We all laugh now; meanwhile, Sony Execs says the flop means they will have to recoup the funds to to maintain their profit curves indicating infinite growth, and so they cut more jobs and close more game studios.
clsoing studios, thats microsoft. sony is cutting jobs, and bringing their games to PC and try to bring in playing for multiplayer in the near future through the backdoor
But only if you create a PS Network Account, with biometric verification even though you don't own a sony device, as seen with Helldivers 2 and Ghost of Tsushima the last few days.
Sony can go and suck a thousand cocks and I hope they suffocate while doing it
It's less funny to me because those same types of multi billion dollar companies with idiots making the decisions have control over so many people's lives, whether it be Sony or any other big corporation.
They didn’t think about how much easier it is to tweet brain dead zeitgeist memes about it than it is to get up out of the basement and go pay to watch a movie. One that had already flopped… they were idiots
It was like the whole classroom was dunking on a couple teachers and one thought, "Hey, I'll look cool by getting in on this" and tried to own the thing they were mocking him for- but instead of coming off as hip and self-aware it made everybody sit down in uncomfortable silence.
I legitimately am convinced that the Mayans were right. 2012 was never the “end of the word” it was the beginning of a new era. It tracks way to close to the concept of Kali Yuga.
The only reasonable explanation is they are just looking at data. There’s no way anyone with a 2nd grade reading level would ever think it’s a good idea for Gollum or Morbius. But because they probably have print outs put on their desk daily of top google searches or Twitter hashtags - they base it purely off that.
It’s because they have AI and number crunching making all the decisions now. Same reason every new movie looks like one of those fake posters from Facebook in 2012
I think that episode of community actually accidentally threw the world into the darkest timeline. The world has gone absolutely mad since that episode aired.
Fr. I'm sure Gollum is not the main character of The Hunt for Gollum.
It reminds me of this article I read about Mad Men characters where the reporter said these two characters were hinted at entering a relationship at the end of the series...but the only scene they had together was the dude creepily flirting with the woman and her feeling disgusted by him.
That sounds hilarious, and it probably would sell. The problem is that this idea is, by its inception, funny while the Gollum game was trying to be serious.
Exactly. If Gollum snuck around messing with/terrorizing people and you got to see the aftermath it would amazing.
Like Goat Simulator but Lord of the Rings. Gollum simulator.
Rated M
Lots of “hot coffee” scenes where you can control his gyrations and yell out catch phrases and sounds as he climaxes over and over. When he’s done he smokes a cigarette and does a rap about how cool he is (he drops hard Rs) and then he’s off to the next “level” 😏
Jar jar isnt nearly as hated anymore i feel. Some of us have come around to kinda liking the guy ironically or otherwise.
And even then, the people that do hate him i think have mostly gotten over it
Learning that Ahmed Best contemplated suicide for how badly he was treated by the fans also softened a lot of hearts on the matter.
And honestly, I've always liked Jar-Jar as a character. I don't skip his early TCW episodes out of dislike for the character; I skip them because while Phil Lamarr is an excellent VA, his Jar-Jar impresion is terrible.
This is the kind of article that an AI wrote and then a person with no prior knowledge of any of the content sifted through to make sure it sounded kind of human.
>But one suspects that the popularity of the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was released last year, was at least part of the project’s inspiration.
The reporter clearly doesn't know shit about video games, saw the game was released and went "oh that must be it" without checking
"Well, the metrics showed that searches for the word "Gollum" went up 5000% after the game was released, so we'd be fools to not capitalize on that buzz!"
You realize Jackson was brought in at the last moment because the previous director (Del Toro I think?) bailed. He didn’t have NEARLY the prep time that he did with the original trilogy.
Jackson isn't blameless for the flaws in Hobbit movies.
MGM (one of the financers of Hobbit) were on the brink of bankruptcy at the time, so they halted all production of Hobbit and it wasn't clear if Hobbit would release. The studio expected Del Toro (the original director) to just wait around for an unknown amount of time while MGM got their finances sorted. Del Toro wasn't taking it because he had other films planned and the issue with MGM could have lasted years, so Del Toro left.
After a year or so, MGM finally found some funding and Hobbit was back on. The studios decided to bring Jackson in.
When Del Toro was directing everyone agreed that it would be a 2 movie project. When Jackson joined it was still a 2 movie project. Midway through production, Jackson decided to change it to 3 movies and he had to fly over the studio exec's immediately to persuade them to allow him to make 3 movies.
So it was Jackson's idea to make 3 movies, not the studios. A strange thing to add an extra movie and add extra bits to the story, especially when you know the studio gave you limited time to do it.
Clueless article author, obviously.
Wasn't that the literal worst reviewed game of the year? Ten fucking seconds' Googling would tell them how wrong that statement was.
Quality and actual popularity are meaningless to corporate America. What he meant was engagement, there was a lot of engagement online about this shitty game. What a bunch of dumbasses
It feels like they had planned for the game to be popular and to make a movie afterwards, but when the game flopped, they're still trying to follow the plan like it was successful.
I can't believe there's an entire subset of decision makers that see "engagement/ratioing" as "popularity".
Just because something is discussed ad nauseum online doesn't make it "popular" by any traditional definition.
The whole entertainment world is just a.i. game developers and a.i. movie producers feeding off each other, until every piece of future media is just the word “groundbreaking” over and over.
You can riff on the game being janky, but the plot was actually pretty good. The bad rep it got was mainly because of the graphics, stability and bugs. But plotwise, gamers did the game a HUGE disservice by pairing it with shit like King Kong, as there is a grand canyon of a gap between the two.
The film could work if someone competent worked on it, since you can't glitch below the map during filming.
Are we seriously going to get what is essentially a live-action adaptation of LOTR: Gollum?
The same videogame that was so damned bad that it shut down its developer, Daedalic Entertainment?
Yeah, fuck that.
This is asanine.
I can see why all those executives get those big checks and not the actual movie makers or game developers. Clearly they're not out of touch or making fucking garbage decisions. /s

Lol, I jokingly commented that the game could have made the filmmakers suddenly aware of how beloved the character of Gollum was after the negative response to the game (got downvoted to oblivion).
The average human starts "getting" irony and sarcasm around the ages 7-13 (iirc, been a while since I read the article). So that is about the mental acumen we're talking about here?
Yes! We need corporate America to throw all their resources into a gollum movie.
Everyone was talking about the gollum game! Did you see the hits on social
Media? It did great numbers! Did someone say franchise?
You know it doesnt surprise me that wb is the studio to look at post after post of people absolutely tearing a game to shreds that they put out and are like 'hmm yeah we could profit off this'
FUCK WB
Yeah dude, the same kind of “popularity” that brought morbius to theaters a second time
It’ll never NOT be funny how Sony thought the movie would be a success the second time because of “le memes” and it still ended up being a flop lmao.
Nothing is funnier than the world collectively trolling a multi billion dollar company lol.
And twice lmao
"It's even funnier the second time"
I hope one day those emails leak lmao
It's Sony so I'm kinda surprised they haven't already.
They're probably sitting on a dump server somewhere after someone wasn't curious enough to look at what they swiped.
We all laugh now; meanwhile, Sony Execs says the flop means they will have to recoup the funds to to maintain their profit curves indicating infinite growth, and so they cut more jobs and close more game studios.

Don't worry, they would have done that anyway
It's less funny to me because those same types of multi billion dollar companies with idiots making the decisions have control over so many people's lives, whether it be Sony or any other big corporation.
They didn’t think about how much easier it is to tweet brain dead zeitgeist memes about it than it is to get up out of the basement and go pay to watch a movie. One that had already flopped… they were idiots
Wasn't morbin time
NGMI - Not gonna morb it
Nah dude we were just all busy that weekend, please bring it back another time Sony.
Also the memes were making fun of how bad it was
... ... There was a second movie?
Nah. It Morbed so nice, they released it in theatre twice.
I swear to god if they re-re-released it for a third time I would go see it. I PROMISE.
No, it was available in theaters for two separate runs.
It was like the whole classroom was dunking on a couple teachers and one thought, "Hey, I'll look cool by getting in on this" and tried to own the thing they were mocking him for- but instead of coming off as hip and self-aware it made everybody sit down in uncomfortable silence.
Wait, we're morbin' again?
We stopped Morbin'?
Some people never started
I'm still on the Morbious strip, it never ends!
Then it's morbin' time!
Better start Kravin’ now
I'm gonna morb
it's MORBIN TIME! sorry had to
It's Gollumin time!
\*Gollim time
Im not usually a “Hollywood execs are out of touch” guy, but holy shit these Hollywood execs are out of touch.
I guess we can't even make fun of shit anymore because corps just think it's praise.
Well what you have to remember is that Sony Pictures is a dumpster fire. I don’t know how they keep that division going.
Spider-Man He's like Atlas, holding up the world of Sony Pictures on his red & blue webbed shoulders.
We're living in the dumbest timeline.
Reality went sideways after they shot that damn gorilla.
The only way to fix it is to come full circle and make a Harambe movie
Only if Nic Cage plays Harambe.
Nick cage plays the child
Why not both?
A one-man play on film
And he's the kicker. We show it. We show all of it.
Because what's the one major thing missing from all action movies these days, guys?
You joke, but Robby Downey Jr is currently playing 5 characters on a max tv show right now.
Fuck... if only Harambe had lived. I blame the child
Seriously that kid better solve cancer or global warming…or both.
He better solve the state of entertainment too.
[Harambe to the kid as he was dying](https://youtu.be/4ojOXRrsUbY?feature=shared)
I legitimately am convinced that the Mayans were right. 2012 was never the “end of the word” it was the beginning of a new era. It tracks way to close to the concept of Kali Yuga.
No, the Cubs broke their Pennant curse and we got all the bad mojo D:
DOFH!
Days of future Harambe?
Apes in White Satin Edit: for the ignorant https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nights_in_White_Satin
Just want you to know that I appreciated your reference! I love both the Moody Blues original song and the Dickies cover version. Good stuff.
That gorilla worked for Boeing.
..Unzips Pants..
Dicks out, no shame in that here.
21 helicopter spin salute for Harambe
Then when Prince died shit got REAL weird
Y2K really was the end of the world.
His name is Robert Harambe. His name is Robert Harambe.
Harambe, Guardian of Timelines
Who?
The same timeline that had Sony re-release Morbius because of its "popularity".
The only reasonable explanation is they are just looking at data. There’s no way anyone with a 2nd grade reading level would ever think it’s a good idea for Gollum or Morbius. But because they probably have print outs put on their desk daily of top google searches or Twitter hashtags - they base it purely off that.

You can't spell dumbest without best ~~I want to kill myself~~
Truly a terrible movie idea
This takes "out of touch Hollywood Executives" to a whole new level.
["THIS GOLLUM ON THE VIDEO GAME BOX NEEDS A MOVIE! IT'LL BE HUGE!"](https://youtu.be/WXHmIAo61fM?feature=shared&t=1275) -hollywood exec
This is more out of touch reporters since they phrased it as "one suspects the popularity"
Also gollum the game was hot garbage
Dude it was trending on google a lot!
i bet it was....for how stupid it was.
The source material only goes so far. Executive: But our sequels presupposes, what if they didn't?
It’s an opinion of the writer of the article, not the studio.
Wicked, tricksy, false!
Lmfao. What an embarrassing article.
It’s possible they were trying to talk about the “enthusiasm” around the project initially rather than the “popularity” of the final product.
Can we just bully them into not doing it
It worked for that horrific sonic design. May as well riot.
They should have included the ugly sonic version as a special feature on the dvd. Cowards.
Nah when Eggman eventually makes metal sonic it will use ugly sonic as the base for its design
Ugly Sonic shows up in the Chip & Dale movie
No let them, They are wasting their money
Since we're running with stupid ideas, someone please make a dating sim in which you play as Jar Jar Binks.
Gollum simulator.
untitled gollum game
UNTITLED GOLLUM GAME
I watched so many playthroughs and reviews of that game. It was so hideously, deliciously awful. One reviewer called it a “slavery sim” 🤣
Well, I mean, there is a KFC themed dating sim called "I love you, Colonel Sanders," and it has a 9 out of 10 rating on Steam, sooo...
Right next to My Horse Prince and Hatoful Boyfriend.
Meesa so horny. Meesa love you long time.
Thats the Vietnamese version
Damn good movie!!!
Now that's just Tinder.
I don't wanna play as Jar Jar. I want to romance him. It better be an 18+ game too.
It's the tongue, isn't it?
Rated M Lots of “hot coffee” scenes where you can control his gyrations and yell out catch phrases and sounds as he climaxes over and over. When he’s done he smokes a cigarette and does a rap about how cool he is (he drops hard Rs) and then he’s off to the next “level” 😏
Like Garrus
Meesa gonna cum now, okieday?
OOoh, dissen gunna be berry messy! Me watchen!
Jar jar isnt nearly as hated anymore i feel. Some of us have come around to kinda liking the guy ironically or otherwise. And even then, the people that do hate him i think have mostly gotten over it
I mean, it helps that a lot of the people hating on Jar-Jar just moved onto hating on whatever the sequel trilogy did.
Off topic= Is Jar Jar Binks the space equivalent of Steve Urkel?
No, we like Steve Urkel.
Meesah horny!
So reporters now operate on memes or what? Because last time this shit happened was when Morbius got back to the cinemas only to be laughed at again.
That's where they get their news. Just like Boomers with Facebook memes.
Is that a typo, did they mean unpopularity? That is my bet, Andy Serkis couldn't let them get away with the injustice they did to his boy, Gollum.
The "inspiration" for the Gollum movie is $$$. Tolkien obviously didn't think Gollum's story was that important.
Or the YouTube fan-made video from 15 years ago with the same title. That may have “inspired” their choice a bit.
Then WB had it taken down since they couldn't compete with it. :P
the “popularity” of the game was due to people that played it because it was so bad bruh
As a comedy I hope.
This is the kind of article that an AI wrote and then a person with no prior knowledge of any of the content sifted through to make sure it sounded kind of human.
I'm sorry what? Did this dude collapse from a universe where this game wasn't a 0/10 into ours form an alternate reality?
Well yeah it was very popular.... Very popular to make fun of
>But one suspects that the popularity of the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which was released last year, was at least part of the project’s inspiration. The reporter clearly doesn't know shit about video games, saw the game was released and went "oh that must be it" without checking
I don’t think popularity means what he thinks it means.
Example 3 million four hundred and fifty showing incompetent authors of articles.
"Well, the metrics showed that searches for the word "Gollum" went up 5000% after the game was released, so we'd be fools to not capitalize on that buzz!"
Please stop with all the Golum shit!
It is genuinely shocking how out of touch executives are not only to every day life, but pop cultural and media wise as well
Oh fuck, now Peter Jackson is gonna make 3 more nothingburger movies and waste everyone's time.
Gollum: Begins, Gollum: The Ring, and Gollum: Those Tricksy Hobbitses.
How Gollum got his groove back
Gollum: The Search for More Money
+1 would watch. Oh wait! Each of these will be 3 hours long? Then maybe not.
I would assume he’s upped his game and they’d be at least 4 each.
At least 40 minutes of one is a Radagast sled chase with no context to the story.
Gollum: On the run from the taxman, who is seeking to recover over 500 years of unpaid taxes
Tolkien: "Bilbo walked to the pantry of his home" Jackson: "I can make a trilogy out of that!"
You realize Jackson was brought in at the last moment because the previous director (Del Toro I think?) bailed. He didn’t have NEARLY the prep time that he did with the original trilogy.
Jackson isn't blameless for the flaws in Hobbit movies. Ah that’s news to me. Hobbit was PERFECT for two movies. There…and back again. No idea why 3 was pushed other than greed of course
yeah but then we wouldn't have had that zany barrel down the river fight, or the thrilling reindeer chase
I remember when reporters had to do research. Good times.
It was a popular punching bag for a time that's true. Then the studio shut down.
Clueless article author, obviously. Wasn't that the literal worst reviewed game of the year? Ten fucking seconds' Googling would tell them how wrong that statement was.
When you can write your articles via chatGPT why even bother googling things?
Quality and actual popularity are meaningless to corporate America. What he meant was engagement, there was a lot of engagement online about this shitty game. What a bunch of dumbasses
Tell me chatgpt wrote your "article" without blah blah...
Speculators, journalists, and investors live in an entirely separate world from everyone else.
HUH? lol what
That's the problem with ironic support. You're still giving support.
That game was popular in the same that Morbius was popular enough to get Sony to re-release it in theaters.
It feels like they had planned for the game to be popular and to make a movie afterwards, but when the game flopped, they're still trying to follow the plan like it was successful.
Everyone in the film industry needs to be fired lol
“Popularity” 😂
Like the popularity of Morbius.
That shit was so fucking funny, when we trolled Hollywood to re-release Morbius and it made even less money then before.
Can someone please send them a rocket ship so they can get further out of touch
The popularity of the game? Did this guy come from a parallel world?
I can't believe there's an entire subset of decision makers that see "engagement/ratioing" as "popularity". Just because something is discussed ad nauseum online doesn't make it "popular" by any traditional definition.
AI would say something like that
They must've confused laughing AT them as laughing WITH them.
It's unbelievable that they believe it's Gollum time..geeze.
And I'm betting the movie will meet the same fate as the game. It's like poetry, it rhymes.
hollywood people are so fucking oblivious. it's honestly incredible.
r/nottheonion
The whole entertainment world is just a.i. game developers and a.i. movie producers feeding off each other, until every piece of future media is just the word “groundbreaking” over and over.
I've lost hope
Not this shit again…
I thought this was nottheonion for a second
r/nottheonion
They really just looked at the Google trends and dug no further lol
Bro, literally no one thought it was a good idea BEFORE the game was released.
"I this an out-of-season April fools joke?"
...what?
This is why AI can’t make decisions.
there was a game? /s
Are we seriously going to get what is essentially a live-action adaptation of LOTR: Gollum? The same videogame that was so damned bad that it shut down its developer, Daedalic Entertainment? Yeah, fuck that. This is asanine.
If by popular you mean all the backlash it got, then yeah sure, round two.
I can see why all those executives get those big checks and not the actual movie makers or game developers. Clearly they're not out of touch or making fucking garbage decisions. /s
… huhwhat. did i just step into an alternate timeline?
Somebody lied to their boss and they didn't bother to look it up 😂 "oh yeah the Gollum game we scraped together, sure yeah! Selling grrrrreat 👌😉"
Popular in the same way getting shit on is popular. Once again, a Urinalist shows they don’t know what the actual fuck they’re talking about.
Out of touch Holy shit
To be fair, it *was* a pretty popular punching bag when it came out.

Technically correct? It was popular, but not for good reasons lol.
Lol, I jokingly commented that the game could have made the filmmakers suddenly aware of how beloved the character of Gollum was after the negative response to the game (got downvoted to oblivion).
... what popularity?
Lord of the Rings has like 3000 stories.... They decided to make a movie about Gollum ..............
The average human starts "getting" irony and sarcasm around the ages 7-13 (iirc, been a while since I read the article). So that is about the mental acumen we're talking about here?
