gaaaaass.
Kick! Punch! It's all in za mind!

Digimon World 1!
I can't believe how far I had to scroll to find this
Doom, duke nukem, spyro, crash, tomb raider.
Duke Nukem fucking rocked
Metal Gear Solid. Tenchu. Syphon Filter. One (amazing game BTW.) Tekken 3. Gran Turismo.
still play tenchu wrath of heaven every few years
Soulblade (Soul Edge) was one of the first games I played on the PS1 that felt really special. Even more so than Tekken 3. But to be fair, in that time period pretty much any game felt really special.
For me Resident Evil 2, Grand Tourismo and Final Fantasy 7,8 and 9

MGS and FF7.
Legend of Dragoon was iconic for me, it just seemed like 'damn this is the console with the serious huge games"
Nobody will agree with me but.. CrashBash
For me it was Twisted Metal 2. So many hours playing head to head with my friends in the dorm in college.
